IT was a weekend of high-bucking action and live entertainment when the Weipa Rodeo Association’s Rodeo Cabaret and Bullride came to town. The weekend kicked off with the Weipa Bowls Club-sponsored Rodeo Cabaret which was held this year at the rodeo grounds at the Andoom Oval. Over 500 people came to enjoy a bit of country atmosphere and live entertainment provided by Australia’s Got Talent grand finalists, the Wolfe Brothers at Friday night’s Rodeo Cabaret. Tom Wolfe said he and the band had thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Weipa and looked forward to returning to the town in the future. “Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly,” he said on Saturday night. “It’s a big change coming from Tasmania to Weipa but we are so glad we were given the chance to come here.” There was a record number of nominations for Saturday’s Goodline Bullride with 96 riders bucking out

e

of the chutes to compete for nearly $4000 in prizemoney in 165 events on 138 head of stock. Events ranged from poddy calf rides for the young cowpokes, through to the highly-contested open bullride, along with novelty events and calf scruffing to keep the over 2000-strong crowd entertained. Weipa Rodeo Association’s Steve Fairbrother said the annual event went off without any hiccups and was again a huge success. “The weekend is designed to be family oriented and judging by the number of children present there were plenty of families enjoying the cabaret and bullriding action,” Steve said. “The event would not have been such a success without the help from our sponsors, stock providers and committee members and volunteers. “We would also like to extend our thanks to the Fishing Classic for their assistance and loan of equipment.” UU Rodeo Cabaret and presentation photos can be found on page 10

Leave croc catching to the experts

The set line was attached to the crocodile warning sign on the bank of Trunding Creek.

A large piece of meat was attached to the end of the line.

Senior Constable Liam Duffy and Constable Adam McLoughlin inspect the fishing rig pulled from the mouth of Trunding Creek.

WHAT appeared to be a line set to catch a crocodile was reported to Weipa Police on Saturday morning. A member of the public came across the line, which was set in Trunding Creek, and tied off to the crocodile warning sign on the bank. The line was baited with a large chunk of meat which was out of the water, as the tide had fallen, when spotted by the member of the public. “There was a big brindle dog chewing on the meat and it started barking at me, which alerted me to the line, he said. Weipa Police Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins said it was obvious the line was set in an attempt to capture the saltwater crocodile seen recently in the area. “It is an offence to target or capture saltwater crocodiles, they are protected under Queensland laws and hefty fines apply. “Whilst we appreciate the genuine and very real concerns raised by residents with recent sightings, all sightings are investigated and a proper trap is deployed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers, Snr Sergeant Jenkins said. “I encourage residents to report sightings to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Weipa and not attempt to capture them as they will be prosecuted. “Leave the job of investigating crocodile sightings or capture to the experts, our local Rangers are extremely competent to safely handle our local crocodile problems. “Obviously individuals need to be croc wise in croc country, Snr Sergeant Jenkins said. “Always assume a saltwater crocodile is, or could be, in every creek in the Cape and give them (saltwater crocodiles) the respect they deserve. The owner of this fishing rig has seven days to come and collect it from the Weipa Police station otherwise it will be disposed of.

FINALISTS have been announced in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music, Sport, Entertainment and Community Awards, aka the Deadlys, and Napranum Parents and Learning Group (PAL) is a finalist in the Outstanding Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education category. The Napranum Parents and Learning (PAL) Group has been operating since 2004 and helps parents prepare their children for school. It supports and empowers parents and family members to engage in their children’s learning and assists the development of their children’s early literacy and numeracy skills. Community ownership was, and still is, a key element to the success of the program. When the Napranum PAL Group was created in 2004 as a not for profit company, it formalised the group of people committed to effecting

The whole fashion revolution of the sixties passed me by. It passed northern Australia by as well. Our fashion-conscious citizens have one style to cover all occasions. Locals honoured with bravery awards SIX local people have been recognised with Australian Bravery Decorations for their selfless actions to save others from injury and death. Kevin Beven was awarded both an individual Bravery Award and a Group Bravery Citation, along with five others for their part in the 2011 rescue of Todd Bairstow after he was attacked by a crocodile in Trunding Creek, Weipa. Peter Chevathen, Fredrick Clermont, Simeon Wilfred Jawai, Ms Raylene Anne Motton and Alfred Port were all cited, along with Kevin, for the Group Bravery Award. Senator Ian Macdonald, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern and Remote Australia and Defence and Defence Support said he congratulated them all. “In March last year, Mr Beven was the first person on the scene when a 300kg crocodile launched itself from a creek to attack a fisherman on the bank and pulled him into the water as he clung desperately to some mangrove roots, Senator Macdonald said. “Regardless of his own safety, Mr Beven grabbed the man, preventing his descent into the water and tried to pull him free.

The crocodile believed to be responsible for the attack on Todd Bairstow was removed by Wildlife Officers.

“He held on until the others arrived and began throwing logs, sticks and stones at the animal until its jaws loosened their deadly grasp. Mr Beven quickly pulled the victim up the bank to safety while the others stayed in the water to distract the animal until the arrival of emergency services. “Mr Beven showed great presence of mind, and great bravery – without his quick actions the victim would almost certainly have been pulled into the water to his certain death. “It is heartwarming to see, in this age of self-absorption, that there are still great Australians who put others before themselves and we are all better for it. “I join my fellow Queenslanders in giving them our

heartfelt thanks. Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, GovernorGeneral of the Commonwealth of Australia who approved the award of the Australian Bravery Decorations said: “The announcement of national bravery awards recognises the heroic actions of those amongst us who have placed the safety and lives of others before their own. “We are privileged to have such role models in our society, and it is an honour to be able to recognise their acts of selfless bravery and thank them publicly for their brave actions, Ms Bryce said. There are four levels of bravery awards to recognise the actions of individuals and a separate group award (established in 1990) to recognise

acts of bravery by a number of persons working in concert. These awards are the Cross of Valour, the Star of Courage, the Bravery Medal, the Commendation for Brave Conduct, and the Group Bravery Citation. Since 1975, including the awards announced this week, there have been five awards of the Cross of Valour; 140 awards of the Star of Courage; 1092 awards of the Bravery Medal; 1,722 Commendations for Brave Conduct and 92 awards of the Group Bravery Citation. Anyone may nominate any other person for the award of the Australian Bravery Decoration. Nominations are considered by the Australian Bravery Decorations Council.

Organisational changes for Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa LAST Thursday, August 23, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa announced a number of changes to its organisational structure to ensure its long-term future in increasingly difficult economic conditions. A recent review of service and support functions across the operations has identified the need to reduce a

number of roles in these areas. Whilst the majority of these roles are currently vacant and will not be replaced, it also means that a small number of employees will be impacted by these changes. “The impact of the current volatility in global economic conditions, meant we had to take this decision to maintain our

competitive position, and reduce costs, said Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General manager JoAnne Scarini. “We have had discussions with employees affected by the proposed changes to our organisational structure. The employees in these roles will be offered redeployment to alternative roles in the business where

these are available or redundancies, said Ms Scarini. “I acknowledge the significant impact this will have on individuals and their families. We will work through this process together to ensure that our people are well supported throughout the changes. Ms Scarini said they will continue to treat

their employees with dignity, fairness and respect and ensuring the safety of the whole workforce remains our priority. “While these are difficult times, we remain committed to the Western Cape, and working in partnership with local communities, said Ms Scarini.

Fresh food farce AFTER living in Weipa for the past 18 years I have seen some huge changes in the town. In almost every aspect things have improved with only two exceptions. One of course is the road in to Weipa. The other is Woolworths. That would be Woolworths “the fresh

food people. That may well be the case in most of their stores, but it certainly does not refer to ours here in Weipa. If you have half of one side of an aisle of fruit and veg (I did not say the word FRESH) and 20 aisles of tinned food, you do not qualify for a title anything like fresh. You are “the tinned food people. How many more years are we going to

keep on groaning about the empty shelves, the fruit and veg that does not last, and the poor selection of whatever is left? I am sure I am preaching to the converted here, but we just seem to let them get away with it, year in, year out. Decade after decade. It seems we have lost sight of the fact that we are the customers. We have the money. We are the reason they are here. It matters not who the managers are, and there have been many, nothing changes. Why do we only receive the one shipment each week? With trucks and vessels arriving into town almost daily “the tinned food people don’t seem interested in any extra workload to improve the situation. I may not be the brightest candle on the cake, but it seems to me that if I was constantly selling out on a regular basis I would up my order. The problem is I may not sell the extra every time and be left with old produce. All I can say to Woolworths about being left with crap fruit and veg is “Welcome to our world. I have been in communication with Woolworths head office advising them of the issues mentioned here. Their response was to pass on my concerns to the local manager. To the local manager, I say take note of how this town can rise up, as it has done over certain issues in the past and won. Ask the liquor outlets in town what has happened to their sales since online shopping with very low, if any, freight charges to get the product into town. It is now your call

Woolworths. We all look forward to your reply in next weeks Bully. If your reply, or the silence that follows, carries no commitments to improve this situation, there are far better and cheaper options on the horizon. Crazy Pete

4X4 crew enjoy Weipa visit By Giembra Busmer

THE crew from Pat Callinan’s 4X4 Adventures was in town last weekend filming for two upcoming episodes of the nationally broadcast 4x4 television show. The first one-hour episode in the Cape York two-part series will feature the crew’s trip from Cairns to Duyfken Point and Stones Crossing, and the second episode will feature Cape York north to the tip. The Western Cape Bulletin caught up with Pat and the crew at the Weipa Caravan Park & Camping Ground on Monday afternoon and they were full of praise for their time in Weipa. “We flew into Cairns from Sydney, picked up our two Nissan Patrols and hit the road, Pat said. “Weipa was always on the agenda as we wanted to do some fishing but we really lucked out, arriving on Saturday in time to catch the Weipa Bullride which we really enjoyed. Pat said Weipa Bullride Association’s Steve Fairbrother was more than happy to have the crew film and photograph the event and went out of his way to be of assistance. “We just kind of sprung it on him I guess, arriving with a film crew like that, but he was so helpful and hospitable. Getting

that sort of action on film was a real bonus. Pat and the crew will be spending two weeks travelling and filming on the Cape before loading their cars onto the Sea Swift barge on Thursday Island for the sea voyage back to Cairns. “I’m really looking forward to the Sea Swift trip as I’ve never done it before. I didn’t realise the voyage incorporates the mail and freight run into all sort of places I’ve never been to so it should be very interesting, Pat said. Making the television show, creating 4x4 DVDs and magazine feature stories involves around 10 “big trips annually. As well as the two well kitted out Nissan Patrols the crew of five travel with five video and still cameras and spend around 20 hours per trip filming. It then takes around 10 days of editing to make into two episodes of the Pat Callinan’s 4X4 Adventures TV show. Asked what their favourite part of the trip has been so far Pat was quick to say the Weipa Bullride. “We did visit a beautiful place called Elim Beach north of Cooktown and were taken to a lookout no camera crew has ever visited before which was pretty special,

but I reckon the Bullride takes the cake. While in town Pat and the crew dined at the Weipa Bowls Club and said the roast was “fabulous. “We noticed the Weipa Bowls Club had sponsored the Rodeo Cabaret so thought we’d do our bit to support them while in town, Pat said. They also hired a boat from the Weipa Caravan Park & Camping Ground but decided they were better four-wheel drivers than fishers as they only hooked one undersized barramundi. Leaving them to pack up for

an early morning departure the crew were happy and relaxed. “You know, I think this is one of the best caravan parks in Australia, Pat said. “Lovely grassy sites, shady trees and the big red ball dropping over the horizon every night – what more could you ask for? The Cape York episodes of Pat Callinan’s 4X4 Adventures will screen on Channel 10 in November or December this year, and again in January or February 2013 on 1HD. The adventures will also be included in a special magazine feature. For more information visit mr4x4.com.au

THE Weipa Hardware 2012 trade show, held last Saturday, was a resounding success according to the store’s owner, Annette Statton. Ms Statton said hundreds of people took the opportunity to visit Weipa Hardware on Saturday and grab a bargain, win a prize or get some advice from the 14 suppliers who came to Weipa for the trade show. “We hold the trade shows once every three years and it’s our way of showing our customers we ap-

Western Cape Apprentice and Trainee Awards

Skill360 Australia cordially extends an invitation for you to attend the:

RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa was recently recognised at the annual Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference for one of its Health and Safety Innovations. R i o Ti n t o A l c a n Weipa Health, Safety and Environment manager, Holly Wallace said Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Andoom heavy equipment (HEQ) workshop team’s ‘starter motor jig’ innovation was a worthy competitor at this year’s conference. “The starter motor jig is a purpose-built tool designed for Caterpillar 776D belly dump trucks that eliminates the manual handling risks associated with removing and replacing this particular vehicle’s starter motor, Ms Wallace said. “The innovative minds of the Andoom HEQ team have not only created a tool that eliminates safety risks, but a tool that also provides economic benefits by decreasing the turnaround time for changing out starter motors. Local Andoom HEQ diesel fitter Dennis Blanco was on hand at

the conference to present and explain the innovation, and also to accept the award on his team’s behalf. Each year the conference includes a safety innovation competition, which Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa annually enters and this year the operations and the Andoom HEQ team were recognised with a highly commended award. “This fantastic innovation has made a real difference on-site working towards a zero harm environment for our employees, and it was great to see the Andoom HEQ team receive the recognition they deserve, Ms Wallace said. The conference, which was held in Townsville, is a fantastic opportunity for mining companies to share innovation ideas and learn what new safety products are on the market. For more information about the winning innovation or our operations, contact Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community freecall hotline 1800 707 633.

Little critter identified THE little critter spotted at the Weipa Caravan Park by resident David Kay has been identified. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) identified the bug as a tiger beetle (Cicindelinae) larvae. The adult beetle is from the family Carabidae. Adults tiger beetles are active predators of other invertebrates and can be very colourful. They are fast runners and can also fly very quickly. The larvae are generally sedentary hunters. They live in burrows, often in clay banks, sometimes logs etc and block

the tunnel entrance with their plate-like head and pronotum. When a small creature walks by they lunge out and skewer prey with their large jaws. The larvae anchor themselves into their burrows by using the strange spine-like arrangement on their back and the tip of their abdomen as a type of wedge. Thanks also to Lisa Rhen who sent us an email regarding the bug. Lisa said the kids in Weipa call them “mulligrubs” and they play

HELLO to all our readers, both in and out (and hopeful proponents) of the business sector of Weipa and the Cape. This is the first of regular articles relating to the Chamber of Commerce and how it is best able to serve its members, and the community at large, in particular keeping you abreast of what’s on and coming up. Firstly, let’s look at the Chamber of Commerce, and who and what it actually is, and how it supports the Cape York region. From its onset, the Chamber’s primary function and focus has strived to encourage and support private enterprise. and to support and promote networking within local business houses. It endeavours, through a strategic advocacy role, to ensure Weipa and the Cape York area obtain suitable and appropriate levels of services and infrastructure, and to lobby for these levels of support. It also advocates and recognises the importance of Indigenous participation in the employment and business sector, which ultimately leads to economic growth and development for everyone in the region. The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce signify and represent an ever-changing and growing business population, ranging from mining, tourism, education, hospitality, retail and construction/engineering. These industries, alongside the three key Aboriginal Shires of Mapoon, Napranum and Aurukun, and the Western Cape Communities Trust, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and Weipa Town Authority complete and encapsulate the strength and embodiment of working together, and as one voice when defining the role of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce. Its elected officers are Vance Wallin - president (managing director of Carpentaria Contracting), Jay Murray - member, (prominent businesswoman and one of the organisers of the annual Weipa Fishing Classic), Michelle Elms

Chamber Chatter - secretary) (finance manager at the Western Cape College), Liz Logan treasurer (co-ordinator, Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement) and, finally, myself, Yvette Carter, am the Chamber’s administration and project officer. The Chamber has an airy office, located in Land Street, Evans Landing and has space there to rent. Call me on 0429 062 449 if you are interested in locating your business there. Through, and because of, the commitment of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce the combined goals and ambitions of businesses in and around the Cape are an ongoing reality. With the support of the current, and future, members flanked by community partners a sustainable and ever-evolving community lies ahead for us and our children living and working in the Western Cape region. Our next initiative is to host regular Chamber social gatherings with guest speakers. The first will be a twocourse dinner and drinks with guest speakers from Qantas and Rydges on Wednesday, September 19 at 6.30pm. We will be hosting this event at the Weipa Motel and Resort Function Centre. The Chamber would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Power and Mary and Stephen for their sponsorship and invaluable support in organising and preparing the event. Invitations will be sent to Chamber members soon. If you’re not a member of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce and would like to be, please contact Yvette on the abovementioned telephone number. Hoping this insight into the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce will give you the background reading for our next update with upcoming events, business information and projects on the go. Yours in business, The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce

and with a smile on their face. Give it a try if you have not yet started or have slacked off. Here are a few notes on why Group fitness classes can help improve your health and wellbeing. 1. Make it a catch up session with your friend. When we catch up most of the time we eat foods or have a drink. Coming to a walking or running class gives you an hour of uninterrupted catch up time and you are getting fit at the same time. 2. The more classes you visit the fitter you get. Coming to variety of classes will ensure that you are cross training and that all parts of your body can get toned and stronger. 3. The more classes you visit the more you

learn about your body and how to establish a safe exercise routine. Because these classes are led by a professionals we can educate you about what exercises are best for your goals and your fitness. 4. Time flies when you’re having fun. Group fitness classes are usually fast-paced which helps you to concentrate on what you are doing rather than checking your watch. What is 45 minutes of sweat when you’re having fun? 5. You may find yourself trying out something new. There are lots of different exercises and classes you can take and you may find to love a new sport, movement or exercise. You many and surprise yourself at what you are capable of.

POSITIVE Pathways to Success (PPTS) students last week celebrated the completion of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards. Melissa Buchholz, (former Western Cape College student who is now studying at James Cook Universtiy and was unable to attend due to student commitments), Anita Woodley, Miranda Savo, Rondell Mark, Brian Rattler, Theo Parry, Eddie John, Damien John and William York, from PPTS were presented with their award certificate and medallion by David Bird, Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Indigenous Business Unit (IBU), Cairns, at a PPTS family and community barbecue on Thursday, August 23. Brian Rattler, Theo Parry, Eddie John, Damien John, William York, Anita Woodley, Miranda Savo and Rondell Mark from the Positive Pathways to Success are the first indigenous students from the Western Cape Region to receive this award.

“This is not only a commendable achievement for them personally but also for their families and community, PPTS director Chris Brown said. “These students have demonstrated that they are committed to challenging themselves to succeed. “Many of the students have overcome significant personal challenges to complete this program, Chris said. “Whilst they are too modest to acknowledge the following, the students are positive role models for younger members of their community. “The skills and experiences in which they have had the opportunity to learn and participate have provided a solid foundation to successfully continue on their life journey from teenagers to young men and women. To receive the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards, the students had to complete three months fitness/physical recreation, three months skill, three months volunteering plus

an additional three months from any of the previous sections. They also participated in an adventurous journey. Because of the significant challenges of living remotely, Chris said creative solutions were developed to enable everyone to successfully achieve their goals. “Unlike students living in the south-east corner or major regional centres of the State, the opportuities to participate in aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards program are limited in their variety and accessability. “For those students on remote cattle properties the opportunity to pop over and volunteer at a charity or community-based program is not an option, she said. Students completing their award in Weipa had the opportunity to volunteer both in the Napranum community and Weipa. “Rondell, Anita and Miranda volunteered at the Napranum Community Farm thanks to

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards is greatly apprectiated, Chris said. To meet the criteria the boys had to combine their training in horsemanship to include fitness and physical recreation. Volunteering was a greater challenge and this was solved through them giving their time in a variety of situations including on-station and when they returned home to Napranum. “The boys’ horsemanship and horse care skills have been useful in the next phase of their idividual life’s journey, in moving from training to employment as ringers and jackaroos, Chris said. The tyranny of distance, time and weather, in the Cape combined to thwart attempts to complete the adventurous journey as a group, so the students resorted to small group activities to complete this criteria. “We would like to thank Margita Regazzoli from the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program for her support and

problem solving skills. Our questions, and at times frustrations, were never a bother to her and she always managed to find a path for us through the maze of regulations and protocols, Chris said. “We also thank Leon Proud, Head of Western Cape College and Garry Hutchinson, Head of Western Cape Campus for their continued support and belief in the value of the Positive Pathways to Success Program. “Finally, without David Bird’s commitment to the PPTS, the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards program would not have been possible. It was financed through the PCYC IBU Cairns. “It is through David’s unreserved commitment to, and belief in, the youth on the Western Cape, that he has once again facilitated the training undertaken and success experienced by all students, whose alternative pathways are leading them towards achieving their dreams.

CROSSWORD No. 113

SUDOKU No. 113

Your Lucky VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Be careful not to go overboard on a shopping trip. A burst of excess enthusiasm later in the week could work out to be more expensive than you can afford. Romance. A powerstruggle between you and your partner is not going to help either of you very much. A recent dispute must be settled as peacefully as possible.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A powerful aspect to Jupiter will help you to push ahead with an idea that has been brewing for weeks. Luck will be on your side this week, so everything should come together. Romance. A phone call late at night will help to get your social life back on schedule after a lull in activity. This should be an excellent period for romance.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

FOR KIDS

A story that you have been told is not quite the whole truth. You will have to look a lot deeper and ask more questions before you discover what really has been going on. Romance. A powerful aspect to Neptune will make your mind wander. Make sure that you don’t forget to carry out an important promise.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) This is not the best time to get into a confrontation with your boss. You need to play safe at least one more time and bite your tongue. You will soon have a chance to make your feelings clear. Romance. Your partner may be in need of some extra support at the moment. Be especially kind to them, especially around the middle of the week.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A let down which is entirely your fault could cause some embarrassment. An honest approach will help to restore your friends’ confidence in your abilities. Romance. An original suggestion for a get-together will be worth following up. A favourable aspect to Venus will help this outing to go well.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A friend from overseas will help you to see recent events from a completely different light. You might not agree with everything that this person says, but you should take the time to listen to them. Romance. Time spent away from home will give you a chance to relax. Take it easy for a while, and you will both be better off.

FINDWORD No. 113 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A strong surge of energy will help you to push through an important change. Don’t give up when the going gets tough! The end of the week will be the make or break point. Romance. Your ability to understand what your partner is thinking will help to bridge the gap between you.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) The people around you will be especially cooperative this week. This will be an excellent time for any kind of compromise that you need to arrange. Romance. Favourable aspects to both Venus and Mercury will help you to express your feelings a little better. You need to know what an admirer thinks of you: this is the time to find out.

MUDDY RIVER

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) A wild animal who appears to you several times this week will be a lucky omen. The last sighting will be especially significant, and will come just before an important meeting. Romance. A difficult aspect to Mars could make you a little tense. At times you may find yourself expressing your feelings slightly more forcefully than is really necessary.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Your creative juices will be running at full steam this week. A favourable aspect to Uranus will help you to come up with an original solution to a problem which has foxed all of your colleagues. Romance. A meeting with a longstanding admirer will go better than expected. You both enjoy each other’s company, but may be hesitant about getting more seriously involved.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

QUOTE OF THE DAY We cannot always build our future of our youth, but we can build our youth for the future. – Franklin Delano Roosevelt Page 14 Western Cape Bulletin August 29, 2012

SOLUTIONS No. 113

An approach which has failed repeatedly in the past is unlikely to be any more successful this time around. Leave this matter to sort itself out and put your mind to something more rewarding. Romance. A boost to your confidence will come at just the right time. A new relationship will go much better if you are less hesitant.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A powerful aspect to Mercury will help to improve your mental powers. You will be thinking much more quickly than the people around you: if anyone tries to “pull a fast one” you will catch them out! Romance. You may need to spend a little time by yourself this week. Go off on a trip by yourself!

team striving for success and finishing the season on a high note. Round 25 certainly did have its good results with the Raiders finally ending the Bulldogs winning streak. Manly were just simply too good for the out of form Broncos while the Panthers were too slick for a disappointing Titans. The Dragons thrashed the troublesome Warriors and the Cowboys were too big and too strong for the Knights. The Sydney Roosters trampled all over the toothless Tigers while the Rabbits were too good for the Eels. Scotty’s s ’ t i b AFL b Ra round-up You might be wondering who the hell does this person think they are taking over Maca’s column at this extremely crucial point in the AFL competition, but to everyone’s dismay The Deputy dragged him home early from the Rodeo (no doubt this was an excuse to watch the Eagles versus the Pies) and hasn’t been heard from since. So I’ve taken it upon myself to step up to the plate and deliver on the weekly ramble. No doubt Management will be ecstatic she can finally have a claim to the television on a Monday night. But rest assured, I’ve done my best to try and give Maca some juicy column content that aligns with the extremely high standard of quality he has continually produced so far. Oh, and talk some AFL too. So there isn’t much between the AFL tippers at the moment. Honky Nuts still had the lead last week, but Viking Wench and MightofStKilda weren’t far behind. Seriously, all I ever hear about from some of the Gradiators is “AFL this”, “AFL that” and “Yeah I’ll come and socialise

soon, I’m just checking my tips”. And of course I won’t forget the sacred Friday and Saturday nights where I possibly couldn’t even dream of suggesting something to do, and the boys are always preoccupied about whether their SportsBets are going to pay off their $12.50 Albatross schnitzels on Sunday. Even though I am not the biggest AFL fan out there (do love my Wallabies), I do get some sick enjoyment from reading Maca’s column each week and seeing the pain on the faces of my friends when they realise those two return tickets are slipping out of their grasp week by week. A dilemma has presented itself though. Do I back the Gradiators in their quest for the top of the tipping board or do I back Viking Wench who, let’s face it, scares me a little. I think for the final round where anything goes, a new leader could emerge with the right instincts, but I’ll continue playing the fence and hold off on burning my bridges. I didn’t watch any AFL this weekend as per usual, because I decided to attend the

Measuring up Cowboys riding high THE North Qld Cowboys are riding high into the finals series and with the form of Jonathon Thurston and Matt Bowen I’m very confident that this year could be the one to finally bring home the premiership. They have a formidable front row in test forwards James Tamou and Matt Scott are in great form leading the way for the classy backs led by Thurston and Bowen who’s combination is as exciting as they come. I even read an article with legendary coach Wayne Bennett quoting their combination is as good as Walters and Langer in the early nineties. With only 2 weeks to finals the intensity of footy has risen to great heights with every

finally winning in one mighty tough game. This week is the final round of NRL and we have some thrilling games in Round 26, it all starts Friday night with the Knights and Rabbitohs doing battle while the Broncos will be looking to win over the Panthers and seal a top 8 finish. Super Saturday will see the Titans play against a red hot high flying Sea Eagles team, the Tigers and Storm will do battle while the Bulldogs will look to bounce back against the Roosters. On Sunday the Warriors come up against the green machine who are just cruising along nicely , The Cowboys will look for a good win over the Sharks to try and get into

the top 4 while the Eels and Dragons will play out in the battle of Sydney. The Northern Pride played it’s last game of the season against the powerhouse Redcliffe Dolphins and had a big win. Unfortunately for our local guys they miss the finals series for the first time by one point. On a sad note the club farewelled club legends in Coach Dave Maiden who is moving on and Chey Bird and Rod Jensen who have retired and they were certainly great clubmen and will be sorely missed. Weipa Rodeo instead of sulking about the Gradiators preferring AFL to group hangs. This was my first time actually seeing local residents challenge a bloody large bull and I think the heart palpitations that ensued saw a couple of years shaved off my life. There’s a lot of guts that goes into nominating to riding that monster (yes, I decided it was too large and aggressive to define it as a normal ‘bull’ – did anyone see the size of some of those horns??), and I have a great deal of respect to those that had the courage to go through with those eight seconds. Kudos to Viking Wench’s little Cowboy who won best dressed on the weekend – definitely takes after his mum in that arena. Management actually also lost control of herself there for a few minutes when The Princess carved up the makeshift dance floor and took out the children’s dancing competition. Probably best that Dad wasn’t there to witness those moves, let’s hope he’s got a shot gun once that Sweet Sixteen birthday rolls around.

Back to the good stuff - so I did hear that it was a big weekend for AFL with some of the top contenders battling it out in the final rounds of the competition. The top two teams, Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans match came down to the wire with the Hawks soaring to a win by only eight points, which means they are now sitting at number one. The Eagles showed they are still in contention by showing Collingwood who is boss with a comfortable 49 point win. Gold Coast caused the upset of the round with its 12 point victory over Carlton. With only the final round remaining, the top has been finalised. Hawthorn can still lose the top spot as they go up against the West Coast Eagles; while the Swans take on the Cats away from home. Oh, and Maca also mentioned something about going for the Crows, Swans (bit of a betrayal on Maca’s behalf), Roos, Pies, Dockers, Faints, Tigers and Lions for the final round, and the Hawks for the big win overall. That’s all from me, Rabbits

Pride legend Bird to fly the coop NORTHERN Pride’s record points scorer Chey Bird played his farewell game at Barlow Park on Saturday, August 18 after announcing his retirement at the end of the 2012 season. The 32-year-old veteran pulled on a Pride jersey at home for the last time in the club’s Intrust Super Cup clash against Easts Tigers. Bird, who has scored 572 points in 94 appearances for the Pride, was an inaugural member of the club in 2008, and a crucial member of the 2010 grand finalwinning team. The former Townsville Brothers star will not be lost to the Pride though, continuing in his role as manager of the highly-successful Take Pride Program. “It’s been an absolutely fantastic experience to play at a higher level, and meet a whole new circle of friends, and spend time in such a beautiful part of the world, Bird said. “I feel the timing is right to call it a day, and I’m really looking forward to dedicating my whole time to the Take Pride Program, something I haven’t been able to do fully with my playing commitments. “I’d like to thank the coaches I’ve played under, especially Andrew Dunemann and Dave Maiden, and every single player I’ve played with – I couldn’t pick out any one individual, they’ve all been great. “I’d also like to thank all the Pride fans and volunteers who have been so supportive to me over the past five years. Bird said the obvious highlight of his Pride career was the 2010 premiership, the first and only time the Pride have won the Intrust Super Cup in their five years of existence. “It’s definitely top of the tree in regards to my playing career. It was just a magical experience, he said. “I’m also proud of the personal achievements, like scoring the first ever Pride try. I’m maybe

a little disappointed I didn’t get to 100 games, but to be honest, I wouldn’t change a thing. Bird said he was equally proud of what the successful Take Pride Program had achieved since it was launched in 2008. “It’s definitely been the highlight of my working life, he said. “We’ve made a lot of positive difference to a lot of children in communities around Far North Queensland, and to see the smiles on the kids’ faces makes it all worthwhile. Pride coach Dave Maiden paid tribute to Bird, who he first met in his role as assistant coach during the Pride’s inaugural season in 2008. “Chey’s just been an absolutely fantastic servant to the club, said Maiden, who will also say goodbye to Pride fans this Saturday after announcing earlier this season that 2012 would be his last in charge. “I’ve met no braver player in footy. The way he carries the ball from the back is fearless, and he has no thought of selfpreservation.

“He’s a quality person, and has been a great sounding board for me over the past few years. “He’s never given me any dramas, and represents the club in the best possible fashion. I can’t fault him. “It’s fantastic he’ll still be around the club after he retires, and I encourage everyone to get down to Barlow Park on Saturday to pay tribute to a stalwart of the club.

Golfers to play Rio Tinto Classic this weekend Send your fishing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com WITH spring just around the corner warmer water temperatures should lead to more fish starting to play the game again and better catches should be coming in. There has been a lot of interest in Sailfish since my last report and plenty of inquiries at the shop as to where they have been caught. Perseverance is the key to billfishing, as the boys were out there all morning for naught, and then they came on with a vengeance at lunch time. Tuskies, Bluebone and Stripeys are still on the southern reefs, and there is a good showing of Trout out there as well. Speaking with some of the guides, the Mackerel have been very scarce, but there has been a few Tuna about taking slugs. The water clarity is getting better inshore so the Billfish might come in a bit closer. Fishing has been going okay around the leads with Trevally, the odd Cobia and some mixed bottom fish. I went for a fish with Kevin, one of my customers, off the rocks out the front and we used live bait, dead baits and lures for a mixed bag of Cod, Barra and Barracuda. We also saw the biggest croc just drifting around off the rocks. Young Luti Toby, fishing off the shore at Napranum, has been catching Barra and Barracuda up to 60cm. Mission River bridge is still producing Salmon, Barra and Queenfish with the runout tide seemingly the best. Evans Landing has slowed a little bit but there are some large Queenfish on the prowl there at the moment. There has been a few fish in the river, as four-year old Grace Bradford (pictured top) can confirm. While fishing with her

LAST Saturday’s Carpentaria Golf Club event was a two-person ambrose sponsored by Mitre 10. The winners, with a 64 nett was Ollie and Daniel, and runners-up was Nathan and Peter on a count back from Derek and Dave. The NT’s went to Daniel and Ollie. Sunday’s event was a single stroke monthly medal and the winner, with a 69 nett was Jock Constantine from Max Kofe with a 70 nett. The NTPs went to Jo, Jock and Brett. This weekend is the Rio Tinto Classic, a 36-hole single stroke. Just a reminder the AGM is coming up at the end of September. The date is yet to be confirmed but please start thinking about going on the committee for 2013. Thank you to the sponsors and players over the weekend. Good golfing, Wendy Grainger Club Captain

Dad under the Andoom bridge, using lightly-weighted squid and prawns for bait, Grace landed some lovely Bream and even got an Estuary Cod. Chris from the shop has been getting amongst the fish nabbing Barra, Jacks and Fingermark in the Mission River.

There are some large bait balls in the Hey system but there hasn’t been many fish working them except a few small Sharks. Queenfish can be found cruising the flats following Shovel-nose Rays. Plenty of Bream can be caught amongst

the snags, with them taking baits and lures. Father’s Day is upon us and we have some extra special prices on offer so come in and put a smile on Dad’s face this Sunday. ‘Til next week, tight lines. Cheers China

The Weipa Cricket Ground played host to the Western Central Cape AFL Cup on August 17 and 18. With over 60 children participating the ground was a hive of activity, with two teams from Weipa, Aurukun and a combined team of Coen, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. After the first couple of games it was clear that the Weipa Red team and the Aurukun Red team would be vying for the title of Western Central Cape champions. The level of play was at an exceptional standard, highlighting how popular the game of AFL is rapidly becoming on the Cape. On the Saturday after the kids spent the night at the Weipa Caravan Park, the two teams played off for the title. The game was a tight affair with the kids from Aurukun showcasing their exceptional skills and brilliant speed and really taking

it up to the Weipa team. In the second half the bigger, stronger bodies of the Weipa team started to take their toll on their Aurukun counterparts. In a very close finish the Weipa Red team lead, by Iliasa Nadredre and Jayden Charger, ran out gracious winners of the 2012 Western Central Cape Cup. At the conclusion of the championship the 2012 Western Central Lions representative team was selected to take part in the 2012 Crusader Cup to be held in Weipa from September 3 to 5 at the Weipa Cricket Ground. Those students selected were: John Bond, Iliasa Nadredre, Jayden Charger, Tallis Mowles, Donald Tyson, Tarique Ase, Ezekiel Peter, Manessah Mariniki. IT may have only lasted a couple of seconds, and ended with a broken collarbone, but Nick Prus says his inaugural bullride was something he will never forget. Nick, general manager of the Weipa Bowls Club made the decision to buck out at Saturday’s Weipa Bullride so he could “tick it off his bucket list” and raise money for charity. Riding the bull “Coathanger” Nick looked quietly confident in the chute, but once the gate was opened he quickly came unstuck as the bull gave him the ride of his life. Undeterred by his crash landing Nick says he will be back to ride again next year and wants to add cattle scruffing to his repertoire. Sources close to Nick have revealed that they will be reviewing the rest of his “bucket list”. Western Cape Bulletin WEIPA BULLRIDE August 29, 2012 – Special Feature Page 3
