Double-up on fresh produce Woolworths introduce second weekly delivery

Woolworths Weipa store manager Jenny Everist, pictured with staff members Grace Sisson and Thanawan Bohute, is excited to announce a second weekly barge delivery to the town.

FROM Friday, October 12, 2012 Woolworths Weipa will be receiving extra deliveries of fresh fruit, vegetables and groceries. Up until now the delivery of food for Woolies has arrived on a barge on Monday morning and is usually on the shelves, ready for customers by that afternoon. Store manager Jenny Everist said she was aware that many local residents wanted to see more fresh food on the shelves, however enabling more deliveries to Weipa

has been a challenging process. “I am passionate about fresh food also, and this has been a plan myself, my predecessor, and the whole Woolies team up here have been working on for some time, Ms Everist said. As any Weipa resident knows there are often obstacles faced when bringing supplies to the area. “For us at Wooworths, the most reliable way to bring in deliveries is by barge, Ms Everist said. Fresh food deliveries set to double UU from page 1 “However, while barges arrive regularly in Weipa, only a very few are suitable for Woolworths’ loads so our options to increase deliveries has been limited, From Friday, October 12, 2012 Woolworths Weipa will be receiving extra deliveries of fresh fruit, vegetables and groceries by utilising a barge that docks on Friday mornings, for display that afternoon. “This will give our customers access to fresher produce at the busiest time of the week, Ms Everist said. “We’ve managed to do this in close consultation with the logistics company who have guaranteed that the Woolies food will come off the barge first so we can get it to stores, and to you, as quickly as possible.

WHY is it we Aussies always seem to get left behind? When there is a sparkling new idea out there, you can bet your boots it’s not ours and, whatever it is, you can’t buy it here. Perhaps in a decade or two, but not now... Not anymore, and for that we have to thank those imaginative folks at the Shire. It all started - if you can believe it - two years ago in far away Austria, in the hills near Salzburg. the edelweiss singing at the tops of their voices? They also inspired Christian Eder, a local hotelier, to capitalise on the local custom of yodelling. Now, yodelling has nothing to do with eggs or schnitzel or apple strudel. It is the gymnastic singing technique that Tyrolean shepherds used to use when their mobile phone coverage was like ours but they needed to communicate with Fritz and his flock on a neighbouring hilltop. It’s rather like our ‘Coo-ee!’, with enough additions to tell a story. Herr Eder and the local Shire con-

structed a Yodelling Trail, fully equipped to handle the needs of singing tourists. There are stops at scenic spots along the trail where sheet music is displayed on notice boards and weather-proof karaoke machines help you sing along as you enjoy the view. Cook Shire has jumped on the idea and are planning yodelling stops all the way up Grassy Hill. Although the idea is simple enough, implementation to exacting Shire standards is more difficult. As the average Aussie can’t be trusted to get past coo-ee and our Shire folk lack the necessary joie de vivre to help out, we will have to employ a suitable singing guide. The guide will need to hold a Yellow Card showing he or she will not sing too loud for the local insects, and a White Card for Hearing Aid Operation, and a Blue Card for Traffic Control. Once he (or she) has got those, he will be dispatched to train with the Vienna Boy’s Choir, including summer field work in the Tyrol. With a bit of luck, he should be ready to start at the end of the next tourist season.

While it’s a step in the right direction, Ms Everist said the solution is however, not ideal. “We would far prefer a midweek delivery that would allow our customers to have access to fresher produce in the latter part of the week as well. “That remains our aim and if a suitable barge starts a service which arrives on a Wednesday, or even a Thursday, we would look very closely at that delivery time, she said. “For the time being, however, we hope this additional delivery will give Weipa residents a far better shopping experience with Woolworths, with great tasting fresh produce available at more times throughout the week. Ms Everist invited anyone with questions to come into the Woolworths Weipa supermarket and speak to herself or one of her team.

YOUR AIR CHARTER SOLUTION:

Cape York people demand action at two-day forum AROUND 100 people converged on the Laura Rodeo Grounds last Friday and Saturday to speak their minds about critical land management issues on Cape York at an open forum hosted by Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF). The large crowd pushed for action from political leaders, and demanded inclusion in the decision-making process which has been denied to them up until this point. The three main issues raised by community leaders at the forum were: protecting unmanaged landscape; the Cape York Regional Plan; and World Heritage Listing of Cape York. “Listen, Engage and Empower is our mantra at the moment with all Government bodies, said Cape York Sustainable Futures, CEO, Trish Butler. “Engage and listen to the community before announcing any new major initiatives, including the Bioregional Management Plan. “There is great mistrust with State Government bureaucrats running consultation on the Cape from recent experiences in Wild Rivers and World Heritage. The community feels told not heard. “The bioregional planning must await an open consultation program run by the community, for the community, before any consultation about a specific program or initiative. Talk to the community before announcing bioregional planning, listen, then respond. “This is the message that was drummed home to elected representatives over the weekend, said Mrs Butler. The economic lobby group also demanded integrity be the central theme of all decisions going forward for Government. “CYSF’s position is that prior to engaging the community, their boundaries, their

values and the integrity of these values, need to be clearly mapped and identified for community engagement. “No land should be included in the World Heritage area nomination without landholder (both Indigenous and nonIndigenous - including Native Title, Traditional Owners and Leaseholders) knowledge and consent, Mrs Butler said. “We believe that no matter what ALL of the people of Cape York should be engaged in a ground up community ownership approach even if there are only small parts of Cape York identified in any potential nomination. The Hon. Tracy Davis MP, State Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Member for Cook, David Kempton MP flew in for the forum to tackle the issues with the people of Cape York headon. “I commend Mr Kempton and Ms Davis for taking the time to come and hear from the people first-hand - their predecessors didn’t show us the same courtesy., Mrs butler said. “But while I commend them for fronting the people and listening to our concerns I would like to see words turned into action, as the people of Cape York need a clear direction and inclusion in the decision making processes of their land as a matter of urgency, she said. A workshop was facilitated by Annalise Jennings from Dynamic Exchange entitled “Building Our Future Together which assisted the community to draw up their vision and purpose for the future. The two days of events also marked CYSF (est.1987) 25th anniversary and a celebratory dinner was held on the Saturday evening to pay tribute to the people who established the

Previous presidents Bob Sullivan and Bill Raymond spoke about the earlier years along with Mary Shepard, whilst current president John McDowall presented two members with life membership for their dedicated contribution to the organisation. Trish Butler CEO of CYSF announced the newly estabTHE two-day forum played host to the CYSF Annual General Meeting and a number of key motions were passed at the meeting. Motions Passed at CYSF AGM on Saturday, September 8, 2012: 1. “That the World Heritage listing process be brought back under the Queensland Cape York Statutory Plan immediately to enable community ownership of the process. 2. “That all consultation in respect of World Heritage Listing be ceased immediately and brought under the Cape York regional plan. 3. “That the two committees under the Cape York Heritage Act be fully representative of Cape York people or disbanded immediately.

lished Cape York Local Tourism Organisation’s interim board. “The Local Tourism Organisation was recently formed following a partnership forged with Cook Shire Council and an agreement where their current tourism and marketing officer will be working for LTO for four days each week, said Mrs Butler. Mrs Butler also toasted to the next 25 years and declared the two day forum a successful community meeting. 4. “That any consultation be driven by Cape York communities and not by external agencies. 5. “That CYSF write to UNESCO and point out that the Australian Government is not providing necessary information to make an informed decision by the people of Cape York. A further motion was floated: “That the bioregional process cease immediately until the CY statutory plan has been completed. However Queensland State Government representatives advised that this was already underway and the motion was withdrawn. “CYSF will follow this situation closely to ensure that is the case and advise members accordingly, said Mrs Butler.

Ceramic mural to tell community’s story

NAPRANUM artists have begun planning and designing a ceramic art mural which will be a visual representation of their community and its heritage. The project began as a public artworks project, initiated by the Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreements (WCRPA), Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) and TAFE to install Indigenous ceramic arts murals in public places, with a view to not only beautify the area but also educate the public on Indigenous culture. The Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC) had secured funding for the project, through an Arts Queensland grant (Indigenous Regional Arts Development Funds) and will see a number of artistics working together to produce a ceramic mural for the NASC boardroom. Renowned ceramicist Naomi Sharp who will oversee the creation of the mural, was in Napranum recently where she worked with several artists preparing preliminary sketches for the mural. Co-ordinator of the Hermannsburg Potters in the Northern Territory for 15 years, and responsible for many large public ceramic murals in both Australia and the United States,

Visual representation: Ceramicist Naomi Sharp oversees the Napranum community artist’s concept drawings.

Ms Sharp said her role was that of a technician, directing the Napranum artists in their creation. “NASC mayor, Philemon Mene, asked me to help the artists express what they feel about the community and what they saw as its future she said. “I’ve spent my time here gathering the artists’ stories and helping them design what the mural is going to look like. “My role is to help excecute the making of the mural and I will be guiding the artists to make their individual ideas blend and flow into a work of art, Ms Sharp said. “It’s their stories, and they are running the show. I am simply liaising

and assisting. After a week in the Napranum community gathering stories and formulating a basic design, Ms Sharp will return in early 2013 for two weeks to create the mural, which will then be dried out before firing and mounting in the NASC boardroom. Weipa TAFE arts teacher Vide Smith is also involved in the project, training the up and coming artists in painting and ceramics prior to the actual creation of the mural, and Karen Savage, Western Coordinator, Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) have been the project managers, supporting their young participants who are arts

trainees and practitioners. WCRPA co-ordinator, Liz Logan, said it was also hoped the project may lead to a small arts business for community members. “The WCRPA has conceptualised and driven the project as an ideal activity that gives young people the discipline to be ready for work, and possibly for their own small arts business as well as bringing local Indigenous talent and culture to the public’s notice, Ms Logan said. “Ideally, these young artists could in the future be commissioned by local companies and councils to produce public art.

Feedback sought on green tape reduction THE Queensland Government is seeking public feedback on options to further reduce green tape for business, saving companies millions of dollars a year. The proposed changes will cut green tape for motor vehicle workshops, boilermakers,

small-scale manufacturers and metal works as well as removing some regulations for the agriculture sector such as pig keeping and waste transportation. The Member for Cook, David Kempton, encouraged small business owners who may benefit from changes to

regulation around Environmentally Relevant Activities (ERAs) to make a submission. “The proposed changes include deleting some low risk environmentally relevant activities that could benefit close to 10,000 businesses operating with environmental

licenses, Mr Kempton said. “There is the potential to provide savings of up to $6.77 million to businesses, in annual fees alone. “None of these options will hurt the environment as everyone still has to meet the requirements of the

Environmental Protection Act. Business and the public can comment on proposed amendments to the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008 and find out more information about green tape reduction by visiting: www.ehp. qld.gov.au/management/ greentape/index.html

BE CROC WISE!

Heli-hunters high on the hog KEEPING feral pigs under control in the Cape is a big job, and the boys from Cape York Weeds and Feral Animals Program ( C Y WA FA P ) t a k e to the skies for four months a year to keep on top of the problem. Using two R22 helicopters, equipped with experienced pilots and shooters, the crew conduct an aerial shooting program, supported by the Cook Shire Council and funded independently through State and Federal Government grants and contract work. The annual shoot coincides with the turtle breeding season as feral pigs on Cape York Peninsula have a huge impact on marine turtles, with studies indicating the pigs may be responsible for declining turtle numbers due to their extensive predation on turtle nesting sites. Flying in two threehour shifts per day, one in the morning and one

in the afternoon, the crew can cull around 200 feral pigs in one shift. “Since the commencement of the program in 1999 we have culled over 30,000 pigs just on the western coast of Cape York in aerial shoots,” CYWAFAP’s Caleb Zaicz said when

The Western Cape Bulletin caught up with the crew during their annual aerial shoot on the Mapoon DOGIT. James said the number of feral pigs the team had seen this year was less than in previous years. “It appears the numbers of feral pigs is declining which is a

good thing,” Caleb said. “It has been noted that the pigs coming down onto the beach to destroy turtle nests and eggs is a learned behaviour, so if you can take out the older generations of pigs you have a period of 12 months to two years where there is considerably less predation.”

Chamber asks government to involve Cape people more IN their recent submission to the Cape York Bioregional Management Plan, the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce asked government to consider involving the people on the Cape to a much greater extent in their environmental protection and business development regimes. being ‘extremely poorly executed’ and that the community had been ‘alienated’ by a process that had ignored their opinions. The report suggested that ‘Government needs to rethink its policies, restructure its uncoordinated, unwieldy and outcome poor systems and allow the CYP community to be proactive in determining the future of their part of Australia that is as large as Victoria.’

A recommendation by Cape York Sustainable Futures to establish a Task Force of Cape York representatives to start the bioregional planning process was fully supported and it was hoped that one of more representatives of the Weipa area could be included. Problems with the complexity of land tenure status on the Cape was another key consideration that was discussed.

The Chamber supports an initiative by the new LNP government to simplify land ownership which would include reforming the current Wild Rivers legislation. The move to establish a local tourism organisation to represent the Cape’s vibrant tourist industry was another initiative that the Chamber has been pursuing for many years. The submission also points out that Weipa is

perfectly situated to be the hub for the administration of the new plan, an excellent alternative to the current situation where most of the Cape’s management programs are run out of Brisbane and Canberra. ‘Giving the CYP people the opportunity to take a positive proactive stance, then actioning their outcomes, is the best pathway to restore confidence in government.’

LETTER / NEWS Letter to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

Praise for WCC students WE would like to commend highly the Year 7 pupils and teachers of Western Cape College on their recent excursion to Moreton Telegraph Station. They were a pleasure to have as guests. The children showed respect for their teachers and also the staff at Moreton, and were polite and considerate. The myriad of activities provided by the teachers kept the children educated and occupied, but most of all the whole team ap-

peared to be having lots of fun. They were completely self-contained, extremely well behaved and even though there was a fair number of them, they were absolutely no bother at all to fellow campers. The whole attitude of, and rapport between, teachers and pupils were a credit to themselves and their school and we at Moreton would be privileged to have them back at any time. The management and staff at Moreton Telegraph Station, Wenlock River

Flying Doctor receives aviation honour

IN a ceremony in Wagga Wagga last month The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was inducted into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame as the first recipient of the “Southern Cross Award.â€? According to the event program the award was made, â€œâ€Śto honour an organisation which has made an outstanding contribution to aviation.â€? Greg Rochford, national

chief executive officer welcomed the award. “On behalf of the whole RFDS organisation and all its staff, past and present, I’d like to thank the Hall of Fame for adding our name to the pantheon of Australian aviation. “The outstanding achievements of the early RFDS aviation pioneers made health care to the bush possible at a time when there were very few health options available.

“It is wonderful to have this recognition from the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame and will be an inspiration to the RFDS staff of today. “The induction comes at an auspicious time as the RFDS will celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2013. The RFDS was founded by the Reverend John Flynn, a Presbyterian pastor and superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission who himself is celebrating a landmark this year. 2012 marks a century since he joined the Inland Mission. According to his writings, the medical service he envisaged was to be a framework within which outback communities might “structure and co-ordinate their own “canopy of safety. This initially consisted of outback hospitals and nursing hostels, but his vision of providing a caring service to remote homesteads and communities was only completed with the establishment of what was to become the RFDS in 1928 and the development of the pedal radio in 1929. It was to be

the world’s first flying doctor service. The Service’s first flight, on 17 May 1928, was made using a De Havilland model DH50 aircraft hired from the fledgling Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service, later to become Qantas. The aircraft, appropriately named “Victory, was a single engine, fabric covered, cabin bi-plane capable of carrying a pilot and four passengers at a cruising speed of just under 80 miles per hour. “Today, almost 85 years later the Flying Doctor is not just an emergency service, but a fully-fledged primary healthcare provider with 61 aircraft operating out of 21 bases nationally. “We help over 276,000 people each year, which is one every two minutes, said Mr Rochford. “The motto of the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame is “to honour the past and inspire the future. I hope the Flying Doctor will continue to aspire to that during its next 85 years.

Officers praised for life-saving actions A 29-year-old Weipa man was safely taken into custody following a disturbance in Napranum on Sunday evening in which officers were threatened. Around 8.30pm on September 23, police were called following reports of a man making threats while armed with a petrol container. Officers from Weipa and Cairns Tactical Crime Squad negotiated with the man for a considerable period and

after encouraging him into a safe area, a fire extinguisher was discharged and he was safely restrained. No one was physically injured during the incident and the man was referred for specialist medical treatment. Weipa Police Station Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins praised his officers for their brave and professional actions which resulted in the safe resolution of this incident.

“The potential for this incident to have gone horribly wrong was very real. The officers involved are to be commended for both their compassion for the man and clever and effective use of available resources, Senior Sergeant Jenkins said. “They not only ensured the man’s well being but also the safety of the surrounding community through their actions.

Australians sign to save Steve’s Place OVER 400,000 Australians and wildlife warriors from around the world have signed a petition to save the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, which is currently under threat of strip mining. Terri Irwin was thrilled with result and hopes that momentum of the Save Steve’s Place campaign will continue. “I am so proud of the response we have had to save the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. We can protect this fragile environment while still enabling research, filming projects, and opportunities for Indigenous Australians. The 335,000 acre reserve, in Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, is home to a set of at least eight important spring-fed wetlands which provide a critical water source to threatened habitat, provide permanent water to the Wenlock River, and a home for rare, vulnerable and previously un-described

plants and wildlife. The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve remains host to the most comprehensive crocodile research in the world. Management of the reserve has also involved research with scientists from twelve countries; studies of flora, fauna, anthropology, paleontology, weather, hydrology, fire management, pest control, and aboriginal culture. “We have also worked with Traditional Owners to develop employment opportunities such as cosmetic and pharmaceutical uses for different plant species, research and ranger work, education opportunities, and elders on country. “We also support the Queensland Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers Program, said Terri. There are also significant tourism and filming opportunities for the Cape region. “Since signing with FremantleMedia Enterprises, we have had regular filming

Wanting to feel this happy and carefree may be one of the reasons why you like to have a few drinks and let your hair down once in a while. When was the last time you felt happy, energetic, alert and relaxed all at once? Does this sound like a fairy tale to you? You are not alone, and we like to spend millions of dollars to enjoy a regular “pick me upâ€? in an effort to get closer to that high. To give you some figures, in his book Natural Highs Patrick Holford informs us that: “In an average week in Britain people • Drink 145 million cups of coffees, 250 million sugared or caffeinated drinks • Drink 120 million alcoholic drinks smoke 1.5 billion cigarettes • Consume 6 million kgs of sugar and 2 million kg of chocolate • Pop 20 million antidepressants and 10 million tranquilisers • Smoke around 10 million joints and pop about 1 million tablets of ecstasy.â€? This is one week! Since the English are not alien to us, we could assume that we’re are not far behind. Not necessarily in numbers, but in the percentage of people consuming legal and illegal substances that pick us up when we’re feeling less than exceptional. These substances work for a very short and deceiving time, and leave us afterwards with another low which we try to fill again and again. Mood swings, fatigue, exhaustion and even addiction are the results of this up and down using of these substances. There are many alternative ways to alter the way you think or feel about yourself and the world. It is a combination of diet, relationships and lifestyle

to learn how to stay naturally high. In her book Potato’s not Prozac Dr Kathleen DesMaisons suggests you even out the sugar levels to maintain stable Serotonin levels (feel good hormones). She also suggest always having protein with any form of carbohydrates and eat a recommended portion of potato before heading to bed at night. Not only will the potato just before bed help you to feel happier, relaxed and balance out your mood, but there are other foods and lifestyle suggestions that can make you more vibrant all around. • Eat a diet high in nutrients. Unlimited fresh fruit and veggies combined with a healthy protein source such as legumes, lean meats, eggs fish and yogurts; • Limit or eliminate alcohol and caffeine consumption - it is a depressant; • Balance out your sugar levels avoiding all refined sugars and processed foods such as white bread, pasta, baked goods and replace them with beans and wholegrain products; • Make sure you top up with B Vitamins found in organic eggs, fish and lean meats; • Eat turkey at night as it stimulates the production of Tryptophan which is a precursor of Serotonin; • Eat sardines and other fish which are high in Omega 3 fatty acids such as Mackerel and Salmon. Other great sources of Omega 3s are nuts and seeds; • Exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes a day – either a walk or a group fitness class; • Sleep approximately seven to eight hours each night; • Try meditation or a yoga class to balance out your body and mind; • Socialise with positive, healthy people this will support your own mental wellbeing. Following these simple tips may not make you as carefree as your children but it may bring you a bit closer to that natural high we all like to experience.

THE Lord has woven the near future and the distant future (which we are in today) when prophesying about the awful horrors that was to come upon the world. In Mark Ch 13 vs 24-27 the Lord says that after the modern day “Awful Horror, the Antichrist, is finished bringing terrible devastation upon the world, there will be frightening things happening in the heavens. These events will happen just before the

Lord returns to gather his people. By the way, the disciples are not standing there gawking at the Lord as he describes the coming events in such language, because that type of talk is well known by them. Such language is spoken of in the same way in the Old Testament, their Hebrew Scriptures, that Jewish people including the disciples know so well, even today. It’s called ‘apocalyptic’ language and there are other books, such as

Daniel (OT) and Revelation (NT) that write in this style. As a matter of fact, Mark Ch 13 is described as the “little Revelation. There is nothing ‘old’ about the everfresh impact of the Old Testament, and many Bible scholars believe that to fully understand end-time studies, the Old Testament should be studied first. So what do we do during these times? The Lord loves you. Rev Michael Connolly

Past participant provides valuable insight

Past participant Tui Namoa provides valuable insight into working with Rio Tinto Alcan.

THE 2012 Indigenous PathWays Solutions Work Start Program group of participants got a great opportunity to discuss what working life is like at Rio Tinto Alcan this week. Tui Namoa was a participant of the IPS programme one year ago and was successful in gaining a traineeship.

Tui gave a valuable insight into what it is really like working in the mine. His enthusiasm had a powerful effect on the group and they were delighted to have time with someone they could connect with. Tui gave the group encouragement saying “work hard and you will do well”.

Meet the IPS Work Start Team RONALD CLERMONT I am 21 years of age and I have lived in Napranum all my life. I was born in Cairns and I finished my schooling at Western Cape College. I enjoy hunting and fishing, playing touch footy and hanging out with my friends and family. My goals are getting into Rio Tinto Alcan as a full-time employee so I can be a good role model in my community and for my family.

By Giembra Busmer

MAPOON Junior Land & Sea Rangers got some handson experience at Janie Creek Turtle Camp recently when they participated in a Future Leaders Eco Challenge. As part of the the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) Reef Guardian program the nine Year 5 and 6 Mapoon State School students spent the day enjoying activities with GBRMPA’s Cape York liaison officer Karlina See Kee, Heidi Taylor from Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society, Earth Smart Science Program’s John Harrigan, and local Land & Sea Rangers. The theme of the 2012 Future Leaders Eco Challenge was “The Inshore Great Barrier Reef – Bursting with Biodiversity” and students engaged in a range of activities designed to raise awareness of their local ecosystems, what damage was being caused to them and how to rehabilitate these areas. The students started their day with a 100 metre beach clean-up and survey with Heidi Taylor which added plenty of marine debris to the 70 bags collected by the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers previously.

Some of the debris was arranged by the students into a descriptive installation (pictured above) which included a cleared area in the centre depicting “how our beach should be”, surrounded by ghost nets and marine debris representing “what is happening to our beach”. A waste management session, conducted by John Harrigan, followed and the students developed strategies to manage the waste at their school and at home. Janie Creek is a unique area for shorebirds, and the students were given the opportunity to observe and learn about some of the birds inhabiting the area. Mapoon Land & Sea Ranger co-ordinator Jane Blackwood gave the students an insight into the turtle monitoring work conducted by the rangers, as well as explaining erosion issues in the area, before the students planted She Oaks and Beach Almonds to stabilise some areas. All students agreed the Future Leaders Eco Challenge was an interesting way to learn more about the unique Janie Creek area and how to protect it for future generations.

A bird watching station was set up for the students to study shorebirds.

NATURE

The good wasp is hairy not scary AS spring flowers are starting to bloom in your backyard this September, the Hairy Flower Wasp is out in force. This large, blue wasp turns many heads in the warmer months, due to its distinctive markings, hairy body and lovely iridescent blue wings. These wasps are great for your garden and not aggressive, so Backyard Buddies* wants you to know how you can be their buddy. “People tend to think that every wasp will sting, but the Hairy Flower Wasp is not at all aggressive towards people,” said Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “A Hairy Flower Wasp does have a sting, but it is rarely used. This is because, unlike a bee, Hairy Flower Wasps live alone and don’t have a hive or colony to protect.”

“If you spot a Hairy Flower Wasp in your garden, count yourself lucky,” said Ms Bradshaw. “They are nature’s pest controllers, and they will pollinate your flowers and help your veggie garden along. Best of all, they do it all scot-free.” After mating, a female Hairy Flower Wasp digs through soil or wood to find a grub or beetle. When she finds one, she paralyses it temporarily and lays her egg in it, and reburies it in its underground chamber. “As the Hairy Flower Wasp larva develops, it feeds off the host bug. Lucky for you, the Hairy Flower Wasp is very good at picking unwanted and harmful beetles to use as a host,” said Ms Bradshaw. “While it’s bad news for the host grub or beetle, it’s great news for your garden.” Hairy Flower Wasps are also useful

in the garden as a pollinator, much like bees. The tiny, fine hairs that cover their bodies carry pollen from flower to flower. “Keep an eye out for the Hairy Flower Wasp feeding on the nectar of your flowers this month. They use the sweet, sugary nectar as energy to power their flight. While the larvae of the Hairy Flower Wasp feeds on a host beetle for sustenance, the adult wasp only drinks nectar,” said Ms Bradshaw. “The Hairy Flower Wasp makes a buzzing sound very similar to a bee or other wasps. If you take a careful look, you may just see that your visiting insect is indeed a friendly Hairy Flower Wasp as they live in most parts of Australia.” *Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. Interesting facts about Hairy Flower Wasps: • There are two main kinds of Hair Flower Wasp – a dark Black or Blue Hairy Flower Wasp, and a second group Campsomeris that have yellow bodies and look like bees. • The Hairy Flower Wasp is large, growing up to 3cm. • The females’ antenna is shorter than the males. • The female wasp has spindly legs that are designed to help her dig through wood and soil to find beetle grubs for her eggs. • The Hairy Flower Wasp’s favourite beetles to lay their eggs in are the Cowboy, Rhinoceros, Scarab and African black beetles. • There are over 300 species worldwide in the Scoliidae family of wasps that the Hairy Flower Wasp is a member of?

Be a Buddy to the Hairy Flower Wasp: • Set up a compost heap in your garden to attract Hairy Flower Wasps and to save organic matter from ending up in landfill. Veggie scraps will easily make nutritious compost for your garden. • Spread chopped mulch around your plants to retain moisture and attract Hairy Flower Wasps, lizards and many other great backyard buddies. • Plant local native flowering plants in your garden to feed and shelter Hairy Flower Wasps, butterflies, honeyeater birds, small birds and many other buddies. • Look out for the Hairy Flower Wasps buzzing around tree stumps, sawdust, mulch and compost piles in your backyard, and be careful not to sit or step on them. • Avoid using pesticides and chemicals in your garden, and you will see many more natural pest controllers such as ladybeetles, wasps and spiders, as well as other good bugs like bees and butterflies. • The Hairy Flower Wasp particularly loves sugarcane mulch and the flowers of the Mango tree, so include these in your garden to attract them.

Natalie Dean from Rydges in Cairns and Matt Trevett-Lyall from Qantaslink. were the guest speakers at the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce networking evening last Wednesday at the Weipa Motel Resort function centre.

On Wednesday, September 19 the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce hosted a networking evening for its members and their invited guests. This auspicious occasion was held at the Weipa Motel Resort Function Centre and the night included a two-course meal, guest speakers, laughter, lots of interesting conversation and the opportunity for business owners to partake in the age-old art of networking. While Chamber members and their guests were enjoying a delicious meal and sipping cooling ales and bubbling wines, they were enlightened and informed by two guest speakers. The first guest speaker was Matt Trevett-Lyall from QantasLink who updated the enthusiastic crowd with the latest changes and newest plans scheduled by Qantas. The second speaker for the evening was the lovely Natalie Dean from Rydges in Cairns.

Natalie also delivered interesting updates in relation to the planned and exciting modernisations within the Rydges domain. This was followed by an open and animated question time during which information was again exchanged amidst laughter. Several business owners also spoke of individual problems and concerns in this time and discussed how these might be alleviated. Throughout the Cape region, the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce supports its members and their businesses. The Chamber recognises the vital role networking can contribute to the success of these businesses. The goal of networking should be to help and support other people, and as a result, help yourself and your business to thrive and succeed. Customers and fellow business owners, both current and potential, will want to do business with you when they like and trust you, hence, part of successful

networking is about building relationships. The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce encourages potential members to contact the Chamber should you have any questions or queries in relation to becoming a member on 0429 062 449. The Chamber also acknowledges current members and would like to sincerely thank them for their ongoing participation with the Chamber. The Chamber plans to host similar evenings in the future so stay tuned members – many more great nights will be coming your way soon or, alternately, should a Chamber member like to host a similar event the Chamber is in full support of this. Please note, the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce AGM will be held on October 17, 2012 at 6:30pm at the Convention Centre. All members can either nominate or put forward office bearers. Regards, Yvette Carter

Reedybrook carnival organisers to retire Alf Wilson story and pics

THE organiser of a unique outback cricket carnival which celebrated its 30th year has been glowing in her praise of the Weipa Crocs. Joan Harriman and her husband George own Reedbybrook Station which is beside the upper reaches of the mighty Burdekin River via Mount Garnet. The carnival is played each August on three concrete pitches on the cow fattening section of the station. All money raised at

the carnival goes to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Joan and her husband are retiring from running the carnival after the 2012 contest contested by 12 teams, including the Weipa Crocs. “They travel the longest distance to get here and always spend money, and many of them are our good friends. Weipa has been coming here for the past 14 carnivals,” Joan told the Bully. The 2012 carnival was won by Ravenshoe from West Endies of Mareeba. The Michael

Atkinson Memorial Trophy for best all-rounder went to W. Firth of West Endies. “The auction this year raised $17,000 and the carnival about $40,000,” Joan said. You are liable to see cattle near the grounds, snakes on the first day of the two day carnival, and lots of cow pats. “The fields are mowed just a few days before the cricket commences and we are always expecting a lot of people to be here. “The RFDS is an important organisation to people who live in

remote areas,” Joan said. Players and supporters camp on the upper freshwater section of the mighty Burdekin River and most camp for the weekend. Kids and adults can enjoy great swimming and fishing which has seen many Sooty Grunter and Bream caught in past years. The carnival will still go on in 2013, but will be organised by others. The Crocs next major away tournament will be the Goldfield Ashes at Charters Towers next January.

Reedybrook cricket carnival organiser Joan Harriman was full of praise for the Weipa Crocs who have competed in the event for 14 years.

Argun Warriors take Murri Knockout honours Alf Wilson story

L A S T F e b r u a r y We i p a footballer Keiji Bowie confidently predicted that champion rugby league side Argun Warriors would win the prestigious 2012 Queensland Murri Knockout carnival at Ipswich. That prediction proved to be spot on last Sunday (September 30) when the Argun Warriors side for which Bowie was a key player won the grand final, beating Yarrabah Seahawks 30-12. In the ladies grand final, Kape Kodel which included players from Cape York, the NPA and the Torres Strait reached the grand final before losing 32-nil to the Dream Team. The Argun Warriors side included NRL stars Chris Sandow and Travis Waddell. After that great victory, the Gerald Bowie Argun Warriors are one step away from becoming Australia’s best Indigenous Allblacks rugby league team. The four day carnival was held from September 27 to 30

and Argun Warriors led 14-6 at half-time, ironically against the only other North Queensland side in the comp. Argun Warriors will meet Newcastle Yowies - the winner of Monday’s (October 1) NSW Indigenous Knockout Comp at Raymond Terrace, near Newcastle, as a curtain-raiser to next year’s Indigenous All Stars versus NRL Allstars clash. The winner of that will be judged the best Indigenous Allblacks side in the country. After the carnival Argun Warriors star Ricardo Laza was named in a 20-man squad to tour the USA. Speaking to the Bully soon after the carnival win, star Argun Warriors fullback Guyai Nona said the majority of players were from the TSI, NPA or Cape York. “Centres Keiji Bowie starred along with Harold Mosby, five eighth Maipele Morseu, forwards Joe Tamwoy, Ricardo Laza, Masi Nona, Bobby Nona, and 17-year-old Yamba Bowie,’’ Guyai said. A r g u n Wa r r i o r s h a v e dominated North Queensland

Allblacks carnivals in recent years having taken out the final of the 2011 Cairns Allblacks carnival which had 30 men’s teams. That Argun Warriors side also included Chris Sandow and Travis Waddell and defeated East Coast Dolphins 32-24 in the decider. Argun Warriors also took out the 2011 Island of Origin Series grand final at Badu Island in June defeating Saguci 20-14 in a quality grand final. That was the last Origin carnival as no event was held in 2012. Organisers of the side believe it is the best in Australia and several months ago planned an assault at the Murri Knockout with Keiji Bowie one of the prime movers. Guyai said Argun Warriors won all their games at the carnival. “It was tough winning as there were some good sides and Southern Dingoes had lots of stars,” Guyai said. Now Argun warriors will get their chance on the big stage to prove they can win that title.

Spilla's Spin... on rugby league 2012 PREMIERS

Scotty’s AFL round-up 2012 PREMIERS

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY:

The mighty Melbour ne Storm are now the new premiers in the NRL. The Bulldogs and the Storm went toe-to-toe in the grand final and it wasn’t long into the game before some emotions decided to get a little heated. Bulldog front rower James Graham allegedly bit Billy Slater on the ear - what was this guy thinking? It was an ugly stage in the game, but the players quickly moved on and played some entertaining footy. Both teams were at each other the whole time with some great match-ups. The Storm got off to a whirlwind start but the Bulldogs had no

answer to the smartness of Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk. To the Dogs credit they never stopped trying with Ben Barba and Josh Morris electrifying in attack, but the Storm held their nerve to run out winners in a very physical clash 16-10. It was a fitting result, seeing the two best teams all season in the final with the mighty Storm boys just showing their class over a young talented Bulldogs team. I’m sure the Bulldogs will be back bigger and better next year. Congratulations to Craig Bellamy the super coach who has guided the Storm to three grand final wins in the last

five years. On a final note, I would just like to thank you for all support throughout the 2012 NRL season and patience for taking time out to read this column. I hope I have helped in your tips and wish many more people more success in the future. I would really like to thank Giembra and Stretch as they have been great to be associated with. You are great Cape people and will always hold a special place in my heart. Once again, thank you for another great footy season. Yours in league Spilla

“Cheer, cheer the Red and the White...” If that’s not still ringing in your ears you need to get your ears checked or your heart tested. With apologies to all Hawks supporters out there, “How good was that?” I ask you, have you ever seen a grand final victory with so many stories to tell? Goodsies hammy, McVeigh and the tragedy of the last 18 months, Kieren Jack and his old man the rugby league legend who couldn’t win a premiership and now watches his son run around in the Great Game, Mike Pike and his mum all the way from Canada, Big Mummy, the boy from Bunyip who holds the world record for eating sausage rolls before training - I could go on and on. The old guy (will someone tell me who he is?*) who is always around the club and was in the thick of it during the team song in the rooms, how good was he? It speaks volumes for the club and the game that there is such culture and strength around a team like this. A band of misfits and bit-part players who rose above the behemoth that is the Hawks, and played like a team possessed to take out the big one. The superlatives don’t do it justice, if you missed it, get it on DVD. Over at our house we had a quiet GF day and watched the game with The Alakanem

Couch Snoozer and family. Having had some trouble with getting young Benjamin David Campese Warner to sleep during the day, I think we hit upon a winner as with the sound of the GF blaring out, he slept like a log right under the stereo speaker. I will be offering up radio podcasts of the last 15 years Grand Final commentaries for them to take home and help with putting the little fella to sleep. Bodes well for a “Jack Family like” conundrum for the Warners, as while its sure to provide some peaceful months ahead with some decent sleep for the mum and dad, its sure to turn little Benji into a raving mad Aussie Rules fan when he’s older - it will be imprinted in his brain. It’s an opportunity too good for me to pass up and I’ll continue to do my bit to grow the game. This year we’ve seen highlights a plenty at home, and I’m pleased to say, with some assistance from all involved, the family has survived another footy season. It’s been a pleasure to put digit to keyboard on a weekly basis and keep you, dear reader, informed of all things football, as well as a few of the household highlights. For those amongst you that keep in touch with our family events through these pages, you’ll have to make the effort to catch up for a few months as the cricket season is upon us and the writer in me goes

into hibernation for the summer. Management will be pleased to see the friends she last saw in March before they started reading about her. Thanks to The Princess and The Deputy, without who there would be scant material to get me through. Azrael and The Three Legged Houdini don’t really know I write about them so why I am mentioning them I don’t quite know, and thanks to Management for keeping me on the straight and narrow and finally agreeing to feed me after a few weeks of dabbling in Guantanamo Bay-like torture. All in all a good year. I’ll be surprised if this weeks edition of the Bully doesn’t come out in Red ink as the Editor is a mad Swan, so thanks to Stretch and Gee for letting me get away with writing rubbish in the paper for a few months - it’s good fun and much appreciated. Cheers for 2012, Maca *The “old guy” is a lifelong Sydney Swans supporter and number one ticket holder, Kenny Williams. Send your fishing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com IT’S been another glorious week weather wise and the fishing didn’t disappoint anyone who wet a line this week. There have been several out chasing the Sailfish and Marlin in preparation for last weekend’s Billfish competition with multiple hook-ups coming to several boats. The fish are over a large area from the 20 metre line out to the 40s. Mackeral are where you find them - the trick is to find the bait and you will find the fish. Look to the skies and watch the birds they will be hovering about the bait waiting for the fish to drive the bait to the surface. Down in the depths there have been some particularly good Trout taking Squid and Prawn. Tuskies and also Stripies are their for the taking as well. Out around the leads there have been some Fingermark and

Trevally on the prowl and there has been a few Spaniards also taking tolled lures with the Laser Pros in the qantas colour doing the damage. The reefs up north have been producing good fish. Both surface and sub-surface feeders have been going off and Kerrs Reef would have to be the pick of them. There have been some good fish around where the boats moor up in Boyds Bay with Cobia up to 10 kilos taking baits meant for smaller fry. Gary the baker has been taking his young bloke Josh out around the leads for Fingermark, Cobia and a Bat Fish caught in the rear end. Sue and Gerard Bulters from Sydney come into the shop for some advice. They left the shop with a few new lures and, armed with some pointers went and

fished the Mission River for some under-sized Barra, Queenies and Barracuda. The next day they went to for an overnighter to Cullen Point where Sue caught some nice Bream off the beach, but the highlight for her was her first legal Barra. Evans Landing has been producing some nice Grunter on Prawns and Squid. The fish are biting on the walkway leading out to the main wharf. Rocky Point boat ramp has a been giving up some nice Barra on the high tides just on dawn and dusk. The Mission River Bridge has been fishing extremely well for large Threadfin Salmon on 7 inch Nuclear Chicken and some large Mangrove Jacks. Full report on the Billfish competition in next week’s Bully.

IMP runner Nicky Kerindun in Weipa this week. By Giembra Busmer

AS the sun rose over Alice Springs in the early hours of Saturday, September 22 morning, nine Indigenous athletes from across the country conquered the biggest challenge of their short running careers. Members of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project team amongst them was Weipa runner Nicky Kerindun, who had the run of her life, finishing a 21.1km course (10.1km futher than she had ever run) in three hours to make it into the

squad for the Boston Marathon in April next year. Originally from Aurukun, 22-year old Nicky is currently working full-time in Community Relations for Rio Tinto Alcan in Weipa, and says she is proud of her achievement. “This is the first time I have tried running, Nicky said. “In fact, I never really like running and I hated doing cross country races. 2011 IMP runner Bianca Graham encouraged Nicky and her sister Anna to attend the try-outs for this year’s squad earlier this year.

“We only had to run three kilometres around the cricket oval and although we both struggled, Anna did better than I did, Nicky laughs. Nicky is already starting to train for her next event, a 30 kilometre race in Canberra in February, 2013, working to a routine set by her coach which includes pool sessions and extended training runs. For someone who didn’t like running at the beginning of the year Nicky has embraced the challenge and is looking forward to the next leg on her journey.

“I was freaking out before the Alice Springs run and I rang my family who told me to calm down and just do my best. That’s just what I did and I feel more confident now. Nicky says that once she has conquered the Boston Marathon she will be working towards a place in the New York Marathon. She will be joined by fellow IMP runner Emma Cameron. “It’s going to be really cold in Boston but I’m looking forward to the race...and the shopping afterwards!
