Special gift from the Duyfken

By Giembra Busmer

THE Duyfken (Little Dove), a replica 1606 Dutch ship, has made Evans Landing wharf her home for the past five days and nearly 700 people have visited her. Locals and tourists flocked to the little ship to walk the decks, smell tarred hemp and oiled oak, and stoop to explore the dark recesses below. While most visitors to the ship took away memories and photographs, the people of Mapoon received a special gift from the Duyfken crew. UU continued page 2

On Sunday afternoon, an Indonesian canoe was presented to the Mapoon community by crew of the Duyfken on behalf of the Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation. Following her launch in 2000 the Duyfken embarked on a re-enactment expedition and sailed to Indonesia (the old Spice Islands) where the building of the canoe was commissioned. “The soul purpose of commissioning the canoe was to enable it to be used in the 2006 re-enactment at Mapoon, Duyfken skipper Matthew Bolton explained. “The 2006 expedition marked the 400th anniversary of the Duyfken’s original crew coming ashore at Cape York. “The Foundation no longer requires the canoe and acknowl-

edging the significance of the ship, and the re-enactment, has decided the best place for the canoe would be in this part of the world. The donation of the canoe was gratefully accepted by elders of the Mapoon community who presented the crew of the Duyfken with an original painting. Land and Sea Co-ordinator for the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council said the community was overjoyed to receive the canoe. “In recent times a lot of things that originated in Mapoon have been returned to the community and the canoe will sit along side these things in the cultural keeping place, Ms Blackwood said. The Duyfken continued on her journey to Fremantle at dawn on Tuesday morning, her next port of call Darwin.

Illegal dumping a concern THE illegal dumping of waste in and around Weipa by some irresponsible members of our community is fast becoming a major issue for the Weipa Town Authority and the community. As well as high clean-up costs illegal dumping of waste also has a negative impact on our environment and public health. The WTA reports that most of the waste being dumped is in green belt areas adjacent to resident’s properties. Some of the waste includes: garden green waste, household rubbish, construction and demolition waste, larger items like furniture or damaged clothes lines, and abandoned vehicles. The WTA would like to remind residents that the disposal of most types of household waste is free to residents and that the Weipa Landfill is open from 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm on weekends. In addition, the WTA would like to remind those responsible for dumping waste illegally that under the provisions of the Waste

Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 that you can be fined if you illegally dump or dispose of waste, including littering from a vehicle or a boat. Fines begin at $200 per offence for minor offences such as throwing a food wrapper or cigarette butt on the ground to a minimum fine of $1600 per offence for disposing of green waste illegally. Maximum fines can reach as high as $40 000. WTA chairman Peter McCulkin said, “The illegal dumping of waste anywhere in the Weipa town area is unacceptable and I would encourage anyone who sees illegal dumping to contact the WTA immediately. “Let’s all do our part in ensuring we all dump our waste responsibly and remind our neighbours and friends to do the same. Let’s not waste Weipa, Peter said. Weipa Town Authority can be contacted on 4030 9400 or by logging a complaint on the website www. weipatownoffice.com. Residents are asked to supply as many details as possible so the offenders can be identified.

New dental van for Cape York communities QUEENSLANDERS living on Cape York Peninsula will benefit from a new mobile dental van. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg inspected the $580,000 ten-tonne van at Weipa last Wednesday. The new van was funded through the Commonwealth Government’s National Partnership Agreement on Health Infrastructure. “Queensland Health is dedicated to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders to close the health gap, Mr Springborg said. “That’s why we’re working with the Commonwealth to treat more patients in their own communities. The Minister said maintaining good oral health was critical. “Good oral health helps indigenous Queenslanders to manage other chronic diseases such as diabetes, he said. The new drover van will provide the necessary infra-

structure for oral health services to be provided to Cape York’s isolated communities. “We can take the drover to places where there is limited or no local access to oral health services,he said. “Patients won’t have to travel so far for treatment. The drover is kitted out just like a state-of-the-art dental surgery except it’s on wheels.

There’s a dental chair, sterilisation area and reception desk and the inside is air-conditioned. There’s also an automatic awning to shade people waiting outside. It is fully equipped to deal with all routine oral health services for patients of all ages in remote communities. It features automatic stabiliser legs to help create a level, stable working

place even when parked on uneven ground which is really important for precise dental work. The 9.2m four-wheel-drive weighs 10,720kg and can be connected to on-site power or run using its 9 kVA generator. The drover’s exterior features art by indigenous artist Riki Salam, Mr Springborg said.

Weipa health services assured by Cape York HHS THE Cape York Hospital and Health Service (HHS) has stepped in to help secure the future of general practice medical services at Weipa, by taking control of service delivery at the Weipa Medical Centre from July 1. In Weipa last Wednesday, Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the owner of the private practice, Weipa Medical Centre Ltd, had agreed to lease the business on a temporary basis to the Cape York HHS at no cost. “The Cape York HHS will operate the general practice using its own Queensland Health doctors and other practice staff, Mr Springborg said. Weipa Medical Centre had advised its patients of the change. Permission for the Cape York HHS to access patients’ records would be sought by the HHS from individuals at the time of their next appointment with the new service. The Weipa Medical Centre had a permanent medical establishment of 1.5 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) private general practitioners. “Both the existing private doctors previously employed at the service have

taken positions elsewhere. They will be replaced by Queensland Health doctors on an equivalent FTE basis,’’ he said. “These doctors will be additional to the three full-time doctors already employed by the HHS at the Weipa Integrated Health Service. “As a result, there will be no alteration to the current level of service available through the private medical practice, he said. “There will be no added burden on the existing medical workforce employed by the Hospital and Health Service at Weipa that looks after public patients. Mr Springborg said responsibility for supporting private practice GPs in remote areas across Australia was a Commonwealth responsibility. The lease of the Weipa Medical Centre by the Cape York HHS was an interim solution while a permanent new private practice operator was found. “The Cape York HHS will be working with the Federal Department of Health and Ageing, Far North Queensland Medicare Local and Rio Tinto to develop a long term sustainable solution for the

Weipa community,’’ Mr Springborg said. “The Cape York HHS has already had strong interest from other private operators and will be entering into some serious discussions with them in the next few weeks. “Delivering private general practice services is not the Cape York Hospital and Health Service’s core business, which is to provide services to public patients. “However, given the reality that the Weipa Medical Practice would otherwise have ceased to operate on July 1, the Cape York HHS felt it was its duty to step in and safeguard local health services for the benefit of all the community.’’ The Weipa Medical Centre is colocated within Queensland Health’s Weipa Integrated Health Service facility. Patients of the general practice can continue to make appointments with the Weipa Medical Centre using existing contact numbers. “The Cape York HHS believes it has come up with a win-win solution for everyone involved and with the prospect of protecting the future of private medical services at Weipa,’’ Mr Springborg said.

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s housing maintenance officer, Patsy Hudson, has overseen the centre’s refurbishment.

THE Western Cape Cultural Centre will officially open for trade from Monday, July 16. The newly refurbished cultural centre, at Evans Landing, showcases Weipa and its surrounding communities and aims to encourage locals and visitors alike to learn about Western Cape York’s history and culture. The centre preserves traditional languages and culture from around the region by exhibiting local artwork and information. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Housing Maintenance officer Patsy Hudson, who has overseen the refurbishment over the past couple of months, believes the cultural centre is a significant structure for the community and represents the region’s history well. “The Western Cape Cultural Centre is a fantastic addition to the town of Weipa as it educates the community and visitors about the significance of the land to surrounding communities and Traditional Owners, Ms Hudson said. “I feel very lucky to be a part of the refurbishment of the cultural centre, especially as I am working on my own Algnith traditional land. “The centre brings the surrounding communities together and demonstrates how far we have come and where we are heading in the future as a region. To celebrate the completion of the restoration, the Weipa Town Authority is holding a Movie Night at the cultural centre, and will be showing the film ‘Puss in Boots’ on Saturday, July 14. Tickets can be bought on the night - $2 for school-aged children, $5 for adults and $10 for a family Locals and visitors are encouraged to come down to the Western Cape Cultural Centre from Monday, July 16 onwards. For more information, contact Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community feedback hotline 1800 707 633 or email RTAWeipafeedback@riotinto.com

THREE Weipa dirt kart racers set off on a 30-hour drive to Alice Springs yesterday morning to compete in the Australian Independent Dirt Kart Association Northern Territory state titles to be held from July 13 to 15. Justin Hyytinen, Ben West and Dan Metcalfe are the first Queensland contingent to ever contest the NT titles and are quietly confident they will do the Weipa Dirt Kart Club proud. With over 160 karts expected to

participate in the titles the Weipa boys skills are sure to be put to the test, with Justin competing in the KT100 heavy class, while Ben and Dan will contest the KT100 medium class. The local dirt kart racers are also using the trip as a “reconnaissance mission, as the Weipa Dirt Club is planning to hold a Queensland dirt kart state title round here in 2013. The Western Cape Bulletin will bring you the results of the boy’s titles quest on their return.

Naturopath joins CY Pharmacy team NATUROPATH Carly Meaden arrived in Weipa in May, and upon noticing what she described as a “service gap in the region has joined the Cape York Pharmacy team. A classically trained naturopath Carly has studied yoga in Nepal, Ayur Veda (traditional Indian medicine) in India, traditional Chinese practices in China while attending a kung fu school, and is currently undertaking post-grad studies in nutritional medicine for mental health. Carly has also been teaching massage for around seven years, and has been a massage therapist for 10 years. Describing herself as a “people person Carly says she is looking forward to being involved with the community and talking with people. “I enjoy the education process, Carly said. “Rather than just giving someone medication and telling them to take it, I like to explain to people why they are ill, and how they can fix it,

and take responsibility for their own health. Carly plans to expand the pharmacy’s already comprehensive range of health products, as well as providing a more clinical aspect to natural health remedies. A consultation room in the pharmacy is a future plan, however Carly is happy to provide consultation in the store for anyone interested.

NOW Incorporating the Northern Brick Co.

WEIPA is facing a serious dilemma over the status of its tourism industry. At the recent forum hosted by Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF), the possible structure of a regional tourism body to represent the whole of the Cape was presented to those present. This forum followed on from a very successful series of tourism workshops, held during the past 12 months, that showed a high level of interest by business and tour operators in forming such an organisation. The Gulf Savannah has had such representation for the past decade. Why hasn’t this happened on the Cape? As a professional tour operator who has operated in Weipa for nearly 15 years, I have asked this question many times during that time. There was a local tourism committee that was part of the Chamber of Commerce for over half of those years and as secretary of that body for much of that period, I became well acquainted with the anomalous community situation created by our town administration.

All other major centres comparable with Weipa have councils that support their local tourist industry. Cooktown, Mareeba, Atherton, Herberton, Normanton, Karumba – all receive assistance and promotion. Many tourist businesses are also ratepayers so this is simply part of an equitable process. The majority of Weipa businesses are also ratepayers and many rely on tourism to contribute from 30 to 100% of their income. Surely the owners and operators of these establishments could expect to see the industry that contributes substantially to their viability given some support by the local authority. In fact, after mining, tourism is the next most important contributor to the town’s economy. But the RTA line has always been, “we dig dirt, we don’t do tourism. That’s okay where RTA is concerned, but it is definitely not okay when the body responsible for running and representing our town and community is considered. It is time for RTA and the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) to take a much more balanced view of the local business sector and start to support a more holistic regional outlook.

Currently, the campground is bulging at the seams with drive-in tourists making campsites and rooms very hard to come by. The shelves at Woolworths can’t be ďŹ lled quickly enough and fresh produce is starting to become scarce only a few days after the barge comes to town. All the shops are busy, as are many of the repair-type businesses. These tourists need better information and more to do while they are here. Such initiatives need to be supported by both local and regional structures. CYSF is doing its best to bring a Cape York tourism body into existence and Weipa should be an important cog in that wheel. RTA, by admission, is not tourism savvy. Therefore, it should be leaving the business of tourism development to those who are, and seeking a coordinated approach to local issues through the WTA. Ultimately, the WTA is there to represent ALL community members, some who work in mining and others who engage in tourism. RTA must realise that it has an obligation to ensure this happens and avoiding the issue is no longer good enough. Dave Donald, Weipa

Graziers to have chance to shape industry policy GRAZIERS will get the chance to discuss the future of the northern grazing industry at a workshop hosted by AgForce in August. AgForce Projects technical leader Graeme Bell believes that graziers are a key resource to protecting biodiversity in the region and dealing with biosecurity matters. “Grazing in the Cape is unique

because the landscape is diverse and industry believes graziers in the north are vital for the protection of the landscape, “Mr Bell said “It is important they are allowed to continue farming sustainably through security of tenure, viability of rents, access to markets and understanding current and proposed legislation. Guest speakers from National

Chilli Beach clean-up LOOKING for an excuse to head across the Cape for a weekend getaway? What better reason than to join the fourth annual Chilli Beach clean-up on Friday, July 27. The community clean-up will start at 9am at the northern end of the beach and will be followed by a barbecue for volunteers at 1pm. Local school students and community members will be involved and volunteers are also needed to help collect the marine debris washed ashore at Chilli Beach thanks to fresh south-easterly winds and prevailing currents. Tangaroa is hoping to tackle the entire length of the beach this year and have enlisted the assistance of Conservation Volunteers Australia, along with southern volunteers, to commence the clean-up from the southern end of the beach, commencing on Thursday, July 26 and working through until Monday, July 30. There is an estimated four to six tonne of debris on the beach to be removed so a big effort is required and your assistance would be greatly appreciated. The Cook Shire will be bringing a baler to the clean-up and plastic debris collected will be taken back to Cairns before being transported to Brisbane for recycling by Replas. If you would like to help, meet at the northern end of Chilli Beach at 9am on Friday, July 27. Gloves and rubbish bags will be provided.

The benefits of protein JUST like carbohydrates, you do need protein in your diet. It is part of all living cells and is therefore absolutely essential for all bodily functions, and I suggest you find it in lean wholefoods in your diet. Protein is found in a great variety of foods and if you follow a good balanced diet you should not be in need of supplementing with additional protein at all. Proteins are digested to release amino acids. In the body, the amino acids are used to make new proteins, converted into hormones such as adrenalin, or used as an energy source. There are essential and non-essential amino acids. Essential ones cannot be produced by your body and therefore have to be taken in by food sources, particularly if you are a vegetarian or vegan. Where do we find healthy sources of protein? It is important to understand that not only it is important to have a sufficient intake but also what sources you get your protein from. Unless you choose to eat a meat or diary-free diet the main source of protein intake should be lean, organic meats or fish, which help synthesize all essential amino acids. Focus on variety here: red meats, chicken, turkey, pork and wild caught fish. Other food sources are dairy, eggs, nuts, green leafy vegetables, sea vegetables like Spirulina and legumes. Some of these other food sources may not incorporate the right proteins to synthesize all essential amino acid so therefore it is important to combine the right foods in your diet. Quality vs quantity: Only one third of or diet needs to be protein and since it is found in a great variety of foods there should be no shortcoming. In my opinion it is way more important to eat the right quality of protein. Organic meats vs conventional

Farmers Federation will update graziers on a wide range of policies and legislation. Producers will take part in a discussion form addressing ‘How to ensure grazing is part of the Cape future’. meats: I believe the best, and cheapest source of healthy lean red meat is to start incorporating kangaroo in your diet, or source organic meats. Chicken vs turkey: Again, organic vs conventional, but also turkey helps you to vary the intake of your proteins. Turkey is great to be eaten at night as it helps to synthesize a hormone that helps you sleep, and is a healthy alternative. Farmed fish vs fresh: Farmed fish is treated with lots of antibiotics and it’s not necessarily the healthiest choice. Catching your own fresh fish, rather than buying it from commercial fishers, helps to balance the eco system as well as providing you with fresh protein. Try to only catch what you need and share any excess around. Definitely the healthiest choice of protein unless you have a grass-fed cow, or happy chickens in your yard. Dairy: Organic, pasteurised is the way to go. Most of the milks you can buy in the stores are homogenised, and this is suspected to have some major impact on your health including thinning of arteries and allowing calcium deficiency. Protein shakes: have their place but should not need to be part of your every day diet unless you have special requirements. Siprulina: may taste yucky to some, yet a very natural and healthy source of protein. Eggs: organic free range and grain fed eggs are your healthiest option if you have to buy them at the store. Otherwise have a couple of chicken in your yard they are lovely creatures with character and fertilize your lawn as they “go. This is basic and general nutritional advice from your personal trainer/nutritional medicine student. As there are many contradictive opinions out there about the right diet, and especially about protein, I encourage you to keep researching and find out what is best for you health.

OPINION

From the Chairman Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman

Marine Logistics

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

“SELLING” Weipa to government ministers, both State and Federal has been a major focus for the Town Authority over the past ten days as they visited Weipa, most for the first time. This ‘selling’ has been done, due in no small part to the inconsistencies that exist with funding eligibility for the Town Authority from the majority of their respective agencies. These inconsistencies exist because of our ‘unique’ governance arrangements with Rio Tinto. So the message from the Town Authority was pretty clear, firstly to Ministers Flegg and Elms, Minsters for Public Works and Aboriginal Affairs respectively was that Weipa is very much open for business and supports a significant regional ‘hub’ for government services with a very healthy Western Cape Chamber of Commerce providing employment opportunities across the region. Future construction and housing developments in Weipa provide significant opportunities for both Ministers’ departments. A presentation on “The Weipa Community Plan” also provided both ministers with a very positive view on how their departments may do business in and with Weipa in the future given the community’s aspirations under the plan. The Minister for Health, Lawrence Springborg also left Weipa late last week with an understanding of the community’s aspirations; being also left in no doubt after a very passionate

presentation by WTA member Brooke Barton that maternity services at the Hospital are a major priority. His response seemed positive. Weipa’s governance was then a very logical discussion to have with Simon Crean as Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, and Minister for the Arts when he visited Weipa over the weekend. He provided some insight and very sound advice for our future dealings with the State Government and RTA as we progress the Governance Project commenced under the previous WTA regime. Briefings in Brisbane this Friday (July 13) with the Department of Local Government and RTA will be pivotal to ongoing deliberations in the short to medium term. Minister Crean is very keen to be kept ‘in the loop’ on those discussions understanding that the current WTA governance is not sustainable with ineligibility for significant trenches of Federal Government funding also a consequence. The Cape to Kakadu project outlined in the Weipa Community Plan (page 13, copies available form Town Office or on the web site http://www.weipatownoffice.com/) is gaining momentum with all ministers responding very positively when briefed; I hope to provide the community with feedback in the next update.

THE Jewish spiritual leaders were expected by the Lord to know their Scriptures, but over the years it had been warped and woofed by interpretations that favoured the leaders themselves, and misled the people. There’s a lesson for the church today, with regards to any of the church members that wants to be a leader in the church. Sometimes when we look at pastors giving out all that wonderful knowledge and seem to have the people all excited on the one hand, and then quiet and thoughtful on the other,

we can go “wow! That’s the job for me! But if you would like to be a church leader does not mean that it just happens. There are rules to follow. Yo u r p a s t o r a n d church elders will ask such questions like, “Did your call to be a leader come from God, or did the call come from a genuine but misleading burst of joy and love? Did some moment overtake you? How is your track record going with fellow church members? Prayerful stuff like that that will stand you in good stead, and in the end you will be thankful whether your call proves to be the real thing or

not. The Lord loves us anyway! And as the Lord Jesus is central to all Christians’ lives, he says that those who would like to be a spiritual leader in the church need to understand that they will be equipped with greater knowledge of God’s will. And because of this much more will be required of them Let’s look at Luke Ch 12 v48b, “Much is required from the person to whom much is given; much more is required from the person to whom much more is given.” God is love. – Rev Michael Connolly

CROSSWORD No. 106

SUDOKU No. 106

Your Lucky CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Memories of your childhood will be hard to put out of your mind. One incident keeps on coming back to you. Admitting this to a trusted friend will provide some needed relief. Romance. A social gaffe made by one of your friends could prove embarrassing. You will soon be able to have a good laugh, however.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You may need to find a new outlet for your excess energy. Your talents are not being appreciated properly by the people around you. You have a lot to offer: try to find someone who values your unique skills. Romance. Your partner may be on your mind a lot this week. Something which they said recently will cheer you up. Be sure to thank them for their compliment.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FOR KIDS

A friend who is behaving a little strangely may need a while to settle down. Don’t be too quick to pass judgement on their recent actions. Understanding will be the key to helping them at the moment. Romance. You may need to sort out a conflict between two of your best friends. One side will have to give in much more than the other.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find that your partner is a little apathetic. You will need to provide some encouragement to get them out of a rut. Romance. Your feelings will be running much more strongly than usual, thanks to the Moon/Pluto Midpoint which is presently moving through your sign.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Don’t let yourself be influenced by other people’s negative moods. You may be better off avoiding them this week. Romance. Both Venus and Mars are in good aspect at the moment, so you could have a very romantic evening in store. Be ready for anything!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Be careful before getting involved with someone whom you see every day at work. Things could end up getting very complicated. Romance. Both Venus and Mars are in good aspect at the moment, so you could have a very romantic evening in store.

FINDWORD No. 106 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A surprise gesture of support from a friend will change your opinion of this person for the better. There may be more to come! Romance. You may be more concerned about the way you look than about other, more important things. Now is the time for some deep self-examination.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) If the people around you can’t stand the pace you will have to carry on by yourself. Don’t let their low energy hold you back from accomplishing great things this week! Romance. A phone call during the day will be quite uninteresting at first. After a while, the mood will become warmer.

MUDDY RIVER

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) You may need to give in a little more than you would like. Don’t allow yourself to be too stubborn. Compromise on an important issue will be productive for both parties. Romance. Your love-life will be in top gear at the moment. A recent meeting will suddenly make sense.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Don’t be too hard on yourself - recent events were not your fault, and you couldn’t have done anything to prevent them. Instead, work to repair broken relationships. Romance. You have been working extremely hard recently. Try to spend some time doing things which you normally don’t have the time for.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

QUOTE OF THE DAY Your friend is the man who knows all about you and still likes you. – Elbert Hubbard Page 14 Western Cape Bulletin July 11, 2012

SOLUTIONS No. 106

Don’t put all your energy into a project which may not come to fruition. It might be more sensible to spread your risk by trying more than one option. Romance. You will be completely in touch with your partner’s emotions. This could be both a positive and negative thing: there could be some ups and downs this week!

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Don’t worry too much about what other people think. Their perceptions will not make a big difference on your future. If you manage to forget about some recent comments, your self-confidence will improve enormously. Romance. Unexpected attention from a friend will surprise you. This person may need your advice about a personal matter.

HOW good is it to be a Queenslander at the moment? The whole State has gone into celebration mode after our magnificent Queensland State of Origin team has won a seventh straight series against a very unlikeable NSW team. I think it will go down in history as one of the best games we have watched and I can proudly say I was sitting in the grandstand enjoying every little moment of this great game. Petro Cievenoceva is one of our games true gentleman and I thought it was fitting him going out a winner for the Mighty Maroons. Also on Wednesday night Queensland had another win with the Queensland Residents too good for their NSW counterparts, and the team was guided around the park graciously by a North Queensland favourite, Grant Rovelli. With State of Origin being played during the week, the NRL action was all a-buzz come Friday

night with the Bulldogs too classy for the toothless Tigers. Super Saturday produced the upset of the season with the green machine, the mighty Canberra Raiders beating the Melbourne Storm and the Warriors continued their good form with a convincing win over the Titans. Sunday arvo footy had some free-flowing footy and we witnessed the Rabbitohs bounce all over the Knights. The highly fancied Sea Eagles just added more misery to the Parramatta Eels’ season with a high scoring victory. With the final series not too far away it’s one mighty race for the top eight positions. I’ve been taking extra notice lately as I’m quite happy with my tips and just a little prediction...I’m on the rise very quickly. My top eight at this stage of the season would be 1. Melbourne Storm 2. Manly Sea Eagles 3. Canterbury Bulldogs 4. North Qld

Scotty’s AFL round-up WELL, the footy season is feeling a bit long at the moment. The Cats are wobbly, the Pies are near the top, the Eagles are flying, I can’t tip and the winter months are setting in. The weather around here has developed a distinctly winter feel as well, with a few windy, rainy days in the last week or so. Still Id rather be battling the freezing 19 degrees in my shorts and thongs than the frigid single digits in my Drizabone and gumboots any day. We had a couple of weeks away and took off up the Cape to sample some swimming and fishing. My fishing was about as convincing as Geelong on Sunday against the Suns, no luck at all. The swimming was a highlight and the time spent at the falls was well received by one and all. The Princess and The Deputy had trouble coming to terms with having to put clothes back on after a few days nuding it up in the bush. Kids in the bush are so free and easy. Have to say I spared the wardrobe a bit too, and when faced with the

“Hawthorn Undies”syndrome (yellow at the front and brown at the back) or the “Warwick Capper” red shorts sunburn on the old rear end, its an easy choice to make. The kids were relieved to get home for one reason at least - to see me throw on a pair of clean Y-fronts, ensure they would know where to look while I was talking to them, and get back to business. Management conceded the reins at home to a houseguest for the time we were away and it has to be said she did a great job of looking after the animals and making sure we got our moneys worth on the Austar subscription for the month. Such a job in fact that on our return to the abode I found the TV stuck on Fox 8 and Azrael the cat blocking up the loo on the dreaded Litter Quitter. I was not happy and had to run out the back yard to keep things moving. The cat sure made herself comfortable while we were away. As for the Three Legged Houdini, well, she probably didn’t even know we were gone. She

On Saturday the Cape Cluster competition kicked off in Weipa and it was a great day, with all the communities coming in and working together. I can say I was very proud to be part of this concept. The QRL should be highly recommended for promoting this great opportunity for these talented young men to represent their communities with honour and pride.

The Northern Pride are back in the winners circle, and with only six games remaining our born and bred locals will have to win five games to make the finals but I’m very confident this will happen under the guidance of Coach Dave Maiden and will then be one mighty force in the final series. doesn’t know her leg is missing, so what do I expect? The footy was fairly entertaining and the talk of the week, as well as how tight the ladder is, is the match review committee and the sanctions handed down to a few key players. Wellingham got five down to three for a regulation shirtfront (lucky on the discount) and Bartel let the team down with a behind the play cheapy to earn himself a couple of weeks rest. The Hawks booked themselves a spot in the top four I reckon with a massive percentage booster against the Giants. Word is that Falou will go back to league next year. Look, I wouldn’t blame him. It can’t be much fun getting smacked every week and not being able to contribute to the team. The enjoyment of sport is what starts us all off and he must be missing that, I think. A return to the game he was born into would turn that around. This week I have a clash with Puss In Boots on the big screen at the Cultural Centre up against the Cats v Pies on

Saturday night. The Deputy will be upset if we miss the cat, I will be livid if we miss the Cats. Stalemate. As usual though, Management will come up with a compromise and we’ll do it her way. I guess I’ll catch the footy on the replay on Sunday. The tips are heating up and Stevie Rehn has pulled off a blinder and tipped 9. Unbelievable effort and one to try and emulate. Honky Nuts is going to be very hard to catch, three out in front. This week I’ve gone for the Blues over the Kangas in a Friday night ripper, The Dockers over the Dees, Bombers over the Power, Suns over the Tiges in Cairns, Pies too good for the Cats, Lions to pip the Saints at home, the Crows over the Giants, Hawks too strong for the Dogs and the Eagles to win a tight one over the Swannies. I hope you are all fit and well and chat next week. Maca

a lovely mangrove jack of 50cm caught on a live bait (pictured above). This time of the year live bait seems to work better than lures, so it’s worth the effort to throw the castnet around and get some livies. There have been a few Prawns around of eating quality, with the odd Barra feeding on the Prawns. The trick is to throw into the dirty water along the edges

where the Prawns are hiding from the Barra. Bream have been caught under the Andoom bridge for the bait-ďŹ sher folk. Evans Landing is still producing hook-ups but not many being landed, with live bait out-ďŹ shing everything else, but Prawns also do all right. In the lakes there have been a few small Barra poking around but they are very ďŹ nicky due

to the shallow water. Ta c k l e w o r l d V I P members will have new monthly specials, so call in to see what’s on offer. We now have in stock the new crystal shrimp from Yozuri. They come in two sizes, 70mm and 90mm, and there are three different colours (pictured at top right). Until next week, tight lines.

plenty around but we will have to wait and see. The bottom fish should be on the go after the blow, so expectations are running high for some good captures. WIND, Wind and more wind, even the estuary anglers haven’t bothered to wet a line this week. The outside fisherman are waiting for the wind to drop to get after the Mackerel that were in plague proportions on the southern reefs, but who knows, they may be gone by the time the wind ďŹ nally drops. The same applies for the Tuna. There were

THE Weipa Range Association/SSAA Weipa held the official opening of the Andoom Rifle Range last Sunday, with ex-members coming from as far away as Sydney and Mackay to participate in the day. Grace Johns held the welcome to country on behalf of the Thankwith people, welcoming the sporting shooters to their traditional lands and informing her ancestors that there would be loud bangs but they mean no harm. About 80 people attended the official opening with the ribbon cutting ceremony performed by Grace Johns (Traditional Owner) and Geoff Tarring (SSAA state secretary). This was followed by demonstrations

of shotgun, handgun and rifle shooting by club members. The SSAA Weipa would like to thank their sponsors: Rio Tinto Alcan, Sea Swift, Quartermaine Dozers, Parr Plumbing, Emmett Contracting, NQ Blasting and Coating, Goodline, Foresight Trucks, and Whuntree Sound. Also Weipa News and Sport for the donation of a gun case for the lucky door prize, which was won by Julie and Adrian Zeimer. Thank you also to all the people who have donated their time and effort to get the range to its current status. The club will now be holding regular shoots at the Andoom Range and for further details contact David Rutherford on 0427 599 569.
