Fatal four reminder
WEIPA police are keen to remind drivers of the ‘fatal four’ (speeding, drink and drug driving, failing to wear seat belts and driving while tired) following a serious traffic accident on Kerr Point Road on Saturday evening. Police report an unlicensed local resident was the sole occupant of the vehicle when it left the road at 8pm Saturday,
August 18, damaging two vehicles parked outside the Weipa Caravan Park before coming to rest in a garden. The driver was airlifted by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Cairns Base Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Weipa Police Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins said the crash ticked all of the ‘fatal four’
boxes and the driver was lucky to be alive. “This is a very serious traffic crash that very nearly resulted in a fatality, Snr Sergeant Jenkins said. “I am informed that the driver (who was not wearing a seat belt) was ejected from the vehicle and had the vehicle rolled from its side, the driver would have most certainly been
crushed under it. Snr Sergeant Jenkins also reported that Police were waiting for the results of blood tests to see if alcohol or drugs may have been a contributing factor to the cause of the crash. “I have have been informed that alcohol will most likely be a cause, he said. “I don’t know what more we can do to prevent his type of oc-
currence. Weipa Police already commence a very high and unacceptable level of prosecutions for drink driving offices. Snr Sergeant Jenkins said Weipa Police would continue to target drink drivers but encouraged anyone to call them and pass on any information relating to a driver suspected of drink driving. “We’ll do the rest, he said.

o Cyclone DO you remember that film Finding Nemo? It was all about a northern boy (a clown fish, as it happens) who was so desperate to get dental care that he rode the ocean currents all the way down to Sydney. Turns out everyone down there has access to a dentist just around the corner. Not like us. We have to trek for days before we can find some-one to fix a cracked tooth. Anyway, that’s all beside the point. What I meant to get on to was this - Nemo and his mates have seen the light and are deciding to move south. Life is just so much easier down there. Sure the reef is lovely when the sun shines. It’s pristine (whatever that means - you don’t think all those fish get out of the pool to use the toilet, do you?). If you can stay away from the crazy fishermen, it’s not a bad life but... You know, the bright city lights down south, all those fancy restaurants, proper shops, mobile phones that work all the time, that’s life in the fast lane! Hard to resist, and so our reef fish have begun a trek south. Some of them have even settled around Tasmania. I hope they took their raincoats and woollies because the weather can be miserable down there. The folks in white lab coats who know all about these things say tropical fish are turning up in all sorts of places they never lived before. Before long, there will be whole neighbourhoods of northern blow-ins (or swim-ins, I suppose). I know you can’t blame people for wanting to better themselves, but I think it’s sad. What sort of place and what sort of reef are we going to be left with, when all our brightest and best have gone south? We’ll just be left with the folk who are too old, too crazy or too dumb to make it in the real world. Oh well, I should fit right in, I suppose.

AUSTRALIAN scientists have proposed covering endangered coral reefs with shade cloth as part of “last resort measures to protect parts of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, telegraph. co.uk reports. The proposal, in a paper published this month, also includes using low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate coral growth and defend against the worsening impact of heat stress. The paper, in the journal Nature Climate Change, says the pace of global warming is unparalleled in 300 million years and has led to temperature rises of at least two degrees Celsius and a 60 per cent increase in surface ocean acidity over the past three centuries. Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, of Queensland University, Australia, writing with Greg Rau from the University of California and Elizabeth McLeod from The Nature Conservancy, calls for “unconventional, non-passive methods to conserve marine ecosystems. “A much-broader approach to marine management and mitigation options, including shade cloth, electrical current and genetic engineering must be seriously considered, the paper says. “The magnitude and rapidity of these changes is likely to surpass the ability of numerous marine species to adapt and survive. The paper proposes a range of possible future options for ocean management, including selective breeding and adding base minerals and silicates to the water to neutralise acidity. The Barrier Reef, which includes about 900 coral formations stretching along 2500km, attracts around two million visitors each year. The shade cloths proposed in the report would be anchored with ropes and float on the water surface to protect the corals from sunlight. In an experiment performed in Queensland several years ago, researchers deployed 5m by 5m sheets of plastic mesh, similar to those used by gardeners to protect vegetable patches. Professor Hoegh-Guldberg told the Daily Telegraph the technique was useful for protecting small patches of coral but would not “save the Great Barrier Reef as a whole.
“We are recommending looking at these technologies because at the current rate of warming we may need to use them in 20 or 30 years time, he said. “We should test them now and see which ones work. Shading is not a strategy that can be used across hundreds of kilometres of the reef. But it might - at a local level – be able to influence how many corals die. A separate report by Australian scientists found climate change is having a dramatic impact on the country’s marine life and causing tropical fish to turn up in the chilly southern waters around Tasmania. The report says south-east Australia has become “a global warming hot spot and damage to coral reefs is becoming more severe. It says climate change has caused worsening ocean acidification and coral bleaching as well as a southward migration of seaweeds, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. “There is now striking evidence of extensive southward movements of tropical species in south-east Australia, declines in abundance of many temperate species, and the first signs of the effect of ocean acidification on marine species with shells, says the report, by 80 scientists and led by the national science body, CSIRO. The report found sea surface temperatures had increased by one degree centigrade over the last century and that the east coast of Tasmania and parts of Western Australia had the highest increases. “The rate of temperature rise in Australian waters has accelerated since the mid-twentieth century; from 0.08 degrees/ decade in 1910-2011 to 0.11 degrees/ decade from 1950-2011, the report says. “Sea levels are rising around Australia, with fastest rates currently in northern Australia. Professor David Booth, a marine ecologist at the University of Technology Sydney, said tropical fish have been shifting towards Tasmania for 30 or 40 years but the flow has increased in the past 10 years. “In this case the rapidity of the change is probably fairly unprecedented, he told ABC Radio.

SEA Swift has once again been named Far North Queensland’s Employer of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards held in Cairns earlier this month. The shipping company, whose headquarters are in Cairns but with depots on Thursday Island and Horn Island, and in Weipa, Seisia, and Gladstone, retains the award it also won last year. Sea Swift chief executive officer Fred White said that as one of the largest employers in the region (approximately 300 staff), the company makes a significant contribution to the employment and skill development of local communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. “We’re absolutely delighted to have won this award once again, and it is a tribute to each and every one of our wonderful staff, Mr White said. “It’s a great achievement, and great acknowledgement for all the hard work put in by our people.

Mr White said. “The company has a strong training ethos and continually invests into its staff at all levels across its divisions. “This is illustrated by our commitment to all forms of training by a company of our size. “The vast majority of our commitment is not Government-funded, and is expended on more specialised and jobspecific training, from entry level core skills through to acquiring Masters tickets to sail the fleet. Mr White said an example of Sea Swift’s commitment to its staff is through its innovative cadetship program, with the cadet intake doubling this year

Mission River bridge maintenance
IN the coming weeks minor maintenance works will commence on the Mission River bridge, and will continue until December 2012. These essential works are a part of a five year bridge maintenance programme, which will ensure the longevity of the Mission River bridge is sustained. The scheduled maintenance will not cause any major road closures, but will mean the bridge will be closed at least once a week. Each closure will
last for 20 to 40 minutes, to allow the dive barge to conduct fuel and sewage pump works. Confirmation regarding the timing of these bridge closures will be available on the freecall hotline 1800 820 711. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. During the upcoming months, please ensure your safety by keeping clear from fenced areas and other construction material set up around the bridge.
Boat users are to keep clear of the barge or other work boats at all times. There will also be signs either side of the bridge showing the time and date, and notices displayed around the Weipa and Mapoon area. Community members that wish to receive instant updates can register to be placed on our email or SMS list. The painting, “Uncle Seaman Dan”, by Cairns artist Gen Anderson, is a gift to the Port Kennedy Association on Thursday Island. PKA president Romina Fujii said the HACC Centre was filled with clients, tourists, family and friends at the launch of the artwork on Thursday, August 9. “The PKA is honoured to receive this portrait,” Mrs Fujii said. “It was good for all of us to get together and celebrate the contribution of elders. “We all benefit from the fruits of their labour.” Mayor Pedro Stephen spoke at the launch, with a lunch provided by HACC, the PKA, and the Flexi-Respite Service which operates from the PKA Hall on Thursday Island. a great pleasure to have Seaman Dan sit for her for his portrait. “I am a great admirer of his music and felt very fortunate to have a couple of private performances during our time together,” Ms Anderson said. “It was also with much pleasure and interest that I heard his tales of how some of his compositions had come to life. “I also greatly enjoyed his stories about his life on the high

Consideration would be given to find an appropriate permanent home for the painting, where it would be available for public viewing, she said. Seaman Dan’s latest album, Sunnyside, is due for release on September 7.

ARTIST Gay Hutton is returning to Weipa to exhibit a collection of recent works in watercolour, oil and acrylic, reflecting the unique beauty of Cape York. Gay lived in Weipa from 1991 to 1997 and fell in love with the diversity of the landscape, flora and fauna of the Cape. During these years she
held bi-annual exhibitions in Weipa which were very successful with the local audience. Gay also ran art classes in pastel oil and watercolour techniques. Currently residing at her Mount Molloy studio for six months, she has produced most of these works, which subjects cover waterbirds, seascapes, plants, frogs and aerial land-
scapes executed in realistic style. Gay is returning to Weipa on Wednesday, August 29 for the opening of her exhibition entitled “Cape York Wilderness” to be held at Weipa Furniture & Electrical. Everyone is invited to view the paintings and meet the artist between 2 and 5pm on the day.
All paintings will be for sale and purchases may be collected on Wednesday, August 29, after 5pm. Unsold works will remain on display permanently, with new works arriving bi-annually. Gay is also available to accept commissions. Enquiries can be made to 4069 9499.
New executive director appointed to Catholic Education BR Paul Hough (pictured left) will step up from deputy executive director to executive director of Catholic Education Services after August 17. The move follows Dr Bill Sultmann’s return to Brisbane to be closer to family and again take up his work with the Christian Brothers and their apostolic activities across and beyond Australia. Br Paul acted in the executive director role in July and August last year when Dr Sultmann was on leave and the appointment would make for an easy, almost seamless transition in leadership, Bishop of Cairns, James Foley said. Bishop Foley thanked Dr Sultmann for his fine leadership of CES for the past five years and thanked Marist Provincial, Br Jeffrey Crowe and his Council for

generously agreeing to make Br Paul’s services available to the Diocese of Cairns until the end of 2014. Br Paul has always had a great interest in fostering educational opportunities for indigenous students. In 2007 he was awarded Member (AM) of the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to education, notably as headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Sydney, and to indigenous youth education, pastoral care and cross-cultural initiatives. He is currently involved with the development of a flexible Learning centre in Cairns to embrace disengaged students, a boarding facility in Cooktown and the possible establishment of a primary school in Weipa.
Youth boot camp locations announced

MEMBER for Cook, David Kempton, has welcomed the announcement of Cairns and the Gold Coast as locations for the State Government’s youth boot camp trial. The State Government has announced a $2 million twoyear trial for a sentenced youth boot camp in Cairns and an early intervention camp on the Gold Coast. Mr Kempton said: “The boot camps will be a real alternative for the over-represented young people in my electorate entering BE NEED TO D DON’T IN BL E the prison system. I would like to see this as a first step in a process that will lead to communities taking a greater role in dealing with the issues of juvenile crime.” The programs will give 80 young people an opportunity for rehabilitation and are aimed at deterring them from pursuing a life in crime. “We will be trialling a sentenced youth boot camp in Cairns and an early intervention youth boot camp on the Gold Coast,” Mr Kempton said. “The sentenced youth boot camp in Cairns is not compulsory, but will be offered to young offenders facing a custodial sentence. “It will provide discipline,
structure and physical training and a community- focused component on family, education and social issues. “The kids will have chosen to do the program rather than go down the detention path, but it will not be the easy option. Mr Kempton said the selection of the locations and models was based on a consultation process, which attracted valuable input from community groups. “We will regularly monitor the programs and should they be successful, we will look to roll the program out in other locations,” he said. “Now the locations have been decided, we are inviting
organisations to apply through a formal tender process to operate a boot camp. “Information sessions will be held over the next month with applications closing on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. “Choosing service providers is part of our Six Month Action plan and is an important step in making sure we can respond to the range of offences being committed by young people in Queensland.” Further information on the tender process, information sessions and funding applications is available at www.justice.qld. gov.au/youth justice

From the Chairman Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman
Marine Logistics
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce in early 2011 released a strategic plan for further development of sport fishing tourism on Western Cape York. It goes without saying that Weipa still rates as one of Australia’s premier sport fishing destinations; currently with 57 world and Australian game and sportfishing records held in waters from around Weipa. The Minister for Fisheries John McVeigh and a handful of his most senior staff are meeting with the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) next Tuesday here in Weipa. The WTA Members will be quite frank with the Minister in letting him know that Weipa and other communities along the coast from Kowanyama to the NPA have been let down badly by the previous government through a thorough mismanagement of the Gulf’s most insidious form of fishing; deep water fish trawling. Since 1998 under a joint management arrangement two large fish trawlers have operated under a Developmental Fishery Permit which allows them to target large aggregations of Red Emperor, several species of Nannygai and Mangrove Jack in the Gulf of Carpentaria The trawlers have fished largely unmonitored since October 2009 when the last Fisheries observer reported from on-board. There has not been an inspection of either vessel by Fisheries officers in the past three years, meaning that all data collected is by log book with no validation by any Fisheries officers or technicians.

When God first destroyed the world, he flooded it, and he built only one Ark for people to accept as the means of safety, and the Ark of the Old Testament is a “type” for Jesus Christ, God’s Ark of safety from his coming anger and judgement today. Genesis Ch 6 vs 6-8 says, “When the Lord saw how wicked everyone on earth was and how evil their thoughts were all the time, he was sorry that he had ever made them and put them on the earth. He was so filled with regret that he said, ‘ I will wipe out these people I have created, and also the animals and the birds, because I am sorry that
This is now an honesty system that also allows over 250 tonnes of by-catch annually (mainly Trevally species) and interaction with protected species such as marine turtles. All dumped at sea. This by catch is 39 per cent by weight of their total catch. The catch data in a recent Queensland Fisheries Report on the fishery is alarming. In the waters south of Weipa in 2009 Mangrove Jack amounted to 32 per cent of the total trawl take; in 2010 the take had dropped to 3 per cent. Is it any wonder that the stock declined so rapidly given these would have been large aggregations of spawning fish? Juvenile Mangrove Jack migrates into the estuaries along the Western Cape to become one of our most sought-after sport fish. But there is more. There is no research being conducted on the biology of the target species with all species ‘stock status’ unknown. But what is known is that most of the target species are long-lived and slow-growing, reaching maturity of 300mm after eight years and living past 32 years. The trawlers are targeting very slow growing fish, which is very reminiscent of the southern ocean Orange Roughy fishery collapse in the late eighties and early nineties. There is even more damning evidence of mismanagement that will be brought to the attention of the Minister. In support of the WTA and the Chamber of Commerce on this issue please feel free to provide feedback for our meeting next Tuesday.
By Rev. Michael Connolly
I made any of them. But the Lord was pleased with Noah’. Then Ch 7 v 1; “Go into the boat with your whole family; I have found that you are the only one in all the world who does what is right.” Noah did right in God’s sight. What does God consider the right thing to do today to get his approval and escape his wrath today? How can we be saved? It’s quite simple, really! God asks us to accept his Son Jesus Christ into our lives, and get to have a good relationship with him every day, and we will be saved. We need to find out just what it is that God has done for us through
his Son Jesus Christ. Think carefully about it. Decide if you would genuinely like to accept God’s offer of salvation. Pray something like the following: Father God, I come to you admitting that I have gone my own way in life, and rebelled against you. I want to turn to you for forgiveness of my sins. Lord Jesus, I believe that you died for me and rose again and now sits on the Father’s right hand in heaven. I now accept you into my life to be my Lord and Saviour. Please give me the Holy Spirit to help me grow as a Christian. Thank you. Amen. The Lord God is gracious. Rev Michael Connolly.

Good Life with Jeany Schall
Cardio blast for fitness and well being CARDIO or cardiovascular activities are exercises that make you huff and puff. They help to increase the blood vessel production in your lungs and muscles to make you fitter and allow more nutrients and oxygen to feed every cell of your body and increase your looks, fitness and wellbeing. A healthy glow of your skin, a well toned and shaped body and a clear thinking mind are the results of regular cardiovascular exercises. Depending on your fitness and age cardio may look different for you. When you start getting into it you may start with a walk. Take at least 20 to 30 minutes a day. As your fitness increases you may want to add 100 metre jogs in-between your 3-4 km walks. As you progress the options to make it harder and effective are endless. Here is a cardio workout that you might find challenging, which will help you to get even stronger, fitter and healthier. You may want to just add a couple of minutes and a couple of exercises every day to keep it interesting and fun, or just go half an hour full-out. Take at least 30 seconds to rest or just enough time to catch your breath in between the single exercises. This program is designed for the full body. • 200m jog combined with 100m sprint and a walk: you can do this as a shuttle run on
the oval or in the park. Jog 200m one way, then run back half way. Walk 100m back to your first destination and jog back to where you started. Repeat three to five times. • 10-20 push-ups: on either knees or feet. After the first set rest for 30 seconds and repeat three to five times. • Star jumps - 100 repetitions: stay soft in the knees and get them to track over your second and third toe. Step out and in. If you have trouble with your knees, still lift your arms over head (this will increase your heart rate and pump more blood through your body). • Sumo squat: lifting one leg off the floor kick it away. You may have seen it with sumo fighters. Not that they look like they are doing a lot of cardio but I bet you, it will leave you puffed. Bring feet one leg-width apart, stepping right, left and then kick away
and high with your right leg. Step left, right and kick away with your left leg. Repeat 10 times each side. • Shadow boxing: for one minute. • Burpee: from a standing position place both hands on the floor in front of your feet. Hop both feet back so that you are in a push-up position. Immediately hop your feet back in to where they started and stand up – repeat. • Mountain climbers: place hands on floor, slightly wider than shoulder width. Position one leg forward, bent under body, and extend other leg back. While holding upper body in place, alternate leg positions. It’s a killer but the intensity can be increased by stepping faster. Jog one kilometre or cycle for five minutes to release muscles and stretch your well-oxygenated muscles afterwards!
SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... IT’S been a while since I put pen in paw so I thought I’d let you know what I have been up to. Our family went on a camping trip to Janie Creek a month or so ago and we had such a good time. My K9 mum (Crispy) and I got to ride on the back of her dad’s ute for the trip up and back which was a new experience for me. We were able to see so much from our spot on the tray and when we got tired of watching the scenery fly by there was this lovely soft thing the humans called a swag to have a snooze on. Now that’s the way to travel! The humans did plenty of that thing they call fishing but Crispy and I were tied up under the ute while they did it. I still don’t understand why they get so upset when a) we eat their “bait” and b) we venture into the water. Still, we had plenty of fun and my mum took both Crispy and I for long walks on the beach so I reckon this camping gig is a pretty good deal. I had a trip to something called “the vet” a couple of weeks ago. The day started off badly as my humans wouldn’t give me my breakfast when we got back from our morning walk no matter how cute I tried to look. They just kept saying, “No brekkie for you, you’re going to the vet”. I had no idea what that meant, but I sure was hungry! Next thing I know I’m packed off in the car and taken to a little building which I was told was “the vet surgery”. Excellent, I thought, where’s breakfast? A very nice lady gave me a little prick with something sharp and I was taken into another room after saying goodbye to my mum and dad. I can’t really tell you much more about what happened after that as I seem to have dozed off...probably due to hunger as there was still no breakfast forthcoming, I woke in the afternoon and my mum and dad arrived to pick me up. Apparently I had been “desexed” while I was asleep. Not sure what that means but I am certain it has nothing to do with breakfast! Funny, I still felt a little dozey (probably still due to lack of food) but after a quick nap I heard the unmistakeable rattle of my bowl and food had finally arrived. A strange day to say the least, but I suffered no side-effects from my experience and breakfast has been served every morning since. I received an email from a couple of K9s (Katrina and Dino) who live in a place called Tasmania. A friend of their mum’s, Chris, visited them recently and mentioned it had been a chilly winter in Weipa. When Katrina and Dino heard what the temperature had been in Weipa they thought it must have been a heat wave! Apparently they have ice on the ground and sent me a photo (above) showing how they keep warm in winter.

They will eat up your wasps, flies, bees, flying ants, beetles, dragonflies—whatever they can catch. They’re fun to watch and,
best of all, their pest control service is absolutely free, Ms Bradshaw said. “Now that it’s August, Grey Fantails are going to be changing pace just enough to find a mate. They will build a curiously shaped nest that looks a bit like a wine glass without the base, and raise two to four chicks. So look out for fantail nests and chicks around your area soon. “Grey Fantails are quite inquisitive birds and very fearless. If you try to mimic their calls by going ‘chip, chip, chip, chip, chip, chip’ you may find a Grey Fantail gets very curious and comes closer to investigate. “They are also apparently attracted by kissing sounds or humming, Ms Bradshaw said. “You may see a lot of bigger birds such as honeyeaters and magpies around your place, but not as many smaller birds. Larger, more aggressive birds may try to drive other birds out of their territories. “While this is normal behaviour, suburban gardens with their lawns and open spaces give these
bigger birds an unfair advantage, Ms Bradshaw said. “Smaller birds need dense shrubs and understories in which to hide from predators and aggressive birds. In fact, there are a few simple things you can do to make your backyard friendlier for small birds like the Grey Fantail, said Ms Bradshaw. “Enjoy birds around Western Cape. They are very entertaining and play an important role in keeping the local environment in balance, Ms Bradshaw said. “If you see a Grey Fantail in your backyard this month, you may be in for a real treat—you’ll get your very own violin concert! Sort of. “The song of the Grey Fantail sounds a bit like a violin. It is quite high-pitched and melodious as the song soars upwards. It is usually sung from a perch during the breeding season from August to January, so listen out for it now, said Ms Bradshaw. *Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.

• Include plants of a variety of different heights and densities in your garden, including an understory and some spikey bushes for small birds to hide in. Ask at the nursery for local native plants. • When planning your garden, think about plants that can provide birds with shelter and somewhere nest—and not just about plants that provide food for birds. • Place a small bird bath next to a dense bush. This will provide shelter for the bird from the wind and also from predators. Keep the bird bath clean and with a decent level of water, or your Grey Fantail may come and chirp at you until you refill it. • Avoid using chemicals, pesticides or bug zappers in your garden as insects are the only source of food for Grey Fantails. • Look out for a Grey Fantail shadowing you! They may follow you as you walk around the garden or mow the lawn, looking for insects you have disturbed. • Keep your cat indoors, or install a cat run so your moggie can go outside without attacking any native birds.

MUDDY RIVER
Be careful not to say the wrong thing. A comment that you make in jest may be misinterpreted. Be aware of your gestures. Romance. You may be feeling a little fragile. Your partner will have to be slightly more sympathetic than usual. Realize your current state and don’t put too much emphasis on your partner.
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A long conversation with a friend will raise more questions than it solves. Try to get to grips with the original problem before you tackle the next one. Romance. Try not to hide your feelings. Your partner could do with some more reassurance. Freeing your thoughts will be emotionally lifting for you.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You’ll feel that you are being bossed about at the moment. Unfortunately, this is not the best time to make a fuss. Wait until later in the week. Romance. Your partner will have to give you a lot of extra room. Otherwise, you could be a little tetchy at times. Regard this as normal and don’t dwell on it.

You will find it a little difficult to relax with your partner this week. It is important that they are sensitive to your needs.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Don’t allow your emotions to take the better of you. An impulsive move may create problems later. It’s best to completely avoid this. Romance. Weipa squash revelations WEIPA Squash Club is well underway now having held their second week of fixtures for season two, 2012. We are finding that some of the gradings may be a little mismatched, but hopefully these will be ironed out in the next couple of weeks. In A grade, Team Hans Solo beat Team Darth Vader in what looks like would have been edge-of-your-seat games which I would love to have witnessed but work did not permit. A1 Grant Foster won in three games to Dave Edward (3-0), however the next two matches between A2’s Nick Brookes and Rod Bielby and A3’s Glen Egan and Jay Dumbleton both resulted in (3-2) wins by Hans Solo. Both matches involved two 10-point games, then A4 Wendy Long took the match in four games against Jay Murray (3-1). Teams R2-D2 and Obi Wan Kanobi were relatively evenlymatched when A1 Owen Witt convincingly defeated Rod Wawrzyniak (3-0). A2 Aaron Schleich pushed Tom Murray to the limit in the first game forcing it to “longâ€?, then Tom eased back a bit in the second, but got his second wind and polished off the next three (2-3). Sherie Hinschen (as sub for A3 Dallas Goodwin) pulled off a win in four games against Steve Lugsdin despite losing the first game (3-1). Sherie Hinschen (in her own right as A4) lost to Cole Dalton (0-3). Team Luke Skywalker was narrowly defeated by Team Boba Fett when A1 Luke Dorsett (still recovering from injury) was defeated by Phillip Barbour (as sub for Shane Hearps) (0-3). A2’s Hyytinen rose to the challenge and fought back after his first game loss to Jeff Berry to win the next three (3-1). A3 Shane Spagnol lost in three to Jarrod Stockman (0-3); A4 Ben Tantau led the way in the first two games but had to prove his worth when Amanda McKenzie pushed the third game to a “longâ€? game (3-0). A5 Michael Cridland was just warming up in the third game, but Justin Hyytinen was consistent right through the three games (0-3). B grade fixture night was shortened by way of absences and lack of subs, but the games I witnessed were of a high standard and many scores did not reflect the intensity of the games. Team Leia was the overall winner against Team C-3PO when B1 Chris Bienvenu defeated Kerry Scales (3-0). B3 Nicole Dearling won her first game but lost the next three to her worthy adversary Wayne Ailey (1-3). B4 Tim Manning was almost pipped at the post by Andrew
Glen (as sub for Katie Delfs) in the first game, however resulted in winning all three (3-0). B5 Renee Williams cemented her spot by defeating Kylie McDonnell (3-0). Team Yoda was narrowly defeated by Jabba the Hut when B1 Otis Drum won the first game, but then despite his repetitive sevens, Ben Smith outplayed him with nines (1-3). B5 Cicely Baira looked like she had a good chance of winning from the outset, forcing the first game to “long, however Kristie Moran won all three (0-3). B6 Jess Hall and Brandon Waretini played a great game, with Brandon learning new tricks every week, but it was Jess who took victory (3-0). Team Ewoks finished the night one game ahead of Team Chewbacca so these teams are well represented and matched. B1 Randall O’Neill was just getting into the swing of it and
forced the third game to “long, however Steven Borg won (0-3). B2 Emma Thomas did not play her usual settled game, and seemed a little flustered in the third and fourth games when Tom Bellinger defeated her (1-3). B3 Bianca Borg took the first game with ease, but then Ben Ghee (as sub for Melissa) clawed back with sevens but not nines (3-0). B4 Luke Mann defeated Ben Ghee convincingly in their preplayed match (3-0) – interesting comparison of result. Doug Shaw (as sub for B5 Emilly Jackson) conceded only one game to Kristie McManus (possibly still a little jet-lagged from holidays?) (3-1). B6 Charissa Hill has much improved her game play and gave Yours Squashfully a run for her money and deservedly won one game (1-3). Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

Friday night footy was at its best in round 24 of the NRL , with both games having one-point winners. The Storm overcome a very much-improved Broncos by a sensational field goal to superstar Cooper Cronk. While the Bulldogs, thanks to a Krisnan Inu field goal in the last minute, survived the West Tigers’ attacking display. Super Saturday produced some very interesting results with the Raiders winning their third consecutive game against a gutsy Roosters team, while the Sharks made easy work of the Rabbitohs. On Sunday the Panthers edged out the Warriors in a thriller while the Titans were too good for the slippery
Scotty’s AFL round-up So I got married again this week. It was seven years of cheers and beers on Monday night and we celebrated in fine style with family and friends joining us for a barbecue. The Princess and The Deputy came good as the page-boy and flower girls and delivered a reenactment true to the original, and showed enough to bring a tear to my eye. Management got pretty organised and even surprised me (and perhaps herself) by fitting into her wedding dress.* The evening was a treat and enjoyed by all. It followed a weekend of dress ups with an eighties party on Friday that saw Tina Turner, Mad Max, Cindy Lauper and Warwick Capper head off into the Weipa evening and party the night away like it was 1987. Management invited her sister and family up here for a few days and
the house has been full of the sound of laughter and tears, entertaining stories and challenging smells. Friday night’s party went well and a few sore heads the next day told the tale. Thanks to G for the lend of the Swannies guernsey for the evening. The footy was pretty good also over the weekend with things kicking off on Friday night and the Cats getting the cream again over the Saints. There’s something quietly satisfying in beating the Saints after the rivalry the two sides have developed over the last 10 years. The Lenny Hayes report was thrown out (as it should have been) but it makes the Jack Ziebel report look evermore suspect. The Bombers are under the pump after a flogging at the hands of the Blues but I reckon the wheel is turning and 2013 could be the year of the Bomber. They will come good.

Manly Sea Eagles flying high THE Bulldogs have won 12 straight games but how good are the manly Sea Eagles travelling at the moment? The 2011 premiers are just warming to the task and are serious contenders with their domination over the last month. The Stewart brothers are in devastating form, while Jamie Lyon has to be the best centre in the competition, and the halves combination of Daly Cherry Evans and Kieran Foran has been in electrifying form. In the betting market the highly-fancied Sea Eagles are quickly coming into premiership favourites once again, time will tell.

Eels on the glitter strip on the Coast. The Sea Eagles were way to strong for the Knights and sent a ominous warning to the other clubs they are certainly a big chance of getting backto-back titles. The Cowboys and Dragons went to battle with the Cowboys edging closer to the top four with a very gutsy win over the fired-up Dragons. Round 25 keeps the action coming and it all starts on Friday night with a blockbuster when the Broncos taking on the high-flying Sea Eagles. The other match will see the Raiders looking to upset the Bulldogs. Super Saturday has three games with the Panthers and
Titans doing battle , the Dragons and Warriors toughing it out and looking for a win, while the Knights travel to Townsville for a big game against the mighty Cowboys. Sunday arvo footy will see the local derby of the Roosters and Tigers, while the Rabbitohs will be looking to bounce back against the Eels. Monday night will see two good teams looking to cement their finals campaign with the Sharks taking on the highlyfancied Storm. The Roos are starting to look seriously good heading towards September. We should not forget they have been around the mark for a few years now, and if they hit September in this sort of form they could make an impact in the big games. The Pies will recover from that and be better for the run next week. I missed the Crows game so don’t know what happened there. The Crows were no good last year and they have made a big jump this year so far. I think it will be hard for them to sustain this into the finals, and maybe a few teams will be shown up when the going gets tough. The Blues could be getting players back at the right time of the year and could be another one to watch if they get their game going. This week we find out who will finish on top and I reckon the Hawks are a shoe-in. The Swans will find it tough, and the Hawks will leave nothing behind.
The Eagles take on the Pies on Saturday night in another ripper. It has become the battle for fourth and will have big ramifications for the final make-up of the eight. I love this time of the year as these games take on more significance than they would earlier in the year. I’ll go for the Eagles, Hawks, Cats, Tigers, Saints, Power, Blues, Roos and Crows. There is talk around town of a game of footy with a scratchmatch to be arranged at sometime in the near future. I’ll keep you up to speed as it happens. All for now, see you next week. Junior golfers enjoy beautiful weather Tillett appointed to
ARL Indigenous Council By Alf Wilson
Carpentaria Golf Club junior golfers enjoyed teeing-off in the beautiful Weipa weather last weekend.
WEIPA produced another beautiful morning for our enthusiastic Carpentaria Golf club juniors. Results from last week’s competition: A grade: winner - Reece Singleton, runner-up - Aaron Singleton. B grade: winner - Ashley Fleming, runnerup - Ned Brown. C6 grade: winner - Ebony Potter; C3 grade: winner - Joshua Murry, runner-up

The Pump competition will be on this Sunday for 12 years and older golfers, to go into the draw for the Tweed Heads PGA event. This is a fantastic draw to be selected

Please bring a plate of food to share, Tee-off for the Pump is at 7.30am so be at the Club by 7.15am to be ready. Don’t forget your water bottles, hats, sunscreen, and parents see you on the tee.

STEPHEN Tillett, who was raised in Weipa, has been appointed onto the Australian Rugby League’s new 2012 Indigenous Council. The Council was unveiled at the launch of the 2013 Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars in Brisbane on August 16 and includes the inaugural Learn Earn Legend! Indigenous All Stars captain Preston Campbell. The new council is: Mr Percy Knight (chair), Mr Preston Campbell, The Hon Linda Burney MP (NSW), Mr Glenn Brennan, Ms Katrina Fanning, Mr Darren Godwill, Mr William ‘Smiley’ Johnstone and Stephen Tillett. In announcing the Council, the Commission paid tribute to the inaugural ARL Indigenous Council Chaired by Mr William ‘Smiley’ Johnstone and established in 2008. Mr Tillett will be a member of the Indigenous police team to compete at the coming Murri knock-out carnival which will include numerous players of Cape York and TSI descent. Mr Tillett was born on Palm Island and grew up in communities such as Weipa, Bamaga and Thursday Island and currently works as the Cross Cultural Liaison Officer for the Queensland Police Service. He has also been a player and committee member of the FNQ Marlins Police Rugby League Club and a member of the AFL Cape York Board of which he is currently deputy chairperson. Mr Tillett was one of the prime movers behind the highly successful ‘Weed It Out’ project which has greatly reduced the use of Cannabis in the Torres Strait and Cape York which went from 2007 until June 2012. The Western Cape Bulletin saw Mr Tillett at the 26th 2011 Island of Origin Series on Badu Island where he was amongst officers who manned the ‘Weed It Out’ stall. Weed It Out was heavily promoted during the recent 26th Sea Swift Island of Origin rugby league series on Badu Island over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The program was credited with having a significant outcome which would have a positive effect on the lives of many in these communities. Sgt Stephen Tillett, the Cross Cultural Liaison Officer for the Far Northern Police Region, told the Western Cape Bulletin
Sgt Stephen Tillett, left, and Acting Snr Sgt Scott Pottle at the Weed It Out stall.
at the time: “The region-wide project began engagement and consultations with communities in 2007, with the Shared Responsibility Agreement to perform consultations and conduct the project in both Cape York and Torres Strait communities negotiated between the Queensland Police Service and Regional Organisation of Cape York Councils (ROCCY) and Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC),” he said. In terms of reducing cannabis availability, ‘Weed It Out’ has resulted in seizures totalling 45 kilograms (Cannabis) destined for Cape York and Torres Straits communities. This translates to prevention of a potential financial detriment to Indigenous communities of $2 million - $3 million. Since the project began, there have been no reported cases of Amphetamine substances being supplied to Cape York and Torres Strait communities. This reduced availability of cannabis will directly improve health and lifestyle outcomes for people in these communities. The project has also had an impact on people’s attitudes toward crime in these communities. Crime prevention strategies have been implemented in these communities, with a focus on promotion of Crimestoppers and general reporting of drug related crime.

Send your fishing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com and Queenfish. He is already planning his next trip. Closer to home there have been some very good captures coming from the Hey, with Barra, Jacks and Fingermark falling to live baits. Over in Grandmas the Bream have been going off, with a few crabs thrown in for good measure. The Mission River has been giving up a few fish as well for the boaties with the drains and creeks up past the Y on the runout proving to be the better tide. The action has been fast and furious for the land-based anglers with Evans Landing being the pick. There have been some good Barra, Jewfish, Trevally and Queenfish on offer, but the competition to catch a bigun is fierce - it’s like winning the lottery. The Mission River bridge has been giving up small Black Jewfish, Bream and the odd Barra on baits with live bait the best. Wayne and Tracey fishing off the shore with live bait have been getting Salmon, Jacks and Barra when the sharks leave them alone. Fathers Day is nearly upon us and we will have some Fathers Day specials like Tackleworld shirts Barra or Marlin prints for $49.95 each or two for $80. Until next week, tight lines.

THIS week there have been some mixed reports come in to the shop, but the best report would have to be the 17 sailfish tagged by three boats fishing very wide which will get the members of the newly formed Weipa Billfish Club Inc’s blood racing. Mackerel have been a bit scarce off Weipa but earlier in the week Kerrs reef off Mapoon fired up with Mackerel and Tuna. One customer came back down to buy a new reel as the one he had just couldn’t keep up with the hard hitting speedsters. There were also some good bottom species caught there as well, so there was something for everyone. Out around the leads there has been Trevally the odd Cobia and Queenfish being caught but stay away from the dredge as the water is to dirty to fish anyway. The wind has played havoc again this week so very few braved the offshore conditions and ended up fishing in the rivers. Down south around Aurukun there have been a few fish on the chew in the Archer River with Loren catching her first Barra at a respectable 90cm, and two others coming into the boat around the magic metre mark. Wayne Barnes also fished down that way with his family and his son in-law Seil Song travelled all the way from London and caught his first Barra along with Trevally
