Archer River: Police search for missing man AT time of press (Tuesday, March 18) Police and emergency services were continuing their search for a 69-year-old missing Weipa man after a vehicle was swept off a causeway at Archer River, north of Coen on Friday afternoon, March 14. Initial information indicated two men were in a vehicle travelling south on the Peninsula Development Road when they attempted to cross the Archer River via a ﬂooded causeway around 5.30pm. The vehicle was swept downstream with one of the occupants managing to swim to the bank of the river while the second occupant could not be located. The incident was reported to ofﬁcers around 3.30pm on Saturday, and a search operation commenced at the site that afternoon. Police and emergency services searched the banks of the river system on foot and by air in an effort

to locate the missing man. The Queensland Police Dive Unit was deployed and travelled from Brisbane, arriving in Cairns on Monday afternoon. Specialist officers from the Dive Squad transported specialist equipment to the Archer River by road and local Cairns Tactical Crime Squad officers travelled with the divers to assist in the search. Police divers and members of a QFES Swift Water Rescue team were due to arrive at the Archer River search site sometime after 2pm on Tuesday where they were expected to make an assessment of conditions before commencing the search for the vehicle and the missing man. At time of press the Archer River remained flooded with the river level approximately 0.7 metres over the causeway and steady, and Police had advised the Archer River remained officially closed to all traffic at the Archer River crossing.

WEIPA WAGS fans lined the local roads to urge the girls on during Sunday’s training run.

THERE was no Sunday sleep-in for this group of “wheelie” keen women as the Weipa WAGs ladies (with their wheelbarrow and busdriver) assembled at the pool parking area at 6am to attempt their next challenge, 40km of wheelbarrow relay running. Suddenly training is getting very serious! The race itself is made up of three days of varying distances and terrains. The ﬁrst day of the race is a relatively ﬂat, sealed bitumen road from Mareeba to Dimbulah. Our second day is from Dimbulah to Almaden, 63km of mostly sealed but hilly road, with several

steep inclines. Our ﬁnal day is from Almaden to Chillagoe, 33km of some sealed and some gravel areas, with minor to moderate hilly sections. This is a huge undertaking for us all, and our success with fundraising for the RFDS and our training comes from the support we get from this community. This Saturday, March 22, at the Weipa Children’s Marvellous Morning Markets, we will be selling home-made cakes, and doing a sausage sizzle and we hope to see you there. Alcohol seizure, Kowanyama

KOWANYAMA Police charged a 19-yearold Mooroobool man with one count of possession of alcohol in a restricted area, on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. It will be alleged police seized 5.6 litres of rum and vodka after the man few into the community at about 6pm on March 11. Funding still available to honour ANZAC ceremony LOCAL organisations that want to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac are urged to submit their applications for Federal Government funding before the round two deadline on April 30. Organisations being urged to apply for a grant include community and ex-service organisations, schools and other educational institutions, museums and cultural institutions, local government authorities and other non-proﬁt community organisations. There is a broad scope for the projects, which can include public commemorative events, new First World War memorials or honour boards, the restoration of existing First World War memorials or honour boards, the preservation and display of First World War memorabilia and relevant school projects. Pormpuraaw Traditional Owners reject draft Cape York Regional Plan P o r m P u r a aw Tr a d i tional Landowners have backed wild river protection of the Holryd, Edward and Coleman rivers, rejecting the controversial draft Cape York regional Plan. The Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Council, DOGIT Trustees and Traditional landowners are demanding “veto” against mining, exploration and dams to protect the many uniquely special cultural and natural values of the traditional Pormpuraaw Homelands from damage. A written statement, signed by the Traditional Landowners the Pormpuraaw Deed of Grant in Trust, the Trustees of the Pormpuraaw DOGIT and the Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council accuses the Queensland Government of being “one-eyed” in a 10-year battle to ban mining and promote conservation investment across the Pormpuraaw DOGIT. “Our people were ready to get on board with Wild Rivers,” the statement says.

“We are for protecting our untouched rivers so they keep flowing all year round. “We do not want water to be taken from our rivers for mining, exploration, or dams. We worry for the top catchments of our big rivers as they are undisturbed by development with good clean water.” Pressure is building on the Queensland Government to extend consultation on the regional plan beyond the March 25 deadline, after promises were made to Traditional Owners in Mareeba on Friday. LNP Member for Cook David Kempton, promised a delegation of Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners and Laura Pastoralists the public comment period would be extended for a further three months. The joint statement urges the LNP Government to invest in a conservation economy, ban mining and ignore outside interests. “On our Homelands there can be no mining, no explora-

tion, no dams,” the statement says. “We reject the draft regional plan as it is today. “We do not want a mining future for our Homelands or for our people, “We know what is happening in Cape York communities living with mining. “Our people and our elders have held mining interests out of the Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire.

The Statement calls on the Queensland Government to respect the community wishes. “The Queensland Government must not take preference over us. But the Queensland Government has been listening to outside interests. “The Queensland Government have listened to our community with only one ear. “We want small scale development only at our speed and under our control.”

Young Indigenous leader campaigns on climate change SauL west is an 18 year old Indigenous man with blood ties to Tasmania and the Torres Strait Islands. In mid-2013, Saul was selected for the National Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy (NIYLA) – he was one of 50 youth to be selected nationally for the week long program held in Sydney. During this program Saul contributed to national youth-led campaigns addressing social issues including Constitutional Recognition, refugees and asylum seekers, suicide prevention, “Closing the Gap” and his primary focus, climate change. This program significantly inspired and motivated Saul distilling a sense of belief in himself which took him on a spiritual journey where he stated, “We

may be separated by time and space but we are connected through our hearts and memories. May our ancestors watch over us all as we make our tracks in the sand.” Saul has also been selected for an acting role as a soldier for the mini-series “Anzac girls” which is to be broadcasted on ABC in 2014. Applications are now open for NIYLA 2014 and Saul strongly encourages Indigenous youth to apply. “This program has changed my perspective on myself and my life. Deputy premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and planning Jeff Seeney said after a considered assessment, the Queensland Government had decided not to accept two existing proposals to develop the Aurukun bauxite deposit because benefits for local communities were deemed to be insufficient, and timeframes for delivery of those benefits too long. “When we came to government the process of developing these deposits was going nowhere given the previous Government’s insistence that proponents also build a refinery in Queensland,” Mr Seeney said. “We shifted the focus away from a refinery and instead made the primary goal to deliver benefits to the people of Aurukun. “In November 2012, we opened an Expressions of Interest process inviting proposals from companies interested in developing these bauxite deposits. “We wanted proponents we could rely on to get this mine up and running in a reasonable timeframe and who could make a long term commitment to Queensland for the benefit of the

traditional owners of Aurukun.” Mr Seeney said the Queensland Government was determined to avoid the mistakes of the past, where companies were granted rights but were later unable deliver on the commitments they made. “After carefully considering the proposals, the Government is not satisfied that either bid – from the Australian Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd (AIR) or Glencore International AG – could deliver what the Government had hoped for in a timely manner ,” he said. “We have decided to bring this process to a close and revisit this development opportunity at a later date, rather than take a chance that the objectives might one day be satisfied by one of the proponents. “The State Government remains interested in developing this resource for the benefit of the local community of Aurukun and all Queenslanders. “Our door remains open to proposals which would develop these resources in a timely fashion, and to other resource developments on the Cape that have the potential to deliver economic benefits.”

Bid rejection a huge disappointment the traditional Owners behind a bid to develop the Aurukun Bauxite mine are deeply disappointed that the Newman Government has shelved plans to allow its development. Australian Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd (AIR) had assembled a strong bid after being short-listed in April last year. Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney had publicly praised AIR’s bid, and lauded the capabilities of the short-listed tenderers. The AIR bid broke new ground by proposing that Traditional Owners participate as equity holders in the mine, as part of a broader indigenous benefits package. “We are deeply disappointed,” said Chair of the Cape York Land Council, Richie Ah Mat. “The Aurukun community has waited 39 years for a strong State Government to give approval to develop this mine to enable the people of Aurukun to get ahead. “The Traditional Owners were very enthusiastic about the possibility of AIR’s indigenousled proposal, and the likelihood of rapid mine development and job creation.” Aurukun Shire Council mayor Dereck Walpo expressed his dissapointment with the decision to not grant a lease to any mining proponent, and said the Council was looking forward to a personal briefing from Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney on the decision. “ASC was keenly looking forward to mining in the next few years as it saw many benefits for the community in infrastructure plus employment and training for its local

people, Mayor Walpo said. “ASC has and will continue to strongly pursue business development opportunities, for example the business precinct, accommodation complex development, batching plant and community centre development, etc.” The ASC now believes that it should be compensated for its huge expenditure on legal advice, consultants fees, elected Council, management and staff time and expenses. “During the past 15 months Council diligently pursued a fully professional process and we feel gutted and emotionally upset that a rapidly developing community has missed out again, for the third time,” Mayor Walpo said. “Council feels as though it has let the community down in raising the hopes of the community so that dependency on the welfare system could be diminished in the future. “We have had a red hot go at changing the community’s future only to be deprived of a genuine chance for its peoples future through the possibility of developing a genuine economy and autonomy,” he said. Mayor Walpo said the ASC was looking forward to comprehensive discussions on how the Aurukun community will be fully compensated for its financial and personal contributions and efforts in this thwarted mining process. “We consider that Council should receive significant compensatory funding towards its numerous business development projects so that the community can pursue its dream to have zero unemployment in Aurukun,” Mayor Walpo said.

THE My Pathway Group, in conjunction with the Napranum Men’s Group supported a two-week activity course with professional wood carver, Kelvin Williams last month. This course was a fantastic opportunity for Kel to share his skills with the local men and for the 15 participants to enjoy a focussed project, that not only taught them the fundamentals of wood carving, but also provided them with an opportunity to come together in an enjoyable and inspiring activity. The participants were each given one piece of pine to create a double-sided carving, with a kangaroo on one side and barramundi on the other. For this initial course all the work was created by hand using a wood chisel and Stanley knife and when completed the piece was then treated with wood stain. Ongoing activity courses will incorporate the use of mahogany and machined shapes to broaden the skill sets of the men participating. Once completed, the finished pieces will be on exhibit at the Ruchook Cultural Festival to be held in Napranum in September, accompanied by profiles of each of the artists. Expressions of interest called for new Torres and Cape hospital board ExprEssions of interest are being sought from qualified people who wish to be considered for board membership on the newly formed Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS). Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the TCHHS would be responsible for improving health service outcomes for residents in the Far North and would replace the Cape York HHS and the Torres Strait-Northern Peninsula HHS. Mr Springborg said the TCHHS would result in stronger governance, better representation and improved patient services across the remote areas of Cape York and the Torres Strait. Advertisements seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified people will be placed in newspapers and on-line from March 22, 2014 and submissions will close on April 11, 2014. Mr Springborg said the selection and appointment process was governed by legislation and required strict adherence to set guidelines and appointments would be announced following this process. “The Hospital and Health Board Act requires the appointment of people with the skills, knowledge and experience to perform effectively and efficiently,’’ Mr Springborg said. “People interested in submitting an expression of interest to join the board must comply with their obligations as described in the formal application pack.

It sets out the roles of the chair and board members and details the criteria that are used to select the successful applicants.’’ The amalgamation of the two HHS was announced in December 2014 as part of the Government’s plan to revitalise front-line services and brings the number of HHS in Queensland to 16. Mr Springborg said that due to their small size, individually, the previous two health services lacked the critical mass for efficient stand-alone administration. “The new TCHHS will finalise the Government’s plan to see control of health resources in every part of the State vested in community-based boards,” he said. Fundind for domestic violence prevention WEIPA Community Care Association (WCCA) will receive funding to help shine the spotlight on domestic violence prevention. WCCA will host awareness-raising activities during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May, thanks to the funding from the State Government. David Kempton, Member for Cook, said the WCCA would receive $3000 to run the String Women’s Circle project. “The Government is partnering with organisations such as WCCA to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and to help people take action before it’s too late,” Mr Kempton said. He said the funding would go a long way towards domestic and family violence prevention in the area. “I am encouraging the community to come together, support these events and take action to show domestic and family violence is never acceptable.” WCCA will team up with Western Cape College to host a series of workshops for women in Mapoon, Napranum and Weipa to increase community awareness of non-physical abuse in domestic, family and elder violence. COEN Police station has recently received a bit of a facelift thanks to one of the local women in the community. Ofﬁcer in Charge of Coen Police station, Sergeant Matt Moloney was recently in the station busy on the computer with paperwork when local woman Lisa Peter walked in and announced she was bored. Sergeant Moloney raised his eyebrows and a shiver ran down his spine. A bored teen often means more work for Police. As a father of three little kids, Matt’s used ﬁnding tasks and opportunities to keep kids busy, so he set about coming up with a plan to make sure Lisa wasn’t bored! Now whilst Sgt Moloney is trained in law enforcement, project co-ordination isn’t something that comes naturally. Policing isn’t just about arresting people and sending them off to jail, it’s about preventing

crime and reducing risks to people and property within the community, so Sgt Moloney put his thinking cap on and came up with a plan. The local Wellbeing centre which is owned by the Royal Flying Doctors, acts as a small hub for the community. The centre has previously sustained damage to a number of windows as a result of someone being bored in the community. Coen will be hosting the Cape 150th anniversary celebrations this year and Sgt Moloney was hoping to somehow brighten up the local Police station before the celebrations. Lisa being bored presented the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with the one stone as the old saying goes. Lisa’s enjoys painting, so she set about gaining some community support. Sgt Moloney called the Wellbeing centre, and to their credit, the staff willingly supplied paint for the project.

“Over the next couple of weeks, Lisa came in every day and painted the Police crest on the station garage door,” Sgt Molony said. “She put the names of the local tribes and clans around the crest, with spears behind it. “The spears behind the crest symbolise indigenous people being behind and supporting the Police. “Lisa shows that both our cultures share a sense of duty and concern for law, order and justice,” he said. “It was a real win/win situation. It brightened up the station and it gave Lisa something to do so she was no longer bored. “I think people in our community have noticed that Lisa has stepped up and done something very positive for the community,” Sgt Molony said. “This in turn helps locals recognise that when the Police step in and arrest someone or remove them from a situa-

tion, its not about the person themselves. “It’s about stopping violent or anti-social behaviour in our community, and making it a safe place to be.” Sgt Moloney gets frustrated sometimes when people make a general assumption that Police and indigenous communities are in constant conﬂict. “ O r d i n a r y, e v e r y d a y interaction is quite different from sensational reports of conﬂict. Police work closely with communities from all cultural backgrounds,” he said. “Lisa has depicted a very accurate representation of how life in our community really is. “The spears behind the crest, actually represents the common ground between indigenous people and Police. “It shows a willingness for all of us to work together for the betterment of our community,” Sgt Molony said.

to support shipping and communication through the area. Sweers Island also drew settlers away from Burketown during a major outbreak of fever in 1868. The wreck of the paddle steamer Pioneer, which came to grief in 1870, is a visible remnant of the former town of Carnarvon. The Pioneer had mainly been involved in the shipping of wool, tallow and hides from the mainland to Sweers Island, but the thirty metre vessel was wrecked in 1870 on the island’s south-western tip during cyclonic weather. During the late nineteenth century, Carnarvon was the administrative centre for the Gulf of Carpentaria region with a customs house, bond store, hotel as well as police facilities. This image, dating from 1871, shows the Sweers Island Customs House, not long after the facility was first established. The people standing at the front of the building are probably the customs official and family members. Other buildings at the settlement can be seen to the rear of the customs building.

Sweers Island sWeers Island is located to the east of Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The island was named in 1802 by Matthew Flinders during his voyage of circumnavigation, in honour of Cornelius Sweers, one of the councillors of Batavia, who had originally authorised Abel Tasman’s journey of 1644. Tasman had been sent by the Dutch government to determine whether a strait existed between New Guinea and the Great Southland, later to be known as Australia, however, his voyage encountered many difficulties and obstacles. Tasman was however, in all likelihood, the first European to have seen Sweers Island. Flinders also sailed through the area and saw the island, naming its high land Inspection Hill, noting “its obvious nature as a vantage point. The nearby Bentinck Island was also named by Matthew Flinders, after Lord William Bentinck, who had been the Governor of Madras, India. In the mid-1860s, the little town of Carnarvon was established on the island as an alternative to Burketown,

Aurukun Clean Up Australia Day

Volunteers clean up Aurukun community THE Aurukun community participated in a Clean Up Australia Day event last Sunday with a good crowd of 30 people attending. Approximately 2 tonnes of rubbish was collected by the volunteers from around the township area. The Aurukun Shire Council looks forward to reduced rub-

bish being left in the streets and public areas and hope all residents will do the right thing in the future. Following the clean-up a sausage sizzle and cold water were the order of the day. ASC would like to express a special thank you to Linda Sivyer who was again the co-ordintor of this community event.

So it looked like it was going to be a pretty sedate season ahead but OH NO come Saturday afternoon when the new kids on the block GWS rolled my human mum’s team the Swans all hell broke loose. Wish my humans had a couch that I could climb under as that was the only safe spot to be. Then on Saturday night the little master (whoever Gazza is?) got heaps of kicks, handballs, possessions, marks, goals etc. All this lingo I’d forgotten since last year but I will get polished up on it so I can keep you all informed.

It was a split round last week so the other five games are on this weekend starting on Thursday night with the Cats and the Crows. Mmm…the Felines I Am Forced To Live With can’t catch birds because of their bells so hopefully these Cats won’t be wearing bells. Motivation is the key Cape York youngsters join

David and Justin Briguglio won two gold medals at the Commonwealth and Oceania Powerlifting and Bench Press Tournament. EIGHTEEN months on the young leaders of Napranum are leading the way to shedding the impact of welfare dependency. There are shining examples of success stemming from the Young Adults Program of 2012 and the Men and Women of Worth program of 2013. These successes include young people from Napranum who have found their future in apprenticeships, construction work, the army, TAFE and RIO for example. These programs are part of the Whole of Community Change program run by Annalise Jennings of Dynamic Exchange which forms a key part of the community’s which has now been launched in Napranum, Aurukun, Mapoon and Northern Peninsula Area. Participants engage in personality profiling, upskilling confidence building, career selection as well as

lessons in real leadership and personal empowerment. When Annalise is not running her sessions through Cape York communities, she is home with her two sons David and Justin. Annalise often portrays her sons in the workshops as resilient, resourceful and compassionate young men. “For me, it starts at home. My sons have no professional sports coach but they do have each other and a belief that they can succeed if they are committed and strive to reach their potential,” Annalise said. David and Justin both took gold and broke Australian, Commonwealth and Oceania records when they recently competed in the Commonwealth and Oceania Powerlifting and Bench Press Tournament in Auckland. The older of the pair, David, 25, won gold and broke the Australian bench press record in the open under-83kg category with a lift of 207.5kg and became the Oceania Record holder and the Australian Record holder. Justin, 23, took gold in the junior under-93kg category with a 210kg bench press and also scored a silver in the three lift, which comprises a squat, bench press and dead lift. He is now the Commonwealth record holder. Annalise is proud of her sons achievements and truly believes the work she is doing in Cape York is the way forward for many young people who want more than what is on offer through welfare. – Contributed

YOUNG Aurukun Australian Rules players Denzel Yunkaporta, Tawu Marrott, Lorenzo Marbendinar, Zarlee Woola and Rayedon Kalkeeyorta are part of the high-rolling Cape York Eagles side which has won its first two games in the Cairns and District under-15 junior competition. They all played for the Eagles which made their debut in round one on March 7 and beat Port Douglas Crocs 15-14-104 to 3-1-19. The side backed up in round two a week later and defeated North Cairns Tigers. Cape York Eagles under-17 side made their debut in round one on March 14 and lost to Hawks 10-9-69 to 4-3-27. Game of the week – Tykes : Blue 2 v Green 2 What a thrilling game with all players showing fantastic skill. Green had every player working so hard – Mia was amazing in defence stopping many of Blue’s shots at goal and Sam did some awesome striking and ran hard. Kunio was so speedy and always in position to take the ball for Green, while Jet used some fancy footwork to support his team mates, and Isaac kicked two fantastic goals. Team Blue shone with lots of attacking play and they peppered the goal for much of the match to no avail until Chase, Ashton and Thomas together managed five sensational goals. Georgia’s great effort and support of her team mates helped to make the winning goals possible. There were some great battles between players and it was a very competitive and fun game which was refereed by the lovely Elle. Game leaders Beverly and Ali did a fantastic job of helping to keep the game moving which allowed the players to get the most out of their match – it was hard to tell who was having the most fun! CAPE York boy Gary Wright has hit the big time in the bodybuilding industry and made history by becoming the first North Queenslander to ever turn professional within the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB). Gary Wright won his division at the Pro Qualifier at ‘FitX’, one of Australia’s biggest Sports and Fitness Expos in Melbourne on Saturday at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Gary convincingly beat a line-up of Mr Australia national title holders to win the Pro card that earns him the right to compete internationally against the top bodybuilders in the world for cash prizes and qualification into the top competitions within the professional circuit. “I’m just an example of someone that had a vision of who I wanted to become, surrounded myself with the right people, handled the setbacks that undoubtedly came my way and worked relentlessly hard until I saw my dream realised. I’ve never been more inspired or excited than I am right now!” said Gary Wright, IFBB Pro.

Gary attributes his success to a dedicated mindset. “Anybody can do it in any vocation, mine just happened to be bodybuilding. My first love is personal development and I believe that if you can develop your mind and empower yourself with positive self beliefs, block out negativity and stay true to your vision you can achieve anything. Nothing outside of yourself is stronger than the power that resides within you,” said Gary Wright. Gary who grew up in the Indigenous community of Bamaga on Cape York plans to use his new status of professional athlete to do motivational talks and seminars in towns and cities across Australia, speaking on a range of subjects and covering more than just what it takes to become a professional bodybuilder. “It’s exciting for me because it gives me a chance to now give back and travel to smaller towns and cities to educate, inspire, motivate and speak. It’s a real opportunity to change a lot of people’s lives and break free from negative habits that could be holding them back from achieving in different areas of their lives. “Turning Pro now means I have a lot of work to do to take on the top guys in the sports circuit internationally. It’s like starting at the bottom of high school after finishing primary. It’s a whole new level of competition and an art form which will take me time to develop. But it doesn’t stop me right now from being able to engage, motivate and shed positive light into everyday people’s lives right here in Australia,” he said. Gary Wright’s sights are firmly set on the international circuit to take his bodybuilding career to the next level. One thing he says is a welcomed change is sponsors are now calling him. “Sponsors are chasing me now that I’m number one in Australia - it’s a nice change that’s for sure!” he says laughing.

Heard of the odd Barra taking lures around the big bridge, Gold Bombers or Squidgie Mongrels. Live bait in Granmas’ or Roberts is proving quite successful, Mullet or Prawn the best there. Hear tell a few good Red Emperor being caught around the ridges but no exact GPS mark, promise I won’t tell. There is a good fresh water run out of Black Rock and Bouchats if you want to flick some lures or just for a look. Any Whiting out there? Have a great week, and enjoy your fishing.

Most would have seen the whale floating just off the coast that Ben Bright wrote about in last week’s paper, and the croc eating a turtle on Pennefather Beach, only one of many tangled or dying in the many discarded foreign fishing nets littering our shores; and a dolphin lying dead in the mangroves in front of the Camping Grounds. The devastating high winds cause our shores each year is heart breaking sometimes.That’s nature and we must live with it. If we think about what we can do to lessen the damage we do personally it will make a difference and our fishery will survive. This week starts the knot tying section I will be doing for the next few weeks. These are knots that I, and many others, have over many years of use proven to be reliable, strong, and easy to tie. The first one is the Uni Knot, (uni standing for universal). This is one of the easiest knots to learn because it is based on the

Twenty one ladies (and three brave men) took to the Carpentaria Golf Club course last Saturday morning to enjoy the “Ladies Bring a Beginner Day”.

LAST weekend was the official start of the 2014 Carpentaria Golf Club competition. The focus of the match committee this year is to increase the numbers of members participating in the scheduled competitions, as well as to increase the number of ladies playing golf. Saturday morning a field of 21 took to the course in the “Ladies Bring a Beginner Day”. The ambrose event was enjoyed by all, including the three brave men who joined the ladies. ners day, coaching will be available each Thursday from 5-6pm for any ladies interested in learning the basics of the game. Sunday was a little wetter, and the day started with a field of 24, with only 10 finishing the 18 holes. The club-sponsored single stroke event was the first event for the newly introduced Stroke Play Series. The Stroke Play Series aims to encourage more players to participate in club competitions, and awards points to each player who completes the round, as well as points to the first five place getters. These points are tallied over

the year, and the prize valued at $500 will be awarded at presentation night to the top points scorers for both ladies and men. Results of Sunday’s event were Jay Murray winner with a ﬁne net 69, followed by Vesa Hyytinen with a net 74. Nearest to pins for the day went to Peter Ross on 15, and Vesa Hyytinen on 18. Events for next weekend are Saturday, March 22 9am tee off Ladies nine-hole single stroke, Saturday afternoon 12.30pm tee off Single Stroke competition, and Sunday is a Single Stableford, tee off at 12.30. All players are asked to

put their names down on the sheets at the club before the day so that play can be organised in advance. Alternatively, call the club on 4069 7332 and ask the staff to register your name. The Club is pleased to announce Goodline as the sponsor for the 2014 Weipa Open. This event will be held on Saturday and Sunday May 3 and 4. Friday night will be the traditional Calcutta, and on the Saturday night, there will be a tropical-themed social function. More details to follow.
