ing to deliver half a million parcels across the country this week and Bill Lonergan and his staff have certainly processed their fair share at the Weipa Post Office. With the growing popularity of on-line shopping the number of packages to arrive in Weipa has in-
creased significantly in the last couple of years, and Bill is expecting this week to be the busiest week of the year for the local office. An additional three million parcels were delivered around Australia in December 2011, and with record numbers of Aussies doing
their Christmas shopping on-line similar growth is expected this year. So spare a thought, and a kind word, for Santa’s little helpers here in Weipa, as they work their way through the mountains of packages destined for Christmas stockings.

QantasLink contract extended until December 2014
QANTASLINK has been granted an extension of the contract for the Cairns-Weipa regulated air route until the end of 2014, a decision, described by Weipa Town Authotity chairman Peter McCulkin, as akin to the hit TV series Yes Minister. “It had been the widely held view that the Weipa to Cairns route, currently ‘regulated’ and contracted to QantasLink until March, 2013, would be reviewed. “We confirmed with the Minister’s office only late last week that in fact negotiations has been concluded with an extension to the contract until December, 2014,” Mr McCulkin said. All five QantasLink regulated routes in Queensland have been granted the 21-month extension. Mr McCulkin added: “I couldn’t believe that the government would make this sort of deal, firstly without the knowledge of the local Member David Kempton, but, more importantly, without any consultation with this community. “Deregulation of the route brings with it the opportunity for competition between carriers on the Weipa to Cairns route. “As the CEO of Virgin Australia John Borghetti was reported to have told the Courier Mail last week ‘deregulation would bring lower fares and deliver better access for regional communities to essential services’. Currently travellers pay top rates to fly to regional centres.” The Courier Mail further reports Mr Borghetti as saying he was also dismayed to learn that the contract had been extended to the end of 2014. “The government has every right to make a decision, but the people of Weipa (and Roma) deserve an explanation as to why they are going to have to pay fares 20 per cent more than they need to be” he said. A Qantas spokeswoman told the Western Cape Bulletin: “The five regional routes we currently serve including Cairns-Weipa were awarded through a competitive tender process and we will be ready to tender for them again when they expire. continued page 2

QantasLink granted extension of Cairns-Weipa route from page 1
“The Queensland Government regulates 10 rural and remote routes for air traffic in Queensland. QantasLink operates half of them: • Cairns-Horn Island; • Cairns-Weipa; • Brisbane-Longreach/ Barcaldine/Blackall; • Brisbane-Roma/Charleville; and • Townsville–Cloncurry– Mount Isa. “Qantas has been advised that these routes will be retendered by December 31, 2014. “Qantas does not receive a subsidy to operate any of these routes,” she said. Mr McCulkin said: “Yes, I am annoyed and frustrated – so should the people of Weipa and neighbouring communities be for not even being considered to take part in the discussion. “The more I dig for answers, the more I see a classic but more bizarre episode of Yes Minister.”

WTA chairman, Peter McCulkin described the QantasLink contract extension as akin to the TV series “Yes Minister”.
Mr McCulkin said: “WTA first got wind of a ‘deal’ being done between the government bureaucrats and the current carrier QantasLink when we met with Mr Kempton and Assistant Minister for Transport Steve Minnikin here in Weipa two weeks ago. “The WTA has given an undertaking to keep the community appraised of further action by government in rela-
tion to the review of the Weipa to Cairns route, and rejects out of hand the opinion aired to Virgin Australia executives by the Queensland Transport bureaucrat responsible that ‘the communities would be delighted with the decision to extend the existing contracts’. “Yes Minister – not!” The Qantas spokeswoman said: “Qantas has a 92-year history in Queensland and we
have a rock solid commitment to this state. “Qantas prides itself on offering an excellent service on all its routes and being part of the regional communities we serve.” Qantas operates a total of 95,000 seats to destinations across Queensland every week. This includes services to 22 regional ports in Queensland (five of which are regulated).

Les gets his wheels in time for Christmas
AN overwhelmed Les Borthwick received his muchneeded mobility scooter in Cairns last Thursday after the community generously responded to an appeal launched by Federal MP Warren Entsch. Les, 76, went into Cairns Base Hospital a year ago for a knee replacement, but complications have forced him to undergo seven operations. During the most recent operation, a metre-long steel rod was inserted in his right leg, meaning he is now unable to straighten or put any weight on it. Les’ son Rob Borthwick and his best mate Graham Jonsen contacted Mr Entsch in October as they were devastated at what Les had been through, as in addition to the seven operations he had also caught serious Golden Staph infections and a tropical disease requiring isolation. The appeal was launched and funds raised have helped to pay for the Shoprider Rocky 4 mobility scooter, which has an RRP of $5700 and is one of the
larger, most robust machines on the market. Les was quick to jump on his new wheels and get a driving lesson with Cairns Scooter Shed owner Greg Martin, who recommended and organised the machine. Mr Borthwick said he was looking forward to regaining his mobility as having the scooter means he can travel to shops and facilities that are nearby to his current accommodation in Gordonvale. “It will also be great for when Les returns to Weipa,” Mr Entsch added. “It’s perfect for Weipa’s rugged terrain, has a good battery life and means he’ll be able get around the roads and bike paths with no difficulty. “This is going to mean a lot for his independence and my thanks go to the Far Northern community, especially the Weipa locals who contributed to this appeal,” Mr Entsch said. It is likely that Les will need to remain in Cairns for a further six to eight months, undergoing

The Koolkan Early Childhood Centre received a welcome makeover with new windows, doors, cupboards, airconditioning and improvements to the outdoor play area, including fencing. Queensland Senator Jan McLucas said the refurbished centre provides a safer environment for children to play and learn. “Children at the Koolkan Early Childhood Centre in Aurukun are now enjoying their new sandpit under the custom-made shade structure which allows more time for outdoor play during the wet season,” Senator McLucas said. “Koolkan is the sole provider of child Thursday Island

Sand-covered fire causes second-degree burns By Giembra Busmer
A dAy trip to Billy’s Lagoon last month ended in disaster for a young Weipa family when their 18-month old son sustained second-degree burns after walking through a covered campfire. Harlan Gannon and his mum, Tina Welch and dad, Lee Gannon had gone to the popular swimming spot for a picnic lunch, and were packing the car to leave when Harlan went for one last swim with his uncle. “He ran out of the water towards me and ran straight through the buried campfire, which was only about two metres from the edge of the creek,” Tina said. “We had no idea it was there as it had been covered by sand – obviously while it was still hot. “There were no rocks or anything to mark it as a campfire site.” Harlan burnt the soles of both of his feet and sustained burns to his right leg as he fell on the fire. “He was lucky he wasn’t injured further as his uncle managed to grab him before he fell completely into the fire,” Tina said. After soaking Harlan’s feet and leg in the creek the fam-
ily rushed him to the Weipa Hospital. Later that evening he transferred to the Townsville children’s burns unit by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), where he remained for two weeks. “The staff at the Weipa Hospital said there was a rising number of patients with burns like Harlan’s from people who are careless with camp fires,” Tina said. “I really wanted to share his story in the hope that people will be more careful when putting out camp fires. The fire he walked through was so close to the water – it could have been put out properly, not covered with sand, which only keeps the heat of the fire in.” It was three weeks before Harlan was able to walk again, and he may never regain sensitivity in the soles of his feet again, but he is up and about now and happy not to be wearing his “burn socks” any longer. Tina and Lee were full of praise for the staff at the Weipa Hospital, the Townsville children’s burns unit and the RFDS. “Our whole family will be donating to the RFDS this Christmas – it is one way we can thank them for the assistance and care they gave us,” Tina said.
Up and about again: Harlan Gannon with his dad Lee. Photo: Giembra Busmer.
The most important thing to remember is DON’T cover a campfire with sand - the fire will retain it’s heat for many hours and is also disguised. Always use water to put out a campfire when you have finished with it. Any kind of water can be used - dirty water, salt water, creek water, bottled water... Where possible use a fireplace such as a barbecue pit or build a surround out of large rocks.

Island & Cape helps celebrate CYAAA awards ISLAND & Cape proudly supported the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy (CYAAA) Aurukun Campus annual awards, which were held earlier this month. The awards, held every December to celebrate the school’s Christmas holiday break-up, celebrated the achievements of the school in 2012. The annual Island & Cape boarding student encouragement award was given to Year 11 student Topsy Bowenda, who received a new laptop computer donated by the wholesale and retail operator. Island & Cape retail operations manager Craig Oxlade said Topsy fully deserved the award for her efforts at school. “She’s worked hard all year, has been really consistent, and has a good positive attitude towards her future,” Mr Oxlade said. “She’s also been really supportive to new boarding students, and we think she’ll find her new laptop useful as she enters Year 12.” Mr Oxlade said principal Patrick Mallard, his team and the students also deserved plenty of plaudits. “We would really like to congratulate Patrick and his team of dedicated teachers, who have had a very successful year with great outcomes,” Mr Oxlade said. “We thoroughly enjoyed the awards night, especially the school band, and we look forward to the new year and more exciting ventures with Patrick and his hard-working staff.”

Community Expression of Interest for the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) is seeking expressions of interest from communities who would like the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) delivered. DEEWR is expanding this program to 50 new communities, with an emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. HIPPY is a two-year home-based program that works with parents and children in the year before the child commences formal school. It gives parents and carers the confidence to be their child’s first teacher and be engaged in their child’s learning.
The choir students of Western Cape College Weipa entertained the shoppers at Woolworths on Saturday morning, singing a range of traditional and contemporary Christmas carols, accompanied by Mrs Dakuna on guitar, Ms Hall on keyboard and Mrs Berry. Saturday morning shoppers were delighted to hear the choir singing such beautiful songs, and were impressed by the singing talent of the students.
If you would like more information on having HIPPY in your community, please visit the DEEWR website at www.deewr.gov.au/home-interactionprogram-parents-and-youngsters-hippy or call (02) 6240 7308 for expression of interest details. OPINION
From the Chairman Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman
Key community projects update With the end of 2012 fast approaching i thought it was a good opportunity to bring you up to date with several key projects for the community being driven by the Weipa town Authority (WtA). Firstly, the Weipa Governance Working Group has met for the second time since April, with the State Government, RTA, Cook Shire and WTA very keen to be provided with the financial forecasts for a potential incorporation into Cook Shire. It is important to understand that this is the process mapped out over three years ago and follows the financial modelling for a Weipa ‘stand-alone’ Council; which proved to be clearly unsustainable on current financial modelling. However, 2013 could provide much needed alternate revenue streams for the WTA. The Weipa Community Plan continues to be our ‘blueprint’ for the future of the town. The Weipa 2020 Community Alliance; the implementation team drawn from the community, business and government, met for the first time recently with the intent of providing oversight of the implementation of the Plan in the
Funding is being sought to bitumen the road between Archer River and Weipa.
coming years. Both the State and Federal Governments have indicated they will play active roles as Alliance members, in particular a very proactive local Member, David Kempton. Finally, WTA has had very positive discussions with the Department of Infrastructure and Planning in relation to accessing 2013 Royalties to the Region funding in partnership with Cook Shire. The funding being sought is to seal the road between the Archer River and Weipa prior to commencement of construction on the South of Embley project. The WTA, Cook Shire and newly formed Cape York Local Tourism Organisation (LTO) have concerns for the Cape York tourism industry once quarried material starts to be transported from the Archer to the SOE
project site. A sealed road would alleviate any potential issues for visiting motorists, as well as contributing significantly to the eventual all weather access to Weipa via the Peninsula Development Road. We should be included in the next round of Expressions of Interest on the strength of our business case which we have already outlined in discussions with the department. The Deputy Premier’s comment to me when we last met, “If there is any town that would be eligible for Royalties to the Region, it would be Weipa”, adds weight to our case. 2013 promises to be a very busy year for the WTA, I hope that our work will continue to reap rewards for the community. I wish you all a Safe and Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2013.

Completing a thorough estate planning review is crucial for your peace of mind as well as the comfort and wellbeing of loved ones. It is also much more than just making a Will depending on your current financial and family situation. You might also need to review your superannuation nominations, discretionary trust deeds, any company documentation and powers of attorney. Here are some important areas to consider with examples and possible solutions: Allocation of your superannuation: In most super funds, the trustee decides who gets your superannuation when you die. Legislation requires the fund to pay your dependents or your estate. Example Mary, a divorcee wants to leave money to her children but not to her ex-spouse. She cannot be sure that the trustees of her superannuation fund won’t apportion part of her super to her ex-spouse. Possible solution Most superannuation funds allow you to nominate a Binding Death Benefit Nomination that will provide directions to the fund trustees as to how your death benefit is to be paid. Talk to your Financial Planner to ensure your superannuation benefits are in order. Providing money quickly for your dependents quickly: Upon death, your Will needs to be located, and, depending on your assets may need to be proven by the courts in a process called ‘obtaining probate’. This process can take many weeks; in the meantime, your estate assets may be frozen. Example David, the principal income earner dies. David’s family knows
that he has a Will, but can’t find it or other documentation they need for the funeral and to produce for the courts. In addition, an estranged child challenges the Will and delays distribution of assets. This delay in the distribution of assets may see the surviving spouse having insufficient money to live on. Possible solution Ensure you have all the necessary documents in a safe place and that the Executor of your Will knows where they are. To ensure your spouse is protected, it may be beneficial to hold some funds in joint names with your spouse so that funds can be accessed quickly. Has something changed in your life recently? Regularly reviewing and updating your Will is necessary to reduce problems which may arise and can affect your Will. Events which may trigger a need to review your Will include, marriage, divorce, a birth, a change in relationship, de-facto arrangements or the death of a person. Taxation and superannuation legislation are complex. Professional advice can help you ensure your beneficiaries receive their entitlements in the most taxeffective manner. For more information on addressing your estate planning needs and other financial services, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam. woodhouse@infocus.com.au. A LOT of us are inspired by the new year to set new goals and have good intentions to better ourselves or the world around us. This is a great thing, but believe me, changing habits and making lasting changes to your health, well-being and weight require much more than a resolution. We require belief, actions and dedication to the actions we are taking, or we are choosing not to take. Setting big goals is fine, if we have the dedication and discipline to follow them through. But most of us are better off setting small goals, and making small changes one at a time throughout the year to prevent us from being overwhelmed, and ending up failing and feeling miserable because of it. Going on a diet in the new year is a rather contradictive idea for weight loss in my opinion. If we are on a diet we will eventually get off it and return to our old habits. Creating new habits, such as starting to exercise, joining a sports club and trying out new healthy recipes is much more fun and encourages us to sustain the changes throughout the year. I suggest the opposite though when it comes to addictive habits. Sugar, diet drinks, cigarettes, caffeine and alcohol are best to quit once and for all and one at a time. If we are trying to give them up all at the same time as we are very likely to be overwhelmed by the withdrawal effects and are more likely to end up returning to all of them again. If you still drink alcohol most nights, I suggest you start with that. Most of us would have fuelled up the last time just before heading to bed on January 1. So there will be no need to drink for the rest of the month. This will allow your body to recover and get more energy. You will need less coffee, sugar and even your cigarette consumption will go down as you drink less. Ditch the next habit when you’re not struggling with the first ditched habit any more and so on. Eventually you can eliminate bad habits and find healthy habits along the way to replace them with. Give yourself time and be happy with small steps you achieve, and as 2014 approaches you can look at your achievements for the year, and be inspired by what you have achieved, rather than by a date that has been coming along every year,
and another resolution that starts, and is often forgotten by February. I will be here by your side to help you kick off the new year of 2013, and to give you some basic suggestions on how to set goals and achieve them, and of course to keep educating you about the insand-outs of health and well-being!
t!
Star
Four tips to make your resolutions last 1. Set goals that matter to you, and that make you willing to put the required effort in. Don’t make them just because it’s what you do in January. Be ready to commit. 2. Every resolution should have a plan to accomplish it. Don’t just vow to loose weight and/or change habits. Determine what steps you’ll need to take in order to achieve these goals. 3. Rather than making all-ornothing resolutions, build in milestones. For example, instead of attempting to run five kilometres every day, commit to exercising two to three times a week like walking, swimming or joining an exercise classes. Then you can aim to gradually increase intensity, frequency and/or duration. 4. Believe in your own ability to change. Consider that every day, people in the worst of circumstances decide to change their lives and actually do. If they can do it; you can! Whatever has happened in the past has no impact on what you can do with your future. Happy goal setting and have a happy and healthy New Year.

IMP on the look-out for next crop of marathon runners Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project is on the look-out for the next crop of marathon runners to tackle the 2013 New York Marathon. Are you, or do you know, an outstanding young Indigenous male or female aged between 18 and 30 who has the natural running ability and strong sense of determination to take on the training required to run a marathon? Are you committed to changing Indigenous Australia and promoting the importance of health and wellbeing in remote communities? No formal running experience is required, just the right attitude and a commitment to achieving your personal best. The Indigenous Marathon Project started in 2010 when De Castella took four young men from remote Australia to New York for the world famous marathon. The Project has since expanded with seven men and four women tackling the gruelling 42.195km race in 2011, and a team of six men and two women currently preparing for the Tokyo Marathon, after Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of the 2012 New York Marathon. De Castella said that while the main aim of the Project was to get the athletes across the finish line of the New York Marathon, running a marathon would show the athletes that they can achieve anything that they put their minds to. “To see the looks of complete joy and selfbelief on the faces of our athletes when they achieve what they once thought impossible is amazing, and for them to realize that they can in fact achieve anything they put their minds to is what the Project is all about,” he said. “Being part of IMP and running a marathon will open many doors and present many opportunities that will change the lives of not only the athletes themselves, but of their families, friends

Aussies love to holiday in the North THE number of Aussies holidaying in Tropical North Queensland increased 12 per cent to 809,000 in the year to September 2012 according to new figures released this week. Tourism Research Australia’s latest National Visitor Survey revealed a continuing surge in the number of Queenslanders and Australians choosing to holiday in Tropical North Queensland. Australians spent $1.7 billion on visits to Tropical North Queensland in the year to September 2012, eight per cent, or $132 million more than the previous year. There were more than 1.5 million Australian visitors to Tropical North Queensland in the year to September 2012, up 10 per cent. Visitors also stayed a total of 7.6 million nights, up four per cent on the previous year. Queenslanders holidaying in Tropical North Queensland were the main driver of the impressive results, increasing 30 per cent to 443,000 in the year to September 2012. The results also revealed many Australians opted to stay with friends and family when visiting the region, almost doubling to 323,000 in the year to September 2012. In other results, NSW residents ignited a love-affair with Tropical North Queensland in the year to September with the number travelling for a holiday increasing strongly to 169,000. More than 7.6 million Australians holidayed in Queensland in the year to September 2012 (up seven per cent), spending $6.4 billion on their visits (up nine per cent). Overall, 18 million Australians visited Queensland in the year to September 2012 (up five per cent) and spent $13.5 billion (up 12 per cent). Floods put sea turtles off breeding ENDANGERED marine turtles in Queensland still haven’t recovered from the extreme weather of early 2011, scientists say. AAP reports numbers of nesting green turtles near Cape York have fallen to the lowest level in almost four decades, nearly two years after floods and cyclones hit Queensland. D r C o l Li m p u s , t h e chief scientist of threatened species with Queensland’s Department of Environment and Heritage says something similar happened after floods hit the state during 1974, causing green turtle breeding to drop off for four years. “We expect one of the lowest green turtle seasons in the last four decades, since detailed monitoring started in Queensland, but we are not concerned,” he said. “This dip in turtle breeding is now a well-known natural consequence of weather.” Dr Limpus said the size of a green turtle breeding population was determined by climate events about

18 months before breeding season. This December, researchers have observed just 200 to 300 turtles at Raine Island off Cape York. Usually, more than 6000 are spotted. Dr Limpus says a loggerhead turtle has returned to lay her eggs at Mon Repos on the Bundaberg coast after almost dying on New Years Eve 2009. The turtle became disoriented by lights after coming
QCCU delivers early Christmas present QUEENSLAND Country Credit Union CEO Aileen Cull last week announced the business would pass on the RBAs rate cut in full on variable home loan rates as of December 17 this year. The rate cut for Members is the latest in a series of cuts by Queensland’s largest regionally based credit union, which continues to offer a standard variable home loan rate lower than the big four banks. Ms Cull said the customer owned model of the credit union meant Queens-
land Country could typically offer a greater experience over the long term as they were not driven by delivering dividends to shareholders. “We are thrilled to be able to pass on the full 25 basis points at a time when three of the four major banks have announced cuts of just 20 basis points, and the 4th major is still to announce their cut,” she said. “It means we can not only provide exceptional service to regional Queenslanders, in terms of banking, but that they

can potentially get a better deal as well.” Ms Cull was also quick to point out that the impact of the rate cut would be particularly appreciated at this time of year. “People who have their mortgages with Queensland Country will appreciate being charged less interest as they approach Christmas. “We will always look to achieve the best outcome for our Members, who after all, are owners of Queensland Country,” she said.

Coen Aerodrome ready for any emergency On Monday, December 10, representatives from Queensland Police, Coen Rural Fire Brigade, health services, SES and Cook Shire council attended an emergency drill exercise at Coen Aerodrome. As a certified aerodrome, an emergency field exercise is required to be held every two years with a desktop exercise each alternate year. In this instance, the wreck of a light aircraft was taken to Coen Aerodrome to simulate a crash that
had taken place just after take-off, with four passengers on board. Emergency services crews were mobilised by the initial call to police (000), who then took over management of the mock disaster, coordinating response and logistics. Cook Shire Council’s director of engineering services, Tony Lickiss said “The exercise was a successful event with everyone involved demonstrating a swift, carefully measured response to a potential disaster.”

Keep in Community health check clinics touch…
ONLINE A subscription to read the Western Cape Bulletin online is a convenient way to read your weekly newspaper – no matter where you are in the world or how far you are from the shops.
For only $59, as long as you have a computer* with an internet connection, you can read 50 editions a year and have access to back copies of the newspaper from October, 2011.
STAFF from Queensland Health and Apunipima recently joined forces to promote health and well-being, conducting complete health checks for the local community at the Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic. The first of the days was held in November with a Men’s Day Out. The theme of the day was “need your engine checked and is your motor running smoothly?” Tw e n t y - f o u r m e n completed a full adult health check, with many more attending the day. A healthy barbecue lunch was provided and all who participated were placed in a draw for several great prizes. Three more health days were held in December for women’s business. A generous grant received from Cancer Australia funded a series of three days of Well Women Checks. The emphasis of the days was on promoting
and completing pap smears and breast checks, and women were also encouraged to complete a full adult health check. Fifty-six health checks and 27 pap smears were completed. As a way of promoting the day, and an early Christmas gift for the participants, all women who attended the day received a small gift and had their names placed in a draw for four gift hampers. Food was provided and a healthy lunch cooked by the nutrition team. Following the success of the health days, which were enjoyed by both staff and the Napranum community, plans are now underway for health days for HACC clients on February 5, 6 and 7, 2013. If you know of anyone who may have missed the days but would like to have a health check completed, please contact staff at the Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic (4069 7459).

Christmas messages Whispering Hope ON Christmas Day around 2000 years ago, baby Jesus was born, not in a palace with all the trimmings, but in a stable with the smell of animals and their dung. Yet on this baby, the Prophet Isaiah said in Ch 9 vs 6-7, rested the future of the world according to God’s Master Plan of salvation- his rescue mission. “A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful Counsellor” “Mighty God”, “Eternal Father”, Prince of Peace.” His royal power will continue to grow; His kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David’s successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this. The gospel of Matthew tells us that the birth of baby Jesus was also foretold by Isaiah in Ch 7 v 14 where the baby was called “Immanuel” which means “God is with
us”, showing that this baby was divine. Philippians Ch 2 v 7 says in part (in speaking of Jesus), “…of his own free will he gave up all he had, and took the nature of a servant. He became like a human being and appeared in human likeness.” This shows that he was also human, so he was fully human and fully divine, with the human nature to identify with us and our sins, though he was sinless, and the divine nature to forgive our sins. The world was wallowing in the darkness of sin with no end in sight, and God himself had to come down to help people out of this terrible pit, because sin is the cause and only God can forgive sins and turn aside the guilt and destruction of sin. When baby Jesus grew up, the world had to learn that trusting in him to set people free was God’s answer to all their restlessness and search for hope, hope in a world that is desperately searching for answers. God’s richest blessings to all. – Rev Michael Connolly
The spirit of Christmas Away in a manger no crib for a bed The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay A SCENE of peace and tranquillity, of a 2000 year old event – the birth of Jesus Christ. Bethlehem was so busy, as the Roman Emperor’s census was collected, that Mary and Joseph could find no room at the inn. As we lead our busy lives in 2012, let us take the time to remember the birth of Jesus 2000 years ago and offer the spirit of that first Christmas to those around us. The people of St Joseph’s Catholic Church wish you all a very blessed, happy and peaceful Christmas. – Kath Newman Christmas Services – St Joseph’s Catholic Church Boundary Road, Weipa Monday, December 24 Christmas Eve Carols from 11.30pm Midnight Mass Tuesday, December 25 Christmas Day Mass 8.30am Tuesday, January 1 New Year’s Day 8:30am service Reconciliation available before all Masses
May the peace and hope of Christ’s birth be with you now and in the days ahead... AS you approach this Christmas period, we pray that you might all experience this peace. For those who have become parents this year, the peace that comes from the deep joy you feel in the creation of a unique little person; For those who have married, or began a significant relationship, the peace that comes with the assurance that you know you are deeply loved by another; For those whose lives have
been changed through the death of a family member or close friend, the peace that comes with beautiful memories that even death cannot erase; For those who have taken up new positions, the peace that comes when our lives are refreshed through new challenges; For those who are facing an uncertain 2013, the peace that comes from experiencing the unconditional care of the significant ones in your life;
And for those for whom it is just another day, the peace that comes with celebrating that another day has come. God bless, – Rev Ron Watson & the members of St Luke’s Community Carols by Candlelight 7pm Friday, December 21. Christmas Day 9.15 am Tuesday, December 25. (PS: If you are alone this Christmas and would like to come for lunch, please contact Rev Ron on 4069 7228.)

A world at peace “PEACE on Earth” is the Christmas saying that can bring a person to prayer; it also seems to be a standard response for a beauty queen in her acceptance speech. But “Peace on Earth” would be a miracle indeed; I think it would be well worth praying for this Christmas instead of that IPhone 5 or new 200 Series Cruiser. We only need to cast our thoughts to the unimaginable heartbreak for the community of Newtown
Connecticut, or for the families of our troops killed in Afghanistan this year to understand what a difference “Peace on Earth’ would have made to all those families. However, I think we can all work for peace if you want. It starts with you - inside yourself. That is where you must find peace - even in a world full of fear mongers and war mongers. May there be freedom, equality and brotherhood
among all men. May there be, in our time, at long last, a world at peace in which we, the people, may for once begin to make full use of the great good that is in us. To borrow from Charles Dickens, Christmas can be “the best of times and the worst of times.” I hope for you and your family it will the very best. – Peter McCulkin WTA Chairman

Christmas awards night for Weipa Sportsfishing Club Once again another great christmas party for the Weipa Sportsfishing club. A big thank you to Col and Liz for all the time and effort you put in to yet another delicious dinner, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Cold drinks consumed, a swim, some serious games of pool and a great night was had. Congratulations to Phil and Fiona who were the winners for the year for the male and female anglers with the most points. Runners-up were Rod and Glenda who also made a great effort to take out second places. Fiona also won the award for the most points taken on a single fish. Great to see the girls getting up there! Well done also to Dylan Roberts who won the kids section, and a nice little gift voucher for himself. The
random draws for this year were won by a very happy Glenda and Nick. We have a few more members for 2013, including some kids which is great to see. This weekend’s weighin proved to be very quiet. With only three people weighing in fish, Mike had a great chance of winning that lucky XXXX Gold lure! Phil took out the comp with a nice Queenie included and 354 points to start the year off. Once again, no target species (Grunter) were weighed in. Phil is currently working on the 2013 roster. It has been decided that the next comp will be on January 12 and 13 with the target species being Jewfish. The meeting will be held at French’s house and we look forward to seeing you all there.
Weipa Crocs hit their straps There are good signs for the Weipa crocs cricket side as it prepares for the Annual Gold Field Ashes tournament in charter Towers in late January. Having been bowled over three times in the past month by a Sri Lankan team picked from the detainees at Scherger Detention Centre, the Crocs exacted some revenge on Saturday, December 8 in the final game for the year. Losing the toss the Crocs were sent in on a ‘green’ wicket, with Brad Stevens (35) and Pete McCulkin (36) putting on an opening stand of eighty runs. Aaron Johnson (41) and a quick-fire thirty five from
Doctor Alex saw the Crocs post a solid 8/216. It was the bowling however that mesmerised the Sri Lankan team with the ‘wily’ leg spin of Paul Chambers (4/7), and a very slippery Craig Millard (3/2) made deep inroads into the Sri Lankan top order. With catches sticking the Sri Lankans were restricted
to 28 all out. The Cricket Club is looking forward to a big 2013 with the prospect of another eighta-side competition running in April-May, to be followed by a regional eight-a-side competition in late May or early June. We’ll keep you posted on the 2013 dates and registrations here in The Bully.
Check your boat and trailer before heading out for a festive fish WiTh the onset of both the summer boating season and traditional christmas/new Year holiday period, officers from the cairns Water Police are set for a busy time out on local waterways. Officers are reminding boaties to give their vessels a thorough goingover before heading off in pursuit of the dream catch, and to make sure their safety gear is both serviceable and within expiry dates. Boat owners are also
being requested to check and ensure that both their vessels and trailers are currently registered. Recent checks conducted at local boat ramps have turned up a number of unregistered trailers which resulted in the issue of traffic infringement notices. With the onset of the traditional wet season weather patterns, owners should also be taking the time to check on the holding abilities of their vessel’s anchoring equipment.
Tide tables indicate that the period between December 13, 2012 and January 12, 2013 will see the greatest tidal ranges for the year. High tides, combined with heavy rainfall could see vessels dragging anchors and causing damage, or indeed being lost. Comprehensive information in relation to vessel safety, registration, tides and other marine requirements can be found at http://www.msq.qld. gov.au/

taking his poppers. The Mission River is still fishing extremely well for Queenies and Blue Salmon, and at night there have been Black Jews taking baits. A large stingray was caught at the Mission River bridge on a piece of squid. Golden Trevally are taking live baits in the main river arm from the entrance way up past
