Apprentices learn skills on-site

The new apprentices stand around their “rolling tool trolley” prototype, built with the support and supervision of the experienced tradespeople. Back: Experienced tradesperson, Trevor Henderson; electrical apprentice, Jack Carter; diesel fitting apprentice, James Walker; fitter and turner apprentice, Bradley Bowden; boilermaking apprentice, Brayden Cassady; boilermaking apprentice, Sheldon Gilbert; diesel fitting apprentice, Joe Bond and experienced tradespeople, Tyson Pedersen and Grahame Piper. Front: Electrical apprentice, Sharee Yamashita; electrical apprentice, Callan Armstrong; diesel fitting apprentice, Matthew Kerwick; diesel fitting apprentice, James Gannon; electrical apprentice, Denica Russ; and fitter and turner apprentice, Karo Cardelli.

RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa has welcomed 12 new apprentices into its bauxite mining operation as a part of the 2013 apprenticeship intake. This year’s intake includes two apprentices who have progressed from Weipa’s school-based trainee-

ship programme and will develop future diesel fitters, fitter and turners, electricians and boilermakers. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Gareth Manderson said the apprenticeship programme – run in conjunction with Skill360 Australia - enables

young people to build expertise in their chosen field while gaining a nationally recognised trade certificate. “We have a fantastic calibre of applicants this year,” Mr Manderson said “For example apprentice diesel-

fitter Joe Bond has progressed from his local school-based traineeship and won ‘School-based Trainee and Apprentice of the Year’ at last year’s Skill360 awards,” Mr Manderson said. Skill360 senior employment coordinator David Morgan said,

“The apprentice induction program is a great opportunity for the new apprentices to gain trade specific skills in a controlled learning environment and embrace Rio Tinto values and behavioural expectations.”  continued page 2

Training combines safety with life-long skills  from page 1 So far, the apprentices have been undertaking an eight-week training induction, including a special project allowing each participant to build a “rolling tool trolley” under the supervision of experienced tradespeople. While learning how to build the trolley safely and correctly, the apprentices have acquired the new skills of welding and grinding, using hand and power tools. “This programme not only provides the participants with life-long skills and a trade, but also takes them on a safety journey that allows our safety culture to be embedded right at the start of their careers,” Mr Manderson said. “Having the experienced tradespeople on hand to provide guidance isn’t limited to their technical knowledge – these supervisors have been on site for a number of years and can ensure that the participants complete their apprenticeships with a high safety standard applied at the forefront of how they work

moving forward,” he said. Electrical apprentice Sharee Yamashita describes the project component of the training induction challenging, but says the task also comes with a sense of pride once the trolley starts taking shape. “The task of building a trolley individually seemed really overwhelming at first, however having the experienced tradespeople here to guide us through the process is invaluable,” Ms Yamashita said. “Their expertise and knowledge ensures our trolleys are constructed in the correct technical way but also the way we are working aligns with the company’s safety standards,” she said. “An extra bonus is that we are able to keep the trolleys after they are completed, so mine will be coming with me to the Electrical Workshop with me to store all my tools.” The new apprentices will be working on-site for the next three to four years, depending on their discipline.

It is hard to believe, but the Oberführer has been ruling Queensland for a whole year. It does not seem that long ago when the amiable Captain Bligh was guiding the ship of state. Plodding along in her friendly, vaguely incompetent way, and the worst we had to worry about was her hints that some privatisation might be a good thing. How things have changed! No more incompetence – that is simply not allowed

SENSE OF PRIDE: Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa electrical apprentice Sharee Yamashita with her completed tool trolley.

under the Oberführer’s iron rule. He picks his own senior officials, presents them with a copy of his best-selling memoir My Struggle, and then stands over them as they implement its no-nonsense provisions. We no longer feel that privatisation is the worst that can happen. We have just found out that it is going to happen, like it or not, and there are many more things to worry about. We also found out that the promise of stimulating the Queensland economy by slashing jobs was not just political window-dressing. The Oberführer means what he says, and the jobs continue to go. Queenslanders spend far too much money being sick, and are being put on a strict healthcare diet as services shrink or disappear. True, there have been a few of the Oberführer’s supporters letting the side

down, but that’s politicians for you. Some Aussies know in their blood that reaching a position of authority means you are free to find easy jobs for your wife, mistress, children, cousins, dog etc, even if things like that upset the Boss. Never mind, he has plenty of surplus supporters in Parliament so losing a few along the way does not amount to much. Here on Cape York, the Oberführer continues to be popular especially amongst our cranky pensioners who have no jobs to worry about. Go to any pub on the Cape and there will be a couple of them chortling over the latest cuts. Up here we love the smack of firm government, at least, we love it when some-one else’s bum is getting the punishment. Why should we worry about them down there? They don’t worry about us, after all.

WHAT’S ON...

Barrier Aviation requests urgent hearing By Mark Bousen

BARRIER Aviation has requested a hearing before the Administrative Appeals Tribunial as a matter of urgency following the cancellation of its operator’s licence earlier this month by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The airline’s managing director David Kilin says he is at a loss to understand the attitude of the regulatory body, and called for a review of the organisation. “We underwent two audits last year, and our licence was renewed in late November following those two audits. “Then on December 23, our licence is suspended.” “The audits were carried out in April and October/early November, yet our licence was suspended three weeks after our licence was renewed. “How can that be?” Mr Kilin said: “If you are reading this and you fly on light aircraft, I encourage you to contact your MP to call for an immediate overhaul of CASA, particularly

the laws that it is supposed to enforce. “It may be too late for Barrier Aviation due to the crippling cost of this ambush by CASA, but regional Australia depends on light aircraft. “If CASA continues to wipe out small charter aviation airlines, the public and politicians alike, are going to have to get used to driving long distances because there be will none left operating.” Mr Kilin continued: “After all of the work done by CASA last year and the granting of the Operator’s Licence to Barrier in late November, how could the serious alleged (and supposedly ingrained) cultural issues have suddenly appeared? “What could possibly have changed in three weeks? “If Barrier Aviation is such an unsafe airline, why have we got such an impressive safety record spanning over 20 years? We’ve never had a passenger or a crew member harmed on any of our flights (doing 15,000 flying hours per year).

“Why did CASA refuse to try to resolve any issues? Barrier Aviation have been 100 per cent cooperative every step of the way. “It appears clear that CASA’s objective was to close down Barrier Aviation from the start with no justified reason. Certainly there has been no attempt to resolve any alleged issues or to work with Barrier to get the airline operational again. “The question is why? And is this an abuse of power,” Mr Kilin said. In a media release last Wednesday, CASA said it cancelled Barrier Aviation’s air operator’s certificate on March 13 following a “comprehensive investigation of a wide range of critical safety issues relating to aircraft maintenance”. “The investigation found Barrier flew aircraft with major defects, and in some cases multiple major defects existed on the same aircraft for some time. “The operation of aircraft with serious defects created a serious and imminent risk to air safety.”

Entsch slams CASA’s handling of Barrier Aviation case By MARK BOUSEN

MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch says he will make the bureaucrat, he regards as primarily responsible for the demise of Barrier Aviation, accountable, “even if I have to wait to get into Government later this year”. And Mr Entsch also vowed to revamp the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of which he has been scathing since the airline’s licence was suspended on December 23 and cancelled on March 13. Mr Entsch has slammed CASA, identifying “vested interests” as playing a key role in the airline’s crisis. “It’s a bloody disgrace – there are people in CASA who should be sacked over this,” he said. “By the time the true facts behind all this come out, the victim (Barrier Aviation) will have been financially destroyed.” Mr Entsch said Barrier Aviation’s 20-year safety

record had been ignored in CASA’s “ambush” of the company and confirmed he had called the aviation authority to express his concerns. “CASA are on a ‘go slow’ campaign to send Barrier bankrupt. I have contacted them and tried to expedite the investigation process but they were not interested.” Mr Entsch said the suspension was causing a huge financial, emotional and personal toll, with 50 families reliant on the family-owned business. “As well as the employees who have worked for them for many years and never had a problem, there are also numerous local businesses that rely on Barrier – from Haggerstone Island Resort to Wongai Hotel on Horn Island and pilot training services in Cairns. “I personally have used Barrier on many occasions and they have been outstanding. “But, when the allegations come from a disgruntled

traces the problem as far back as May, 2011, almost two years ago when Barrier Aviaton lodged a formal complaint, through the director of CASA, that an Airworthiness Inspector (AWI) lacked the experience to fulfil his role and duties and lacked the ability to correctly interpret CASA regulations. “The matter was referred to the Industry Complaint Commissioner but, as of this time, Barrier has not heard a single word back from them,” Mr Entsch commented. “Given the seriousness of the matter, wouldn’t you think that while it is being investigated, CASA would have allocated another AWI? “But no action has been taken.” Mr Entsch said Barrier Aviation has had no opportunity whatsoever of being able to test any of the information they are charged with including these false allegations. “You do have to ask if there is a vendetta.”

Cape York food bowl proposed By Mark Roy

INDIGENOUS communities on Cape York will be financially supported by clearing native vegetation and developing agriculture, according to Member for Cook David Kempton. However, the Greens party is arguing the changes to landclearing laws are part of the myth of the ‘Asian food bowl bonanza’. The Greens have called for an immediate halt to changes to land-clearing laws that the Newman Government has flagged for Cape York and the Gulf region. Greens candidate for Kennedy Jenny Stirling said the “retrograde steps” from the LNP Government ignored the reality of the region, with its poor soils and extreme weather. “Land clearing laws have evolved over decades, but, true to form, Newman and the LNP care little for good management of environmental values,” Ms Stirling said. “The Cape is due for listing as a World Heritage site, which will attract more tourism and provide more jobs for the region than wild ideas that would damage these pristine areas. “The region has poor access to reliable transport services and no ports. “Moreover, it’s so far from markets that transporting produce will end up expensive to turn a profit.” Mr Kempton said that, while the LNP recognised the need for appropriate environmental safeguards, community growth and economic development were of equal importance. “Our amendments to the unworkable vegetation management laws and Wild Rivers Act will underpin the future financial security of the Cape,” Mr Kempton said. “We will provide opportunity for all indigenous communities and in fact all people of Cape

York to have a secure future. “We will do this by allowing the clearing of native vegetation for agriculture depending on land suitability, water availability and economic viability.” He said Federal Minister Tony Burke had concentrated on the environment while ignoring the community and economic future of the people of Cape York. “If there are areas in Cape York worthy of World Heritage listing then the easiest way to get those listings across the line is to ensure he has engaged all the people and not just a select few,” Mr Kempton said. “I challenge the federal minister to stop concentrating on his political future and to

come to Cape York and talk to up Far North Queensland to us about its sustainable future tree-clearing and intensive agriculture could put the most at all levels.” Ms Stirling said efforts pristine areas of the Reef at should be focused on making risk. “Increased agricultural existing farms more sustainable production can be achieved and productive. “The LNP are stuck in the much more economically and 1960s time-warp mentality with less environmental impact that has wrecked the Murray if we use existing agricultural River system through over areas more effectively. “Recent coral surveys show development as well as destroying sustainable agriculture in plummeting coral cover in the central and southern parts of those regions,” she said. Northern food bowl an ill-fated fantasy? WITH the recently leaked discussion paper by the Coalition reigniting old passions for a northern irrigated food bowl, Australia must again contemplate its vision for the north. Is this our chance to learn from what we’ve messed up down south? Or will we ignore the north’s stark environmental limits and saddle up the bulldozers regardless? The vision for a northern Australian food bowl is a curious aspect of our nation’s psyche. For the past century, the vast, largely intact savanna ecosystems across northern Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland have persisted in the minds of southern developers, politicians and other “visionaries”. Two centuries of agriculture in the south east, plagued with droughts, poor soil management, urban expansion and rising populations, has led to degradation of production systems. For many, the solution to this dilemma is to look north. However, as those that have lived and endured its history will understand, northern Australia seems more likely to reward those that have respected and understood its harsh climatic extremes and environmental limits.

New visions

In the Coalition discussion paper, the first “vision” is of “developing a food bowl…which could double Australia’s agricultural output”.

The trap of the north is created by its appearance as an untouched back-up plan to failures in southern landscape management.

In order for this to be achieved the Coalition will aim to “add flexibility to land use controls and reduce unnecessary regulation and approval processes”. The trap of the north is created by its appearance as an untouched back-up plan to failures in southern landscape management. The Institute of Public Affairs highlight this perspective, stating “the north remains underdeveloped and it is fantastic that the Coalition is looking to unleash its potential.” By contrast, the NT Environment Centre point out that “the

north is a graveyard for failed agricultural projects inspired by ‘visionary’ southern politicians”. If a coalition government does ride to victory in the 2013 election as predicted, it is likely a new battle will be played out on familiar ground. Will we consider and develop the north in a sustainable way that reflects and embraces the evolution in our 21st century knowledge of this country’s environmental limits? Or will we blaze on out across the savanna plains with bulldozers and irrigation pipes like the pioneer cowboys of yesterday striving to demonstrate our human ability to tame the harsh Australian landscape?

Ill-fated fantasy

A report by the NT Government in 2011 highlighted that while there is some opportunity for broadscale irrigation in the Katherine-Daly regions of the NT, a food bowl for the north is highly – perhaps naively – optimistic.

. . . there is no scientific evidence to support a food bowl vision for the north.

By Rob Law Researcher in carbon policy and science at University of Melbourne

Similar findings come from a sustainability report by the Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce (NALWT): there is no scientific evidence to support a food bowl vision for the north. The landscape is limited by poor soils, water availability and harsh climatic conditions. On top of the existing environmental limits to agricultural development, climate change is likely to pose further challenges for northern Australia. The north can expect changing rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, and increased likelihood of extreme climatic events such as cyclones and higher intensity wildfires. Such changes will have a detrimental impact on the pastoral industry and reduce livestock carrying capacity. As such, climate change adaptation is critical for land use planning in the north over the coming decades. From a social perspective, agricultural and urban development that erodes natural capital is likely to have a significant negative impact on Indigenous people. Much of the recent suc-

Coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, cakes, pies and sausage rolls are all available for purchase. cesses in Indigenous economic development have related to land management and tourism. It is important that land-use planning in northern Australia promotes conservation in order to continue to “close the gap” between Indigenous and nonIndigenous economic and social well-being. The recent election commitment by the WA liberal party to create the largest national park in the Kimberley region is an encouraging move for conservative politics. Expanding agriculture in the north will require extensive clearing of existing savanna woodlands, producing large volumes of greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates of clearing savanna woodlands range from 140 to 220 tonnes of CO2 per hectare. Such development would be counterproductive to the NT Climate Change Policy of becoming a low land-clearing jurisdiction. Similarly, such an approach would also contradict policy efforts by the Coalition’s Direct Action Plan to reduce Australia’s emissions through more effective land management. So what should a vision for northern Australia look like? A good start is to develop policy from a position of mutual respect of the environment and people that live there. As the NALWT report on sustainable development of northern Australia nicely puts it, good policy will demonstrate: Respect for the rights and interests of the Indigenous Peoples of the north. Respect for the environment. Respect for the critical role that landholders have in caring for country. Respect for Indigenous and western knowledge. Respect for the communities of the north and the need to empower them to create opportunities for their own future. Critically, a future for the north should demonstrate that we have learnt from the mistakes and failures of the past. While visions of what this looks like will, and should be, contested a vision for a food bowl should be finally laid to rest.

Vessel abandonment, fire, flooding, medical and regulations were just some of the challenges to be dealt with if they are to continue for another three years as active rescue vessel skippers. Weipa skippers to complete the reaccreditation were Cath Roberts, Shane Smith, Brendon Fay, Krys Roberts, Crazy Pete, Sean Rouse, Jacinta Smith, and Andy Fraser. Crazy said that although VMR trains crews who wish to go through to full commercial coxswain, marine tickets that members will always hold, they are still required to be refreshed regularly and to be kept up to date with the latest technology and search and rescue training. “It is vital that we continue to attract crews as our regular numbers are always low,” Crazy Pete said.

Weipa VMR’s Rescue One: cleaned, fueled and ready to go again.

“VMR has only three paid positions in Queensland, all based in Brisbane, with all other levels in the organisation filled by volunteers.” Robert Brock believes VMR has the right mix of options for those who just want to do something for their community or are wishing to gain some higher marine qualifications at VMR courses. “I was impressed with the high standard of the skippers tested here in Weipa,” Robert said. Robert will return to Weipa in the next

few months to oversee another commercial coxswains course and run more workshops for Weipa’s skippers and crews. At a dinner held on Sunday night, Robert told the crews that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will be taking over from Maritime Safety Queensland in overseeing all maritime training within Australia by 2013. AMSA is the federal department responsible for marine rescue operations. It is responsible for covering over 53 million square kilometres of the Pacific, Indian and southern oceans.

Weipa town water upgrade project update LAST week, a new pipe was installed along Central Avenue as a part of the Weipa town water system delivery upgrade project, which required a water outage. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Gareth Manderson said the outage schedule was modified twice before the works, due to weather delays, and thanked the community for their patience and cooperation.

“Linking the new pipe into the existing infrastructure progressed throughout the night on Wednesday, March 20,” Mr Manderson said, “With the concrete taking longer than expected to set the outage overran the scheduled finishing time. “We understand that this work directly affects residents and businesses. However, we are committed to completing this work with minimal impact, which is why the

outage was scheduled for the early hours of the morning. “I would also like to thank residents for remaining safe and staying clear of the machinery and piping along Central Avenue, where upgrade works to town water are currently being carried out.” The water system delivery upgrade project is a joint initiative with the Weipa Town Authority, and will ensure the town’s water systems are

equipped to handle current and future water demand. This network upgrade will be completed in stages throughout the year. Thank you from Weipa Gymnastics Club A big thank you to Woolworths for their donation to our Easter Raffle, and to everyone who purchased tickets. The winners were Bec Healy and Colin. Funds raised from the raffle will go towards the ongoing running costs of the club and training for our coaches, Weipa Gymnastics Committee The Port Douglas fundraiser for ex-Weipa residents Bomber (Bruce) and Nette Brown was an outstanding success and was well supported by the Weipa community.

Thank you, Weipa people TO the people of Weipa we would like to say a big thank you for the contributions you made to the fundraiser held in Port Douglas on March 8, which was a resounding success. To all those who sent their best wishes and kind thoughts, we also thank you. A huge thank you to our friends at the Weipa Caravan Park who organised and signed a beautiful card, helped us pack-up to relocate and arrange the safe delivery of our caravan – you will aways hold a special place in our hearts.

Bomber is coping well after completing his radiation treatment, with chemotherapy to begin later. Due to the success of the fundraiser we are now able to return to our home town Yack (Yackandandah) to see family and friends, and even attend our first AFL Anzac Day football match in Melbourne (GO BOMBERS). We were only in Weipa for eight months but we enjoyed our time there immensely and met and worked with some lovely, caring people. Once again we would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God bless and take care. Bomber and Nette Brown

Books With No Borders... WEIPA’S OWN CHARITY!

Beautiful young life cut tragically short

Books With No Borders is a 100% non-profit charity organisation started in Weipa. Our aim is to assist children in Cambodia by providing them with an education that empowers them to break the poverty cycle they and their families are trapped in. We have established orphanages in Cambodia and funds raised through donations to Books With No Borders pay for underprivileged children and young adults to attend private schools and universities where they receive an education that will ensure a brighter future for them. We thank you all for your continued support of this charity!

WEStErN Cape College teachers tony Fay and Phil Van heusden are trying to come to terms with the loss of their daughter Calliope Fay-Van heusden, whose life was tragically cut short following a fatal head-on collision outside Mackay on Sunday, March 17. Known as Poppi, the 23-year old had recently commenced a sociology degree at a Mackay university, where she had moved to be closer to partner Scott Hunter. Mr Van Heusden said Poppi wanted to be a social worker. “She was such a caring, compassionate person. All she wanted to do was help people and social work would have been perfect for her.” Only the week before the devastating accident Tony Fay had secretly arranged to fly Poppi to Weipa to attend a surprise birthday party for Mr Van Heusden.

“The party was held at the Albatross Bay Resort and I was delighted when Poppi appeared among the friends who had gathered to celebrate my birthday,” Mr Van Heusden said. “It was the most wonderful surprise to see my beautiful daughter there and it became the happiest day of my life.” Mr Van Heusden said people were flying in from across the country to attend Poppi’s funeral. “Poppi was such a kind, beautiful person and she touched so many lives. Everyone who met her said she was so bright and bubbly – she just made such an impression on people.” Western Cape College principal Garry Hutchinson said the College community were terribly upset by the tragic news and had held a minute’s silence in honour of Poppi’s life, and offered their condolences to the family.

CHAMBER of COMMERCE

with Yvette Carter WCCC Administration & Project Officer

HELLO to one and all for another month. As part of ongoing support from the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce to its members, the Chamber organised a networking and information evening on Thursday, March 7 at the Albatross Bay Hotel. This evening also included a question and answer time with Warren Entsch which led to some lengthy and robust discussion. The topics of conversation addressed issues surrounding and effecting local businesses and residents of Weipa and the Cape. The night was generously hosted by Carpentaria Contracting. The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce works constantly and continually to promote and support its members. The aforementioned evening is only one way in which this support is exercised and delivered. To network with other business houses in and around the Cape is invaluable to industry and for the sustainability of this industry – your industry, so become a member of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce and reap the many benefits afforded to you and your business through the Chamber on a local level. Another avenue in which the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce supports industry in Weipa and the Cape can be seen through the role it plays with the Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA). The Chamber is one

TRIBAL BIBLE THE Devil wanted Jesus dead, the big shot Jewish leaders wanted Jesus dead, and his Father wanted him to die too but for a whole different reason, to bring his Master Plan of salvation for the world to it’s climax! The Lord had to die and be resurrected again by the power of the Holy Spirit to bring hope for those who put their trust in Jesus. But only the Roman boss had the power to put people to death, so the chief priests had to convince Pilate of some political crime. So Jesus was cunningly accused as King of the Jews, a death sentence, when Caesar demands he only was King. (Matt 27 v 11; 42).

of the signatory bodies promoting and supporting the RPA’s initiatives and acknowledges the positive outcomes achieved thus far for community and local business. Some of these projects are ongoing or in the process of occurring and are as follows e.g. ‘QuickSmart’, the Napranum Arts Project, Driver’s Licensing and the upcoming Mentors attached to the Chamber for a year to support the Indigenous Work Skills Program. Now all the Program needs is your commitment to employing local Indigenous people with support for doing that. Have a look at the RPA’s poster appearing around the traps. The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce is working for you, your business and future sustainability within the region through training and employment. For further information on this, or other related areas of interest, please telephone Yvette (0429 062 449). The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce wishes everyone a happy and safe Easter. Enjoy your time with family and friends and travel safely should you be moving about on our roads – oh, and enjoy your Easter eggs! – Yvette Carter, Project Officer, Western Cape Chamber of Commerce.

By Rev. Michael Connolly

When Jesus realised that the Father wanted him to die on those two pieces of rough crossed sticks, the Cross as we know it today, make no mistake about it, he was tempted greatly to use his power as God’s Son to rescue himself. Let’s look at a couple of those points in time when he showed that his love for the Father and for the world caused him to back away from using his enormous powers to free himself from the Jewish leaders and the Roman authorities. When Peter cut off the ear of one of the chief priest’s slave the Lord said, “Put your sword back in its place, all who take the sword will die by the sword. Don’t you know that I could call on my Father for help, and

at once he would send me more than twelve armies of angels? But in that case, how could the scriptures come true which say that this is what must happen?” (Matt 26 vs 52-54). Then when he realised his debating skills could cause his release he kept his mouth shut. (Mark Ch 14 v 60 ). When the Lord felt Pilate might release him, he said words that inflamed the chief priests and put pressure on Pilate not to free him so readily, putting God’s plan for him back on track. (Mark Ch 14 v 61-65). As we celebrate Good Friday think of what the Lord did to ensure that he would not escape the Cross!

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

A friend has more serious things to worry about than you. This week you must give them all the support you can. Romance. The Moon/Venus Midpoint will give your love-life the major boost it needs at this moment. You may not have noticed that things have become routine.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

Don’t be angry with yourself for what happened recently. You were much less to blame than you realise. Forgive and move on! Romance. A kind comment will cheer up the person concerned and will not go unrewarded. Make sure you really mean what you say!

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

Don’t let people talk for hours and waste your time. You have some important things to do early this week. Get on with it! Romance. The movement of the Moon/ Vesta Midpoint through your sign should make you a little more sympathetic to your partner’s recent concerns.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

A certain member of your family is being a little difficult at the moment. You may be unsure what to do. A clear answer will not come until next week. Romance. Somebody who is concerned for your well-being will help to cheer you up. Cry on their shoulder if you need.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

An evening spent enjoying yourself will be well-spent. You need the chance to unwind, and should not feel guilty about taking things easy. Romance. Be careful not to go overboard this week. You may overreact to events, but more than anything you are probably exhausted.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

A recent increase in your workload may be easier to cope with than you expect. You will soon find a way to reduce it! Don’t take on any more projects. Romance. A new person in your life could be having a much stronger effect on you than you realise. Be open to this change!

FINDWORD No. 141 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

A very close friendship will give you muchneeded support. You need an extra boost of confidence at the moment and this person knows exactly how to reassure you. Romance. Someone you don’t know very well could be a little nosy. Try not to give away too many secrets.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Your emotions will be a little wilder than normal. Don’t do anything rash - you may not feel the same way later in the week. Romance. You may be approached by a very unusual person. Don’t make any premature judgements about them or their intentions. Just listen!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

An exciting dream may come true sooner than you think. Don’t expect things to happen in exactly the same way in real life, however. Romance. Good communications will be essential for your relationship this week. Provide a quiet environment where you can talk.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

You would be surprised if you knew how much your friends respect your views. They will take what you say quite seriously. Be sure to listen to them as well. Romance. A small misunderstanding could turn into a major issue if you are not careful. Be clear when you speak.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas THE season is underway and so far it has been a mixed reaction from the punters about this split round format. The friday night opener from Adelaide was an unpopular choice for many though it looked to be a full house of excited Crows fans at football park. Hot favourites Adelaide started on fire but by halftime the Bombers were back in the match. Essendon soon showed that their off-season drugs scandal isn’t going to hinder their progress early this year by overpowering the Crows in the second half. The Crows, in dropping their first game of the season at their home fortress could be showing signs of missing star power-forward Kurt Tippett, who departed at the end of last season for the Swans. Crows forward Taylor Walker’s mullet, despite its boganly impressiveness, just doesn’t appear to give him the same samsom-like powers of the departed Tippett. The Bombers were impressive and were led from the front by Brownlow Medallist Jobe Watson. Ex-Saint Brendan Goddard looks to be a useful off-season buy for the red and black too. Saturday night continued the nightmare for tipsters with the West Australian Derby between the Eagles and Dockers. This great rivalry did not disappoint either with the underdog Dockers powering home to victory. Both teams should play finals this year and the rivalry spilled over as usual with spiteful sparks flying several times. Freo star Mathew Pavlich spent the night in hospital after splitting his finger webbing but has been cleared of possible fractures to his fingers and hand. Pavlich was also reported for charging an Eagles player. He looked to drop off intensity and brace himself rather than follow through with the impact, so he may yet get off or receive a reduced sentence. Freo’s serial pest Hayden Ballantyne was again in the thick of it and was involved in an off the ball incident downing Scott Selwood. The Eagles were not at their best and were outplayed by a confident Fremantle who dominated the ruck even without their star giant Aaron Sandilands. The split round continues this weekend with the remainder of round one matches. The MCG sees Carlton face off against rivals Richmond. The Blues should enter this as favourites but with both teams suffering inconsistent form in recent years it really could be anyone’s match. If jumping Jack Riewoldt can get up and about at the Punt Road end in front of his black and gold army, the Tigers could well come home the stronger and make it a great spectacle. The NAB cup final loss to the Lions may have been the wakeup call the Blues needed after starting strongly this pre-season under new coach Mick Malthouse. What an awesome game to lead into our Easter break! My heart is with Richmond but the Blues should get up in this one. Saturday sees three games. The Bulldogs should easily be accounted for by the in-form Lions while the Swans will massacre GWS in the Sydney rivalry. The Suns are at home on the coast and host St Kilda. Saints will be favourites but are not the team

they used to be. The improving Suns may well give them a run for their money. St Kilda, maybe just! On Sunday Melbourne take on Port Adelaide. With it too early for snow in the Australian Alps the Demons may actually get some of their wine sipping ski set supporters to a game. Anyone’s match, but I think the Demons in a close one. The battle of the stripes takes place also on sunday with the Pies tackling North Melbourne. Collingwood should take the points in this all Melbourne affair. The best has been kept for last in this split round one. The Hawks and Cats do battle on Easter Monday in what could be yet another classic like those in recent years. Hawthorn for me, but it is anyone’s call. That’s the wrap for round one. Footy is back! Have a happy and safe Easter and CARN’ THE SUNS…! Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Spilla

Storm and Rabbitohs the early pace setters WOW! We are already into round three of the NRL and the footy just gets more exciting every week. Some teams have been disappointing to say the least while the Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs seem to be the early front runners to lift the holy grail at the season’s end. Round three did show some interesting results and it all started on Thursday night by the Storm just overcoming the Bulldogs in a thriller. Friday night footy saw the Tigers thrash a dismal Eels team. Super Saturday was very interesting with the Titans beating heavyweights the Sea Eagles in a close one, and the Roosters smashing the Broncos with a strong 8-0 win - keeping the Broncos scoreless was a great effort. Sunday featured three games with Warriors and Sharks doing battle and the Sharks welcomed back there coach Shane Flanagan with a solid win. The Raiders added more insult to the Dragons’ poor start to the season by putting in a dominant display, while the Rabbitohs were just simply too big, strong and fast for a very much-improved Panthers outfit. Monday night footy saw the Knights hand out a footballing lesson to my Cowboys, but I’m sure we will bounce back sooner rather than later. We have a great round of footy action up for the Easter weekend and we will see the Sea Eagles looking for redemption taking on the Tigers on Thursday night. Good Friday will feature two games with the battle of Sydney taking place, as competition contenders the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs go to war. The other game will see the Storm up against the slow-starters the Brisbane Broncos. Saturday will have only one game with a local derby of the southern beaches with the Dragons and Sharks doing battle. Easter Sunday will have two ripper games with the Knights and Raiders looking for back-to-back wins, and the Titans and Panthers doing battle. The action only gets better on Monday with the Cowboys and Warriors looking for a win and the Roosters and The Eels doing battle once again. The Northern Pride have started off their season in style with two good wins and sit nicely on top of the table in the Queensland Cup and new coach Jason Demetriou is very happy how the talented squad is progressing and is very confident the boys will have a very successful season. Spillas tips: Tigers, Bulldogs, Storm, Sharks, Knights, Panthers, Cowboys, Roosters.

The wacky, yet wonderful world of sport... BEER CAN REGATTA FOR nearly 40 years the people of Darwin have taken recyling to a new level, using their empty beer cans to construct boats to compete in the annual Beer Can Regatta. Although beer cans were the original building material, the organisers of the event now promote responsible drinking and a family-friendly event so all types of drink cans are allowed in construction. The “boats” are raced from Mindil Beach out to a buoy and back, powered by human paddlers. The annual events attract tens of thousands of spectators, and include beach events for all ages, with proceeds from the day going to charity.

STRAW RACING the Oxenhope Straw Race is held every summer in the Pennine village of Oxenhope, near Keighley, UK. The race was started by two men who made a bet about racing from one pub to the next carrying a bale of straw. As often the case, an offhand remark in a pub becomes a major event. Competitors race in teams of two (male, female or mixed). The start is at the Waggon & Horses Inn. From there it is approximately 1.5km to the Bay Horse Inn where a bale of straw is picked up. From there the course heads along 2.5km up a gentle hill, via the Social Club, the Lamb Inn and the former Shoulder of Mutton, to the finish at the Dog & Gun. A pint of beer is drunk by teams at each stop. There are concessions for female competitors. Females may carry carry half bales if they wish, and only a half-pint of beer has to be drunk by female teams.

Soccer spirits not dampened by rain Photos by Denis Sullivan

Wet weather didn’t deter local soccer players who kicked the slippery ball around damp fields for a fun afternoon of awesome soccer in the final week of trial games. Weipa soccer will now break for the school holidays with the next game played on Saturday, April 20 which will be the first of the six weeks of competition games. Teams will be advised and jerseys handed out. It is extremely important that players arrive 30 minutes prior to their game start time to allow time for jerseys and sign-on kits (ball, bag and water bottle) to be handed out. A small number of families have outstanding fees which must be paid by April 20. Still waiting final confirmation but we hope to be holding a coaching clinic on the weekend of April 20, on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Specialists from Brisbane will be in town to coach players and take parents through a grass roots coaching clinic which helps parent to assist the referees in leading the games, especially for the younger divisions. There will also be a session for referees (current and interested). Again an enormous thank you to the referees and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Please offer your support to help lead a game in the younger divisions. Coaching for Teens and Titans is on this Wednesday 5pm at the oval and then breaks for the school holidays and is back on again from Wednesday, April 17 at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes will start in Term 2 and the time will be advised via email. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Soft brim hats only please – no caps or peaks. ‘Til next time, keep strikin’.

LAST weekend was the weekend that 7,579,000 AFL supporters (or 40 per cent of the Australian population aged 14-plus) had been waiting for – the start of the official 2013 AFL season. To kick-off the next seven months of thrills, spills, goals and glory, Roy Morgan Research took a look at footy supporters across the country to reveal what makes them tick. Nobody would be surprised to learn that Australia’s largest concentration of footy fans (38 per cent) can be found in Victoria, the AFL’s historic heartland. In fact, a hefty 61 per cent of all Victorians support an AFL team, in contrast to 24 per cent of people in New South Wales and 28 per cent of Queenslanders. Men comprise the majority (55 per cent) of all supporters. AFL supporters don’t just follow the footy: sport is a way of life for them. Not only are they 22 per cent more likely than the average Australian to have played a sport in any given three-month period, they’re 63 per cent likelier to have attended a professional sports event. Of all the teams, the Richmond Tigers have the highest proportion of fans who play sport themselves, while more Hawthorn Hawks supporters attend sporting events than those of any other team. As any AFL supporter knows, a match’s outcome depends on more than just talent and teamwork: Lady Luck also plays a part. Could this explain why, in any given three-month period, footy fans are: • 45 per cent likelier than the average Australian to have placed a bet • 49 per cent more likely to have gone to the races • 24 per cent likelier to have visited a casino. A larger proportion of North Melbourne Kangaroos and Carlton Blues supporters go to the racetrack than followers of any other team. Fans of the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers, on the other hand, are more partial to trying their luck in casinos. When it comes to eating out and ordering in, AFL supporters are consistently more likely to do both than the rest of the population. In any given three-month period, the typical footy fan is: • 9 per cent likelier to have dined at a licensed restaurant • 18 per cent likelier to have had a pub meal • 12 per cent likelier to have eaten at a BYO restaurant • 20 per cent likelier to have gone to the pub for a drink. Melbourne Demons fans are most likely to dine at licensed restaurants; whereas Collingwood Magpies supporters reveal a marked preference for fast-food joints.

JT’s laugh now a ring and text tone The most famous laugh in Australian sport can now be enjoyed by everyone. North Queensland Toyota Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston has released his trademark laugh as a ring tone and a text tone – and both can be downloaded for free. The launch coincided with JT’s decision to re-sign with the Cowboys until the end of the 2017 season. “Hopefully this puts smiles on everyone’s faces leading into the weekend,” JT said. “I know my laugh is a bit different but it’s who I am and I’m happy to share it if it gives everyone a laugh. “There’s been plenty of requests over the last couple of years to have it as a ring tone and we’re going to keep it free to download. “No doubt it’ll probably get annoying after a while, so I apologise in advance to those who have to put up with it.” JT has also entered cyberspace

 from page 20 There was another crew fishing around Westminster using soft plastics and they did alright on the Fingermark. There have been some nice fish out on the leads taking baits of Squid and Pilchards. While you’re anchored put a floater out or a livie for a chance of a Mackerel but you could also get sharked. In the rivers things are starting to hot up with Barra taking lures and live bait, but the tides have to be right or they won’t play. I fished with Victor Stupar on Thursday for seven Barra and a couple of Blue Salmon all falling to live Mullet. Rocky Point has been holding some good quantities of Prawns but size is down, and at dawn and dusk there are a few Grunter and small Barra taking lures and baits. Further up the river at the Mission River bridge the usual variety of Queenies, Trevally and Barra taking live bait, but soft plastics have been taking the odd fish. The mouth of the Waldron has been holding small Spotted Mackerel and Queenfish on the run-out tide. I had a small report from Bianca from Eclipse charters who at the moment is based up at Mapoon with their clients getting lots of Barra in the Jackson River. Hopefully I will get weekly reports from up that way as well. Until next week, smooth seas, slight breezes and tight lines. – Cheers, China

Good fish caught despite wet weather Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com

IT’S been a big change from last week’s fine weather – more rain than you can poke a stick at – but there have been some good fish caught just the same. Aaron Singleton celebrated a birthday with some of his friends in his dad’s boat down the coast, using it as a mother ship and fishing out of a tinnie and taking turns to fish out of it. The boys caught some impressive fish with Barra, Queenies over a metre, Spotted Mackerel, and Trevally. The boys were fishing rock structures along the southern beaches and just flicking lures at the rocks to compile their captures. I had a fish with Stuart McKinnon on one of the southern reefs and we hit the jackpot with Fingermark and Tuskies but we were plagued by some very big Sharks up to 200 kilos taking our hooked fish. We also got a small Spotted Mackerel and there were schools of Tuna working over the numerous bait schools that were on the reefs. The seas were as flat as a pancake but around lunch time the rain set in so we called it quits and headed home. I believe there were couple of Sails hooked but not landed, but I have not been able to confirm this.  continued page 19
