AUSTRALIA Day wasn’t all fun and games in the Weipa and Napranum communities as young vandals went on a destructive spree, stealing vehicles and damaging property. Young vandals go on destructive Australia Day spree  from page 1

After committing the offences at the Golf Club, the same group of juveniles stole a number of vehicles and property items from various residences and businesses in Trunding, Nanum, Evans Landing and Napranum. “Again callous disregard has been shown for other persons and property, with members of the community continually contacting Police concerned with the dangerous manner in which these stolen vehicles were being driven,” Det. Sgt O’Keeffe said. On two occasions the juvenile offenders evaded Police in stolen vehicles. One of the vehicles was later involved in an accident on Kerr Point Rd with unconfirmed reports of one juvenile offender suffering a slight injury. “It is only a matter of time before persons are killed or seriously injured during the commission of similar offences in the Weipa area,” Det. Sgt. O’Keeffe said. Investigations have revealed that a number of the stolen vehicles had been left unlocked with the keys either in the ignition or within the vehicles themselves. “Unfortunately Weipa is no different to any other community, if vehicles and property are left unlocked and unsecured they will be stolen,” Det. Sgt. O’Keeffe said. “It is frustrating for Police to continually hear from offenders that vehicles are left unsecured, and as such are specifically targeted.” “Please remember – lock it or lose it.” On January 27 investigations continued and a 14-year old male was arrested and formally charged with 16 offences.

I hesitate to suggest a study trip to China, to see if some of those wonderfully clever people could be recruited to work for peanuts.

The Queensland Government has issued the final ‘Terms of Reference’ for an eIS for Cape Alumina’s flagship Pisolite hills integrated mine and port project on western Cape York. Cape Alumina will now complete all the studies required to determine the impact of the Pisolite Hills project on the physical environment and then propose measures to minimise or mitigate any such impacts. The EIS will also look at ways to protect or enhance the environmental values of the project area and highlight the positive social and economic benefits that the project will have on the region, in particular for the Traditional Land Owners and local Aboriginal people of western Cape York. The Queensland Government released ‘Draft Terms of Reference’ to the public for comment during October and November last year. After considering the views of the community and key stakeholders, the Government released the final terms in late December 2012. (The ‘Terms of Reference’ are available on the company’s website – www. capealumina.com.au) Cape Alumina’s Managing Director, Graeme Sherlock, said the company had already undertaken some of the “most extensive environmental studies ever undertaken on western Cape York” and expects to have the EIS completed by the end of 2013. “We have done a lot of work on environmental studies for the Pisolite Hills project over many, many years,” Mr Sherlock said. “Given the amount of work that we have already done, we should be ready to submit the EIS for the Commonwealth and State governments’ consideration by the end of the year. “Following approval of the EIS and the receipt of other necessary government approvals, we expect to be in

around waterways in the vicinity of the project area as part of the declaration of the Wenlock River Basin as a wild river area. This had the effect of reducing the bauxite resources available to the project for no tangible environmental benefit. However, the Newman Government’s commitment to lift the Wild River declarations on Cape York and the development of a new regulatory regime for the region enabled Cape Alumina to resume work on the Pisolite Hills project in October 2012. The Pisolite Hills mineral resource, based on over 4,000 drill holes, is estimated to be 134.6 Million tonnes (Mt) of in-situ bauxite. This resource has the potential to yield up to seven Million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of dry-product bauxite over a 15-year period. Cape Alumina’s studies show that the project will boost economic activity by $1.2 billion, in Net Present Value (NPV) terms, and create or sustain more than 1,700 jobs over the mine’s 15-year life. The boost to the Far North Queensland economy alone will be more than $600 million in NPV and 1,300 jobs.

Large croc spotted at Trunding Creek

WESTERN Cape Bulletin reader Dayan Villa snapped this photo of a large crocodile sunning itself on the western bank of Trunding Creek, not far from the crocodile warning sign, last Thursday. Dayan and her family estimated the croc to be more than three metres long. “I’m really glad my sons got to see the crocodile (from a safe distance) so now they really understand why we tell them to stay away from the edge of the water,” Dayan said. A spokesperson for Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service said they were aware of three crocodiles inhabiting the creek, and anyone fishing in the area was putting themselves in real danger. Crocodile sightings should be reported to QNPWS on 4069 7908.

Severe weather disrupts telecommunications TELECOMMUNICATIONS have gone down across Cape York at least twice over the past fortnight, with outages on Thursday, January 24 and again from Sunday, January 27 until late Monday, January 28. The outages hit landline and broadband services, including mobile phones and internet, in a vast area across Cape York and the Torres Strait north of a line from about Gladstone to Mount Isa. In Weipa, the first outage struck at around 9am until 4pm on Thursday, January 24. Communications went out again on Sunday evening at around 6pm, continuing throughout Monday until 4.30pm. In a statement on Monday, January 28, Telstra said its coastal fibre-optic cable, which carries much of the state’s communications needs, was damaged by severe flooding in the Colosseum area on Friday evening. “This was followed by further damage to a back-up cable north of Harlin late yesterday (Sunday), which along with a number of power outages,

resulted in the loss of most landline and broadband services in Mackay, Freshwater, Cairns, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mount Isa and Gladstone,” Telstra said. Poor weather conditions and flood levels had prevented technicians accessing a second damaged cable north of Harlin, Telstra said. Technicians accessed the area by helicopter and road with the help of local emergency services to begin works. Work also took place to restore some services via a link from Darwin. Telstra said 2G, 3G and 4G mobile services were impacted. With EFTPOS lines also

affected Weipa businesses were forced to adopt a “cash only” policy. Weipa Service Centre manager Kevin Ireland said both outages had definitely had an impact on trade. “Customers are so used to using EFTPOS, Fleet Cards or Shell Cards when they purchase fuel it was a bit of an awakening for some,” Mr Ireland said. “I think a lot of people had to go back home and raid their money-boxes to make purchases.” Mr Ireland said the outages would most likely have an effect on businesses in Weipa even once telecommunications were restored.

“When we are unable to fax, phone or email orders through to suppliers we miss cut-off dates and deliveries can be delayed,” he said. A Telstra spokesperson said that in most cases during outages customers were not able to make landline calls outside their region, but may still be able to dial locally. “In such circumstances Telstra encourages its customers to use their mobile in emergency situations only,” he said. A temporary emergency number was set up during Monday’s outage. Telstra apologised for the inconvenience to customers.

WEIPA Wildlife Care had their hands full last week when over 500 Sooty Terns were brought into care following the wild weather created by Tropical Cyclone Oswald. Being oceanic birds, Sooty Terns return to land only rarely to breed or escape rough weather, so when the water-logged and exhausted Terns began to touchdown in Weipa last Tuesday a major rescue effort was launched. Weipa wildlife carer Melissa Adams said people from all over the Weipa area were ﬁnding the Terns, with around 200 collected from the Andoom Mine site alone, and a further 75 from the Scherger Detention Centre. “In total we had 522 Sooty Terns brought into care which were taken to Kristy Philiskirk’s house and placed in blow-up pools on her patio, cages, backs of utes and trailers,” Ms Adams said. “We used fans and kids with hair-dryers to get the birds warm and dry.” On Thursday the carers started trying to release as many of the birds as possible as they were all becoming weaker and needed to eat. “Many ﬂew away on their own when they were strong enough,” Ms Adams said. “The remaining birds were taken to the Lakes, and

with the wind helping their ﬂight, one by one we tried to release them.” The majority of the birds were released at the Lakes with around 50 being taken back to Kristy’s for some more TLC. “The ones that were still too weak to fly were hand-fed pilchards and small pieces of mackerel and given more time to rest and recover,” Ms Adams said. “The overall outcome of the rescue was very successful, and although a lot of birds still died, a lot were also released and removed from the threat of cars, trucks and feral animals.” Ms Adams said Weipa Wildlife Care would like to thank the many people involved for their wonderful and caring efforts during the rescue (and continuing), in particular: Earthbound Constructions, Absolute Cleaning, Fish’s Fly & Sportsﬁshing, Kristy (for taking calls, giving advice and lending her patio as a temporary home, while on holiday overseas), Joan, Shay, Stacey and Troy, Ben, Wally, Stacey, Hayley, Kelly and Jarred, The Western Cape Bulletin, Rio warehouse, Jacko, Rio East Weipa mine, Rio Andoom mine, Carpentaria Contracting, Toll, Direct Haul, Western Cape College, Cleanaway, Dave Wilson, Rio railway workshop, Rio

To the community of Weipa I thank you for your support throughout the council elections early last year and for your continued support for the past nine months, but it is with great regret that I will be resigning from my position as Wta’s Elected Member for Community & Social. My decision to step down is due to changes in my personal life and definitely not a decision I took lightly. The choice to step down was made because I feel it would be unfair to the community of Weipa if I were to continue in a ratepayer-paid position where I was no longer able to give 100 per cent. I sincerely apolgise if I have let the people of Weipa down, especially those who supported me, but I ask that you continue to support the other Elected Members, the Chair, the Rio Tinto Appointed Members and the Traditional Owner representative as they always try to make decisions in the best interest of the community of Weipa.

MANY of us must support ourselves and our family financially, pay off debts,work hard (often physically) and act as the protector and emotional councillor when getting home to your loved ones. You find that the weeks go by, you work hard, you earn the right to play hard, and never show any signs of weakness. Often we, and especially men, don’t let on that money is tight, that they are having regular headaches, not sleeping properly, that they are having aches and pains or that they might be overburdened with their workload. This places a lot of stress on our “Mr and Mrs Invincibles”. Does that sound a bit like you? I see it in myself and my friends a lot, and I am asking you – are you listening to the signs that your body is sending you? Are you listening to little niggles and getting them checked out? Do you allow yourself time to rest when you feel fatigued or sick? Are you talking to someone when you have stress and emotional pressure in your work of private life? If you choose not to listen to your body you might find that one day it “screams” at you, leading to lots of problems and manifested diseases which could have been prevented by making changes to your lifestyle while your body whispered at you saying “ its time to look after me”. Long-term stress and disregard to your health can be very dangerous to your health. The list may be too long but this includes, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, impotence, teeth grinding, depression, and the list goes on. Other symptoms of stress on your body (either physical or mental) can be behavioural changes such as changes in sleep patterns, loss of motivation in otherwise driven people, loss or gain of appetite, nail biting and loss of libido. “Mr and Mrs Invincible” is often reluctant to go to the doctor, avoiding seeking help for as long as possible, with the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. But men in particular must make health a priority especially when they enter their 30s and 40s due to the increased risk of health issues.

I am not saying you need to turn your life around at once. The anger of a righteous and just God will be handing out the sentence of eternal death one day, but to all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, the sentence of death has already passed over. We can know right now that we are walking in God’s favour! Isn’t that such a wonderful thought! Romans Ch 5 vs 6-9 states, “For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time God chose.

It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It might even be that someone might dare to die for a good person. But God has shown us how much he loves us- it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! By his blood we are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God’s anger! God is love. Rev Michael Connolly

The Australia Day award for Best Event of the Year was presented to the hard-working team from the Weipa Bullride, and accepted by Nikki Clegg and Steve Fairbrother. Steve Fairbrother found himself on the main stage again after he was announced as the Weipa Australia Day Citizen of the Year. A stirring rendition of the national anthem followed the presentations and the children took to the golf course for some true-blue Aussie games with the girls from the SPQ gym.

MORE than 100 people attended the official Weipa Town Authority Australia Day celebrations, held this year at the Carpentaria Golf Club. The day commenced with a fun run/ walk which was enjoyed by a number of enthusiastic participants, and two dogs. Following a delicious Aussie sausage sizzle breakfast, expertly prepared by Golf Club members, the official ceremony began. WTA chairman Peter McCulkin welcomed the happy crowd before MC Ian Pressley announced the winners of the fun run/walk. Perhaps the most important part of the ceremony followed as 12 Weipa locals took their affirmations and oaths and officially became Australian citizens. The 12 proud new Aussies are: Miss Kanokwan Bunkhtong, Mrs Anong, Thepchanthuek, Ms Sakunthip

A COMMUNITY barbecue was held at Weipa Woolworths store on Australia Day with proceeds from the event donated to Weipa Girl Guides and Weipa CapeAbility. The local Girl Guides packed groceries for customers, collecting $1200 for their efforts. Proceeds from the barbecue and raffle totalled $1360 which was shared between the Girl Guides and Weipa CapeAbility. Weipa Woolworths manager, Jenny Everist said she and her team were amazed at the generosity of the community and thanked them for their support of the in-store events. “The last two weeks has been very challenging for all and I’m proud to say we live in Weipa,” Ms Everist said.

Cut your tax bill by salary sacrificing Sacrificing part of your salary can cut tax bills and help secure a more comfortable retirement. MOST of us tend to think we pay too much tax during our working lives. But there’s an effective way to cut your tax bill when it comes to superannuation and it’s called salary sacrificing. You may already top up your super in addition to the minimum 9 per cent your employer has to pay into your super on your behalf. Sacrifice and boost your savings Salary sacrificing is a great option to boost your savings in the long term mainly because of the lower superannuation tax rate you’ll pay on that portion of your money. You need to get your employer to pay some of your pre-tax salary directly into your superannuation fund before income tax payments are taken out. It works like this: - You don’t pay income tax on the money you salary sacrifice into super. - Instead, these pre-tax contributions are taxed at 15 per cent instead of your marginal tax rate. - You may pay a lower income tax rate if you salary sacrifice, and you may pay less income tax on your remaining income because you may fall into a lower tax bracket. The long-term benefits of taking this option are: -You’ll have more to invest.

- The maximum tax on investment earnings from super is 15 per cent. So the benefits of salary sacrificing may mean you have more choice about when you retire because your retirement savings are likely to be stronger. The earlier you salary sacrifice, the better your final retirement bounty may be. You may end up with a retirement income that lasts a lot longer and is much higher than you envisaged it would be. Beware of contribution caps These are limits set by the Government to restrict how much you can contribute to super at concessional tax rates. If you exceed the caps the tax penalties are harsh. Get Started funding available to help kids get into sport APPLICATIONS are now open for the Get Started grassroots funding support program which is designed to help with the cost of kids playing sport. The seas have been up to four metres so I haven’t had any reports, so when the wind and swell abates there should be some good captures on the reefs with the Three Mile a good starting point for Fingermark, Tuskies and Trout. It’s anyone’s guess if the Mackerel and Longtail Tuna will be around after everything settles down. We as anglers have a big

part to play in the future of our chosen sport in more ways than one. If we are going to release under-sized ﬁsh use a little bit of care. If they have swallowed the hook cut the line instead of trying to pull it out, and use a wet rag so you don’t take the protective slime off the ﬁsh. There is an old saying “limit your catch, not catch your limit”. I’m not against

catching a feed but when you have enough for a feed, release the rest and we will have ﬁsh to catch in the future. A picture is worth a thousand words they say, so photograph the trophy ﬁsh and you can have a memory forever - eat it, and its gone. So I’ll get of my high horse for now smooth seas, light breezes and tight lines.

WELL, the rain finally arrived and it didn’t muck around. Cyclone Oswald was very kind to us but no-one could of predicted the devastation it dished out to the rest of the State and it is now pushing into NSW. We have had plenty of rain and strong winds and only the hardiest anglers pursued their favourite pastime in the inclement weather. Their persistence was rewarded with some nice Grunter with fish being caught in the most popular spots. Gongbung Beach has fish to two kilos, and Evans Landing has had a smaller run of fish. Speaking of Evans Landing there has been a very large croc patrolling the area so keep your eyes open when you launch your boat. Another large croc has been spotted at Trunding Creek so it pays to keep alert at all times. The Mission River bridge still has small Queenfish taking live baits and a very large blue bast@#! that took a live bait as well. The current lines in the main river are holding large schools of baitfish and in turn they are being smashed by Queenfish and Trevally. If you use the Trout adage of “match the hatch” use very small lures to match the size of the baitfish. The Barra season will open at noon on Friday, February 1 so this weekend there should be some nice fish caught, and fishing the edges of the mangroves should produce some fish. Fishing off the beach up Cullen Point way there were Trevally and Queenfish on the chew on Squid and Pilchards as Trish Power and Trevor Laver can attest too. Threadfin Salmon should also make an appearance soon and the Mission River would be a good place to start looking for them.

Champion North Queensland team Argun Warriors qualified for the clash after winning the grand final of the Men’s Deadly Choices Arthur Beetson Foundation Queensland Murri rugby league carnival at Ipswich last September. The Warriors were too strong for the Yarrabah Seahawks in the one-sided final, running out comfortable 30-12 victors. Yowies included NRL players Timana Tahu and Reece Robinson along with ex player Wes Patton and they beat Mindaribba Warriors

26-20 in the October 1 final. This coming match will take on the proportions of a Queensland versus NSW State of Origin series encounter, such is the interest amongst Indigenous footballers in both states including on Cape York. Argun Warriors also had NRL footballers in Parramatta star Chris Sandow and Canberra Raiders forward Travis Waddell at the Murri Knockout carnival. Both sides will be without those for the big game. for Argun Warriors. Roy Baira is the brother of Weipa’s based multi-skilled sportsman Jimmy Baira and they both played for Kulipyam at the Cairns Allblacks carnival last October. Argun Warriors are also the reigning Torres Strait Island of Origin champions having defeated Saguci 20-14 in the final at Badu in June 2011. No Island of Origin carnival was held in 2012 due to a lack of volunteers to run it. If they win the big clash Argun Warriors will be the pride of North Queensland, Torres Strait and Cape York.
