Sweet surprise catch

French beefcake too tough for NT croc to swallow By Corey Bousen

A FRENCHMAN enjoyed a beer at the Gove Boat Club on Sunday night just minutes after being attacked by a 2.5-metre croc, with it taking an hour to convince the professional Barra-fisherman that he should go to Gove hospital for treatment for his wounds. Muscly Yoann Galeran, 29, proved to be tougher than a $1 steak when the juvenile crocodile attacked him at around 7.30pm

LOCAL fisher Beverly Stirling got way more than she bargained for while cast-netting for bait at Hornibrook last week. Retrieving a particularly heavy net, Beverly thought she had the mother-load of bait but it turned out to be this fine specimen of Barramundi. For all the fishing news from around the local area see China’s column on page 17.

as he swam out to his tinny from the Gove Boat Club – fighting the reptile until he was able to break free from the croc’s jaws. The man vs croc battle wasn’t over just yet, however, with the croc attacking for a second time with Mr Galeran taking out round two before he was able to scramble to the safety of his aluminium dinghy, Mr Galeran’s skipper ‘Cooch’ told the Western Cape Bulletin on Monday.  continued page 2

Cooch, who is skipper of the commercial barramundi boat Ruby, said his deckhand was returning to the boat around 7.30pm after spending some time ashore at the boat club on Sunday. “He had just swum out from the beach to grab the dinghy when the croc came up behind him and grabbed him around the head,” he said. Cooch said Mr Galeran, who is known as “Yo”, is “not really sure what happened. He just went into survival mode. “He remembers trying to hit the croc and he wrestled with it a bit . . . got away from

The croc did attempt “to do a roll on” Mr Galeran at one stage, Cooch said, although he was strong enough to get away from this deadly croc maneouver. “Yo is a strong and fit fella so that was definitely in his favour,” Cooch said. Western Cape Bulletin visited the site of the attack early on Monday morning and talked with local Marty Jones who was with Mr Galeran in the bar of the boat club the previous evening, shortly after the attack. Describing the victim as a “good bloke” and “funny as hell”, Mr Jones said it was just another interesting day in the office for Mr Galeran and his fellow crew members on the Ruby, which was making one

DHIMURRU Aboriginal Corporation, which has the job of capturing the crocodile responsible for Sunday’s attack, says Mr Galeran was “foolish” for swimming after dark. “We’re upset here at Dhimurru that somebody chose to take that sort of risk,” Executive Officer Steve Roeger told the Western Cape Bulletin on Monday. “We all understand that crocodiles are part of our environment and that swimming in the sea at any time, but particularly after dark, is just a very foolish thing to do,” he said.

“The croc that attacked is nothing compared to the size of the crocs we’ve seen up the creeks in the last couple of days. They’re significantly bigger than my boat,” he laughed. The next person to launch his boat on Monday morning was local Dave Butterworth, whose personalised number plates ‘CROC B8’ continued the ‘crocodiles love to eat humans’ theme.

Mr Roeger said the fate of the crocodile is being discussed with Traditional Owners, but highlighted the possibility that the croc would be euthanised, once it is caught. “This person’s actions, by provoking a crocodile attack, will result in a number of consequences – not least of all consuming our resources but also requiring some definite action on our part with the crocodile, which would not have been the case if this situation hadn’t been created. “The options now are to have the crocodile euthanised or relocated to a croc farm, but we all know how expensive that will be so it’s quite likely the animal will be euthanised as there is no way it will be re-released back into the environment once it has been captured,” he said.

Jet skiing trek launches from Weipa

WHAT’S ON...

By Giembra Busmer

FIVE intrepid adventurers set off from Weipa last Thursday morning to not only make history but to also raise money for Variety, the children’s charity. Dave Bach, Mark Wallace, Peter Locock (Turtle), Matt Brown and his 14-year old son Jake will become the first people to leave and return to Australia on jet skis. The first leg of their journey was from Weipa to Seisia (with a re-fuelling stop in Mapoon), where the jet skiers met up with their land-based back-up crew of John Muller, Willie Eccleston and Gary Boon for an overnight stop before tackling the trek to Thursday Island on Friday morning. The jet skiers were then tackling the 210km journey from Thursday Island to Daru, Papua New Guinea. Matt Brown said that as nobody had ever attempted to ride a jet ski in and out of Australia before the trip did pose a few problems. “Two days before we were due to leave the Australian Maritime Safety Authority decided that our jet skis needed international shipping registration, but as time was running short they agreed to grant us a temporary pass,” Matt said. “We’ve got our passports on board and our temporary passes so hopefully everything will run smoothly.” After an overnight stop in PNG the skiers were heading back into Australian waters, heading down the east coast of Cape York to eventually arrive in Cooktown and join the “Cooktown and Down” Yamaha Variety Jet Trek. “The people of Cape York have been extremely generous and helpful,” Matt said. “Barry Mulley from the Coen Exchange Hotel is donating all our accommodation costs to Variety. He’s also organised a fuel drop for us

JET TREKKERS: An overnight stop at the Weipa Caravan Park & Camping Ground gave the jet skiers one last opportunity to check their gear and sort out their paperwork before heading to Daru. at Port Stewart and to pick up the skiers for an overnight stop.” Matt said the skiers would be visiting Lockhart River on their trip south and were hoping to give local school children a ride or two while they were there. “Rumour has it we may be able to con Dick from Bramwell Station into hopping on a ski also which could be a bit of fun,” Matt laughed. Once in Cooktown the jet skiers will be joined by 55 likeminded trekkers on a journey to Townsville – a world record number of jet skiers participating in a charity event. “The Yamaha Variety Jet Trek has been an annual event for the past 15 years, raising funds that help to bring about

an improved quality of life for children throughout Queensland,” Matt said. “In those 15 years we have covered over 250,000km on jet skis and raised over $250,000 . . . and Turtle has been on every one of those treks!” Matt’s son, Jake is the youngest person to make the Yamaha Jet Trek so far and he expects it will be the adventure of a lifetime for the 14-year old. “Sometimes the strangest things happen on a trek, like the time we were cruising past a remote beach and noticed a couple with a young child had bogged their car in the sand. “We approached them from the water, helped to get them going and took off again.

“You should have seen their faces when their rescuers came from the sea!” The boys said the threat of crocodiles and sharks did not bother them however safety was paramount. “We have EPIRBs and satellite phones on each ski and we are in radio contact with each other constantly,” Matt said. “Our back-up crew is highly experienced and our skis are thoroughly maintained throughout the entire journey.” The Western Cape Bulletin was at the Rocky Point boat ramp pre-dawn last Thursday to see the jet skiers off and we can report they did a fine job of launching their craft without getting even a toe wet!

LOCAL MP Warren Entsch took advantage on the Parliamentary non-sitting period to travel within the electorate last week, visiting townships on the Western Cape and Far North of the region. “I always look forward to the opportunities to visit the more remote communities in Leichhardt,” Mr Entsch said. “It’s important to not just keep up to date with the issues they’re facing, but also to celebrate the good news stories that are happening.” Mr Entsch travelled to Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw and Aurukun on Thursday, meeting with the available mayors, councillors and CEOs in the communities. “It was very interesting to see the new subdivisions and housing being built, I hope these will go some way towards easing the overcrowding in people’s homes,” Mr Entsch said. “We also spoke about land tenure issues, new community enterprises, the problems with digital

television transmission and the State Government’s review of the Alcohol Management Plans. “In Aurukun, it was great to hear that on Anzac Day, the community will commemorate the 11 members of the township who fought in the Torres Strait Light Infantry Brigade in WWII. This will be a first as I recently gave the council one of only four Brigade flags in existence. “In Kowanyama, council told me their concerns at the lack of commercial enterprise in the township. It’s interesting to note that the only three State Government-owned stores left in Cape York are in the three communities that are most economically disadvantaged – Kowan-

yama, Pormpuraaw and Lockhart River. They get no benefit from mining, which makes it very challenging for them. “I believe there is a very strong argument for transferring ownership of those stores to the communities to give them an opportunity to generate some level of income from the enterprise.” Earlier in the week, Mr Entsch held meetings on Thursday Island with representatives of the Torres Shire Council and the Torres Strait Regional Authority. He also attended a QantasLink forum, visited the site of a new hydroponic garden on Horn Island and met with councillors from the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council.

Aurukun shortlist announced The Queensland Government has finalised a shortlist of five groups to progress to detailed proposals of the Aurukun bauxite resource on Cape York Peninsula. The Deputy Premier and the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney announced on Tuesday the shortlisted groups were Aluminum Corporation of China Limited (CHALCO), Australian Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd (AIR), Cape Alumina Consortium, Glencore International AG and Rio Tinto Aluminium Limited. Mr Seeney said the development of the Aurukun bauxite resource was essential to the creation of a vibrant economic future for the Aurukun community, native titleholders and all Queenslanders. “We want to ensure the economic benefits of this resource flow back into the Aurukun community,” Mr Seeney said. “We will see these benefits

through mining jobs and improvements to infrastructure and further benefits through businesses that could be established in Aurukun to service the mine. “The shortlist includes Australian and international companies and has been narrowed down from seven expressions of interest lodged in February. “The successful companies will now have until mid-September to submit their detailed proposals for the mine to the government for evaluation. “The government is working towards a final decision on a preferred proponent by year’s end.” Mr Seeney said the commercial terms were based on the state’s key objectives for the development, namely that the project should maximise the benefits and returns from the project to the native titleholders – the Wik and Wik Way people represented by the Ngan Aak-Kunch Aboriginal Corporation (NAK) – and the Aurukun Shire Council.

Police seize sly grog

Kowanyama Police searched a Kowanyama home at about 7pm last Tuesday and seized a total of 140 litres of wine (above). Alcohol restrictions apply in this area with a zero limit of alcohol permitted. It is alleged the wine was being held in storage for sale to locals. In Kowanyama one five litre wine bladder can be sold for up to $200. A 42-year-old Kowanyama woman was issued with a Notice to Appear for the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 23.

“We will also ensure the project is delivered in a timely manner at no cost and no risk to Queensland, which will mean that all parties benefit,” he said. Mr Seeney said the government could explore the option for both a large and small-scale development that may be able to coexist given the size of the Aurukun resource. He said the government had been working closely with the NAK and Aurukun Shire Council on the retender since coming to office and that the close working relationship would continue throughout the remainder of the competitive bid process. “Our key objectives are to maximise the benefits and returns from the mine to the native titleholders and the Aurukun community and to maximise the financial returns to Queensland,” Mr Seeney said. “The native titleholders and the Aurukun community have voiced their strong support for development of the resource.”

Fluoridation recommended for Aboriginal communities NACCHO the National Authority for comprehensive Aboriginal Primary Health wants fluoride added to the water supplies of all Aboriginal communities. The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) CEO Lisa Briggs gave evidence to a House of Representatives inquiry hearing into adult dental services. In its submission NACCHO called on the federal government to provide money to Aboriginal-controlled health organisations so they could provide dental services. Aboriginal people were more likely than non-indigenous Australians to have lost all their teeth, it said. The organisation urged state

and territory government to fluoridate all town, city and Aboriginal community water supplies. As well more work was needed to attract dental workers to remote Aboriginal communities. “There are concerns among dental health professionals that positions in Aboriginal communities are not seen as part of the usual career ladder,” NACCHO said. Exposure to Aboriginalcontrolled health organisations during training would help attract more young dentists. Proper funding would allow organisations to offer competitive remuneration packages that would encourage dentists to remote and rural areas.

Women of Worth healing program Twenty women from the small community of Napranum gathered together at Mungallli last weekend as part of the community’s “Whole of community change program”. The weekend was devoted to “Women of Worth” with facilitators Annalise Jennings and Christine Mahoney from Dynamic Exchange guiding the women through three days of personal connection and healing. Guest speakers included Henrietta Fourmile and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Fiona Simpson. The weekend culminated in participants facing up to their fears by abseiling down the falls. The spirits of others were not dampened by the continuous rain as they tried their hand at archery, beading, painting and many other activities “The program was richly rewarding and the participants returned to Napranum committed to supporting the community’s 10 year plan,” Ms Jennings said. “The community plan finds the balance between economic development and community growth and is owned and driven by the community. The results in just 18 months have been remarkable.”

Support your school when you shop at Woolies The local community is encouraged to get behind schools in our area by collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn points when they shop at Woolworths. Now in its third year, the Woolworths Earn & Learn program enables schools and early learning centres to redeem Woolworths Earn & Learn points for a variety of educational equipment including supplies for maths, English, science, sports, arts and music. The 2013 Woolworths Earn & Learn program launched earlier this month with the help of one of Australia’s favourite homegrown music talents and new ambassador for the program, Jessica Mauboy. Already, close to 11,000 schools and early learning centres have signed up, this includes more than half of the primary schools in the country. Tjeerd Jegen, Woolworths Managing Director of Australian Supermarkets and Petrol said, “I am very proud of the Earn & Learn program. It’s our third year and we remain committed to providing schools with additional

resources to help our next generation reach their full potential. “Woolworths Earn & Learn not only represents a significant investment in youth and education, but an investment in Australia’s future. With 11,000 registrations for the 2013 program received so far it’s clear how valuable schools and early learning centres around the country find the program to be for their students,” said Mr Jegen. After providing nearly 720,000 pieces of educational equipment to more than 12,500 schools in 2012, this year’s program is set to assist even more schools in 2013. Woolworths customers can find out if their local school or early learning centre is participating by entering the postcode into the school search page on the website: www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn. If a school isn’t listed yet, you can contact the school to let the administration department know about this opportunity. The program remains open to all primary and secondary schools in Australia, as well as Early Learning Centres until Sunday,

June 9, 2013, and every $10 spent at Woolworths will earn one Woolworths Earn & Learn point that registered schools can redeem for educational equipment. Customers will also receive extra Woolworths Earn & Learn points when they purchase products from selected brands during the campaign. To get involved, customers can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn points at the checkout. Customers doing their shopping online at www.woolworthsonline.com.au will also receive Woolworths Earn & Learn points. Woolworths Earn & Learn points sheets are available in-store or at www.woolworths.com.au/ earnandlearn. Once completed, points sheets should be dropped off at participating schools or in collection boxes at Weipa Woolworths. The Woolworths Earn & Learn program co-ordinator at the school will collate the points so the school can redeem points for the equipment or supplies they need most.

THE Weipa Servicentre and the Weipa Bakery and Café have joined with the Western Cape College Weipa Campus and the P&C Association to limit the availability of “energy drinks” to students. Both businesses have agreed to cease selling energy drinks (such as Mother, Red Bull, V etc) to children in WCC Weipa Campus College uniform before and during college hours. Lyn James (school-based youth health nurse) advised that the health impacts of “energy drinks” to adolescents are concerning as they contain very high levels of caffeine. These drinks contain around 160-300mg caffeine per 500ml serve, compared to a cup of coffee which gives 40-80mg per cup and tea at 20-60mg per cup. The concern with the consumption of the large quantity of caffeine in these drinks is the adverse effects it is having on students health, including, difficulty concentrating , difficulty sleeping, insomnia, nervousness, headache, tachycardia (rapid heart rate), hypertension, anxiety and physiological dependence to caffeine.

fund instead of into your bank account. That’s all salary sacrificing is, a voluntary payment of part of your regular gross pre-tax income into superannuation. No doubt you’re aware that your employer already contributes an amount equal to 9% (or possibly more) on your gross income into your superannuation fund. They have to do this by law. Three reasons to salary sacrifice 1. It’s highly tax effective 2. You’ll have more money invested for your retirement 3. You pay less tax on super investment returns than you would on personal investments. For more information on salary sacrificing, superannuation, retirement planning or other financial services, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam.woodhouse@ infocus.com.au. An initial consultation is free and in the comfort of your own home.

Some of the students who are consuming these drinks have shown that they have difficulty learning and behaving appropriately due to the adverse effects of the drinks. WCC principal, Garry Hutchinson advised that with the introduction of the “no sale” policy, staff, students, parents and outside agencies working at the College have noticed a decreasing trend in poor behavioural data. “It is great to see the business community support our youth to achieve the best health outcomes for their future”, he said. WCC Weipa Campus P&C Association president Anne Siegmeier said that a request was made to the College to support the “no sale” initiative and to ban the consumption of these energy drinks on College Notes: 1. All superannuation contributions must be preserved in the superannuation environment. grounds by students. 2. Contribution caps apply. “With both the ban on 3. The first $25,000 of employer (or self-employed) deductible contributions will attract the concessional tax of 15%. Should contributions exceeding this cap be made, then tax will be charged at 46.5% on consumption and the “no sale” that contribution. 4. SALARY sacrificing can boost your retirement savings and slash your income tax bill! If you’re on a good wicket, the tax man takes up to 45 cents in the dollar in income tax. By having that dollar put into your superannuation fund by ‘salary sacrificing’ you pay only 15 cents in tax, if your income is less than $300,000. The difference between 45 cents and 15 cents is 30 cents. Doesn’t sound like much does it? But consider this. If you’re earning in the highest income tax bracket and you salary sacrifice five thousand dollars, the net tax saving is $1,500. If you’re on a more modest income you can still significantly reduce your income tax bill by salary sacrificing. Plus, you get to enjoy a raft of other benefits. Salary sacrificing – what exactly is it? Don’t be put off by the word sacrificing. There’s very little pain involved in instructing your employer to switch some of your income into your superannuation

Are all insurance premiums going up? WE have all received our Home & Contents policy renewal notices over the last 6 months, and have been smashed with a 50% to 100% rise in premium over the last year. From an Advisor’s point of view we have had numerous conversations with clients talking about insurance company’s hiking up the rates on all insurances. The fact is this is not true. This will probably come as a surprise to all but Life Insurance premiums have actually reduced over the last 2 to 5 years. A couple of quick examples from client reviews we have completed over the last month or so: 1. We managed to save one client $4,500 per year on their range of insurance premiums simply by doing a review. 2. Our second client had a tenyear-old Income Protection policy and can now get the same cover with improved benefits for $3,000 per year less. 3. Client number three has received a premium $1,000 per year cheaper for the same level of cover with the same company. So, to cull the myth of all insurance premiums going up, in actual fact, Life Insurance premiums are coming down. With this in mind, the premium isn’t the only reason to review or consider changing from one policy to another, as built-in benefits, financial backing and Claims Departments also play a major role in who you should select as an insurer.

The Wenlock Goldfield

THE Wenlock Goldfield, formerly known as the Batavia Goldfield, was officially proclaimed in 1892 following the discovery of gold by William Baird at Retreat Creek, a tributary of the Wenlock River. The initial yields were high with output in 1893-4 being around two thousand ounces. As other nearby sources of gold were discovered the field moved and expanded and other settlements were established, including Bairdsville, Top Camp, Lower Camp or Plutoville, all mainly supplied from Coen. The Lower Camp settlement eventually evolved into the settlement of Wenlock, becoming the main township in the area by the 1930s. It was officially named Wenlock in 1938. Gold output varied from place to place, encouraging miners and prospectors to move from field to field in search of higher yields. The Batavia, later Wenlock, field was to be the most productive goldfield in

Cape York during the Great Depression, with six payable mines in operation. During the Second World War, the Australian Army dismantled and removed significant quantities of equipment and infrastructure from the mines and mills of the Wenlock Field, with the aim of preventing the mines being used by the Japanese in the event of an invasion. Following the Second World War the Wenlock Field was still to prove productive however on-going challenges such as devastating flooding and an on-going lack of investment had resulted in a decline in production, although some prospecting as well as mining operations continue. Some of the more well-known mines that have operated in the area have included the Golden Gate, Reform, Black Cat Amalgamated, Golden Casket, Black and White and the Zamitt mines. The photograph below shows an unidentified mine in the Wenlock Goldfield during the early 1930s, a particularly productive phase in the field’s history.

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

You know what? I think there’s a change coming. Granddad used to look at migrating birds, the colour of the water in the creek, how the clouds were blowing over the range, and he would know there was a change on the way. Nowadays, it’s easier. I watch the polies zipping around, listen to what they say on television, and note who they choose to shake hands with and – yes – I think our Julia is going to have a relaxing Christmas, with no office work to trouble her. I suppose we will have to get used to Tony Ears, whether we like the idea or not. Our Tony is practising already. After a few years spent hooning around kicking heads, both inside and outside his own party, he has decided it is time to be polite. Even to his opponents.

In fact, he even deplores the current low standards of political debate, and can’t imagine how they happened. He has always respected Julia, and would never say anything mean about her. And he has discovered Indigenous people. After years of channelling money up north, he has decided he had better take a look at where it is going. When he wins the next election and gets to be top dog, he has decided that the post of Prime Minister is not enough. He is going to be Minister for Indigenous Affairs too. As he said himself, “There will be, in effect, a Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs.” Mmmh. Sounds pretty strange to me too. If I was an Indigenous Australian, I think I would be worried. Possibly he will treat his extra portfolio as a hobby, something to be pulled out of the pending tray if he ever has a moment between jetting around the world to meet other Prime Ministers or keeping the jackals at bay in parliament. More worrying, he might have decided to be hands-on because he has Strong Opinions. I expect we will all have to pretend to think the same way, or there will be no talking to him at all. Still, if that is what it takes to get the roads fixed and the bridges built . . .

Pilate was placed between a rock and a hard place with regards to trying to free Jesus. Two things caused Pontius Pilate to “wash his hands” of putting Jesus to death; the fact that he sensed something truthful and divine in Jesus, (the dream by Pilate’s wife didn’t help: Matthew Ch 27 v 19) and the threat of the Jewish religious leaders who would dob him in to Caesar. They would dob him in for not dealing with a person who claimed to

be a king, thus taking away Caesar’s claim to be the only king and God. Pilate tried to hand the problem of Jesus over to Herod by saying that Jesus really came under his jurisdiction (rule) as Jesus was from Galilee. But Herod sent him back saying that Jesus was not guilty of the charges far as he was concerned. (Read Luke Ch 23 vs 1-17) So in Mark Ch 15 vs 6-15 we learn that Pilate found a way of easing his own conscious with

regards to dealing with Jesus, and dodging any trouble that may come his way from Caesar. He was in the habit of releasing one prisoner that the people asked for during the Jewish Passover. Pontius Pilate gave the people two choices that year, Jesus Barabbas (Matt Ch 27 v 16) or Jesus who calls himself the Son of God. Barabbas the murderous freedom fighter was chosen over Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is truth.

Rev Michael Connolly.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas THREE more teams got off the mark last weekend, while surprise packet Port Adelaide remains on top of the table with Essendon and Geelong. This was a good round for some of the strugglers to notch up their first win. The Demons looked like capitulating again in what would have been a horrendous loss to GWS in Melbourne. They were down by 18 at three quarter time but they came out firing in the fourth and kicked a bag full in a spirited comeback under huge pressure. Good on them! Carlton also had their first win and what a way to do it, on the longest road trip of them all in Perth. Their opponents, the Eagles, are a real disappointment so far and look far from the finals force many expected them to be this year. Meanwhile, after a tough draw to start the year, the Kangas finally got on the board! They knocked over the disappointing Lions, who, on closer inspection of the table, still sit below the Suns. Not that their supporters would want to be reminded of this. Essendon and Geelong are still the form teams and continued their show of strength with good wins over the Saints and Swans respectively. Hawthorn were too strong for Freo in Tasmania and in Adelaide the Crows added to the Bulldogs woes. The other Adelaide team, last year’s cellar-dwellers Port, are the real surprise with four straight. If they can keep up this form they will be looking at finals for the first time in a few years. On the weekend they showed real class and an exciting fast brand of footy to down the Suns. Being a Suns member I found it very consoling to see via a club email that they have re-introduced a deal with McDonalds where members can get a free Quarter Pounder on the Gold Coast if the team wins a quarter during a match. This deal always coincides with them playing poorly, so it has run pretty much for the last two whole years. It is encouraging to see it yet again rolled out after just four rounds. It is a really awesome deal too, with a winning quarter to membership fee ratio working out at about $18 a burger in previous years. I’m so excited about this really useful deal here in Weipa! The much-anticipated game of the round between Richmond and Collingwood had plenty of highlights, none better than from the star forwards from both clubs. The Tiger’s Jumping Jack took some great pack marks while Travis Cloak stole the show with a bag of seven in a good win for the Magpies. The huge MCG crowd of eighty thousand witnessed Richmond’s stellar start to the year come to a sudden stop. This could be a timely reminder to the Tigers that they still have work to do to be consistent enough to stay up the top end of the table. This week starts with the traditional ANZAC Day battle at the “G” between Essendon and Collingwood. This should be a full house and a fantastic game on this great day. St Kilda also takes on the Swans on ANZAC Day across the ditch with our ANZAC brothers in Wellington New Zealand. Richmond will be tested again, this week taking the long travel to Fremantle in WA. GWS play host to the Gold Coast in the battle of the youngsters, while Carlton hope to continue their new-found form over the Crows in Melbourne. The Cats continue their journey at the top, playing the Bulldogs. Port Adelaide are at home and will get a chance to run rampant again this week over the West Coast Eagles. The Demons have a tough task against the Lions at the Gabba and the Hawks v Kangaroos game could be a beauty! My tips for anyone who wants to join me well down the tipping table: - Essendon, Sydney, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Carlton, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Hawthorn. Wishing you too could get a burger because your team is so bad their supporters are rewarded if the team wins just one quarter of a match. Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Karl THE weekend was full of feeling in all Representative games! Friday kicked off with the ANZAC Test between Australia and New Zealand. The game proved to be a blockbuster with the teams being even heading into half-time. The Aussies were too strong in the second half with interchanges being used at key times proving the difference, giving the Kangaroo’s the win. Saturday started with the Holden under 20s State of Origin. The NSW team ran the Queenslanders off the park, and came away with the win. Then was another Test Match between Samoa and Tonga. The match was a spectacle with a few young players standing out for Tonga, to give them the win against a much better Samoan team on paper. On Sunday the NSW City versus Country match was played, which proved to be an intense match with players vying for the Blue’s jersey. Country proved too strong for the City side, coming away with the win. Round seven will bring back Thursday night footy with two matches being played. The first game is between the Roosters and the Dragons. I will be attending this match and it is shaping to be a thriller! The second game will be between the Storm and the Warriors. Friday only has one match between the Sea Eagles and the Rabbitohs, I believe this will be the match of the round. On Saturday the Cowboys take on the Raiders, and the West Tigers will play the Broncos. Sunday’s games see the Titans play the Knights, and the Sharks go into battle against the Bulldogs. Monday night’s game brings the round to a close with the Panthers and Eel’s playing for a win. In local news, Weipa’s Rugby League Competitions are set to kick-off next week, with junior rugby league starting on Thursday, May 2, and senior rugby league starting on Saturday, May 4. Karl’s Tips: Roosters, Storm, Cowboys, Broncos, Titans, Sharks, Eels. Yours in footy Karl

Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com THIS week’s weather took a turn for the better and it showed in what was caught. Offshore there were some nice Fingermark caught on the reefs to the south. There are large schools of Pilchards all over the place and the Tuna and Mackerel are about gorging themselves on the abundant food source. I fished with Stuart McKinnon on Sunday around the Red Cliff area and found the fishing pretty tough, with only three keeper Fingermark, however the biggest was around the 70cm mark. We moved around a bit but there was very little current which made things very tough. Talking to the guys coming back to the ramp they encountered a similar pattern, with one or two fish caught and then the small fish moved in, along with the sharks – first the Black Tips and then the big Bull Sharks. We had one come up chasing a hooked Trevally that

would be in the 300kg class and that can be a bit scary in a small boat. Dave Donald had some clients this week and found some good fish, with Fingermark up to 80cm on the reefs and some nice Barra and Jacks in the creeks and rivers. Speaking of the rivers the tides haven’t been good but there have been several Barra caught by some of the clients using the local guides, in excess of one metre and one river not fishing any better than the other. In the Pine river there have been some good Jacks caught as well as the Barra. The Mission River has been going off at the moment and in one mad session I know of there were 20 Barra caught by members of the Sodexo fishing club, with the largest Barra going 80cm and two big Threadfin Salmon all caught on Mud Herring. The bridge is holding small Queenies taking live bait.

I was looking for Prawns in the Mission on the flats and watched as large Barra smashed bait on the flats. The Hey river has had a lot of big Barra working the edges but they are switched on to Mullet and are hard to get on lures. Alan Philiskirk and his boys have been getting his clients some good fish and there have been a lot of smiling faces after their charters. I haven’t had a report from Eclipse charters this week but I’m sure I’ll have one next week. Robert Armitage-Slark went up to the Pennefather and caught Queenies of the beach and Bream in the lagoon, which were promptly smoked and eaten. Next week’s tides will be much kinder for the anglers so ‘til next week, smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. Cheers, China

Weipa soccer season kicks off THE Weipa soccer season kicked-off last weekend and the players certainly enjoyed their games, while improving their skills and teamwork. It was also great to hear lots of cheering and enthusiasm from both the players and spectators. The featured game this week is Teens Blue versus Gold: There was some fierce sibling rivalry with Elijah Rye (Blue) and Lara Rye (Gold) going head to head and contesting the ball on many occasions throughout the match. Lara was terrific in defence for Gold, stopping Blue from running away with more goals. Kieran, Daniel and Jarrod showed some great skills and ran hard to kick two awesome goals. Tyler had great speed and ball skills helping Elijah, Shayla and Corey to a two-goal victory. A very exciting game and all players should be very proud of their efforts. The final score was Gold 2, Blue 4. Game results, Saturday, April 20 - Tykes: Gold 15 Blue 1; Red 3 Green 3 draw. Teens: Gold 2 Blue 4; Green 0 Red 4. Titans: Blue 6 Red 7.
