15-foot croc tagged in Wenlock River
Gotcha: Assisted by the Australia Zoo crocodile capture team,Terri Irwin leads the charge to subdue ‘Juergen’. At 4.69 metres ‘Juergen’ is the largest crocodile ever caught by the team on the Wenlock River during their annual croc research trip.
RESEARCHERS from Australia Zoo and The University of Queensland have been busy catching and tagging the Wenlock River’s saltwater crocodiles on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve during their annual research trip. The team concluded their trip on a high this week – reaching their target of 100 crocodiles – a goal
which has been in place since the project began in 2007. Another highlight of the final week of the trip included catching and tagging a massive fifteen foot and five inch (4.69 metre) estuarine crocodile named ‘Juergen’, after a German cameraman visiting the reserve. Juergen is the largest crocodile
the team have ever caught on the Wenlock River. The 100th crocodile to be caught and tagged was affectionately named ‘Wenlock’ in honour of its stunning home. The six foot four and a half inch (1.94 metre) reptile will be tracked and offer incredible insight into the species, particularly with regards to managing the co-
existence of crocodiles and humans. Australia Zoo owner, Terri Irwin, said she is thrilled with the result of the annual trip. “I am so proud to share this milestone for research with our crocodile capture team. They have successfully implemented Steve’s trapping techniques to safely catch and tag 100 crocodiles in the Wenlock River.
“Australia Zoo continues to invest the time and money necessary to enable the most comprehensive crocodile research conducted in the world. The information we learn from these 100 crocodiles will help us to protect crocs, and people into the future, added Terri. UU continued page 2

100 crocs tagged and tracked UU from page 1
Professor Craig Franklin from The University of Queensland echoed Terri’s thoughts. “Studies of this magnitude are showing us so much we didn’t know about these iconic animals, and to help us to understand how we need to manage them in the wild. I can only think of how excited Steve would have been to witness this milestone, something we did not expect to achieve, said Prof Franklin. “I am privileged to be able to conduct this extensive research with the expert team from Australia Zoo and the support of Terri, Bindi and Robert, he added. The annual research trip involves capturing, tagging and tracking crocodiles, like ‘Wenlock’, with acoustic trackers and GPS satellite transmitters. A miniature electronic device is implanted under the skin enabling researchers to track movements of the animal for up to ten years. The signal transmitted from

you, it scared me stiff. Awful rotting monsters kept rushing out of the murk and grabbing people, girls were screaming continuously, blood and body parts littered the place, and I think the hero might have been a vampire, or a werewolf. Whatever, it nearly made me wet myself, and that’s no fun at all. Mind you, it opened my eyes when I got home to the television and turned on the news. New plan for Aurukun bauxite lease THE State Government will seek new expressions of interest from companies interested in developing the Aurukun bauxite resource in far north Queensland. Premier Campbell Newman said the decision to start a fresh process had been driven by the government’s objective to maximise benefits to the Aurukun community, Traditional Owners and the State, and strong corporate interest. Chinese company Chalco previously held a lease to develop a mine under the condition it established a refinery or expanded refinery capacity, however this was cancelled in 2011 after a dispute with the then-Labor State Government. “This strategy simply will not work, Mr Newman said. “It was tried and failed, and with the looming carbon tax and skyrocketing electricity prices, it’s difficult to see how a new
refinery will ever be possible in Australia again. “However, my government has held discussions with interested parties and the appetite to mine the Aurukun bauxite is real and substantial. “Therefore, over the coming months we will now go to the market and seek fresh expressions of interest and by April next year we expect to shortlist bidders to participate in a tender process for the right to develop the resource. A decision is expected by the end of 2013. Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the government’s decision to revisit the development of the Aurukun bauxite resource had the backing of the Aurukun community and Traditional Owners. “Before proceeding with this new process, I met with the Mayor of the Aurukun Shire Council Mr Derek Walpo, councillors and the directors of the
Ngan Aak Kunch Aboriginal Corporation (NAK) to discuss the potential way forward, he said. “The NAK represents the native title holders - the Wik and Wik Way people. “The Aurukun Shire Council and the NAK directors who were present at the meeting expressed their strong support for development of the resource. Mr Newman said the Aurukun community would be involved in the process and the government would provide resources to ensure they are able to participate in a meaningful way. “Government assistance to the Aurukun community and Traditional Owners will include providing unused TAFE buildings for the community to meet and coordinate their input into the process. “The government’s objectives to start a new process are abundantly clear - there will be

the immediate benefits of jobs and infrastructure for the Aurukun community, Traditional Owners and the State, should development of the bauxite resource proceed. Mr Seeney said development of the Aurukun bauxite resource was essential to the creation of a vibrant economic future for the Aurukun community and traditional owners. “Not only will there be the immediate benefit of mining jobs and improvements to infrastructure, there will be additional benefits through the many business enterprises that could be established in Aurukun to service the mine, he said. “It is the aim of the government through the development of the Aurukun resource to ensure development of a mine and to make sure the people of Aurukun are well prepared to take advantage of the many business opportunities that the mine will deliver.

Jardine River ferry resumes operation )RU DOO \RXU UHIULJHUDWHG GU\ DQG KHDY\ KDXODJH QHHGV

STORIES have been filtering in of dozens of tourist vehicles and bus tour operators stranded at Jardine River, after an incident involving a prime mover shut down the ferry service across the crocodile-infested river last week. The Bamaga Road was closed after the ferry ramp broke as a prime mover was loaded onto it for its northbound trip across the river. The incident happened on the morning of Sunday, September 9. Over the ensuing week, many travellers headed for the Northern Peninsula Area were forced to turn around and make the long trek back down the track from the crossing, around 40km south of Bamaga. Heavy machinery was taken north to assist in moving the truck and its load

from the river, and the ferry resumed service on Saturday, September 15. The south side of the river bank has no kiosk or shop, so travellers had to return to Bramwell Station or just camp and sit it out. However The Western Cape Bulletin has heard rumours of people with insufficient supplies to either wait it out or make the trip back. Manager of the Alau Beach Campgrounds Tony Ross said with school holidays fast
approaching, he was glad the operators were able to get the ferry up and running again. A large number of tourists were on the south side of the river waiting to cross and a few on the north side, he said last week. “As I understand, the truck attempted to get on the ferry, Mr Ross said. “As it started to climb the ramp onto it, the sheer weight of the truck pushed it out into the river. “Once the ferry’s ramp left
the concrete approaches, the supports holding the ferry’s ramp gave way, sending the truck into the river. “They unhooked the truck’s trailer, loaded with gravel, and tried to pull it out with a dozer, to no avail, as it got caught on the edge of the concrete approaches. The ferry service is operated by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council. An NPARC spokesperson said the incident was currently under investigation.

Conditions right for record pig hunt IT’S time to dust off your hunting gear again as the annual Weipa Pig Hunt gets underway this weekend. Committee member and last year’s “most pigs” category winner, Steve Head, said that judging by the number of nominations received, this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest hunt yet. “Conditions this year look great and we are looking forward to a record number of pigs caught,” Steve said. “There are numerous categories for hunters to enter and the weigh-in is sure to produce some quality swine. We have some fantastic prizes and trophies up for grabs so it should be a terrific event.” The annual Weipa Pig Hunt highlights the damage caused to native flora and fauna by feral pigs and offers hunters the
opportunity to assist in their eradication, with just over 250 pigs accounted for by hunters in the 2011 hunt. The 2012 hunt kicks off at 5pm, this Friday, September 21 with all hunters mustering at the Carpentaria Golf Club for the start. Hunters must return to the Golf Club no later than 5pm Saturday, September 22 to weigh-in their catch. The weigh-in starts at 1pm on Saturday and continues until all hogs have been registered, followed by presentations at 7pm and live entertainment until late. There will be plenty of food and cold drinks available at the Golf Club during the weigh-in, and hunters and the public are invited to purchase raffle tickets on the night with some terrific prizes on offer, including four Trailblazer fridges.

Weipa CapeAbility workshop inspires participants
Around 80 carers, parents and teachers gathered at the Western Cape College PAC on Saturday for a one-day Autism and Asperger Syndrome workshop presented by international author, autism spectrum specialist and teacher Sue Larkey and sponsored by Rio Tinto Alcan. Ms Larkey said the participants were “enthusiastic and keen to learn” as they participated in hands-on activities and learned practical strategies for dealing with behavioural issues of children of all ages and abilities. “Strategies wear out,” Ms Larkey said, “and not all strategies will work for all children, but I hope I have given these people some new ideas.” Workshop attendees all agreed the workshop was informative, fun and extremely eye-opening.

Aaron Bond and Sea Swift receive Queensland Training Awards
RTAW employee Aaron Bond was named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards.
Sea Swift received the prestigious Queensland Employer of the Year award at the Queensland Training Awards, and will now represent Queensland at the Australian Training Awards to be held in Melbourne in November.
RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa employee Aaron Bond and shipping company Sea Swift were announced as winners at the 51st annual Queensland Training Awards held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday, September 14, 2012. Aaron and Sea Swift were among the 11 winning individuals and organisations selected from 57 state finalists at the training sector awards. Aaron, who has attained a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, was named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the awards night, after previously taking out the FNQ Regional Training Award in August. After completing a four-year apprenticeship with RTAW, Aaron believes the skills he has learned have provided him with different options. As the father of seven children, Aaron has encouraged his kids to take up traineeships, with two already successful. Aaron is actively involved in mentoring young Indigenous people, highlighting the opportunities that are available to them in the Weipa area. Cairns-based shipping company Sea Swift, which has depots in Weipa,
Seisia, Gladstone and on Thursday Island and Horn Island, won the prestigious Queensland Employer of the Year award for the first time, after also winning the FNQ Regional Training Award for the past two years. Chief executive officer Fred White said the company was thrilled to be recognised as providing the best vocational and education training out of any company in Queensland. “We’re absolutely delighted to have won this award for the first time, and it is a tribute to each and every one of our amazing staff,” he said. “It’s a fantastic achievement, and great acknowledgement for all the hard work put in by our people over a number of years.” Sea Swift is one of the largest employers in the region with more than 300 staff, and makes a significant contribution to the employment and skill development of local communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As Queensland Training Awards winners Aaron and Sea Swift will now represent Queensland at the Australian Training Awards to be held in Melbourne in November in a bid to be named the best in the nation.

Students get a taste of political life in Canberra FOUR Western Cape College students were among 100 Indigenous secondary students to converge on Parliament House last week for a work experience program with the Federal Government, aimed at boosting Indigenous employment in politics and the public service. Lillian Woolla (Aurukun), Tahila Zaro (Mer Island), Lynise Toilkalin (Aurukun) and Jomen Nawakie (Mapoon) were chosen to attend from over 400 applications Australia-wide for the Learn Earn Legend!-funded program. Students participated in a jampacked week of activities with days commencing at 7.30am and finishing after 10pm most nights. Activities included mock parliamentary sessions, Question Time, meeting Members of Parliament and advisors, and a career expo. While in Australia’s capital the students also visited the War Memorial, museum, the Department of Defence and Lake Burley-Griffin and enjoyed guest speakers including Learn Earn Legend! Ambassador Scott Prince and Yvonne Goolagong-Cawley. Year 12 student Jomen Nawakie spent time working in the office of
Queensland Senator, Jan McLucas as part of the week-long program. “The program introduces students to career opportunities in Australian political life and in the public service,” Senator McLucas said. “It was fantastic to have Jomen here in the nation’s capital. Students like Jomen are our future leaders and it is great they are expanding their horizons and really embracing this experience.” Jomen said he was excited to part of the work experience program. “I learned about how government works and what it’s like to work in a parliamentarian’s office,” said Jomen. “It really opened my eyes to not only how our parliament works but the many job opportunities that exist.” The other three students were placed with Simon Crean MP, Kate Ellis MP and Senator Peter Whysh-Wilson. Rocky Point rates reduction on WTA agenda this Friday A POSSIBLE rates concession for Rocky Point residents will be discussed at the Weipa Town Authority monthly meeting this Friday, September 21. Some residents of the suburb have requested a rates concession, saying they do not have the same services (specifically kerb and
channelling) as residents in other Weipa suburbs and yet have to pay the same, or similar rates. Rocky Point residents Yvette Carter and Kym Prentice have been collecting signatures on a petition requesting a 50 per cent reduction in their rates until kerb and channelling has been installed in the suburb, and
these will be presented to the WTA at Friday’s meeting. A number of Rocky Point residents have also decided to defer the payment of their annual rates pending the outcome of Friday’s meeting. The issue of kerb and channelling in the suburb has been an ongoing
one for many years and residents are hoping some headway can be made at the meeting. The WTA monthly meeting will be held at the Council Chambers, commencing at 8.30am, and members of the public are invited to support the Rocky Point residents’ deposition by attending.

Please, respect our properties EVERY person does it hard in some context or at some stage of their life, I believe that is a fair comment and most would be in agreement. What most would not agree with is the need to make life hard for others, on purpose, or through sheer ignorance or naivety. What I am certain about, is that every single pastoralist in Australia would advocate for more media attention brought to fire-lighting activities for fun, or as an often gratuitous excuse of ‘hazard-reduction’ at the wrong time of the year. Having the main Peninsula Development Road run straight through so many properties on Cape York opens up incessant traffic each travelling with a different purpose. We encourage travel up and down the road, however we are at a point where we begin to question whether we have just waved to a driver who lit up our livelihood. We wave, and question their integrity. Is this how we want to feel? Do we want to question someone when they pull up in our driveway or have a cuppa at a dam? Should we begin to feel insecure about our fencing and gates, wondering if we can trust those passing through? I am certain, in fact I am overly confident this is not the attitude Cape York property owners would like to have or even come close to but we have to begin to, unfortunately, question the actions of others. The family have been on this property for 45 years, with these past few years beginning to see an increase in the number of fires being lit, without explanations. I am not throwing generalised judgements at gold prospectors, hunters or those ‘cheap thrillers’, but I need to make everyone
WELCOME
Deliberately and carelessly lit fires cause much angst to Cape York pastoralists.
aware of the detrimental effects to lives, income, emotions, business and families that one quick action can cause. Someone drove past our property last Saturday, pulled up on the side of the road and put a match into our paddock. They had the conscious, determination to set us on fire. They decided they wanted to cause us, and so many others, a lot of pain, heartache, stress and trauma, so they did just that. Why? We ask ourselves every year when someone carries out this action, “why?”. At the exact same time, we had accidentally been lit-up on another part of the property, so had to request a great deal of help to control both fires in extremely windy, hot weather. It is reassuring to receive a huge amount of help from Weipa and Coen, but it is very disheartening to think someone deliberately wanted us all to experience this. My message to every single person who reads this letter is to be aware of those you see pulled up on the side of the road ‘for no reason’. Think before you throw a cigarette out the window, as it will likely light-up someone’s property.

I ask hunters to contact property owners before hunting and gain permission. Owners will send you to a spot that has previously been burned - there is no need to burn our land for us. Respect the land you drive on as someone does own and manage it. How would you feel if I drove down your driveway and set fire to your house? I have to leave that thought in your head because that is what could well have happened to mine. Emma Jackson, Wolverton Station, Cape York

Century-old equipment could be answer to ‘cruelty’ row By Stefan Armbruster
“IT’S a power-load stunner, so it’s the old conventional way that used to be used for processing cattle here in Australia and world-wide. “It’s not new technology, it’s been around for at least 100 years or so, “ says slaughter equipment supplier Ray Cronin, describing what could soon be the must-have tool for traditional hunters in Queensland. Known as a captive bolt stunner, it is used to humanely kill livestock. “You know if you hit it once with this, it’s dead, Cronin said. The half-metre length of steel weighs about 3kg and is fired using a blank cartridge. “Hold it on the necessary area, and (bang). Amendments to Queensland’s animal cruelty laws to remove an exemption for traditional hunters is bringing about the change. The state government passed amendments to the Animal Care and Protection Act on Wednesday, September 12, bringing Queensland into line with other Australian states. The legislative changes remove exemptions from prosecution for “cruel practices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, fulfilling a Liberal National Party (LNP) election promise. Hunting turtles and dugongs is an intrinsic part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander cultures. Mr Laurie Nona is a native title holder on Badu Island. “A turtle when you catch it, the thing is you have to kill it; the one way we do to kill it is to hit it in the head, with a wood or a rock, usually a rock. “Because it’s going to get cut on the beach and on the beach as you see we have rocks. There are different methods in different communities. Another is known as sticking: slitting a turtle’s throat and bleeding it. Torres Strait Island Regional Council Mayor Fred Gela says: “These practices that we are practising today are part of our identity, it is what makes who we are. Some have stopped hunting altogether to sustain turtle and dugong populations. Queensland’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh says the government doesn’t oppose hunting, it just wants
to end unnecessary suffering for the endangered animals. “The communities will help us define that over the coming period. I would have thought for example that bludgeoning animals to death or butchering them while they’re still alive for example is not appropriate. The right to traditional hunting is guaranteed in federal native title law, the Torres Strait Treaty and the Yanner versus Eaton High Court decision of 1999. The amendments will regulate native title rights and some traditional owners say they will challenge the law all the way to the High Court. The parliamentary committee review said the amendments could be unenforceable. Mr McVeigh said: “That’s not right according to the legal advice I’ve received in the process of drafting this legislation. “So we’ve mapped out a process that has due regard for those other acts, and again I make the point this is not about banning the practice of native hunting activities. No other state or territory in Australia has an exemption for traditional hunters. Two agencies enforce Queensland’s Animal Care and Protection Act. One is the minister’s department, the other is the RSPCA. RSPCA principal scientific officer Ms Mandy Paterson only gives qualified support to the amendments. “The word cruelty often implies intent, so I feel using the word cruelty in terms of indigenous people hunting is not appropriate because there is no intent to cause suffering. Graphic footage broadcast earlier this year of a turtle being slaughtered in the Torres Strait caused public outcry. Coming during the state election campaign, the Liberal National Party promised to remove the exemption. When they took office they rushed the amendments into parliament, but there was no consultation with the RSPCA or indigenous representative bodies and councils like those of mayor Fred Gela. “So I think we really really need to acknowledge what we’re actually dealing with in the first instance, and rule a line in the sand and come back and consult with the people whose

0(&+$1,&$/ 5(3$,56 100-year old-technology: Ray Cronin with a power-load bolt stunner. livelihoods depend on it, which is my people. The problem is defining cruelty when it comes to turtles and dugongs and the most appropriate killing methods. RSPCA’s Mandy Paterson has begun investigating. “That is something that I really can’t answer at this point. The RSPCA defines a humane death as one where they lose consciousness rapidly and then death follows without regaining consiousness. Penalties for breaking the law will include up to $100,000 fines and two years in prison. Minister McVeigh says the government is already talking to those affected. “We have a period after the Act is passed of up to 12 months for consultation. It’s a grace period if you like, where we’ll consult with communities to define on a local basis how those traditional hunting practices should be carried out. “I guess it’s ultimately up to the courts to judge what’s cruelty and what’s not. The law says each death must occur with as little pain as is reasonable. Mandy Paterson says turtles aren’t easy to kill. “Turtles dive and can hold their breath for quite a long time. It’s been shown that even if you cut a turtle’s head off, its head is still aware of the pain for up to an hour after that event and that’s one reason why that method is inhumane. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups have turned to the RSPCA to help find suitable methods - that’s where the captive bolt comes in. US company Jarvis is one of the world’s largest suppliers of slaughter equipment to the livestock industry.
Raymond Cronin is the managing director in Australia and New Zealand. “So when you actually place the stunner on the head of the animal and fire it, because we use a blank charge and it’s the speed of the bolt that travels through the brain and kills the animal instantly. Kills or stuns? Kills it. Whether it will work on turtles is not yet known and the RSPCA has done no research on what’s appropriate for dugongs. In fact there’s no extra government funding for research or enforcement. Mandy Paterson believes much more needs to be done for the legislation to work. “It would just be a piece of paper, and it might be a tick-off, that’s one of our promises we made for our first 100 days, but unless it makes some difference out there for turtles, what’s the point? Minister McVeigh is unimpressed. “Well I think that’s totally incorrect and I think the RSPCA would do well to focus on their own responsibilities, particularly with pets in the metropolitan areas and the state. My department supports them very strongly, including in a financial sense, to do that. In some communities there’s a willingness to negotiate. Mayor Gela says they’ll only go so far. “We have adapted through the time, which is why we’re still here today. The government says it has kept its election promise and is doing all it can to accommodate indigenous rights. But for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities, that mightn’t be enough and they could soon be testing the limits of the law.

Skipping is the ultimate workout SKIPPING, as described in the English dictionary, is “jumping repeatedly over a rope which is held at both ends and turned over the head and under the feet.
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
Customer Service: 1800 640 079 Weipa: 07 4069 7309 Cairns: 07 4038 7777
It sounds much simpler as it is. When was the last time you held a skipping rope in your hand? A while ago? If that is the case then rope skipping may be the workout you have been looking for. Skipping is such a complex exercise it not only tones all parts of your legs and your buttocks but also improves your cardiovascular fitness, agility, co-ordination, balance and rhythm. Rope skipping has some great mental benefits as it requires a high level of coordination and works both sides of the brain simultaneously, which can help to gain more concentration. It burns twice as many calories as walking and with some pumping music can be great fun. It takes only 10 minutes a day and can improve your fitness levels in no time. How to get the correct adjustment on your jump rope: • Place your jump rope on the ground • Stand on the mid-point of the rope (an equal distance between the handles) • Grasp the handles and pull them to your chest while standing on the rope

• The top of the handles should reach about six inches (15cm) below the collar bone (not as high as the collar bone or as low as the upper abs - if in doubt, go a bit too long and shorten the rope a bit as you get more experienced). Learning the skill of jumping rope - your first two weeks of the program: Most beginners “double bounceâ€? in between rotations. This actually allows them to rest their core a bit as well as their calf muscles in between rotations and means that they have a low level of core fitness. You will want to jump cleanly in between each rotation and keep the abs and core tight. The goal of your first two weeks of jumping rope is to eventually work up to a point where you can jump rope for five minutes solid without having to stop and start again. On top of all the fun getting into a skipping rope workout you don’t have to invest much time or money. Enjoy skipping!
WE are looking at the “The Awful Horror spoken of by the Lord in the Good News Bible from Mark Ch 13 v 14. Other Bible versions like the KJV (King James Version) and the NIV, (New International Version) use words similar to “The abomination that causes desolation. Whatever form this unholy thing is that is trampling all over the Jewish Holy of holies, it has no fear of God. I like the New Revised
By Rev. Michael Connolly
Standard Version of the Bible that describes this horror as “the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be. When looking at the Lord’s reference to the prophet Daniel and his prophecies in Mark Ch 13 vs 14-, we find that the part the Lord referred to has two layers to it; the first layer we learned about last week involved Antiochus Epiphanes. The other layer actually leaps over the time of the awful horror when
General Titus and his army of 70ad devastated Jerusalem and the Temple, and is referring to an evil person that is to appear not too far ahead, in our present time. This person will also be “an abomination that causes desolation, but his devastating effect on humankind, and especially Christians, will be truly worldwide. His popular title, well known among Christians today, is the Anti-Christ. Rev Michael Connolly.

CROSSWORD No. 116
SUDOKU No. 116
Your Lucky VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Don’t let other people waste your energy. You have a lot to do and won’t want to mess about. Let them know you have limited time. Romance. If you are not clear about what you want, your energy will be wasted, no matter how much enthusiasm you have. You may need to find a new focus in the relationship.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may be a little surprised by some recent comments. Your friends will soon be following your advice, however. Romance. Your partner may be hiding something from you. Don’t assume the worst, though! Allow them to divulge their secrets. You don’t need to be labelled as a snoop.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)
FOR KIDS
You mustn’t allow yourself to be held back by other people’s pessimism. You have plenty to do and need to overcome their opinions. Romance. This should be a very good week for romance; provided you take it easy. Your partner will not respond if they are not relaxed. Plan ahead so you can take time off.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A chance meeting later in the week may be less accidental than it seems. You’ll shortly be seeing more of this person. Romance. A fleeting encounter with a person born overseas will prove interesting. Be careful not to get too involved. Do you really want to begin a long-distance relationship?
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A long conversation with a friend will help you to understand this person better. In the past, you may have underestimated them. What drives them to do better? Romance. You will be in a very romantic mood. Everything will go well, provided you don’t allow your emotions to go overboard.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) Try not to spend too much time worrying about other people’s problems. You have enough to do this week. Romance. A phone call during the week will be quite uninteresting at first. After a while, the mood will become warmer. Invite this person for coffee to discuss the topic further.
FINDWORD No. 116 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t be reluctant to make a change which you know will be in your best interest. You have an idea which is worth taking up. Now you just need a plan of action. Romance. Make sure that your partner supports any moves which you plan to make. You may need some moral support!

MUDDY RIVER
Be careful to keep an agreement which you made recently with a friend. It is very important to them and they will feel let down if you don’t keep your promise. Romance. You will be especially sensitive to your partner’s feelings. You may know exactly what they are thinking. Let them tell you if you’re right.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You will enjoy being cast as the centre of an important decision. Use your power to improve the outcome and not to benefit your own desires. Romance. Your ability to see the positive side to things will help to give your love-life a boost today. Is your partner also feeling the positive vibes?
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) You will need to use your intuition to get to the bottom of a recent mystery. Recap your previous thoughts on the subject and see how they’ve changed. Romance. This will not really be the best time for a romantic gettogether. You may find it difficult to relax properly. Time alone will help.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)
QUOTE OF THE DAY The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything. the young know everything. – Oscar Wilde Page 14 Western Cape Bulletin September 19, 2012
SOLUTIONS No. 116
One area of your life will be finishing and a new one starting. You must assess your options and make certain that you are heading in the right direction. What was your original intent? Romance. This will be a good time for meeting new people. One person you come across may be a little unusual, however.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You might take longer than usual getting to work today. There is not much you can do apart from being patient and leaving earlier. Romance. Your partner will greatly appreciate a small present. Give them something which they cannot normally afford and you will be thanked.

Controversy sees Cowboys bow out

FURIOUS North Queensland coach Neil Henry has accused NRL referees of not being up to the standard the competition deserves after his side went down 22-12 to premiers Manly in Friday’s semi-final at Allianz Stadium. With the scores locked at 12-12, the Sea Eagles scored two contentious second-half tries to win the game and book a clash with the Storm in Melbourne next Friday for a place in the grand final. Henry and his skipper Johnathan Thurston were livid after the game, following the decisions to award efforts by Jorge Taufua and Michael Oldfield. Both were given the benefit-of-thedoubt by video referees Paul Simpkins and Steve Clark, with the Cowboys claiming Taufua made a double movement before touching down. But the decision to give Oldfield’s try left the visitors feeling robbed after Kieran Foran appeared to knock the ball forward from a Daly Cherry-Evans kick, allowing Jamie Lyon to bundle the ball towards Oldfield. “The players in this competition have taken the game to the next level,” Henry said.

“There is no question as the quality of our product, but we’re not keeping pace in the officiating. “Our season hung on a couple of decisions and I don’t care if you put five in the video box. “I am not saying they are biased, they are incompetent.” Thurston said he was angered by the loss and claimed during the game to referee Shayne Hayne that his side had: “Twice been robbed.” “Those decisions, they can’t justify them, I am just gutted by them,” Thurston said after the match. Manly’s clash with the Storm next weekend will be a rematch of the 2007 and 2008 grand finals and Toovey is looking forward to the challenge of facing an old foe. South Sydney are one step away from a first grand final appearance in 41 years after brushing aside Canberra 38-16 in Saturday’s NRL semi-final at ANZ Stadium. Rookie halfback Adam Reynolds was the star of the show for the Rabbitohs, scoring a try and kicking seven goals on his way to becoming only the second
The Princess speaks I HEARD Dad talking about having to write a story for the newspaper, and after the Cats got beaten last week he has started walking around with a cricket ball in his hand, and reckons he couldn’t write about the footy if they came up with a way to make his hair grow back. I’m not sure what he means, he’s never had hair. I found the computer turned on and thought Id better help out the Old Man and come up with something for Weipa footy fans. So this week at our house we had The Deputy arranging some superhero fighting with the Goodies winning over the Baddies and The Avengers won the day in the end. In direct contrast the Magpies won the day over the Eagles on Saturday and Dad has real concerns that the dark side of the force is alive and well. I’m a bit worried that Dad has hit rock bottom after the Cats lost and
he started talking about the cricket season as soon as the siren sounded on the Cats v Dockers last week. I reckon he needs to toughen up and face the fact that as the great players get older and retire there will be an inevitable decline in performance. I went to school all last week and learned a lot, not unlike the Dockers on Friday night with the Crows teaching them how to deal with week two of the finals. Ross Lyon must coach the most boring type of footy since Paul Roos circa 2004, and I reckon I could handle two whole hours of my two-times tables rather than watching that sort of rubbish. Dad has continued on his diet as prescribed by Management (or as I call her, The Queen) and he has really struggled. His temper has worn as thin as the hair on the top of his head and he has even started exercising.
player in the club’s history to chalk up more than 200 points in a season. Eric Simms was the last player to record that feat in 1970 - the year the Rabbitohs won the 19th of their 20 premierships - and they must now beat Canterbury next Saturday if they are to add to that tally. The win was Souths’ first finals victory in 25 years. Tries from Reynolds, Andrew Everingham and Sam Burgess helped the home side into a 20-10 advantage at halftime, but despite being on the back foot for the majority of the opening stanza, tries from Sam Williams and Sandor Earl, just before the break, gave the Raiders some hope. The second half started in a similar fashion, with Reynolds, criticised for his quiet performance in the loss the Melbourne last week, continuing to shine. Despite being under pressure from two Raiders players, the 23-year-old somehow threaded a grubber towards the end-goal area that deceived Josh Dugan, and Dylan Farrell pounced to score. Michael Maguire’s side looked in full control, but a risky no-look pass from
back-rower Dave Taylor was punished when the Raiders won possession, floated the ball out wide towards Reece Robinson, and the winger scored his 17th try in an impressive debut season. Dugan’s conversion closed the gap to 10 points once again, but Souths continued to press in attack. John Sutton was held up just short of the line on the hour-mark, only for Shaun Berrigan to be punished for the Raiders for not being square of the marker. Reynolds kicked the penalty and four minutes later the game was iced when a penalty try was awarded to the hosts after Greg Inglis was hauled back by Blake Ferguson without the ball. And 10 minutes from time Reynolds produced a perfectly-weighted kick to the right corner after Inglis made a 50-metre break, to turn defence into attack, and Everingham did well to get the ball down and score.

FINALS WEEK 3 – Fri, SEPT 21 - Sat, SEPT 22
FRI, SEPT 21 7.50pm Sydney v Collingwood @ ANZ Stadium SAT, SEPT 22 5.15pm Hawthorn v Adelaide @ MCG This is not the Dad I know, but more like the Dad I hear Mum reminiscing about from when they were younger. I wonder what his name was when he was a boy. Cocoa (or Azrael as Dad calls her) is now an outside cat, as well as an inside cat, and she has really been having fun. Dad tells me she especially has fun at about 3am when she runs around his bedroom and tries to sleep on his face. Dad now tries to wake her up whenever he sees her having an afternoon nap to try and make sure she sleeps all night. The bird next door has started making strange noises and the chooks have stopped laying eggs. Dad reckons its because Cocoa is stalking them and scaring the “wit” out of them. At least I think that’s what he said. Today I went to Elsie’s house and ate licorice and banana cake and her Dad loves licorice just like my Dad.

Rection wasn’t careful. AFL LADDER I don’t think he is going too well TEAM W L B P though, because he had some of his Hawthorn 17 5 1 68 homebrew on Saturday night and Mum Adelaide 17 5 1 68 said that if he was producing anymore Sydney 16 6 1 64 wind we’d have to hook him up to the Collingwood 16 6 1 64 turbine and plug him into the grid. I West Coast 15 7 1 60 don’t know what that means but it Geelong 15 7 1 60 Fremantle 14 8 1 56 doesn’t sound good. North Melbourne 14 8 1 56 So we missed the footy because St Kilda 12 10 1 48 Dad gave up, but I reckon this weekend Carlton 11 11 1 44 the Hawks and Swans will win through Essendon 11 11 1 44 to the big one. I hope the Swans get up Richmond 10 11 1 42 as I can’t stand the Hawks colours, and Brisbane 10 12 1 40 Dermot Brereton used to play for them Port Adelaide 5 16 1 22 and Dad taught me he was as bad as Western Bulldogs 5 17 1 20 Collingwood, so I don’t like them. Marathon squash games played Send your ďŹ shing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com WELL, I just had three days off and the winds just wouldn’t let up so it was housework for me. The winds finally slowed down so you could get to fish in the mornings, but usually came up after lunch. Before I start my report I would like to let every one know about the big fishing competition up - the Cape York Classic, held by the Seisia Fishing Club on the weekend of October 27 and 28. There is lots of cash and prizes to be won and the cost of a $25 membership for the weekend includes breakfast Saturday and Sunday and a barbecue dinner on Saturday night. Camping is available at Seisia Camp Grounds. To register your interest please contact Colleen or Peter 4083 0201, 0409 570 930 or fax 4083 0210. When the weather permitted there were some great fish caught offshore. Darren Bradford took his kids out fishing around the leads for some good captures and the highlight would have to be young Ben, Darren’s seven-year-old son landing a 119cm Mackerel and Trevally up to a metre. I had some customers wanting to know where to go for a fish so I sent them to a little reef south of the entrance and the Mackerel played the game until the Sharks arrived and started taking their fish and lures. Teachers at Western Cape College Rob Ashford and Jacob Gigliotti were challenged to a fishing trip by one of their students, Nicholas Keough, aboard First Priority. The weather gods were kind, a slight 10 knot breeze took the heat out of the day, and some big fish were caught. Fingermark, Jewies, Trevalley and finally a decent Red Emperor were landed, and a nice Coral Trout landed by Mr G. There was plenty of stirring between the student and teachers and Nicholas’ Red was proclaimed fish of the day. Owey had a charter with Fish Up at the Skardon for some international
visitors from South Africa and New Zealand and they managed to land Permit on the flats and Barra up in the creeks, all on the fly. The also got some impressive Tuna on the fly as well. By using guides these visitors had a holiday to remember and will be back to fish our waters again. Fishing the nine mile Frank, Russell, Aaron and Ray caught Mackerel on floaters and Cobia, monster Sweetlip, Nanygais and big Gts on the bottom, only to be taxed by the sharks on the way up. The river systems have also been producing some good fish with some meter-plus Barra falling to live baits. It appears the winter doldrums may be gone and things should start to hot up as the weather gets warmer. The bigger fish will start to move down from the fresh to get ready to spawn and should be readily available for shore based anglers.
Red Beach would be worth a throw, or the Mission River bridge, as these spots start to produce big fish this time of the year. Up at Hey Point there have been some large bait balls and this week there have been reports of big Spanish Mackerel being landed up here, as well as some pesky sharks. Queenfish have been patrolling the main river and the boys and girls fishing off Evans Landing have been scoring a few. There are Bream, Trevalley and the odd Jew here as well. Darren Lee and Notso have been chasing the Sails and have found a few out wide, but there is a lot of water between them. The best water seems to be from the 20-metre mark, so the billfish competition should be a blinder. ‘Til next week, light breezes and tight lines. Cheers China
LAST week’s A grade Weipa Squash Club fixtures saw only two forfeits, and the results for Teams Darth Vader and Boba Fett were as follows: A2 Rod Beilby won the first game convincingly, then lost the next game dismally against Jeff Berry, but Jeff also won the third game then Rod forced the fourth to long and took it, but went down in the fifth (2-3). A3 Jay Dumbleton played hard to force the first game to long, but lost all three to Jarrod Stockman (0-3). Jimmy Baira played as sub for A3 Jay Murray and defeated Amanda McKenzie in four games (3-1), after losing his own marathon five-game match against A5 Justin Hyytinnen, resulting in a one-point win by Justin (2-3). Team Skywalker were defeated by Team Obi Wan Kenobi when A1 Luke Dorsett played consistently scoring “5s against Rod Wawrzyniak’s “9s but took one game off him which means he is returning to form (1-3). A2 Ross Hyytinnen defeated Steve Lugsdin (who played as sub for Tom Murray) (3-1). Adam Woodhouse (as sub for A3 Ben Tantau) won one “long game against Cole Dalton, but it was Cole’s repetitive consistency that won the game (1-3). A5 Michael Cridland scored a massive 40 points and won two games against Ben Braun’s 43 points in this five-game marathon match (2-3). Team R2-D2 suffered defeat in every match at the hands of Team Hans Solo when A5 Adam Blocksidge went down to Joe Buckley (1-3), A4 Sherie Hinschen lost to Wendy Long (1-3) and A3 Dallas Goodwin was not up to scratch when he played Glen Egan (0-3). A2 Aaron Schleich lost his own match against Nick Brookes, but only by two points (1-3), then played (as sub for Owen Witt as A1) against Grant Foster and put up a good fight but lost (1-3). B2 Josh Donnelly defeated Tom Bellinger by two points in their marathon match (3-2), and B3 Nicole Dearling won her first game against Melissa Ghee, but then went down in the next three (1-3). B4 Tim Manning lost his first game against Ben Ghee but powered forward to take the next three (3-1). Doug Shaw (as sub for B5 Renee Williams) won the match (but in points was down by one) (3-2). B6 Lucy Boxall and Yours Squashfully had a fantastic match of four games with the second game stretching to “long, but Lucy won (3-1). Team Yoda outclassed Team C-3PO when B1 Otis Drum defeated Donna O’Neill (3-1). B2 Kerry Scales was forced to play three “long games when she defeated Wade Spry (3-0), and B3 Brooke Gwynne won the first game but Wayne Ailey then powered on to take the next three (1-3). Jason Nieuwoudt (as sub for B4 Andrew Glen) was able to win one game against Katie Delfs (1-3), and B6 Jess Hall defeated Shaun (as sub for Chris Byers) (3-0). Team Ewoks and Team Jabba were evenly matched when B1 Randall O’Neill defeated Ben Smith in a high-scoring marathon match (3-2), and B2 Emma Thomas was the better player against Patrick Lightart (3-0). B3 Bianca Borg was narrowly defeated by Fiona Newsome by four points (2-3) and B6 Charissa Hill was defeated by Brandon Waretini (two upcoming talents) (0-3). Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

IT was a big turn out with some exciting action for the soccer grand finals. Club presentations were held after the last games, and all players received a trophy or prize. President Greg Barnes thanked parents and referees for their efforts in ensuring the weekly games were a success and the Weipa Bowls Club for their generous support of our club this year. Thanks to The Western Cape Bulletin for featuring our players in the sports pages each week, and to Woolworths for supplying the sausages for the sausage sizzle. Squirts Two fields of fun filled games enjoyed by all players. Tykes Green v Gold A fast and competitive game with a lovely breeze to keep the players cool. Jaylen scored an early goal for Gold, followed closely by a Green goal by Gary. Competitive spirits were high and there was a couple of tumbles in the scramble to the ball. A few rallies of big kicks up, and back down the ďŹ eld, with a strong attempt at goal by Kieran which was blocked by Gary. Seconds later Jaylen struck a shot through the crowd of players to meet the net. Great moves in defence from Isaac for Green and very strong attacking moves from Tianna for Gold and Riley for Green. As well as committing to minimum prescribed training commitments in their club programs, these members must at-
tend four camps prior to the State championships in December. The Weipa Swimming Club will be holding the first of two sign-ons this Saturday, September 22 at the Town Pool between 9 and 11am. Please come along and sign-up for the 2012/13 season. For those who wish to be scheduled into training straight after the school holidays, you will need to attend this sign-up.
