Yachties rescued by Rio Tinto ship By Giembra Busmer

A RIO Tinto Marine (RTM) ship answered a mayday call and diverted 80 kilometres to rescue two sailors and their dog early Thursday morning, January 19, after their yacht started taking on water in a section of the Great Barrier Reef off the Far North Queensland coast. Cairns pair, Peter Weston and Bruna

Safe in Weipa: Rio Tinto Marine (RTM) operations specialist Krysten Roberts and RTM Piiramu captain Bhupinder Singh with Peter Weston, Bruna McDowell and “Missy”, safe and dry in Weipa after their Coral Sea rescue on Thursday morning.

McDowell, along with their Scottish terrier, Missy were travelling from Thursday Island to Cairns when their 40ft yacht, Empress III, began taking on water. Despite their best efforts, the pair were unable to keep up with the amount of water entering the vessel through a broken exhaust, and issued a mayday call at 4am, Thursday morning. RTM crew rescues stricken yachties from page 1

The RTM Piiramu was en route from Weipa from Gladstone, and was only three nautical miles from where the stricken yacht was situated near the the Hannibal Islets, when the distress call was issued and was able to respond immediately. Captain Bhupinder Singh said that within two minutes of the call the crew onboard Rtm Piiramu were able to see the lights onboard the yacht and identify it on the ship’s radar. “It takes about 30 minutes for the engines to come down to manoeuvring rpm so by 5am we were at a dead stop in the water. “After communicating with the crew onboard Empress III we awaited their decision on whether or not they would abandon ship, Captain Singh said. “At 5.10am they made the decision to abandon and our crew swung into action. Captain Singh said conditions during the rescue were rainy and windy, with 10 knot squalls which hampered the operation slightly but it could have been a lot worse. “Normally in a situation like this conditions are really very bad, and although the seas were choppy and there was plenty of

rain the rescue went well. “Our crew had conducted rescue drills only recently but to actually put those skills into action in a real life emergency was a very different experience. “Everyone was worried at first but that soon turned to excitement once we had everyone safely onboard. Mr Weston said the decision to abandon the Empress III was not an easy one as the couple had been living onboard the yacht for the past five or six years. “All we managed to take with us was one backpack. Everything we had was on the boat and it was hard to leave it all behind, Mr Weston said. “Captain Singh told us there would be another ship along in about six hours, but if we had decided to wait and the yacht had sunk I would never have forgiven myself. “It’s a wonderful life on the ocean, but she is very unforgiving and you don’t always get a second chance. Ms McDowell and Mr Weston were full of praise for the RTM Piiramu crew’s professionalism and kindness. “The crew were marvellous. We were all soaking wet and I was pretty scared, but everyone was so kind, she said. “We

had left our shoes onboard the yacht but the crew met us with footwear and warm towels and blankets. Even though Missy is used to the ocean she was shivering from the cold rain and the crew wrapped her up in a warm blanket also. Captain Singh said he was very proud of his crew who had conducted the rescue in a safe manner. “We learned

a lot of things from this live exercise that you cannot learn from a simulated exercise and a I believe we are now more confident with our procedures. Ironically, Mr Weston and Ms McDowell were taking their yacht to Cairns from Thursday Island to arrange for insurance when the incdient occured. At time of printing the fate of the yacht is unknown.

Keeping kids in community CHILDREN from the Napranum and Mapoon communities under child protection orders now have a special place to call home following the official opening of the Napranum Safe House last Wednesday. Director of the Safe Kids Program with ACT for Kids, Kieran Smith said that although the safe house service had been provided since December 2009 it had been in temporary accommodation until last week’s opening of the newly constructed purpose-built building. “The program came about through partnership between ACT for Kids and the west coast Traditional Owners and provides children with the opportunity to stay within the community and stay connected with culture, country and family, he said. “It is the goal of safe houses to keep kids in community. History has told us that when kids are disconnected from their culture when they transition from care there is a sense of loss of identity, and we are hoping that through the establishment of this service kids can maintain that connection. Staffed by approximately 10 casual and full-time employees the new safe house can accommodate up to six children

at any one time and provides on-site accommodation for house parents. A family intervention service is also provided at the safe house which enables staff to work with families to build their capacity for reunification with their children. Following an introduction by Damien John the opening ceremony, which was attended by around 60 people, was conducted by Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien. Mr O’Brien said the safe house would provide a means for people to seek help and support from the community, and eventually rebuild their lives with their children. “When individuals are strong, then families are strong and then communities are strong, Mr O’Brien said. “What the State Government is trying to build with you, in partnership with your council and justice group, other service providers and the church, is to build a strong community here in Napranum and this safe house is a step forward in that direction. A commemorative opening plaque is to be mounted at the front door of the new building and the traditional naming of the residence will take place later this year.

Albatross Bay Bay Albatross RESORT, WEIPA QLD Ph: 4090 6666 The Evans Landing boat ramp and jetty at the height of last Sunday’s 3.11 metre king tide.

LAST Sunday’s 3.11 metre king tide proved to be a bonus for those fishing from the Evans Landing jetty, but was not as spectacular as the 2011 king tide, according to locals. According to one local resident when the king tide occurred in 2011 it coincided with an unusually heavy wet season and the high tide reached the concrete slab of the public toilets at the boat ramp parking area. However, with the Embley River only a metre below the jetty on Sunday there were plenty of anglers keen to try their luck, with the added bonus of not having too far to haul their catch in. There were also quite a few people photographing the season’s highest tide and those people are reminded to send their photos to www.witnesskingtides.org to help Green Cross Australia and Surf Life Saving Queensland create a mosaic of snapshots for future climate planning.

GBRMP impact denied A RIO Tinto spokesperson has denied the proposed South of Embley project will increase ship movements through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park as suggested by southern media. An article published on Tuesday said the federal government had been forced to reopen consideration of the project and could be putting new conditions on it to protect the reef. The article also stated that environment groups had called for Rio Tinto

to be prosecuted for failing to raise threats posed to the reef by additional ships carrying bauxite through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Rio Tinto spokesperson told the Western Cape Bulletin on Tuesday afternoon “Any extra ships will be bound for the export markets in Asia. “It is mischievous to be suggesting that there will be more ships travelling through the marine park as a result of the South of Embley project.”

Have your say on Cape York Entsch labels blanket listing treacherous World Heritage listing

would also allow a range of industries and activities to still occur as long as they are sustainably managed. “Having this type of international recognition can help increase economic opportunities such as tourism and sustainable land management. Ms Darling said the Queensland Government had been working with Traditional Owners, communities, stakeholders and the Australian Government to identify suitable areas of conservation significance for nomination. “This brochure provides a good introduction into this region and presents a range of opportunities for people to have their say about a potential World Heritage outcome, including attending face to face meetings, workshops or providing feedback online over the coming months. “It builds on an intensive program of community engagement, advice from

advisory committees and development of specialist reports across geology, vegetation, wildlife, indigenous cultural heritage, etho-ecology and nonindigenous cultural heritage and landscape areas. “Most importantly, the Queensland Government has also been taking a localised approach with Traditional Owners to help them plan for their country. “Over the next year, we will be stepping up our work with Traditional Owners, communities and the Australian Government to identify the natural and cultural values that could be included in a World Heritage nomination and determine how those values would be managed. LEICHHARDT MP Warren Entsch has slammed a push by the state Labor Government to introduce blanket World Heritage listing for Cape York, labelling it a green vote grab at the expense of Far North Queenslanders. Mr Entsch said the move is just the latest attempt by Labor to appease its Green masters in capital cities, following on from plans to lock up the Coral Sea at the expense of local industries. Mr Entsch was speaking in response to the release of a discussion paper seeking input on the potential for World Heritage listing for Cape York, released by State Environment Minister Vicky Darling on Sunday. “There is obviously an election in the air because this is all about shoring up green votes in the seat of Ashgrove and other key seats in south-east Queensland, Mr Entsch said. “We saw exactly the same thing just before the last state election when Labor pushed through the Wild Rivers legislation. “These types of extreme moves take away economic opportunity for people living in the Cape and you will find that 99 percent of the support for these types of moves will come out of capital cities down south. Mr Entsch said the blanket World Heritage listing of Cape York would negatively impact the entire Far North Queensland region. “People who enjoy fishing and camping will be restricted, economic opportunities across a range of industries will be stifled and the benefits and beauty of the Cape will only be enjoyed by a select few, he said. “There are already enough rules and regulations, checks and balances and protection in Cape York without the need to go this far. “It is just so wrong that the people of Cape York and Far North Queensland suffer in order to secure green votes in the south-east of the state. “We must fight tooth and nail to stop this happening. Mr Entsch encourages concerned constituents in Leichhardt to make submissions to the discussion paper by calling 4222 5239, emailing cypwh@ derm.qld.gov.au visiting the DERM website at www.derm.qld.gov.au/cape_york

QUEENSLANDERS have been invited to have their say on what areas of Cape York Peninsula should be granted World Heritage listing in any future nomination. Environment Minister Vicky Darling this week released a discussion paper which presents the first opportunity for broad community feedback across the state regarding the significant international recognition for Cape York. Ms Darling said any World Heritage nomination would only proceed with community support and with the consent of Traditional Owners and property owners for their lands to be included. “Cape York Peninsula is one of the most outstanding regions in the world, Ms Darling said. “The Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, Uluru, the Wet Tropics and Kakadu are all world famous places in Australia. “I firmly believe Cape York should join them but I want to know what the broader community think. Ms Darling said the discussion paper followed three years of targeted consultation in Cape York as well as an intense work program of research and investigation of the region’s natural and cultural values. “Only areas that have ‘outstanding universal value’ can be nominated for a World Heritage listing – I think we all agree that Cape York is an area of exceptional cultural and natural heritage. “A listing would mean areas were managed and protected for current and future generations – but

Recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution

Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Panel Co-Chair Mark Leibler (left), Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Co-Chair Patrick Dodson at the handing over of the Panel’s final report on January 19.

CONSTITUTIONAL Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Panel has recommended removing race from the Australian Constitution. The 22-member Panel presented a unanimous report recommending changes to the Constitution which recognise: • The continuing cultures, languages and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples; • Remove racist elements; and • Prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race, colour or ethnic or national origin. The changes remove race from the Constitution, but maintain the Parliament’s ability to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Government has promised to hold a referendum on the constitution changes before the next election scheduled for 2013. The panel presented their report to Prime Minister Julia Gillard on January 19. The Panel also found majority support for the removal of racist elements from the Constitution. “Many Australians were surprised and troubled to learn that the Constitution permits discrimination on the basis of race. “The consultations and submissions revealed a genuine desire to remove the racist elements from the Constitution to reflect modern Australian values and to protect all Australian citizens from discrimination on the basis of race,” the Panel said. Panel members believe that the report’s recommendations, supported at a referendum, would create a Constitution that more accurately reflects the nation by: • Acknowledging the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in our history and their continuing cultures, languages and heritage as Page 6 Western Cape Bulletin January 25, 2012

integral to Australia’s national identity; • Removing outdated sections that countenance discrimination on the grounds of race; and • Protecting all Australian citizens from discrimination on the basis of race, colour or ethnic or national origin. Co-Chair Mark Leibler said, in an opinion piece in The Age newspaper: “Some people might question why you would want to remove race from the constitution and then replace it with a power to legislate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “I would say we have to get away from this 19th-century idea that Aboriginal people are members of a ‘race’. “Their identity is based on ancestry, ethnicity and belief systems, not race. We need to have laws that relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people just as we do for many groups in society - women, the elderly, the disabled, veterans, people living in remote areas - but these laws should be based on need and the national interest, not race.

“Need because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people remain Australia’s most-disadvantaged citizens. “The national interest because their cultures and languages are unique to this country to be celebrated as part of our common heritage,” he said. The Panel has concluded that its recommendations for constitutional recognition are capable of succeeding at a referendum if supported by all sides of politics and if the pre-conditions for a successful referendum are put in place. “The overwhelming success of the 1967 referendum is a reminder that constitutional change in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can generate majority support. “The Panel calls on all political parties to continue their support for Indigenous constitutional recognition and to work towards a successful referendum including implementing an effective education campaign to raise public awareness of the issue and its importance for all Australians.”

Panel fact file... The Panel of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community leaders, legal experts and members of Parliament was appointed by the Prime Minister in late 2010 to advise the Government on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people could be recognised in the Constitution. The Panel’s work has crossparty support and includes representatives from the Government, Coalition, Greens and Independents. In preparing its report, Panel members held over 250 consultations in 84 metropolitan, regional and remote locations across Australia, and received more than 3500 submissions from

individuals and organisations. The Panel also drew on research and national surveys, meetings with community and Indigenous leaders and the advice of constitutional law experts. These consultations and submissions revealed strong support across the country for constitutional recognition. Many people were concerned that, while the contribution made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, art and cultures to Australia’s national identity was valued and celebrated, the nation’s founding document did not acknowledge the place of Indigenous people in Australian history or contemporary society.

Weipa rider bucks out Alf Wilson story and pic

DAREDEVIL Weipa bull rider Trevor Kris got the ride of his life when he jumped on the back of an angry and mean animal named Mundine at Saturday’s (January 21) Bucko Billy Rodeo at Charters Towers. The 27-year-old just failed to stay on the aggressive bull Mundine and was happy to be uninjured after his experience. “Mundine was one hell of a mean bull and even though I didn’t ride the time it was great to get the opportunity, he said. Some of the bulls at the annual rodeo weighed about 1000kg and getting on their back took plenty of courage. “He is named after the champion boxer Anthony Mundine and is a top buck jumper, Trevor said. Another competitor Roy “Boy Murray paid tribute to Trevor saying anybody who tried to tame Mundine needed courage. “It is one bull which just comes out bucking aggressively when the shutes open and Trevor did really well and is a good bull rider, Roy said. Trevor competed in the open bull ride section of the event which attracted a large crowd at the Charters Towers Showgrounds. “A lot of people were there and the atmosphere was great, said organizer John Moss. Moss also ran the ring action at a recent rodeo at Mungalla Station near Ingham and hopes to attract more riders from Cape Trevor Kris enjoyed a wild ride at the Bucko Billy Rodeo last Saturday. ADVERTORIAL

Kowari Motors bring new skills to Weipa KOWARI Motors’ core business is the manufacture of underground vehicles and remote area maintenance. In the year 2000 Kowari Motors Pty Ltd established itself in Weipa, to fulfill a contract let by the then Comalco Weipa mine. Kowari employed existing Weipa employees and bought some new people with new skills into the town, and continues today with this policy of bringing new skills to the Weipa workforce. It wasn’t long before the old Iraci workshop was too small and a new place had to be found. Kowari shifted to larger premises for a while and

then purchased the site where it is today and constructed a modern workshop, with a spare parts retail outlet department at the front of the building. Kowari has continued to bring up to date technology to Weipa, with modern computer scan tools, computer tracking services and parts, a modern laser wheel aligner and electronic wheel balancer, and the latest addition, a truck and tractor tyre-changing machine imported from the United States. Kowari has continued to commit to Weipa by building a $1.6m workshop and parts complex and the construction of housing for our staff.

New ownership and a new start DJARRAGUN College Wangetti campus will relaunch with renewed vigour to ensure all graduating students exit with an accreditation and a career placement. This is the bold ambition of visionary educators Don Anderson, Consulting Principal, and Indigenous leader Noel Pearson who last year announced intentions to acquire ownership of the school when it faced an uncertain future. Wangetti had reduced activity for six months while Cape York Institute and associated entities secured financial sustainability for the campus. Principal Don Anderson said he is determined to ensure all senior students at Wangetti and Gordonvale campuses achieve their Queensland Certificate of Education (Q.C.E.) and enter into university, full-time employment, and apprenticeship or further training. He said, “Being on the roll and serving time at school is not an option. Unfortunately that has been the case for too many Indigenous students. Wangetti will retain its secondary school focus specialising in vocational education and training with Nationally Accredited Certification courses in Construction, Automotive and Hospitality as well as Q.C.E studies. “ T h e Wa n g e t t i program will not stop at work-readiness, it is about very high quality training linking

Students at Wangetti work in well-designed classrooms and specialist workshops.

directly to employment, apprenticeships and traineeships, Mr. Anderson said. “Djarragun will track all students exiting year 12 to ensure this is the case, he said. Mr Anderson said non-Indigenous and Indigenous students who completed year 12 without attaining their desired accreditation are welcome to enrol at Djarragun to complete the courses needed to achieve their certification. Wangetti has been progressively upgraded over the last year with the inclusion of a Trade Training Centre that now features larger and upgraded construction and automotive workshop areas, and a fully equipped training room. Students (under guidance) now service school vehicles and are seen regularly stripping and re-building engines, as well as completing building and landscaping tasks around the campus. The hospitality area

has been extended to e n c o m p a s s a l a rg e state-of-the-art industrial training kitchen, with cool-rooms, toilet/ changing facilities, chef ’s office, and a training room. Wi t h t h e e s t a b lishment of our own coffee shop has created a real-life working environment on-site for students to learn and manage a realistic business. A 22 metre swimming pool has opened a range of water activities such as swimming competitions, kayaking, and life-saving classes. In response to feedback from parents, staff and students, the on-site hostel at Wangetti has been transformed into boys-only year 10-12 boarding. It had catered previously for boys and girls. “ T h e g i r l s d o n ’t miss out on all these terrific facilities as we have bus transport for day students, both boys and girls, Mr Anderson added.

The new year is a time for “fat loss AFTER our indulgence over xmas it is time to seriously address the “fat issue. I wrote about the HCG Fat loss program at the end of last year, and believe it or not some brave souls did start before Christmas and I congratulate those people on their weight loss and their commitment! Now for everyone else we all know excessive body fat is detrimental to our health and unless we live in Antarctica it serves no purpose. So why do we hang on to it? It stores toxins, chemicals, and excessive hormones which around the upper abdomen coats our heart, liver and pancreas in a thick layer of fat seriously inhibiting the healthy functioning of those organs. The HCG drops instruct your body to unlock your fat stores

and indeed they do to the tune of 4.5 to 7 kilos of “fat loss within a minimum 21 days resulting in a significant reduction in (amongst other places) the abdomen fat stores. I have seen consistent weight/fat loss and also seen it maintained well as the body “resets at its new body weight and I am very happy to see reductions in cholesterol, blood sugars and blood pressure. So if you are ready to “let go of your excess body fat then come along to a free information session Thursday February 2, 7pm at the Albatross Hotel and find out how you can kickstart the process of becoming a much leaner, healthier “you. Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

Drivers urged not to drive over flooded roadways Moving into the wet season Police are cautioning drivers to take their time and not rush when driving. Acting Chief Superintendant Andy Morrow, State Traffic Support Branch said motorist need to adapt their driving behaviour to suit the road and weather conditions. “In wet weather motor vehicles do not handle in the same way, braking distances increase and tyres can lose grip. Visibility is reduced due to rain and road spray and driving becomes more demanding on the drivers attention”. The rainy weather coincides with the return of the school year meaning that drivers need to be extra vigilant for children, many of them young children using the road network as cyclist and pedestrians. Acting Chief Superintendant Morrow also urged motorist not to drive through flooded roadways and to obey any temporary road closure signs that may be erected. “Temporary road closure signs will be erected as and when roads become flooded. But with the speed that which some roads become submerged, the absence of a sign does not mean it is safe to cross. If the road is flooded, don’t cross it. The risk is not worth it”, he said. Weipa locals are able to contact The Department of Transport and Main Roads on 131940 to obtain current traffic, travel and road closure information. School zones With the return of the school year

local Police are reminding motorists to be aware of the local school zones and speed limits. Remember the speed limit is 40km/h between 7:30am and 9:00am and again between 2:00pm and 4:00pm on school days. Please also be considerate of the lolly pop men and women who control the two pedestrian crossings in the school zone and aid in the safety of the school children crossing the road. Police will be out during these times enforcing both the speed limit and parking restrictions.

On a lighter note... Recently a certain Weipa police station admin officer was returning from a day out on the water. While walking across the Evans Landing car park she managed to take a spill and injure her ankle. When asked how she managed to fall over in the middle of the car park she mentioned something about not having her land legs back, however fellow staff members believe her love of red wine may of played a staring role!!!! So if you see Rosie around town don’t hesitate to ask her how she’s going. Until next week stay safe.

James and John, disciples of Jesus, and part of his inner core of confidantes, asked (demanded?) that they be placed on the Lord’s right and left when he comes into his Kingdom, still thinking that his Kingdom would be earthly and political. “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. Then the Lord went on and asked, “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptised in the way I must be baptised?” (Mark 10 v 36). To “drink the cup I drink” means “Can you go through the experience that I am about to go through, and “be baptised in the way I must be baptised” means being dunked under the

waters of hatred, anger, and jealousy for the gospel’s sake. When they answered that they could, the Lord confirmed that they will indeed have a similar experience but in God’s time, (James had his head cut off by King Herod in Acts Ch 12 v 2, for instance). And with regards to who gets positions in the Kingdom, it’s up to God the Father. It’s refreshing in a way that James and John were unashamedly ambitious and had no shame about elbowing their way into top positions in the coming Kingdom, even though their idea of the Kingdom was so wrong. This shows that the Lord did not have a band

of saints with him but ordinary men who he was to train for a short time. Then to put all his trust in them to ensure that the gospel continues on after he has gone back to heaven. He accepted people warts and all so there’s no reason why you can’t enter his Father’s kingdom also. The Lord Jesus said in Matthew Ch 7 vs 7-8, “ Ask and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks will receive, and anyone who seeks will find, and the door will be opened to those who knock.” The Lord gently calls. Rev Michael Connolly

NEWS / OPINION Scoop The Newshound Sniffing out the stories on our four-legged friends... HOW hot has it been lately? I’ve had to resort to sneaking through the cat door and catching a nap in the airconditioning whenever my humans aren’t looking! Seriously though, we animals can suffer from heat stress, which is potentially fatal. There are a few easy precautions you pet owners can take to ensure your pets don’t suffer from heat stress during the summer months. If your pets are outdoors (and don’t fit through the cat door like I do haha) you need to provide them with a shaded area to rest during the day. A constant supply of cool, fresh water is also a must. It’s probably a good idea to provide two water bowls on the off chance that one is knocked over. I’ve toyed with the idea of splashing around in my water bucket on really hot days ((my mum says it’s my Staffy breeding) so if your dog has the same urge maybe you could consider giving them a bigger bucket or even a kid’s paddling pool filled with water to cool off in...hint, hint, mum! Whatever you do, don’t leave your pet in a parked car on a hot day as temperatures can quickly soar. Did you know it can take as little as six minutes for living creatures to die in a car so perhaps think twice about even taking us to the shops, even if you only plan on being quick. I’d rather wait at home patiently than sit in the hot car! Don’t forget your pets still need to be exercised during summer but as it gets pretty hot here on Cape York during the day early in the morning or later in the evening is probably the best times for both you and your pets! And don’t forget to take a water bottle along... there’s no way I’m drinking out of a creek with those snapping lizards about! I believe you can buy special pet water bottles that come with a dish to drink out of, but you’ll probably find most of us K9s are quite happy to guzzle the water as it is poured from the bottle. The hot roads and paths can be a hazard too as they can burn the pads on our paws so best to walk us during the cooler hours. If you’re planning to take us to the beach when you go fishing make sure there is plenty of shade for all of us. Take plenty of water and if your pet has a light-coloured nose or lightcoloured fur on their ears use pet-friendly sunscreen as they are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer. Smaller animals like guinea pigs are particularly vulnerable to heat stress and you should make sure their hutches and cages are well ventilated and in the shade. And don’t forget our feathered friends...bird cages and aviaries should be placed out of direct sunlight and maybe supply a bird bath on really hot days.

Treat your pain at Weipa Myotherapy IS a bad back stopping you from pulling in the big fish, or a painful elbow ruining your golf swing? Then myotherapy could be just what you need. Local myotherapist, Anna Parker is again operating full-time in Weipa and is available to treat all types of musculoskeletal conditions. Anna studied at the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE where she received a Diploma in Remedial Massage, continuing on to gain an advanced Diploma

in Remedial Massage and Myotherapy before moving to Weipa and commencing practice in 2008. “I treat all types of musculoskeletal conditions ranging from sporting injuries, repetitive strain injuries and just plain discomfort,” Anna said. “Myotherapy is a clinical-based treatment, rather than a form of relaxation massage,” Anna explained. “I work through a sequence to discover which muscle is actually causing the

discomfort and can then concentrate on that restricted area.” Anna is hoping to see between 15 and 30 people per week but says she is not “selling sessions”. “It will depend on how a person is responding to the treatment as to how many times they will need to attend,” she said. Weipa Myotherapy is open from Monday to Friday on an appointment only basis and a referral is not necessary. For more information phone Anna on 0417 140 394.

What is Myotherapy? Myotherapy is the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions, which may cause muscular dysfunction and pain thus affecting movement and mobility. Myotherapists utilise a range of treatment techniques to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia). Trigger points within muscles are an example of muscle dysfunction that can cause deep aching pain, local tenderness, referred pain limiting strength and flexibility. Utilising palpation skills myotherapists can identify trigger points and deactivate them using various soft tissue manipulation techniques. Muscular dysfunction can be caused by trauma, overload or misuse of muscles arising from occupational, sporting or recreational activities.

What does a therapist do? A Myotherapy consultation will typically commence with thorough history taking followed by various muscle, joint and neurological testing. Combined with manual palpation of muscles and joints, a Myotherapist aims to identify the cause of one’s pain to ensure quick, effective and long lasting results.

What conditions can a myotherapist treat? Myotherapists treat the cause as well as the symptoms of a wide range of conditions. Some examples are: neck and backpain, headaches/ migraines, sciatica, chronic overuse (RSI), tennis/ golfers elbow, joint pain, numbness and tingling, general tightness, carpal tunnel, knee, hip and ankle pain, frozen shoulder and elbow and wrist pain.

When should I see a Myotherapist? Most people seek myotherapy treatment when suffering from aches and pains though many receive treatment to prevent injury. You should see a myotherapist when your pain lasts longer than a few days or when you’re suffering from restricted movement. Many people also seek myotherapy treatment in the rehabilitative phase of care to help strengthen the affected areas.

Local myotherapist, Anna Parker is available Monday to Friday for healing treatments. I’ve heard a few rumours about a one of my K9 pals being lunged at by a crocodile down at the Lakes. Does anybody know which one of my mates it was or if indeed the story is true? I love going down to the Lakes with my mum for a quick dip and a run around so I would really like to know the facts on this one! PAWS UP to the man who came and mowed the park next to our house in Alstonia Drive. The prickles are all gone and my mum and I can enjoy our morning stroll again. Thank you very much. Don’t forget to send in your “paws up” and “paws down” to me care of editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au and I will make sure to include them.

Lady killers spotted in Western Cape As summer warms up, Backyard Buddies is warning Western Cape residents to be on the look-out for exterminators wearing spotted outfits in their gardens. Nature’s pest controllers, ladybirds, are most active in warm weather and are now out in force to care for your prized plants. “Ditch the chemicals and pesticides if you’ve got aphids in your garden,” said MrSteve Corbett, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “These sprays could unwittingly be getting rid of your best bug controller yet – the ladybird.” “If given the chance ladybirds, also known as ladybugs and lady beetles, will happily eat up your aphids, scale insects and mites. An adult ladybird can consume 2,500 aphids during its lifetime. Ladybirds are thought to live for about two months, but some species can live for up to two years.” “There are many easy things Western Cape residents can do to attract ladybirds to their gardens.” • Avoid using even low toxicity environmentallyfriendly insecticides such as pyrethrum or garlic spray, as these will also kill ladybirds. • Plant nectar and pollen-bearing native plants as ladybirds also eat flower nectar and plant material including fungus. • Mix up a tasty brew of honey mixed with water and brewer’s yeast and spread it in the garden. • Put up with a few unwanted bugs in the garden if you want to see ladybirds as well. Ladybirds need a food source if they are going to visit, so be patient. • Water your plants early in the morning as this gives ladybirds a welcome drink and helps their feet to stick to leaves and stems. • Ladybirds prefer moist, warm conditions so mulch the garden to retain water. • Plants such as marigold, parsley, coriander, dill, fennel, alfalfa, zucchini, melons and cucumbers

attract ladybirds. After you’ve harvested the vegies, leave the plants in the ground even after the leaves become mouldy. Look on the underside of a mouldy leaf and you may find little black critters with many legs – these are ladybird babies! “Ladybirds start life as an egg, go through three larval stages, and turn into a pupa before finally becoming an adult,” said Mr Corbett. “During her lifetime, a lady ladybird will lay as many as 2,000 eggs.” “Ladybird larvae look very different to adults and can sometimes be confused with other bugs including scale. If you have some unknown bugs in the garden, its best to leave them be as they could grow up to be gorgeous ladybirds.” “You can also purchase your own ladybird buddies to help the population become established. Different ladybirds eat different bugs, so purchase the right lady killers for your garden from www. ecoorganicgarden.com.au or www.bugsforbugs.com. au. Release ladybirds after sunset or before sunrise as they are more likely to stay.” “Many cultures believe that ladybirds are lucky. Killing one is said to bring sadness and misfortune. The nursery rhyme ‘Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home’ encourages children to catch the beetles and blow them on their way in return for a wish. It is thought this was a way of getting the children to disperse the beetles amongst the crops to destroy pests and avoid famine.” “Enjoy ladybirds in your gardens this summer. They’re doing you a great favour,” said Mr Corbett. Share your photos of ladybirds and other native animals on www.facebook.com/backyardbuddies. Consult http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/ladybirds/ ladybirdsmap/default.htm to see whether Ladybirds are in your area.

Fun Facts about ladybirds • There are over 500 species of ladybirds in Australia. Identify what types of ladybirds are around you at the CSIRO’s Ladybirds of Australia’s website www.ento.csiro.au/biology/ladybirds/ladybirds.htm • Ladybird copulation typically lasts for 15-60 minutes but can extend for a few hours or even days. • Like human hair going grey, as ladybirds age their spots fade. • A ladybird in flight beats its wings up to 85 times per second. • Ladybirds breathe through openings on the sides of their bodies. • In 1999, NASA sent ladybirds and aphids up in the space shuttle to test their movements in zero gravity. • Ladybirds are very good at protecting themselves. Their bright colours and spots warn predators that they could be toxic to eat. They can also secrete a bitter smelling liquid to make any inquisitive predators go away. Mixed weather for Carpentaria golfers THE Carpentaria Golf Club hosted two competitions last weekend. On Saturday a two-person Irish stableford was held but with the rain pouring down only half the field

Mal Meninga - a truly great footy legend WITH only six weeks until kick-off I hope all the rugby league players and supporters are excited for the upcoming season, because I am! On the weekend I had the honour of attending a high performance coaching seminar on the Gold Coast . It was very intense, but also very enjoyable. We had some great rugby league experts share their knowledge with us and we were so lucky one of the lecturers was the one and only Queensland State of Origin coach and legend, Mal Meninga. Mal is one very inspirational man and after the seminar I was very fortunate to get sit down with him for a one on one chat and I asked him a few questions. SPILLA: Mal, how did you become Queensland State of Origin Coach? MAL: It all started in 2005 when Queensland was getting a little belting by the Blues in Brisbane, and I was in the FOGS box and all the former players were disappointed, and some were criticising the boys on their performance. So, sitting there in a world of hurt, watching my beloved Queensland mates doing it tough, I thought “I want to, and I will do something about this”, so I approached the QRL board to see if I could coach the team. SPILLA: Mal, do you have any goals for the future of the Queensland

team? MAL: Yes I do. I would really love to win 10 years in a row, but at the moment we are concertrating on winning this year’s series and causing more grief for NSW. SPILLA: What is some advice for any aspiring, good young coaches out there? MAL: Ask Wayne Bennett (laughs). You must have passion, a very good understanding of the game and always enjoy yourself . The biggest thing I have learnt is to get to know your players on and off the field. You are a life coach as well, and must always care and have respect. SPILLA: Mal, if you and Darren Lockyer had the chance to visit the Cape to promote Rugby league would you be interested in coming our beautiful country? MAL: Yes, I certainly would. It would all depend on our rugby league commitments, but it may be very possible in the future.

completed the 18 holes. The eventual winners were Ryan Aspinall and Kerry Scales with a total of 57 points, closely followed by Ben Lawton and Ollie Tata with 56 points. The NTPs went to Chris may Ryan Aspinall and Michael Newman. Sunday’s event was a single stroke and with the weather staying fine the full field completed the competition. The winner, with a 65 nett, was

TWO swashbuckling centuries, a tie, one win and a loss were highlights of the Weipa Crocs’ 2012 Goldfield Ashes cricket carnival campaign at Charters Towers from January 20 to 22. A total of 226 teams competed in six grades at the 64th Ashes, which is considered the biggest cricket carnival in the world. The Crocs competed in the 26 team-strong B1 division and finished a creditable 11th scoring 649 runs, taking 17 wickets, finishing on 15.89 points. Weipa started the carnival in winning form on day one on Bishop Oval at All Souls College when they beat Townsville Wanderers, the number three side. The blazing bat of opening batsman Bing Rockley led the charge as the Crocs bolted to 75 after six overs. Rockley scored 126 in whirlwind fashion he was treated like a hero by his teammates. “I used a really big bat and it felt good,’’ Rockley said. Chief motivator behind the first-up victory was long-time team member, Bluey Webster who gave inspirational speeches to the Crocs players. “We were all pretty happy with the way he batted,” Webster said.

Bing Rockley scored 126 for the Crocs on day one of the Ashes.

Rick Grunow fielding under the shade of a tree, later scored 153.

Rohan Skenner scored 25 for the Crocs in the top order and at one stage rain interrupted play. On day two the Crocs scored 127 and lost to Townsville Westpac. Rockley scored 34, Rick Grunow 32 and Gavin Rumble snared four wickets for the Crocs.

By far the Crocs most exciting game was on day three when they tied with Hornets Black at All Souls College, both sides scoring 281. Grunow scored 153, Skennar chipped in with 38 and Jeff Berry 31. The Bully snapped some pics at the game that day

and Grunow ensured he got plenty of rest for his batting effort by fielding under the shade of a giant tree near the sideline. “It is the best spot on the ground,” he said. Crocs’ spokesman Dave Howell said the players had a good time and were delighted with their form.

After assessing there were no major injuries, the walkers were allowed back to the hooch via the road, but he took the runners back into the scrub, losing his way as his glasses (minus wipers) fogged up, but eventually got them all back safely and we enjoyed a coldie in the drizzle. THE old wet season has been a bit of a fizzer so far, but it can only get better. Prawn is proving the best bait, with fresh local the best. The prawn are a bit patchy, here one day, gone the next.
