Trunding Creek croc spotted

This crocodile was spotted on the western bank of Trunding Creek on Saturday morning by Western Cape Bulletin reader David Robinson. By Giembra Busmer

FOLLOWING last week’s story regarding the recent fatal crocodile attack on a 14-month old dog at Trunding Creek, Western Cape Bulletin reader, David Robinson sent the photo above to our office. David said the picture was taken on Saturday morning, June 16, 2012 at 11.30am at the mouth of Trund-

ing Creek, about 100 metres from the Albatross Hotel. He estimated the crocodile to be between 2.6 and 2.9 metres in length. Trunding Creek has come under the spotlight since fisherman Todd Bairstow was attacked by a crocodile while fishing on the banks of the creek in March 2011. A three-metre estuarine crocodile

was removed from the creek following the attack, however it appears another has taken up residence in what appears to be prime croc real estate. In December last year quad riders were given a nasty surprise when they road out of the bush towards the creek to be greeted by a large crocodile.

The Western Cape Bulletin has also received several reports of “near misses” with dogs who venture too close to the creek’s edge (see page 2 - we would like to advise that the photo on page 2 is graphic). A new crocodile warning sign was erected on the western bank of Trunding Creek this week.

Visitors and locals are reminded to avoid areas where large crocodiles or their nests have been seen and to keep well back from the water’s edge. Crocodile incidents should be reported to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service hotline on 1300 130 372 or Weipa Police on 4090 6000.

Lucky dog survives croc attack

This dog had a lucky escape following a recent altercation with a crocodile at Trunding Creek.

A WESTERN Cape Bulletin reader sent us the photo at left of his dog who, luckily, survived the injuries she sustained from a crocodile attack at Trunding Creek recently. The reader said his two dogs took a stroll to the mouth of the creek when the attack occurred. Witnesses said one of the dogs managed to avoid the croc by jumping over its mouth, however the other one was not so lucky, the croc inflicting a large gash on her side. The injured dog made it half-way home before collapsing on the side of the road and the owner was notified. After receiving three staples and three stitches to the eight-inch gash in her side the dog made a full recovery.

Minister for School Education Peter Garrett this week announced the first round of schools to take part in the Indigenous Rangers Cadetship (IRC) pilot, part of the Building Australia’s Future Workforce strategy. “I’ve been very keen to see this happen, as Indigenous Ranger Cadetships are about giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from regional and remote communities the skills they need to become rangers in their local area,” Mr Garrett said. “This heralds an exciting new era in providing students with the opportunity to work on country, as rangers and in associated roles in natural resource management. “I have seen firsthand the good work being done by Indigenous Rangers across their land and sea country, in

Monitoring Gulf Spanish Mackerel By Giembra Busmer

FOR the past six years Fisheries Queensland (now part of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) has been present at the Weipa Fishing Classic collecting data on Spanish Mackerel, and this year was no different. Fisheries Queensland has developed tools to monitor fish stocks including biological monitoring, fisheries observers and commercial fisher log books. The monitoring data generated is then used to assess the fishery. Spanish Mackerel in the Gulf of Carpentaria are monitored from south of the 120 line running through Mapoon to the Northern Territory border. Fisheries technician, Luke Pavich, said the Weipa Fishing Classic offered a valuable opportunity to collect data on the species. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us and we value the co-operation of the Weipa Fishing Classic and the fishers who bring fish to us throughout the event,� Mr Pavich said. This year’s Classic yielded more Spanish Mackerel than the previous two years, with 14 fish (eight female, three male and three unknown) going under the knife for biological monitoring. Biological monitoring focuses on collecting length, sex and age data from commercial and recreational catches. “We collect the otolith or ‘ear bone’ from the fish at the Classic and preserve it to be examined at a later date,� Mr Pavich said. Much like counting growth rings in trees, the age of many fish (including Spanish Mackerel) can be estimated by examining its otolith under a microscope. As the fish gets older, calcium carbonate builds up on the otolith. Seasonal variations in fish growth cause changes in the density of the calcium carbonate deposits, displaying an annual

pattern of bands from which an estimate of age is attained. Spanish Mackerel in the Gulf of Carpentaria are a different genetic stock to that sampled on the east coast of Queensland. In 2007 Fisheries Queensland expanded the biological monitoring of Spanish Mackerel to include the Gulf fishery. During the 2011 evaluation of the stock status of Queensland’s fisheries resources, Gulf Spanish Mackerel was assessed as ‘uncertain’. The time-series of length and age data collected by the program will improve the certainty in the sustainability of the fishery. These data are currently being used for the 2012 assessment. The cooperation of recreational and commercial fishers and charter operators enables fisheries monitoring programs to work and have quality data available for the assessment of the fisheries. In addition to fishing tournaments, recreational catches are sampled through boat ramp surveys, charter operators, and frames donated by anglers in the Keen Angler Program. The Coen Certificate in Tourism graduates are looking forward to building their own tourism-based businesses in the Coen area.

ON Friday June 8, 12 proud Indigenous job seekers from Coen, celebrated their graduation from a nationally accredited Certificatelevel course in tourism offered by Jobfind Centres Australia. Funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Queensland Government Department of Education, Training and Employment under the Productivity Places Program, the five week-course was delivered by Jobfind in partnership with local tourism training specialists, ‘Pathways to the Future’ – a representative of the Career Training Institute of Australia (CTIA). Jobfind Centres Australia delivers a range of employment and training programs in Coen, including both the Australian Government’s Job Services Australia (JSA) and Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP). Staff and participants from across these programs within Jobfind came together to ensure the success of this training initiative and to increase the outcomes available to the Coen community. “With all road traffic to Weipa and the Northern Peninsula Area driving

through Coen, our Indigenous community has become quite a tourism gateway�, said Marty Chambers, manager of Jobfind CDEP in Coen. “To take advantage of this traffic and increase the community’s tourism potential and employment opportunities, Jobfind has partnered with local Aboriginal corporation, Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation – who run the local Homestead Guest House in Coen.� The completion of the course now also paves the way for graduates to look ahead and build their own tourism-based businesses in the Coen area. “The course has created a real air of excitement in Coen�, said Ross Furnari, area manager for Jobfind’s Cape York Job Services Australia operations. “It’s been fantastic to see the great deal of support these course participants have received from right across the whole community. FOR 25 years people have been donning red noses on the last Friday in June to raise money for SIDS and Kids, and this year the Weipa Bowls Club is hosting a Red Nose Day. Patrons are encouraged to come to the club on Friday, June 29 and purchase a red nose for $2. Once you have donned your red nose $1 from every food or beverage purchase you make at the club on the day will go to SIDS and Kids. “It’s a great chance to be silly for a really serious cause,� Weipa Bowls Club general manager Nick Prus said. “The fundraising starts at 10am and runs all day until closing time, but you must be wearing your red nose to make the donation.� Red Nose Day is the major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids, and funds raised assist in providing vital services and programs to the Australian community.

POLICE were called to an EPIRB activation in Weipa at about 10.45am Tuesday, June 12. Two people on board a six-mere Hooker dinghy had been drifting off shore near the Skardon River, north of Weipa for about one hour due to engine failure. Weipa Police commenced a search and rescue and located the vessel and occupants at about 12.10pm in good condition and towed them back to the Weipa boat ramp. The vessel was fully kitted with all safety equipment on board, along with ample food and water. With the current good weather conditions, ‘boaties’ are reminded to ensure their vessels are properly serviced, they have ample supplies, all safety equipment including current 406 EPIRB on board, as well as registering their plans with local authorities.

Officer/teachers served with notices to appear, Kowanyama A POLICE officer and two teachers have been served with notices to appear for possession of liquor in a restricted place. This relates to the alleged consumption of liquor on the evening of June 14 on a beach about 20km from Kowanyama, in an alcohol management plan area. The 32-year-old male senior constable from Townsville was off-duty at the time and does not work in the local area. Two male teachers, aged 27 and 32, are both from far north Queensland and were also off-duty at the time. The matter has been listed for the Kowanyama Magistrates Court on July 18.

Three Sistas loan to improve housing and support services CAIRNS-BASED social enterprise, Three Sistas will receive a $450,000 loan to turn a former tourism business into a low-cost accommodation service to support people in Cairns and Indigenous people from Cape York who travel to Cairns for health services. Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis said this is the first loan delivered through the Australian Government’s Social Enterprise Development and Investment Funds (SEDIF) by the fund manager, Social Enterprise Finance Australia (SEFA). “This loan will allow Three Sistas to grow their housing and support services in Cairns to better meet the needs of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the region,” Ms Ellis said. Three Sistas will work with Apunipima Cape York Health Council to ensure clients from Cape York have access to affordable accommodation and transport when in Cairns, as well as offering training and work experience to young people in the region as part of the refurbishment of the site.

Better Start for Children with Disability & Helping Children with Autism Early Intervention Service Provider Panels Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) has established panels of early intervention service providers to deliver evidence based services to eligible children as part of the Helping Children with Autism (HCWA) package and the Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) initiative. The purpose of the panels is to improve access to targeted and appropriate early intervention services for eligible children. FaHCSIA is now seeking further applications from eligible organisations and sole providers who wish to apply for membership of one or both panels. Allied health professionals who are qualified and experienced in the disciplines of audiology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, orthoptics, physiotherapy or psychology are invited to apply for membership of the Better Start Panel as sole providers. Multidisciplinary early intervention services and consortia which include or can demonstrate a professional relationship with an allied health professional from the listed disciplines are also encouraged to apply. Too far to walk I AM amazed by the number of people, many of them locals, who cannot walk the extra three car parking spaces to put their Woolworths trolley into the trolley-parking bay. Most of you have the energy to push the empty trolley as far as the crossing blocking it up so people in wheelchairs, mums with prams and pedestrians cannot negotiate their way through. I am appalled that you think that this is someone else’s problem and not yours. If you cannot be bothered with pushing the trolley the extra three bays to their parking station, maybe try leaving the trolley inside at the supermarket and carry the bags out yourself. Note the words “trolleyparking bay�; this is for trolleys to park in, like a car-parking bay is for cars to park in. As we all know the businesses in town have enough trouble getting staff, so let’s not make them walk all over the place collecting the trolleys that you are too lazy to park in the correct area, and

NATIONAL acts Last Kinection and Reggage Bliss are confirmed to perform at this year’s NAIDOC celebrations alongside local dancers from Mapoon, Weipa, and Napranum. Planning for this year ’s NAIDOC week celebrations is full steam ahead, with events being held in the first week of July in Napranum, Mapoon, and Weipa. NAIDOC week committee member, Bettina Rosser, said the success from last year has motivated them to make the celebrations even bigger. “This year we are really showcasing our local talent, in the way of visual arts, music, dance and culture, during the week long celebrations,� Bettina said. The Western Cape NAIDOC celebrations will run from Sunday 1 July through to Friday 6 July. “The week will kick off on Sunday with an opening ceremony in Napranum, and the re-enactment of ‘Coming of the Light’,� Bettina said.

“The celebrations will continue on Monday with a float procession and arts and crafts stalls, kid’s activities, and live entertainment. On Wednesday, the celebrations move to Mapoon where local indigenous and non-indigenous artists will showcase their work and games for all to play.� In keeping line with national NADOIC theme - Spirit of The Tent Embassy 40 Years on - the Western Cape Communities Trust is hosting an Elders Luncheon where they will be honoured for their achievements. The young people will celebrate with the 2012 Youth NAIDOC Ball on Thursday held at the Heritage Resort. The celebrations then conclude in Weipa, with a closing ceremony held at the Western Cape College grounds. National acts Last Kinection and Reggage Bliss will perform at the closing ceremony. There will also be performances from local band, Rising Tide, solo artist Norah Bagiri and guest

performance by the Night Owls. “The dancing was a big hit at last year’s closing ceremony and we are fortunate to have it again with local dancing groups from all three communities,� Bettina said. NAIDOC committee member, Bianca Graham, said the committee have worked hard to ensure all ages are catered for during NAIDOC week. All events are free to attend and everyone is invited and encouraged to come along. Full times and venues for NAIDOC week are still to come. IT has been a busy schedule for the newly elected Weipa Town Authority, with a very quick introduction to the annual budget processes as we map the year ahead. Clearly resolving funding for the kerb and channelling for the residents in the older Courts on the eastern side of Rocky Point is a priority for us; and be rest assured that we have highlighted the issue as ‘critical’ in this year’s Capital Expenditure planning with RTA. We are hopeful that RTA accepts the critical nature of this project from a health and safety perspective and the planning can allow for completion of all the kerb and channelling upgrades over the next three years. The total project amounts to over $8.5 million of investment. A recent meeting in Brisbane with the Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli has clarified the new LNP government’s position with the Weipa Governance Project commenced during the last WTA term. The process will continue as a tri-partied arrangement between RTA, WTA and Department of Local Government with not only the first meeting under a new ‘regimes’, but what I believe could be a seminal meeting of the partners set down for mid-July. Our plan is to keep the community very well informed on progress. The WTA will now be regularly briefed on the new housing plans for Weipa, with Golf Links Estate Two sub-division now well advanced, and more planning being undertaken for the proposed Duyfken sub-division opposite the Albatross Resort. While cognisant of their own needs, RTA also understands that these two developments offer significant opportunity for investment into the new house market in either detached or town house dwellings. There will be no construction of dwellings until water upgrades have been completed; in-line with the previous WTA’s caveat for the relevant developments. The housing construction over the next five to six years will be spectacular, with indications of anything between 500-600 dwellings to be constructed. That is nearly a 50 per cent increase of the current stock. This level of activity

will surely be the envy of other regional centres; but importantly, the WTA is clear that it should not impact on current prices and that more affordable housing options be included. During the recent trip to Brisbane, we also met with Minister for Fisheries John McVeigh and his senior staff, and took the opportunity to introduce the Minister to the Chamber of Commerce’s “Strategic Plan for Growing Sport Fishing Tourism on the Western Cape” which was released in 2011. This is an ambitious plan that requires the strong support of the government. Sadly that support was not evident from the previous government, with only ‘lip service’ to the key priorities. The Minister has given us an undertaking to take a closer look at the lingering issues that exist of the conflicting management of Albatross Bay, as well as the annual permitting of a developmental fishery for deep water fish trawling in our offshore waters. For the WTA the permitting of a fishery that allows for a by-catch each year of nearly 300 tonnes of Trevally (species), the trawling for large aggregations of Mangrove Jack, Fingermark and Nannygai is not only not sustainable, but is significantly damaging our local recreational sport-fishing fishery. On the subject of fishing - Tom Murray, president of the Weipa Fishing Classic and his team take a bow. What another great event, made even better by bringing the boys from Creek to Coast to town. The Weipa show goes to air on September 1, 2012. Congratulations also to Aaron Johnson, Laurie Raleigh and Steve Lugsdin for their organisation of the inaugural “Weipa Eight a Side” cricket competition that started Saturday, incorporating a Sri Lankan international side from Scherger. What a great atmosphere, with the Sri Lankan cheer squad, complete with drums and whistles, bringing their team home by four runs. Little wonder it is their national sport! The competition throughout the day was tight and will continue this Saturday with the first game at 11.00 am featuring the international Scherger side.

Jesus question laid bare the fact that the Messiah must also be divine, because David called him “Lord”. Using the cane toad’s poison against itself AN effective new weapon in the fight against the spread of cane toads (Rhinella marina) has been developed by the University of Sydney, in collaboration with the University of Queensland. “This is the first powerful tool we have created to control cane toads,” said Professor Rick Shine, from the University’s School of Biological Sciences and the lead author of the study which is published in the Proceedings of Royal Society B on 13 June. The new research shows that the same powerful poisons cane toads use to devastate native species can be used as a weapon against the toads themselves – by using the poison as ‘bait’ in traps set in waterbodies to catch toad tadpoles. “A chemical ‘bait’ created from the toads’ poison is a real magnet for toad tadpoles,” Professor Shine said. The biggest obstacle to getting rid of cane toads is that a single clutch (the amount of eggs laid at a time by one female) can contain more than 30,000 eggs. “This means that even if you catch and kill 99 percent of the adult toads in an area, the few that are left can produce so many offspring that before you know it you are back to where you started – just as many cane toads as ever,” Professor Shine said. The only way around the problem is to stop the toads from reproducing, Professor Shine explains.

It is cheap, easy to obtain andd highly hi hl attractive i to toad d tadpoles - but repels the tadpoles of native frogs. “This is perfect to use in funnel-traps in ponds to catch toad tadpoles. Other native fauna such as fishes and insects aren’t attracted to this chemical but toad tadpoles are incredibly good at detecting it, and they search for its source as soon as they encounter it,” Professor Shine said. “When we use this chemical as bait in a funnel-trap we catch thousands of toad tadpoles and almost nothing else. In one natural pond, we collected more than 40,000 toad tadpoles in less than a week. And I think we got them all - over the next few weeks, not a single toad emerged from that pond.” The researchers hope to train people from local ‘toad-busting’ community groups in the proper methods of collection. Until then, even a dead toad inside a funnel- trap can serve as an effective ‘bait’ for toad tadpoles, without

Predators that try to eat toads are killed by the invader’s powerful poisons; in some local populations of crocodiles, goannas and quolls, more than 95 per cent.

BIOSECURITY Queensland is encouraging the community to have its say on the draft national management strategy for the invasive pest gamba grass. Gamba grass was declared as one of 12 new Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) due to its economic, environmental and social impacts as well as its potential to spread. SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... I HOPE all my K9 buddies and their humans are taking note of the crocodile warning stories my mum’s been putting in the paper lately. Seems there’s a big croc has taken up residence in the Trunding Creek and it’s not opposed to grabbing K9s silly enough to get near the edge of the water. My mum and dad have started taking me and my K9 mum Crispy to the Lakes for a walk in the morning, which we are really enjoying, and so far we haven’t had to deal with any reptiles intent on eating us for breakfast. I know it’s not as much fun, but I reckon it’s safer to stay on a lead when you go for a walk with your humans. WHAT is it about cat food that tastes so good? As I’ve mentioned before I am forced to live with felines and I’ve got to admit they do have their advantages. For one thing, they never eat all their meal which means Crispy and I get to clean up their leftovers, and they sure are tasty! Although Crispy and I understand we have to be nice to the cats (for some reason our humans seem to really like them) they can still provide us with some fun. For instance, they never fail to hiss and spit when you bail them up in the bathroom. Having learnt the hard way not to get too close to their claws I always keep my distance, but it’s still a few moments entertainment. The toys my humans buy for the cats are also pretty good. They put the feline’s toys in this strange carpeted cubby-house, which is supposed to be just for the cats, but as soon as the latest furry mouse hits the floor Crispy and I reckon it’s fair game! IF you are trying to choose whether to get a dog or a cat as a pet, here are some suggestions that might make your decision easier: If you want someone who will... Do anything to please you, get a dog. Bring you the newspaper without tearing through it first for the sports page, get a dog. Make a total fool of himself because he’s so glad to see you, get a dog. Eat whatever you put in front of him, get a dog. Always be eager to go out at any time you ask, get a dog. If you want someone who can scare away burglars without waving a lethal weapon around, endangering you and all the neighbors, get a dog. Never touch the remote, couldn’t care less about Monday Night Football, and watches dramatic movies with you as long as you want, get a dog. Be content just to snuggle up and keep you warm in bed, and who you can kick out of bed if he slobbers and snores, get a dog. Never criticise anything you do, doesn’t care how good or bad you look, acts as though every word you say is worth hearing, never complains, and loves you unconditionally all the time, Get a DOG! On the other hand... If you want someone who: Never comes when you call him, totally ignores you when you walk in the room, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, prowls around all night and comes home only to eat and sleep all day, and acts as though you are there only to see that HE’s happy... Get a CAT! (Don’t tell anyone...but I love cuddling up with the black cat, Yoda, when my humans are watching TV.)

The value of energy drinks NEED energy? Certainly not from this mob!

Some energy drinks are now claiming to be healthy, but all I can say is read your labels, check the ingredients and be aware of what you’re putting in your mouth. Very few energy drinks have many health benefits. You will get an initial rush, but that will be followed by an intense low and a craving for another hit. They are addictive and a scary fact is, that children are drinking these too. So why should you consider staying away from these chemically filled “energy drinks”? Firstly, you’re health is endan-

gered by caffeine overdose and addiction. The average energy drink contains nearly four times the amount of caffeine found in commercial soft drink, and several of the more popular brands contain the caffeine equivalent of 14 colas. Some energy drinks will give you the equivalent of about three and a half cups of coffee. Secondly, they contain sugar and artificial colours flavours and sweeteners. One can of energy drink contains the equivalent of nearly 10 teaspoons of sugar, and they are often filled with many chemicals including artificial sweeteners, flavours and colours. Straight from the laboratory into your precious body. I could list another three or four other reasons why neither you, or anyone in your family, will benefit from drinking energy drinks but I would prefer you did your own research and made your own decision. I won’t be drinking them, I would rather water any day, or some super nutrient-laden energy drinks such as these:

Earth energy drink Ingredients: 4 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup or agave syrup 1/4 teaspoon of salt (Himalayan salt has a lot more minerals and nutrients than table salt) 1/4 cup boiling water 3/4 cup water 1/4 cup of orange juice (use a hand citrus or electric juicer) 1/2 of a lemon juiced Combine all ingredients in a pitcher/jug and store in the fridge to chill.

Fruit boost smoothie Ingredients: 1 banana 1 kiwi fruit or a handful of blueberries ½ cup of milk of choice/green tea/ coconut water Honey to taste ½ cup of natural unsweetened yoghurt 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed/almond or both Blend all ingredients until smooth, drink straight away.

Chocolate peanut butter smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup milk, preferably raw/organic, or more to taste ¼ -1/2 cup Greek yoghurt (optional) 2 large bananas, preferably organic, previously cut into chunks and frozen 1-2 tablespoons organic peanut butter 1-2 organic egg whites 1-2 tablespoon raw chocolate powder or organic cocoa powder ice cubes or water (optional) Blend all ingredients – yum!

Basketball set to boom in Weipa ON Saturday, June 16 Western Cape Basketball held its inaugural basketball clinic at the Western Cape College WISH centre. Former Townsville Crocs assistant coach and Australian junior team selector Shane Froling, assisted by former State under-20 men’s assistant coach Gordon Fawcett and former Opals assistant coach Terri Page, put a number of young up-and-coming players through their paces. Both Froling and Fawcett commented on the level of participation and athleticism shown by these novice players. The clinic was followed by lunch and some organised games involving a number of interested people who showed up to test their talents against the former NBL player Froling. The day concluded with all

participants stating what a great day they had and a number of people putting their hand up to be involved in getting a competition up and running, so stay tuned. One young participant was heard to say �We should do this every Saturday�. We would like to thank the Albatross Bay Resort and the Weipa Bowls Club for their financial support in bringing the coaches to Weipa and the Western Cape College for the use of the facilities. Being able to run the clinic and games indoors on a great basketball court added to the experience. Thank you also to Jay Murray and the Weipa Sports Association, for assisting with the administration and to Tracey Jia, Terri Page and Ben Dare for organising the day. Finally all those people who turned up and helped out on the day, your efforts were truly appreciated.

Gotta love bush footy The FNQ Remote Challenge was held in Cairns on the weekend with three teams competing. Three Rivers, was represented by Cooktown, Hopevale and Wujal Wujal; Southern Cape by Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Coen, Lockhart River and Aurkun, while Central Cape was represented by Mapoon, Weipa and Napranum. There was some very entertaining bush footy playe,d with every game being decided in the final few minutes in each game. I felt very proud to be associated with these entertainers of our game as they showed some great gamesmanship out on the field, and represented their communities with pride. I’m very confident the Cape York team will be a force over the highly-fancied Queensland Outback team when they get into a war in Mt Isa in the near future. Round 15 has been a tipster’s nightmare as there have been some really interesting results. The mighty Cowboys lassooed the scoreless Broncos, while the Bulldogs put some bite into the Dragons with no puff.

The Sharks won a thriller over the Warriors, while the Eels’ season is going from bad to worse as they copped another footballing lesson from the Rabbits. The Titans overpowered the Panthers, while the Roosters put a end to the Tigers winning streak. The Big battle between the Storm and Sea Eagles lived up to the hype with the Storm snatching the win 30 seconds from fulltime. How devastating was it to lose to NSW in State of Origin two in Sydney on Wednesday night? I’m still hurting. I must say, they did deserve to win, but I’m very confident the Maroons will be buoyed by a record crowd in Brisbane and will come away with yet another series win...QUEENSLANDER! This weekend will see the Central Cape juniors Under 11 side to travel to Townsville to compete in the Laurie Spina Shield. This carnival is the most prestigious in Australia, with a record 64 teams being involved. I’m so excited for our young generation to be playing, and I’m sure they’ll represent with great honour and pride.

Scotty’s AFL round-up SO, it all went a bit pear-shaped last week. First of all the recovery process from the fishing comp festivities took a bit longer than expected, and for the start of the week I was about as smart as a box of hammers. Secondly, Management decided she had better slip into tune with the footy teams and enacted her version of the mid-year bye and took off to Melbourne, dragging The Deputy with her to negotiate the coffee and shoe shops. He was brave in the crisis though, the little fella. Fair dinkum, watching him walk out onto the tarmac and up the steps on Tuesday was like watching Oates make his sacrifice in Antarctica on the fateful day in 1912, when he walked out of the tent and left Scott and the others saying “I’m just going outside and I may be some time”. So I found myself left to hold onto dear life with Azrael quickly assuming her spot in the central command position, and The Princess as her co-conspirer. The others weren’t much use to me.

The Three Legged Houdini ran amuck for five days, during which I hardly saw her, as she spent most of her time either in the house next door or down at the oval watching the soccer. She eventually came home late on Saturday afternoon, when a good Samaritan dropped her off, after recovering her from the back streets of Rocky Point. The odds on the dog catcher have ballooned out to 20 to one. The Darstardly Fouls have gone off the lay and threaten to peck anything that comes within 10 metres of them (including Houdini, much to our amusement) and spent all their week trying to convert the back porch into a compost heap. As for Azrael, well I thought the Litter Quitter (the toilet training device for the cat) was a bit of a novelty at first, until I realised that the contraption actually stays on the toilet throughout the period of time that I need to use it. Now, as every bloke will understand its hard enough as it is to get your aim right, particularly late at night, and make sure you get things as close to the “noisy

Unlike poor old Oates who froze to death in minus 40 degree temperatures, The Deputy survived the frosty weather in Melbourne and came back with a new haircut, some new gymnastic moves and an even lesser regard for his own personal well-being. The Princess and I developed a mutual respect for each other. I basically

respect the fact I have to do as I’m told. She respects me for coming to that conclusion. Management returned to a house full of love and dirty dishes, so I think she’s looking for another break next week. The short round was not too exciting in the footy except that both the new teams put on a good performance. Pleasing to see, and I liked the look of the Giants forward line with Patton and Cameron the new Lloyd and Lucas. The Crows and Saints was the pick of the games for me. The tipping is at full-tilt with the competition heating up. Keep up the great work guys. UU from page 24 The most outstanding game of this play-off was between Team Tallie’s A4 Amanda McKenzie and Team Pint’s Jimmy Baira, resulting in Amanda winning only one of the four fiercely contested games with three of them stretching to “long”, but it was Jimmy’s night despite lots of handouts (1-3). A3 Steve Lugsdin gave it all he had against Laurie Raleigh in this great match with the odd pirouette to reach those tricky shots but it was not enough (0-3). A2 Glen Egan was psyched out by Rod Beilby’s skill and tenacity which paid off (0-3). The other game which would have been one to watch had they not pre-played was A1 Ross Hyytinen who defeated Tom Murray (3-1) however, as Team Tallie only won four games, it was more drinking time on Friday night! In B grade, regretfully Teams Margarita and Long Island Iced Tea did not make the grade, but first and second placed teams were Teams Mojito and Blue Lagoon. When these two teams played for the winner to go through to the grand finals, it was Team Mojito who proved their might, winning 18 games against 11. Team Blue Lagoon’s B8 Renee Williams crushed Team Mojito’s Lucy Boxall (3-0), B7 Kristie McManus forced the first game to “long” against Adrian Costello but he won and from there, they alternated wins (2-3). Third and fourth placed Teams Martini and Pina Colada played off to see who faced sudden death and who had the opportunity to proceed to the grand final and play Team Mojito, which resulted in Pina Colada being knocked out by only two games – close one! Team Martini’s B8 Charissa Hill played a challenging game against Jess Hall (as sub for Andrew Glen) with Jess taking the third game to “long”, however Charissa won overall (3-1). B7 Ruth Harris lost dismally against Cicely Baira who was in winning form (0-3). B6 Denica Russ (as sub for Emilly Jackson) and Katie Delfs (as sub for Aleisha O’Brien) was beaten in three (0-3). B5 Brooke Gwynne played a great match (as always) against Samantha O’Neill with the third game going “long” (3-1). B4 Omer Saaed played well and easily defeated Patrick Lightart (3-0). B2 Randall O’Neill played an excellent game full of long rallies, log shots, long games, and a unique segment where about a dozen sequential shots went down the right hand side wall, however Michael Cridland won the marathon match (2-3). Tuesday night between Team Stubby and Team Pint, who both incredibly achieved 10 winning games each. And I might add that each match consisted of five games, resulting in a countback of points to decide who should go on to play Team Schooner on grand final night. Team Stubby’s A4 Ben Tantau played as though his life depended on it, but Jimmy Baira showed dogged determination throughout the five lengthy games as there were many handouts and won (3-2). A3 Chrisden Russ also played steadfastly, winning two of the five games against Laurie Raleigh but Laurie was hungry for a win (2-3). A2 Jeff Berry and Rod Beilby battled to the end of their five-game saga resulting in a one point win by Jeff (3-2). A1 Owen Witt led his team to victory against Tom Murray but not without much resistance (3-2). Team Blue Lagoon won over Team Martini in all threegame matches to proceed to the grand finals and meet their rivals Team Martini on Friday night. In B grade preliminary finals, Team Martini offered little opposition in the first four matches when B8 Charissa Hill sadly lost to

Renee Williams (0-3). B7 Yours Squashfully not surprisingly lost to Kristie McManus (however saved grace by scoring 10 points) (0-3). Denica Russ (as sub for B6 Emilly Jackson) was no match for Luke Mann (0-3), and B5 Brooke Gwynne unexpectedly went down easily to Bianca Borg (0-3). B4 Omer Saeed defeated Emma Thomas (3-0), B3 Sally Parr was then defeated resoundingly by Emma Thomas (as sub for Tom Bellinger) (0-3). B2 Ben Smith (as sub for Randall O’Neill) had stiff opposition from Stephen Borg in the first two games (second one going to “long”) but then nothing (3-0). B1 Cole Dalton rose above Justin Hyytinen’s game tactics in the first long game and then powered on to take the next two (3-0). Some very interesting results of many matches indicate to me that a lot of changes need to be made to gradings next season including myself as I am obviously out of my league! Lady bowlers enjoy Di McNamara Shield ON Saturday, June 16, 14 lady bowlers gathered at the Weipa Bowls Club to participate in the Di McNamara Shield. Di has been the Lady Patroness for many years now, and every year sponsors the competition. As usual there was a great turnout and a terrific time was enjoyed by all who attended. Each pairs team played in a round-robin competition, with all teams playing each other once. Each game consisted of six ends. The day started at 9.30am in the morning and ended at about 4pm in the afternoon, with a half-hour break for a delicious lunch. There were some wonderful bowls played by all teams which was helped on by enthusiastic cheering from the crowd that gathered. The team with the most games wins were the winners for the day Beth and Norma, and the runners-up were Vicki and Lee-Anne. The shield was proudly presented by Di McNamara, who had also kindly donated prizes. Congratulations to the winners and to all the ladies who played. It was a great day. As is normal with any great bowls day, there are always incidences that happen that absolutely have to be reported. To avoid embarrassment I will leave out any names, however, all present on the day were shown

how to properly throw a tantrum; this is done by throwing down your bowls cloth onto the ground, with force, followed by your bowls hat. This was practiced by quite a few throughout the day. And we were also shown an alternate to dropping your dacks (as is the custom if you lose without scoring a point). This was practiced by nobody throughout the day. We are now at the nitty-gritty end of the season where all the top bowlers show why they are at the top. If you have never watched bowls before, get yourself down to the Weipa Bowls Club and watch some games. This is finals time where the better players get to show off their prowess. You will witness some magnificent bowling while sitting back with great company and a cold drink in your hand. And once you have watched a game and realise you want to be a part of it, join us for a social game on any Sunday (I promise you won’t have to drop your dacks). You need to have your name down by 9.30am so that bowling can start at 10am. For $10 you will have a great social day of bowls, a chance to win $50 in a lucky draw and a beautiful lunch. Why not give it a go? See you at Weipa Bowls Club – where they grab life by the bowls.

Keen juniors hit the golf course SUNDAY morning at the Carpentaria Golf course after last long weekend’s fishing was a bit tough, however we had about 22 keen juniors attend. The results are: A grade winner: Reece Singleton, runner-up: Taylor Francisco; B grade winner: Ned Brown, runnerup: Jordon Hohn; C grade winner: Max Newman, runner-up: Brandon Waratini; C3 grade winner: Rusty Newman, runner-up: Abaigh Gleeson. There will be no golf or training until after the school holidays, recommencing on the Sunday, July 15. Good luck to Steven Wust and Taylor Francisco who will be competing in the Peninsula golf in Toowoomba on July 14. Have a great school holiday break and keep practising. Cowboys’ pink jerseys to benefit charity THE North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will celebrate the NRL’s annual Women in League round by playing in eye-catching pink jerseys for the first time in a clash with the Canberra Raiders at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night. In a first for the club, the match-worn jerseys will then be auctioned online with all proceeds to be donated to Stillbirth Australia, a charity supported not only by the Cowboys but also by forward Glenn Hall who recently took part in the Dancing With The Townsville Stars competition to increase awareness of the Foundation’s work. Wanderers win inaugural FNQ Remote Challenge THE 2012 FNQ Remote Challenge was held in Cairns last weekend, with three teams battling it out to become the Cape York Champions. Central Cape, Southern Cape and Three Rivers travelled great distances to attend the carnival, but it was no issue, as the players enjoyed the opportunity to play some representive footy. Each team played each other twice in a round-robin format with every game going down to the last five minutes before we had a winner. Southern Cape Wanderers were the inaugural winners with

15.5 points, Central Cape 12.5, and Three Rivers four points. A very strong team was selected to take on the Queensland Outback in the near future. Three Rivers five-eighth Nigel Bowen was named player of the carnival, best back – Fitzroy Lawerance, and best forward – Eli Tabuai Results: Central Cape 28 – Three Rivers 26; Southern Cape 18 – Three Rivers 16; Southern Cape 34 – Central Cape 18. Southern Cape 22 – Three Rivers 20; Central Cape 26 – Southern Cape 26; Central Cape32 – Three Rivers 30.

Teamwork a highlight of local soccer games FAIR weather and a good turn out ensured fun games for all players and spectators this week. Soccer now breaks for the school holidays with the next games to be played on July 14. Thank you to the refereess and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Squirt Parents – your help with the teams as Game Leaders is very much appreciated and is needed to run games that the young kids can truly enjoy. Coaching for Teens, Titans and Senior Titans is on Mondays at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes is Wednesdays 3.30pm, however there is no coaching during the two weeks of school holidays. It is important that all players arrive 20 minutes before the start of their game to allow for full teams to be played. Please assemble at the P&C shed. Squirts White & Navy V Gold & Green Great teamwork from Isaac and Grayson for White, and Zack and Darius from Gold. Isaac scored some great goals and a ripper from mid-field. Grayson did some amazing kicks and fancy footwork. Zack was fantastic in defence and kicked some terrific goals. Darius was the leading goal kicker and put in a huge effort. Squirts Gold & Navy V White & Black Jay got the first goal of the game after a good pass from Tai. Tia kicked an awesome goal. Shonika stole the ball off the boys then Tai kicked a big goal from the half-way mark. Shonika kicked the ball all the way up the field, but was not strong enough for the attack from Tai, who then brought the ball back to the other end of the field to score. After a bit of rough and tumble, Shonika was finally rewarded with a goal, and Tai kicked an outstanding goal from diagonally across the field. Well played by all team members. I haven’t received any reports from the reefs off Duyfken Point but it was ďŹ shing well for those taking the time to go up there. If you spend the time looking for bait balls the tuna aren’t too far away. Throwing Spanyids to the feeding ďŹ sh should result in a hook-up, but remember match the hatch. On the shore fisherman are catching small ďŹ sh during the day but are getting better fish at night. The Mission River bridge has been going extremely well after midnight with good Barra smashing lures and live baits. Evans Landing has had some big ďŹ sh patrolling after dark as well. There have been Tarpon, QueenďŹ sh, Jews and Cod taking baits, but again not many ďŹ sh being landed. I’ve had reports of squid being caught in the river and used as live baits and getting smashed by unstoppable predators and leaving a few young fellows a blubbering mess. Crabs have been a bit quiet around here but there are plenty up Mapoon way. Most of the rivers and creeks have been holding Barra, Jacks, Fingermark and grunter. One customer re-

THE Weipa Fishing Classic has been run and won, and what a great weekend it was. The weather was perfect the guys from Creek to Coast did a fabulous job on stage. As a newcomer to Weipa I was suitably impressed with the organisation of the event, with food stalls, displays by sponsors, and the live entertainment from the bands, dancers and the tug-o-war, casting competition and the cast-net tossing provided something for everyone. After such a big event I thought that there would be reports coming in from everywhere, but they have been very thin on the ground. I know that the Tight Lines column is read, by the number of people coming into the shop and saying what a good read it is, so drop in or give me a call and tell me what you have been catching. Exact locations won’t be disclosed, just general area. There has been a lot of small Mackerel around out on the reefs and again the sharks have been a problem with some real big ones amongst them. Fishing for reef species has been a bit slow but if you persevere you can put a feed together comprising of Fingermark, Tuskies and Nannygai. Weipa Squash Club finals WEIPA Squash Club held their semi-finals, then preliminary finals over the last two weeks. In A grade, commiserations to Teams Pot and Yard Glass who bowed out of contention gracefully when Teams Stubby and Schooner finished in first and second place with Team Stubby narrowly coming out on top to go straight through to the grand finals. A surprisingly easy win it was for Team Schooner’s A1 Owen Witt against Team Stubby’s Lukas Dorsett (but perhaps running half marathons before semi-finals is not a good idea?), despite many nick shots, long strokes and backhanders against the left hand side wall, butany win by Lukas would only have added to their impending victory (3-0). A2 Jeff Berry and Grant Foster showed their athleticism, resulting in many excellent rallies and tricky short shots, however Grant was the stronger player even though Jeff forced the middle game to “long� (0-3). A3 Chrisden Russ could not rise to Sherie Hinschen’s challenging tactics (must have been the shoes!) despite their middle “long� game also (0-3). A4 Ben Tantau met with tough opposition in Jay Dumbleton and their marathon match went to five nail-biting games, demonstrating their equality of skill (3-2). Teams Tallie and Pint played off as third and fourth placegetters for the opportunity to have a second bite of the cherry and play against Team Schooner in the preliminary finals.
