Cape Alumina aims for 2014 start to Pisolite Hills project In a time of worsening news for the Australian mining sector, the economic prospects of Cape York received a welcome boost last week with the announcement Cape Alumina could start construction of its Pisolite Hills project in early 2014, with exports to begin by the end of the same year. The decision to resume the previously moth-balled plans came a day after the Campbell Newman-led LNP government declared Pisolite Hills as a “significant project”. The Queensland government decision represents a winding back of the previous Labor government’s Wild Rivers legislation, which Cape Alumina said made the project unviable. Cape Alumina Managing Director, Graeme Sherlock, told the Western Cape Bulletin the company would immediately resume talks with local Traditional Owners that were almost

complete when the project was put on hold in October 2010. With agreement on the requisite Indigenous Land Use Agreement almost achieved at that time, Cape Alumina is hopeful that all the paperwork for the project can be submitted to the federal government by the end of 2013. “We expect to be in a position to start construction of the project following the approval of the Environmental Impact Study and the receipt of other government approvals. This is presently anticipated for early 2014 with the first export sales of bauxite expected later that year,” Mr Sherlock said. Mapoon Mayor, Cr Peter Guivarra, agreed that the Traditional Owners were previously close to concluding an agreement with Cape Alumina, despite some divisions in the community about possible environmental harm to the “life-blood” that is the Wenlock River.

Still “meating” your needs in 2012!
Good evening. Tonight I would like to speak to you about bullying. This is a very serious topic, and one that has been in the news a lot recently. You can find it at all levels of our society; in schools, in the work place, in families and, worst of all, in constant attacks by the media. It can be incredibly damaging, and I want you to join me in putting a stop to it wherever we can. I expect you have all had some experience with bullying at school. Believe, there is nothing so calculated to break a mother’s heart than to have her child

those good enough reasons for this relentless bullying? Now the papers are full of his supposed inability to relate to women. What ridiculous rubbish! Tony comes from a household run by four women, and I can assure you that he has always been perfectly well behaved. He is reasonably clean about the house, and never leaves the washing up to wait for tomorrow. He does the laundry and makes valiant attempts to do the ironing, although I’m afraid that is a little beyond his skill level. Admittedly, we do have the occasionally tantrum when we want to watch the footy and he would prefer an airy-fairly romance on another channel, but we work around that. Generally he does the coffee and nibbles while we watch, and we switch over during the advertising breaks. So I’m not going to tolerate any more bullying of my Tony. It is going to stop today, and if any reporter or politician thinks differently, they will have me to deal with.

come back from school in tears because of a bully. The poor little tyke has had a terrible time all day, and knows there can be no escape. He will have to go back to school day after day and face the same abuse - unless society puts its foot down and stops the bullying. Take my Tony as an example. For as long as I have known him, he has been the target of our rabidly socialist media. For no sensible reason at all, they have chosen to attack him week after week, month after month. So what if his ears are a little large, and he has strange ideas about his place in the world? Are
rhetoric. A fact completely ignored by the Wilderness Society is that Weipa was founded on the mining industry, the town’s future and the future of its nearly four thousand residents is largely dependent on mining - in particular the South of the Embley project. The WTA along with the Regional Organisation of Councils will continue to speak out against World Heritage nomination by organisations out of touch with the people of Cape York, and again intent on using Cape York as a bargaining chip for green votes at the next Federal Election, now probably due in the first part of next year. Until next edition, take a moment to consider how you can make a difference and Weipa a better place to live.

with the WTA here in Weipa. I am keen to keep the community appraised of the progress in the coming months. One of the issues WTA did take on board very early in this term was the town’s need for improved access to fresh produce and to commence discussions with Woolworths’ senior regional management. With a very passionate new store manager in Jenny Everist, Sea Swift indicating to us early on in discussions that a second weekly fresh food drop was “achievable”, and senior management accepting our submissions all the stars had
aligned. The announcement last week of the new “doubleup’ on fresh produce has been an outcome well received across the community - fresh fruit and vegies on a Friday and Saturday. On a far more serious note the WTA has noted with concern the current campaign by the wilderness Society in lobbying governments both State and Federal to endorse a nomination for World Heritage across Cape York. With absolutely no balance in their argument the Society is claiming that both RTA and Cape Alumina are trying to “industrialise” Cape York with their prposed projects; South of the Embley and Pisolite Hills. There is no talk of economic sustainability or striking a balance between the environment and economic development in any of their

Mapoon and Aurukun set to maintain alcohol controls By Corey Bousen
The Western Cape Aboriginal communities of Mapoon and Aurukun both look set to retain existing alcohol restrictions as the Campbell Newman-led government announces a review of Alcohol Management Plans. The Napranum Aboriginal Council said it did not wish to comment on the matter at this stage. Mapoon Mayor, Cr Peter Guivarra, told the Western Cape Bulletin he and follow councillors are “adamant” they do not “want any changes at all, and certainly not an increase” to the amount of alcohol that can be purchased. Mapoon residents are currently allowed to buy 2 litres of wine, two cartons of mid-strength beer and one carton of premixed spirits, or 2 litres of wine and 3 cartons of mid-strength beer. Aurukun Mayor Derek Walpo told The Australian newspaper that his community wanted to maintain its total ban on alcohol, despite a “nightmare” surge this year in the sly-grog trade. “We don’t want to uplift our AMP,” he said. “If we have more people working then eventually the AMP will fall away. We want to implement our law and order,” Cr Walpo said. Glen Elmes, minister for indigenous affairs, last week announced a review of AMPs in 19 indigenous communities across the state, which was an election commitment made by Campbell Newman. Cr Guivarra said it the final decision on whether or not the current alcohol restrictions will remain unchanged will be made by the community.
“The Mapoon Council will consult with the public over the next couple of weeks and then making a final decision, although I know councillors will recommend to the community that the current AMP remains the same,” he said. There may even be a chance of a possible tightening of Mapoon’s relatively generous alcohol limits, the Mayor said, with some suggestions that the purchase of cask wine be prohibited. “I know in the past that it is wine that has caused lots of dilemmas in the community but we appreciate that some people do conduct themselves in a good manner and they enjoy a glass of wine at night with their meal.” The solution may be permitting the purchase of up to two litres of bottled wine, while banning the sale of cask wine, he said. “There are a couple of theories getting around in the community and we want to make sure the final decision is supported by the community and that is why we will be going out there and doing consultation.” Cr Guivarra said he was proud of the people of Mapoon and how they have responded positively to the AMP, which was introduced in 2004. “Hard core drinkers have changed from VB to light and mid-strength beer and other bad habits changed pretty quickly across the community,” he said. He said the community, which enjoys relatively low levels of alcohol related problems such as domestic violence, saw the right to buy alcohol as a privilege that could be lost if community norms deteriorated.

Mapoon Mayor, Cr Peter Guivarra, says the council does not want any change to current alcohol limits.
Elsewhere on Cape York, NPA Mayor, Cr Bernard Charlie, said he wanted to relax the current alcohol management plan, which ban fortified wine and bottled spirits. “We’ve got Thursday Island only 30 minutes from here by boat so we’ve got people tripping and travelling in rough weather just to get the same drink the Australian public can get when they want to walk to the pub,” he told The Australian. “There should be strict alcohol management in places like Kings Cross; they’ve got more problems in one week than we’ve had in 10 years,” he said. Lockhart River Mayor, Cr Wayne Butcher, says he wants his community to remain dry. “Lockhart has been a dry community for a good nine years now... it’s almost come to be a thing that people accept... that (alcohol) is not a good thing for the community,” he said. “There’s a lot less violence, the place is a lot cleaner, there’s no empty beer cans lying around.”

Cr Guivarra told the Western Cape Bulletin that the Mapoon community had been divided about allowing mining to take place at Pisolite Hills from “day one”. “The older people and the elderly want the country to remain the same and don’t want the mining but the middle-aged and the younger ones want the mining and the jobs and the other benefits, including royalties,” Cr Guivarra said in a phone interview last Friday. The biggest concern for all the Mapoon people, young and old, is that the waters of the Wenlock and Ducie Rivers remain unharmed by mining, he said. “It’s the water country that people mostly fear could be harmed by dredging or spills. If we lost the water country we would lose our life-blood. “The Wenlock River is the life-blood of Mapoon as it feeds us all year round and we want to maintain that for ever and ever and continue to use the river as a food source,” he said. Environmental group the Wilderness Society, which was the force behind the hotly debated Wild Rivers laws, has slammed the prospect of mining near the Wenlock River. “We will actively oppose this mine proposal at every step of the way. While the Wenlock Wild River Declaration remains in place, the river and adjacent landscapes have a chance of being protected from new mining,” Dr Tim Seeling, the Society’s Queensland Campaign Manager, said last week. The Wild Rivers law prevents any mining activity within 500 metres of waterways in the vicinity of the project, which could cut the amount of the project’s recoverable bauxite by 30 percent. Cape Alumina believes there is 134.6m tonnes of bauxite at Pisolite Hills, which is expected to yield 88.9m tonnes of bauxite on a dry-product basis.
It says the project has the potential to yield up to 7m tonnes a year of dry-product bauxite over a 15 year period. The company said its studies show the project will boost economic activity by $1.2 billion and create or sustain more than 1,700 jobs over the mine’s 15-year life, of which $600m will be injected to the Far North Queensland economy, including 1,300 jobs. Western Cape Chamber of Commerce President, Vance Wallin, said it was his personal opinion that the Pisolite Hills project was an important one for the region and “especially for the people of Mapoon”. With jobs at the mine to be a mix of local workers and those employed on a fly-in, fly-out basis, Mr Wallin said it was important for the mine workers to be based locally. “The mine should be operated locally. It shouldn’t be a fly-in, fly-out situation. That’s not going to help the local community,” he said. As a result of the decision to return to the Pisolite Hills project, “full steam ahead”, Cape Alumina has now put its Bauxite Hills mine project on the back-burner. Located 95km north of Weipa, the Bauxite Hills project is estimated to contain 60m tonnes of bauxite, with the potential to yield up to 5m tonnes a year of dry-product bauxite over a 10 year period. The news of the special status granted to the Pisolite Hills project has delivered some welcome relief for long-suffering Cape Alumina shareholders, increasing the share price to 13.5c per share as of the close of trading last Friday, which is up 50 percent from lows of under 9c per share at the end of September. There is still someway to go, however, for the share price to return to its float price of 50c per share on 29 January 2009. On Monday, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa held a luncheon at the Western Cape Cultural Centre to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the operation’s local Indigenous traineeship programme. Celebrations included a buffet lunch and speeches by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa representatives, Traditional Owners and trainees. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General manager operations Jo-Anne Scarini said more than 250 local Aboriginal people have taken part in the programme since it launched a decade ago, with more than 100 transitioning into permanent positions or apprenticeships. “This programme plays an important role in providing local Aboriginal people with an opportunity to obtain nationally recognised qualifications and work experience in the mining industry, with the potential to secure permanent employment,” Ms Scarini said. “The traineeship program has been an important development both for Rio Tinto Alcan, in assisting us to meet our objective of continually growing our local Aboriginal workforce, and for local Aboriginal people in assisting them to enter the workforce and the mining industry. “Trainees play an important role in our operations, and I am delighted that we were able to celebrate this considerable
Page 6 Western Cape Bulletin October 10, 2012
milestone at the Western Cape Cultural Centre.” Ms Scarini said the skills the trainees learn are portable and can open up career pathways outside the mining industry. “For example, graduates have gone on to work in other fields such as office administration in their local communities or even outside the local area,” she said. With an indigenous workforce of close to 25 per cent, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s traineeship programme recruits local Aboriginal people who have traditional links to the land on which the company operates. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Amanda Woodley was a part of the first trainee intake in 2002 and transitioned into a permanent position with the mine after completing the 18-month traineeship programme. “Having started with Rio Tinto Alcan 10 years ago as one of the original trainees and seeing the programme still being run strong with a consistent intake each year is great,” Ms Woodley said. Ms Woodley works within the Community Relations and Town department, liaising with surrounding communities regarding community and cultural heritage affairs. Asai Pablo, who was a part of the 2012 mid-year trainee intake, and who
is a Traditional Owner from the Injinoo community, says that the traineeship programmes provide valuable opportunities for surrounding indigenous communities, including “a supportive environment to improve qualifications and face new challenges”. During his 18-month traineeship programme, Mr Pablo will receive on-the-job training within his chosen work area while also completing a TAFE certificate within that discipline area. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s traineeship programme is conducted in collaboration with the Traditional Owners of the region through the Western Cape Communities Co-ordinating Committee and the Ely Co-ordination Committee. “We thank the Traditional Owners for their dedication and commitment to working with us to develop our local Aboriginal employment and training strategies and to improve our programmes over time,” Ms Scarini said. “In addition we acknowledge that both the State and Federal government have provided assistance to this program over time.” For further information on employment opportunities for local Aboriginal people, please call Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community feedback hotline 1800 707 633.
Shopping centre thieves caught on camera By Corey Bousen A destructive rampage by criminals perpetrating break and enters at the Heritage Shopping Centre on Monday night – that resulted in thousands of dollars in damage – was caught on video cameras with the footage now in the possession of the local police. The thieves broke into the Cape Cafe and the pharmacy and also
smashed windows at Tropicano’s fashion store and the Heritage Resort. Cape York Guardian Pharmacy owner Scott McCahon said his security cameras caught the perpetrators in the act, smashing the front door and the pharmacy till. No drugs were stolen, with Mr McCahon relieved that the intruders were scared off by the arrival of the baker at 2.30am.
“They ripped out the till drawer and generally made a mess and nuisance of themselves,” he said. Replacing the glass in the pharmacy’s front door will be “very expensive,” he added. Cape Cafe owner Juliet Christensen said the thieves got away with about $100 in change. The Cafe has now been broken into four times in the past couple of years.

QantasLink Executive Manager, John Gissing, (left) gets some local insight from Weipa Town Authority Chairman Peter McCulkin.
QantasLink boss visits Weipa QantasLink’s most senior executive, John Gissing, visited Weipa this week to meet with key customers. Mr Gissing, who is also qualified as a commercial pilot, has only been in the top job 100 days as of today (10 October) and was keen to hear from customers about how things can be done better. “There are always local issues which we need to take on board,” Mr Gissing said to guests at the breakfast meeting on Monday. Issues discussed included: • The affects of flight cancellations on Weipa • Better Sunday services to enable people from Weipa to attend meetings down south on Mondays, as they currently have to leave on Saturdays • The desire for QantasLink aircraft in Cairns to be positioned closer to the terminal when possible. QantasLink’s current 5 year contract for the Weipa route is due to expire in early 2013.
FEDERAL MP Warren Entsch is appealing to the generosity of locals to help a Weipa man who has undergone a traumatic series of medical mishaps over the last 22 months. Les Borthwick, 76, went into Cairns Base Hospital for a knee replacement but complications have forced him to undergo seven operations. During the most recent operation, a metre-long steel rod was inserted in his right leg, meaning he is now unable to straighten or put any weight on it. After being sent to a facility at Gordonvale several months ago for rehabilitation and treatment for a ‘super-bug’ infection, Les and his family must now decide what his future options are – and when he can move back to Weipa. In the meantime, in order to give Les some level of independence once he leaves hospital, Mr Entsch has this week launched a community-wide appeal to raise money for a mobility scooter. “Les has had a truly awful time and now all he wants to be able to do is walk,” Mr Entsch said. “While that may be a while off, it’s important that he has some freedom and independence in the interim and this scooter will help provide that.” Local businesses have already shown their support with Greg Martin, owner of the Scooter Shed on Mulgrave Rd in Cairns, negotiating a generous discount on a Shoprider
Rocky 4 machine. “This has all the specifications that Les needs – it’s a good size, rugged for the Weipa roads, has a long battery life and nice big wheels,” Mr Entsch said. “And because everybody in Weipa needs a Four Wheel Drive vehicle to get to their favourite fishing spot, Les’ machine is no different.” Les’ son Rob Borthwick, and long-time mate Graham Jonsen, are devastated at what Les has been through and the pair contacted Mr Entsch’s office recently to see what he could do to help. “Dad went into Cairns Base Hospital as a strong and energetic man, and now he’s in a wheelchair,” Rob Borthwick told Mr Entsch. “All he wants is to be able to walk again.” Les’ ordeal has included contracting a tropical disease that required isolation and a major Golden Staph infection, in addition to other events on which Rob would like to see a formal investigation undertaken. “This is a chance for the Weipa community to support one of their own,” Mr Entsch said. “People can donate towards Les’ mobility scooter in either of the following ways: By Post Send cheque to The Les Borthwick Scooter Appeal, C/- The Office of Warren Entsch MP Benevolence Account, PO Box 14, Bungalow QLD 4970. Napranum Safe House achieves care licence
Napranum Safe House has reached a very important milestone, having achieved the rigorous accreditation necessary to obtain a “Licence for a Care Service”. The licence is required under the Child Protection Act, and the Napranum Safe House was the first of its kind in the state to achieve this quality assurance milestone. Act for Kids Regional Director Debra Doherty said the achievement of the accreditation was a “mammoth task” for the Napranum team. “It was a great combined effort,” Ms Doherty said. The Napranum Safe House can accommodate up to six children, who are cared for by six full-time and “quite a few” casual staff, she said. The Safe House, which recently moved into a new, purpose built property in Napranum, is an important way to reduce the need for at risk children and young people to be removed from their local communities. “In the past they were sent away to Townsville, Mt Isa or Cairns”. The House also enables children to be integrated back into their community, if they have previously been away, Ms Doherty added. The Napranum Safe House has been very successful in achieving positive outcomes for children in the region, she said. Warren, Les and Graham Johnsen in Cairns this week.

Take a splash for your health at the pool As the weather is warming up and the days are getting longer we all feel the need to cool down either in our own pool or in the Weipa Pool. Swimming is a great total workout for everyone in your family and can be done for a lifetime. Swimming has a low impact on your bones and joints, increases your cardiovascular fitness, strengthens and tones most muscles in your body, while the water gives you a full body massage while you are working out. Other benefits you enjoy while going for a swim are that it helps to relive stress, helps you maintaining a healthy weight, it releases the pressure of you spine from long, standing, walking or sitting periods and gets you out while being healthy and having fun. Here is a great beginners workout you can do when coming to the pool after a longer brake which will be just enough to work all your muscles but not overwork you.

Warm up on dry land by swimming your arms forward and backwards, do some shoulder rolls and stretch your calves. Even better: walk or ride your bike to the pool. Warm-up swim: You muscles are tight for the first two minutes in the water and will warm up through movement. Start by swimming 250m any style and increase your speed slowly. Swim two sets of 250 m freestyle at a moderate pace. Do one minute vertical kicking on the side of the pool Swim 250 m freestyle, focusing on length per stroke and then increase your speed for another 250m. If you have fins available use them for a stronger leg workout. I like to finish my swim with a few laps of backstroke watching the sky, feeling like a new person when I get out. faithfulness is called for! Always keep an eye out for signs of the Lord’s return; we may not know exactly when a mango is going to be ripe, but we can tell when it’s nearly ready to be ripe. Watch out! Watch out! Watch out! Don’t fall asleep, which means that we must not get tired of remaining true to the faith, and continue giving out the gospel message. So how close are we? Many Christian scholars interpret verses 28-29 as the fig tree being the modern day forming of the nation of Israel, and that the generation that witnessed this event (from 1948) will not pass away till the Lord returns. That’s close! So keep praying for your loved ones and all others you know about to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour. God is always in charge of all events.
Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Congratulations Napranum PAL on your Deadly success I would personally like to congratulate the Napranum Parents and Learning Group on their success at the recent 2012 Deadlys, held at the Sydney Opera House. This local group received the Deadly Award for Outstanding Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education. What a great success story. It is fantastic to see the hard work by this local group recognised at such as high level. The Napranum Parents and Learning Group has been operating since 2004 and their program has since been established in 16 Indigenous communities across Australia and is continuing to expand. PAL is a home-based parent engagement program that supports parents to participate in their young child’s early literacy learning by providing resources and training delivered to family homes. Their programs are making a difference in the lives of many families in communities right across Australia. One of the best things we can do for our children to prepare them for the future is to ensure they receive a good education. PAL is supporting parents and extended family members to get their children engaged in and excited about learning and to prepare them for school. It is giving children a great start to life. This is an important part of helping to close the gap in Indigenous disadvantage. The Deadlys are an opportunity to recognise the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education workers and organisations on the national stage. They are our unsung heroes and deserve recognition and acknowledgement for the valuable work they do and it was wonderful to see Ms Corine Matasia be presented the award on behalf of the PAL team. Well done Woolworths Following from last weeks front page of the Bully, it would be hard not to know that Woolworths now has two deliveries of produce each week. To the staff and management I say “Well done”. As most would know I am quick to bag things I see as adversely impacting on our great town. Some issues take a little longer than others to sort out. What has apparently been impossible to do in the past, new management has achieved in a matter of months. Again, well done. Crazy Pete.

South of Embley survey work for next two months Sally Scott, Principal Land Use Planner for North Queensland Bulk Ports Corproation, was in Weipa last week to discuss the Draft Land Use Plan with the community and stakeholders.
Have your say on Weipa Port landuse plan By Corey Bousen
It is during the wet season, when Weipa becomes an island accessible by only sea or air, that the importance of the Port of Weipa really becomes clear. To ensure that the future development of the port takes place in a timely and intelligent manner, the Weipa P o r t ’s l a n d o w n e r, North Queensland Bulk Ports, is developing the first ever land use plan for port, which is currently in draft stage. NQBP Principal Land Use Planner Sally Scott was in town last week to consult with the local community about the draft plan. “The Port of Weipa Land Use Plan is like a council planning scheme,” she explained. The plan defines the rules and goals for future development of
the port. Development within the Port of Weipa is done by the private sector, while NQBP works to facilitate these projects. Rio Tinto is curr e n t l y t h e l a rg e s t leaseholder in the port and will be expanding its activities with the establishment of passenger transfer facilities should the South of Embley project be developed. For people who weren’t able to catch up with Ms Scott during her visit, copies of the draft land use plan can be obtained from the NQBP website and submissions about any matters relating to the plan can be made up until 5pm on 9 November. Once all submissions are received, the NQBP will consider these and prepare a “submissions report”, which will also be made available on the NQBP website.
As part of Rio Tinto Alcan’s ongoing feasibility study into the South of Embley (SoE) Project, the next round of site survey work is due to commence during October. SoE Project Director, Laurie Hicks said Weipa residents may notice activity associated with the survey works over the next two months. “Site surveys are a normal, and critical, step in the feasibility stage of a major project such as the South of Embley,” Mr Hicks said. “While we will have work crews active in the South of Embley Project area as we firm up the engineering and design aspects of the Project, it is important to note that this does not indicate the Project construction has started. “The survey work is really all about getting the engineering details right, so that the Project can be built as planned, and as efficiently and as safely as possible.” Mr Hicks said residents may notice traffic associated with the survey works on the Peninsula Development Road, with equipment such as backhoes and drill rigs being brought to site. “Local contractors will be used for much of the work, while we will also need to bring in some people and equipment from outside the local area.” The work crew will be based on site for the majority of the survey period, which is expected to commence in mid-October and be completed within two months. The lease area during the survey period will be closed to the general public from 1 October to ensure public safety. The feasibility works will include: • Further geotechnical surveys to assist with the construction of Project infrastructure; • Further geotechnical surveys to determine the extent of any naturally occurring materials that can be used in construction; and • Work along Amban Road at Coconut Creek crossing to establish a realigned section of road to enable the safe and efficient passage of large vehicles during construction. Mr Hicks said construction on the project will not commence until all regulatory approvals have been received and an internal investment decision has been made. “Rio Tinto Alcan is working to provide the Commonwealth government with the information they need to approve the Project,” Mr Hicks said. “We anticipate the Commonwealth EIS will go on display in November this year, and we look forward to offering stakeholders the opportunity to take part in that process. “Of course, anyone with questions in regard to the Project can contact us at any time on 1800 308 938.”

SUDOKU No. 119
Your Lucky
Stars
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You will be very good at “reading between the lines”. If anyone tries to deceive you they will soon be caught. Use this strength to your own benefit. Romance. Be careful not to let a difference of opinion come between you and your partner. Your opinions may not be as different as you presently think.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)
This will be an excellent time to start a new project; especially one which is connected with a local sporting club. You have more skill than you realise. Romance. Your stubbornness and determination will impress a member of the opposite sex. Don’t change this characteristic as it is deemed attractive.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)
FOR KIDS
This would be an excellent time to start reading a new novel. An escape from reality will help put your present situation in perspective. Romance. Communications with your partner will be especially good this week. Make the most of the opportunity. Don’t worry about pulling all-night chatting sessions.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)
Don’t allow yourself to be too easily influenced by a friend. This person may have an ulterior motive that you are not aware of. Be more alert! Romance. Instead of trying to change your partner, you should do your best to accept them just as they are. Everyone comes with flaws and challenges.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
Animals in your care may be a little tense today. It is possible that they are picking up on your emotions. Calm your feelings before returning home. Romance. Your love-life will shortly be on the way up. You must be patient for just a little longer, however. This week may be the most difficult.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Try to give yourself a break. You have been working very hard recently and need to do something different. Do something dramatic. Romance. You may be a little slow to tell your partner how you feel about them. They need to hear it loud and clear! Tell them earlier in the week so that you can discuss it.
FINDWORD No. 119 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)
A new friend may be much more similar to you than you realise. You have a lot to talk about. Take your time getting to know them. Romance. Don’t allow stress to build up until it is too late. You have been doing too much recently and need to take it easy. Give yourself a break.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
An unexpected let-down should not make you lose heart. Keep on trying and you will get there in the end! This is the week to keep your head up. Romance. This should be the start of a very fruitful period, both for you and for your partner. Enjoy all of the wonderful things that will come your way.

MUDDY RIVER
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
You will be amazed at how easily you can work out what people are thinking. Anybody who imagines that they can do things behind your back is in for a surprise! Romance. An awkward situation at work may take you by surprise. Gather information before making judgements.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Money which you gained through the help of a friend or relative will have to be put to good use. Don’t forget to thank the person concerned. It’s up to you to share your fortune. Romance. Don’t judge a new acquaintance by their appearance. There is much more to them than you assume.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
“
It is not beauty that endears; it’s love that makes us see beauty.
– Leo Tolstoy
Page 14 Western Cape Bulletin October 10, 2012
SOLUTIONS No. 119
You will have to take a more active approach in getting what you want this week. A method from the past may need to be changed. Romance. Your partner will appreciate some compliments. Let them know how strongly you feel. Be sure to comment on small details to really show you notice them.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
A petty argument between two family members will have to be resolved. Wait until later in the week to become involved. Romance. Give your partner a surprise today! A romantic gesture will help to bring you together. The surprise should be something outrageous that your partner wouldn’t have expected.

Skywalker and Boba Fett likely to star in squash wars final A1 Grant Foster (black T-shirt) (Team Han Solo) versus Dave Edward (White singlet) (Team Darth Vader) in an actionpacked game resulting in Grant winning (3-1).

Kart Report
Dirt Karts set for action this Saturday By Derek Mowles
Squash Report
As Weipa Squash Club closes down for the School Holidays, there seemed no rush to report on the last week’s games before mass evacuation by its members. My prediction for the finals will be these two teams, Skywalker and Boba Fett as they tied on Tuesday night and Team points had to be awarded on a countback of players scores and there was only a total of 8 points difference! Incredible! Team Skywalker were the victors resulting from A1 Luke Dorsett’s points but not victory over Shane Hearps (2-3), A2 Ross Hyytinen defeated Jeff B erry (3-2), A3 Shane Spagnol was not to know how crucial his points were when he pre-played against Jarrod Stockman and did not forfeit (0-3), A4 Ben Tantau chose his sub wisely in Alex when he narrowly beat Justin Hyytinen by 4 points (3-2), A5 Michael Cridland defeated Barry Sutton (3-1). Team Darth Vader went down to Team Han Solo when only one player was victorious (and only by 4 points!) in their match win. I was privileged to witness a spectacular rally in the game between A1 Dave Edward and Grant Foster with every type of shot from every centimeter of the Court (how remiss of me to not video it!) (1-3), A2 Rod Bielby and Nick Brookes battled it out but Nick showed a new vigour (congratulations by the way to Nick on his marriage!) and pulled oup the winner (1-3), A3 Jay Dumbleton could not match Glen Egan’s prowess on the night (0-3), A4 Jay Murray likewise went down to Wendy Long (0-3), A5 Jimmy Baira lost in points however won the match (3-2) against Joe Buckley. Fantastic! Team R2-D2 were almost mirror-image of the previous two teams in their grueling loss against Team Obi Wan Kenobi with only one player being victorious. A1 Owen Witt was just warming up but lost to Rod Wawrzyniak (0-3), A2 Aaron Schleich lost despite the first (which he won) and third games being “long” when he came up against Tom Murray (1-3), A3 Dallas Goodwin was the winner albeit it was only 2 points, but more importantly 2 games against Steve Lugsdin (3-1), A4 Sherie Hinschen lost her winning streak against Cole Dalton (0-3), A5 Adam Blocksidge played a lengthy and showy game against Ben Braun but it was not his night (1-3). In B Gtrade Teams Princess Leia and C-3PO were evenly matched when B1 Chris Bienvenu defeated Donna O’Neill in their pre-played match (3-0), B3 Nicole Dearling suffered defeat at the hands of Wayne Ailey (0-3), Renee Williams (as sub for B4 Tim Manning) narrowly lost to Katie Delfs in points (0-3), B6 Lucy Boxall won her match in style against Shaun (3-0). Team Yoda went down to Team Jabba when B1 Otis Drum won one game and forced another to “long” against Adam Woodhouse (as sub for Ben Smith) (1-3), B2 Kerry Scales soundly defeated Patrick Lightart (3-0), B3 Brooke Gwynne lost to Fiona Newsome (0-3), B4 Andrew Glen was defeated by Ian Newsome (0-3), B5 Cicely Baira was able to gain 10 points for her side against Kristie Moran (0-3), B6 Jess Hall defeated Brandon Waretini (he gained his 10 points also)(3-0). Team Chewbacca were victorious against Team Ewoks in the two actual matches that occurred when Ben Ghee defeated Sam O’Neill (as sub for B4 Luke Mann) (3-1), and Yours squashfully was the eventual winner in a fantastic match against Charissa Hill (3-1) – thanks Charissa!
September, it happens every year. The footy season ends, the kids are so tired at the end of the school term that they just whinge all the time, and I spent too much money in Cairns again and this year. I welcomed a new member to my extended family, congrats Ben & Vide on your wedding. I was also going to mention I had another wedding anniversary but the wife has told me she doesn’t like me mentioning her in my articles so I won’t. But when September comes along, it also means that Santa starting to get ready to excite or disappoint a globe full of kids, more problems at my house but mostly it also means the Dirt Kart season is drawing to a close with possibly only 2 months left. That’s right, the rains will be here again people and we will all be locked up again in our community. Now even though you are all thinking no more fun, the Weipa Dirt Kart Club is here to make the wet season transition a smooth and satisfying one for all. So this Saturday night, the lights will be turned on and so will the action as the 2 stroke pocket rockets burst back into action. A strong field is expected this week with all the juniors raring to go after the holidays, plenty of wind with the KT Heavies and also good numbers and plenty of rubbish talk expected from the KT Mediums. So Saturday night, come out and support your community by supporting the family club, Weipa Dirt Karts. Racing starts 7pm, the dream begins now. A special mention must go to our series sponsors so far this year, Enzed Hose Doctor and also Hastings Deering. Your help is appreciated across the whole of our club and hope you keep on coming back. Also, a very special thankyou goes out to the people who keep on breaking into our canteen and stealing our stuff. The damage you create is really starting to piss the hard working committee and members off and we guarantee that you will be caught.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the results of the Statewide Recreational Fishing Survey showed recreational fishers caught almost 1.7 million yellowfin bream, 1.3 million sand whiting and 1 million trumpeter whiting. “Over the 12 month survey period from October 2010 – September 2011, recreational fishers caught approximately 13.3 million fish,” Mr McVeigh said. Catch and release fishing was also popular among Queensland’s recreational fishers. “Nearly half of all fish were released back into the water, showing that Queensland’s recreational fishers are committed to the sustainable management of our fisheries,” Mr McVeigh said. “These surveys are a key component of the department’s investment in fisheries monitoring, ensuring Queensland’s marine resources are safeguarded for the future. “Interestingly, near 97% of those surveyed did not belong to any fishing club or group,” Mr McVeigh said. Fisheries Queensland senior fisheries scientist Dr Stephen Taylor said it was important to collect reliable recreational fishing data. “Fish stocks can be overexploited
and care is needed to ensure that the total catch from recreational, commercial and charter fisheries does not exceed levels that would cause fish stocks to decline detrimentally,” Dr Taylor said. “The information from this survey will be combined with commercial, charter and scientific research data to ensure that our fisheries are managed on an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable basis. “These results will benefit stock and sustainability assessments and the recreational fishing sector,” he said. Survey results: almost all recreational fishers preferred to throw in a line and nearly half chose to fish from the shore fishing was consistent throughout the year, however in many regions there were peaks in April and September, coinciding with school holidays recreational fishers adopted new technology, fitting out their boats with echo sounders and global positioning systems most boat fishing occurred in coastal waters shallower than 40m in regions close to the Great Barrier Reef, coral trout, redthroat emperor and tropical snapper were commonly caught species Fitzroy and Mackay residents are big on their crustaceans, catching approximately 300,000 mud crabs over the survey period, and the catch and release method was particularly popular for freshwater species such as Australian bass, freshwater cod and golden perch.
Rivers continue to deliver By the time you read this report the barra season will closed for 2012 and will not be open till midday February 2013, this closure only applies to the Gulf areas and the east coast doesn’t close till midday 1st of November with the same resumption as the Gulf . All reports I have been receiving that there have been some good captures coming in from most of the rivers with the Mission river and Andoon creek fishing extremely well. Gary the baker and his son Josh caught over fifty barra but there were a lot of small fish. There were some very large fish cruising the edge of the flats but Gary said that they were reluctant to take a bait. They also got some nice muddies as well. Gary Mclean fishing
Kevin and Tracey, spent the long weekend up at Mapoon and got some good fish out of Janies creek but Tracey said the high light of the weekend was watching the turtles coming up the beach to lay their eggs. Fishing offshore has been pretty good as well with plenty of fish coming in of the leads. Just do a couple of drifts by and if nothing happens move on to the next one and do the same thing. If you get something then anchor up. There have been finger mark, trevally, queenies, and some big cobia. Further a field, up at Kerrs reef, there have been a few Spanish on the prowl and some good tuskies on the bottom. I will leave the billfish reports to the feature that
with his mate Darryl got a 98cm barra of the flats an hour before Darryl was due to leave to head back down south. I had had a session at the Mission river bridge with Gary on Wednesday night where we got a mixed bag of large tarpon, small queenfish, a couple of keeper barra’s and some good blue salmon. Around two in the morning a large croc was foraging around on the shore under the bridge for leftover bait and there were two guys fishing of the concrete and they never noticed it. Evans landing is still giving up some good fish with grunter, blue salmon and big queenies for the angler that are willing to persist. Some friends of mine,
is coming up. If you want Send your fishing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com to chase a sailfish or marlin start in 20 metres and This will be the last troll out to say 35 metres barra pic until next looking for bait on your February. sounder and when you find it keep working that area. You should also get some Spanish as a bycatch, and we even had cobia swimming around a hooked mackerel the other day. Boyds Bay moorings there has been some nice fish being caught with golden trevally, small cobia and small gt’s to give the overnighters some fun at night. Till next week calm winds, smooth seas and tight lines Cheers China
Barramundi ban now on in the Gulf country If you could hear grown men crying in your neighbour’s house at Midday last Sunday, it was because the four month ban on barra fishing had just begun. The barramundi, on the other hand, are feeling much more relaxed about spawning and regenerating future generations of the delicious fighting fish. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol said it would be said it will be “out and about” enforcing the ban in the waterways surrounding Weipa, so local anglers should be careful not to target this fish. Barramundi is now off limits in the Gulf of Carpentaria from noon Sunday 7 October until 1 February 2013. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Owen Witt said the closure was in place to protect barramundi stock during their vulnerable spawning
season. “During spawning, millions of eggs will be laid, but only a few will survive the natural selection process,” he said. “Barramundi typically aggregate in one area to spawn, making them more vulnerable to predators. “This behaviour also makes them more vulnerable to fishing pressure, so it´s important that barramundi are not targeted for catch and release during a closed season as the stress of capture may prevent the fish from spawning.” “These closures allow stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy fish stores for current and future generations of Queensland anglers,” he said. A barramundi closure will also apply in East Coast waters from midday 1 November until 1 February 2013.
The Boating and Fisheries Patrol says it has been one of the best barramundi seasons in north-west Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria in several years. It is the first year an annual four-month ban on the taking of barramundi will be in place, to allow the fish time to spawn. Mr Witt says the introduction of a defined fishing season gives anglers new certainty and will boost the population. “It has been quite a good season on all accounts, from the commercial fishing guys to the recreational tourists, it’s been not a bad year,” he said. “That could be the coincidence between not a bad wet season, and yes, the conditions are right.” Mr Witt says the regular four-month closure in the Gulf will allow anglers to plan well ahead of time.
“Now it doesn’t change like it used to,” he said. “By having a closure it will eliminate people upsetting the fish in their natural breeding cycle and it allows them to breed naturally. “It used to change every year and with the new regulation coming in we’ve now made it a fixed closure.”

Day 1 saw Striper off to an early lead with the first fish tagged in the first hour and Envee finishing the day with 2 and Tag Team also with 1. On Day 2 there was a hot bite for some and Envee streaked to a good lead with another 4 tags (and missed quite a few too by the sounds of it). Tag Team added 2 more and Striper another couple also. Manana (without a sounder) was steadily picking away with 3 fish in only a few hours as well. The final day saw a slow start but by lunch time Last Cast had 2 and Tag Team added 2 more. In the last hour Envee picked up their 7th fish and looked quite comfortable in front, but in a classic tournament twist, with only 3 minutes to cease fishing, Tag Team called in hooked up…………. to a triple header!! And they got all three to finish on 8 and take out champion team. What a finish!
