Scherger jobs boost By Corey Bousen

A mini jobs-boom is on the horizon for Weipa with the Scherger Immigration Detention Centre to at least triple its number of local employees with more than 20 new jobs to be on offer “in coming months”, according to an immigration department spokesman. Members of the Weipa community have been curious about the fate of Scherger following the reinstatement of the so-called Paciﬁc Solution, which allows for the off-shore processing of asylum claims in Nauru and Papua New Guinea, but a recent surge in boat arrivals means the demand for Scherger’s services is as strong as it has ever been. The detention centre, which is located at the Scherger RAAF Base 30 km east of Weipa, has a capacity to accommodate 598 asylum seekers at any one time, with 477 “clients” housed at Scherger as at 11 October, a Department of Immigration and Citizenship spokesman told the Western Cape Bulletin. Scherger currently employs less than 10 locals from the Western Cape region, but this number is set to at least triple with more than 20 new jobs to become available to locals “in the coming months”. More than half of the new jobs will likely be for “Client Service Ofﬁcers”, whose job is to work on a daily basis with detainees. The current plan is for Scherger to operate as a detention centre until the end of June 2014, but no decision has yet been made as to whether this date could either be brought forward or extended. “The minister has announced Scherger will stay open until the end of June 2014 and in the absence

of any further announcements by the government, then this date stands,” the spokesman said. “If the boats slow down, then this will affect the operation of all the detention centres around Australia.” There are no current plans to expand the capacity of Scherger, the spokesman said. Asylum-seekers who arrive in Australia by boat usually arrive at Scherger on chartered aircraft from Darwin, after being processed at Christmas Island. The average stay for asylum-seekers at Scherger is four months, after which time they are usually moved into the Australian community under community detention arrangements or granted bridging or protections visas by the Australian government. The United Nations last week raised concerns about an alarming back-log of asylum seekers in detention centres as processing of their claims has stopped since the Paciﬁc Solution has been reinstated and almost none of the new arrivals have been transferred to Nauru or PNG, which is largely not ready to receive them, The Australian newspaper reported on Friday. The United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, said there is a backlog of 3,500 asylum-seekers in Australian refugees centres, following a surge of 4,016 asylum-seekers who have arrived by boat since August 14, of which only 211 have been sent to be processed off-shore. “We have a growing concern about the suspension of the processing for the 3,500 people who are still in Australia,” UNHCR regional representative in Australia, Ric Towle, told The Australian. There are currently a total of 9,422 people in some form of immigration detention in Australia.

The Weipa Liquor Accord has introduced a new initiative requiring non-Weipa residents to fill out a “Restricted Area Register” detailing the final destination for takeaway alcohol purchases. The new requirement, which came into effect last Wednesday (10 October), may upset a couple of customers who won’t be happy with the prospect of filling out paperwork, but Licensees from the Weipa Liquor Accord outlets say the new requirement is a positive initiative aimed at minimising harm in the community. “Wherever you go in Weipa to purchase takeaway alcohol you will be asked for ID, If you do not have a local Weipa address on your ID, then you will have to fill out the ‘Restricted Area Register’ and state what is the final destination for the take-away alcohol,” explained Nick Prus, Weipa Bowls Club General Manager. • Information required for the register includes: • date and time of purchase • Name & address, including suburb • Goods purchased • Motor vehicle registration number • ID Type or Member Number • Customer’s Signature • Destination for alcohol  continued page 2

Participants in the Weipa Liquor Accord are local stakeholders in the hospitality industry and includes representatives for nearly all local venues that are licensed to serve alcohol over the bar and / or sell take-away alcohol. Queensland Police, Datsima, and the Queensland Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation are also supporters of the Accord and all parties work together to develop strategies to reduce alcohol-related problems in the community. In a statement prepared for the Western Cape Bulletin, the Liquor Accord said: “If all stakeholders in the accord (the police, liquor licencing and community groups) are committed, then all providers of alcohol need to be part of these accord terms, including the major retailers. “We (the licensees) are happy to get the ball rolling. The purpose of the Restricted Area Register is to ensure take-away alcohol is not being taken to areas such as Napranum, that have a complete ban on alcohol, or that carriage limits are not exceed to other places like Mapoon, where alcohol is allowed but in restricted quantities and types. “Our objective with the Weipa Liquor Accord is to minimise harm and to support the local community,” Albatross Bay Resort Manager Jayne Broadbent said. Ms Broadbent said Weipa residents, who have previously shown their ID and are known to the staff member on duty, will not be asked again for ID or have to fill out the paperwork. If they are unknown to the staff member they will be asked for ID, but not required to complete the paperwork if they have a Weipa Address on their ID. Previous requirements for people buying bulk quantities of alcohol to fill out a ‘Bulk Sales Register’ will remain with both registers combined into the one document.Weipa residents will only have to complete the paperwork if they require to exceed the daily sales limit of alcohol.

Community carers shocked as they endure fourth break-in in as many years By Corey Bousen

The bulletin board crammed full of certificates of appreciation is clear testimony as to how much the people at the Weipa Community Care Association do for the people of the Western Cape. They are the giving heart and soul of the community yet heartless criminals think they are soft targets, breaking into the WCCA four times in the past four years. Truly hurt by the latest criminal act, CEO Tamara Freeman told the Western Cape Bulletin how saddened she was for the WCCA to be one of the victims of the break and enter rampage that happened on the evening of 8 October. A total of six premises were either robbed or vandalised on the night, including: Cape Cafe, the pharmacy, The Heritage Resort, the kindergarten and Tropicanos. (See “Shopping centre thieves caught on camera” p7, 10 October edition of Western Cape Bulletin). “It makes you feel sad. This is a charity and for someone to do something like this; it’s taking the heart out of the community and taking from the people we’re trying to help,” she said. Besides trashing the WCCA’s Hibberd Centre premises, the thieves stole $50 worth of donations in a charity tin. “That $50 is enough for a food package for us to give to someone in their time of need. “Somewhere along the line the people committing these crimes have got to develop some sort of emotional attachment to the place they call home,” Ms Freeman lamented. The biggest hit came from losing an entire day of trading on 9 October, while staff had to toil cleaning up the centre rather than spending their time helping community members. “It’s not like they took a lot. They took some chocolate milk out of the fridge and they ripped the cupboard door off in the op-shop and then pulled all of the stuff out of the ﬁling cabinet. “They just trashed things for no real purpose; it’s just senseless,” Ms Freeman said. The WCCA is responsible for a broad range of community services including: Weipa North West Cape Healing Service, Western Cape Women’s Crisis Shelter, Western Cape No Interest Loan Scheme, the Weipa Family Day-care and the provision of crisis food parcels for people in need. “This is a place where people come when they are hurt the most; when they’ve got emotional needs that are unmet; when they can’t pay their bills,” Ms Freeman said. For the centre to be the target of thieves four time in four years, “just doesn’t make any sense,” she concluded.

State gov’t withdraws from World Heritage negotiations

The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) Chairman Peter McCulkin has fully endorsed the actions by the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell when he announced last week that the State Government will cease its involvement in negotiations surrounding World Heritage nomination for Cape York. “Thankfully following a preliminary meeting with his closest and most senior staff last Tuesday [9 October] in Brisbane where we raised several issues of grave concern, the Minister met with us the following day and gave us the undertaking that all remaining funding for Indigenous consultation on the Cape would be returned to the Feds,” Mr McCulkin said. The Minister further indicated that the State did not support the current consultation nor the time frames set by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke. “The consultation being undertaken by non-elected non-representative Indigenous groups based outside the region is no longer acceptable to the elected leaders from across the Cape,” Mr McCulkin added. The Australian newspaper reported last week that it had obtained a document showing the Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation will be responsible for Stage 1 World Heritage nomination consultation. “It is clear that Minister Burke has started this process to finalise World Heritage consultation by November and nomination by February 2013 to again use Cape York as a ‘bargaining chip’ in a Federal Election in the early part of next year. He has to be sadly mistaken if he thinks the people of Cape York are going to sit idly by and allow that to happen,” Mr McCulkin concluded. The WTA has recently made a point of bullishly countering the Wilderness Society push for World Heritage, citing the future of Weipa and its four thousand residents is dependent on the South of the Embley project. Mr McCulkin was also able to gain a one hundred per-cent commitment to the South of Embley project from Minister Powell during his meeting last week. The WTA will now be focusing on a meeting with the Federal Minister for Environment Tony Burke in the near future.

The cost of land for the second stage of Golf Links Estate is likely to be around the $150 per square metre mark, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General Manager Operations, Jo-Anne Scarini, said at last week’s community forum. Ms Scarini said a final decision on the pricing has yet to be made although it will be similar to that of the first stage, with the sale price of the land determined on a cost recovery basis. “We sell the land for the cost of the development based on constructions costs from the project management office,” she told the 30 community members that attended last week’s meeting. The indicated price of $150 per square metre means a 1,000 square metre block will cost in the vicinity of $150,000. RTA Weipa Town Manager Ben Laidlaw said 90 percent of the initial infrastructure work on Golf Links Estate Stage Two was complete and said it was inevitable that some “noise and dust” problems would arise during earthmoving and infrastructure work. “We plan to mitigate and minimise those impacts at the early stages of the project,” he said. A ballot for the sale of the land is currently being designed, with the ballot process to be “fairly similar” to stage one. Expectations are that the ballot for the sale of the 69 residential, multi-units and multi-storey lots will be held in 2013 “as early as we possibly can”, Ms Scarini said. One area for possible difference between stage one and stage two of Golf Links Estate is that a ‘Community Management Scheme’ may not be implemented for stage two. “People ask a lot of questions about the Community Management Scheme. We’re going to try not to have a CMS [for Stage Two] as it has proven to be quite a significant impediment to people purchasing land within Golf Links Estate stage one,” Ms Scarini said. “The intent of the CMS was to protect peoples’ investments with the maintenance of certain standards but the Weipa Town Authority believes that they can achieve a good outcome for stage two without having a CMS in place,” she said.

“This will be a change from Golf Links stage one.” The installation of water infrastructure was also discussed at the meeting, with water pressure around town to be substantially improved once booster pumps are installed at the town water tower by the end of next year. “At the end of work in 2013, the town water pressure will be fine. We will have the pressure that we need,” Ms Scarini said. The installation of new infrastructure will result in the water supply being cut to some residences, Mr Laidlaw said, although this will be done at times to minimise inconvenience, such as between 10pm and 4am. Mr Laidlaw said water usage by residents in Weipa is very high at “more than double” comparable communities, with the Weipa Town Authority looking at initiatives around water conservation and education. Water levels at the town dams “have largely been maintained” during the dry season, Mr Laidlaw said, with some additional bores to be drilled in town “over the next couple of weeks”. Funding for the WTA was also discussed, with the amount of funding to be allocated in the near future. “The Weipa Town Authority have submitted their five-year capital plan which includes a request for funding, prioritising these issues. The available funds will be allocated in the coming weeks after capital approval has been received.” Mr Laidlaw said. The issue of curbing, channelling and drainage for Rocky Point residents was also raised at the meeting, with a petition on the issue presented to Mr Laidlaw. The Town Manager said the regular community meetings are an important way for RTA to engage with the public. “Last week’s forum provided the ideal opportunity for us to talk with the community about those major infrastructure works under way for 2012,” he said. “Through the forum we were able to hear first-hand about those matters that are of current concern to the community. “Attendees asked questions about the South of Embley project and the forum provided the opportunity to explain where the Environmental Impact Statement was up to in the State and Commonwealth Government approval processes.”

The Bureau of Meteorology issued its tropical cyclone seasonal outlook on Monday, reminding communities in Australia’s northern coastal regions to prepare now for the coming wet season. Bureau of Meteorology Climate Prediction Manager, Dr Andrew Watkins, said advances in the science of climate prediction allow us to accurately gauge the likelihood of above or below average tropical cyclone activity, and better inform severe weather planning. “The overall outlook is for a return to near average, or slightly below average, tropical cyclone activity, but this does not mean we can afford to be complacent about the risks,” said Dr Watkins. “The tropical cyclone outlook uses key climate indicators to look at what the coming season may bring. Currently the climate is in neutral territory, meaning neither La Niña or El Niño conditions are present. Typically La Niña events are associated with more tropical cyclone activity, and El Niño with less,” said Dr Watkins. Queensland Regional Director, Rob Webb, said that with the cyclone season rapidly approaching, taking a few simple steps to prepare now can make a world of difference. “The average number of cyclones sits around four in the Queensland region and although they don’t all cross the coast, even the risk of a single cyclone or flood makes the preparation worthwhile,” said Mr Webb. “When it comes to flooding, Queensland has seen widespread activity in recent years, and while we don’t expect the same extent of flooding this year, we can expect typical periodic flooding in parts of the state. “Summer is a great time of year and we all look forward to it. Tropical cyclones and floods are part of the climate that comes with the warm, tropical Queensland weather. Enjoy the sunshine, but stay tuned for what the weather might bring, particularly when you’re on holidays and in unfamiliar territory,” said Mr Webb. Emergency Management Queensland Assistant Director-General Bruce Grady said the release of the tropical cyclone outlook was a prime time for Queenslanders to ensure they were prepared. “When disaster strikes, communities can be isolated, power can be cut and damaged roads and debris can prevent emergency services from reaching you. It is vital people ensure their emergency plans and emergency kits are up to date, their homes are prepared and they know how they can seek valuable information if required,” said Mr Grady. Queensland’s Commissioner for Mine Safety and Health has warned mining operations they must improve their safety performance as the industry continues to grow. In his annual report tabled in State Parliament last week, Commissioner Stewart Bell said the number and frequency of injuries to mining industry workers had increased significantly over the past 12 months to 30 June 2012. “Queensland is recognised as having one of the safest mining industries in the world,” he said. “However, I am concerned that one of the major safety parameters we measure - the lost time injury frequency rate - is on the rise; particularly in underground coal mines. “For example, the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) across all sectors increased from 3.4 injuries /diseases per million hours worked in 2010-11 to 3.9 per million hours worked in 2011-12. “This was a particular issue in underground coal mines where the LTIFR jumped from 4.2 in 2010-11 to 6.8 in 2011-12. “This is a large increase and a cause for concern. “Similarly, the number of lost time injuries and disabling injuries across all sectors increased from 851 in 2010-11 to 1047 during the 12 months to 30 June 2012,” he said. Mr Bell said there was one fatality in Queensland’s mining industry during 2011-12 compared to three fatalities the previous financial year. One positive area to note was the increase in the number of High Potential Incidents (HPI) reported by industry to government mines inspectors. There were 2370 HPIs reported during 2011-12 compared to 1960 incidents reported the previous

financial year. “High Potential Incidents are events where worker safety could have been potentially at risk and does not mean any person was injured as a result. “The fact HPI numbers are increasing is encouraging. It reflects better reporting by operators and ensures all incidents are thoroughly investigated to help prevent future injury or fatalities,” he said. Mr Bell said it was vital the Queensland mining industry improved its safety performance and training as the industry continues to expand. “Expansion means greater numbers of untrained personnel are entering the mining workforce,” Mr Bell said. “This influx of novice miners can create risks for the new miners themselves, and the people they work with, unless they undergo proper training in mine initiation and safety procedures. “Mining does not have to be a dangerous business providing miners follow the processes and procedures that have been designed to get them home safe and healthy to their families every day,” he said. Queensland Government Mines Inspectorate staff conducted 1573 inspections of mine sites and 56 audits during 2011-12. They also conducted 191 investigations of mine accidents and incidents, issued 375 directives and 1444 substandard condition or practice notices to mines. How do we exercise faith (trust) if we already have all the details of the future in our hands? Hebrews Ch 11 vs 1-2 says, “To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of

the things we cannot see. It was by their faith that people of ancient times won God’s approval.” The Lord expects us to keep an eye on our own self and each other to make sure that we are not slipping away from the faith, and to continue giving out the gospel. We are to keep an eye on world events as the prophecies of the Bible unfold before our eyes, because it gives us encouragement, as we sense the time is getting near. (These are all bal-

anced out in the normal way of life, among our work and leisure time). And we must never give up, never allow “the kerosene in our lantern to run out”, or to put it another way, “never let our battery run flat to the point where it refuses to be recharged”. Economic diversification is a key priority for Weipa and Cape York Peninsula Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Inc (RDA FNQ&TS) is pleased to hear that dialogue is happening between Weipa Town Authority, RTA and Minister David Crisafulli regarding the long-term sustainability of the Weipa Township. High protein diets have been around for a very long time. They are advertised to us in various forms, from Atkins, to Dukan, to South beach diets… I am sure you heard it all before. Often I get approached by people asking me about a high protein diet, if this is the way to lose weight or if it is even dangerous. In general a high protein diet works for fast weight loss and is not dangerous for your health if you follow a balanced lifestyle and drink enough water. The water is necessary as your body need to break down the extra protein in your body and eliminate it. These diets are designed to be short time with fast results and usually go through different stages to Kickstart you metabolism again. They work for most people if you can stick to portion sizes and don’t cheat. This one - as most diets do work, if you can maintain them. If you have problems with high cholesterol or suffer from any other cardiovascular disease you may want to practice cautions with these diets and talk to your doctor before or a nutritionist before commencing them. There are millions of food plans out there. If you are looking for the right food plan for you follow a diet that is healthy, is designed to get your metabolism kick started and follows you through certain phases and educates and encourages you to have a long term balanced eating habits. I am not one that is advocating diets or even eating much animal products for many reasons so therefore I cannot and would not suggest a high protein diet for you at all. I find it quite difficult to stick to a very strict diet, like the Atkins diet and actually feel that this is not the healthiest

low Carbohydrate diet either as it is really high in unhealthy fats and not balanced out with nutrients and vitamins which are essential to your body. But if you decide you would like to experience quick results in weight loss and you can deal with the carbohydrate craving that your body may experience then go for it. In regards to your health make sure that the diet you choose: • Incorporates protein from sourced from fish, lean (organic meats), and organic free range eggs and legumes or dairy products that are in most natural state like Greek yoghurt and milk, • eliminates most if not all processed foods, • includes non starchy, low carb vegetables like green leafy vegetable, broccoli, asparagus, spinach etc., • encourages drinking enough water to transport excess protein out of your body, • eat frequently and small portions, • That it goes to different stages which will educates you and helps you to come out of the diet without gaining all the lost weight back. Stabilisation phases are the most important part of a diet to keep the weight off. In order for any high protein diet to work the intake of your carbohydrates will need to be reduced. So no cheating on coffee with sugar, a mars bar, or a ice coffee from the servo, etc. You may eat heaps of Paw Paw during a high protein diet as it helps breaking down protein and has hardly any calories. Russian twins bring wood-castle to the Cape; crew with cash welcome By MARK ROY

IT’S not every day that you see what looks like an ancient Viking ship, flying under the outlaw flag of a Russian motorcycle club, moored at the Seisia beach, at the tip of Cape York. But it’s not every day that you come across sailors like Russian twins Sergey and Alexander Sinelnik, either. The vessel is the Rusich, which the brothers - who built the boat themselves - solemnly describe as “an old Slavic wood-castle”. I first met this pair of professional adventurers five years ago in Carnarvon, with my good friend and Russian translator Kirill Evgenevich Ivoutin, as they set out on the second of two ill-fated attempts to row across the Indian Ocean to Tanzania in what looked like a floating yellow submarine. On that trip they had to be rescued by the RAAF, but sometimes their oddball adventures do go roughly according to plan. Each year, it seems, these fierce Russian patriots embark on a random, ill-advised and ludicrous expedition to cover some part of the globe by one improbable means or another. They have already crossed the Caspian Sea in their 15-metre Slavic “wood-castle” wearing heavy suits of armour. And dispatched the deserts of the Middle East on giant three-wheeled motorcycles. And circumnavigated the globe on Urals, a sort of heavy, old, Russian version of the Harley Davidson. In November 2011, after leaving the shores of the Black Sea on the Rusich, they sailed their wooden monument to Russian ancestry, the Rusich, into the port of Darwin, where it was made ready for their clockwise circumnavigation of Australia, which began in August 2012. Now they are ready to begin the second leg of their 3000-nautical mile journey to Sydney. But it seems the two adventurers need some cashedup travelling companions to help them along their way. “OFFICIAL INVITATION of ALL PEOPLE of EARTH,” the twins state in a recent, desperatesounding email to a Cossack motorcycling website. “We don’t have not enough 10+ participants who could pass with us and bring the monetary contribution to expedition, I search everywhere. “The request to you, you could place the invitation about participation on a castle of Russich on the Internet or still somewhere?” On their own website (www.sinelniki.ru), the twins say they plan to explore the rivers along the Cape on their southward journey. “The beautiful idea to alternate sea transitions by the rivers and channels is realised, this idea is extremely good contrasts, rest after sea elements,” the site reads. “And also it is unique possibility closely to adjoin to the nature and aboriginals of Australia, to

see animal and flora, which not that on the car, and even on foot, you will not reach! “The rivers are literally teeming with crocodiles, wild birds, and mosquitoes.” While in the Torres Strait, “there is a probability to run into hurricane, though probability absolutely small” they say. “At the adjusted reception of weather forecasts always it is possible to take cover in time in the tideway of the river or in a good bay. “Since May head winds from the Pacific Ocean amplify, and start to abate only by September.” They also explain the history of the Night Wolves motorcycle club, which had its origins in 1983. “First illegal concerts of forbidden by state authorities rock bands took place. People of all USSR, named “lubers”, visited Moscow, trying to crash Rock-Culture, which was ‘anti-sovietic’ at that time. “Mass fights followed almost each of them. Exactly, at that time, a prototype of Night Wolves was created, people on bikes, as a power, defending the musicians.” Then, in 1998, “after severe natural selection, a group of people, cultivating a philosophy of man of Freedom, the symbol of which was the Bike, was finally formed”. The Night Wolves. Uh huh. Here at the Western Cape Bulletin, we think we understand. There is a Viking ship moored at Seisia? Of course there is. It may seem strange to a visitor to Weipa to read a newspaper article about the arrival of fresh fruit and vegetables. But anyone who has spent time living in remote Australia knows one of the biggest challenges is learning to live without basic necessities that our city counterparts take for granted. Congratulations to Woolworths Weipa Store Manager Jenny Everist and her team for going a long way to solving this problem by doubling the frequency of fresh produce arriving in Weipa.

Toll delivered the maiden Friday shipment of fruit and vegetables last week in two 20ft refrigerated containers, and the Woolworths team were on hand to quickly unload the fresh produce onto the shelves. The fact that most of the Friday produces was sold by the next day was clear proof of Weipa’s love for fresh and healthy food. The Woolworths team also held a free in-store BBQ last Thursday with customers enjoying a sausage sizzle to celebrate the additional fresh produce delivery.

Wik and Wik Way peoples’ Native Title recognised Queensland’s most enduring Native Title claim has been finalised after the Federal Court last Thursday recognised the Wik and Wik Way peoples as native title holders of land on Western Cape York Peninsula. Cook MP David Kempton, who officiated at the 11 October ceremony, said it was the 76 th time that a native title determination had been reached in Queensland and the 70th by consent. “This is a momentous occasion, recognising the Wik and Wik Way People’s long and enduring connection with their traditional land,” Mr Kempton said. “It means Australia’s legal system formally acknowledges the rights of the native title claimants to camp, hunt, fish and gather in the area, maintain areas of significance and conduct ceremonies in accordance with their traditional laws and customs. “Finalising this claim provides certainty for people with interests in the region by determining who the Native Title holders are and the extent of their rights and interests within the determination area.” “I am a strong supporter of this native title claim, and I am pleased to see it has, at last, been finalised.” Natural Resources and Mines Minister Andrew Cripps said the decision was the final stage of Queensland’s longest running claim. “This claim covers about 5,184 square kilometres of land and waters and includes land on the western side of Cape York Peninsula between Weipa and Aurukun,” he said. “The original claim was lodged in 1994 and partial determinations were made in October 2000, October 2004 and July 2009. “This determination

A keen contingent of more than 60 volunteers participated in Clean Up Australia’s ‘Great Northern Clean Up’ at Gonbung Point on Saturday morning. RTA Weipa Environmental Specialist Tim Ryan, who helped organise the day, said the aim was to restore the natural beauty of the area, which is very popular with fishers. “Gonbung Point has become a bit of a dumping ground but people are less likely to throw their rubbish on the ground if the area is clean,” Mr Ryan said. With the amount of rubbish piling up, the

nature spot was losing some of its abundant beauty but this problem has now been fixed thanks to the community effort. Numbers received a boost with more than 10 asylum-seekers from the Scherger Immigration Detention Centre volunteering to help pick up rubbish. Two skips full of rubbish were collected on the day and the decision has now been made to keep a rubbish skip at the point on a permanent basis as a way to ensure the litter problem does not return. Public notice Restricted public access Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa is conducting site survey work on the mine lease located south of the Embley river (see hatched area below). There will be heavy machinery operating at various locations on the mine lease from 1 October to 31 December 2012.

For your safety, there will be no access for the general public into the area during this period.

There will be minor 20 to 40 minute closures to service the dive barge i.e. fuel and sewage pump.

This includes closures to Amban, Boyds Point, and Pera Head access tracks.

CAPE York football fans Doreen Toby and Isabel Hall were amongst thousands of visiting men, women and children who travelled to Townsville for the 13th October rugby league Test between Australia and New Zealand at Dairy Farmer’s Stadium. Accommodation was booked out for the Test which was a sellout. More than 26,000 spectators watched Australia defeat New Zealand 18-10. Weipa lady Isabel and Doreen from New Mapoon were amongst scored of fans who waited patiently outside Townsville’s Holiday Inn, where the Aussie

players stayed, on the morning of the clash. “We are both fanatical Australian supporters and a lot of people from Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands are here for the Test. We would love to get our pics with some of the players,” Doreen said. Soon after the Kangaroos players appeared in the hotel foyer and they had their pics taken with Cameron Smith, Greg Inglis, Cooper Kronk, Tony Williams, James Tamou, Nate Myles, Billy Slater and coach Tim Sheens. “We feel so lucky and everybody up home will be happy for us,” Isabel said. The pair went out and watched the Test first hand that night.

Shore based anglers enjoy bounty Well most of my readers by now will know that I have moved on from Tackle World Weipa, but you can still leave reports and photos for this column. Fishing in general has been great for shore based anglers and the boaties with good captures for all. Evans Landing has been giving up some very good fish with anglers using live bait getting the better class of fish. Queenfish would be the prominent species but grunter, trevally and bream are there for the taking. The Mission River bridge has also been going off with large queen fish getting caught of the beach on the right hand side of the bridge. Again live bait is nailing the bigger fish. If you hook a barra they should

be returned to the water as quickly as possible because of the closed season. There are some bream around the pylons but be prepared to lose a bit of gear. After dark the blue salmon are around in big numbers along with some big tarpon and wolf herring. The wolfies make great troll baits for spanish mackerel so it doesn’t hurt to stock up on a few. Up in the Wenlock River there are some big saratoga and sooties taking lures. Mud crabs are on the march but not as many as last month but it’s worth putting the pots in. Grant from Tackle World was out at the leads the other day and he caught some nice finger mark and a huge GT. The leads can be

tricky but there has been some spanish taken on the troll, with the bottom fish you may have to move around till you find them. The longtail tuna are about, just look for the birds and either troll them or throw slugs to the edge of the school. For the guys who want to chase billfish they are still out there for the taking and can be fun on light tackle. There will be a meeting at the golf club on the 18th for the billfish club so if your interested in catching a billy come to the meeting. The Bamaga fishing classic is on the 27th with some great prizes and at $50 entry you get some meals as well. Till next week: slight seas, light breezes and tight lines. Cheers China

In A Grade fixtures at Weipa Squash Club this week, Team Darth Vader ruled the stars against Team Obi Wan Kenobi when A2 Rod Beilby starred in the four game clash against Tom Murray, and initially went down in the first game, but picked himself up and dusted off to steal the next three from Tom (3-1). A3 Jay Dumbleton played extremely well to defeat Steve Lugsdin (3-1), ironically A4 Jay Murray only won one game against her opponent Cole Dalton in a match that almost mirrored Tom’s game earlier (1-3). The results were even when Team R2-D2 and Team Luke Skywalker faced off, beginning with A2 Aaron Schleich being defeated by Ross Hyytinnen (2-3) in a five-game marathon, A3 Dallas Goodwin narrowly lost to Shane Spagnol (1-3), A4 Sherie Hinshen pushed Adam Woodhouse (playing as sub for Ben Tantau) to the limit and he almost got the first game but Sherie took the lot (3-0). Team Han Solo and Team Boba Fetta were even as well (so my prediction last week may not be accurate?) when A3 Glen Egan

lost to Jarrod Stockman (0-3), A5 Joe Buckley won against sub Barry (3-0). In B Grade, as well as in A Grade, many games are preplayed which is great and makes our nights earlier but we are missing team members to perform scoring duties. There are also other contributing factors, which result in forfeits, which is not good. It seems that there have been some excellent games however of those that were witnessed such as Team Ewoks B3 Bianca Borg fought tooth and nail against Wayne Ailey of Team C-3PO and forced the third game to long, however this was her only win (1-3), B4 Jordan was very proactive against Katie Delfs and only lost by 3 points (1-3), B5 Emilly Jackson narrowly defeated Kylie McDonnell even though the score does not depict how well Kylie rose to the challenge (3-1), Team Leia got the upper “foot” (as opposed to hand) against Team Yoda with B1 and B6 resulting in the exact same points score but differing match results! B1 Chris Bienvenu forced the first game to long then he and Otis Drum alternated results until Otis forced the fourth to long and went

on to win the fifth game – 2 points the difference! (2-3), B5 Renee Williams on paper easily defeated Cicely Baira, but in reality there were a lot of handouts and behind the scenes action (3-0), and the last match was a marathon lasting about an hour between B6 Lucy Boxall and Jess Hall with Lucy winning the match but Jess won by 2 points (3-2) (not that this counts but it is an interesting fact) – well done girls!! Team Jabba defeated Team Chew Bacca but not without stiff opposition from each of the four opponents they played. B3 Fiona Newsome only narrowly defeated Melissa Ghee by 3 points (3-2), and their spouses B4 Ian Newsome narrowly defeated Ben Ghee by 2 points (3-2) – how coincidental! B5 Kristie Moran played extremely well for four games to defeat Sub Doug Shaw (3-1), B6 Brandon Waretini beat his mother Claudia (playing as sub for yours squashfully) in four games, however Claudia held her own and gained 4 more points – thank you Claudia for doing your best for me (3-1) . Counting down till the end of yet another season! How time flies when we are having fun!

There is now over 80 swimmers registered for the new season, with membership numbers expecting to reach a record 100 this year! The first club night will be held at the Town Pool this Friday the 19th October, with sign on at 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start, so

come along for an awesome night of swimming and a BBQ dinner. Club nights will be held every Friday night through to Friday the 30th November, with the exclusion of the 16th November, where club members will be travelling to compete at the Mareeba Carnival on the Sunday. The 2012 Weipa’s “Fight like a Girl” Pink Ribbon Fun Golf Day was held on Saturday 6 October, with a record 21 teams registered for the fun-filled afternoon & evening. All moneys raised from this event goes to the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia. This is the third year the event has been run and its success is putting Weipa on the Australia map. In 2009, we raised $7,035 with a golf day and sit down dinner, in 2011 we raised $4,800 with a golf day, earning the recognition as the third highest fundraiser in Australia on both occasions. The final count for 2012 is $8,450, an amount that has surpassed all of our expectations. The Breast Cancer Institute of Australia is the fundraising and education department that supports the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group. This group conducts an independent breast cancer clinical trials research program to save lives from breast cancer. Their aim is to eradicate all suffering from breast cancer and achieve the ultimate goal of “a world without breast cancer”. It is always amazing to see the fantastic support and generosity shown by our sponsors and the Weipa Community. Events such as this are not possible without this support; you make our job of organising the event so much easier. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors, participants, those who purchased tickets, and those who made generous donations on the day. It was great to see so many participants get into the spirit of the day by dressing up in pink, and also decorating their carts. Evans House wins 2012 Swimming Championship On Friday 12th October Western Cape College held its annual Swimming Carnival. Mission River bridge will have maintenance conducted on it from August to December 2012. For your safety please keep clear from fenced area and other construction material set up around the bridge. Boat users are asked to keep clear of the dive barge and its buoys as there are mooring lines floating in the water that may cause damage if struck. The bridge maintenance will not cause any major road closures to the Mission River bridge.
