“I’ve no doubt that, through their determination and hard work, these graduates will become role models for others in their communities throughout North and Far North Queensland.” The program’s graduates have completed a seven-month live-in course to provide young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults with the life skills and confidence to secure opportunities and sustain continuous employment of their choice. A number of graduates are serving as Army Reservists in the 51st Battalion, the Far North Queensland Regiment, while they pursue employment in the civilian sector. Support for businesses to invest in local employees LOCAL businesses will be encouraged and assisted to employ Indigenous staff in the new year through the Indigenous Works Skills Program. Following last Thursdays final steering committee meeting for 2012, the Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) agreed that the key initiative, the Indigenous Works Skills Program, would be implemented in February 2013. Program co-ordinator Liz Logan said that without strong and sustainable regional business growth, the RPA will find it difficult to increase Indigenous employment and businesses. “The program will assist in building the region’s economy,” Ms Logan said. “The RPA Indigenous Work Skills Program will be looking to local employers to invest in and incubate Indigenous trainees and employees from within the region. “The program will provide significant levels of support to employers and employees, including pre-vocational skills, mentoring, accredited training and incentives,” she said. Running for over 12 months the program will support an

increase in Indigenous skilled labour force needed for upcoming major projects, including Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s South of Embley expansion infrastructure stage. The Indigenous Work Skills Program will ask businesses to invest in local employees and provide skills to their supervisors to retain Indigenous staff.
“One of the key aspirations will be to build confidence in local employers in their Indigenous staff,” Ms Logan said. “The RPA program is addressing gaps, not least of which are the costs of accommodation for FIFO staff. “There are people who live in the region’s communities
who want meaningful jobs but need substantial support – the RPA is looking to take some of the cost and risks associated with that support off the shoulders of employers” said Liz Logan. The program will be launched with employers in the next few weeks.
School leaders initiate Finn fundraiser THE exceptional leadership skills of Western Cape College’s Student Leadership Consortium were in full force on Tuesday, November 6, for the Melbourne Cup. Across the College, over $500 was raised through a free-dress fundraising event, initiated by the student ambassadors to support the Gordon family with Finn’s ongoing medical care. The ambassadors have furthered Weipa’s strong sense of community and it was fantastic to see so many people get involved. One generous parent even donated $100 out of their own pocket to contribute. The staff, students and parents of Western Cape College wish Finn the best recovery possible.

Indigenous staff complete retail training SIX newly-appointed Indigenous Woolworths Weipa staff met with Federal and State Government senior executives last Thursday who congratulated the trainees on completing their Certificate I in Retail. The successful recruits were participants of the Community Enterprises Australia (CEA) managed CDEP, however Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement co-orindator, Liz Logan said the outcome was the result of tremendous cooperation by local stakeholders. “This was successful because of the commitment of Woolworths manager Jenny Everist and her staff, CEA - in particular Patricia Wyatt, Derek Carter and all the CEA staff, Job Services Australia provider ITEC Employment and the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council. “This is the sort of outcome
that can be achieved when we locals all work together instead of in silos”, Ms Logan said. The staff also celebrated and received their certificates at a Woolworth’s barbecue on Friday with National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College diploma graduate, Rhonda Parry, one of the newlyappointed Woolworths staff, performing for the invitees. Ms Everist said at the barbecue that part of Woolworth’s approach to providing an improved shopping experience and fresher food more often, was to have the supermarket reflect the diversity of its customers and be inclusive of the whole population. “I’ve learnt as much from this group as they have from us, and we’re happy to make them part of our Woolworth’s family,” she more photos page 10 said.

Mapoon aboriginal Shire Council has been awarded a $9000 Federal Community Heritage Grant to fund a Indigenous Collection Work placements at the Museum of Tropical Queensland. The grant was announced in Canberra on October 30 this year to assist communities in the identification and preservation of community-owned but nationally significant heritage collections. Diane Nicholls and Ronaldo Guivarra from Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council also attended a three-day intensive preservation and collection management workshop held at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. Ms Nicholls said the grant was important in supporting the effort to preserve the collections which are kept in the Land & Sea Cultural Keeping Place at the grassroots level. “While the grant provides the funds, the workshop offers the expertise to help us protect our collection and make it

Diesel Field Services owner Jayson Keough has joined forces with Weipa Mo Abros Denis, Tim, Ben and Kevin for Movember.
ITCHY and scratchy top lips have been plaguing Weipa Ambulance crews during the month of Movember as they sport hairy facial decorations for a good cause. Growing sometimes dubious facial hair in November (Movember) is all about raising funds to support the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue who assist with male mental health initiatives.
It is also a reminder to all men to partake in some preventable health care and ensure they have regular check-ups by spreading the message “real men speak up, seek help and look after themselves”. Luckily, Jayson from Diesel Field Services has also jumped onboard with the Ambos, as with the questionable looks providing entertainment for friends, family and work colleagues one
of the Weipa Mo Ambros has succumbed to the pressure of some good old-fashioned sledging and shaved his top lip last week - so if you see a clean-shaven male Ambo (not pictured) around town prior to the end of the month be sure to give him a hard time. Anyone wanting to show their support for the local lads can donate online at au.movember. com and search for Weipa Mo Ambros.

Mapoon to overhaul community store MAPOON Aboriginal Shire Council will refurbish the isolated community’s only retail store with State Government funding. Council has received $52,035 from the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program to install new fridges, a freezer and an oven. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli said the fund-
ing would allow the shop to expand its range of products and provide healthier food to residents. “The next nearest shop is about 80km away in Weipa, and the entire Shire relies on the Mapoon store for groceries and supplies. “It is vital the shop has the equipment to store adequate stock,” Mr Crisafulli said.
Member for Cook, David Kempton, said he was very pleased with the Minister’s announcement as he had recently been to Mapoon and visited the store to see first-hand the difficulties it faced in providing good quality food at affordable prices with antiquated equipment. “The refit was long overdue,” he said.
WEI’NUM FOCUS ARTISTS DAPHNE DE JERSEY
COMMUNITY NAPRANUM/WEIPA
Daphne has always been an artistic individual, leaning more towards the tactile ceramics field as a student in secondary school and coming to find her painting ability in 2004.
The Napranum/Weipa region has a rich and diverse cultural history, which spans countless centuries, which has been brought to life by the acclaimed artists Thancoupie (Gloria Fletcher), now deceased.
Daphne’s own life experiences and events, coupled with her knowledge of bush food, passed down to her from her mother, is a signature representation in her works. With vibrant colour and striking technique, Daphne’s passion and creativity is apparent in each of her contemporary paintings.
Napranum artists Marsha Hall (a Thainakuith women) continues the legacy established by Thancoupie, with her painted abstractions of the Weipa region and topographical studies of the diverse landscapes, with prints such as “Mining Area” highlighting the aerial view of the mine when flying into Weipa Airport.

Working together to look after the Wenlock A conservAtion meeting held last week at Moreton telegraph station has resulted in the formation of working group for the Wenlock river catchment. More than 30 people with interests in land management and conservation on Cape York met to share information and discuss local issues. Coordinated by Cape York Natural Resource Management, and hosted by Conservation Director Barry Lyon, the meeting aimed to discuss and share knowledge about important conservation issues for Cape York Peninsula, and inform the conservation portfolio for Cape York Natural Resource Management. An earlier meeting held in Cooktown in October, was also attended by over 30 people. Several key conservation issues were identified at the meetings, including controlling the spread of weeds by vehicles, visitor management and the need for an integrated management approach for the Wenlock River catchment.
The formation of the Wenlock River catchment working group is considered a huge leap forward in managing the regions natural resources, according to Barry Lyon. “The Wenlock River is one of the largest and most significant river systems on the Cape, and there are many landholders who make up the catchment” Mr Lyon said. “By working together, we can ensure the Wenlock is looked after for generations to come” he said. The catchment group has the support on adjacent landholders from the source to the mouth of the river, including Mapoon and Napranum rangers and Traditional Owners, Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, Bertiehaugh sub-lease, Picaninny Plains and Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation. For further information about the Wenlock River Catchment working group, or outcomes from the conservation meeting, contact Cape York Natural Resource Management (1300 132 262).

How to get a flatter stomach
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
MANY people believe that doing crunches and abdominal exercises will help them achieve a flat stomach or give them the “six-pack” look, but, this is not true! There are many factors that contribute to a nice flat stomach, defined with the abdominal muscles. To achieve a flat stomach try some of the following tips • Adopt better sleep patterns How you sleep has a huge impact on your appetite and the foods you choose. After a good night’s sleep, you have much better control of your thoughts regarding food. After a night of poor sleep, your body craves sugar, fat and caffeine, which quickly (albeit briefly) prop up your energy levels. All this means is more fat on your tummy, crashing lows, a sugar addiction and poor sleep patterns. We’ve come a long way since going to bed when the sun sets and waking up when it rises, but this is how our bodies were designed to function. Our modern lifestyle puts extra stress on the body, which is bad news for your waistline. A hormone called leptin tells your brain when your stomach is full, and helps control appetite and metabolism. Not sleeping properly disrupts this hormone, which is why you eat more when you’re sleep deprived. • Burn fat all over body Doing crunches and core exercises are great for strengthening the muscles, but if they are covered in a layer of fat you aren’t going to get that flat or six-pack look you are after. All exercise in general is going to help you achieve fat loss. A combination of cardio and strength training is the best way to go, using multiple muscles at the same time rather than isolating muscles and getting your heart-rate spiking often.

WHEN the woman poured the expensive perfume over Jesus, (the gospel of John identifies her as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, the person he brought back to life), those who were with him, especially Judas Iscariot, protested that it was a waste of good money. But the Lord saw her actions as an act of worship and promised that what she had done would be told over and over wherever the gospel was preached. John Ch 12 vs 1 -6 reveals that Judas was the Treasurer of the Lord’s
• Diet Ever heard the term “flat abs are made in the kitchen”? Well, it couldn’t be truer. Cut out processed foods, sugar and saturated fats – the usual culprits that cause weight gain. Avoid eating your biggest meal at night; make dinner smaller and breakfast bigger. Eat plenty of vegetables, lean protein, fruits, nuts, seeds and whole grain products. Going into a calorie deficient mode is what you need to lose unwanted fat - you can use programs like calorieking.com.au or myfitnesspal.com to track your calories. Drink plenty of water to help with the elimination of toxins which like to fill your fat cells. • Alcohol With seven calories per gram, alcohol has almost the same calorie content as pure fat. Yet alcohol has no nutritional value, and despite its calorific content, may actually make you feel hungrier instead of less, as it lowers your blood sugar. To burn off the extra calories in one beer you need to do approximately 13 minutes running on the treadmill or playing football; 15 minutes cycling or 20 minutes swimming. Most people would baulk at sitting down and eating four or five 200-calorie packets of chips after work. Well, shockingly enough, if you go out and have four or five alcoholic drinks, you’re consuming the same number of calories. No wonder the flat abs are still a pipe-dream! It’s not really surprising then, that while you might go to the gym two or three times a week, play squash and run 5km on the weekend drinkers can still find it difficult to get rid of that fat around the belly. Everything in moderation is all I’m saying and if you are planning a big weekend you better earn it with a big workout!

group and was dipping his fingers into the moneybag all along! It’s interesting that not long after this, Judas decided it was time to betray Jesus. He had come to see that Jesus had no plan to raise an army and throw out the Roman enemy and set up a government. Jesus kept talking this weird talk of dying on a cross for the people. His hopes of perhaps becoming the first national Treasurer under the government of Jesus, and having access to greater amounts of money to steal, were dashed.
That was around about when Luke reported in his gospel “Satan entered him”. (Luke 22v 3). ! Timothy Ch 6 v10 says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Notice that it doesn’t say that money is the root of all evil, but the love of money is. Money is a great servant but a poor boss. The Lord provides Rev Michael Connolly

“My mother taught me and my sister art and craft work, like weaving and making necklaces and feather dress headbands and that too as well for corroboree and celebration.” Mr Elmes thanked the Northern Kaanju, Atambaya and Yinwum people and their advisors, the Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation and the Cape York Land Council, for their efforts and dedication to reaching the significant outcome.

THE Traditional Owners of the Batavia Downs property are celebrating a land hand-back, 15 years after a native title claim was lodged. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes signed over the Batavia Downs property to the Atambaya, Northern Kaanju and Yinwum people on behalf of the Queensland Government at a ceremony in Cairns last Thursday. Mr Elmes said a portion of the land at Batavia Downs will become national park, while another section will be declared Batavia Nature Refuge, and the remainder will be an Aboriginal freehold. Grazing will continue on the Batavia Downs property and Mr Elmes said the property could be used in a number of ways. “There is provision at Batavia for grazing, certainly in terms of eco-tourism, because it’s local Indigenous people when we had these additions to national parks who actually manage the national parks on our behalf, and I would love nothing better than to see a similar sort of exercise happen at Batavia,” he said. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)
A friend who is behaving a little strangely may need a while to settle down. Don’t be too quick to pass judgement on their recent actions. You have done something similar. Romance. The Moon/Ceres Midpoint in your sign will help to make you especially responsive to your partner’s feelings this week.

Don’t rush to tell everybody what you have been up to. If you can keep quiet for a little bit longer, you may be able to get away with it! Romance. You may be surprised how independent some members of your family are becoming! This independence may lead to friction, unless you are flexible.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
You have a lot of energy and could cause quite a stir if you feel that someone is taking advantage of you. Withhold your aid for a moment to test the waters. Romance. You will have to adapt quite quickly to some important changes. Your partner, however, may not be so flexible. Lead the way!

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

You will be rushing around a lot this week and possibly wasting a lot of time. Some of the journeys you make will not really be necessary. Map out your route to avoid this. Romance. You may be upset because of a recent let-down. Don’t respond until you have had a chance to relax. Maybe it was for the best.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
A difficult decision could create some stress for a while. So long as you ignore other people’s advice, you are unlikely to go very far wrong. Romance. Concerns for financial security will be important in your relationship over the next few weeks. Make the necessary cuts where you can.

“
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. – Malcolm Forbes
SOLUTIONS No. 126
Don’t divulge too much information about yourself. The more you tell, the nosier others will become! If you want something to remain private, keep it to yourself! Romance. Your partner will be very impressed by a warm-hearted gesture. Make it on the spur of the moment to make it more remarkable.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)
A member of your family who has been difficult recently may suddenly start to behave a little better. Don’t be too suspicious of the change! Romance. Don’t be afraid to jettison an idea which has lost its usefulness. You may need to ignore other people’s advice. Taking your own advice will be more worthwhile.

AROUND 50 students from Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon recently participated in a educational fun day at the Weipa Swimming Pool. Facilitated by Wendy Ross, Development Co-ordinator Disability Manager for Swimming Queensland, the participation initiative combined a teacher workshop with a fun day for children of all abilities and backgrounds. Wendy is currently taking the Make a Splash and Aquatic
Participation Fun Day programs to 38 communities in Queensland. “The initiative is free and the more support we can get for these programs the better,” Wendy said. “We want all children to learn to swim – learning to swim is not a sport, it’s a necessity.” Wendy said the support from the local schools for the Weipa program was fantastic and she hoped to be able to return next year with more aquatic fun days for young swimmers.

With the thunderheads rolling in earlier in the week and our first serious rainfall, the wet season is not far away. Fishing is still hot in the rivers and the ocean with most anglers putting a feed together. Three lucky anglers Dwayne, Scott and Chris, put in the hard yards on Sunday and left Evans Landing ramp at 2am to head up to Duyfken Point to fish their favourite spots. They had to move a few times, but put together a feed of Tuskers, Fingermark and assorted bottom fish. Their trip back was pretty bumpy but all in all they had a great day. Stuart Mckinnon and Allan Philliskirk went for a run down to the reefs off Pera Head to score some nice Coral Trout off the bottom. Darren Lee went out on Friday to chase Billfish and only got the one small Black Marlin, however he did see a free-jumping sailfish. There have been a few of the Weipa Billfish Club members fishing the club point score but most trolled all day for very little results on Billfish but the Mackerel, Barracuda and Cobia put a few bends in rods for these intrepid anglers. Kerrs Reef out of Mapoon has a few Mackerel and some good bottom fish for anyone prepared to drag their boat up there. The Mission River bridge is still the shining star of the
