Weipa Bowls Club general manager, Nick Prus will be bucking-out at the Weipa Bullride to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service,.
Bucking-out for charity THE annual Weipa Bullride is fast approaching and for one prospective cowboy the ride of his life will assist others on what could be a ride for their lives. Weipa Bowls Club general manager Nick Prus is stepping into the bullriding ring on August 25 to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Nick has never ridden half a tonne of bucking bull before but says it is something that has been on his “to do list for quite some time. “It is something I have had on my bucket list so I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to ‘tick it off’ and raise money for the RFDS at the same time. “I am asking people to sponsor me $5 for every second I manage to stay on the bull, with a maximum of eight seconds, Nick said. Riding in the novice category Nick says he is aware there is an element of danger involved but is up to the challenge. “I am preparing myself mentally and physically and I think I will go alright.

I am really looking forward to what I hope will be the ride of my life and raising money for such a worthy cause. Weipa Bullride Association’s Steve Fairbrother said he was pleased with Nick’s fundraising nomination and hoped he enjoyed his ride. “It’s a terrific thing he’s doing and I hope people get behind him and support both Nick and the RFDS, he said. The Weipa Bullride Association will again be holding a free rodeo school on the Saturday morning of the Bullride (August 25) and Steve encourages not only children but any novice riders to attend. “We will have the barrel strung-up as it was last year but we will also have a mechanical bull at the rodeo school. The instruction is free so it’s well worth picking up a few tips from the experts before hitting the ring. Steve also pointed out that their will be bullriding gear, including safety equipment, available for hire for $10 for anyone wishing to ride. A sponsorship form is available at the Weipa Bowls Club for anyone interested in supporting Nick’s ride.

IT seems to be Silly Season again, when our newspapers are full of unlikely stories that make you pause for thought, while you ask yourself “Has the world gone crazy? That is exactly how I felt when I heard of Cairns Police doing their bit to boost tourist numbers by staging a mud wrestling contest at the Esplanade. Seems a possibly naughty man tried to escape the police
'RJ RI WKH PRQWK C.A.P.S.
by running out onto Cairns pristine waterfront beach, which everyone else knows is not sand but dark, glutinous mud of the very finest sort. Cue the lights, cue the music, and our boys in blue sprinted out to catch him. Except the sprint rapidly became a squelch, and the neatly pressed blue shirts disappeared under a thick layer of mud. Before long, tourists were lining the strand and clicking
their cameras at a group of nearly indistinguishable mudmen struggling in a pile. It really was quite a show, with the home side taking time out to pull each other out of the mud’s sucking embrace before getting on with the job on hand, or sinking waist deep themselves. More and more tourists appeared with more and more cameras. The victorious team was applauded as they reached firm ground again and were hosed down by a fire truck called in for the purpose. Great show, guys. Great effort, but here’s a tip. Mud wrestling works much better if you use young ladies in bikinis. Remember that for next time, and it will really be worth passing the hat around. What else? You’ll never believe it, but the Sainted Tony Abbott, Australian candidate
for the next papal vacancy, has been reading Fifty Shades of Grey. This is a strange piece of ‘mommy porn’ featuring a young woman who enslaves herself to a rich businessman and, in three tedious volumes, goes on and on and on about how it feels. Really? Our Tony indulging in sleazy feminine stuff like that? Then again, the book’s hero is very big on domination, on whips and chains, on spanking, on total control and domination of the victim/ heroine. Ah-ha! Now I understand his fascination. He has been lying on the beach daydreaming about controlling and dominating, with a side order of spanking and hand-cuffs thrown in. If only he could get his party colleagues to see things his way...

WCC students enjoy Challenge Games ON Monday, July 23, six Western Cape College students, two teachers, and a parent travelled to Townsville for the Challenge Games. More than 800 students from Mackay to Weipa and as far west ast Mount Isa gathered for the two-day event which has been running for more than 16 years. The Challenge Games provides two days of fun, friendship and participation in a range of sport and fun activities for school students who have a disability. These activities include running, jumping, throwing and team events plus many other fun and novelty activities. Through invitation, there is an opportunity for students to compete at a higher level (regional or state) in formal track and field events. Teacher Michael Hicks and head of special education Nicole Dearling were extremely proud of the way the six students represented Western Cape College whilst at the games, and around Townsville. “All of the students partici-

“Visitors heading up the Cape know that once they reach the top they have to turn around and travel the same way back along the unsealed Peninsula Development Road and sometimes this can be a disincentive to them travelling,” Mr Entsch explained. “In the Northern Territory there are similar issues. “So, the thought process was then, why not create a unique circuit, incorporating a drive and sail outback experience that could become one of the ‘Great Australian Journeys’?” The car ferry would take around two days to travel each leg between Weipa, Gove and Darwin, possibly stopping at Groote Eylandt, and would feature accommodation and meals on board. In effect, a short cruise holiday during which people - and vehicles - could join and disembark the ferry at each point.” Mr Entsch said the concept was still in the early stages, but initial responses had been extremely positive. And with the natural envi-

ronment, outdoor activities and indigenous heritage being very strong in both regions, he foresees huge potential for tourism. “The gulf is a fantastic place to go fishing, there’s scope for adventure tourism, and what a way to showcase the fabulous indigenous history of both areas,” Mr Entsch said. “It’s also significant in that it provides Weipa with an opportunity to diversify its income base and build on its emerging adventure tourism industry.” Mr Entsch travelled to Darwin last week with Weipa Town Authority Chairman Peter McCulkin (pictured top right) to meet NT counterparts David Tollner, the Shadow Minister for Business and Employment for the NT government, Leader of the Opposition Terry Mills and Natasha Griggs, the Federal Liberal MP for Solomon. Mr McCulkin said he has spoken to mayors and CEOs from neighbouring councils, with the Regional Organisation of Councils of Cape York (ROCCY) unanimously endorsing the project.

Nhulunbuy Labor MP Lynne Walker has also contacted Mr Entsch to offer her backing, as bipartisan support would be crucial to move the project forward. “This is a dynamic project with Cape-wide ramifications,” Mr McCulkin said. “It’s not just about funnelling more tourists through Weipa and the region but also about generating business opportunities and economic growth.” At the meeting, the group committed to establishing a working party, after the NT elections in

AN inventive concept to establish a ‘Cape-to-Kakadu’ vehicle ferry between Weipa, Gove and Darwin is riding a wave of momentum, gaining support from all corners of Northern Australia. The idea came to light as an “aspirational” element in the Weipa Town Authority’s recent Community Plan, with Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch (pictured below) a strong backer.
August, to investigate the project further - including the financial feasibility. “The key is to have a freight component,” Mr Entsch said. “Freight is what makes the Sea Swift service work from Cairns up to Bamaga and Horn Island - it can’t work with passengers alone so we have to look at opportunities there. “The concept of car and passenger travel has proven to be incredibly successful with Sea Swift, with bookings needing to be made up to 12 months in advance to secure travel dates.” “We can also explore the possibility of having a shipping company based on the Western Cape or possibly collaboration with existing operators,” added Mr McCulkin. “And another major player in the process will potentially be Rio Tinto given that they have business interests in Weipa and Nhulunbuy and are owners of the wharf infrastructure at both ports, and have significant links with Darwin.” Mr McCulkin said the Cape to Kakadu link was an obvious one for the mining company and he has already raised the idea of applying for support through Rio’s Regional Economic Development strategy, which helps ‘host’ communities achieve long-term growth and diversification. “The RED strategy is currently rolled out globally but is yet to be trialled at a site in Australia, so with such a strong regional aspect to this project - and right across the Top End - why wouldn’t they play a role?” he asked.

Public support at DIAC community forum THE Department of Immigration and Citizenship hosted an open Public Forum on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the Weipa Town Authority Council Chambers which was attended by approximately 36 people. During the evening, Regional Managers Allan Davis and Scott Matheson, and Scherger Immigration Detention Centre Manager Mat Rogers provided an overview of the centre’s operations, their
commitment to the local community and keen interest in ongoing engagement. Minister’s Council on Asylum Seekers and Detention (MCASD) member Ms Kerrin Benson also provided an overview of why people seek asylum from Australia together with a video presentation on the journey of a Rohingyan refugee. Public feedback was very supportive of the ongoing operation
of the Department in the region with comments made that the centre had provided opportunity for the community during a time when RioTinto had terminated over 100 employees and the majority of contractor engagements. The Weipa Town Authority estimates that the Department contributes over $5 million annually to the local economy.

Each workshop participant completed an assessment of personal values and identification of life skills, leading to improved further educational and employment opportunities, and greater participation and retention in the workforce. The “Develop with Dignity initiative is a whole of community change program which brings together community leaders, commerce, government and service providers and has been fundamental to the development of the Napranum 10-Year Community Plan. launch sites have been announced in South Australia, ACT and Tasmania, and Victoria and New South Wales have come to the table with new funding for launch sites in their states. “That’s because they all recognise now is a golden opportunity to deliver fundamental change to the way disability services are provided in our country. “I have had countless phone calls, letters and emails in the last week from local people – people with disability, mums
and dads of children with disability, carers, families, disability service organisations, the list goes on – expressing their desperation for Premier Newman to join with other states and be part of an NDIS. “Unfortunately it has become clear that the Queensland Government doesn’t view people with disability as a priority. Senator McLucas said that Premier Newman doesn’t seem to be serious about establishing an NDIS. “He’s hasn’t com-
mitted a single cent and didn’t even submit a bid to have a launch site in Queensland. “It is this lack of effort that demonstrates he is not serious about helping people with disability. “Budgets can be difficult but they are about setting priorities. If Mr Newman can’t find the money for Queensland to have a launch site and be part of this historic reform, it is a reflection on where his priorities lie. “I urge Mr Kempton
to listen to his constituents and tell Premier Newman that the time is now. “The Australian Government, along with other states and territories, have made the choice to be part of this historic disability reform; it is time Queensland steps up. “The Federal Government is making a $1 billion investment in the launch of an NDIS; we are prepared to do the heavy lifting to get this done.
Getting active at professional development course Alf Wilson story & pic
A LARGE group of Cape York Community members from Napranum, Northern Peninsula Area, Aurukun, Kowanyama, Hope Vale, Coen and Normanton attended professional development courses in Cairns on July 28. They were supported by the Cairns Indigenous Business Unit of the Queensland’s Police Youth Welfare Association. The 27 employees and community members are linked to the Community Activities Program through Education (CAPE) and the Indigenous Communities Sport and Recreation Officers Program (ICSROP) which are PCYC Sport and Recreation programs. These are currently being delivered throughout Cape York and Northern Queensland. Participants were given the opportunity to attend the Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program which is a sporting accreditation initiative developed by the State
The participants at the development courses in Cairns.
Government’s Department of Sports and Recreation. The program provided free accreditation and training to participants throughout Cairns and Cape York in various coaching and officiating courses including sports first aid, basketball, soccer, gamesbased, swimming and water safety, and rugby league. Cape PCYC Program Branch Operations Manager Nicole Assan said Cape York participants travelled many hundreds of kilometres to attend. “Prior to attending the training there was some
pre-course work in Basic Coaching Principles that the attendees had to undertake via the Australian Sports Commission website. “On the day sessions were divided into two training components’ a theory side and a practical side which suited the remote location attendees as they excelled with course content, Ms Assan said. Healthy salad rolls, sandwiches and fruits for morning tea and lunch was provided to all participants and as an unpredicted result a networking and sharing of ideas among these participants occurred
paving the way for future collaborative programs and activities amongst the different CAPE York Locations and PCYC sport and recreation programs. Sheree Hoswell Small Grants Co-ordinator of the PCYC Indigenous Business Unit mentioned that this support was made possible through funding received from the Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA). This funding contributed to all of the travel and accommodation required to have these participants attend the course. The result of all of this is through the attendances to initiatives like this capacity is increased, knowledge is gained and the Sport and Recreation Programs that PCYC deliver throughout Cape York is enhanced. All the participants have now travelled back to their remote communities throughout NQ and Cape York where they are keen to transfer some of the knowledge they have gained in Cairns back to their communities.

Good Life with Jeany Schall
Namaste! Yoga in Weipa WHAT do you think of when you hear the word “yoga”? A bunch of hippies sitting in a circle singing Ohm? Not too far off if you go to a yoga teacher training with advanced teachers. Just recently I came back from a Jivamukti teacher training. Practicing yoga poses, chanting and studying ancient texts is just what I did on the other side of the world with 70 fellow yoginis from 18 different countries at the other end of the world. But I can tell you that yoga is much more than challenging poses and chanting. It is a lifestyle more and more people choose to live by. It is a huge thing around the world now. I could list neverending benefits one can gain by practicing yoga. And I am not alone: There are millions of people all over the world practicing in studios around the world, in their homes, on beaches, in ashrams and retreats. So what is it that makes me and others so crazy about it? There was a National Survey of
Yoga in Australia, by researchers at RMIT in 2006, involving nearly 4000 respondents which showed the following results: [ S. Penman, 2006, Sign of the Times]. Unfortunately there is not a later study of this subject but I believe the number would have increased dramatically over the last few years. 2.9% of Australians do yoga as a form of physical activity, more than, AFL (2.7%) and fishing (2.1%) But if we also include therapeutic use of exercises or for cross training for sports such as football, running etc it is more likely that almost 12% of Australians do some form of yoga. Most people have numerous reasons to take up yoga: for health, fitness, flexibility and/or muscle tone (71%) or for reducing stress or anxiety (58%). Some turn to yoga as a form of personal development (29%) or as a spiritual practice (19%). What keeps people coming back to yoga classes has also multiple reasons but are a little different: 43% continue yoga for it’s spiritual benefits, 59% for personal
75,%$/ %,%/( WHEN the Lord Jesus spoke of the destruction of the Temple, the disciples immediately thought back on all his teachings and parables about him bringing in his kingdom in its fullness, and the prophecy that Jerusalem would be destroyed. So in all of Mark Ch 13 we read of Jesus answering Peter, James, John, and Andrew about when the “end of the world will be” but we will start with vs 3-13. That actual question is not revealed in Mark until verse seven, after
development, 80% keep up yoga for health, fitness or flexibility/ muscle tone, 79% for reducing stress and anxiety. Want to find out why so many Australians see benefits in yoga? It may be time for you to try out something new and find out what the yoga hype is all about. We’re starting new beginners classes at the House On The Hill this Tuesday, August 14. This is a four-week course during which I explain to you the basic poses and you get an idea what yoga is all about. If you have been practicing before or you are interested in coming along to the faster and more challenging yoga flow class, we would love to see you at the House On The Hill on Thursday nights at 6:30pm. Please make sure you bring along a positive attitude, a mat and a towel. It is advisable not to eat two hours before practice or only have a very light meal. Places are limited due to the location and I highly recommend to contact me before joining the beginner classes either via email Jeany. Schall@goodline.com.au or phone 0427 906 067 to make sure that we have enough places available. We ask for a $40 donation for the four-week course and $12 for each advanced class. I hope to see you there to improve physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Namaste.
As we read on we note that Jesus is telling his disciples that the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple does not necessarily mean that the end is near because the gospel must first go throughout the whole world. Persecution of Christians will be such that just being a Christian would see family and friends dobbing you in for following Jesus, and Christians would stay strong for Jesus only if they have genuine love and trust in him. describing the signs of the end of the world. Jesus said that there will be false Christ’s, wars and rumors of wars, wars near and far, earthquakes and famines, “…but they do not mean that the end has come.” The gospel of Matthew Ch 24 v 3 records this same event by writing that the disciples came to Jesus and asked him in this way: “Tell us when all this will be”, they asked, “and what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and the end of the age.”

entertaining results. The Roosters brushed aside the Dragons, leaving the St George side’s finals series in serious doubt with a convincing win on Friday night. The mighty Storm bounced back to form by thrashing the Panthers on a cold night in Melbourne. The Bulldogs put a end to the Knights recent good form, while the Sea Eagles edged out the Cowboys in a thriller. Sunday arvo footy didn’t let us down once again with some thrilling results. The Bunnies just won over a very gallant Titans team, while the Sharks were too

SO, there’s a few ways to make a fool of yourself, as I have discovered over the years. The odd silly household behaviour that ended with a cranky mum and a bit of wooden spoon action around the back of the legs, plenty of antics in the classroom that ended in stern looks and D+ averages; and plenty of attempts to impress the ladies that ended in funny looks and no one to share the cab fare with. On Friday night however, I stooped to an all time low in the decent neighbour stakes when the Cats scraped home in the game of the year over the Hawks (David Parkin reckons the best game he’s ever seen, and he’s been to every Grand Final since 1937), and the excitement got the better of me. When the siren sounded and Tommohawk belted in through from 55 post height I was out of the chair and the house just wasn’t built to contain the reaction. I took off over the road where I knew there resided a nest of Hawks
supporters who were ripe for the ribbing. I lunged to the sliding door, reefed it open and was set to launch into song when I heard their desperate cries “Don’t tell us the score, we’ve got it on delay!” Well, I quickly reversed my approach and hit rewind quick smart, and sprinted back across the road pretending the whole thing had never happened. It was of course too late. The Cats were out of the bag and the keen supports of the team wearing the jumpers in the colours of runny calf product were despondent. I apologised, of course, but you know what it’s like. I basically wrecked the end of the best game of the year for them all. To add to it all, their team lost as well. I tell you, if that had happened to me I would have been in the same sort of condition that The Deputy found himself in when I told him Mr Snuffleupagus is just a figment of Big Birds imagination (or did he come out of the closet a few years ago?). Oh

Bulldogs are barking their way to the minor premiership THE Canterbury Bulldogs are certainly on track for the 2012 NRL minor premiership, after another convincing win to make it 10 in a row, which is a tremendous achievement in the NRL. Ben Barba has been in electrifying form and it now appears he is a frontrunner for the prestigious Dally M medal. The most satisfying thing for coach Des Hasler has to be the form of his forward pac,k who have been really dominating, led by the big men Sam Kaisano and Frank Pritchard. Round 22 of the NRL once again didn’t let our fans down with some very

slick and classy for the Warriors, and the Raiders simply outclassed the outof-form Broncos. This week gets even better as we have some great match-ups. Friday night will see the Sea Eagles and Rabbitohs play a thriller, while the Storm and Titans will do battle. Super Saturday will bring three great games to the table with the Eels and the Roosters going head to head, while the Cowboys will be looking to bounce back with a win over the Warriors, and the Dragons will be hoping to stop the Tigers’ finals run. Sunday arvy footy will see
the Raiders and Panthers fight it, out while the devastating Bulldogs will take on a very desperate Broncos team. Monday night footy saw the birth of a star in the name of Koroibete. The young Fijian ran home four tries in the second half to give the Wests Tigers a convincing 25 point win over the cellar dweller Eels. well, you get the picture. I am still saying sorry for that and probably won’t be able to make it up until we beat them again, I mean play them again in the finals. That was some game though. It had the works. The response from the footy community to the game goes some way of putting it into perspective. A lot of players and commentators rating the game as one of, if not the, best game they’ve seen. I’ve seen a few and it was up there. Each day over the weekend threw up a close one, with the Pies scraping home over the Saints on Saturday, and the Crows pipping the Bombers on Sunday. Matthew Primus lost his job on Monday after the efforts of the Power on Saturday. You could almost pick that one though, with the Sheedy factor looking large. The upset for me was the Eagles going down to the Dockers and looking shaky. They have the Cats this week in a real test of their mettle. In other games this week the Saints

THE Weipa Bowls Club held their annual Goodline Ladies Classic competition last weekend. With $15,000 worth of cash prizes up for grabs 56 ladies from around Queensland and Australia were keen to contest the two-day event. For the first time in three years Weipa women were able to keep the title at home, with Maine and Maggie taking out first place.
All competitors said they had a fantastic weekend and were impressed by the changes at the clubhouse. They also extended their appreciation to the greenskeepers and the staff of the Weipa Bowls Club for their contribution to the event. This weekend will see the men take to the rink as 112 competitors battle it out over two days for a slice of the $25,000 cash prizes up for grabs in the Weipa Bauxite Classic.

Coen Colts enjoy success at home THE Coen Colts had two strong wins in the second round of the Cape Cluster Competition in their home community on the weekend. The Colts looked very dangerous at times and I’m sure they’ll be a major contender in the final series. Kowanyama and Lockhart River still remain undefeated, and will take some beating to win the premiership. The next round in Kowanyama is the final round before the grand final day which will be held in Coen on September 8. I would like to congratu-

Next Sunday will be the monthly medal and barbecue. Cost is $5 and tee-off times are: 7.30am A grade, 8am B grade, 8.30am C grade. Please be at the Club 15 minutes before tee-off. Training is on Tuesday at 4pm. The PUMP competition is on Sunday, August 26 (more information next week) so get some practice in. The two juniors representing Weipa at the Peninsula 12-19 years and under golf state championships held in
Toowoomba, Steven Wust and Taylor Francisco, had a great experience. They fought through some very cold and rainy weather, gained some more experience, but unfortunately didn’t make the state qualifier. Well done for a great effort. Don’t forget to bring all your gear in your golf bags, sunscreen, hats, water bottles, tees, balls, clubs, sand buckets, pencil and your parents. – See you on the tee, Lisa Francisco

Dirt karters kick into action THE first round of the 2012 Hastings Deering NQ Dirt Kart Series kicked into life last Saturday night at the Weipa International Raceway. The night was full of action and at the completion of all the races, the results were: Rookies – 1st Tallis Mowles, 2nd Tristan Hyytinen; juniors – 1st Rachel Brooker, 2nd Jasmine Hyytinen; KT100s Mediums – 1st Ben West, 2nd Dan Metcalfe, 3rd Mark Goldstraw; KT100s Heavies – 1st Chris Pilkington, 2nd (Tied) Michael Brooker & Justin Hyytinen, 3rd Eddie Stockley. Although numbers were down for the night, the drivers again put up another display that left people speechless. We also had Jess Kielbach, who is an ex-AIDKA dirt kart champion from South Australia, along with her family from Innisfail, make the long trek up the PDR to race her 125cc bullet. It was great to see Jess rocket around our facility and give the Weipa Club and venue the big tick of approval. It’s fantastic to see people outside of Weipa start taking this club seriously. Thanks again to all those who helped out on the day and night. Driver numbers were down and
that meant volunteers were down as well so a big effort was put in by all that attended. And finally, a big mention must go to Michael Brooker for turning his new motor into a mobile poker machine with a brand new hole in his piston the size of a 20 cent piece. Enough of the past, we only look forward here in the dirt kart world... This Saturday night sees round two of the 2012 Hastings Deering NQ Dirt Kart Series hit the track at the Weipa International Raceway and we’ve got more new karts and drivers starting and even better action. Believe me, it should be an action packed night so if your sick of the Olympics and watching Australia being given a lesson by the rest of the world, pack the kids up, grab a couple of chairs and come on out for the cheapest night of entertainment in the modern era. It should be against the law to watch something this good for free! A big thanks again to Hastings Deering for their valued support. The canteen opens at 6.30pm, and the action starts at 7pm. You start dreaming now of becoming a dirt track star. Get your backside trackside. – Derek

FOR the past five weeks the Weipa Cricket Club has been playing an eight-a-side cricket series, sponsored by the Mercure Cairns Harbourside, on a Saturday afternoon. Nothing unusual about that, except that this series (which has been been labelled “The Weipa Ashes”) included a team from the Scherger Immigration Detention Centre. Weipa Town Authority chairman, Peter McCulkin said the passionate Sri Lankan players on the Scherger side were the best team right up until last week. Ironically, six of the Scherger team’s best players were granted bridging visas just days before the finals, and the replacement players were unable to continue the side’s winning form, losing their final game. “One of the Scherger team members came up to me at the last game and told me he would not be able to play in the final game as he was going to Melbourne,” Mr McCulkin said. “He thanked us for the opportunity to play in the series and blessed me. It was pretty special.” The Scherger team displayed their bowling skills, breaking the bails on several occasions. On Saturday afternoon, one of the broken bails was ceremoniously burned and the ashes were placed in a specially carved wooden urn. Fisho’s team took out this Ashes series and it is hoped that the Scherger detainees will become a regular addition to the competition.

Send your ďŹ shing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com THEY say time flies when your having fun, so I must be having a lot of fun, as this week was a blur. The weather again proved difficult, blowing a gale one minute and then calm as a millpond the next. Nathan Love was one that stuck it out in the breeze using a houseboat moored in Boyd’s Bay as a base. Once they found the bait the Mackerel weren’t far behind. Most of their ďŹ sh were caught deep jigging using the same 150gm-250gm knife jigs they use when chasing KingďŹ sh in his home town of Bateman’s Bay. They were also trolling Rapala X-Raps 30s which produced a few, but nearly all of the ďŹ sh caught trolling got taxed by the sharks. There were a few Tuna schools around but not in big numbers, however they still managed a few, including three on y. Soft plastics on the bottom produced Fingermark, Cod, Trout and some unstoppable monsters, Nuclear Chicken proving to be the best colour. Cobia were ever present, with heaps of fish under the Manta Rays and even a couple under the houseboat on the mooring. Nathan said the dedication of Steve and his team at Weipa Houseboats couldn’t be faulted with everything there for their trip.

BE CROC WISE!
Another happy bunch on one of Steve’s houseboats, Trevor, Steve, Nick and Al ďŹ shed up north in the Nomenade Creek. In a week the boys caught 75 Barra and 35-species by-catch consisting of Mangrove Jacks, Blue Salmon, and Fingermark. The Muddies weren’t real active up there but they didn’t chase them real hard. The guys came in for a quick pit stop to re-fuel and re-provision for another week
down south. The three best and most accessible shore-based spots are Evans Landing, Mission River bridge and the Andoom bridge. All are producing ďŹ sh with live baits proving to be the best bait. Rueban Sinclair caught a few bream at Red Beach but said there were heaps of Cat ďŹ sh. He also got one nice Mud Crab on his line and lost another one. Chris Allwood ďŹ shed with
Jed up the Mission River for Barra and a 50cm Jack. They also ventured up to the Wenlock for some large Saratoga and Sooties in the freshwater. Dave Donald had clients up the Hey River where he put them onto some of the biggest Blue Salmon he has ever seen, and a monstrous metre-plus Barra that cut through the 80lb leader. So ‘til next week, tight lines. – China
How to be Crocodile Wise • Be aware of crocodiles – keep your eyes open, you might not be able to see them, but they are there. • Do not feed or otherwise interfere with crocodiles, small or large. • Avoid areas where large crocodiles or their nests have been seen • Camp at least 50 metres from the waters edge • Stand at least a few metres back from the waters edge when fishing and don’t stand on logs overhanging deep pools. • Do not clean fish, prepare food or engage in other activities on the waters edge and adjacent banks. • Dispose of food scraps (including fish) away from areas where people gather. • Keep arms and legs inside boat hulls.

FOUR members of the Weipa Swimming Club recently took part in the Central Cairns Swimming Winter Sprint Meet, held in Gordonvale. Seven clubs competed in 14 events, run over one day of swimming. All girls performed very well, coming away with a total of four gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Some good personal best times were also recorded, which is a result of all the hard work the girls have been putting in at training. Katelyn McCahon experienced her first swim meet outside of Weipa, and lifted for the occasion with some very good personal best times. Katelyn took 11 seconds off her 100m individual medley time, three seconds off her 50m breaststroke and seven seconds of her 100m freestyle time. Alissa Koina came away with
