Weipa hunters weigh-in By Giembra Busmer
ORGANISERS of the annual Weipa Pig Hunt have reported that this year’s event was a resounding success, with a 128.1kg stonker taking the top prize. Weipa Pig Hunt committee member, Steve Head, estimates around 500 people enjoyed the weekend, with 124 hunters in 45 teams bringing home the bacon in the form of 283 pigs. The number of pigs killed exceeded last year’s tally by 32. The annual pig hunt highlights the need to humanely eradicate feral pigs who cause extensive damage to native flora and fauna.
Steve Rhen (a member of The Tonners Team, along with Jake May and Ty Beckwith) looking ecstatic with his catch during the 2012 Weipa Pig Hunt.
Steve was also pleased to report this year’s event was “incident free with no complaints from stations, Rangers, the Police or public and praised all hunters for their responsible attitudes. “Everyone behaved themselves and it was great to see so many families enjoying Saturday’s events at the Carpentaria Golf Club, Steve commented. “I would also like to say thank you to all our sponsors who’s support was tremendous. All monies made by the competition will again be donated to local non-profit community and sporting associations.

Weipa boys trial for Northern Pride Academy THREE Weipa boys travelled to Cairns recently to trial for Northern Pride Rugby League Football Club’s Academy Under 18s squad for next season. Joe Bond, Whyte Adidi-Nixon and Shaquille Adidi-Nixon are all hoping to get picked for the 2013 squad when the Pride name the successful triallists next month. The three boys will be up against some tough competition, with more than 80 players attending the trials at Barlow Park in Cairns – more than double the number of Under 18s triallists from last year. Northern Pride chief executive officer Chris Sheppard said the newly-expanded Academy program was more successful than ever. “This year, we’ve had more than 200 kids come down to trial with us for the 2013 season Under 18s and Under 16s squad. “ T h a t ’s a p h e n o m e n a l number, and just shows the passion we have for the game of rugby league in this region. Sheppard said the Intrust Super Cup club is proud to offer opportunities to players from across the whole of far north Queensland. “As a footy club we are proud of our roots and are lucky to have strong support from across our region, said Sheppard. “We do a heap of work around the Cape in partnership with the Take Pride Program, and this is another way of establishing pathways for local players to make a name for themselves and get to the next level. “One of the main reasons the Northern Pride was set up in the first place was to provide pathways for our young junior footy stars to progress through the ranks. “Having the boys from Weipa come down to trial for the Pride is another example of this.
significant expansion of the program, and provides more opportunities for the best young footy talent in the region. “The expanded program will incorporate strong partnerships between the Pride, North Queensland Cowboys, local rugby league and the schooling system in a first of its kind anywhere in the State. Northern Pride has already confirmed itself as a nursery of some of the hottest young rugby league players in Queensland. Former Pride Under 18s Academy stars Travis Peeters and Ben Hampton both played for the Queensland Under 20s State of Origin team this year, with Hampton captaining the side. Hampton was also recently named in the Australian Junior Kangaroos team to play the Junior Kiwis before the Test
match in Townsville on October 13. Sheppard said no other sport or club in North Queensland could show the pathway the Pride created for players and youngsters from the region. “Pride youngsters are being selected by Queensland, our Under 18s made the State semi-finals, we have Pride boys currently in the North Queensland Cowboys Under 20s side, Joel Riethmuller and a number of other locals are in NRL squads, and we’ve got former NRL stars in our current Intrust Super Cup squad, he said. “It’s an exciting time for everyone involved at the club. “We continually show that we’re all about creating opportunities for local youngsters – and we have the evidence to back it up.

Pride Chief Executive Officer Chris Sheppard said the club was doubling the size of its Academy program, which will now cover 12-18 year olds for the first time ever. “This year we had 70 kids in the Academy, with three 15-year-olds, thirty-two 16-year-olds, fifteen 17-yearolds, and twenty 18-year-olds, he said. “In 2013, we are going to be twice the strength, with 140 young players involved containing 20 players in each age group from 12 to 18. “The 15-year-olds will be eligible for the statewide Under 16 side, and the 17-year-olds will be able to play for the Under 18 team. “The kids in the Under 12, 13 and 14 age groups will be in development squads. “This is an exciting and

NEWS Maintenance funding for local schools MEMBER for Cook David Kempton has announced that 45 schools would receive vital maintenance funding thanks to the State Government’s $200 million school maintenance fund. Mr Kempton said each school would receive up to
$160,000 to fix existing priority maintenance issues under the two-year Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund. “Too many of our state schools have maintenance issues that have become potential health and safety hazards for our children, Mr Kempton said. “This new fund is about making our schools safer. It’s about ensuring our children have access to the best school
facilities and a safer environment in which to learn. In addition to the Maintenance Fund schools were now untied from QBuild which meant private providers could carry out maintenance work. To qualify for the funding P&Cs will be asked to obtain three quotes from professionals to submit with their application. The Government will also ask P&C organisations and schools to contribute
to the maintenance task if they have funds to do so. $100 million would be available in 2012-13 and a further $100 million would be available in 2013-14. Schools to receive funding are: Aurukun $160,000, Coen $28,550, Kowanyama $160,000, Laura $7,500, Lockhart $160,000, Prompuraaw $47,480, Western Cape College Weipa $160,000, Western Cape College Mapoon $102,150.

EIGHT keen employees began their lives as Woolworths Weipa staff members this week as part of the Woolworths Indigenous Employment Project. The project is one of the Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreements strategies to diversify Indigenous employment in all sectors in the Western Cape. Negotiations were opened by WCRPA in early 2012 with Woolworths in Brisbane and Cairns, and further discussions with stakeholders, including
ABN 36 065 053 009
CEA, Itec, VPG and TAFE, along with Woolworths Cairns and Weipa progressed the project further. An initial intake of six local Indigenous employees as a pilot was decided upon, with a further intake of six after a few months. Conditions on training, mentoring, buddy system cross-cultural training and work experience were agreed to and applications were forwarded. Woolworths held a community information forum on
Wednesday, September 5 at Napranum CEA for interested applicants and interviews were conducted the following week. Although originally intending to employ six applicants, WeipaWoolworths manager Jenny Everist was so impressed with the eight candidates that all eight have been engaged and commenced work at the supermarket this week. CEA have played a major part in supporting the successful applicants. WCRPA co-ordinator Liz Logan said this was a fantastic
outcome for the project. “Woolworths have been very supportive of this initiative and we are all hoping to see Woolworths, which has an excellent diversity policy and Reconciliation Act Plan, have increased staff from the group that represents up to50 per cent of the Western Cape’s population. The newly-inducted Weipa Woolworths staff are: Serina Madua, Helen Asera, Charlene Boxer, Lydia Sigai, Rhonda Parry, Ian Motten, Alston Sigai and Veronica Savo.

THIS week is “National Op Shop Week so what better time to head on down to the Weipa Community Care Association secondhand shop and either make a donation or shop for a bargain. WCCA community development worker Tegen Wilson said the shop is currently well-stocked with a large range of clothing, books and household items. “We have clothing from newborn to work shirts and pants, Tegen said. “A lot of clothing items we receive still have the tags on them, and with adult items starting at $3 and weekly specials you are sure to bag yourself a bargain. The shop does not have a lot of room for larger items however strollers, prams and smaller furniture items such as coffee tables are in stock regularly. Clothing donations should be clean, undamaged, and reasonably wrinkle-free. Clothing can be folded and packed in sturdy boxes or bags and where possible avoid hangers. Pockets should be emptied and any belts securely fastened to their appropriate items. “We appreciate donations that are clean and in good working order,
A CAPE York forum to be held in Laura next week is set to debate a number of hot issues which have reached boiling point for community leaders. Topics to be covered at the two day forum include: • Protecting Unmanaged Landscape • The Cape York Regional Plan • World Heritage Listing Of Cape York A recent survey conducted on the Cape by Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF) shows that there is a high level of disillusionment and dissatisfaction in the way in which issues have been dealt with by all Governments. The study showed that entropy across the sectors was 64%. This is an exceedingly high level of entropy concentrated around
systems, processes, efficiencies and regulations and indicated a need for an immediate change in policy. The research also found that there is a very strong will for the responsibility of land management to be returned back to the people. “We take the results of this survey very seriously as the end result of such a high level of entropy will mean a complete disengagement from the community around environmental management which would be disastrous for all. We will work with political leaders and community to ensure this level of disillusionment and dissatisfaction is reduced. I am glad to report that so far the new State Government has been very positive in its responses to
the community to date, said Cape York Sustainable Futures, CEO, Trish Butler. The forum will be hosted on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 and will coincide with a celebration to mark Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF), formerly Cape York Peninsula Development Association (CYPDA) 25th Anniversary. The lobbying and economic development organisation was established back in 1987 with the help of Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and then Cairns Mayor Kevin Byrne to assist residents, business and land owners of Cape York to have their voice heard by political leaders. “This is an important time for the people of Cape York Peninsula with the Queensland
Government undertaking a regional plan for Cape York and the Commonwealth Government looking to a nomination for a potential World Heritage listing of Cape York Peninsula by February 2013, said Trish Butler. The Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF) AGM will also be hosted over the two days along with a facilitated workshop to be held on the Friday afternoon for all who want to attend and contribute to “Building Our Future Together. The workshop will be facilitated by Annalise Jennings from Dynamic Exchange. The Open Forum will continue on Saturday morning along with a field/fun day. For more information go to www.cysf.com.au

Students to visit ancient European sites Mapoon Road accident highlights need for caution ANCIENT History students from Western Cape College Weipa Campus will be visiting historic sites in Italy, Greece and the United Kingdom during the September school holidays. College Principal Leon Proud said the Year 10, 11, and 12 students, their parents, and teachers have worked extremely hard to fundraise to subsidise the trip. “They raised over $10,000 by organising, and participating in terrific community events such as a Rock Quiz night, assisting at the Weipa Fishing Classic, and running barbecues at other venues around Weipa.” Mr Proud said. The students and staff at Western Cape College Weipa should be proud of their efforts and the success they have had in raising so much money in such a short time. “The group, including 12 students, one

parent, and two staff members, fly out of Weipa on Saturday September 22. The aim of the trip is to expose students to the physical evidence of history, instead of just reading it from a textbook,” Mr Proud said. The students will spend four nights in Rome, visiting castles, the Vatican Museum collections, the Colosseum, and the ancient sites of Rome. They then travel to Greece, and spend time visiting
Athens, Delphi, Meteora, and Kalambaka, before heading to London and to visit sites such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben. “The tour will enhance student learning by developing their ability to think and learn independently, be adaptable to changing environments, and open up their ‘world’ with newfound confidence, and maturity,” Mr Proud said. “Ancient History
is a specialist subject offering students the opportunity to learn skills they will retain their whole lives”. “The College previously offered this trip to Ancient History students in 2009, and aims to be able to offer it every second year,” he concluded. The Western Cape Bulletin is looking forward to catching up with the students on their return and sharing their stories with our readers.
AN accident involving two cars, one towing a boat, has highlighted the need for caution when driving on unsealed roads. A Western Cape Bulletin reader who was driving past the site on Saturday afternoon stopped at the scene to offer assistance. The reader was told by the vehicle’s occupants that two vehicles were travelling north on the Weipa to Mapoon Road when a third vehicle attempted to overtake. It appeared the driver of the overtaking vehicle lost control on the dirt road and careered into the ute towing the boat, with both cars coming to rest in the bush beside the road. There are several S-bends on the section of road the accident occurred on and there are have been a number of accidents in this area in the past. A spokesperson for the Weipa Police said
drivers in Cape York needed to pay particular attention when overtaking in dusty conditions, and on dirt roads, and should always drive to
the prevailing conditions. There were no reports of injuries from the accident and both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Power to the people plight update ON Friday, September 21 Kym Prentice and Yvette Carter presented the facts relating to the absence of kerb and channelling in the streets of Rocky Point to elected Weipa Town Authority members, Weipa’s Chairperson and Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. The resident’s plight to attain this
amenity was deliberated and many facets pertaining to this 11 year-old, (at least), predicament was addressed. The possibility of a concession on Rocky Point resident’s rates was also discussed. During this exchange several pertinent aspects were clarified on the topic of the payment of these rates. As a result, we would like to inform residents who have partially paid, or are yet to pay their rates bill, of these conditions. The first being; if rates are paid on, or before the due date, a discount is granted. Secondly, should this bill not be paid within this time frame a resident has 60 days from the due date to pay the said bill, be it partial or in full. Thirdly, if this bill, or any amount of this bill, is not paid by this nominated time an 11 per cent increase will be added daily to the amount owing until the said bill is paid in full. We would, at this point, sincerely like to thank all the residents of Weipa and Napranum who have supported this plight thus far. Paying only a percentage of your rates is your decision, and your decision alone as a resident of Weipa. Having said that, however, it would seem to us after attending this meeting, the Weipa Town Authority is now moving and making decisions in relation to this antiquated issue due to several people paying only half the amount of their current rates bill. Please know we are acting in good faith when spearheading this matter and are attempting to make the great community of Weipa a better, safer and healthier place to live and raise our children. Kym Prentice and Yvette Carter

ONE of the Weipa Bowls Club’s greens resembled a swimming pool last Friday afternoon as a water mains burst, quickly filling the well-manicured rink. Weipa Bowls Club secretary manager, Nick Prus, said he was extremely impressed with, and grateful to, Dave Kowalski and his crew from Port City Plumbing who quickly rectified the situation, allowing the club to continue to trade on a busy Friday evening.

Western Cape College high school students engaged with researchers and Traditional Owners during their Wathayn visit.
HIGH school students from the Western Cape College recently visited Wathayn traditional land to visit a joint research project that is under way. The Year 10 high school students were able to learn about how Western Cape York Aboriginal people have adapted to climate change over the past several thousand years, R i o Ti n t o A l c a n Weipa’s Community Relations team escorted the students out on Country where several university researchers and traditional owners were able to help increase the students’ understanding of how Aboriginal people have adapted to the changing environment of the Western Cape. Dr Justin Shiner, Rio
Tinto Technology and Innovation’s Cultural Heritage Principal adviser, said he was delighted to give students the opportunity to learn more about our local cultural heritage sites. “The students were fascinated to learn how our coastline has changed over time and were astounded to hear that our research has shown some shell mounds are as old as 2,500 years, Dr Shiner said. Western Cape College teacher, Rose Goodall believes the excursion out on Country was a fantastic opportunity for the students to see first-hand the rich history associated with the Western Cape. “The students really enjoyed the tour pro-
vided by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and were amazed to hear that some of the shell mounds found on Wathayn traditional lands are as old as the pyramids in Egypt, Ms Goodall said. “We look forward to hearing more about the environmental change and learnings from this year when the researchers visit again in 2013. R i o Ti n t o A l c a n Weipa is the industry partner in a three year Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant involving researchers from six universities – Macquarie University, Australian National University, the University of Auckland, Waikato University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of York.
The project will look at the past 6000 to 7000 years since the development of the estuaries around Weipa to see how the environment had changed. “The project will give us a much deeper understanding of the relationships between the physical and biological environment, and the people who lived here in the past, and constructed the mounds, Dr Shiner said. During the first two years of the ARC Linkage Grant, the researchers have scanned, photographed, logged and sampled about 50 shell mounds and performed other tests that indicated the environment around Wathayn has markedly changed over the past few thousand years.

New projects to support Cape York communities REMOTE Indigenous communities in Cape York will share in more than $540,000 from the Federal Government to upgrade community infrastructure and create local jobs. The Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin and Senator for Queensland, Jan McLucas said the projects responded directly the needs of residents in Aurukun and Coen. “We talked with local people about what they needed to grow their communities and create more opportunities for
residents, and we are responding directly to that feedback, Ms Macklin said. “People in Aurukun told us the local cemetery was reaching capacity and they needed a new one. They also said the local sporting oval had been damaged by extreme weather in the region and needed upgrading. “This new funding means the community can build a new cemetery and upgrade their sporting oval so they can hold rugby league and AFL games. “The community also said they wanted to acknowledge the contribution that people in Aurukun had made during times of war. A new war memorial will be built to allow locals to recognise the personal sacrifice of residents. Senator McLucas said the new projects would create jobs
for the region. “These projects will employ up to 15 local people over the building period, and three permanent positions at the Aurukun Shire Council will also be created to manage the ongoing maintenance of these sites, Senator McLucas said. “This will give residents new skills and qualifications, with opportunities for accredited training in horticulture, small engines, machinery operation and fencing. “We are also providing funding to the Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation to enage a local asset manager in Coen. The funding will be provided under the Indigenous Remote Service delivery Special Account.

Is your diet drink making you fat?
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
Oh yes it is! And If it’s not it is certainly not conducive to your health. The problem is many of us are brainwashed by the companies introducing us to a “healthier option. Please don’t be fooled that just because a diet drink is calorie-free it is free of consequences. If you suggest you only drink a diet soda because you want to watch your waist you may be fooled once again. A study following diet drinkers for over a period of 10 years showed that they increased their waist size more than 70 per cent compared to those which did not consume diet drinks. Your waist size is not only a matter of the way you look or if you can still wear your jeans comfortably, but also about the build-up in dangerous visceral fat which is associated with diabetes and heart diseases. Research suggests that even though your brain feels like it has been satisfied with the sweet taste of your drink, your body is not. When the brain experiences the sweet taste, your body will expect calories. This triggers you to start eating calorie-rich foods. With this confusion of satiety and craving your body may loose its ability to control the calorie intake and lead you to overeating at all times. After a quick check of locally available diet drinks, I found out that even though they are banned in many countries our Australian diet drinks still happily include the additive 951 – aspartame. The combination of aspartame and caffeine is a particular combination which acts as a toxin in your body that kills brain cells. Just before these brain cells die they create a spark in your brain which gives you a buzz, and can

leave you addicted to that particular substance combination. This is what manufacturers of these drinks build their success and their marketing strategies on. Have you really lost weight since you started drinking diet sodas? I don’t think so. And if for some reason you have, you have just shifted from one problem to another. Aspartame is closely linked to worsen or even trigger the following diseases: • Diabetes • Birth defects • Some forms of cancer • Multiple sclerosis • Epilepsy • Chronic fatigue syndrome • Parkinson’s disease • Alzheimer’s disease • Mental retardation • Fibromyalgia If, after reading all this, you still decide to drink your daily consumption of diet drinks, at least you are making an informed choice. If you are suffering or have overcome any of this diseases above or if you are pregnant, you should seriously consider laying off these drinks for good. I am not suggesting going back to normal sodas, however you could have a fresh juice with some soda water or add some mint or lemon to soda water. Drink tea with a natural sweetener such as stevia, or get your juicer out of the cupboard and create healthy, energy and mineral-rich sweet drinks that can help to support weight loss and health for real, leaving your mind and body satisfied. Your options and ideas are endless. A great source to learn more about this and other topics is the video and website www.hungryforachange.com

WHEN we read through many of the words that the Lord Jesus spoke, we can miss the deep meanings he is giving through those words unless we pause to actually study bit by bit what he is revealing to us. Those words he spoke in Mark Ch 13 vs 14 to the end of that chapter are good examples. (I am giving an overview that will hopefully give you some idea of the main thrust of the Lord’s words of prophecy). Woven into his talk to his disciples, in answer to what the disciples thought was a simple question, the Lord prophesied of troubles that the disciples and other Christians of that day would experience in the near future. And he then spoke of
the distant future, which most Christian scholars agree is the time we are now in, that will see the revealing of the Antichrist! So he is speaking through his words today to his Christian people about the future troubles that â€œâ€Ś will be far than worse than any the world has ever known from the very beginning when God created the world until the present time. Nor will there be anything like it again. But the Lord has reduced the number of those days; if he had not, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, he has reduced those days.â€? (Mark Ch 13 vs 19-20). Once again he warns of
false Messiahs and false prophets who perform miracles and wonders, who are so convincing in their acts that they could possibly fool even you and me, so we must stay in tune with the Holy Spirit and our proven local spiritual leaders. (v 21-22). The Lord warned his early disciples and other followers, and warns us today to be on our guard, because he has given us early warning. Are the Tele-evangelists you are watching really God’s people, or are they wallowing in lies and deceit and your dollars? Check ‘em out carefully, because a few of them may not be what they seem! The Lord be with you. Rev Michael Connolly.
NEWS / OPINION
From the Chairman Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman
THERE have been a number of issues and deputations both to, and by, the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) over the past month, well worth reporting in this edition. Firstly, at the general meeting last Friday, on behalf of the residents of Rocky Point, Yvette Carter and Kym Prentice presented a petition to the WTA with over 1000 signatures; seeking a resolution to the kerb and channel issue in Rocky Point. A full report is being prepared by the WTA to provide the community with feedback on the issue. The report will be tabled at the next meeting on Friday, October 19, but in the interim I am hopeful that there will be some good news on RTA capital funding for WTA projects, of which the kerb and channelling for Rocky Point has been classified as ‘critical’. WTA still awaits a response
from the Queensland Minister for Fisheries, John McVeigh, on the serious issue of unsustainable and largely mismanaged fish trawling in the Gulf of Carpentaria. However, following a recent meeting with the WTA, Senator Jan McLucas has written to the Federal Minister Tony Burke outlining both her and the WTA’s concerns. The Federal Minister has the power to withdraw Australian Government approvals under the EPBC Act. Elected member Brooke Barton has put together a very strong Animal Management Working Group from the community with Gary Freier, Jake Gigliotti, Tracey or Matt Small, Tracey Sekac and Tonia May. Brooke will be chairing the first meeting in the next few weeks, with the aim of a Draft Animal Management Plan being available for public consultation in the coming months.
North Queensland Bulk Ports have provided the WTA with a plan of the proposed new recreational boating infrastructure at Evans Landing. This new facility is set to replace the aging infrastructure adjacent to the fuel wharf with this current co-location now considered a significant safety risk.
Access across a narrow strip of waterfront land due to be handed back to local Indigenous interests is the only remaining stumbling block. The WTA has met with local Police in relation to the evolving issues in and around the Woolworths precinct, such as alcohol consumption, public nuisance, littering and ‘sleeping rough’. The Police have initiated a multi-tiered approach and
will be assisted by the WTA and neighbouring Councils to address the issues. In the meantime I would encourage anybody witnessing unacceptable behaviour to immediately report the matter to Police. The WTA has endorsed the final report for the Andoom Oval Master Plan, as well as the formation of a management board of identified stakeholders. The plan will be available on the WTA web site, and now has a final cost estimate for redevelopment of around $2.6 million. Finally, the WTA met with the Deputy Premier here in Weipa earlier this month and we were heartened by his approach to the Weipa Governance issue, when he said “there’s a real need to sort out this Weipa governance issue once and for all; it’s been going on far too long – I’ll talk to the Minister (Crisafulli) and get a move along”. This ‘journey of discovery’ recommences for the first time this year when the Working Group (WTA, RTA and State) meets in Brisbane in midOctober with the full support of the Local Government Minister.

All smiles at the end of Work Start week one
PARTICIPANTS in the Indigenous PathWays Solutions (IPS) Work Start Program have now completed week one. This week they have found new friends and settled in very well together and a strong bond has formed in the team already. The team have had visits from Frank Fell and Steve Butler from Rio Tinto Alcan and participated in a question and answer session which covered how committed the
prospective employees need to be in order to face the challenges ahead. The team has made great progress by implementing safety initiatives in the training location and by putting their own personal safety plan into action. Over the next seven weeks the participants will work through Certificate I in Work Readiness and Certificate II in Workplace Practices through Training Connections Australia.
Meet the IPS Work Start Team INA BILLY I have lived in Napranum all my life and I want to be a good role model for my community people, working in RTA as a Mine Operator. My main goal is to be reliable, focused and confident so that I can get a full-time job at RTA to provide financial security for my family.

Team Rum Pigs (Dylan Defaueri, Chris Moore, Kerrod Gilmore) recorded the biggest tusks in the 2012 Weipa Pig Hunt at 85mm.

Bowhunters go the whole hog
Guess the weight competition: Shirley the pig weighed in at 161kg.

Weipa kids getting in on the fun at the annual Weipa Pig Hunt on Saturday.
Bowhunters Rod Wilson and Luke Dickson (Team Heli-M) had an early start on Saturday morning, driving from 3am to the spot they found these pigs. Using a Matthews Heli-M bow with Black Stump Broadheads shot from 20 metres the well-placed arrow netted the team the biggest bow shot pig award (71.1kg). Rod carried the team’s winning sow and boar over 1km to a position able to be accessed by vehicle to take the pigs to the Weipa Pig Hunt weigh-in.
Rhiannon and Carolyn recorded the results as the pigs were weighed-in.
The Tonners tale STEVE Rehn, Jake May and Ty Beckwith aka Team Tonners bolted out of the starting blocks on Friday afternoon, nailing four sows with bailing dog Wally and a 30.30 and .45 guns. Camping out in the boondocks in glorious conditions the team saw plenty of pigs after nightfall, however the dogs were not very interested. Birds chirping pre-dawn heralded the start to Saturday’s hunt and despite a few aches and pains from the previous day’s 10km slog the team were ready to roll. Daylight improved the team’s spirits and pig hunting success and their four dogs caught every pig they got near. Wally found and bailed an 84kg pig which was shot by Ty, who also shot the

team’s biggest of six boars and six sows, weighing 88kg. The team dragged and wheelbarrowed their five best boars out to Jake’s Landcruiser and back to the boat with the catch. The work punt was piled with two team’s kills, after Rowan’s Rascals also enjoyed a top hunt in the same area, but were unable to fit their load into their tiny tinny. “What a hoot we had in the annual pig hunt,” Steve said. “Full credit to the select few locals that organise the Weipa Pig Hunt,” Steve said after the event. “They are champion locals, selflessly working to raise money for local charities, and put on a special weekend of entertainment for us all.”
Ty Beckwith (from Kangaroo Island) with one of The Tonners biggest pigs.
Jakes Cruiser took a hammering in the bush taking the pigs to the boat.
The punt was loaded to the gunwhales with the spoils of two teams hunts.

SPORT
Sportsfishers enjoy exciting competition A VERY exciting competition weekend was had by members of the Weipa Sportsfishing Club, with many weighing in a fish or two. Rod took out the men’s competition and Michelle won the ladies with a very nice Queenie. The lucky lures were won by Fiona and Nick. Once again, no target species were weighed-in, with only one or two small Mackeral released. Darryl and Simon had success in raising a Sailfish (when Simon wasn’t sleeping), with Darryl also weighing in a 200-point Queenfish. Mike and Glenda had
somewhat of an adventurest trip, with Glenda jumping overboard to save her favourite rod and reel combo. Unfortunately it was to be “the one that got away and she watched it disappear to the bottom of the ocean. We won’t mention that Mike and Glenda’s new boat has eight new rod holders! Next month’s competition will be held on October 13 and 14, and the barbecue location will be e-mailed to members closer to the date. Our target species will be Tarpon for double points if anyone is lucky enough to catch one. – Catch ya, Elisa
Lewis releasing his first Sailfish.
Early tee-off times this weekend WITH the annual Weipa Pig Hunt at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Saturday no competition was held. Sunday’s event was a 4BBB Stableford and the winners, with
45 points were Jo Constantine and Kerry Scales, from Jenny and Vesa Hyytinen with 44 points. This weekend a Single Stableford, sponsored by NQCEC will be held on Satur-
day. The tee-off time is 9am due to the AFL grand final telecast. On Sunday a Single Stroke sponsored by Jenny, Vesa and Justin Hyytinen. Tee-off time is an hour earlier at 11.30am to ensure we
get back in and home in time for the NRL grand final. Reminder the AGM is on Sunday, October 7 and all full members are encouraged to attend. – Wendy Grainger Club Captain

THE jerseys worn by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys against the Brisbane Broncos and Manly Sea Eagles in the 2012 NRL finals series are up for grabs in a special online charity auction this week. Each Cowboys team m e m b e r, i n c l u d i n g t w o time Dally M Medal winner Johnathan Thurston, games record holder Matthew Bowen and reigning International Prop of the Year Matthew Scott, have signed the jerseys they wore in the victory against the Broncos at Dairy Farmers Stadium and the controversial loss to Manly at Allianz Stadium. North Queensland wore their blue home strip in the first game and the white away jersey in the second.
Bidding in the online auction will start at noon on Monday with all money raised going to the important work performed by BUSHKids and the Cowboys Community Fund. BUSHkids is a non-Government, community organisation which offers a range of free allied health services to children and families living in rural Queensland, while the Cowboys Community Fund, supported by Coca-Cola Amatil, fosters community support and spirit in North Queensland. Since its establishment in 2005, the Community Fund has granted in excess of $100,000 in funding to North Queensland applicants.

After 26 gruelling rounds and three weeks of spectacular footy in the finals series it has come down to the big day on Sunday, when the Melbourne Storm take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in the 2012 NRL grand final. What a great day this will be, and I honestly think both teams have been outstanding all year and really deserve their place in the decider. The mighty Storm were just too classy for the Sea Eagles last weekend while the Bulldogs simply overpowered the Bunnies to progress through to the big game. This Sunday the NRL grand final decider should be a thriller, with
several players in great form, and I’m sure the fans won’t go home disappointed. There are some scintillating match ups this week: Billy Slater versus Ben Barba, Will Chambers versus Josh Morris, Josh Reynolds versus Cooper Cronk, Sika Manu versus Frank Pritchard, and let’s not forget the coaches Craig Bellamy versus Des Hasler. I have identified one player from each team that I think will swing the game in their balance. Spilla’s player watch Melbourne Storm: Billy Slater Games 20 Tries 15 Try assists 22 Line breaks 21
Tackle breaks 100 Average metres per game 138.8 Canterbury Bulldogs: Ben Barba Games 26 Tries 22 Try assists 23 Line breaks 25 Tackle breaks 168 Average metres per game 121.8 My tip is Melbourne Storm, as I honestly think they are just too well-balanced, and Billy Slater will be on fire to put in yet another man of the match performance. Yours in league Spilla
So I was quietly disappointed at the efforts of The Princess last week, who took it upon herself to fill in this column in the absence of any inspiration and action from yours truly. Such unsolicited action does not set a good precedent for future reference when she seeks out permission for this and that. Anyway, you’d think that I was moping around the house, whinging about the footy and the lack of hair follicles on my cranium all day every day by the way she went on. Truth be known I don’t mind the fact that the Cats got knocked out early, nor the fact that I get a good reflection off the top of my scone when the sun hits a certain angle, nor the fact that we’ll all be sitting on the edge of our seats waiting in anticipation for the leather to hit willow sooner than we can say “Who finished third this year?” or “How many votes did Scott Thompson win the Brownlow by?” It’s all cyclic in the end, and I’m already looking forward to the pre-season comp at the start of 2013. Actually she didn’t do that bad of a job of it, and she is right when she says I’ve dropped the bundle a bit. I can’t seem to get any inspiration for the footy anymore, and I’m even considering missing the GF to go camping this weekend.
I think I must be coming down with something to be honest; missing the GF is unheard of in my house. The Bald Eagle isn’t missing the GF as he’s off to the game on my ticket. That is unless he relents and gives it up to a mate who barracks for the Hawks. I’m not sure what I’d do in that situation, a true test of character there. I was down in Cairns on Friday night to see the Swans get up over the Pies and give us all some hope that Buckley and the rest of the rabble will be subjected to a bit of heartache for a few more years. It sounds mean, but when I was brought up with stories from my Gran about how she posted a dead magpie to a friend one year after the Cats knocked the Pies out, what hope do I have? The Swans did look the goods too and with a few key players finding from, you never know on the big day. The Hawks were very good under pressure against the Crows. As good as they were, the boys from the City of Churches just couldn’t quite get over the line and the class and cool heads showed in the end. It reminded me a bit of the 2007 Prelim when the Cats beat the Pies by five to scrape through. We all know what happened the week after to Port Adelaide.
Let’s hope this one isn’t a blow out like that, as the day will be short on entertainment if it is. I do think the Hawks have been the best team overall this season and deserve to win. Having said that, I can’t stand the blighters. Watching them gives me the sort of uncomfortable feeling you get when you stick a cotton wool bud too far into your ear and it makes you cough. Needless to say I will be barracking for the Swans on the day. It’s not even the players today that I don’t like, it’s just the club and everything it stands for really. A legacy of those days through the 80s and 90s I guess. Tonight the Brownlow is on and if I can convince Management to go to bed early I might be a sneaky chance to watch a bit. Haven’t seen a Brownlow night in a few years so it would be good and its anyone’s award this year. Be good to see someone new pick it up, an unexpected outsider perhaps. I reckon Scott Thompson should be in for a shot. Anyway, all for this week, happy barracking and chat for the last time next week. Cheers Maca

from page 20 Shore-based anglers are getting amongst the fish as well with Phil from Weipa Furniture and Electrical getting half a dozen Barra with the best at a cracking 1.2 metres, and these were all lure caught. Chris Allwood and I put a few live baits out but only found the kindergarten fish. Evans Landing is still producing Queenfish, Bream and Trevally and there have been some good Grunter for the punters. Bernie from Video 2000 caught a lovely rock off the wharf and said “it’s a start. It will be a fish next time”. Rocky Point has had a few Barra working the broken reef, with both soft plastics and hard bodies snaring a few. Rui from the shop got a nice Barra at the Mission River bridge and it came in at 85cm.

Chris from Tackle World has been trialing a new soft plastic called a Live Shrimp from Ecooda, and has been really impressed with them. His first fish was a Barra at 87.55cm, and finished the day with a dozen more on it. The shop will have stock shortly and I will let you know when it arrives via this column. The water is starting to warm up and the fish are moving about, so you would expect to see more captures of Salmon and Grunter in the next few weeks. I also heard that a customer nailed a bag limit of Mud Crabs but unfortunately he wouldn’t tell me where he got them. All in all it is looking good to wet a line as long as the weather stays calm. ‘Til next week, fair breezes and tight lines.

THIS week the Gods smiled upon me and I was able to go and chase a Billfish with Notso, and it turned out to be a day to remember. I landed my first Sailfish by 8.15am and by 8.45am I got the chance to tease up a Sail for Notso. With both fish tagged we continued to work the area for a couple more hours for a Spaniard on a skipping gar.

We headed out wider and we came across the biggest school of Bludger Trevally I have ever seen, and we threw hookless lures to them and got some great photos. I put on a Sebile 155 stik shad and hooked up on a huge GT that come out of the school of Bludgers. The day was getting on, so we headed back to where the morning’s action took place,
and on the way there we got good Black Marlin up which readily took a live bait. After about 40 minutes Notso finally traced the fish and was in the process of tagging it when the trace parted company from the hook. We worked the area for a bit but we had to get back for the bait rigging night so we called it a day. And what a day it was, good fish, good company...what
more could a man want! There have been plenty of Mackerel in the 10kg range to be caught on the inshore reefs so it’s not necessary to go wide. Reports of good Tuskies, Trout and Fingermark are also coming in for the bottom bashers on most reefs, with the better fish coming in off the northern marks. UU continued page 19
