Cape York sea snake charms scientist A NEW species of sea snake discovered by scientists in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been given the scientific name Hydrophis donaldii in honour of Weipa fishing guru, Dave Donald. University of Queensland Associate Professor Bryan Fry said the discovery would not have been possible without the assistance of his long-time boat captain. “Quite simply we would not have found this snake without Dave’s unique knowledge of the area. I told him we wanted to survey as many distinct types of habitat as possible and he guided us to the perfect spots,” Dr Fry said. UU continued page 2

New sea snake species discovered UU from page 1
The finding of the new sea snake species, which is unique in having raised scales, is expected to provide important clues about evolution. It has been given the commonname “rough-scaled sea snake to reflect the unique scalation. “We don’t know why it has been evolutionarily selected to have such unique scalation, but we will next study its ecology to learn more about it, Dr Fry said. Hydrophis donaldii had evaded earlier discovery as it prefers estuarine habitats that are poorly surveyed and not targeted by commercial fisheries. The scientists collected nine specimens of this ‘viviparous or true’ sea snake from the coastal estuarine habitats of Weipa. “Weipa really is one of the last sea snake ‘Serengetis’. We can see over 200 sea snakes in a single night’s hunting, whereas sea snake populations have really crashed elsewhere through over-fishing removing
their prey and also the snakes drowning in trawling nets, he said. Dr Fry said the findings extend beyond simply discovering a rare animal. “All venomous animals are bio-resources and have provided sources of many lifesaving medications, such as treatments for high-blood pressure and diabetes. “This reinforces why we need to conserve all of nature as the next billion dollar wonder-drug may come from as unlikely a source as sea snake, he said. The Western Cape Bulletin spoke to Dave Donald following the publishing of Dr Fry’s findings and he said he was honoured to have the new species named after him. “Bryan and I have been working together for years and have appeared in many sea snake documentaries, including The Snake Wranglers series by National Geographic. “Over the years we have covered the entire year and found snakes every time, catching up to 200 per night on some nights

This edition of the Western Cape Bulletin features the inaugural “The Eye of the Cyclone column. o Cyclone SOMETIMES you just can’t win. There are elections in the air and Queensland’s leading men and women are putting their best feet forward, in the hope that you and I will find them so attractive that we will vote for their owners. What a collection of feet we have to select from. Mostly wearing the expensive and highly polished shoes that lawyers love, there are a few battered elastic sided boots that look as if they’ve tramped a paddock or two. So far, I have had no luck finding my own favourites to vote for (patent stilettos worn with black fishnet stockings), but I live in hope. So there you are, we will
in a couple of hours, Dave said. Dave developed special nets to capture the snakes using spotlights at night. “Sea snakes don’t come to the surface very much during the day because it makes them vulnerable to capture by sea eagles and osprey, he said. Dave said Dr Fry was accidently bitten by a deadly Horned Sea Snake at the boat ramp when they returned from one of their nights collecting snakes, and became the first person to be treated with the antivenom that he had only just developed. “Sea snake venom is extremely toxic and works by dissolving muscle fibre. Bryan exhibited a marked loss in muscle tone for over six months after the bite, Dave said. “I routinely carried a pouch for Bryan containing adrenalin and phenergan in case Bryan was bitten out in the boat, even after he received the bite, as an anaphilactic reaction was always a possibility, he said.
choose our parliament from a large pool of lawyers, with a few farmers thrown in. The most interesting farmers are the ones led by Bob Katter, the one with the big voice and even bigger hat. He is not standing himself, but he has assembled a tribe of people who also wear check shirts and large hats who aim to take Brisbane by storm. Can they do it? Probably not, but as our Bob never tires of pointing out, Pauline Hanson and her One Nation party managed to take eleven seats. Country Queenslanders have an instinctive distrust of city politicians, and straight talking Bob may do even better than Pauline.
Wouldn’t that make life interesting? Of course, the major parties will do everything they can to denigrate Bob, but they are having troubles of their own. Labor has just lost one candidate, a sparkling young chap of 19 who has on his resume working a factory production assistant, a cleaner and a pizza delivery driver. Labor will have to do without his rich experience of life because he gets absolutely rabid when it comes to gays (bad) or white nationalism (good). In fact, his politics are so strange that the party does not know whether to brand him Nazi or Stalinist. On the other side of the fence, the LNP has the mixed
blessing of Oberfuhrer Campbell Newman. True, he is a dynamic individual and no-one one is going to accuse him of Stalinism. Unfortunately, he has to work with a crowd of limp, colourless party members who resent being told to pull their socks up and be charismatic. I get the feeling that most of them would prefer another stretch as the Opposition, rather than winning the election under the Oberfuhrer. Right now we have two lame duck parties in Brisbane with a horde of enraged mini-Bobs sweeping down on them like Mongols attacking Beijing. I’m not taking bets on what the new parliament will look like, but I suspect it will be interesting...

NORTH Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) representatives visited Weipa recently to conduct public information sessions regarding the Port of Weipa land use plan process. Two open sessions were held at the Western Cape Centre on February 16 and 17 where the process and development of the new Land Use Plan was informally discussed with attending community members. NQBP’s acting CEO, Jeff Stewart Harris said the new land use plan will guide future development at the Port of Weipa, while being considerate of the existing environment and facilities. “The first stage in this process is the preparation of a statement of proposals, which identifies matters that will be considered in the new Port of Weipa land use plan. “It is important we receive community and stakeholder feedback in this early stage to ensure the new land use plan reflects stakeholder interests. “NQBP values input from interested community members and encourages any submissions relating to the Port of
Weipa land use plan, said Mr Stewart-Harris. Weipa Houseboats operator, Steve Rehn, attended the Weipa information sessions and said the discussions with NQBP’s CEO and commercial manager were very positive. “They gave us hope for developing and improving the Embley River facilities in the future, and it appears that establishing infrastructure to accommodate non-trailable and commercial vessels is far more feasible than were originally led to believe, Mr Rehn said. To ensure the Port of Weipa draft land use plan accurately reflects the needs of the region, NQBP is interested in any thoughts, comments, data or information that will facilitate better economic, social and environmental outcomes in future port planning. Acting CEO, Jeff Stewart Harris and newly-appointed Weipa commercial manager, Rob Watkins attended the sessions to meet with community members interested in the process. Gone, but not forgotten WEDNESDAY, February 29 marks 20 years since the tragic death of Toots Holzheimer, who was crushed against her truck in Weipa in 1992. Affectionately known as the ‘Queen of the Cape’, Toots delivered freight and supplies to the folk living on the stations in remote Cape York Peninsula for over 30 years, from the 1960s to 1990s. According to Toot’s daughter Donna Vawdrey, the lady trucker was a work place health and safety nightmare. “Her uniform was a skirt and boob tube, no shoes or PPE of any kind. Still, she was loved by all who knew her. While her chosen lifestyle was iconic for the Women’s Liberation movement Toots had no time for anyone who sat around all day whinging
about their lot in life. Toots agreed with the philosphy behind the movement, being equality for men and women, often stating that it was attitude that mattered, not gender. Her legacy was, ‘if you take on a man’s job just do it, without whinging’. SOLDIERS from Weipa, Kowanyama, Aurukun, P o r m p u r a a w, a n d Lockhart River recently concentrated at VillasBretonneux Depot, Weipa to attend annual Force Preparation Training (FPT). FPT is conducted early in the year to give the soldiers the opportunity to be re-acquainted with Army policy, equipment and to revise them on the Training, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) required to be Patrolman. The training week began with the soldiers completing their swim test at Weipa swimming pool, followed the next day by a battle fitness test (BFA) which consists of a series of push-ups, sit-ups
and a 2.4 kilometre run or five kilometre walk in a prescribed time. Fitness, the ability to endure harsh conditions and continue with the mission are key traits of every good patrolman. With the physical tests out of the way the soldiers attended a series of mandatory lectures on Army policy and undertook training in weapons handling, cross country driving, navigation, watercraft operations, radio communications and first aid, with the training week finishing with a live fire shoot by day and night. The training also saw the soldiers undergo assessment on their ability as a water craft patrol and navigation with the Reserve Force Reconnaissance
Vehicle (RFSV). PTE Brendon Wheeler and his crew were the winners of the water craft while SGT Seymour, PTE Webb and PTE Wheeler failed to get lost so won the RFSV navigation assessment. The training week provided the soldiers an opportunity to meet two new regular Army soldiers recently posted to B Company headquarters, Sergeant Marco Crescenzi from Perth and Corporal Philip Beaver from Sydney. The Officer Commanding B Company, Major Jamie Heron presented Corporal Matthew Ryan with the Defence Force Service medal in recognition of four years service and promoted Private Jacob Josiah from Kowanyama and Private

Anthony Pascoe from Lockhart River to Lance Corporal. Certificates for the best patrol in 51 FNQR for 2011 were presented to soldiers from B Company who undertook a long range patrol of the Western Cape coast and river systems during Operation Resolute. The patrol covered some 320 nautical miles, the longest marine patrol in the battalion’s history whilst on operations. Major Heron congratulated the soldiers on their team work and dedication throughout the training and said he looked forward to catching up with them during community liaison visits throughout the coming year.

THE Chair of Weipa Town Committee, Ms Carrie Gay is calling on residents to get involved in planning for the future of Andoom Oval as a community sport and recreation hub. “In 2010 and 2011, the community told us that improving Andoom Oval to better meet the needs of residents and community groups was an important priority”, she sad. “We are asking the community to attend a visioning and design workshop for Andoom Oval to help guide the preparation of a Master Plan for this important site.” The purpose of the project is to develop a Master Plan which determines the best mix of spaces and facilities to meet the needs of the Weipa community. It will incorporate a written report and a concept plan for Andoom Oval. The Master Plan will include consideration of formal sport and community events such as field sports and rodeo as well as informal activities such as walking, children’s play and exercise. The Plan is being prepared by consultants Strategic Leisure Group on behalf of Weipa Town Authority. The following opportunities will be provided to enable residents to be involved: • Community workshop. • Survey of community groups that currently use or wish to use Andoom Oval. • Access to the study team via email and phone. To register for the Community Workshop or to get in touch with the study team, email: weipa@strategicleisure.com.au or telephone: 4055 6250. Weipa Pest Control proprietors, Michael and Yvonne Rowland will be concentrating on servicing non-Rio residences in the future.
New focus for local pest control company FOR 26 years Weipa P e s t C o n t ro l p ro prietors Yvonne and Michael Rowland have been keeping the people of Weipa safe from creepy-crawlies. Originally coming to Weipa in 1986 to work with Flick, who had the pest control contract with Comalco, the couple started their own business seven years later when Flick pulled out of the town. “Back then Comalco owned every house in town so we were contracted to provide pest services to all the residential accommodation as well as Comalco’s onsite buildings,” Michael said. Yvonne said that when they first began their own business it was difficult to find people at home to provide access for pest control services. “ We c o u l d d o a whole court and find two people at home, so we built the business up by contacting every household individually to arrange a time for us to provide pest control,” she said. Michael said that
through their diligence the couple’s workload had increased to such a level that they were finding it difficult to service the entire town on their own. “We decided that in order to reduce that workload we would no longer be servicing the Rio Tinto housing and on-site buildings, which will allow us time to focus on the other side of our business which is the non-Rio housing,” he said. “The contracts with both Comalco and Rio Tinto have been very good for us, but we’re not getting any younger, so it’s time to slow down a bit and maybe get the boat in the water occassionally.” Michael said he believed Rio Tinto was currently preparing a tender for the supply of pest control and another pest service company would be undertaking the Rio contract. The 2012 schedule for annual pest control of non-Rio Tinto houses is included as an insert in this week’s edition of the Western Cape Bulletin.

Valued views put Cape York stones contributed to memorial forth at fishing forum Alf Wilson story
Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and Senator Richard Colbeck address the forum.
AROUND 100 people who attended the Future of Fishing Forum were vocal in their views on the Government’s lack of consultation when imposing restrictions on the industry. The forum, organised by Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, heard from dozens of people in, or associated with, the commercial, sport and recreational fishing industry at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Club on Wednesday, February 22. Many complained that the current Government, since being elected in 2007, had created obstacles that forced operators to either cut costs or leave the industry altogether. “In formulating its policies to protect fish stocks, the Labor Government is pandering so much to green groups that they seem to have forgotten the needs of the various fishing industries,” Mr Entsch said. “They talk about sustainability when they lock out fishers but they conveniently ignore the fact that they are turning fishing into an unsustainable practice. “The complaints were heard loud and clear at the forum: the fishing industry, whether it be commercial, sport or recreation, has had enough of this current Government running their businesses into the ground because of legislation or regulations that have been devised from selective so-called scientific data. “And I’m sick of it too. Fishing has
been part of the Far North’s backbone since this region was settled and I don’t want to see the trade destroyed by ill-informed bureaucrats or politicians who are too frightened to challenge narrow-minded green groups.” Mr Entsch and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Fishing Senator Richard Colbeck spoke of the Coalition’s desire to involve the fishing industry more in the development of policies, legislation and regulations. Attendees spoke of the industry’s gradual demise in the Far North and how they had been forced to scale back or completely close their operations. “The forum was very productive – there were many cases put forward and several valuable ideas proposed,” Mr Entsch said. “It was quite feisty at times and we were challenged. “But that’s what the meeting was about: to hear the grievances from key players in this industry and to work out solutions to fix the industry and get it thriving again. “Of course, that will require balancing the interests of the industry with the need to preserve fish stocks but it can be done without completely destroying the livelihoods of thousands of people in this region.” LNP State Election candidates Gavin King (Cairns), Michael Trout (Barron River) and Robyn Quick (Mulgrave) also spoke at the forum, emphasising the efforts their party would make to help the fishing industry.

STONES from more than 40 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Queensland formed part of a monument which was unveiled on Palm Island on February 24 as part of the official opening on a Community Cultural Precinct. Hundreds of people gathered on the day at the North Queensland Aboriginal Community to see the opening of the Cultural Precinct which included an Arts Centre, Indigenous Knowledge Centre, Community Meeting Room and the Tom Geia Snr Memorial Bridge. The monument includes plaques with readings of the footprints of Palm Island and the 1957 strike when seven people were punished by authorities. It also recognises others who were prime movers in stolen wages campaigns against the Government. Palm Island Mayor Alf Lacey said the monument unveiling was a highlight of the celebrations.
Stones from Cape York were contributed to the Palm Island memorial.
“Every Indigenous community from the Torres Strait to Cape York, south and west have sent stones for this monument and it is a sacred place here. “It is here so our children
and grandchildren will know of the past injustices here. This is a significant landmark which has come about after much consultation with elders,” Mayor Lacey said.

LNP croc plan balances safety and conservation AN LNP Government will get serious about crocodile management and make public safety the highest priority in a new crocodile management plan, the State Opposition announced this week. LNP Leader Campbell Newman said the recent spotting of a crocodile more than five metres long near a North Queensland school and tourist caravan park had again sparked the need for improved crocodile management in Queensland with an increased focus on public safety. “The growing number of problem crocodiles in North Queensland means we need to strike a balance between conserving crocs and ensuring people don’t get hurt, said Mr Newman. “Currently the safety of Queenslanders is being put at risk because of more unnecessary Labor green tape.
“As the numbers of crocodiles in the wild increase, the LNP believe the existing conservation plan needs to transition to a more responsive management plan. “A Campbell Newman-led LNP government will adopt a scientifically based crocodile management policy consistent with the Northern Territory’s successful three-tiered approach. “The CanDo team’s strategic management policy will involve the development of a risk-based plan that will balance community safety with a sustainable future for crocodiles. “The LNP plan will endeavour to prevent crocodiles from entering certain areas so that the level of risk is low enough for safe swimming and water activities. “The LNP plan will also significantly reduce the risk of attack by removing any
crocodiles that enter boat ramps and marinas; and will require the removal of problem crocodiles that exhibit unprovoked aggressive behaviour towards human beings. “The LNP understands that crocodiles hold major cultural and social significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
LNP vow to strengthen tropical health defences NORTH Queensland will become the focus of a new Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine under an LNP Government’s plan to strengthen Queensland’s tropical health defences. LNP Leader Campbell Newman said a CanDo LNP Government will commit up to $42 million over four years towards establishing the Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine in conjunction with James Cook University with facilities in Townsville, Cairns, and the Torres Strait. “Existing and newly emerging pathogens, such as Dengue Fever, Tuberculosis, Rabies and the Hendra virus, present a health security risk to Queenslanders, particularly those living in or visiting the tropic north, Mr Newman said. “We need to deal with emerging infectious diseases before they become established as public health emergen-

cies. This is not only about health but protecting our economy in sectors like agriculture. “An LNP government will secure our borders through early detection and response in order to achieve the best health outcomes and protect Queenslanders. Mr Newman said establishing the Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine with James Cook University will encourage research into how to limit, prevent, and decrease the transmission of infectious diseases from the Asia-Pacific region into Queensland. “Queensland will also be well placed to assist with early detection of diseases at the frontline, to provide rapid and effective interventions and facilitate the coordination of clinicians and researchers in responding to new threats, Mr Newman said. “The LNP understands the importance of protecting both Queenslanders and our agriculture industry from the threat of disease,
and will be proactive in combating these risks, now and in the future. “The LNP’s positive plan for Queensland will grow a four pillar economy to create jobs for families, as we understand the importance of getting the basics right. The Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine will also provide training programs, particularly in disease surveillance and control and risk identification, and help to build an integrated health security network focused on significant biosecurity threats. “This vital initiative is part of the LNP’s focus on science and technology and our commitment to revitalise frontline health services by delivering much needed health research infrastructure to protect all Queenslanders, Mr Newman said. “You can’t improve health services and act proactively to address biosecurity risks without a change of Government.
Islander people across northern Australia. “An LNP Government will match the response to the specific needs of each local area in order to take real action to reduce the likelihood of a fatal crocodile attack on the community, Mr Newman said.
Vote for your country KATTER’S Australian Party will use the campaign theme of ‘Vote for your country’ during the Queensland State Election. State Leader, Aidan McLindon, said that policies undertaken by the ALP and LNP across Australia had sold Australia out and sold its assets off. “Queenslanders have the opportunity to lead the fightback against these policies on behalf of all Australians, said Mr McLindon. “Now is the time that we must vote for Australia and vote for our country because too much has already been lost. There is not much time left to save Australia’s manufacturing, tourism and agricultural industries. “Too much of farming land is owned by foreign governments and companies. Multinational mining giants have more control over property than the Australians living on it. Too many of our factories and manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas. “Even white collar jobs are at risk with the banks training up foreigners to replace Australians in what is nothing more than a blatant cash grab at the expense of Aussie families. “Our assets are being flogged off at an alarming pace and in the most deceitful manner. It doesn’t matter whether it is an ALP or LNP government. “Bligh sold Queensland’s assets and just across the border the LNP government is auctioning off the power industry, despite being elected on a promise to protect it. “Both parties support the same economic policies that destroy Australia’s wealth and hurt Australian families. “That is why we are asking Queenslanders to vote for their country and vote for the Australian Party. “If you vote for the ALP or LNP your vote goes off shore, if you vote for the Australian Party your vote stays in Australia.

O’Brien outlines his vision for Weipa MEMBER for Cook Jason O’Brien has hit the campaign trail in Weipa this week outlining his vision for Weipa. Mr O’Brien said that while he had achieved a great deal for Weipa, in particular the new hospital, a revolution in facilities at the school, better roads, and better community facilities such as the skatepark and pool, there is still a lot to do. “Weipa remains the only area in Queensland not covered by a Local Government Authority Area. I think as Weipa continues to grow it is going to be of critical importance that the community drives local decision making around the town plan and what services and facilities can be provided for local families. “Whether Weipa can stand alone or must join in with Cook Shire to be ďŹ nancially viable is of secondary importance to the fact that decisions about that community must be made in a democratic way,â€? Mr O’Brien said. “The other great challenge for Weipa, Napranum, Mapoon and the rest of the Cape is the challenge of our generation. This challenge is how we grow the economy and provide jobs while at the same time protect our environment. This balance can only be created with careful planning. “So while I support expansion of Rio Tinto’s operations with the South of the Embley project and the mining of the Aurukun bauxite reserves, I also think we must protect our pristine river systems

LNP must reveal “plan Bâ€? ALP candidate for Cook Jason O’Brien MP, has called on LNP candidate David Kempton to tell the people of Cook who will be Premier if the LNP wins government, but Campbell Newman doesn’t win the Brisbane electorate of Ashgrove. Mr O’Brien said Parliamentary Opposition Leader Jeff Seeney was last week forced into an embarrassing public backip, saying he would not be Premier in the event of an LNP victory without Newman, after refusing to rule himself out of a leadership tilt at a press conference. Deputy LNP Leader Tim Nicholls is also refusing to rule out staking a claim to the leadership, despite the LNP’s ofďŹ cial line that they cannot win government if Campbell Newman is not elected. “The LNP need to win 14 seats to govern in their own right and Ashgrove is

Western Cape Beat Drivers licensing
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
Last week the Department of Transport upgraded the Drivers Licensing System at the Weipa Police Station. We are very happy to announce that we can now issue the latest Drivers License cards from the police station. License prices have increased slightly and we still unfortunately accept cash only. License times remain the same.... Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 1pm and then again from 2:30pm to 4pm. The new license takes a little longer to issue so please allow plenty of time. Remember it is an offence to drive with an expired licence. Please take a moment to check the expiration date, address etc on your drivers license...if you do need to update or renew your licence please allow at least a week before the expiry date as we may not be able to issue licences on some days due to some unforseen circumstances. We look forward to seeing you and remember to bring a smile.

Thefts / Burglary’s
School Cross Country
Weipa has seen an increase in the number of burglary’s and car thefts in the last couple of weeks. Often the items stolen are of little or no value to the thief, however the event proves to be extremely inconvenient and costly to the victim. Not to mention the impact of knowing someone has been inside your house whilst you were asleep. Fortunately, most of these thefts can be avoided and prevented by locking your car and securing your property. “Lock it or loose it”.... Weipa police walk these streets regularly and often don’t travel more then a couple of houses before finding an unlocked car with valuables in clear view. More concerning is that in some of these unlocked cars we will find the keys still in the ignition! It is astounding the assets
Weipa police donated their time and skills to help out the Western Cape College Cross country events last Friday. We would like to thank all motorists for their courtesy and effort in keeping the kids safe. The kids had a great day and some of the teachers should get Oscars for their outfits and energy. Congratulations to all the winners. Further thanks to all the supporting parents and family for driving and parking safely around the school area during the events.
On a lighter note... The winner of the police traffic control award goes to our new Sergeant Allan DEWIS. Excellent Work Sergeant. Your perspiring was inspiring.

available to opportunistic thieves who walk the streets at night, often bored and wanting some excitement. The Weipa Police work very hard to prevent and solve all thefts with rewarding success, however this is lost when we advise the victims their vehicles have been damaged and they then realise the cost of replacing the damage parts comes out of their pocket without restitution. Please lock your car. Burglaries reflect the same feedback...if you lock your doors and windows there is a greatly reduced chance that your property will get broken into. If you have security screens make sure that you lock them with the key... flicking the switch doesn’t stop thieves from breaking the screen and opening the door. Unfortunately thieves in Weipa don’t ever have to walk far before finding unlocked doors and windows or items of value left on back patios with a sleeping guard dog nearby. Please take care of your property.
It’s amazing how many prophecies that were given about the coming Messiah in the Old Testament were fulfilled in the life of Jesus Christ. One day we may have a look at all those prophecies from the Old Testament about the Messiah and how they were fulfilled in the New Testament. It proves the point that God is always in charge. Mark Ch 11 vs 12 -14 in this case should be read with verses 20-26
of the same chapter (11). So please read them together. We read of the Lord going to a fig tree for help with his hunger, but the fig tree, having leaves, did not have fruit as it should have had, so the Lord ordered the tree never to fruit again. He was showing by these actions that if his followers had real faith, they could move anything that’s in the way of their Christian walk. But the fig tree
is also a picture of the poor spiritual state of Israel that was supposed to give fruit of God’s will to the surrounding nations, but had no fruit to give. Jesus is showing that there will come a time when it’s spiritual practices will die altogether by God’s hand. To end, read Jeremiah Ch 18 verses 1-12 and note the word “uproot”. G o d ’s g r a c e b e poured on his creation. Rev Michael Connolly.
Entsch calls for HEP scheme means testing FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has called for a student funding program that targets indigenous youths to be meanstested so all disadvantaged children have access to better education. Mr Entsch has received complaints from Weipa parents who cannot afford to send their children to regional centres for schooling because they are not eligible for funding under the Federal Government’s Higher Expectations Program (HEP), which benefits disadvantaged indigenous youth aged 12 and older. He said the program should be means-tested and reviewed to include non-indigenous children who were economically and geographically disadvantaged. “The HEP scheme should not be limited to indigenous families,” Mr Entsch said. “The issue at hand is that many Cape York and Torres Strait families are disadvantaged, not just indigenous ones. All families should have access to this financial support.” Families covered by HEP pay about $40 a week to send their children to a boarding school in Cairns. But parents who do not qualify for the scheme pay up to $600 a week. “The economic situation in the northern Cape means many families of both moderate and high incomes are eligible for the scheme’s funding,” Mr Entsch said. “Their neighbours, who may in fact earn a lower income, are denied access to this scheme. “I support all initiatives by any tier of government to provide opportunities for indigenous Australians but I believe the government is overlooking the fact that non-indigenous families

Researchers claim $70 million needed for Aboriginal eye health THE eye health of indigenous people could be vastly improved if state and federal governments kick in $70 million, according to researchers from the University of Melbourne. The researchers say $70 million over five years would be enough to bring indigenous eye health into line with other Australians. also need access to such financial support, especially for education.” The scheme, in its current form, also encouraged indigenous students to move away from their communities to schools where they could excel, Mr Entsch said. “It’s a well-intended program but it’s divisive,” he said. “It benefits some families but frustrates other families who endure similar challenges.” Mr Entsch raised the issue with the Government last year after receiving complaints from disadvantaged families who did not meet the HEP criteria. He has written a scathing letter to Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth Peter Garrett who failed to address his constituents’ grievances or explain why the scheme was not available for all battling families. “It’s apparent that any fair dealings in relation to the HEP scheme and disadvantaged families will need to wait until there has been a change in government,” Mr Entsch said.

population, with 94 per cent of the vision loss unnecessary, preventable or treatable. For indigenous people aged in their 80s about 14 per cent are blind, compared to just four per cent for other Australians. Professor Hugh Taylor, an expert in indigenous eye health who co-authored the report, said that, unlike other medical problems, eye issues could be fixed quickly once treatment is given. “If you give somebody a pair of glasses they can see right
away,” Professor Taylor said. “If you have cataract surgery basically your vision is restored overnight,” he said. Professor Taylor said while some of the money would go towards providing access to ophthalmologists and optometrists, most of it would be used to co-ordinate and manage eye care so people with problems didn’t slip through the cracks. “We now have the plan and if we have the will and government support we can solve this critical health issue,” he said.

LETTERS
Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Disgusted by campaign claims FOR the second time in 10 years an issue has prompted me to write to the community of Weipa through this column. Myself and my partner are employed by RTA Weipa, are heavily involved in the community through various committees and volunteer organisations, and feel that we have made a contribution to continuing to make Weipa the great place it is to live. Our children attend the local school. Weipa is home for us - not just a “five year plan. It saddens me that a chairperson candidate that has lived in Weipa, this time around, for approx 24 months, and recently became a ratepayer for the first time, finds that he needs to launch his campaign by attacking “Rio, claiming that council has “wasted its time for the past four years, and blaming lack of spending in the township
on everything but the Global Financial Crisis and the sustainability of a business. It appears easy for this chairperson candidate to blame “Rio for everything that he feels is inadequate in this community. I would like to point out that I am “Rio, my partner is “Rio, and I hope that my children will be “Rio. The chairperson candidate’s partner is “Rio, his working-age children are “Rio. The hard work done every single day by “Rio’s 1000 employees goes towards making this a sustainable operation. I do this, not only to continue to receive my salary and to support my family, but to hopefully contribute to making the operation viable and for “Rio to continue its presence in our community. The chairperson candidate was not a resident of Weipa at the time, but needs to be aware that “Rio saved 300 jobs in our community when other mines around the country (and world)
were cutting numbers as quickly as they could. That was a direct result of the actions of that same “senior executive he is so quick to condone. I am positive that the partners and children of those 300 employees see the value in the fight that was had, and won, by the same “senior executive. The chairperson candidate has been heard to say that “RTA Weipa management don’t care about the community and have a short tenure. The “senior executive and family have had over 20 years association with Weipa, and continue to make every single decision in the best interest of the business and the community. These decisions may not be printed in the paper. These may be decisions that the majority of people will never know about. These are decisions that secure your current livelihood, my livelihood and many others. There is not a month goes by that I don’t see unsung acts of support for employees and our community. They are

not all published in the newspaper, they are not all put in letters to the editor, they are not all headliners, but they are acts of support done for no other reason than to support employees and members of the community. Ask all the local community groups that have benefited from “Rio’s community donations; ask the children that are offered scholarships or traineeships; ask the families that have had assistance in times of tragedy; ask the Weipa Town Authority how many times it has been assisted through “in-kind support and assistance. It is also of concern that the chairperson candidate is using “scare mongering to launch a campaign. A recent letter to the editor heads with “Alarm bells ring at FIFO announcement, followed by two small paragraphs of comment, and then the balance of the letter with four columns of statistics that may apply to a FIFO operation. RTA Weipa is not a FIFO operation and there is no intention for it to ever be. The “senior executive has committed to this on many occasions. As the article above the chairperson candidate’s letter states, the “transitional housing will apply to very few new employees, to save them being away from their families for an extended period of time while waiting for allocation of housing.
It is not a choice offered to live in Cairns and FIFO, but a choice “Rio is offering to assist the new employees to remain close to their family unit. Who could ever say this is a bad thing or not a display of committing to family and community? The claim by the chairperson candidate that he is (I quote) “passionate about the Weipa Town Authority and quite frankly I am disappointed with the last four years disgusts me. I personally know the commitment and effort that the candidates and chairperson that served during this time put in. They put in the hard yards that come with being part of a local authority, not just looking to produce headlinegrabbing articles in the local press. These are the people that moved dirt around the lakes for the community, put their own time into following-up on residents concerns, researched the decisions they made, met with Ministers to engage them in our community, continued to fight for, and successfully received government contributions, built a skatepark, monitored the development of our community and the list goes on. To those councillors and the chairperson I am sure it was not seen as a “waste of time. I thank you chairperson and councillors for your time, energy and the
decisions you have made that have benefited our community in the past four years. The chairperson candidate comments on his “insight into the strategic direction for Weipa and his “plan to lead the implementation. Furthermore, he states that he “has a plan which will see Weipa progress into the future and it goes on and on. This makes me ask, is it all about you Mr Chairperson Candidate and your strategic direction and your implementation strategy? Will you allow the community and the elected councillors to have a say or is it just a done deal? The chairperson candidate is claiming that he will put “real ‘action’ into the community plan and the substantial and strategic advocacy with Rio Tinto and government. My concern is, how are any elected councillors, Weipa Town Authority staff and community members going to overcome and work with, a person that has such obvious disdain and a negative approach to the major industry and employer in our area? Can the community and councillors afford for this candidate to undo relationships that have been built by the previous chairperson through the best interests of the community, not the interests of an individual? The comment made that “pressure applied to WTA staff as a conse-
quence is unacceptable, and will not sit well with a new WTA post April 28, 2012 implies to me that you feel your election campaign is home and hosed. Could you possibly entertain the idea that the community may not want you as chairperson, that they may want to exercise their own opinion and vote for another candidate? Chairperson candidate, I frankly am quite surprised that Weipa, the Weipa Town Authority, the Cape, the marine industry, the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce and for that matter “Rio have survived this long without your immense knowledge and “strategic direction! As stated in one of your many tirades, I will not be hoping for a better Weipa, but voting for one – one that puts Weipa first, not Peter McCulkin first. Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Maritime expansion critical to Weipa’s future A MEETING between several members of the Chamber of Commerce and senior executives of North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation during their recent visit to Weipa certainly generated very positive discussion about absolutely critical marine infrastructure for the town. Never before has a marina, marine maintenance facility and new public boating facilities been more critical to the future growth of Weipa and its economic sustainability. A little-known fact, and one that should be utilised more to promote the region, is that there are currently between 40 and 50 world and Australian fishing records held by fishers while fishing the waters off Weipa. Weipa’s offshore billfishing grounds, now receiving national attention from fishing writers, reinforces the critical need for marina facilities to meet latent demand for larger vessels and their maintenance. The Chamber of Commerce, Weipa Town Authority (WTA) and the state government helped fund a marina scoping study back in 2009. To date there has been very little movement with this potential project, with the Chamber of Commerce unable to gain the required local political support. Post April 28, Weipa local elections will see a much closer working relationship between the Chamber of C o m m e r c e a n d We i p a
Town Authority across a broad range of initiatives. Not only has the Chamber struggled for support with the marina concept but also the re-opening of the Stones Crossing Road and tourist access through Bertiehaugh; but more importantly the sportfishing tourism strategy released in 2010 by the Chamber. This strategy is a transformational ‘blue print’ to grow sportfishing tourism in the region and has largely been ignored by government. This is the area the WTA will play a far more proactive role in the future, in an advocacy role with the relevant government agencies and ministers. The Rocky Point boat ramp would have never been refurbished during the term of the previous WTA 2004-2008 had it not been for this type of advocacy. A town with the highest boat ownership in the state deserves a much better return on their collective contributions to the state’s maritime ‘coffers’. This is the message that has clearly not been delivered of late, with issues about Albatross Bay still outstanding and a boat ramp at Evans Landing that clearly does not meet current needs and continues to be a major headache for Bulk Ports. The recent information from the Australian Defence Force Posture Review further reinforces the obvious need for updated marine infrastructure here in Weipa. This Review of the ADF’s capabilities; with the final report to be released in April-May, will report that the current capabilities across Northern Australia are inadequate to protect our sea lanes,

resources and ports. As the most northern Australian deep water port, with abundant mineral resources, and sitting adjacent to major sea lanes, Weipa is well positioned to provide critical Naval support by way of berthing, victualing and refuelling in a new era for border protection. Marine infrastructure must be upgraded and should be done to meet future naval requirements. The WTA will in future take a tripartite approach to discussions with the Navy and Bulk Ports to determine how best Weipa can leverage benefits from this current review. Another really interesting tourism initiative that appeared in the draft of our community plan, following broad community consultation, is the concept of linking the Territory to Weipa by sea with a vehicular ferry. What a fantastic opportunity it would be for our local tourism industry, with travellers having an option of completing their around-Australia journey via Weipa. It is this type of initiative, the marina, the Stones Crossing Road and sportfishing tourism strategy that promise to provide our town with a vibrant, diversified economy that is not reliant on any one single industry. These are key projects that a new WTA will endeavour to bring to fruition. While some maritime issues have been covered, I can promise that roads, curbing and channelling will not be forgotten either! Don’t just hope for a better Weipa, vote for one on April 28. Peter McCulkin, Candidate for chair, Weipa Town Authority

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed Whiskas or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a ‘good little hunter’ I am. Morons. There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of ‘allergies’. I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow – but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. She is regularly released – and seems to be more than willing to return. She is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...

ADVERTORIAL
The strange similarities between fishing and financial planning ONE could easily suggest that they have absolutely nothing in common, and to a certain extent you are correct. However, as most successful people will know, whether you are fishing, or trying to manage your finances, the outcome will be based on the level of preparation that is undertaken. Fortunately I have the pleasure to now carry out my profession as a financial planner, in one of my favourite fishing locations in Australia. For those existing Weipa locals who are familiar with TFS Financial Planning, TFS has been travelling to Weipa for the last 15 years providing financial advice to meet client’s needs. The recent internal change of Sean Ryan taking a more hands-on management role with the firm has enabled me the opportunity to take on the ongoing responsibility of servicing TFS existing client base in Weipa, and to continue to take on new clients who may have recently relocated to Weipa as part of the continual changing workforce.
I would like to highlight that as the majority of Weipa residents are either fishing, camping or hunting inclined, it is pretty safe to assume that the average resident may spend more time planning their next adventure then reviewing their annual finances. With regards to planning a fishing trip, you need to know some basics - are the weather and tides right; do I have the latest lures available – hard bodies or soft plastic; are they the right depth and colours for the location? Is the rod really up-to the species that I am targeting? In comparison, in reviewing finances, do we really have the savings capacity to go on that holiday, purchase that boat, or can funds be used more wisely making additional home loan repayments, taking advantage of salary packaging opportunities or looking to save for our child’s education? Do we have appropriate insurances in place should the unforeseen happen? You soon get the picture. It is pretty safe to assume that there are a large number

of Weipa residents not making the most of the opportunities that are available. Ultimately, while individuals may decide to reside in Weipa to meet their lifestyle needs, generally like most mining communities, people are looking for the higher levels of remuneration that mining communities may offer to meet their longer term wealth accumulation goals. So if you fall into the category of spending more time preparing for your next fishing, camping or hunting trip and neglect to ensure that you are truly taking advantage of any one of the strategies that could make the difference between you ensuring that you have a greater chance of meeting your retirement goals, then it is worth spending the time to review what is really important to you and how you can plan for a successful financial future. I will be travelling to Weipa on Tuesday the 27th through to 29th of March. To book an appointment please phone our office on 07 4046 5555.

IT’S official! Weipa is to have its cyclone shelter outfitted as an indoor sports centre, courtesy of a welcome $200,000 gift from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and when the state government told us to find our own money for the indoor sports part of the building, Weipa Town Authority (WTA) explored other avenues, culminating in this wonderful announcement on Friday, February 24. What is happening with changes to Weipa’s governance? This is so difficult to answer as it is out of WTA’s hands at the moment. WTA, along with Rio Tinto Alcan, have provided a risk analysis, gap analysis, and an independent asset assessment to assist with financial modelling and the financial modelling by the Queensland Treasury Corporation for a standalone
Carrie Gay, Weipa Town Authority Chair
Weipa or an amalgamation with Cook. Once WTA has access to the QTC Report, community feedback will be sought. Getting Weipa onto the political and public agenda, took time and there are still many issues left up in the air. The distribution of assets is a prime issue. Who owns/is responsible for water supply, sewerage treatment, roads, tip, airport? Land availability and broadening of boundaries, honouring existing agreements and the formation of a transition plan. On top of all this we could see a new state government installed in the next few weeks which could hasten or slow negotiations. Happy birthday to our esteemed editor who turns 50 this week! For a woman like her 50 is a mere blip and she is definitely on the up and up! Congratulations G.
DIABETES AWARENESS Family meal times foster good health WE all know regular family meal times are good for us... That’s if and when we can muster up the organisation to throw a few placemats on the table, hope our cutlery has landed in the right order, drag our kids to their seats free of their Nintendo DS and iPhones, remove our meal from the oven in fine fashion – fingerscrossed it’s not burnt or spilling over the side – throw off our apron and plonk ourselves in place to hopefully big smiles from the panel of hungry hippos in anticipation of a good feed. There may be a greater motivator to all the meal-time madness than we initially thought, too. Research shows that regular family meal times can decrease an adolescent’s chance of being overweight or obese, and improve a child’s nutritional health and wellbeing. The findings, released by the University of Illinois in the US, support our call at Diabetes Queensland for families to help each other toward healthy lifestyles by ensuring nutritious diets, helping every member maintain a healthy weight and engaging in regular exercise together. These commitments can help prevent chronic
diseases later in life such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. I believe as parents, we have a great opportunity to help our kids learn how to eat well and live right, and take the time to do the same for ourselves. The stats for our state reflect how busy we are, and how health can sometimes slip as a priority for us – only eight per cent of Queensland adults meet or exceed the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, and 60 per cent of us aren’t getting enough exercise. The stats about childhood obesity are quite frightening too. One in four kids are currently overweight or obese. But it’s so encouraging that we can do our part in the fight against these figures simply by sitting around the table together regularly over a meal. S p e c i f i c a l l y, t h e University of Illinois study found adolescents who ate with their family three times or more each week were 12 per cent less likely to suffer from being overweight or obese. Children who participated in at least five family meals were 25 per cent less likely to develop nutritional health issues, and had better eating patterns,

including a higher intake of fruits and vegetables. Presently, Diabetes Queensland, Heart Foundation, Cancer Council Queensland, and Nutrition Australia QLD are combining forces to see children and adults across the state become Swappers, and lose their belly without losing out on the things they love, by committing to small swaps daily. A small swap may be just the start you need toward a healthier life. Whether it’s swapping driving the kids to school for walking the kids to school, swapping high-sugar, low fibre breakfast cereals for high grain and high fibre options, or swapping a Sunday drive for a Sunday bike ride, there are plenty of family swap ideas available at www.swapit.gov.au. And remember – amidst the flying spaghetti, broccoli left untouched on dinner plates and the full sink of dirty dishes that awaits, take a breath, hold your head high and remember that family meal time chaos has long-term health benefits for all! WEIPA DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Carpentaria Golf Club Contact: Tonia 0429 699 300 or Randall 0428 199 248

The former Normanton Stinger has been selected in the senior Pride squad for 2012, but has not forgotten his roots. Crampton said he had immense pride in representing not only Normanton, but also North Queensland as a whole. “I am very proud of my heritage and where I come from, and will display that passion out on the park this season,” Crampton said. “Our team is made up of North Queenslanders striving to do the best for our region, and we don’t plan to let anyone down. “We made the finals last year, but we want to go all the way in 2012. “North Queensland residents can help us do just that by supporting us and getting involved.” And for the first time, North Queensland residents will get to see their local stars
and Jeff Ball. Next Saturday is a Single stroke competition and on Sunday a 4BBB Stableford. We are losing another of our golf players with the departure of Viv and Jeff who are heading to Gladstone, I would like to take this opportunity to wish them both Jeff and Viv all the best. Good golfing – Wendy Grainger Club Captain
Phil loses lures, wins competition DOUBLE points for barra on the weekend saw many Weipa Sportsfishing Club members put in an effort to wet a line. Despite losing two lures, the compettion was taken out by Phil with a whopping 940 points, thanks to some quality barra. Dylan secured the highest points for the juniors, weighing in some nice queenfish. Surprisingly, Phil and Dylan also won the lucky lures for the weigh-in. The club also welcomes the Gane family, who already
have some fishy tales to tell after Emmy lost a nice mackeral on four kilo line. Competition was strong from her sister Mia though, pictured with her prize catch for the weekend. For those of us that aren’t working or busy fishing in NZ, the next competition will be held on March 24 and 25. This month will see us targeting King Salmon with the chance of doubling your points for a weigh in. The meeting will be held at Col and Liz’s house Sunday at 5.30pm. See you there Elisa
Mia with her prize catch from the Weipa Sportsfishing Club’s weekend.

On Sunday we played a Single Stableford sponsored by Viv and Jeff Ball and the winner, with 41 points, was Steve Wust, closely followed by Match with 39 points. The NTP went to Steve Wust

Let the footy begin – round one here we come IT is here finally! After a super long off-season, the 2012 kick-off is fast approaching and the first game of the season is on Thursday night. The early rounds of the NRL are usually very unpredictable, as all sides are looking for their best start possible to the season. If you are tipping well in the early rounds, I do think you will have lady luck on your side, as there are generally some very interesting results early on. I am predicting a early call in the Cowboys being undefeated along with Newcastle at the top of the table after the first four rounds. Thursday night will see the kick-off to the season between the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Newcastle Knights in Newcastle. Can Wayne Bennett get a early victory over his former team? Stars to watch in
the game will be Ben Hornby, Beau Scott and Jamie Soward for the Dragons while Darius Boyd, Akila Uate and Kurt Gidley will be exciting to watch for the Knights. The Friday night blockbuster will feature a new era for the Broncos taking on Parramatta in Sydney without the great Darren Lockyer. I’m sure new captain Sam Thaiday will lead his young team admirably against the Jarad Hayne and Chris Sandow show for Parramatta. Super Saturday kicks off in Canberra with the Raiders taking on powerhouse Melbourne Storm. Can the green machine stop the Storm’s big three Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cam Smith? If the Raider’s big forward pack dominates they could produce the first upset of the year. Des Hasler’s Canterbury Bull-
dogs travel west to take on the Penrith Panthers which should be one hell of a battle. I’m sure both teams will be looking for a good win to start the season off. The final game on Saturday night is in Townsville when the Gold Coast Titans travel north to take on the mighty North Queensland Cowboys. I think the Cowboys will have too much class with Jonathan Thurston cleverly guiding the home side to a comfortable victory. Sunday afternoon footy is back, and we will see the 2011 grand final replay with the premiers Manly travelling across the Tasman to play against a very fired-up home side in the New Zealand Warriors. Back in Sydney the new look Cronulla Sharks will come up against premiership favourites the West Tigers. Monday night footy gets
off to a great start with a local derby when the South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the Sydney Roosters. This Saturday is the Weipa Sevens so get on down to the footy oval and you’ll see some great entertaining footy as we
showcase the many talented players up here in the Cape. Spilla’s round one tips: Knights, Eels, Storm, Bulldogs, Cowboys, Warriors, Sharks, Rabbitohs. Yours in league Spilla

hard bodied deep diving lures, or even tossing out a pilly on ganged hooks, fish that size usually takes anything. There are plenty of QueenďŹ sh along the rock shoreline heading out to Wooldrum if you are up for a bit of fun. There are plenty of choices to try like Twisty metal jigs, Poppers, live bait or maybe a Clouses Minnow fly. They are not huge, 2kg or so, but there should be a couple metre pluses hanging around the drop off into the channel. Apparently the road to Stones Crossing has had a blade over it so a day trip is now on the agenda. Plenty of Barra and Togas’ to be had and with the Wenlock having had some good runs the Barra should be worth eating. The Crocs moving about with all the thunder we have been having so be very wary when wading or swimming. Still getting some report of Tuskies being caught out around Duyfken. Try drifting some Prawns or soft plastic Crabs to the bottom without any sinker, hear tell it works wonders as it looks so natural. There are also some good Fingermark out there as well, soft plastics like 7â€? Gulps on 1.5 ounce 7/0 jig head works a treat and Nuclear Chicken the best colour choice. Haven’t had any pics of late so if you have some no matter how old they are send them to the email address above, catch up with you all next week.

WEIPA Squash Club is up and running again for 2012. We began by holding a beginner’s night on Thursday, February 16 which was well attended, and from which we have recruited a few new players so the night was indeed a success! Thank you to Lukas Dorsett (our fearless leader) for utilising his “teachingâ€? skills on the new talent, and to any other skilled players on that night who lent a hand (as I, although unskilled, was regrettably unable to attend). This led into our ďŹ rst week of gradings which were held on February 21 and 23, these nights have been extremely

THANKS to living in such a unique part of the world, Weipa, we probably have some of the best fishing you could wish for, and the world would be jealous only if they knew. The reason I made that statement is because you don’t have to make much of an effort to get a good feed of fresh ďŹ sh. For example we had two anglers land in Weipa from one of our Government departments and had a couple of hours to kill before ying out again. They bought a handline each and some bait and a small bit of tackle and headed off to the Mission River bridge only to return an hour later with a 68cm Fingermark weighing around 3kg. Not to be out done I thought I would give it a try, mine wasn’t quite as big but I was only there for 15 minutes and still suffering a bit of shock, must have been a uke I mean me catching a ďŹ sh that quick. Take a look at Dave Kay from the camping grounds, heads out to the channel markers, on the bow wave of a bulk carrier in a 12 foot tinny mind, and with hardly any effort bags an esky full of Macks or Jewies, don’t know anywhere else you can achieve those kind of results. If you are looking for some school Spanish Mackerel around the 6 kg mark, head out to the shipping markers and look for some bait balls about the size of a 4B, there are plenty of them all the way down to Pera. You can use metal slugs,
