NAIDOC week celebrations started this week with the first events being held in the Napranum community. On Sunday morning the inaugural Coming of the Light re-enactment was held. “Missionaries arrived by “boat and were greeted by locals before proceeding to St Barnabas Church. The afternoon was spent celebrating with traditional song and dance. The NAIDOC march through the streets of the Napranum community on Monday morning was attended by around 200 people and was the largest in several years. Following the march the day’s festivities continued at the PCYC grounds with food and craft stalls and information displays. Tug-o-war was popular with kids of
all ages throughout the afternoon and was followed by an evening of song, dance and spectacular fashion parades. The Monday night celebrations were attended by around 1000 people and was heralded a resounding success. NAIDOC celebrations continue this week with a Mapoon community street march and activities on Wednesday. Weipa’s NAIDOC activities commence with the Youth Ball at the Heritage Resort on Thursday evening. A community street march from Putts Palms to the Western Cape College commences at 2pm, and dance performances and live entertainment on the school oval will follow until 11.30pm. Mobile breastscreening comes to the Cape THE BreastScreen Queensland Mobile is coming to a town near you. BreastScreen Queensland operates as a free “well women’s service, which means they do not treat women who have breast cancer or who have possible breast cancer symptoms as the focus of the service is on early detection of breast cancer and reducing lifestyle risk factors. A breastscreen every two years is the best way to find breast cancer early. A breastscreen can pick up changes in the breast before they can be seen or felt. As 94 per cent of all breast cancer cases involve women over the age of 40, all women over 40 are invited to book a free breastscreen with the BreastScreen Queensland Mobile Service. All BreastScreen Queensland appointments are one-on-one with a female health professional. To find out more about BreastScreen Queensland visit www. health.qld.gov.au/breastscreen/ mobile-service To book an appointment please contact 13 20 50 or speak to your health worker.

o Cyclone OH dear, some upstanding pillars of the community have been caught for grog offences near Kowanyama. A policeman and two teachers, no less. How dare they? Fancy the brass effrontery of people who should know better coming to Cape York and behaving as if they were in a free country. Indulging in a cold beer on the beach might be good
enough in the rest of Australia, but things are different up here. They are lucky this was their first offence. They only have to brace themselves for a $37,500 fine each, plus the loss of their jobs. I don’t suppose they will hang around to commit a second offence... Oberfßhrer Newman is not happy about the rules. He thinks every Queenslander is entitled to a cold beer after a day’s
work or, in this case, a day’s beachcombing and fishing. But then, you have to remember that he works in the upper reaches of State government - possibly the most alcohol saturated part of Queensland. Cape York’s own philosopher, Noel Pearson, sees things differently, and I’d listen to him before anyone from the Deep South. He believes the OberfĂźhrer is indulging ‘utopian notions’, and that the push to bring grog back to dry communities comes from all the whitefellas who work in the councils. (Those sneaky whitefellas get everywhere, don’t they?) Me? I’m keeping quiet, even though a cold beer at the end of the day is a very fine thing. I’ve got other things to worry
SCREENING TO July 11 July 16 July 19 July 24 August 6 August 8 August 13 about. Like the potentially disastrous tangle over Wild Rivers regulations. First it looked as if they were going to tie up any development on the Cape, which would not be good for its residents. Now it looks as if they might be thrown out of the window, and mining permitted at the shrine of our blessed St Steve of Irwin on the Wenlock River. I dare say a development like that would do very little long-term for local residents either. You know what would make a difference to all this arguing? Move the decision-makers up here. I’m sure we’d get a lot more sense out them if they came to live in Coen. Now that would be a good thing for us locals!

MINISTER for Housing and Public Works Bruce Flegg visited the Weipa cyclone shelter site last Wednesday after turning the sod on the $14.6 million Category 5 cyclone shelter at the Edmonton Leisure Centre the previous day. LETTER / OPINION Letter to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Courts kerbing clarified I COULDN’T let the letter last week by “Name and Address supplied” (NASS) go unanswered. As the Chairman of the Weipa town Authority I need to outline the real facts behind the works currently underway in several courts around Rocky Point. I’ll then let the reader determine whether the
Weipa Town Authority is the ‘disgrace’ implied by NAAS letter. The WTA is legally within its rights to conduct works on any roads, drains or road reserves within the current town boundaries without the expressed approval of residents. All works have been conducted on the road reserves and not on private property. All residents were sent a letter, dated February 29,
2012, advising that drain cutting and minor road repairs would be conducted during this time. Most importantly, we wholeheartedly agree with NAAS that kerbing and channelling in these courts is well overdue. Following previous funding approval by RTA the work should have been completed by now, had it not been for the global financial crisis in 2008, at which time
the funding approval by RTA was withdrawn. The WTA rates budget is only small and as a result only about $500K is budgeted for the maintenance of roads, pot holes and drains annually. Funding for major capital works such as kerbing and channelling, sewerage works, water upgrades and the road reseal you see every year comes from RTA. As it does every year
the WTA will again submit its capital plan to RTA for major works. In the plan only recently submitted to RTA, the kerbing and channelling of Rocky Point has been listed as ‘critical’ and will be prioritised should RTA provide the funding. This project has been designated as ‘critical’ for the last four years. This is not a ‘buck passing’ exercise, these are the facts. RTA provides critical capital
expenditure for any and all infrastructure upgrades within the town. This occurs because unlike all other towns in Queensland where infrastructure is owned by the community; RTA is the owner here in Weipa. I hope this clarifies the lines of communication when lobbying for major infrastructure improvement. Peter McCulkin, Chairman Weipa Town Authority

75,%$/ %,%/( By Rev. Michael Connolly THE Lord Jesus was kind and understanding to the ordinary Jewish folk but expected Jewish spiritual leaders to live up to the standards that God expected of them. Instead they made the Laws far more complicated and heavier for people to carry than God intended. They twisted the Laws this way and that way until it lined up with their devious ways of thinking, and also lined their pockets. “They tie onto people’s backs loads that are heavy and hard to carry, yet they aren’t willing to lift a finger to help them carry those loads.” Then “How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! When Matthew wrote his gospel, he gave them curry, (Matthew Ch 23 vs 1-36), and you can read these particular messages above in Matthew Ch 23 vs 4 and 13 under the headings “Jesus warns against the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees” and “Jesus Condemns Their Hypocrisy”. (GNB). Study your Bible with those who live out the gospel in their lives, and, along with the Holy Spirit, they will steer you away from false teachings today, and make no mistake about it, false teachings are everywhere today. More so because of modern day communications technology, where it can be beamed right into our living rooms. The Lord be with you. – Rev Michael Connolly

Record turnout at Laura races By Jon Ortlieb
PLANNING has already started for next year’s Laura race day after yet another record turnout on the weekend. The Laura Amateur Turf Club’s annual races and horse sports drew such big numbers, the committee has already started drawing up plans to clear even more areas for camping with more amenity blocks and water services. This year the number of camps at the Cape York venue grew once again with an estimated 2500 attending the races on Saturday with a big turnout of riders taking part in Friday’s horse sports. “To see this is just fantastic after it looked like we’d never have another race day just a few years ago,” the LATC president Greg Williams said. “The work that’s been done by those on our committee, people from other race clubs who helped us out when things were dire and from all those that keep coming up and enjoying the weekend, it really is a tremendous thing.”
Williams had double reason to be happy as he finally realised his dream of owning a Laura Cup winner. He is part owner of the Jenny Ball Mareeba-trained Discarded Bullet that saluted in the $9000 Laura Cup with Mark Atkinson in the saddle. Atkinson was named jockey of the carnival with Paula D’Addona from Cassowary and George Doolan from Cairns sharing the training honours. Just as pleasing for the committee was the big turnout for the fashions in the field competition with cash prizes on offer for the first time. More than 50 fashionable racegoers paraded on the track for the four categories. Tahlia Kazim of Mareeba took out the Miss Laura junior title while Kim Hinsch of Yungaburra winning the over30s with her daughter Caitlin Hinsch making it a double in the under-30 division. Mareeba’s Cayce Ellerton was the crowd’s choice in the men’s division with a huge roar for the snappily dressed four-year-old. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch took up

A real win for country racing MEMBER for Cook and assistant minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, David Kempton, said the Laura Amateur Turf Club was a great example of how country racing makes such a significant contribution to regional Queensland’s economy and culture. Mr Kempton made the comments at the annual Laura race day on June 30, which was the most successful yet with about 3000 people in attendence. “Country racing is the glue that holds rural communites togther. Apart from the important social element the races provide jobs and a huge boost to the local economy” Mr Kempton said. He was very impressed with the large number of youg peoele who attended the weekend. There are more than 120 clubs throughout Queensland, and like Laura most of them are in regional and country areas. The racing industry supports about 30,000 people in employment and gives communities enormous economic and social benefits as well.
The State Government is looking to reinvigorate country racing in Queensland through real commitments such as: providing $4 million over the next four years to support the funding to country racing that is already guaranteed by the Racing Act; providing another $5 million over two years to support the Queensland Thoroughbred Investment Scheme, which will free up much needed funding to boost prize money; and establish a Clubs Cooperation Scheme so the smaller country clubs can benefit from the resources and expertise of the larger regional clubs. “This represents the best deal country racing has received anywhere in Australia,” Mr Kempton said “I was pleased to note that Racing Queensland has already acted swiftly on the back of these commitments to increase country racing prize money from September 1, 2012, from $4000 per race to $5000. “This is a real win for country racing and the people and communities it supports,” Mr Kempton said.

Elmes impressed with Napranum Council visit Alf Wilson story
STATE Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes visited Napranum last week and discussed important issues such as the Alcohol Management Plan with the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council. Mr Elmes told the Western Cape Bulletin that he was impressed with the new Napranum mayor and councillors. Napranum is a dry community but Minister Elmes said he had discussed with council a suggestion put forward that a
tavern may be opened there in the future. “It may be only for a few hours a day and the community has indicated it would have to be a facility for families. But it would have to be after the council recommended it. “I was very impressed with the council which has great enthusiasm,’ Minister Elmes said. Minister Elmes said he also met with the Weipa Town Authority during his visit and said he wanted to hear as many views as possible as the government moves from pre-election policy to present-day action. “We understand the frustration of
having federal, state and non-government agencies coming and going with their respective approaches that don’t necessarily fit appropriately, Mr Elmes said. “One of my priorities is to get better co-ordination of service delivery between the different levels of government “There’s no doubt a number of existing programs have value, but that value must be expressed in improved conditions and increased opportunities for communities. “I believe it’s essential to constantly assess services and, when necessary, make adjustments in line with communities’ situations and wishes, he said.
New council has big plans for Napranum DR Bruce Flegg, (Minister Housing and Public Works), Glen Elmes(Minister Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs and Minister Assisting the Premier) and Member for Cook David Kempton (Assistant Minister Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs) attended a very successful meeting at Napranum Shire Council on Thursday, June 28 2012. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor, Philemon Mene explained that the newly elected council has very big plans for Napranum. The council would like to implement the 10 year plan, and among other things, plans to establish an economic base in Napranum. The base will comprise of a commercial centre, a tourist caravan park, a school, a buildings construction department, road maintenance/construction unit, a sports bar and bistro, a solar farm, a hydroponic vegetable farm and a cattle ranch. The council estimates that when the economic base is fully established the businesses will create at least 70 new jobs for the local indigenous community. This will double the community members employment in Napranum. “We have received welfare for too long and we would like to change the game and start contributing to GST and Pay As You Go tax instead of always receiving Centrelink payments,â€? Mr Mene said. “The community is committed to achieving this, as you can see from our vision.- ‘Our legacy is the creation of a sustainable community‌ based on choice, trust and respect’.â€? The community identified 19 goals under the 10 year plan, and intends to start implementing the following important goals/activities: Social housing Napranum has about 203 social houses currently taking care of about 1,000 residents.
Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council members joined the Ministers on a bus tour of the Napranum community.
Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor, Philemon mene explaining the proposed Napranum economic base.
There are currently 68 approved applicants waiting to be allocated houses. There is also serious overcrowding and the situation is expected to worsen. To resolve this problem, the council intends to build around five houses per year, over the next 10 years, under the 40 year leases arrangements. However, the council admitted that they do not have a full understanding of the 40 year leases, and are concerned of the loss of rent revenue and loss of control over the houses after they are handed over to the state under the 40 year lease. The council intends to increase the employment of indigenous people in the housing construction. In order to close the Gap in Indigenous trades qualifications the council intend to establish a three-year training program targeting indigenous local workers. The council also thanked the Department of Housing
and Public Works for funding the new sub-division. Commercial Centre Napranum is seeking support to build an office/commercial centre comprising a retail store, butchery, laundry, restaurant, shops, library, post office and Council Chambers and offices. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Workplace mentor, Linda McLachlan with the 13 new Indigenous trainees on site.
RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa today welcomed the 2012 intake of indigenous trainees into its operations, marking the 10-year anniversary of the mine’s local indigenous traineeship programme. With an indigenous workforce of more than 25 per cent, Rio Tinto Alcan’s Local Aboriginal Person programme recruits local indigenous people who have tradi-
tional links to the land on which the company operates. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General manager operations Jo-Anne Scarini said the programme has been running on site since 2002. “This programme is an integral part of our commitment to the Western Cape Communities Co-existence Agreement (WCCA), providing local indigenous people

with an opportunity to gain an entry-level role, obtain a nationally recognised qualification and work experience, with the potential to secure permanent employment, Ms Scarini said. “Trainees play an important role in our operations, and I am delighted to reach this considerable milestone with past and present trainees. More than 250 local Aboriginal people have taken part in the programme since it launched a decade ago, with over 100 transitioning into permanent positions or apprenticeships, and approximately 82 still working on site today. The mid-year intake for 2012 includes 13 new trainees for Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and three trainees for Rio Tinto Marine on site, there will also be a second round of recruitment towards the end of this year. Rio Tinto Alcan Community Relations Liaison officer Amanda Woodley was a part of the first trainee intake in 2002 and transitioned into a permanent position with the mine after completing the 18-month LAP programme.
“Having started with Rio Tinto Alcan 10 years ago as one of the original trainees and seeing the programmes still running strong with a consistent intake each year is great, Ms Woodley said. Ms Woodley works within the Community Relations and Town department on site liaising with surrounding communities regarding community and cultural heritage affairs. John Tabuai, a new trainee in the 2012 LAP programme intake, believes that traineeship programmes allow for possible job opportunities for those in his home community of Mapoon. “It’s a bit of a family tradition to work for Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa – as several members of my family have relocated from Mapoon to have the opportunity to pursue their careers, including my uncle, Fun exercise program FEELING like expending some energy today, to strengthen and shape your body? Here is a fun, example workout that you could do at home or in the park, without any equipment. The colder weather is here and outdoor exercising is just what you might like to do. Grab a friend or family member and head to the park to enjoy/do this full body weight-loss program together. Please be aware that this is not and individual exercise plan and
that you should consult your doctor if you have any concerns before performing these exercises. This is a balanced full body program to help you lose weight. I specifically used exercises that use a lot of muscle groups at the same time. The larger the muscle mass worked the more calories are expended. Performing this program three to four times a week for two weeks, should help you to get into top form. It is challenging but effective.

CROSSWORD No. 105
SUDOKU No. 105
Your Lucky CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Your relationship with a neighbour should soon pick up. Find out what caused the disagreement between you in the first place. You will probably find that it was more petty than you remembered! Romance. A casual friendship may become much more serious than you expected. This may cause trouble in your circle of friends.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) There should be quite a lot to look forward to this week. Don’t rush things and try to take everything one step at a time. Romance. You may be a little over-thetop this week. You will be full of ideas, but must be careful not to get into deep water.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
FOR KIDS
You need an outlet for your excess energy. A local social club may give you the chance to do this, and to meet some new people at the same time. Romance. Don’t allow problems at work to spill over into your home life. A break from both environments would help you to get things in perspective.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You will enjoy being the centre of attention. Be careful though: it may be a little harder to get out of the limelight than it was to get in. Romance. Don’t allow somebody with much less energy than yourself hold you back. You may be better off pressing on ahead and making your own decisions.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Don’t be taken in by a remark that is less than serious. Use your wisdom to discover when people are speaking authentically or not. Romance. A new friend will be impressed by the way you handle an unexpected crisis. This is not the time to be timid and shy.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A person whom you have just met will be impressed by the level of your emotional strength. This person may become a valuable contact in the future. Romance. Communications with your partner will be especially good this week. Make the most of the opportunity to talk about unresolved problems.
FINDWORD No. 105 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Contact with a pet may help you to release tensions that have been building up. This animal will be able to pick up your feelings in a way that a human might not. Romance. Your love-life will be in good shape. You may find that you have more influence over your partner than you are used to.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au
MUDDY RIVER
Your relationships with those around you will improve still further over this period. Try to strengthen any bonds that you may have been ignoring recently. Romance. This will not really be a very good time for romance. Try not to stay away from fights over petty issues: although it may seem important at the time, in the long run it won’t be worth it.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A casual remark could be the first step in an important new relationship. Don’t expect too much at first, however. It may take some time to come to fruition. Romance. You may be a little slow to tell your partner how you feel about them. Be bold: they need to hear it loud and clear! Some extra creativity will be very appreciated.
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) This will be a very good time to take the initiative. Don’t be afraid to be more assertive than usual. Romance. If your loved-one lets you down this week, you will not be interested in their excuses! Search for authentic solutions.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
QUOTE OF THE DAY Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says “I’ll try again tomorrow.” – Mary Anne Radmacher
SOLUTIONS No. 105
Provided you can keep an eye on what you are doing, everything will go well. If you lose concentration, just for a moment, you are likely to make a careless mistake. Romance. Someone close to you may be exerting more of an effect than you realise. Now is a good time for some self-reflection.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) An awkward situation at work may take you by surprise. Don’t jump to any conclusions about what has happened until you have all the evidence. Romance. Your enhanced sensitivity will help you to understand your partner better. Concentrate this week on their special needs and desires.

Can Queensland win the state of origin blockbuster?

WHO will it be in 2012, Queensland or NSW? I know we all want Queensland to win a seventh straight series and is it going to happen. Queensland have lost big gun Billy Slater who will be sorely missed, but with attacking ace Greg Inglis moving to fullback it will be a fearsome sight to see the big guy in full flight. Matty Bowen has been is career best form and can consider himself very unlucky not be in the final 17. NSW has taken their game to another level this year, however with a very buoyant strong home crowd I’m sure the mighty Maroons will rise to the occasion. In a shortened round 17 in the NRL with only five games played, I think the fans still

received the great value of our great game. Friday night saw the Sharks continue on their merry way to another win by overcoming the decimated baby Broncos. The Sharks are the big improvers in 2012 and I’m starting to believe we will see the baysiders in this years final series. Saturday night saw the Eels and Knights play a very exciting brand of football, but the Knights inflicted more pain on the Eels, with a convincing win in the end. The Cowboys jumped on their horses and went for a ride over the Tasman to take on the monstorous Warriors. It was a gutsy effort from the Cowboys without their State of Origin
Scotty’s AFL round-up ROUND 14 didn’t provide too many surprises with the top four sides all starting to shine. Sydney, West Coast and Essendon all recorded big wins while Adelaide had to come from behind to upstage the Tigers. Carlton desperately needed a win on Friday night but Hawthorn recorded their ninth consecutive victory over the blundering Blues with a comprehensive 50-point triumph. The Magpie army was in full voice at the MCG on Saturday afternoon as their team recorded their 10th consecurity victory with a 29-point triumph over Fremantle. Does it seem to anybody else that Collingwood seems to play with 24 players on the ground?
The Adelaide Crows dug deep to overturn a 33-point quarter-time deficit to power to a come-from-behind 19-point victory over Richmond at AAMI Stadium on Saturday. The Gold Coast Sun’s woeful season hit a new low in the form of a 126-point annihilation handed to them by a brilliant West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Saturday. Much to Bomber Brown’s delight, Essendon climbed to fourth spot on the AFL ladder, following a comprehensive 84-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night (our Jetta’s still better than yours though Bomber!) The might Sydney Swans gave their cross-town rivals,
stars but the Warriors were just too big, too strong and too fast at the end of the day. The mighty red and green machine the Rabbitohs continued their good form with a convincing win over the Panthers with no prowl. Monday night will see the Raiders and Dragons battle it out in freezing cold conditions in the nations capital. It has been interesting the last two weeks in thee NRL with player movements. There has been a number of players switching clubs, looking for further opportunities in the NRL. I firmly believe if the player is not happy or the players aren’t meeting the clubs requirements it should be allowed for the player to find a new and happy environment.
One final note the Women in League Round has produced some spectacular uniforms but I must say pink is not my colour for the footy boys. In saying that, I feel honoured and privelaged to be part of our game when I see the calibre of the results we have been getting for our charites and foundations - great work. Gotta love rugby league.

ROUND 15 – Fri, JULY 6 - Sun, JULY 8 FRI, JULY 6 SAT, JULY 7
Collinngwwod v Carlton @ MCG North Melbourne v West Coast @ Blundstone Arena Melbourne v Richmond @ MCG Sydney v Brisbane @ SCG St Kilda v Essendon @ Etihad Stadium Port Adelaide v Adelaide @ AAMI Stadium SUN, JULY 8 Hawthorn v GWS @ MCG Gold Coast v Geelong @ Metricon Stadium Fremantle v Western Bulldogs @ Patersons Stadium Greater Western Sydney a lesson in top-level football on Saturday night. It was a lopsided affair, with Sydney recording their fourth victory with a 94-point win over the baby Giants. Although Port Adelaide looked like they might just stay in the game at three-quarter time Geelong overcame them by 38 points in a scrappy affair at Simonds Stadium on Sunday. The Cats have now consolidated seventh spot on the ladder which should make Scotty happy. Stretch was lucky enough to catch the Brisbane Lions game against Melbourne on Sunday at the Gabba...I say lucky because he just happened to witness one of the few games

the Lions have won this season! I must admit a 61-point victory is pretty impressive, and the Lions are now in a position to jostle for a spot in the eight. North Melbourne have replaced St Kilda in the top eight after recording a come-frombehind 33-point win over the Saints in a fierce Sunday twilight clash at Etihad Stadium. I only saw the first half of the game but it was a tight match and great viewing. Scotty is currently exploring our beautiful Cape York backyard but will be back to regale you with stories from his trip next week...oh, and a bit of footy information too! – Ed (PS: Go the Swannies!)

McCrae to referee Weipa Cape Cluster round Anna and Nicky Kerindun with the Indigenous Marathon Project team on the Gold Coast last weekend.
Alf Wilson story
LOCAL Weipa runners Anna and Nickaela Kerindun have achieved outstanding results at the Gold Coast Airport Running Festival last weekend. The sisters both tackled the 10km event on Saturday morning, with 19 year old Anna finishing in an impressive time of 1 hour 15 mins, and 21 year old Nicky just behind her in 1 hour 25 mins. The pair are part of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, and are in training for the world’s biggest marathon,
VETERAN North Queensland rugby league referee, Rod “Hairy” McCrae will be in Weipa this weekend to referee games in the opening round of the Cape Cluster Competition. McCrae told the Bully on July 3 that he would also be on the lookout for potential new referees. “I may even be able to identify somebody who can coach referees up there. There is a couple of accredited refs, including Rod Whittle who is recovering from illness,” McCrae said. The 64-year-old McCrae will travel to Weipa with another Cairns-based referee Roy Brown and his son Brett who will be a touch judge. McCrae said during the Cluster season he would be also be travelling to Coen, Aurukun, Lockhart River and Kowanyama for games and would also be trying to recruit referees. “They have finished their home ground and should have some games there,” McCrae said. During the last decade McCrae has been a senior referee at carnivals and games at Weipa, Cairns, Thursday Island, Badu Island, at Bamaga, Weipa, Cooktown, Palm Island and Yarrabah. Soon McCrae will travel to Bamaga to look for referees and in late June identified three on Palm Island. Well respected by Indigenous footballers in the far north, McCrae refereed his first Badu Island Island of Origin in 1994. McCrae has refereed at many carnivals around north Queensland including the Cairns Allblacks, Zenadth Kes on TI, the Dan Ropeyarn at Bamaga, at Yarrabah and many more. McCrae said it was important for club officials and supporters to respect referees and abide by a QRL code of conduct. “Without referees there would be no games,” he said.
the New York City Marathon to be held in November. For Anna, the run was a nine minute personal best from her run in the Canberra Mother’s Day Classic only six weeks ago. De Castella said he was extremely proud of what both girls had achieved in such a short space of time. “To see these girls get out there after only a few months of training, and achieve what they have is truly inspiring,
and I am excited to see what lies ahead,” de Castella said. While on the Gold Coast, the team undertook more components of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure, and learnt some tricks of the trade from a number of high profile athletes including Lee Troop. The pair will now return home to continue training before heading to Alice Springs in September for a 30km test event
Cape juniors the NRL stars of the future Alf Wilson story and pics
A NORTH Queensland Cowboys official has rated the Central Cape Suns as one of the most improved junior rugby league teams at the prestigious Laurie Spina Shield carnival, which was held in Townsville on June 22 and 23. Cowboys media manager Paul Munnings said that the Weipa-based Suns had improved in leaps and bounds since the 2011 carnival when they lost all six matches. Suns’ coach and former champion player Garreth
Smith provided a swift explanation for the improved form. “We were very happy with the results. The kids have been playing a lot of football up in Weipa this year. “Cameron Miller, the QRL development officer helped us set up the junior competition and I believe the good results come from the week-to-week football. “I enjoyed coaching the kids again and it is very refreshing to be around kids that love the game for what it is.
“It was also good to watch my own son run around and be involved in his games,” Smith said. The Weipa side had to travel amongst the longest distances to get to the carnival held at Brothers League’s Club grounds in Townsville. Tyranny of distance puts sides from such remote areas at a severe disadvantage when compared with the majority of teams. Many of these compete in registered competitions which in the past places like Weipa never always enjoyed
the luxury of. The dedication of officials such as Garreth Smith, Cameron Miller, team manager Sarina Adams, Carl Adams and others had ensured that Cape York juniors are now being noticed by talent scouts, and there were many of those at the Laurie Spina Shield. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but perhaps now with competitions like the Laurie Spina Shield, it won’t be long before Cape York juniors of today will be NRL stars of the future.

Very few reports coming in from up north but the Wenlock was ďŹ shing extremely well in the fresh water with some lovely Saratoga being caught. I ďŹ shed in the Andoom for one legal Barra all day, so I still have a lot to learn. Fishing off the shore under Andoom bridge there were Bream being caught while we were pulling the boat out. Evans Landing has had its fair share of action with Grant Phelps and his mates having a ball catching squid and live baits on jigs and then turning the baits into hook-ups with unstoppable fish, ending in grief. A by-catch has been some big Tarpon falling on the bait jigs and giving the boys a bit of fun. Gary Mclean has been taking

ANOTHER week has flown by and the weather has been spectacular and along with the good weather the fishing has been excellent. All the guides fishing out in the blue are recording big catches of Spanish Mackerel, with most being in the seven to 15 kilo range. Jim Borthwick had one on which he estimated at 40 kilos before it got sharked. There are vast schools of Tuna out there as well, but again, sharks are proving to be a menace so landing these speedsters is a bit of a problem. Cobia are also around in good numbers and are showing up around the boats ďŹ shing the bottom. I heard a rumour that the Black Mullaway are on some of the southern reefs along with Fingermark, Reds and Trout. If the weather holds up there should be some Sailfish and Marlin on the wider marks. The leads have been holding some good ďŹ sh, but it pays to move around ‘til you ďŹ nd them, but there have been Trevally and Queenies for the taking. The rivers have been a hit or miss situation with some good captures and others missing out completely. The bite for Barra has been on the flats with the run-out tide being the best, but don’t get stranded! Fishing in the deeper holes in the rivers has produced a few Fingermark on live baits, but the Salmon have slowed
