Wet ‘n’ wild weather wreaks havoc

Main photo: This huge mahogany tree became uprooted during the height of Thursday’s “mini cyclone”, destroying a garden shed and blocking access to Annandi Avenue, Rocky Point. WEIPA residents were rudely awakened last Thursday morning by what many have described as a “mini cyclone”. Heavy rain, combined with squally wind gusts, began affecting the town at around 6am and the deluge continued until mid-morning, wreaking havoc in several suburbs. Rocky Point appeared to be the worst affected area with large trees uprooted blocking roads, sheds and fences destroyed and localised flooding. One Rocky Point resident said he

was making a cup of tea just after 6am when he heard the wind begin to howl. “The wind was causing a real racket, and then I heard an almighty crash and went outside to see a huge mahogany had come down and blocked the road, and my neighbours shed had been destroyed as the tree was uprooted,” he said. Another Rocky Point resident witnessed a tsunami in his backyard when an enormous tree broke in half and landed in his swimming pool. The lining of the pool split open from the impact and thousands of litres of water gushed into the yard.

“Fortunately the water went around the house, but it was a pretty impressive sight!” the resident said. “The wind gusts were just phenomenal and I’m surprised there is not more damage to the property.” Weipa Town Authority, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, Carpentaria Contracting and Sodexo staff were joined by Weipa SES and other volunteers to commence the clean-up and ensure the safety of all residents. Despite fallen trees and branches, and a number of flying objects, there were no reports of injury during Thursday’s storm. UU more photos inside

New Quartermaster welcomed to B Coy THE staff of B Coy 51 FNQR welcomed the newly-promoted Sergeant Marco Crescenzi last week when he marched in to replace Mark Pollock as the Company Quartermaster of the Weipa Depot. Sgt Crescenzi enlisted into the Army in July 2001, and has had two deployments, the first on Operation Sumatra Assist 2004/5 to support the Boxing Day Tsunami relief effort, and the second to Afghanistan in 2009 on Operation Slipper as part of the Mentoring Task Force 2. We’re not too sure of his sporting preferences, although he is a mad keen Dockers fan and his hobbies include four-wheel driving, fishing and camping so he should fit right in in Weipa.

Sergeant Marco Crescenzi is welcomed to B Coy 51 FNQR Weipa by Major Jamie Heron.

AUSTRALIAN mobile phone numbers will go public next month, meaning all mobile phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies. Not only will most people find this incredibly annoying, but it could also be costly as phone calls received from telemarketers on your mobile phone will be charged to you. However, there is a way to avoid receiving these unsolicited telemarketing calls to your mobile and home phones, as well as your fax. Go to www.donotcall.gov.au and register your phone numbers with the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s “Do Not Call Register”. The register is free and it takes only a few minutes to register. Although you will still receive calls from some public interest organisations, such as charities, political parties and educational institutions, those pesky unsolicited telemarketers will be kept at bay. If you are registering for the first time it can take up to 30 days for marketing agencies to recognise your registration and stop calling or faxing your number(s) so it’s probably worthwhile getting in now before mobile phone numbers are released. Registration is valid for five years and you can re-register any time. Phone registration is also available by calling 1300 792 958.

New Council office hours THE Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council offices have new opening hours. The offices are now open to the public from 8.15am to noon, and from 1pm to 4.15pm. “Policing the Coen” AFTER three years of research and writing, retired Coen police officer Jock MacDonald, officially launched his book, “Policing the Coen” on December 10, 2011. Spending most of his career in Coen, Jock said “I wanted a transfer out of Brisbane so I was 19 when I arrived at Coen… I settled into the lifestyle and frankly I loved it. In fact I went back to Brisbane but couldn’t cop it so I went back.” Published on a strictly limited edition print run and funded by the Cook Shire Community Donations Program, the book can be viewed at the Cooktown and Coen libraries.

Elephants on Cape York? AN Australian scientist, looking to solve the problems of rampant bush fires and introduced species, has made the radical suggestion that wild African elephants should be introduced to the Australian outback, the Australian Geographic website reports. Professor David Bowman, an environmental scientist at the University of Tasmania, in Hobart, is the author of a commentary published last week in the journal Nature, which considers the problems of bush fires and feral flora and fauna in a new light. ‘The piece is intentionally challenging, David says. “We are going to be driven, whether we like it or not, to think outside the square, because current approaches to land management in many of our landscape settings are not working. For example, he says, they are not succeeding in controlling the invasive gamba grass that leads to frequent intense fires in Australia’s north as the sheer magnitude of the landscape

makes short-term slashing and aerial spraying programs impractical, and biological solutions are needed instead. The article proposes that large herbivores like elephants, rhinos and Komodo dragons be used as “grass-eating machines and, used alongside traditional Aboriginal patch burning, could help manage fire risk in the north and control species such as rabbits, goats and pigs, that have been all but impossible to manage. “Using mega-herbivores may ultimately be more practical and cost-effective, and it would help to conserve animals that are threatened by poaching in their native environments. Other experts are sceptical that the idea could work in practice. One problem is that elephants will eat much more than just gamba grass, says Professor Patricia Werner, an ecologist at the Australian National University in Canberra. “They eat not only grass but leaves, twigs, fruits, roots and even bark, she says. “An adult

elephant can eat 150-300kg of vegetation a day, only about half of which is grass. Are we in Australia prepared to try yet another landscape-scale ‘experiment’ and merely hope that the elephants don’t find our native Australian trees tasty? “Professor Bowman is obviously trying to raise some very important issues that we face in Australia; the problem is that his comments are careless, argues Dr Ricky Spencer, with the Native and Pest Animal Unit at the University of Western Sydney. “If we did go down the road of introducing elephants Australia, we had better develop the technology to clone sabre-tooth tigers to eventually control the elephants.

Flooded out three times in two weeks THE owners of The Anchorage on Tonkin Drive at Rocky Point are “at the end of their tether” after water inundated their property on Monday afternoon for the third time in two weeks. Co-owner, Peter “Crazy” Graham told the Western Cape Bulletin he had contacted the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) many times over the years about the drainage problems in the street but it seems his complaints have fallen on deaf ears. “There is a dirt table-drain that runs alongside Tonkin Drive and water in the drain is channelled to two small pipes which run under the road near the sewerage pump station behind our property,” Crazy said. “When we have heavy downpours of rain, like we have had in the past couple of weeks, the pipes are unable to cope with the sheer volume of water and our property is inundated.” When the water level inside the enclosed patio of the manager’s residence reached 23 centimetres on Monday afternoon, Crazy saw red and contacted WTA. “WTA sent a representative over immediately, however we were told that patio areas are not designed to be ‘habitable areas’ so the flooding wasn’t really an issue. Like most people we have furniture and other items in our patio area and it is all now ruined.” “As ratepayers we have to pay to have plans drawn up for these areas, and pay for building applications, but

when something like this happens the WTA doesn’t want to know about it. “And it’s not just our patio area, the entire property is under six inches of water which flows in from the swollen drain in Tonkin Drive,” an infuriated Crazy said. On Monday evening Crazy received confirmation that the WTA would engage a local contractor to conduct earthworks at the site of the drain on Tuesday morning. Speaking to Crazy on Tuesday afternoon he told The Bully the works had been completed, however the amount of rain that fell during most of the day was again too much for the drain, and The Anchorage was inundated once more. “The WTA told me they were unable to do any more to assist with the drainage issue, due to lack of capital expenditure funds, so I contacted Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, who will be attempting to fix the problem on Wednesday morning,” he said. A former WTA elected member, Crazy said he had, until now, rejected approaches by several people to run for the position of chairperson at the upcoming local elections but is seriously considering changing his mind. “I am sick to death of the cone of silence that pervades this town,” Crazy said. “How much longer can people remain silent? Something has to be done and I’m thinking seriously about becoming the voice for the people of this town.”

Rainwater rushes through the enclosed patio area at The Anchorage on Monday afternoon.

Town infrastructure services given a boost TWO major projects to improve Weipa town services have kicked off, with construction under way on stage two of the Golf Links Estate housing project and preliminary works started on the upgrade of the town’s water supply system. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa operations general manager Jo-Anne Scarini said both projects were being delivered as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to maintaining town services. “Work on both projects is now well under way and will continue throughout the year, Ms Scarini said. “The water supply upgrade is expected to be finished early next year, and we can expect significant improvements for our town. “Stage two of the Golf Links project involves developing the area next to the existing Golf Links estate, including stormwater drainage, sewerage reticulation and water reticulation. Golf Links stage two comprises 50 residential lots, a 14-property single

story complex and a separate multi-storey apartment block with five properties. It is anticipated the development works will be completed in about 10 months. Ms Scarini said the water supply system upgrade was aimed at ensuring the water systems throughout Weipa can handle current and future demand. “As a first step we collected data on the town’s water usage over a one month period. We are now using this data to determine the best engineering solution for our water and sewerage requirements, Ms Scarini said. “A tender has been issued to complete preliminary engineering work. We plan to have the upgrade completed by February 2013. Local firm Goodline will execute phase one of the Golf Links estate stage two project, which will be overseen by experienced Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa project and construction specialists. The tender for the water supply system has not been finalised.

Croc spoils fishing trip AN afternoon fish from the rocks at Hornibrook was put on hold by local fisherman Gregg Cairns recently when he was forced to share the popular spot with a three metre croc. “There was a kangaroo carcass on the bank and the croc must have spotted it and came in to investigate, Mr Cairns said. “I think the croc was aware that I was there and just kept swimming around and eyeing up the situation. “Eventually it must have decided I was not worth worrying about, and made a beeline for the shore and grabbed the roo. Mr Cairns grabbed a few photos (right), then left the croc to enjoy its meal, content to return to fish another day.

A NEW species of prehistoric crocodile dating to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 95 million years ago, has been discovered by a researcher at the University of Missouri in the USA. The extinct creature, nicknamed “Shieldcroc due to a thick-skinned shield on its head, is an ancestor of today’s crocodiles. The discovery was published last week in the journal PLoS-ONE (Public Library of

Science), and reported on the Indian Zeenews.com website. Its discovery provides scientists with additional information about the evolution of crocodiles and how scientists can gain insight into ways to protect the species’ environment and help prevent extinction. “Aegisuchus witmeri or ‘Shieldcroc’ is the earliest ancestor of our modern crocodiles to be found in Africa. Along with other discoveries, we are finding that crocodile ancestors are far more diverse than scien-

tists previously realised, said Casey Holliday, co-researcher and assistant professor of anatomy in the MU School of Medicine. Holliday identified Shieldcroc by studying a fossilized partial skull specimen, which was discovered in Morocco and held by the Royal Ontario Museum of Toronto for several years before Holliday analyzed it. By analyzing blood vessel scarring on the bone, Holliday determined that the crocodile would have had a structure on top of its head, resembling a shield. The dents and bumps on the bone indicate veins delivered blood to a circular mound of skin, something never before seen in a crocodile. He said the shield was likely used as a display structure to attract mates and intimidate enemies and possibly as a thermo-regulator to control the temperature of the animal’s head. Holliday compared Shieldcroc’s skull to those of other crocodilians. By comparing

slopes of various bones, he found that the new species had a flatter skull than other known species. With this information, he believes it is unlikely that Shieldcroc wrestled dinosaurs on or near the shoreline. Instead, Holliday said the fossil indicates that Shieldcroc had thin jaws, likely used to catch fish. “We believe Shieldcroc may have used its long face as a fish trap, said co-author Nick Gardner, an undergraduate researcher at Marshall University. “It is possible that it lay in wait until an unsuspecting fish swam in front of it. Then, if it was close enough, Shieldcroc simply opened its mouth and ate the fish without a struggle, eliminating the need for strong jaws, Gardner assumed. In addition, Holliday analysed Shieldcroc’’s skull and brain to estimate the overall size of the reptile. Using several parameters, Holliday and Gardner estimate that this specimen had a 5-foot long head and was 30 feet long.

Let’s keep the “Christmas in Christmas MY wife and I spent this Christmas just

past in Mareeba. We were able to visit the Uniting Church on the morning of December 25 there and attend the service to celebrate Christmas. During the service, the Minister shared a Christmas letter (reproduced below) which he had written. The thoughts which were expressed in the letter really resonated with me. Although the celebration of Christmas is now past, hopefully the work of Christmas will continue throughout the year. I do believe that as Australians, the wonderful cultural mix that we are, we would do well to heed the message of the letter and consider from where we have come, so as to be better able to focus on where we are going. I would be grateful if you could publish the letter, to share with my fellow Weipa and Western Cape residents. David Elliott “I notice that a number of people have left “Christmas out of Christmas. Instead the words “Happy holiday are replacing the more familiar “Merry Christmas. Maybe it’s a way of not offending those who do not hold to Christian beliefs, and it’s seen as a positive move for tolerance among different beliefs. However, how far do we take this “tolerance pretence? Do we refrain from calling a holiday in May

“Labor Day because that might offend those folk who vote Liberal? How does the title “Queen’s Birthday affect those with Republican views? Should we rename “Anzac Day because the name might offend Pacifists? If we really thought about it, these days represent a part of our heritage, irrespective of our beliefs. And the Christian tradition is part of that heritage. Real tolerance is not about becoming so concerned about offending people that we stand for nothing. Real tolerance is about holding strongly to that which we value, to the point of defending it vigorously, while respecting that there are differing views. Martin Luther King Day is celebrated in the USA. I wonder how people would feel if, instead of remembering Martin Luther King and what he achieved, the day was hijacked by some mythical person bringing peace and goodwill to all Americans. In the final analysis, a significant number of the world’s population worship Jesus Christ, who was the Word made flesh. Let us celebrate the birth of Jesus in a manner that proclaims the strength of God’s faith in humankind, rather than hide behind meaningless “Happy Holiday wishes. May you have a holy and happy Christmas. Russ Clark (Mareeba Uniting Church)

Western Cape Beat Lock your car or lose it

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

I have only been in Weipa for a month or so and one of the things I have noticed as a Police officer is that people in the town aren’t locking their cars or even removing the keys from their ignition. People seem to think that even though their neighbours are good people, and wouldn’t take their car for a bit of a joy ride, there are other people in this town who will take your car for a drive because they are too lazy to walk or don’t want to pay for a cab. If your car ever gets stolen just remember the phase “Drive it like you stole it”, because that’s what the criminals will do. Just consider yourself lucky if you get you car back in one piece.

Buckle-up or pay the fine

While on the topic of motor vehicles, everyone should remember to put their seat belt on properly. If you have your seat belt over your shoulder and it’s still not done up properly you will get a fine, or even have a terrible accident where you could become severely injured or become a fatality statistic. It surprises me to think that some drivers are quick to complain about getting a ticket for not wearing a seat belt around this town. I mean, is Weipa special? Gee, what happens if you’re caught in Cairns? We have boosted our patrols in an effort to get people to wear their seat belt. The fine is $300 and three de-merit points. So remember to buckle-up.

On a lighter note... We have a Senior Constable here who has been on a few weeks leave. During this time the station has absolutely filled up with this officer’s online compulsive shopping purchases. I mean floor, along wall, to ceiling has been absolutely filled up. Being Police officers we took the initiative to find out exactly what was concealed within the majority of these unmarked boxes e.g shoes, man perfumes, possible make-up box and man bags. We are just hoping that there is a good set of sheep clippers in one of the many boxes to trim that woolly sheep mop of a hairdo he is currently sporting. I am just not to sure if this new hairdo complies with the code of dress like the slip-on work boots, the shorts, that tattoo and pasty white legs?

WHEN you search for meaning to life and you are checking out the Lord Jesus, and if you are searching with all your heart, the Lord says that you will find him, and what he has to offer you. Let’s now read Mark Ch 10 vs 46-52 about blind Bartimaeus. Here we see the Lord leaving Jericho on his way to the fate that waits for him in Jerusalem, the destiny that we have come to know as God’s plan of Salvation, his Master Plan. In the Lord’s time there were many blind beggars waiting by the

roadside for food or money, and many of them would have heard about the Lord Jesus, and what they heard triggered off faith in their spirit (heart). When this beggar called out to the Lord, he used a special title that only the Jews understood the full meaning of, which showed that he believed that Jesus was the Messiah. He used the title, “Son of David” when calling out to Jesus, and so acknowledging that Jesus was a descendant of King David and heir to God’s promises as shown in Jeremiah Ch

33 vs 14-17. These promises were made hundreds and hundreds of years before by God who states in verse 17. “I, the Lord, promise that there will always be a descendant of David to be king of Israel…” No doubt though, this blind beggar would have expected an earthly kingdom in line with the major Jewish thoughts of the day about the roles of the Messiah. (For other titles for Jesus compare Matthew Ch 13 v 55-56 and Luke Ch 4 v 22). The Lord bless you. Rev Michael Connolly.

NEWS / OPINION From The Chair IT rained and it blew, and blew, and blew and a few trees tumbled down. Luckily, nobody was hurt but some fences, a shed and Crazy’s pool bore the brunt of the gusts. Annandi was blocked by a huge mahogany with residents unable to have access. WTA, RTA, Sodexo, SES and Carpenteria sprang into action and the clean-up began immediately. It was a great example of town, RTA, contractors and volunteers, working together, to make life bearable for Weipa residents. We d o h a v e o u r problems, which get exacerbated during the wet season. We a c k n o w l e d g e the state of some of the Courts on the eastern side of Rocky Point, which have potholes and water drainage problems. Staff attempt to band aid these problems. We cannot do a reseal as the curbing and channelling promised

in the RTA budget for the last three years, is going to occur eventually, though we do not know when. Originally, it would be almost finished by now but keeps getting pushed back. Don’t be afraid to complain to Town Office and RTA as the power of the people cannot be ignored. It is easy to get despondent when we see the money RTA pours into ventures such as South of the Embley. Towns which predominantly rely on mining in the coal basin, and the iron ore towns in Western Australia do very well financially, to

upgrade their infrastructure, from Rio Tinto. The love does not appear to stretch to our little town of Weipa. Yes, RTA is doing a $3,000,000 upgrade on the water this year, but this was supposed to be done in 2008! Whatever the outcome of the findings that State Government produce about the viability of the future governance of Weipa, there will always be an alliance between the town and RTA. We all have to live with that and co-exist peacefully. Whatever happens, Weipa is a fine place to call home.

SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... WHAT’S this I hear about introducing elephants, rhinos and komodo dragons to Cape York? Crikey! I have enough trouble keeping cane toads out of my food and water bowls without having to worry about being stepped on by an elephant when my mum takes me for a walk! Have you seen the size of the horns on those rhinos? Imagine surprising one of those in the bush when you’re on a camping trip! Speaking of cane toads, there seems to be an abundance of them at the moment with the warmer weather and all the rain. It’s very hard for a ďŹ ve-month puppy, such as myself, to resist chasing the pesky critters but by the way my mum and dad carry on when I do chase them I’m beginning to be a bit wary. Cane toad poisoning can have potentially fatal consequences for your pet so it’s best to leave them alone. When they get scared, the toads emit a milky, toxic secretion from glands behind their ears as a defence mechanism. The toxin (poison) is absorbed by a dog via the gums and eyes

and it works pretty quickly. Symptoms of toad poisoning can include drooling, foaming at the mouth, red gums, vomiting, heart rhythm abnormalities and convulsions...and that’s only if you lick them! If you are silly enough to eat them there will be the same signs but with more severe vomiting and diarrhoea. I hate to admit it, but I have been guilty of licking a couple of toads. Fortunately my mum and dad realised what I had done and washed out my mouth, and wiped my teeth and gums with a wet cloth to remove the poison. I was feeling a bit woozy, and it was pretty scary at the time but I’ve learned my lesson now. If your dog licks a toad don’t use a hose to wash out their mouth as they could breathe in the water and you would have even more problems on your hands. Prevention is always better than cure so pet owners should keep food and water bowls out of reach of cane toads and we dogs should do our best to resist chasing toads...besides, we may have elephants and rhinos to chase around in the future!

Inaugural tree planting morning this Saturday RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa is calling on residents to make a positive contribution to the local environment by planting a tree at their tree planting morning this Saturday, February 11. The tree planting morning is taking place at popular swimming area, Vyces Crossing. R i o Ti n t o A l c a n We i p a o p e r a t i o n s general manager JoAnne Scarini said she encouraged everyone to bring the family and help contribute to this beautiful area. “The tree planting morning at Vyces crossing will be easy, fun and is a small contribution for great environmental and community benefits, Ms Scarini said. “We are hoping to plant more than 400 native trees, including melaleucas, lophostemons and eucalypts. “It will help give our community a sense of pride knowing that we improved our local environment and we will

enjoy seeing the trees grow year upon year. The Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa tree planting morning starts from 9am. Vyces crossing is located about 27 kilometres from Weipa (turn off is along the Mapoon road). “We ask that people allow themselves plenty of time to drive to the tree planting morning as the road is unsealed and we have had a lot of wet weather, Ms Scarini said. “Remember your sun protection and bring plenty of water. Limited gloves and shovels will be available so bring your own if possible. A barbecue lunch will be available for all volunteers. For more information about the tree planting morning, contact Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community feedback hotline 1800 707 633 or email RTAWeipafeedback@riotinto.com

WCC NEW TEACHERS

A warm welcome to Weipa’s newest teachers THERE are more than 20 new teachers starting at the Western Cape College Weipa campus this year and over the next couple of weeks The Western Cape Bulletin will introduce them to the community.

Andrew Glen Andrew has lived in Brisbane for the last 12 years and has recently graduated from QUT. He is a HPE/ science teacher in his first year of teaching and will be a primary and middle school HPE teacher while at WCC. Andrew hopes to encourage students to make informed choices about their health and become lifelong participants in regular sporting activities. He says it could be a challenge getting used to not having access to a wide range of pastimes and hobbies that would otherwise be available in a metropolitan area. Andrew’s favourite subject at school was biology as he loved learning all about nature and the amazing variety of organisms on our planet. He also loved the excursions out into the field.

Jessica Dray Jessica has moved to Weipa from Proserpine and is a secondary-trained HPE teacher. She will be teaching PE in Prep to Year 7 and feels the biggest challenge teaching in a remote school will be making sure she becomes part of the community. Jessica’s favourtie subject at school was, and still is, PE.

Ashleigh Berry Ashleigh hails from Brisbane and is a recent graduate teacher who has had experience teaching through her involvement in music workshops for a variety of schools. Ashleigh is the WCC secondary music and instrumental music teacher and hopes to continue a strong instrumental music program, providing students with many chances to showcase their talent to the community. Living away from family will be her biggest challenge while in Weipa. Ashleigh’s favourite subject at school was music because of the the creativity she could express and the lifelong friends she has made through music.

Jess Hall EmmaJane Marshall Emma graduated from a Bachelor of Education with a major in Early Childhoold degree last year and WCC is her first teaching position. Emma’s husband and three children have joined her in Weipa from the Sunshine Coast. Emma has been assigned as a classroom teacher and will be teaching Year 1, where she hopes to create a positive, safe and supportive learning environment that embraces the individual, unique and diverse qualities that each child possesses. She also aims to create and foster relationships that are built on trust, respect and open communication, valuing all partners in the education process to maximise the opportunities of each child she teaches. Emma believes the biggest challenge she could face is being away from family and close friends, however she says it is comforting to know that there are so many fantastic members of the WCC community there to brighten times when they become tough. Her favourite subject at school was English because she loved having the opportunity to be creative with the various writing genres.

Page 14 Western Cape Bulletin February 8, 2012

Jess was born and grew up in Mount Isa, and has lived and taught a mixture of dance, drama, music, classroom, SOSE and coached netball and futsal teams from Prep to Year 10 in Brisbane for the last four years. Jess is teaching P - Year 7 dance and drama at WCC this year and a Cert III in performing arts in the senior school. Coming from a tight and very supportive family Jess says she will miss them a lot, and it will take time to adjust to not as much ‘space’ in a remote school and community. At school her favourite subjects were music and history and enjoyed discovering the different cultures and civilisations that came before ours.

Olivia Glen Olivia has come from Brisbane with her husband Andrew Glen who is one of the new WCC PE teachers. She is currently in her third year of teaching and her previous school was Strathpine West State School. Olivia is the new Year 6 teacher and she hopes to inspire each student to step outside their comfort zone and give everything their best. Working with and familiaring herself with so many different cultural backgrounds is something Olivia sees as exciting, rather than a challenge. Olivia’s favourite subject at school was English because she is a huge book nerd and enjoyed getting graded for something she loved to do!

NATURE

Dainty Western Cape visitors flutter by Dainty Swallowtail butterflies may be out and about in the Western Cape right now. These butterflies are common visitors to gardens in their range during warm weather, right up until May each year. Backyard Buddies wants you to know that it’s easy to be a buddy to these stunning butterflies with a few simple tips. “The easiest way to attract Dainty Swallowtail butterflies is with citrus plants,” said MrSteve Corbett, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “These butterflies, also known as Dingy Swallowtails or Small Citrus Butterflies, absolutely love citrus including non-natives such as the humble lemon or orange tree.” “With their black wings spotted with white, orange and pale blue, Swallowtails are gorgeous garden visitors. You can encourage them to stay around your garden by also providing nectar bearing plants and flowers for them to feed on. Butterflies love purple, orange, yellow and red coloured flowers that that are shallow enough for them to easily reach the nectar inside,” Mr Corbett said. “You can also make a good home for butterflies by putting out flat rocks for them to sun themselves on and court each other, and by creating some muddy puddles or moist sand for them to get essential salts from.” “Butterflies are a beautiful sight but they are also great to have in your garden as they attract birds which help control insect numbers. Butterflies are also often an indicator that the local environment is healthy.” Tips to encourage Swallowtails to your backyard • If you want to see butterflies around, you’ll need to see caterpillars first. Avoid removing caterpillars from your garden if possible. Butterfly caterpillars don’t often cause any obvious damage to plants, except for the introduced Cabbage White Butterfly.

• Native plants that attract Swallowtails and feed their caterpillars include Native Finger Lime (Citrus australiasica), Native Lime (Citrus garrawayae), and Desert Lime (Citrus glauca). • Avoid using any insecticides, pesticides, herbicides or chemicalson your plants. Many insects can be removed by hand or with water, or by other buddies such as insects, birds and lizards already in your garden. • Butterflies can also get nutrients from the odd bit of rotten fruit, so next time you find something rotten in your fruit bowl, don’t bin it – put it out in the garden or on a tree branch. “Dainty Swallowtails lay their eggs on the new growth of citrus plants. Dainty Swallowtail caterpillars are black with orange and white spots and black spines. This caterpillar looks like a tough character—and it can look after itself if bothered by predators. It extends a brightly coloured forked organ from behind its head called an ‘osmeterium’, and it sprays strong smelling citrus chemicals at the attacker to drive it away,” said Mr Corbett. “The bright colours of the caterpillar and butterfly warn predators that they may be toxic to eat, but they are not harmful to humans at all. Once the caterpillar is ready, it suddenly turns green with orange-yellow spots. Next it creates a greeny-brown pupa which looks like a broken stick. It hangs off a citrus branch, camouflaged as part of the plant.” “If you spot a pupa, keep an eye on it. It takes 10 to 14 days for the butterfly to emerge during summer. During autumn it may take four weeks to emerge. The Dainty Swallowtail usually emerges under the cloak of deep night,” Mr Corbett said.

• The female Dainty Swallowtail is larger than the male – her wingspan can grow to more than 7cm in size, whereas his is about half a centimetre smaller. • Male Dainty Swallowtails establish territories, and fiercely defend them against other males. • The Dainty Swallowtail is one of only four Swallowtails found in Australia. • The Dainty Swallowtail is the smallest Swallowtail butterfly in Australia. • Dainty Swallowtails used to only be found in Queensland and northern New South Wales. Their range has extended southward following commercial citrus plantings. • The Dainty Swallowtail only became a common sight in Melbourne gardens in the 1970s. • If the weather is too cold, some pupas may stay dormant over the winter and the butterflies may not emerge until spring.

CROSSWORD No. 84

SUDOKU No. 84

Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) At times it may seem as though your family is taking up too much of your emotional energy. Make sure that you think about your own needs as well. Romance. Your positive mood will rub off on your partner. This will be a good period for coming to terms with your differences and enjoying those things which you have in common.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Your relationship with your boss may be a little difficult at times this month. Work hard, but don’t let yourself get dragged into an argument which you cannot win. Romance. A letter from a friend who lives a long way away will cheer you up. This person has been dreaming about you recently.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

You may be more conscientious than you really need to be at the moment. Don’t let your colleagues push you into doing work which is not really your responsibility. Romance. A powerful aspect to Venus will help to create a surge of romantic energy between you and your partner. This should be a good time for both of you.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A meeting with friends later in the month will put you in touch with somebody who is going to have a strong influence over your life over the next few weeks. Romance. An acquaintance from work may be a little more inquisitive than you would like. You will have to find a subtle way to deal with their questions.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You might actually be in better financial shape than you realise: you have forgotten about a sum of money which you have hidden in the house. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will help you to attract the right person. Be careful that you don’t rush in too quickly, however, or you will put them off just as fast!

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A plan to save money could create more problems than it solves. You will need to find a better way to balance your needs and your resources. Don’t listen to a friend whose advice has been unhelpful in the past. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. You might not realise how much they value your support.

FINDWORD No. 84

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

A recent change in your circumstances might be difficult to deal with at first. You may have to leave some old ideas behind and move on. Romance. A difficult aspect to Mars this week could make you a little on-edge at times. Do your best to avoid getting into areas which have caused tension in the past. This is not the best time to deal with delicate issues.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A person whom you have not seen for many years will suddenly come to mind. An event which this person predicted will soon come true. Romance. You will be in rather an excitable state this week. You may find yourself spending time with someone that you would normally find a little too strange for your tastes!

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A favourable aspect to Jupiter will give your self-confidence a boost. This will be an excellent time for starting a new project, or for injecting new life into an old one. Romance. This will be a good time for romance: however, your partner may find your changing moods confusing at times. Do your best to be more consistent.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) You may need to reduce your spending in order to stay in financial balance. A recent splurge was more than you could afford, and could create problems later in the month. Romance. Try not to judge the situation until you are certain that you have all the information. You are actually in a much better position than you realise.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.

– Oprah Winfrey

SOLUTIONS No. 84

You may find it a little heavy-going at times. However, your determination will be enough to see you through. A meeting later in the week will go especially well. Romance. Your strong emotions throughout this week will give you the energy that you need to find what you are looking for. Be careful not to miss the obvious, however.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t be too concerned about what other people think of you. You know that what you are doing is right and don’t need their approval to continue. Romance. An innocent secret about your personal life will shortly be revealed. No harm will be done, as long as you don’t take it too seriously.

Let the season begin THERE are only four weeks until round one and I am so excited. Wow, I think we watched a great game of footy on the weekend between the NRL All Stars and the Indigenous All Stars. The game had everything from speed and power to passion and emotion, with some great skill shown. How good was the Matty Bowen try? Cowboys fans must be excited with Thurston and Bowen showing great form. I must mention that both teams visited several schools and communities throughout Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland and it’s a credit to the players giving up their time to put back into the game. There was a group of people from Weipa at the game and they have told me

it was a awesome experience. I certainly hope I’m there next year. The weekend also saw the start of the NRL trials, with several teams giving their young guns an opportunity to impress. The Bulldogs were big winners over the Dragons, while Todd Carney inspired the Sharks to a big win over Manly. The young Broncos showed they can win without Darren Lockyer by overcoming a very determined Cowboys team. Across the Tasman the N e w Z e a l a n d Wa r r i o r s showed they will be firing come round one with a convincing victory over the Gold Coast Titans. On Saturday we had our junior sign-on down at the footy oval and it was a great success. The juniors will

commence training Tuesday, February 21 from 4pm at the Weipa footy oval. I must thank the parents who assisted me with sign-on your help was greatly appreciated. Finally, I will leave a message for my mate Dallas who supports the AFL side Gold Coast Suns...they are telling me wooden spoons are cheap in the glitter strip as I think the Titans could also go back-to-back wooden spooners. Footy fans out there please don’t forget to send your great footy pictures into the Western Cape Bulletin or to myself as I have some great prizes to give away. The supporter of the week is Seamus King-Smith with this photo of a sensational tackle. He will go into the draw for the supporter of the month, who will win a great rugby league pack.

Marathon champion Rob de Castella with 2011 IMP participant Bianca Graham. Rob is hoping to find Indigenous runners from the Cape to take part in the 2012 project.

AUSTRALIAN marathon champion Robert de Castella is on the hunt for young indigenous men and women who would like a free trip to New York – all they have to do is run a marathon. The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP)is seeking outstanding Indigenous men and women aged between 18 and 30, that have the commitment and ability to train for the New York City Marathon. The marathon is one of the toughest and biggest running events in the world, with 48,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators. Those selected for the project will be coached and supervised by Rob de Castella, be required to attend a number of training camps around Australia during the year, and undertake a special Certificate III in Community Recreation – Indigenous Health. Applicants should be willing to inspire other Inidgenous men and women, and have an interest in wanting to make a difference by promoting a healthy lifestyle. Weipa marathon runner, Bianca Graham, participated in the IMP in 2011 and is hoping someone else from the region will grab the opportunity to become involved. “The IMP’s aim is to have an Indig-

enous long-distance runner represent Australia in the 2016 Olympics and it would be fantastic if that person was from the Western Cape,” Bianca said. Bianca’s involvement in the project last year took her all over Australia to participate in training camps and running events but she says the IMP gave her much more than fitness. “The Indigenous Marathon Project has taught me that it is my own efforts that will allow me to reach my achievements. “I’ve completed a marathon, and not just any marathon, but the biggest one in the world, and I only got there because of the support and opportunities offered to me through Rob’s project.” “I was so proud of my achievement because I wanted to show my community that isolation is no barrier,” Bianca said. “I encourage our Indigenous youth to take up this opportunity. Don’t be frightened by the distance – just take up the opportunity and have fun. IMP 2012 runner applications are now being accepted, with tryouts occuring in February and March 2012. You can complete an application form online at www.themarathonproject. com.au or phone 02 6260 5750 for more information.

Grunter are about in good numbers with Gonbung, Evans Landing, Hornibrook and the Mission River bridge being some of the more popular areas. Local Prawn is your best bait if you can get some, and there are a few about, or get some frozen bait if in a hurry. Most Grunter are still in Roe so limit your catch to give them a chance to spawn. A timely reminder to everyone there is another croc in Trunding Creek so be very aware if venturing in that vicinity. And no it’s not the same Croc that caused the problem last year. That one is on holidays in a croc farm. There is also a big four-metre specimen haunting the Mission River bridge, so stay away from the water’s edge and stay safe. On a lighter note Dave Kay, who appeared in last week’s Bully, had a funny or frustrating day, depending how you look at it, ďŹ shing off the beach at Gonbung. Every time he cast out a bait one of the small Terns would swoop down and steal his bait before it hit the water. He put up with them for about an hour before he had had enough and home was the decision. Hope you all have a great week and we will catch up again next week for some more tips.

Determined Hashers avoid the puddles Outhouse and Booboo spent their time waiting for the running group by racing their stick-boats down the side waters. The runners ďŹ nally arrived and, after a short regroup, headed down through the mighty waters back into the bush again and rejoined the rest up the road, where we followed the road carefully, making sure we stayed away from puddles if Quassie and Ginger Root were about. Yes, Ginger Root was back and brought a friend, Stephen, who joined in the fun, even taking a turn at pram pushing. We enjoyed a couple coldies. We wish

ANOTHER windy week saw the fishing suffer, but with the Barra season opening last Wednesday plenty of anglers were braving the wind and rain to bag their first one for the season. I have heard that there were a few caught but proof is in the pudding. Where are the photos guys and gals - I am only a email away. There are a few new lures you might want to take a look at. One is the Transam soft plastic which is just about indestructible, except losing one to a Rock Cod or a Timber Bream, with fish like Barra, Jacks and Fingermark not making a dent in them. Another is a new colour in the Reidy’s B52 range called the Red Faced Olive Back, and the third new lure is the XXXX Gold Classic F18 or 97. These are all working well on the Barra. Threadfin Salmon should be close inshore after all this rain as a feed is a bit harder to ďŹ nd in all the murky water. Try small silver lures like Wonder Wobblers and wind fairly quickly, as they won’t go for a lure if it’s too easy a prey. They can also be caught on poppers or sliders and I have been told blue and white lures are supposed to work quite well. As most anglers know the

Let the dirt fly in 2012 WELCOME all to the first instalment from the Weipa Dirt Kart Club for 2012. With the dust settled on 2011, I usually get very excited this time of year. I haven’t quite worked out why yet, but something is definitely different this year. Could it be the 2012 Doomsday prediction? I don’t think so. Maybe it’s the thought of me winning Australia’s Got Talent? It’s not impossible. No, it’s because there are only three months until the 2012 Weipa dirt kart season starts again. The excitement, the adrenalin, the dirt and the smell of two-stroke fuel in the air - who could ask for any more? Well, the Weipa Dirt Kart Club is about to deliver a year of dirt kart racing like never before. Recently I interviewed club president Ben West about the year ahead and his response was like locking a kid in a lolly shop, you can’t take the smile of his face. The Weipa Dirt Kart Club will this year be conducting 14 race meetings in total and will commence their official race season on the April 28, with round one of the first of three race series in both junior and senior classes. Each series will be held over three race nights with a winner at the end of each of the three rounds. And in the words of club president Ben West, “the jewel in the crown for the year will be a two-day blue ribbon event to be held in July. “This will no doubt include

visiting interstate drivers up against the best that Weipa can offer and all looking to be the inaugural 2012 Weipa Anniversary Classic winner. Ben also explained that the Weipa Dirt Kart Club will be the first club in Australia to run a state-of-the-art lap scoring and timing system this year, and with all the equipment purchased, it will be ready to be installed in the next few weeks. This is exciting stuff for a club of this size and can only assist in cementing their future and perception in the community. Weipa Dirt Karts is one of the true family sports still around that actually won’t put a major whole in your back

pocket. Entry karts are available from as low as $1500, running costs are also extremely cheap and the time required preparing the karts is only a few hours every couple of weeks. It provides the serious racer with an opportunity to boost their egos and show off and also provides the family that’s looking for some adrenalinpumping action (apart from Twister) something that they can all do together. So kids, throw away the PlayStations and X-boxes, ask mum and dad to buy you a dirt kart, damn it mum and dad, even buy one for yourselves, and start living the dream like myself and many others in the Weipa Dirt Kart Club do... the

motorsport dream. Stay tuned race fans, the lights will shine brightest at the Weipa raceway this year and if you want to be involved in the revolution that is dirt karting, the club will be conducting sign-on days and a few working bees prior to the season, the first to be held on February 18. Come on down and have a chat to some of the people already involved, as we are always looking for new racers and some helpers. For further information on dirt karting in Weipa, contact either Ben West on 0408 166 684 or Troy Batterham on 0413 119 738. You know you want to... – Derek Mowles
