Santa spotted in Weipa

from page 1

This year’s Christmas lunch for patients, aged care residents and staff will be ham, chicken, roast pork and roast lamb with a choice of salads or seasonal vegetables. For dessert, there will be plum pudding and custard. At dinner, patients, residents and staff will have a lighter meal of ham, chicken, roast pork and roast lamb with salad. “Bonbons and lollies also will be supplied and all nursing shifts will be supplied with food platters and plum puddings and custard,’’ Ms Steele said. Ms Steele said being in hospital on Christmas Day was definitely not ideal but all staff wanted to make the day as special as possible for patients and aged care residents.

Wet season closes PDR to freight FINAL freight delivery by road transport came into Weipa last Friday. Claudia Ross from Tuxworth & Wood Carriers said the Peninsula Development Road was now too wet for trucks to negotiate. “We won’t be running our trucks during the wet season. “We heard of several trucks experiencing difficulties on the road last week, particularly around Archer River, so we will resume our road transport services in the dry season, Mrs Ross said. Tuxworth & Woods will continue to offer a weekly freight service through the Sea Swift barge. A spokesperson for Hawkins Transport said their road transport service to Weipa had also ceased for 2011 following increasing rain in the area.

EVERYBODY knows that Santa is going to be really busy this Saturday night, but this lucky “Santaâ€? managed to ďŹ t in a bit of rest and recreation time before the big night. “Santaâ€? was treated to a ďŹ shing trip last weekend, courtesy of some good friends in Nanum, and was even equipped with a ďŹ shing rod decorated with fairy lights for his night-time adventure.

Remuneration for WTA councillors increased IF you’ve been toying with the idea of becoming a councillor on the Weipa Town Authority an increase in remuneration may just persuade you to throw your hat in the ring. The Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal last week announced an increase in remuneration levels payable to councillors from January 1, 2012. Each year the independent tribunal sets the categories

and pay scales for all Queensland local governments (with the exception of Brisbane City Council) and this year completed a full quadrennial review of the categories of local governments, and the assignment of councils to categories, which legislation requires be undertaken at least every four years. WTA elected members adopted a remuneration policy in March, 2010 to accept the lowest paid local

government category (category 1), however under the new guidelines remuneration will increase by more than 50 per cent. As of January 1, 2012 remuneration for the position of chair will increase from $46,000 per annum to $72,003, the deputy chair wage will increase from $20,070 to $30,859, and remuneration for councillors will increase from $13,380 to $17,144.

MEMBERS of the Western Cape Rural Fire Service were called to attend a rollover on Monday morning approximately seven kilometres past the boom gates on the Weipa to Coen road. There were three people

in the vehicle at the time of the accident and two had freed themselves from the late-model Troop Carrier before helped arrive. Western Cape Rural Fire Service used the jaws of life to remove the roof of the car to

free the third occupant. It is believed that the car skidded on a wet patch of road, causing the driver to lose control. All three passengers of the vehicle were transferred by ambulance to the Weipa

Changes to wet season PDR permits FROM December 14, 2011, local residents of Cape York Peninsula will be able to apply for a wet season road-use permit from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. This permit, available exclusively to local residents, will allow the holder to continue using the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) throughout the wet season, even after it is

closed to through traffic, subject to certain conditions. The new permit system has been developed in consultation with local road users following a departmental commitment to improve the wet season traffic management strategy on the PDR. The system is designed to offer more flexibility to the people who are most familiar

with local conditions. Previously, when the PDR was closed to through traffic, local motorists needed separate permits for each trip they made. Under the new system, local residents may have access to a longerterm permit, which will allow multiple trips on the road throughout the closure period. As safety remains the department’s foremost

priority, every applicant will have to comply with strict safety conditions, including vehicle type and weight restrictions, before their application can be considered. The Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Queensland Police Service will also retain the authority to override access permits if the road is deemed unsafe to drive. A full list of conditions is available

on the permit application form. The permit is limited to the state-controlled PDR, and is not valid for travel on any roads under the jurisdiction of Cook Shire Council or other local governments. For more information about the new permit system, or to obtain a permit application form, contact David Hamilton, road operations manager in Cairns, on 4050 5406.

Weipa households light up the town THE judging of the Weipa Christmas lights competition took place last Thursday night and the winners have been announced. There were 10 festive households nominated in this year’s competition and judges praised the effort put in by so many people. “It’s such a pity more people didn’t take the time to nominate their home, or that of a neighbour, as we saw some really fantastic light displays in all suburbs of the town,” Weipa Town Authority Chair, Carrie Gay said. “I was very pleased to see so many people getting into the spirit of Christmas!” First prize ($100) was awarded to 1/6 Ayam Court, whose magnificent display included many animated light features, and was

accompanied by Christmas carols, much to the delight of the judges. 13 Pandanus Parade secured the second place prize of $50 with their colourful display, and 8

Nonda Close received the $30 third prize. The WTA judging panel would like to thank Crazy Pete for generously donating his time (and Rolls Royce)

to spirit the judges around town in style. Christmas lights competition winners can collect their prizes from the Weipa Town Authority office.

Out with the old... and in with the new AFTER creating baking delights for locals and visitors for almost 25 years, the Weipa Bakery oven has been replaced. Bakery owner and operator, Garry Hilton said he had been using the original oven for 16 years and it was time for an upgrade. “The new oven was manufactured in Brisbane by the same company who made the original oven, so I’m confident it will serve me well,” Mr Hilton said. The Rotel II has six separate baking compartments, which can be programmed individually, and used seperately, making it more efficient to operate. The new oven was transported to Weipa by truck last week, and after a few temporary adjustments to the rear wall of the bakery, was installed last Friday, and is now turning out all your favourite bakery treats.

End of an era: the original bakery oven was replaced last Friday after almost 25 years of service.

Weipa Bakery’s Dane Brooke was all smiles on Friday after the installation of the new state-of-the-art oven.

40 years of rubbish removed from Batavia FOR around 40 years, people from all around Australia and the world have visited Batavia as a remote fishing and camping locale. Many visitors make use of the old dump site dug into the edge of the bank nearby and for several years this has been filled to overflowing with waste, and new gullies and ditches of rubbish have cropped up in the surrounding area. The toxic chemicals leaking from rotting batteries, electrical appliances and human waste were feeding into the Wenlock River system. The situation was unacceptable to Traditional Owners of the area, who raised the matter with the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa environment section through the Mapoon Land & Sea Advisory Committee in 2008. In November this year, RTA Weipa provided a contract to Rob Roy Earthmoving, to work together with Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers to clean the site and restore it to a healthy camp area. Rangers cleaned the site prior

to the removal of rubbish by Rob Roy and his team. Among the thousands of aluminium cans and stubbies, washing machines, car engines, generators and many old fuel tins, seven pit toilets were retrieved from various places – all with a view. A total of 75 tons of rubbish, or three semi-trailer tipper loads, were removed from Batavia and Rob and his team returned the site to its natural state. Rangers will rehabilitate the site over the wet season, including supplementary planting and weed control. The Mapoon Land & Sea Advisory Committee and RTA will discuss future visitor management options for the site so that it is maintained in a clean and safe state. Please be advised it is illegal to dump rubbish on the RTA lease and on Mapoon DOGIT land. The Mapoon town dump is 7km from Mapoon and can be utilised by visitors to dispose of rubbish. – Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers

Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers with some of the rubbish which had accumulated at the Batavia site over the past 40 years.

Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers worked with RTA Weipa environment section and Rob Roy Earthmoving to clear the Batavia site.

MAPOON Aboriginal Shire councillor, Beryl Woodley who has family ties to Batavia, is thrilled with the recent clean-up. “This is a beautiful place, and holds many memories for those of us whose families grew up here. My mother certainly spent time here as a child. Ms Batavia said. “The Batavia people are thankful for the efforts of Rangers, RTA and Rob Roy in restoring the site to its natural state. “This is the way we would like to keep it and I would ask the people who visit to please respect our wishes, and the recent effort of removing 75 tons of rubbish accumulated over 40 years.

Empty fuel drums were just part of the 75 tons of rubbish to be removed from the Batavia site.

Carrie Gay, Weipa Town Authority Chair

MERRY Christmas everyone, and do I have some goodies for you! Well, probably not as many as you may like, but we have had some good news in the past few days. We have received a letter from Andrew Fraser, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade. Following our representation regarding Weipa resident’s payment of municipal rates not being exempt from GST, and the fact that we do not have access to Federal Assistance Grants, Mr Fraser has written to the Federal Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan, requesting exemption from the GST for Weipa. He also wrote on our behalf, to Simon Crean, Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, urging further consideration be given to the matter of Weipa being able to access Federal Assistance Grants. This is actually a huge step as for the last four years we have had our letters ignored, or given a negative response from both State and Federal leaders. We wait with anticipation for the replies! At Friday’s Weipa Town Authority monthly meeting it was recommended that Strategic Leisure be employed to design a master plan for the Eastern Sporting Oval. They will start this work in the New Year and all interested parties will be consulted. Bear in mind that the development work will take at least a year, so conditions in 2012 may well be quite Spartan. We have received funding for a part-time Sport and Rec Officer who will be recruited in March. He/she will be implementing the Sport and Rec Program developed earlier in the year. For those of you considering running for council next March, the financial rewards, as well as the job satisfaction, will be considerable. As of 2012 the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal has adopted a new pay scale. Weipa, which is on the bottom rung of the scale has risen by 52%. The chair will jump from $46,000 per annum to $72,000, deputy $30 859 and councillors $17 144. Brush up your vocal chords, get your singing voices out and come along to Carols by Candlelight at St Luke’s Church on Friday, December 23 and get into the spirit of Christmas. Cheers Carrie Gay

THE spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Napranum with the announcement this week of a free bus service from the community to Weipa. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC) Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amos Njaramba, said the decision was made to provide the bus service to enable community members to access Weipa stores to do their Christmas shopping. “It has become increasingly expensive to travel into Weipa by taxi, and community members have been wanting and waiting for this service to happen for a very long time,” Mr Njaramba said. “ We h a v e b e e n inundated with positive responses from the community.” The Napranum to Weipa return service, which will currently run until Friday, December

Lima Bousen, Edmund Miller, Kevin Dick and Eddie Hall give the thumbs-up to the bus service.

23, runs twice a day and includes dropping community members off at their home with their shopping. “NASC wish to make this a more permanent service and we are currently seeking funding to keep the service running for the community,” Mr Njaramba said.

Mr Njaramba said he would like to remind everyone to be respectful to all community members using this service and to respect the no-alcohol rule for the community. “If alcohol is found on the bus, this free service will cease immediately,” he said.

Agreement reached with Visiting Medical Officers RURAL and regional area patients would be the beneficiaries of an agreement reached this week between the State Government and Visiting Medical Officers (VMO). Agreement was reached following a meeting between Premier Anna Bligh, Health Minister Geoff Wilson and VMO representatives. The agreement included a 2.5% wage increase back-dated

to January 1, 2010, and made further provisions for VMOs working in regional areas. VMOs will receive a fuel allowance, weighted based on how many hours they work in the public system, as well as extra allowances for those working in regional centres. An increase to the private practice allowance provides extra incentives for specialists to become VMOs in the public system.

Queensland Visiting Medical Officer spokesman, Ross Cartmill, welcomed the agreement. “This agreement provides extra support for rural and regional doctors to deliver more services in the regions. “That’s a win for Queensland patients.” Both parties also committed to begin negotiations for the next agreement at least six months ahead of its expiry.

Success for marine recruits

Rio Tinto Marine recruits Gary Ketchel and Slim Apuita onboard RTM Wakmatha.

New program improves literacy in Pormpuraaw

TWO jobseekers from Thursday Island, Slim Apuita and Gary Ketchel, have just completed a six-day voyage from Weipa to Gladstone on the Rio Tinto Marine Vessel RTM Wakmatha. The pair participated in the voyage to assess their interest in commencing an Integrated Rating Deck Hand Traineeship with Rio Tinto Marine. During the voyage Slim and Gary were also assessed by the ship’s Captain and crew as to their potential suitability for a position. The voyage was a success, with both Slim and Gary receiving very positive feedback from the Captain, and both will now

complete Australian Maritime Safety Authority Medicals and, all going well, will travel to Tasmania in January to commence a 14-week training programme at the Australian Maritime College. Indigenous Pathways Solutions (IPS), a local indigenous company owned by Ronnie Bosuen, has facilitated the co-ordination of this recruitment phase for Rio Tinto Marine. IPS was assisted during this recruitment by ITEC Employment Thursday Island and Weipa sites. IPS would like to congratulate Slim and Gary on their success and wish them good luck with their exciting new career.

Pormpuraaw women participating in the Jobfind literacy and language program should complete their lessons by February 2012.

A NEW language and literacy program conducted by Jobfind Centres Australia is showing great results towards improving the literacy rates of people in the remote Indigenous community of Pormpuraaw. English is a second language for most of the Indigenous Australians who live Pormpuraaw and at present only around 20 per cent of Pormpuraaw residents are literate in English, and able to perform basic tasks that many of us take for granted such as reading road signs or telling the time. In mid-October of this year, Jobfind’s Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) operations in Pormpuraaw began a 36-part Reading, Writing and Spelling program among two groups of men and

one group of women in the remote community. Following a successful trial in2010, Jobfind chose to base their program on a phonics-based approach called “The Sound Way”. Funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), the nationally accredited Certificate II course is delivered to students via a series of instructional DVDs and workbooks, and takes advantage of the fact that 93 per cent of English words use the simple rules of phonics and English spelling. The attendance rate across all three groups has been greater than expected, proving that the program is effectively engaging its participants and ensuring

that they can see the value in completing it. All groups are responding well to the content and pace of the course, with the women due to complete all of the required lessons by early February 2012 and the men shortly after in mid-March. “Jobfind is serious about closing the gap and improving the lives of Australia’s Indigenous people - and a vital part of that process is improving literacy rates”, said Simon Rodgers, Jobfind’s general manager of CDEP Operations. “In addition to gaining vital life-skills and increasing their employability, the program is also helping its participants to gain greater levels of confidence and self-worth.”

Sea turtle project kicks major goals AS 2011 draws to a close it marks six years since The Cape York Sea Turtle Project commenced through Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF) and to date some major goals have been kicked. Since 2006 turtle hatching success has increased in key breeding areas from what were alarmingly low numbers prior to its commencement, and predatory species have been significantly reduced. “In a number of key breeding areas on the Western Coast of Cape York we have managed to reduce feral pig predation on sea turtle nest eggs by up to 70%, said CYSF Cape York Sea Turtle Project Manager Brett Leis. “Over the past three seasons alone, well over 30,000 feral pigs have been eradicated from fragile coastal ecosystems through aerial culling, “Sea turtle hatchlings are now returning to the oceans in much larger numbers which is so good to see. The feral pig culls are the largest of their kind in the world. Cape York is one of the last strongholds for sea turtles remaining in the world. Populations are in decline and facing extinction due to an array of human impacts. Prior to the commencement of the Cape York Sea Turtle Project, feral pigs were digging up and eating close to 100% of turtle nests laid on Cape York beaches. No eggs were hatching and no hatchlings were making it to the water. Cape York was one of the highest recovery priorities for sea turtles in Australia as a result of this. In 2001 Queensland P a r k s a n d Wi l d l i f e Service Chief Scientist, and one of the world s leading sea turtle biologists, Dr Colin Limpus was reported as saying “this has the potential to cause extinction of Queensland’s entire nesting population of endangered olive ridley

turtles and “ seriously deplete the world’s largest nesting stock of vulnerable flatback turtles. The Olive Ridley turtle is believed to be Australia s most endangered sea turtle. Its entire nesting range in Queensland is on western Cape York, within the high predation areas. The Cape York Sea Turtle Project has focussed on protecting this rare and little-studied turtle as the entire population is threatened by feral pigs. “Because Olive Ridley turtles dig such shallow nests, they are particularly vulnerable to feral pig predation, Mr Leis said. The rare Flatback Turtle is found only in the nation’s far northern waters and its stronghold is on Cape York. The Flatback Turtle only nests on Australian beaches and is the only sea turtle to have its breeding range confined to a single country. CYSF has been undertaking valuable on-ground conservation work in an effort to protect Flatback and Olive Ridley populations and provide important information to aid in the conservation of two of Australia’s rarest and least-studied species of sea turtle. “We are equally active in protecting the two other important nesting species, the Hawksbill and Green Turtle, and six years on it is great to sit back and see what has been achieved so far, but there is still so much work that still needs to be done, Mr Leis said. CEO of CYSF Trish Butler claims they couldn’t have achieved these significant results alone. “The practical on-ground results are testament to the dedication and hard work of not only the CYSF team and people like Brett Leis, but the Traditional Owners and people in community who have worked tirelessly to achieve the wind back required to save the sea turtles from extinction.

“Working together we have managed to kick some major goals, Mrs Butler said. Mrs Butler is quick to remind people that while the results are worth celebrating, there is much more work to be done to maintain a sustainable long-term outcome. “This is a short-term win, it is the longer term outcomes we need to work towards. “CYSF has been at the forefront of capacity building and mentoring the indigenous peoples of Cape York to protect the endangered sea turtle populations and save them from extinction since 2006. “Ongoing education across the entire community is extremely important to spread the message of the urgent need for feral pig management and the permanent control programs which need to be put in place to save the sea turtles for good. “Our aim is to ensure that protecting the sea turtle becomes not only a key program for the Cape, but a way of life for those that live on country.

“Our ongoing efforts will be strongly focussed on the education component of the program, moving forward and empowering the indigenous people and rangers to sustain what we are achieving, she said. The large scale feral animal control program coordinated by Cape York Sustainable Futures is also aimed at protecting other threatened species and habitats. Control programs target key wetland and coastal habitats, reducing the impacts of feral pigs on endangered biodiversity in the region. The project works in partnership with up to seven Indigenous communities. “The current Cape York Turtle Project we manage is made up of three main components: research, conservation and education. “We run the program on a very small budget and so to be achieving such significant outcomes is amazing and I would like to publicly thank everyone for their ongoing support of the program in the community, said Mrs Butler.

TRIBAL BIBLE By Rev. Michael Connolly We are still on Mark Ch 10 vs 17-27 and we read where the rich young ruler could not meet the demands the Lord placed on him for him to get eternal life. In verses 23-27 we read that the Lord then turned to his disciples and said these words, “How hard it will be for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God!” “The disciples were shocked at these words, but Jesus went on to say, “My children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.”

because riches brings independence from God and people. However, whether rich or poor, people enter God’s Kingdom only through God’s abundant grace, and not by any good works. Well, readers, I hope you’ve enjoyed Tribal Bible for the past year, and let’s continue the study into the Year 2012. “At this the disciple were completely amazed and asked one another, “Who, then, can be saved?” Jesus looked straight at them and answered, “This is impossible for human beings but not for God; everything is possible for God.” The disciples were shocked because it’s been ingrained into them in their Jewish culture that if you have lots of material possessions, it’s because you are doing the right thing in God’s eyes. The Lord was gently showing them that that thinking was wrong, and being rich does make it much harder to enter God’s Kingdom

Merry Christmas, and thank you WE would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Western Cape, and in particular Weipa, who have made us feel so at home in our first full year in the region. Operating the Western Cape Bulletin has at times been very demanding, but it has always been rewarding. Particular thanks go to everyone who contributes regularly to our paper, either with stories, photographs or sporting results. With only two of us at the helm in Weipa it would be impossible to provide such coverage without your assistance. Thank you also to the

people who stock the Bully for us each week and help to spread the news to the community. To the staff at the Weipa Airport, who make it a pleasure to pick up the papers each week, and always have a smile and a joke ready – thank you. Special thanks also to Rob Brown, our trusty proofreader, who somehow manages to remain calm on even the busiest of production days! And last but not least, thank you to all our readers...we hope you all have a safe and merry Christmas and we will see you again Western Cape Bulletin editor, Giembra Busmer, manager Stretch Noonan and Scoop the Newshound. in 2012.

Supporting new mums from Cape York SENATOR for Queensland, Jan McLucas this week visited Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan, an accommodation facility in Cairns that assists expectant Indigenous mothers and their babies. Reflecting on the first year in their new purpose-built facility at Edmonton, Senator McLucas met with the hard working staff of Mookai Rosie and presented the team with a framed Apology to the Australia’s Indigenous Peoples, signed by then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “For nearly three decades, Mookai Rosie has been supporting women from across the Cape, Senator McLucas said. “The staff work incredibly hard to ensure expectant and new mums receive the best possible care and that their children get the best possible start to life. “We’ve seen Mookai Rosie grow from strength to strength. It was only just over a year ago that they were operating in an old, converted Queenslander with a maximum of 12 beds and it was often the case they had to turn away a woman a day.

The team at Mookai Rosie with Queensland Senator, Jan McLucas.

“It is fantastic to see the staff, mothers and their babies in this wonderful 24-bed purpose built facility that offers an array of health services in a culturally appropriate way. Senator McLucas thanked the dedicated staff at Mookai Rosie for their ongoing work and commended their commitment to training and development, with many staff having successfully completed further study and gaining additional health qualifications.

Mookai Rosie provides accommodation, referrals, advice, education and support for Indigenous mothers. Many women travel from the communities throughout Cape York, Torres Strait and Gulf regions in Queensland to Cairns to have their babies. Operating from their new premises has allowed greater access to ante-natal care, post-natal care, medical and related services for mothers from these remote communities.

Mary and Pedro bid farewell to Weipa Two long-term Weipa residents, Mary and Pedro Coffey bid farewell to Weipa after 10 years in the town. The Western Cape Bulletin caught up with Mary before she departed... WHEN Mary Coffey received a phone call from her son-in-law, Vance Wallin, in 2001 offering her a job in Weipa she thought it would be a terrific opportunity to spend more time with her grandchildren and jumped at the chance. While Mary managed the singlepersons quarters for Vance Pedro plied the pie van he bought up from Cairns to Weipa. “Pedro used to say it was like having an oven strapped to his back with all the hot food in the van, Mary laughed. “It never seemed to matter how hot the weather was people always wanted hot food! Mary moved into administration for Carpentaria Contracting, a position she held until a week before her departure. “The business has grown so much since 2001, Mary said. “There were only two of us in the office back then so we worked some really long hours, but we still seemed to find the time to go camping and Pedro certainly managed to find plenty of time to go fishing. Despite working full-time Mary still managed to find time to become involved in fundraising and community activities, serving on several committees during her 10-year stay. “I was on the Dance Academy committee for a short time, and was even elected treasurer of the touch footy club in absentia, Mary recalled. “I’m the oldest squash player in Weipa (and proud of it) and have been the club’s secretary for the past five years. Mary and Pedro are headed to Golden Beach near Caloundra where they will enjoy their retirement with three daughters, nine grandchildren, Mary’s sister and

her 92 year-old father who all live in the area. “I am absolutely positive I will miss Weipa, Mary said. “I’ve had 10 years of lifestyle and that is hard to beat. Asked how she planned to spend her retirement Mary said she was going to learn how to make a cheesecake and take piano lessons. We wish them all the best in their retirement.

Mary and Pedro will be missed by the Weipa community.

Mary was farewelled by family and friends at the Carpentaria Golf Club last Saturday.

Pennefather inspection impresses acting CEO

Christmas arts and crafts at the Library

NEWLY appointed Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amos Njaramba, spent his first weekend in the role at Pennefather, inspecting the council assets and facilities... THE Pennefather area has an unspoiled beach approximately 50 kilometres long, from the Pennefather River to Duyfken Point. Pennefather is a popular destination for locals and tourists interested in camping and fishing. The beach is about two hours’ drive from Weipa town. Pennefather Beach is located on Western Cape York Peninsula and it is one of the most significant historical sites in Australia. It is believed to be the first place that the Indigenous people of Australia first sighted Europeans when the Dutch yacht Duyfken, commanded by Willem Janszoon, arrived in 1606. The south side Pennefather area is managed by the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council. Napranum Aboriginal shire Council (NASC) has a ranger’s program aimed at improved natural resource management. The Napranum Ranger program is a vital component of the conservation and

management of resources in the Pennefather area. Some of the activities carried out by the rangers include: fire management, dune protection, weed management, visitor management, pest/feral animal management and cultural heritage management. In addition, the NASC rangers also work on the ghost net program and turtle management. The rangers have been working very hard to renovate the turtle medical centre and the centre is now fully operational. Turtles have been identified as an endangered species and this program is going a long way to protecting the species. NASC has a successful Indigenous rangers program managed by a coordinator Ray Ulinovich. The indigenous rangers are Dennis Zamiak, Bronwyn Hall, Herbert Jerry, Samantha Kennedy and Ronald Clermont. Mr Njaramba said he was impressed by the tourism potential and

the cultural significance of the area. He was also impressed by the work that the NASC rangers have done. It was also noted that the facility has the basic infrastructure required to run the ranger program, however, the inspection revealed that the ranger base requires urgent repairs, additional equipment and the water system requires to be upgraded.

The way forward A Solar system funded by Centre of Appropriate Technology (CAT) is scheduled to be installed at the Pennefather Ranger Base early next year to provide clean energy to run the base. Mr Njaramba has commenced negotiations to facilitate funding of approximately $70,000 for the first phase of upgrades at Pennefather under the Working on Country (WOC) program. In addition NASC will seek further funding to complete phase two of the upgrade early next year.

There plenty of helpers at the impromptu arts and crafts session at Hibberd Library.

Clucky Christmas Cockies in the Western Cape NOW that the weather is heating up and Christmas is drawing near, some noisy, raucous visitors could be heading your way—and not just for Christmas lunch. You may very soon be hearing Sulphur-crested Cockatoos screeching around Western Cape as they look for a mate and start a family. Give them a Christmas present by being a Backyard Buddy to these clucky cockies. “Almost everyone will have seen a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. They are the familiar large white birds with a lemon yellow crest and an infamous blood-curdling call, said Steve Corbett, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “To attract a mate, a male Sulphur-crested Cockatoo struts Jagger-style toward the female with his crest held high and his tail feathers spread out wide. “He nods and bobs his head from side to side like he is dancing to his own tune, and chuckles. He is a real charmer. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos lay one to three eggs in tree hollows and both parents incubate them for 30 days. The chicks stay in the nest for a two months after hatching, and then remain with their parents and family group indefinitely. “That’s why if you see one cocky around, chances are there’s many more about too, said Mr Corbett. “You might see juvenile Sulphur-crested Cockatoos out and about now. “Sulphur-crested Cockatoos feed in big flocks on the ground. They love to munch seeds, roots, berries, leaf buds, nuts, fruits, grains, and insects. “They are a brainy bunch. While the flock feeds, a few cockies stay as lookouts in the

trees above. If any danger is spotted, the lookouts cry blue murder and the whole flock rises to safety in the air in a deafening cacophony. If you want to be a buddy to cockatoos, a great thing you can do is plant local native plants, grasses, shrubs and trees that they love in your garden. Two trees they particularly love are Yellow Box Gums and Macadamia Nut. Avoid feeding a cockatoo, as what starts as one cute visitor can quickly become a large group descending on your place. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos also are prone to stripping bark, small branches and leaves from trees while not feeding to keep their beaks trimmed and sharp, particularly when they are bored. So if you regularly feed cockies, you might come home one day to find a few waiting for you, and stripping timberwork, windowsills or decking while they wait. If cockies are already stripping the woodwork, you can deter them by attaching strips of aluminium foil, fabric or feathers from a feather duster that will flutter in the wind near where the birds are chewing. This will frighten them away, but be warned that it will also deter other birds too. “If you see a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo waiting patiently on a public drinking fountain, don’t be afraid to approach slowly and turn it on, Mr Corbett said. “Some smart Cockatoos have worked out this is a great place for a drink. And while they’re at it, you get to check out this gorgeous bird up close and personal, too!

Be a Buddy to Clucky Cockies ¡ Leave old gum trees with hollows for nest sites, as hollows can take up to one hundred years to develop. ¡ Leave hollow branches and logs on trees for them to nest in. ¡ Leave dead trees where they pose no danger to people, as nest sites. ¡ Provide a nest box for Sulphur-crested Cockatoos if possible. ¡ Resist the temptation to feed wild Cockatoos. ¡ Keep cats and dogs indoors as much as possible, especially at night. ¡ Avoid using chemicals and pesticides on your garden as Cockies can get sick if they eat contaminated seeds or insects. ¡ Retain existing stands of trees cockatoos are using and where possible extend the habitat by planting. ¡ Report any injured birds to a local wildlife rescue and care group. ¡ Never release a pet Cockatoo into the wild. Enjoy the true spirit of Christmas WEIPA Town Authority thanks all our residents for their support and patience in striving to make our town the best place it can be to live in. For those of you travelling away for the festive season, keep safe and for those who are staying in town, may you have a wonderful Christmas. Let us get caught up in the true spirit of Christmas. Keep Christmas a time of celebration and love. Don’t let Christmas become a chore, rather consider all the important things in your life. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Carrie Gay Chair, Weipa Town Authority

Christmas ~ what a wonderful time HOLIDAYS, rainy season, taking it easy, kids home from school, family, time out, recreation, no tourists interrupting our tranquillity, parties, presents, carols and, Jesus. “Jesus?” you ask, “What has Jesus got to do with it?” Well, his birth to start with. It’s what it is all about, isn’t it? Emmanuel, God with us, Child in a manger, Joy to the world, Love come down, Hope, Promise of a fresh start in life, Saviour, Redeemer, Forgiveness, Prince of Peace, Divine friend. Someone said recently that the story of Christmas reminded them that “at the centre of the universe there is not a frown, but a smile.” May you know His smile. May you know his quiet, but joyful, presence this Christmas. And may we, together with the wise men, (the first tourists from the east), shepherds and angels join in worshipping Him. May God God’s richest blessing be upon you and your families. Grace and peace, Reverand Ron Watson St Lukes Anglican and Uniting Church

Christmas messages The Divine Rescue THERE’S that wonderful Christmas Carol with the words, Hark the herald angels sing, A new King born today, And man will live for evermore, Because of Christmas Day. Have you ever thought about the words of the third and fourth lines, “and man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day?” What has Christmas Day got to do with people being able to live for ever? Well, Christmas Day is linked back to the Garden of Eden and the parents of all human beings, Adam and Eve.

It is also linked forward to the Cross at Calvary, and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why? Because Adam and Eve had sinned, and sin brought with it decay and death to all of God’s creation, including all human beings. Someone had to “fit the bill”, fit God’s requirement to pay for sin. God could have wiped out all creation and started again, but he loved the people that he had created, and in his great love he realised that only a Person who would be both fully God and fully human could do the work. Being fully God, the Lord Jesus

became that person. He set aside his crown, stepped off his throne, left the heavens and was born a human being through a woman, the Blessed Virgin Mary. That happened on Christmas Day and that’s the real reason for the season. It was the start of the Divine Rescue Operation of all peoples. Learn more about it by attending your local Christian church or congregation. Have a blessed Christmas and New Year. Rev Michael Connolly

A time to celebrate Come on ring those bells, light the Christmas tree. Jesus is the King, born for you and me. Come on ring those bells, everybody say “Jesus, we remember this your birthday.” The words of the Christmas song, written by Andrew Culverwell, give us the clue to what Christmas is. It is a time for giving, sharing, remembering, reconciling, communicating, forgiving and most of all for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Everyone from St Joseph’s Catholic parish wishes you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas. Successful year for Weipa Bowls Club THIS year started off with Weipa residents showing the rest of Australia what community spirit is all about, when Weipa Bowls Club held a fundraiser to assist families affected by the floods in the south. The generosity of all involved showed through with around $35,000 raised - not a bad effort for such a small community. Then it was into the bowling. The local competition in Weipa is always of a high standard, and this is made even more evident when our players compete against teams outside. All of our representative players did themselves, and our club, proud. We had players chosen to represent the region, and players who made it to finals to lose by the proverbial, but most of all we had players who represented our club in the finest fashion, gaining the club the respect it most definitely deserves. Congratulations to all of the bowlers of Weipa Bowls Club. We farewelled Don for a second time this year on a Social Sunday Bowls day. Don came to the club for a short stint with a job to do, and boy did he do that job well. It was sad to see him go, but a big welcome was made for Nick and Aggie. It is always lovely to have fresh input into the club. The Di McNamara and Joy Rollins Memorial Shields were again held this year, and as always were well supported by members. Di is a wonderful supporter of

Weipa Bowls Club and every year sponsors the Di McNamara Shield. Joy was a fantastic member of the Weipa community, and is still sadly missed. The Joy Rollins Memorial Shield, proudly sponsored by her loving husband Bill, ensures her legacy will live on in this great little town. Both competitions are regarded very highly on the Weipa bowling calendar, and all available bowlers ensure they compete, with a great turnout for both weekends this year. There was a sad, but very proud, moment during the year at the Weipa Bowls Club. Prior to the commencement of play in the Nev Brown Memorial Shield, Nev and Joyce Brown’s ashes were spread at the grounds, as was their wish. Family members made the journey to Weipa to participate in this momentous occasion, which was also proudly supported by many members of the Weipa Bowls Club. Both the Men’s and the Ladies Classics went off without a hitch again this year. All reports show that Weipa know how to hold an event like the Classic and make it a success. Competitors come from all over Australia, and before the weekend is over they are wanting to ensure they are included in the next year’s event. Not only do we have the talent in this town, we also have a fantastic attitude and the best greens (thanks Gordy). Oh, and we know how to party!

tory work done first, so it was on on to the Harriers Tree. Handbag finally arrived with the entrance apparatus so we could commence the dressing process. Weipa Cabinets kindly lent us a climbing tool so Seaman could access the upper branches. Every one added their bits and pieces to the lower branches, then Handbag led us in song as we sang a couple Aussie bush Christmas carols. Then the serious part,

Presentation night was held at the end of the season and although there wasn’t such a great turnout this year those who did attend thoroughly enjoyed the night. Congratulations to all bowlers who received a trophy, and to those who didn’t, see you on the green! As the year drew to a close we had to farewell two very highly respected members of Weipa Bowls Club. Helen retired from teaching, bought herself a campervan and started travelling around Australia. Jason decided it was time to return home, and took his family to Tamworth. Both Helen and Jason and family will be sadly missed, but we all wish them the best in their new endeavours. On a much brighter note, we welcomed new players to the club also. Sharon, Debbie, Adam and Susie joined the fray during the year, and have shown form that will keep all the seasoned bowlers on their toes. We look forward to doing battle on the green. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to everyone. We hope the festive season brings you lots of joy and 2012 is one of fantastic fortune. Remember, Weipa Bowls Club is having a function on New Year’s Eve with great food, flowing drinks and wonderful entertainment. Tickets can be purchased at the club. See you at the Weipa Bowls Club – where they grab life by the bowls.

runners off through Killara, meeting up with the slower ones near the cricket oval. Then to the Kindy before heading back to the hooch where Chicky Licky was waiting for us. Traditional port and ice cream followed by mince pies, fruit cake and Ducky Daddles finest brew, VB, were devoured. We welcomed Rainbow Fish to the pack while Mother Lung skolled a glass of champers.

Bowlers from around Australia gathered at the Weipa Bowls Club to compete in the highly successful 2011 Men’s and Women’s Classics (above and below).

Jason and his family left Weipa this year to return to Tamworth and will be sadly mised.

Thanks for the hospitality Ducky and Chicky. Straw will set the run from 8 Casuarina on the December 26. Handbag and I will be away for a bit now. We wish you all a very merry and blessed Christmas. May your 2012 be filled with happiness, good health and prosperity. On On Outhouse

A popular Weipa Bowls Club player, Helen is now travelling around Australia.

End of 2011 golf season THIS is the last Carpentaria Golf Club news for 2011 and I would like to thank all the golfers who participated in this year’s competitions. We did have a competition on Sunday, but it ended up a nine-hole competition due to the late afternoon storm. The winner was Dasha, from Vesa. I would like to wish everyone a very merry and safe Christmas, and I will see you all in the New Year. There are no competitions over the next two weekends, however, weather permitting, there will be a competition on the weekend of January 7 and 8. - Wendy Grainger

Bowhunters enjoy President’s Shoot CAPE York Bowhunters rounded out the 2011 season with a President’s shoot on Sunday morning. The event was well attended by 16 archers, including six junior archers, the youngest of which was Isaac GrifďŹ n at four years of age. Novelty events were the order of the day, ranging from pop-up targets, 3D targets out to 65 metres, and noughts and crosses. THIS is the last fishing report for 2011 and hasn’t this year been a beauty, with the best news yet of the Barra size coming in-line with the east coast at 58cm at the start of the season on January 30. I was hoping that the Queensland government would mirror the closure to coincide also, but for some reason they seem to think our moon is different from the east or south-east corner. Our closure doesn’t make sense to me, from noon on October 7 until noon on February 1, starting 2012-13. Sorry, but I can’t fathom their reasoning. Must have something to do with their new pay structure. On a lighter note, Maddie Ireland took a trip out to Duy-

fken, with her dad, and caught a quality Tusk fish - not bad for her first ever fish. And another first is Bronwyn with a Black Marlin. Bronwyn’s hubby asked what she wanted for her birthday and her reply was to go billfishing. Not a bad result with one of two caught for the day. Congratulations to both of you on your great captures and the pics you shared with us. I was down the first beach to the right after Lake McLeod, and spotted some really good Prawn activity to the left, southern end, around the mangroves. I had to look twice, as I thought they were Mullet, but no, on second glance there were some nice-sized Prawn getting

molested by some Queenies. It’s early days yet, but most reports are saying that there are plenty of juvies in the creeks so we might have a good season. Rain is the main factor for the Prawn spawn as they need the fresh to change shells as they grow. Some quality Grunter in full roe are starting to show up. Try and limit what you take to give them a chance to spawn. Mackerel are hard to find. The only report I had was from Kerr Reef where some goodsized bait schools are holding fish. Mackerel aren’t big lovers of fresh water, and tend to go deep in the wet, so Halco Crazy Deep 190mm lures are the go. A few more Fisheries rules

that are changing are bag limits on Queenfish are now five, Black Jew reduced from five to two but no maximum size, and Fingermark (Golden Snapper) have also been reduced from 10 to five. Make sure you mark these changes as Fisheries won’t take ignorance as a defence. Well, 2011 is just about finished and the holiday season is upon us. I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope all your Santa wishes come true. I will be back in 2012, enjoy the start of the new year. Cheers, but not to much... – Terri
