Santa brings cheer to Weipa
FESTIVE CHEER: Pictured with Santa in Weipa Woolworths last week are NAIDOC planning committee members: back - Delwyn Williams, Lucy Warren, Yvette Carter and Tracey Jia; front - Priscilla Raleigh, Cherie Woodham and Bianca Graham.
WEIPA received a little holiday cheer when Santa Claus visited Woolworths last Thursday night and Saturday morning. Santa had many overjoyed children visit who told him their Christmas wishes, and made sure he knew how well-behaved the children in Weipa are. The Western Cape NAIDOC planning committee would like to thank all those parents and children who came out to participate in our fundraising event and had a photo taken with Santa. Western Cape NAIDOC planning committee member, Priscilla Raleigh said the support from the community and Woolworths was instrumental in fundraising for NAIDOC celebrations. “This could not have happened without support from the very accommodating staff at Woolworths and families over the last week,” Ms Raleigh said. “We are extremely pleased that we could give a little something back to the families for their support. “The Western Cape NAIDOC planning committee would lastly like to thank and acknowledge Santa for coming all this way and bringing joy to the community.” The photo packages that were ordered will be sent out over the coming week. For further information on NAIDOC week events or if you would like to get involved in the planning, please contact Priscilla Raleigh (4749 7407) or Megan Skelton (4082 4429).

Spring clean for cyclone season NOW is the time for Weipa residents to clean out their gutters, trim trees and tidy up yards. With the cyclone and wet season fast approaching, it is essential for every family to be prepared with emergency kits and household plans. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Electrical Services acting superintendent, Dan Kruckow, said people living in cycloneprone areas should plan ahead, act early and have a recovery plan outlined. “It is important that people can provide for themselves and their families for up to three days if power and water supplies are disrupted,” Mr Kruckow said. “Storms can often bring down power lines, so it is important residents stay well away. “Always assume fallen power lines are live and dangerous, and report them immediately by phoning 000.

They have released an official statement stating that the bones are ‘historical’. Well, yes, that is a relief. I would hate to think that they were not historical, and were

in daily use by someone. The next question is - just how historical? Historical as in an Egyptian pharaoh, or historical as in a politician’s election promise? Who knows, and when will we find out? In the meantime, I am racking my brain for anyone who hasn’t been around recently, anyone I don’t see but don’t miss. Perhaps one of our older citizens has disappeared and no-one noticed. I must ask around at the bowls club. They ought to know. But then - the bones were on the north shore, and that’s not easy to get to. If you got confused and wandered off, you wouldn’t end up over there. They could belong to a complete stranger, say a wandering
greenie, searching our beaches for politically incorrect coconut palms. Perhaps he poisoned his last palm tree and then died happy in the knowledge that he had left Australia that little bit purer. I wonder who it could be? Unless, of course, it is Leichhardt at last. That’s it - it must be Liechhardt. Imagine the frustration of travelling so far and then finding yourself on the wrong bank of the Endeavour crocodile farm. All he needed was a lift to the fleshpots of Cooktown. He probably sat there for days, trying to get a signal on his mobile phone and failing every time. At least that only happened to him once. It happens to me all the time.

Western Cape College graduates off to a flying start THE Western Cape College class of 2012 celebrated the completion of their high school studies in style recently, with many of the students already well on their way to fulfilling their career dreams. Many of the graduating class have chosen where they will start the next chapter in their lives, including applying for local traineeships, apprenticeships and even making the leap to relocate for university studies. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and the Western Cape College have been working in partnership since 2006 to build on local talent, through school-to-work pathways and school-based programmes to encourage and prepare local students for careers in our business. From this year’s graduating class, two students’ dreams of careers in engineering are one step closer with Karo Cardelli and Jeremy Davidson recently awarded scholarships worth $2,500 each. Mr Cardelli has enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology and Mr Davidson in a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s acting human resources manager, Kelly Morrissey said these scholarships provide a financial boost to the students and their families. “By living remote we are challenged in terms of further study options, and these scholarships provide some financial assistance and support the transition as students move somewhere new to study on-campus,” Ms Morrissey said. “These scholarships allow us to invest in Weipa’s future as the students are provided with the opportunity to come back and work on site during their holidays as a part of our Vacation Programme.” Western Cape College principal, Leon Proud said that the Rio Tinto Alcan scholarships are competitively sought after by each year’s graduating class as they provide the

initial support needed to transition into the first year of university. “These scholarships are not only an integral component of our partnership with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa in building our local talent, but they provide a great opportunity for the individual recipients and their families,” Mr Proud said. Past recipient and now Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Civil Engineering graduate, Michelle Radlof used her 2008 scholarship to study a Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology. Throughout her studies, Michelle participated in Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Vacation Programme and was fast-tracked into a permanent full-time on site through the Graduate Programme. “The financial assistance this scholarship provided me was fantastic, but also the opportunity to come back and complete handson work experience in my relevant field,” Ms Radlof said. “The opportunity to partake in Rio Tinto Alcan’s Vacation Programme and receive a taste of the real world and work alongside qualified professionals was priceless. “The insights and practical understanding I gained during my end-of-year semester break, I could have never achieved sitting inside a classroom,” she said. The annual scholarships support local students financially who want to pursue a career in Geology, Environment, Engineering (various fields), Communications, Human Resources, Information Technology, Archaeology, Accounting, Anthropology and Science (metallurgy, chemistry). “The high calibre of applicants this year made the decision a very tough one,” Ms Morrissey said. WESTERN Cape Bulletin readers Ross Dawson and Ali Scott sent in the photo below of crocodile tracks on Rocky Point Beach as a warning to people that there is a crocodile actively accessing this area. The photo was taken at approximately 6am on Monday, December 10 while Ross and Ali were walking along the beach. The couple have been in Weipa for around 12 months and have spotted what they believed to be a two-and-a-half metre croc in the water several times at the beach, but said it was the first time they had seen tracks on the beach. The tracks can be seen going up the beach, onto the rocks, and then returning back into the water. The Rocky Point Beach is not only attractive to beachcombers and walkers, but has recently become popular as a night-time recreation setting. A timely warning that crocodiles do indeed inhabit our river systems, so always remain cautious around the water’s edge.

Graduates tread the teaching pathway Around 50 very excited Indigenous students graduated from diploma and certificate-level education courses in november thanks to the remote Area Teacher Education Program (rATEP) including local students Tari Sagigi, Sharume Creed. A program designed to deliver training to people in remote communities, RATEP is a Queensland communitybased program in its 22nd year of operation and a joint initiative of Education Queensland, James Cook University and Tropical North Q u e e n s l a n d TA F E (TNQT). TNQT Institute director Joann Pyne said the graduates had been able to remain in their communities while they

Not enough pets for a permanent vet service?
Dangerous intersections should be widened I WOULD like to bring to the attention of the community, and the regulatory bodies, the intersections on McLeod Drive. This road is a heavy vehicle bypass road which I believe does not meet the requirement for which it is intended, due to being too narrow to allow safe passage between heavy vehicles and any other vehicles that are stationary at the intersection. Both intersections need to be widened to allow safe passage for all road users. There was an incident this week where a prime mover and trailer collided with a light vehicle, resulting in damage to both vehicles. Even though it was a low-speed collision, both drivers were distraught, as
ALL my life I have known about pet registration and have always had my dogs registered. All my life, if my pet needed urgent care there was always a veterinarian available. Now that I have come to Weipa, I am told that there are not enough pets here to warrant a permanent, full-time vet. Rest in peace Jess. The intersection of McLeod Drive and Central Avenue.
the light vehicle operator was carrying her son to school at the time. Needless to say this incident highlights the intersections are poorly designed and remediation work to widen both intersections is essential. Golf Links Stage 2, when finished, will have more vehicles using these intersections and the safety of all road users is paramount. Heavy vehicles are utilised to service Andoom

JUDAS was a traitor to Jesus, but this was no surprise to Jesus as he already told his disciples that one of them was a traitor. This caused a bit of soul-searching on the part of the disciples, worrying that somehow they had let down their Lord, perhaps by something they said. But Judas knew. However, John in his gospel says that the Lord was quite clear as to who the traitor was by dipping a piece of bread in their communal plate and handing it to Judas.

Read the gospel of John Ch 13 vs 21-30 and take note of verse 26. “Jesus answered, “I will dip some bread in the sauce and give it to him; he is the man. So he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.” As the Lord was sitting there with his loyal disciples, no doubt he would have thought on the fact that it was close now, close to finish carrying out the Master Plan of God his Father. He had left the glory of the heavenlies, (at what we
celebrate as Christmas Day today), came down to Earth as a child of a virgin Jewish girl, grew up and taught people the true meaning of God’s words, and lived a sinless life. He was about to die in order that reconciliation could take place between God’s created beings and Himself. Next issue we will be reading different aspects of what Christmas is really all about from different church leaders. The Lord be glorified. – Rev Michael Connolly

Fishermen rescued after boat capsize THE Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) coordinated the rescue of three fishermen off the coast of Weipa on Wednesday morning, December 5 after their fishing vessel sank. The men issued a Mayday radio call at around 5.30am which was picked up by the REEF Vessel Tracking Service and forwarded to AMSA’s Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra. A short time after making the Mayday call, the men activated their emergency beacon, alerting AMSA to their location, 60 nautical miles north of Weipa. A rescue helicopter from Horn
Island arrived at the scene a short time later and winched the men from their life raft. They received medical attention at Thursday Island. The men were well prepared with the necessary safety equipment and by raising the alarm via radio and activating their beacon, authorities were able to attend the scene quickly. Before heading out on the water this summer, AMSA reminds people to ensure they have purchased a GPS-equipped beacon and have registered the beacon with AMSA. This significantly reduces the response time for search and rescue agencies.

Being a confident investor In recent years, with the global economy going through a relatively chaotic phase, we’ve seen plenty of screaming headlines like “$40 billion wiped off Australian share market in one day!” “Markets brace as crisis in Europe flares up again”. In the face of all these apparent disasters, it’s very easy to panic and make snap decisions. That’s only natural – it’s also one of the worst things you can do. Douglas Adams put it very neatly on the cover of the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, which read ‘Don’t Panic!’. When we see share prices plummeting due to the latest apparent economic catastrophe, our immediate reaction is likely to be “I must do something before it’s too late!” So what do we typically do? We withdraw our investments and reinvest the money in a term deposit. Then, when prices pick up again, we cash in the term deposit and buy shares again. What are we really doing when we do this? Often the result is that we have repurchased our shares at a higher price than we sold them – exactly the opposite of a desirable outcome. If you’re serious about investing you’ll have already worked out a long-term plan with your financial planner; a plan designed to ride out the lows and highs of the investment markets; a plan that covers investments, superannuation and insurance. Your financial planner will show you how you can diversify your
investments so that when one class of assets goes down (eg shares); another may well go up (eg bonds). The key is choosing a mix of investments that suits your goals and where you are in your life, and then sticking with these investments through the market highs and lows or until your objectives change. If you are aiming to be a confident investor, try this: 1. Work out your financial goals, then ask a Financial Planner to help you plan how to achieve them and how to effectively manage your tax. 2. Invest small amounts regularly and consistently, regardless of share prices. 3. Don’t panic – if you’ve set yourself up with a properly diversified range of investments, they will manage themselves without the need for you to intervene. Confidence comes from making a plan and sticking to it.

NEWS Changes to wet season traffic management DURING the 2012-13 wet season, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will use load limits to manage heavy vehicle movements on unsealed sections of the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR). The load limits are necessary for the safety of road users and to prevent damage to saturated road formation and road infrastructure. Load limits will be reduced according to the condition of the road, most likely: 40 tonne 20 tonne 5 tonne. Unless road closures are required for specific safety reasons, the PDR will remain open for high-clearance vehicles under five tonne throughout the wet season. TMR will provide up-to-date information about road conditions on the PDR via its Traffic and Travel Information Services: • www.131940.qld.gov.au website • 13 19 40 telephone hotline • @131940_FNNQ Twitter feed (NQ and FNQ regions only).
Restricted Road Use Notices (signage) Below is an example of the Restricted Road Use Notice that will be in use on the PDR during the upcoming wet season.
Motorists who fail to comply with the directions on these signs will incur significant penalties. Approval to drive past a Restricted Road Use Notice for essential travel • Single use permit – To enable essential travel, such as medical emergencies or delivery of urgent supplies, TMR will issue single-use permits for heavy vehicles to bypass Restricted Road Use Notices on the PDR. Permit applications are free of charge and can be made through the TMR regional office or Queensland Police Service. • Seasonal permit – TMR understands that the PDR is a lifeline
to some of Queensland’s most remote communities and will also consider applications for permits for heavy vehicles to bypass Restricted Road Use Notices for the duration of the wet season for essential travel. • Permit Conditions – Safety remains thedepartment’s foremost priority, and every applicant will be required to comply with strict safety conditions, including vehicle type and weight restrictions, before their application can be considered. TMR and QPS will also retain the authority to override access permits if the road is deemed unsafe to drive. A full list of conditions is available on the permit application form. No Entry regulatory signs If necessary, TMR or QPS may use the following signs to close a road to all traffic. Under no circumstances shall a motorist drive past a ‘No Entry’ sign.
Motorists who fail to comply with the directions on these signs will incur significant penalties.

winds (about 20km/hr) have helped sustain fires that were likely started by lightning and human activity. About half of the savanna woodlands on Cape York burn either every year or so, typically late in the dry season. Dried grasses, which receive ample sunshine and rain during the wet season, provide the bulk of the fuel. As the dry season progresses, trees also drop loads of leaves and twigs that help fuel fires. Key grasses and trees in the region include Sorghum, Eucalyptus, and Corymbia. Despite the frequency of the burning, wildfires on Cape York are gen-
erally less severe than in southern Australia because fungi, bacteria, and other decomposers that thrive in the region continuously break dried grass and leaf litter down. Fewer decomposers live in southern Australia, making it possible for leaf litter and other fuel to build up for decades and prime the landscape for extremely destructive fires. Summer bushfires near densely-populated areas in southern Australia attract the most public attention, but the continent’s largest and most frequent fires actually occur in the spring in the tropical savannas of northern Australia.

Joining forces to protect Cape York IN a first for Queensland, Traditional Owners and nonIndigenous Australians have joined forces to protect vast areas of country on Cape York from aggressive wild fires. The groups have combined traditional knowledge with western science to achieve the greatest outcome for the environment. The Fire Co-ordination Plan has conducted early-season progressive burns to prevent later season, aggressive wild fires which damage the landscape and impact the rich, biodiverse region. “Research shows that traditional early season burns have maintained the rich biodiversity and minimised green house gas omissions through a controlled approach,” said Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF), operations manager, Aaron Crosbie. “The fire management plan has seen a long line of benefits, not least of which is safety, but the program has created cultural, environmental and economic benefits for the people of Cape York, “This is ‘Closing The Gap’ at its very best, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people working together to protect the land they both live and work on with no fear or favour. “ It is authentic and natural. Solid neighbourly bonds and friendships have formed,” Mr Crosbie said. This fire management approach, which started two years ago supports on-

going management activities of the Kowanyama Aboriginal Land and Natural Resource Management Office which now employs two full-time Traditional Owners as rangers for the fire program, and it has brought these rangers back to their homeland, to a remote stretch of open landscape in Western Cape York that was previously unoccupied. Business partnerships have also evolved from the program. Traditional Owners and nonindigenous pastoralists are in talks about joint ventures on a whole raft of projects including
joint musters for next season. “This kind of Indigenous and non-Indigenous on-country partnership is unheard of,” Mr Crosbie said. “It is so good to see that from this program, joint ventures are eventuating and on their own they have identified that they can work together long term, and financially benefit from one another in a sustainable manner. “As the program leader, it has been very rewarding to watch the process from inception,” Mr Crosbie said. The program has been so successful that even large

corporates are showing strong interest in investing in the expansion of the programs activities. “The private investment will be welcomed as it will ensure that this program is ongoing and creates a solid employment base for Traditional Owners as Aboriginal land managers who can protect and manage their land and develop their skill sets. “It will also mean potentially more collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, which will in turn develop the economy of this remote region,” said Mr Crosbie.

INVITATIONS to Christmas parties pop up left, right and centre at this time a year, and hardly anyone can maintain their weight or keep losing weight during this merry time. And for the grand finale at the end of the month, the feasts become even bigger and usually the alcohol flows more regularly, after we have been conditioned with our previous, work, club, kindy, friends and/or partners Christmas parties. Here are some of my ideas to keep you healthy this festive season. Here are some of my ideas: Intake and output First of all remember the law of energy input and output. In order to not put on any weight, know the calories you eat and drink, and the effort it takes to burn these calories while exercising or moving otherwise like gardening, walking, etc. You will be amazed what goes into your body during the festive season. Track it with a diary and realise how easy it is to go over your suggested daily intake of sugars, fats and calories. Keep calm The festive season can be quite stressful for some. Shopping, organising, decorating, taking the kids to parties and attending parties yourself can be quite stressful. Make sure you take dedicated me time to relax, walk, meditate or go to a yoga class. Breathe, keep calm, and centre yourself so you have enough
energy to keep going. Also, make sure you get sufficient sleep. When you are sleep deprived or stressed you may crave sweets, salty and fatty food, more so than as if you have a good night’s rest. Sweet treats Stay away from sweets - not only do they come with a lot of excessive calories, but they can also have an effect on your mood and energy levels. The sugar spikes your energy and mood levels up, before letting them plunge down again. This will make you reach out for the sweet hit again and again, make your children hyperactive and you or any of your loved ones grumpy. The festive season is a sweet time with lollies and chocolate luring you everywhere you go. It may be a wise idea not to stock any sweets at home. You and your kids will be bombarded with sweets anyhow, at work, at friend’s homes and at parties. Do you really need to stock up at home? Drink water In order to keep your metabolism functioning properly water is required. Sweet drinks, sweets and alcohol will dehydrate your body. When you are drinking more water you may find that you are less hungry and feel that you are snacking less. Drink one glass of water 20 minutes before a meal and 20 minutes after. Keep drinking a minimum of two litres of water a day - this is especially important in a hot climate like Weipa. Always alternate an alcoholic drink with some water as this will help to reduce the hangover and hopefully make you a bit more cheerful the morning after. Keep exercising Even though most sports clubs are breaking for the festive season, you can still head out for a walk, go for a swim, ride the bike or exercise at home with your friends and family. Dance your life away at the Christmas party, play Twister, do the gardening together, and enjoy a lot of time off with your loved ones to invigorate relationships. Thank you all for being great and loyal readers of The Goodlife column this year. May we all continue or start our journey in 2013 joyfully and healthy with some weight loss challenges in Weipa to come. Feel free to contact me with topics you would like to hear about in the new year, and drop me an email at jeany.schall@goodline.com.au
FEATURE STORY
Buthu shoe drive By Hannah Gamble
My name is Hannah I am 11 years old and I am now living in Hervey Bay. For the first six months of this year our family and I lived in Weipa, and I was in year 6 at Western Cape College. My teacher was Mrs Glenn and I really loved being in her class, along with all the other students who were my friends. I made a lot of friends and when it came time to leave I was really sad because Weipa was such a fun place. When we got back to Hervey Bay I really missed Weipa. I wanted to try and do something nice to say thank you to Mrs Glenn, my friends in Year 6 and for the school, so they would know how much I missed them and that they were in my thoughts. I came up with the idea of doing a shoe drive. While we were at Weipa we found out that our shoes wore out pretty quickly because of the wet season weather, with the mud and water and also because of the fun we had exploring around the bush and beaches. I also saw that some of the other students came to school without shoes sometimes, and I was told that some had trouble affording them. My dad worked in the RBC (Responsible Behaviour Classroom) at the

when I told her about wanting to do a shoe drive, and my reasons, she wanted to know more. I told her that during the wet season the road to Cairns is cut for months and that Weipa becomes isolated, and things like shoes, food and fuel cost more because of freight. I told her of my idea that it would help Western Cape College staff and students, and the nearby communities, by us doing a shoe drive. I thought that the shoes could then be kept at the RBC to give to students when they needed them, rather than having to miss out on school and wasted learning time. Mrs Hammond happily agreed to help out and made it our Mission week objective. Initially I had hoped that we would get maybe about 20 pairs of used shoes in a good condition, but thanks to Ms Hammond’s help we got a lot more than that. Students and staff at Xavier that heard about our Weipa stories wanted to know how they could help even more, and so they started buying brand new shoes and socks to donate to our shoe drive. About 90 pairs of shoes were donated in total. People even came to us asking for sizes and styles so we ended up with a lot of different shoes like male and

College and he would sometimes have to talk to students about not wearing shoes, as it was part of the uniform for the school and for student safety. My dad sometimes had to take some students home to find shoes because they didn’t have any on, and this meant they were missing out on learning. I now go to Xavier Catholic College in Hervey Bay and my school house team is called Buthu. Our local aboriginal tribe are the Butchulla people and Buthu is their word for Dolphin. Our school has a strong bond with the Traditional Owners here and this made me miss Weipa, as it was the same up there. Every year our team have a Buthu Mission Week, where our Buthu house mates all do something to help those less fortunate, or another good cause. I spoke to our Buthu head of house, Ms Tami Hammond, and
female joggers from Prep size to size 13s, basketball boots and work boots. When we told people about how much Weipa people love playing football we even had some pairs of football boots donated. Ms Hammond also organised a school disco were you could either pay $5 to get in or you could donate a new pair of socks to go with the shoes. It was so much fun, and people didn’t just bring in single pairs, they brought in 10 or 20 packs, so we also sent up over 100 pairs of socks of all different sizes and styles to go with the shoes. Some of the used shoes needed new laces and a small clean so we contacted a friend of ours who is the manager of the Weipa Woolworths, Ms Jenny Everist. Jenny was so happy to help out that she arranged for the local Woolworths manager in Hervey Bay to donate all the new laces. He was also very

interested in talking to my dad about catching Barramundi and is now planning to visit Weipa himself to fish. He also donated some packing tape and extra socks to help our project. We ended up filling three full packing boxes with shoes and another half box of socks and laces. When we thought about how to get the package of shoes to Weipa at no cost to the Western Cape College we found out that there are a lot of close ties between Xavier College and Weipa. My Dad spoke to Mrs Leesa Kennedy who has kids at Xavier and she is related to the Goodline Kennedys in Weipa. Mrs Kennedy was very helpful with ideas, and donating shoes and socks. Mrs Kennedy offered to help with transporting the shoes to Weipa, but we were able to use Woolworths and Toll Marine who barged them around to Weipa for us. The Buthu house and Xavier Catholic College parents and students hope that the shoes and socks really do help the Western Cape College kids. I would like to thank my Dad,

As the tears started to well up in my eyes, I had to ask “why now, why me, why us, surely it can’t be over?” but it was. The 2012 Weipa Dirt Kart season had come to an end, and with it the reality that Saturday nights will not be the same for the next six months. So as I write this article with a heavy heart and lighter pocket, I would like to recap for you all, and take the opportunity to thank those valued supporters who have been a part of this North Queensland juggernaut in 2012. The season for many of the valued members started way back in February, when the canteen was completely refurbished and general maintenance performed at the racetrack. This would continue for most weekends up until the official season kick-off on May 12 with the first round of the Enzed Hose Doctor Top End Dirt Kart Series run. We would see upwards of 24 drivers race at all three rounds with some absolutely fantastic racing which would lead us directly into the first round of
the Hastings Deering NQ Dirt Kart Series. This would also be run over three nights and be fiercely contested by all. In the middle of the Hastings Deering three-round series, the club would conduct its traditional two-day anniversary meeting with the second day raced under sunshine. The motocross club would also race at the motorsport complex this day and expose many new spectators to what racing in Weipa looks like. During July, three men would take a journey to the Northern Territory to compete in the NT Dirt Kart Titles. Although no victories would be gained, Ben West, Justin Hyytinen and Dan Metcalfe would leave a lasting effect on many new found friends in the karting fraternity, that would lead them to win the ‘best attitude’ award for the title. They also had a trip to remember and one they still can’t talk about even to this day. (What happens on the road stays on the road.) The official season would end with trophy night on November 3, the 22-lap classic on
November 24 and our break-up meeting last Saturday night. On behalf of the Weipa Dirt Kart committee, our valued members and helpers, we would like to thank the following people for their help during the year: James, the Enzed Hose Doctor for his valued support of our first three-race series; Alex Knight from Hastings Deering for their valued support of our second three-race series; and the staff at NQCEC for the use of your grader, water truck and staff to assist with track repair. Also the members of the Weipa Motocross Club for their help at various stages during the year, and also Rio Tinto for your support when we desperately needed it. To Giembra and Stretch from the Western Cape Bulletin – not only did you print all of the insane stuff I wrote, but the photos and flexibility you had with the Dirt Kart Club has been nothing short of fantastic. To the drivers, all 30 of you that competed during the year. To watch our juniors improve so much during the year was
the best, and to have another 15 drivers start racing thoughout the year just makes sure our club goes from strength to strength. And most of all, thank you to the ladies that assisted with the running of our canteen, and of course to Tia Batterham for doing just about everything, and looking after us drivers so we could race. Your help has been imperative throughout the year, and hopefully we haven’t ticked you all off so that you don’t want to come back next year! In closing, I will now send Santa my Christmas list that not only includes go kart parts, and to win Gold Lotto, but with a plan to make 2013 the best year ever for the Weipa Dirt Kart Club. The planning has already begun for the running of the inaugural 2013 Queensland Dirt Kart Title with what could be 100 drivers travelling to our piece of paradise in the Gulf. ‘Til next year, just remember, it’s more satisfying to race in the dirt then play in it.
– Over and out, Mowlesy

WHAT’S ON... Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com
Lack of rain means ordinary fishing ANOTHER week has gone by and there still hasn’t been any serious rain, and the fishing has been pretty ordinary. There have been a small showing of Grunter and they will get better when we get some rain. The ones that are being caught are biting on live Prawns if you can find them. The Mission River still has some small Queenfish taking live Mullet, and you can also have a chance with Blue Salmon at night. I haven’t had any reports of any one getting any Crabs but that doesn’t mean there is none to be caught. Out around the mouths of the rivers there are some large Queenfish rounding up the hordes of baitfish that are schooling up at the moment. I tried up in the creeks but only found a few small Jacks and Trevally. Over at Red Beach live bait has been the downfall of a few Queenies as well as a few Bream. Evans Landing at night has been holding a few big fish on live Squid, and during the day droves of little Queenies are chasing the schools of bait fish. Up at Mapoon, James
Prentice (who just got back from boarding school In Townsville), fishing with his brother John and dad Tony, caught a huge Mackerel after only 10 minutes of trolling. They finished the day with a mixed bag of Coral Trout, Tuskers, Cod and topped the day off with a 25lb Cobia. Fishing off Weipa would be the pick at the moment with the reefs producing some spectacular results. I fished the leads with Dan Ruteme and found some small Nannygai, small Cod and a big Bludger Trevally. We then moved down to a small reef and found the kindergarten fish with little Tuskers, small Trout and small Cod. What a difference a day makes - Stewart Mckinon, fishing out of Jason Owen’s new Hooker bagged out on Nannygai and got a mixed bag of Trout and Reds. They then moved out to the Nine Mile looking for Billfish and only to find schools of Tuna and no Billfish. On their way back to Weipa they spotted some big Manta Rays. Until next week smooth seas, calm winds and tight lines. – Cheers, China
