Fish dumping a safety concern

DESPITE repeated warnings about the dangers of leaving fish carcasses and bait at boat ramps and on beaches as they attract crocodiles, a Western Cape Bulletin reader and her daughter took their dog to Wallaby Beach this week and were horrified to come across the fish dumping scene pictured here. The reader said the fish, some of which were barely legal, were small Bream, Stripeys, Grass Sweetlip and Cod. She also reported the recent dumping of Queenies and Salmon at the popular fishing spot Red Beach.

“It is never a responsible act to dump fish carcasses on beaches or at boat ramps, but with so many tourists in the area at the moment everyone needs to realise that this is not acceptable,” the reader said. “As locals we know that Red Beach is a regular crocodile spot, but for now they seem to be enjoying the mud bank opposite the beach. “There is nothing stopping the crocs from coming to the beach everyone visits and fishes from, particularly if they are tempted by fish scraps left on the beach. “Leaving fish skeletons all over the beach is not very smart, or tourist friendly.”

Weipa CAN appointments AT the July meeting of the Community Advisory Network (CAN) for the Weipa Integrated Health Service (MPHS) Peter Miller was appointed the chairperson, with Jenny Aspinall as co-chairperson. The chairperson position became vacant with the resignation of Scott McCahon, following his recent appointment as chair of the Cape York Hospital and Health Board. The Community Advisory Network (CAN) is a committee which provides support to the ongoing operation and continued development of the Integrated Health Service, under its guidelines. Mr Miller said Weipa CAN requires community groups, businesses, departments and community members who are willing to be involved in community healthcare to join the committee.

“If you have a passion for health care within your community, then this is the perfect committee for you,� Mr Miller said. “ Yo u w i l l p r o v i d e information to the health service about the needs of your community and receive information regarding the operations of the IHS, as well as have the ability to voice your opinions, concerns and compliments. “Whether you are 15 or 95, we are looking for people of all ages to be part of our exciting transformation to an operational Multi-Purpose Health Service.� The CAN meets the second Wednesday of each month from 6pm at the Weipa Integrated Health Service (hospital). In a media statement released on Monday, Member for Cook and Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs David Kempton confirmed the Scheme had been cancelled. Mr Kempton said the scheme had only been funded for three months by the previous Labor government and was not working properly. “The previous government admitted that the scheme would need to be reviewed because of problems that were emerging even then,� Mr Kempton said. “I have entered into discussions with the regional air carriers and our department with a view to establishing a

new arrangement which will provide reduced airfares across the board rather than subsidised tickets for a limited number of seats. “I am also looking at increased flights between communities.� Shadow Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the decision to axe the Local Fares Scheme was made by a “Brisbane-centric� state government, and represented “extremely bad news� for Torres Strait, NPA and Cape York residents. “Affordable air travel in the Cape and the Torres Strait is not a luxury, but is essential, and the scheme helped cut the cost of fares for people travelling to their nearest service centre, either Horn Island or Cairns,� Mr Pitt said. “The majority of the travel is used by locals to access health services including maternity services.� Mr Pitt said that, apart from health needs, the scheme was also used by Outer Island residents and those living on the NPA and Cape York who travel to access education and job opportunities, for training purposes, and to attend culturally important events such as

FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has called on the State Government to come clean about its “agenda to sacrifice regional Queensland� after the axing of another Far North Queensland project. Mr Katter was commenting on the State Government announcement that the Low Fare Scheme for air travel in FNQ would be scrapped. The subsidised, flat-rate fares were introduced by the Bligh government in January this year to assist residents in remote areas, who rely heavily on air services, to access health, education and employment opportunities.

Mr Kempton said: “All bookings made under the scheme prior to July 26, 2012, will be honoured even if flights are to occur after this date. “No further bookings will be taken from this date, however if you already have a ticket that you purchased on or before July 25, 2012, this ticket will still be valid. “Locals in the Cape York and Torres Strait will be able to access all other fares offered by

Mr Pitt described the government decision as “cold-hearted�. “It is really important for people to be able to travel to Cairns for funerals, health services and the like without breaking the bank,� he said. Mr Katter said: “It’s yet another sorry example of regional Queensland being sacrificed under the tired, old excuse that ‘Labor left us broke’ so that the former Brisbane City Mayor can concentrate on building pleasure domes in the parliamentary precinct. “The former Brisbane City Mayor, who now heads up this state’s LNP Government, needs to come clean on just how much he intends to strip from the very regions he declared so important to Queensland’s growth and development prior to the election.�

Brisbane visit for local ranger MAPOON Land & Sea Ranger Geraldine Mamoose and Ewamian acting ranger co-ordinator Steve Wargent travelled to Brisbane during NAIDOC week in early July to promote the work of the Indigenous Land & Sea Rangers. Geraldine, who will complete a Certificate III in Land Conservation this year, said it was a great honour to be selected to represent the Mapoon rangers and her community and despite the cold weather she really enjoyed the trip. “It was a pretty full-on schedule but it was such a wonderful opportunity to provide presentations to such a wide variety of people. “Everyone we talked to was fascinated with the way we do things in Mapoon, particularly with the junior rangers.� During their visit Geraldine and Steve met with Andrew Powell, Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Glen Elmes, Minister for Aboriginal, Torres Strait, Indigenous and Multicultural Affairs. provided details of their work to government staff, and visited Parliament House with Indigenous liaison officer Brett Nutley. The pair also visited Australia Zoo which has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Land & Sea Ranger program on training, education and shared information. While at the zoo the rangers were introduced during the crocodile show at the Croco-

seum and observed zebras, giraffes, elephants and echidnas. Australia Zoo staff and public also had an opportunity to meet with the rangers and talk about their experiences. “I am very passionate about my work as a Land & Sea Ranger and my family has supported me every step of the way,� Geraldine said. “It was both an honour and a pleasure to relate stories of my work to the people we met.�

Book donation to Napranum Safe House NAPRANUM Safe House received a donation of 100 books last week, thanks to an online shopping trip by former Napranum Farm manager, Sue Bonaccorsi. DELVING into the secrets of the human brain may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for gifted Weipa student Jack Taylor it was a challenge he was ready to meet. Fifteen-year old Jack is currently studying Year 10 through the Western Cape College and Cairns and Brsbane Distance Education and was recently offered a position in a three-day Junior Scientia challenge run by the University of New South Wales. The Scientia Challenge Program is designed for gifted and talented high school students in Years 7 to 10 and the program features a range of workshops from a number of academic disciplines taught over three days. The courses were developed and presented by academics of the UNSW, who are considered

the leaders in their fields. The courses are not vocational in nature; rather, they are designed to stimulate the interests of gifted students. The level of difficulty in the courses is aimed at Years 11 and 12, thus providing a rigorous and challenging program for gifted students. The program also provides the opportunity for gifted students to socialise with like-minded children of similar interests. Jack opted for the “Brain in Health and Disease Workshop” run by Professor Ken Ashwell,of the UNSW Department of Medical Sciences and says he found the workshop absolutely fascinating. “I have an interest in the medical field so the workshop gave me an opportunity to broaden my horizons of not only the medical

MORE than three hundred Indigenous artists representing 24 Indigenous art centres and commercial galleries in North Queensland are set to showcase a range of brilliant new work at this year’s Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF). To be held on the waterfront at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal from August 17 – 19, 2012, the three-day festival will feature both visual and performance art and will include ghost net art created during recent GhostNet Australia workshops conducted in Cape York communities (see story page 9). According to Avril Quaill, artistic director for CIAF and a former curator of the National Gallery of Art, CIAF provides a platform for recognition for Queensland Indigenous artists, giving them a chance to go into global markets. “If you think Indigenous art is all about dots from the desert, CIAF will significantly change that view,� she said. “Indigenous artists in North Queensland have their own art styles, traditions and languages, with influences from the environments in which they live. “The colours are stronger and the themes are different. “Whereas Australia’s Central Desert art is based upon browns, ochres and siennas stemming from the natural pigments found in the middle of Australia, here it's the brilliance and iridescence of the rainforest, the reef, the islands and Queensland’s strong light. It's very alive and stylistically exciting."

General manager for CIAF, Alison Copley adds that the festival has a role in injecting pride into the Indigenous community by creating commercially viable artists. “By getting their names out there, getting their works into galleries around the world, CIAF is giving artists and art workers access to vocational pathways in the arts,� said Ms Copley. “When it works, it has a spinoff effect into the community. It’s more than just aesthetic reproduction, contemporary expressions of culture through art contributes to the holistic well-being of a community.� Ms Quaill said this year’s CIAF will appeal to everyone from dedicated collectors to those who want to add visual colour to their homes. “CIAF is a chance for people, artists and visitors alike to gather in one place for three days to see a sampling of the best (art) from each of the centres, all in one spot, without having to travel to the remote regions of Queensland,� she said. “They will be surprised by the affordability, especially of the new prints by major artists like Dennis Nona and Brian Robinson. It’s a chance to get in on the ground floor and purchase new work by both major and emerging artists.� In the three years since its inception, CIAF has attracted some 33,500 visitors to Cairns and injected more than $4.3 million into the economy. Additional animal permit cost is “outrageous�

WEIPA Town Authority – I would like this question answered: How is it that certain streets in the Rocky Point area are still without kerbing and channelling, and even street lighting, but Golf Links Estate can get footpaths? Also, when the residential campus was built it was said that the drainage was going to be fixed in the large gutter there and a kiosk was going to be built. I must need my glasses cleaned, for I am certain that the tuckshop ladies were serving students under a canvas tarp. I wonder if Weipa Town Authority came down to help the ladies them move all the food and tables on the day (probably not). Then, we all had to become mountain goats to climb onto the road to access Tamarind Drive, and the houses in Rocky Point that don’t have kerbing, channelling or lighting, or even a footpath to walk on. It must be nice to live with all the amenities the Golf Links Estate people have. Resident of Rocky Point

I AM writing to express my outrage at the new cost associated with the “Permit to keep an additional animal�. I r e a d M r M c C u l k i n ’s comments (sales pitch) in last week’s Western Cape Bulletin and noted that the actual fee was not mentioned. What was mentioned was that the fee directly relates to the cost associated with obtaining the permit, as I understood it. That is ridiculous – $500 per year to keep an additional animal. For that price I would expect someone from the WTA to pop around to my home every evening to feed, water and pick up that animal’s excrement. I believe Mr McCulkin said the intention of the WTA is to “improve animal welfare�. In my opinion the exact opposite will happen; if people are not registering their extra animals for $150, why would they register them for $500 per year? I predict animals will either be shot or be left to roam in the bush, and become feral pests. I am a responsible dog owner

but I cannot afford an extra $500 per year and I believe the WTA cannot justify the cost. Shame on you WTA and Mr McCulkin for a poorly thoughtout money grab. If this is the sort of leadership we can expect in the future Weipa is going to be a very unpleasant place to live, and bring on the next election. I have also taken the time to have a look at the Cairns Regional Council excess dogs and cats application. The CRC fee is only $228.30 per year - clearly their administration costs are cheaper! Weipa teachers support Gonski ON July 24, teachers at Western Cape College Weipa Campus showed their support for the Federal Government’s “Gonski Review� into funding for schools across the nation. Released in February 2012, the Review, which was run by Mr David Gonski, identified a severe shortfall in funding for all schools across the country to the tune of $5 billion a year. Dealing with grief and depression

UNFORTUNATELY most of us have experienced people passing away through sickness, accidents, suicide and even murder. No matter the circumstances, in pretty much all cases, it leaves behind a pool of loved ones that will have to deal with the loss of that person. I am not a psychologist, nor have I been trained as a grief counsellor, but I do understand what grief is, as I have experienced it myself. I also believe it is important to bring these topics up to ensure the health and well-being of the community. I recently spoke to David Lonergan, psychologist with the Weipa Public Health Service regarding grief and depression. “When a person experiences loss through suicide or murder of a family member there is usually an explosion of shock and emotions that can test the resilience of even the toughest souls,” David says. “Grief will likely follow common themes but will vary according to each individuals, age and background, and their type of attachment to the person lost.” David advises that professional help can be very beneficial, alongside natural family and community responses. “Attending a workshop or seeking out professional counselling is not usually about bringing an end to the grieving, but it can help a person or family learn to live with, and better manage their loss over time,” he says. “Important special dates are likely to be challenging to deal with and provide markers for people to learn to assert their grieving in healthy ways. “In my view grief is a normal, natural reaction intuitively managed by most people amidst close friends, family and community, and if the grieving is stuck then people might benefit from a helping professional hand, to learn how to live on with the loss of a loved one, or to work out how best to manage the grief,” David says. “Losing a loved one in more tragic circumstances can be a very disturbing and challenging experience for people to deal with. There will be a variety of reactions - some may begin isolating themselves for a short time, some keep talking about it over and over, yet others may let it out with a big

night out.” “All these ways to deal with grief are okay as long as we are coming back to deal with it within us eventually.” According to David there is no specific time frame on how long grief should last, or if it actually ends at all. “Normal grief has no specific time frame, yet it is likely to be characterised by intense and constant change of emotions which may make you feel like you are ‘all over the shop’ - a constant up and down, with gradual improvement over time as the loss moves from centre stage in a person’s emotional, spiritual and mental life,” he says. “Some people respond to the death of a loved one with their own sense of hopelessness and can begin to feel very low and ask ‘what is the point of life? “A sense of ongoing purpose needs to be re-established for some people.” This is likely as you are being forced by the loss to redefine your life in the absence of the loved one and try to reason the death of another. This is not a time to give up on your life, as the life of another has been so valuable to you. If you feel that the depression and low feeling is constant over a long period of time, you may be sliding off into what is called clinical depression. You might feel your confidence is reduced and every day tasks become hard to handle. You find yourself isolating yourself from the rest of the world and the ‘cloud’ over your head keeps following you wherever you go. You can stay days in bed and forget to look after yourself physically and mentally. It is at this stage you may need professional help and should seek advice. There are several organisations able to give you professional support by staying anonymous and free of charge. Don’t hesitate to contact these as they can help you over the phone. www. Lifeline.org.au have a 24-hour hotline or you can call 13 11 14 or contact www. beyondblue-men.com.au Unfortunately, there are many of us who feel that they need to deal with this on their own and do not feel inclined to talk to a stranger on the phone. There is face-to-face help available in Weipa. There are doctors and a mental health team available at Weipa hospital as well as the visiting fortnightly psychology clinic and child and youth counselling services. If your doctor and you decide psychological support would be useful a referral can be made. For immediate concerns the mental health team are available, and can be accessed by attending/phoning the Weipa Health Service. It must have been a terrible shock for the disciples when Jesus told them that the magnificent stones and other precious things that made the Temple look so grand and permanent would all be thrown down to the ground. It did happen but the Lord knew that this was all in God’s Master Plan of salvation, as God’s presence in the Most Holiest of Holy place in the Temple would shift from being a place where people gather to worship, into his people’s spirit themselves! What seems like a switch in God’s plan was in actual fact God’s Plan of salvation from way, way

back, and it’s written in many sections of the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) foretelling that Jews and Gentiles will become one family of God. Zechariah for instance in verses 10-11 tells of one type of Presence; “The Lord said, ‘Sing for joy, people of Jerusalem! I am coming to live among you!” At that time many nations will come to the Lord and become his people. He will live among you, and you will know that he has sent me to you. In the new Presence Romans Ch 8 v 16 says, “God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirit to declare that we are God’s children.”

1 Corinthians Ch 3 vs 16 says, “Surely you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you!” So the wall that separated the Jewish people from the Gentiles would be torn down, not only in history but in spirit as well, making the two races of peoples one people through Jesus Christ. The Tribal mark of this new united people of God is the Holy Spirit living within them (that all in the spirit world can see) and Christian behavior as taught by the Holy Spirit shows the world who we belong to. Ghost netters weave their magic GHOSTNETS Australia representatives have been busy in Cape York communities over the past month conducting ghost net workshops. Workshop facilitators Cecile Williams and Gina Allain, along with GhostNets Australia arts project director Sue Ryan held a two-week workshop in Mapoon which they said was well attended. “There were over 50 people involved in the workshops as well as students from the Mapoon State School,� Ms Ryan said. “The students created a hanging for the school which should look fantastic when it is hung. “We also had two artists from Aurukun attend the workshop

on an artist exchange program.� The Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers building is now adorned with a ghost net hanging created at the workshop. Ms Williams said both workshops had been extremely successful and were a wonderful way for community members to share stories while weaving magical creations from what was once marine debris. A second workshop was held at the Napranum Women’s Centre last week. Some of the ghost net art created at the Cape York GhostNet Australia workshops will be displayed at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, to be held at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal from August 17 – 19, 2012.

IT seems that diabetes is a word we hear lots of times nowdays – I was inspired by a mother I met recently who is working to deal with it in her family. Tonnes of marine debris removed from Chilli Beach TANGAROA Blue and Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) were joined by around 60 willing helpers last Friday at the annual Chilli Beach clean-up. Children from Lockhart River State School grades 3 and 4/5 joined community volunteers and tourists in a three-hour emu-bob from the northern end of the popular beach. The Cook Shire Council donated the use of their baler to the clean-up and plastics were bagged separately for compacting and recycling. The volunteers en-

joyed a barbecue lunch following the clean-up while Heidi Taylor and her crew weighed the marine debris collected. The Lockhart River students were also presented with T-shirts as a momento of their 2012 Chilli Beach clean-up efforts. A total of 1.2 tonnes of rubbish was weighedin from the three-hour collection alone. Tangaroa Blue, CVA and southern volunteers commenced the cleanup of the entire beach from the southern end on Thursday, July 26 and worked through until Monday, July 30.

Bunnies hop all over the NRL WHAT a fantastic weekend round of NRL footy. It was a very entertaining round and our excitement machines, like Ben Barba, Matty Bowen and Brett Morris showed us how good they really are. These guys certainly know how to score points and I’m sure there will be more thrilling days ahead. The Rabbitohs are the form side of the competition at the moment and time will only tell if this history-making club can win their first premiership in 41 years. Round 21 once again has been a tipster’s nightmare - my goodness. Friday night saw the Titans outclass the Roosters, while the Dragons have kept their final’s hopes alive with a convincing win over the Storm. The Storm have now lost

five consecutive games, which is very unusual, but I am sure they will be back in the winner’s circle sooner than later. The Bulldogs just beat a very determined Cowboys team but Ben Barba showed why he is the form player in the NRL at the moment with some exhilarating footy. Manly Sea Eagles had a come-from-behind win against the Warriors while the Panthers produced another upset by winning in extra time against the toothless Sharks. Wayne Bennett and his Newcastle Knights are starting to find some good form with a very good win over the Raiders. The Rabbitohs continued their climb up the ladder into second spot with a smashing win over the depleted Tigers. The Broncos were woeful at

Scotty’s AFL round-up Well, we had a mutiny on the weekend and for once it wasn’t me with the Moody Blues, but The Princess and The Deputy on the receiving end of a dodgy Management decision, appealing to the umpires for things to be reconsidered. But, just like the multicoloured Muppets who are about as easy to reason with as a wounded bull, once Management had made the call there was no reconsidering. The issue at hand was the discovery early on Sunday morning of the 24 channels of Olympics action available on Austar for the next month. This wouldn’t normally present too much of a kerfuffle except for the fact that Management had executed the divestment of our spare tele during the week (we hadn’t used it for six months) followed by the assumption of control of the remote control by Management. Cries of “Where are the kids shows?” were met with the dead bat of “These ARE kids shows, now sit down and watch the gymnastics”. This response was warmly received by The Princess who has recently laid claim to the title of backyard champion in the discipline of hanging upside down

off the Hills Hoist, a skill not too easy to master (or watch for that matter). The Deputy on the other hand, reacted in a manner reminiscent to my response when they took The Goodies off the air in 1986. He was ropeable, and proceeded to tell us all about it for about two and a half minutes, by which time he had become totally distracted by the batman suit lying on the floor and insisted we play superhero Lego wars. And so ended the mutiny that was remarkable for its brevity as well as its intensity. If I can get him to concentrate on the footy for long enough I’m sure he’ll start barracking for the Cats soon. (He can barrack for whomever he likes of course, just if he doesn’t barrack for Geelong then Santa won’t come). The Nick Natanui show kicked off on the weekend, and for those who missed it, do yourselves a favour and jump online to see the highlights package of his game. Seriously good and just magic to watch. If he could do that sort of thing consistently he would be the best player in the game. The Hawks flexed their muscles again

Northern Pride had a big win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls on Sunday and will remain in finals contention once again. I’m sure these guys would like to send coach David Maiden out a winner as well as achieving the highs of another premiership. On a sad note the Northern Pride coach will not be with the club in 2013 but I’m sure his great knowledge will still be available in the Far North. Round 22 only gets better with some cracking games and it all starts on Friday with the Roosters trying to stop the Dragons’ finals run. Super Saturday will see Storm looking to get back into

the winner’s circle against the Panthers, while the Knights and Bulldogs game should be a ripper, and the Sea Eagles travel to Townsville to take on a red-hot Cowboys. Sunday arvo footy will have three games with the Warriors and Sharks playing in New Zealand. Game two will see the Raiders and Broncos do battle, while the Titans will be out to stop the Rabbitohs juggernaut. Monday night footy will see the Tigers and Eels do battle in Western Sydney. and set up a mouthwatering showdown against the Cats this Friday night. I think this might sort the Cats out though and good luck to anyone who meets the Hawks in September. North and Collingwood had big wins and I can’t see the light for the Demons at all. They need a clean-out and I hope Mark Neeld knows what he is doing. The Tigers are challenging the belief of their supporters for the 30th year running with finding yet another way to lose a tight one. They are reminding me of the Cats in the ‘80s and early ‘90s with their predictable unpredictability. Freo struggled to a win and the Dogs are shot to bits. They, along with the Demons, must be the biggest disappointments of the year. At last it seems some common sense was found at the match review committee with the Thompson bump on Johnson going through without concern. Now I think that is the right call, but stack it up against others that have caused players to miss weeks and you see the inconsistency in the system. Things that are part of the

game can be unfortunate but just that, a part of the game, and not worthy of rubbing players out for things that they instinctively do. This week will sort a few teams out starting with the Cats and the Hawks in the grudge match on Friday. I think the Hawks will win for the first time since the 2008 GF and the Cats will find it hard to recover. North will flog the Dogs, GWS might have half a chance against the Power on Saturday in Sydney, The Eagles will put the Dockers to bed for the year in the derby, and Collingwood will shut down any Saints momentum. I worry about the Demons against the Suns on Sunday, although in Melbourne they should be okay, Sydney should silence the Blues and the Crows would expect to rebound against the Bombers. All that will tell us a bit more about the likely make-up of the top eight and get us another week closer to September action. Happy tipping and chat next week. Cheers Maca

FORMER English Super League star Jason Demetriou has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Skill360 Northern Pride for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Demetriou, who is currently player-coach of UK Championship side Keighley Cougars, has signed a two-year deal in a real coup for the Cairnsbased Intrust Super Cup club. The 36-year-old Aussie, who captained English Super League side Wakefield Trinity Wildcats for five seasons from 2006-2010 and coached Keighley to a Championship 1 grand final win in his first season in charge in 2011, said he was thrilled to be joining the Pride. “After a long playing career in the Super League and a successful start to my coaching career, I see the Pride as a great opportunity to further my development as a rugby league coach at the elite level,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to returning to Australia and working with everyone at the Pride to not only bring success for the team on the field, but also to further develop our great game throughout far north Queensland. “I have already watched footage of the Pride in action, and I can’t wait to meet the boys to start preparing for the 2013 season.” Demetriou will replace outgoing Pride coach David Maiden when he starts at Barlow Park on October 3.

Pride Chief Executive Officer Chris Sheppard said it was a great day for the club to sign someone of Demetriou’s calibre. “I promised Pride fans at the start of this process that we would leave no stone unturned to find the best man for the job,” said Sheppard. “This included not only looking for suitable candidates around Australia, but also expanding our search internationally. “I have no doubt that we’ve found the best. Jason has vast experience at the very highest level in the English game, and will bring so much to our great club. “He has played in a Challenge Cup semi-final, been voted Man of Steel for his club on numerous occasions, made the Super League Dream Team, and has delivered immediate success to Keighley during his coaching career to date. “He has shown quite clearly during his time at Keighley that he can develop a team and deliver success. “He is hugely knowledgeable about the game, extremely hard working, and we look forward to having him with us for the forthcoming season.” Sheppard said one of Demetriou’s tasks when he takes the reigns will be to work closely with local coaching talent. “Along with developing the structure for rugby league to blossom at junior and senior playing level across the region, Jason will also use his vast expe-

RECREATIONAL fishers in Cape York are reminded to brush up on the rules for cast netting and bait collection in local waterways. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Robert Ibell said it was illegal to use cast nets in all Queensland freshwaters. “Freshwaters include stocked impoundments, lakes, table drains and lagoons,” he said. “On-the-spot fines of $500 apply to those caught doing the wrong thing.” Mr Ibell said fishers in the area should also be aware of the rules surrounding bait. “The use of freshwater fish and crustaceans, such as spangled perch, redclaw, freshwater prawns and yabbies as bait (dead or alive), is prohibited outside of their natural environment or range,” he said.

NQ COWBOYS superstars Matty Bowen and Johnathan Thurston have urged Indigenous and non-Indigenous students around the far north to attend school as often as possible. Bowen and Thurston made the comments when they were special guests at a function in Townsville on July 25. They spoke to 150 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Townsville’s Kirwan High School after being part of a program which increased school attendance. “I went to Abergowrie College and we had rules where we had to wake at a certain time in the morning and make our beds before breakfast. We couldn’t wag school and good attendance at school gives you the best chance of ďŹ nding a good career,â€? Bowen said. Thurston said education was so important for high school students as they approached an age where they would soon be looking for work. “If you get a job and ďŹ nish an apprenticeship you should strive to own a business at some stage,â€? Thurston said. One of the biggest high schools in Queensland with 2200 students including 450 Indigenous youths, Kirwan High joined forces with the North Queensland Cowboys for the “Every Day Counts’ program which boosted Indigenous student attendance at school. The three-week term two initiative rewarded improved attendance rates with student incentives such as inspirational

THIS week we have had our ups and downs with the weather, but again there were a few fish about. Before I start my report this week I would like to help some of the novice anglers. I often get asked “why do some other anglers catch more fish than me?� and the answer is that the other anglers are more tuned-in to the surroundings. They use their ears and eyes better than most, they look for the baitfish trying to escape from the predators or they hear the boof or splash of the feeding fish. So it pays to use your senses to observe what is happening around you while you are fishing. Try and think like a fish - know where your quarry like to hunt and position your bait or lure in the strike zone. In summer you may look for shady spots to cast to and in winter the fish may be on the flats trying to warm up, so basically think like a fish and take note of what is going on around you. I bumped into Ben Bright and he’s just come back from the east coast where he competed in a billfish comp and took out champion team, it was his team and daylight second. He also mentioned that Brynn Philliskirk was out on the leads when a whale shark came up beside his boat and I’m hoping to see a photo. This is a rare event and hopefully

it won’t be the last time these magnificent creatures visit us. Tammy Teirney and family pulled some lovely fish out of the Mission River this week, mainly Queenfish but caught Barra up to 98cms as well. They also ventured wide off Pera Point for some big Tuskies and Fingermark. They only got a few under-size Mackerel and surface fish were absent.

There were big schools of Bream between Roberts Creek and the Waldron during the week and they were taking artificial and bait. The two bridges are still producing fish for the shorebased anglers including Bream, Salmon and Barra. Red Beach has also been giving up a few Barra for the live bait fisherman.

There has been plenty of Saratoga up in the fresh water of the Wenlock and a few big cherabin and red claw.I have not had any reports from Mapoon or the Pennefather areas. So if you are travelling offshore keep your eyes on the lookout for the whale shark and give it a wide berth if you see it. ‘Til next week, tight lines. – China
