Vandals wreak havoc

AUSTRALIA Day wasn’t all fun and games in the Weipa and Napranum communities as young vandals went on a destructive spree, stealing vehicles and damaging property. Weipa Police attended the Carpentaria Golf Club on the evening of January 26 after a number of juveniles maliciously caused a large amount of damage to property and machinery. “These wanton acts of vandalism have shown a complete disregard for the Weipa community and will have enduring financial effects at the Club,” Detective Sergeant Jock O’Keeffe said.  continued page 2

After committing the offences at the Golf Club, the same group of juveniles stole a number of vehicles and property items from various residences and businesses in Trunding, Nanum, Evans Landing and Napranum. “Again callous disregard has been shown for other persons and property, with members of the community continually contacting Police concerned with the dangerous manner in which these stolen vehicles were being driven,” Det. Sgt O’Keeffe said. On two occasions the juvenile offenders evaded Police in stolen vehicles. One of the vehicles was later involved in an accident on Kerr Point Rd with unconfirmed reports of one juvenile offender suffering a slight injury. “It is only a matter of time before persons are killed or seriously injured during the commission of similar offences in the Weipa area,” Det. Sgt. O’Keeffe said. Investigations have revealed that a number of the stolen vehicles had been left unlocked with the keys either in the ignition or within the vehicles themselves. “Unfortunately Weipa is no different to any other community, if vehicles and property are left unlocked and unsecured they will be stolen,” Det. Sgt. O’Keeffe said. “It is frustrating for Police to continually hear from offenders that vehicles are left unsecured, and as such are specifically targeted.” “Please remember – lock it or lose it.” On January 27 investigations continued and a 14-year old male was arrested and formally charged with 16 offences.

I know they must be clever, because I cannot even figure out how to start machines like that until my grandson shows me. I know their work must be important, because I hear they are paid absolute fortunes. Plus,

You don’t question the airline pilot who flies you to Brisbane, and he is nearly as important. If they are there behind their computers, everything must be as it should be. Except, I have just read something really upsetting. It seems a computer person in America, working for a transport infrastructure company (whatever one of those is) has just been fired. He was very clever, just like our people, and

They found lots of suspicious activity, and eventually realised that our computer person had outsourced his job to a backyard company in China. They were doing all the work for only 20 per cent of his salary. Everyone else thought he was working hard, but in reality he had been sitting at his computer flicking from Facebook to

Should I criticise him for his lavish lifestyle, bought at the expense of some poor Chinese person slaving away on a pittance to earn his daily bowl of rice? Should I criticise his company for not knowing that the only ‘work’ he ever did was the occasional progress report? There must be a lesson to be learned here, but I am not sure what it is. I hesitate to suggest a study trip to China, to see if some of those wonderfully clever people could be recruited to work for peanuts.

The Queensland Government has issued the final ‘Terms of Reference’ for an eIS for Cape Alumina’s flagship Pisolite hills integrated mine and port project on western Cape York. Cape Alumina will now complete all the studies required to determine the impact of the Pisolite Hills project on the physical environment and then propose measures to minimise or mitigate any such impacts. The EIS will also look at ways to protect or enhance the environmental values of the project area and highlight the positive social and economic benefits that the project will have on the region, in particular for the Traditional Land Owners and local Aboriginal people of western Cape York. The Queensland Government released ‘Draft Terms of Reference’ to the public for comment during October and November last year. After considering the views of the community and key stakeholders, the Government released the final terms in late December 2012. (The ‘Terms of Reference’ are available on the company’s website – www. capealumina.com.au) Cape Alumina’s Managing Director, Graeme Sherlock, said the company had already undertaken some of the “most extensive environmental studies ever undertaken on western Cape York” and expects to have the EIS completed by the end of 2013. “We have done a lot of work on environmental studies for the Pisolite Hills project over many, many years,” Mr Sherlock said. “Given the amount of work that we have already done, we should be ready to submit the EIS for the Commonwealth and State governments’ consideration by the end of the year. “Following approval of the EIS and the receipt of other necessary government approvals, we expect to be in

which an Environmental Impact Statement is required’ under section 26 (1) (a) of the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971. The declaration was recognition of the strategic importance of the project to the State of Queensland and in particular the western Cape York region. Development of Pisolite Hills was put on hold in October 2010 after the previous State Labor Government, contrary to the expert advice of its officers and consultants, imposed 500-metre-wide buffer zones

around waterways in the vicinity of the project area as part of the declaration of the Wenlock River Basin as a wild river area. This had the effect of reducing the bauxite resources available to the project for no tangible environmental benefit. However, the Newman Government’s commitment to lift the Wild River declarations on Cape York and the development of a new regulatory regime for the region enabled Cape Alumina to resume work on the Pisolite Hills project in October 2012. The Pisolite Hills mineral resource, based on over 4,000 drill holes, is estimated to be 134.6 Million tonnes (Mt) of in-situ bauxite. This resource has the potential to yield up to seven Million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of dry-product bauxite over a 15-year period. Cape Alumina’s studies show that the project will boost economic activity by $1.2 billion, in Net Present Value (NPV) terms, and create or sustain more than 1,700 jobs over the mine’s 15-year life. The boost to the Far North Queensland economy alone will be more than $600 million in NPV and 1,300 jobs.

Large croc spotted at Trunding Creek

WESTERN Cape Bulletin reader Dayan Villa snapped this photo of a large crocodile sunning itself on the western bank of Trunding Creek, not far from the crocodile warning sign, last Thursday. Dayan and her family estimated the croc to be more than three metres long. “I’m really glad my sons got to see the crocodile (from a safe distance) so now they really understand why we tell them to stay away from the edge of the water,” Dayan said. A spokesperson for Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service said they were aware of three crocodiles inhabiting the creek, and anyone fishing in the area was putting themselves in real danger. Crocodile sightings should be reported to QNPWS on 4069 7908.

Severe weather disrupts telecommunications TELECOMMUNICATIONS have gone down across Cape York at least twice over the past fortnight, with outages on Thursday, January 24 and again from Sunday, January 27 until late Monday, January 28. The outages hit landline and broadband services, including mobile phones and internet, in a vast area across Cape York and the Torres Strait north of a line from about Gladstone to Mount Isa. In Weipa, the first outage struck at around 9am until 4pm on Thursday, January 24. Communications went out again on Sunday evening at around 6pm, continuing throughout Monday until 4.30pm. In a statement on Monday, January 28, Telstra said its coastal fibre-optic cable, which carries much of the state’s communications needs, was damaged by severe flooding in the Colosseum area on Friday evening. “This was followed by further damage to a back-up cable north of Harlin late yesterday (Sunday), which along with a number of power outages,

resulted in the loss of most landline and broadband services in Mackay, Freshwater, Cairns, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mount Isa and Gladstone,” Telstra said. Poor weather conditions and flood levels had prevented technicians accessing a second damaged cable north of Harlin, Telstra said. Technicians accessed the area by helicopter and road with the help of local emergency services to begin works. Work also took place to restore some services via a link from Darwin. Telstra said 2G, 3G and 4G mobile services were impacted. With EFTPOS lines also

affected Weipa businesses were forced to adopt a “cash only” policy. Weipa Service Centre manager Kevin Ireland said both outages had definitely had an impact on trade. “Customers are so used to using EFTPOS, Fleet Cards or Shell Cards when they purchase fuel it was a bit of an awakening for some,” Mr Ireland said. “I think a lot of people had to go back home and raid their money-boxes to make purchases.” Mr Ireland said the outages would most likely have an effect on businesses in Weipa even once telecommunications were restored.

“When we are unable to fax, phone or email orders through to suppliers we miss cut-off dates and deliveries can be delayed,” he said. A Telstra spokesperson said that in most cases during outages customers were not able to make landline calls outside their region, but may still be able to dial locally. “In such circumstances Telstra encourages its customers to use their mobile in emergency situations only,” he said. A temporary emergency number was set up during Monday’s outage. Telstra apologised for the inconvenience to customers.

Wet, exhausted and covered in red mud the Sooty Terns rest-up in a blow-up swimming pool. Photo: Giembra Busmer.

WEIPA Wildlife Care had their hands full last week when over 500 Sooty Terns were brought into care following the wild weather created by Tropical Cyclone Oswald. Being oceanic birds, Sooty Terns return to land only rarely to breed or escape rough weather, so when the water-logged and exhausted Terns began to touchdown in Weipa last Tuesday a major rescue effort was launched. Weipa wildlife carer Melissa Adams said people from all over the Weipa area were finding the Terns, with around 200 collected from the Andoom Mine site alone, and a further 75 from the Scherger Detention Centre. “In total we had 522 Sooty Terns brought into care which were taken to Kristy Philiskirk’s house and placed in blow-up pools on her patio, cages, backs of utes and trailers,” Ms Adams said. “We used fans and kids with hair-dryers to get the birds warm and dry.” On Thursday the carers started trying to release as many of the birds as possible as they were all becoming weaker and needed to eat. “Many flew away on their own when they were strong enough,” Ms Adams said. “The remaining birds were taken to the Lakes, and

with the wind helping their flight, one by one we tried to release them.” The majority of the birds were released at the Lakes with around 50 being taken back to Kristy’s for some more TLC. “The ones that were still too weak to fly were hand-fed pilchards and small pieces of mackerel and given more time to rest and recover,” Ms Adams said. “The overall outcome of the rescue was very successful, and although a lot of birds still died, a lot were also released and removed from the threat of cars, trucks and feral animals.” Ms Adams said Weipa Wildlife Care would like to thank the many people involved for their wonderful and caring efforts during the rescue (and continuing), in particular: Earthbound Constructions, Absolute Cleaning, Fish’s Fly & Sportsfishing, Kristy (for taking calls, giving advice and lending her patio as a temporary home, while on holiday overseas), Joan, Shay, Stacey and Troy, Ben, Wally, Stacey, Hayley, Kelly and Jarred, The Western Cape Bulletin, Rio warehouse, Jacko, Rio East Weipa mine, Rio Andoom mine, Carpentaria Contracting, Toll, Direct Haul, Western Cape College, Cleanaway, Dave Wilson, Rio railway workshop, Rio

We need your help WE hope 2013 will be Weipa Wildlife Care’s best year yet. We have a great team of carers on board, with a wide range of experience and we hope to continue to grow our name and be recognised, and to educate and make people aware. Wildlife care is very rewarding however it is also very time consuming and costly. In order to keep providing the services we do, we need your help! Most of our carers have fulltime jobs and a lot of the care for these animals comes out of each carer’s pocket. We need to raise more money to help out with the feeding, bedding, caging and medicine for these amazing creatures. This year, we hope for the first time to hold a few fundraising events to help support our work. Please visit and “like” our Facebook page to keep up to date with our upcoming events www. facebook.com/weipa wildlifecare and please, if you can make a donation, no matter how big or small, contact us. To the community of Weipa I thank you for your support throughout the council elections early last year and for your continued support for the past nine months, but it is with great regret that I will be resigning from my position as Wta’s Elected Member for Community & Social. My decision to step down is due to changes in my personal life and definitely not a decision I took lightly. The choice to step down was made because I feel it would be unfair to the community of Weipa if I were to continue in a ratepayer-paid position where I was no longer able to give 100 per cent. I sincerely apolgise if I have let the people of Weipa down, especially those who supported me, but I ask that you continue to support the other Elected Members, the Chair, the Rio Tinto Appointed Members and the Traditional Owner representative as they always try to make decisions in the best interest of the community of Weipa.

I am still very passionate about the betterment of Weipa and will continue to be involved in certain community events, fundraisers and other not-for-profit organisations. Thank you again for your time and support.

I love a Sunday sesh... My australia Day was spent at the alby listening to a great local band called ‘Downtime’. Well, they certainly turned my downtime into my uptime - what a great time was had by all. The atmosphere was welcoming, the crowd was warm and friendly and the location was picturesque. Everything that Weipa has to offer. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to enjoy this, once a month, on a Sunday afternoon? What a great way to end the weekend. Are you invicible, or not?

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

MANY of us must support ourselves and our family financially, pay off debts, work hard (often physically) and act as the protector and emotional councillor when getting home to your loved ones. You find that the weeks go by, you work hard, you earn the right to play hard, and never show any signs of weakness. Often we, and especially men, don’t let on that money is tight, that they are having regular headaches, not sleeping properly, that they are having aches and pains or that they might be overburdened with their workload. This places a lot of stress on our “Mr and Mrs Invincibles”. Does that sound a bit like you? I see it in myself and my friends a lot, and I am asking you – are you listening to the signs that your body is sending you? Are you listening to little niggles and getting them checked out? Do you allow yourself time to rest when you feel fatigued or sick? Are you talking to someone when you have stress and emotional pressure in your work of private life? If you choose not to listen to your body you might find that one day it “screams” at you, leading to lots of problems and manifested diseases which could have been prevented by making changes to your lifestyle while your body whispered at you saying “ its time to look after me”. Long-term stress and disregard to your health can be very dangerous to your health. The list may be too long but this includes, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, impotence, teeth grinding, depression, and the list goes on. Other symptoms of stress on your body (either physical or mental) can be behavioural changes such as changes in sleep patterns, loss of motivation in otherwise driven people, loss or gain of appetite, nail biting and loss of libido. “Mr and Mrs Invincible” is often reluctant to go to the doctor, avoiding seeking help for as long as possible, with the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. But men in particular must make health a priority especially when they enter their 30s and 40s due to the increased risk of health issues.

 Exercise light to moderately three to five times as week and spend some time outside  Have at least three to five alcoholfree days in a week – you don’t have to give up alcohol all together just avoid binging and give your liver a rest to establish a balance in your body that allows it to transport toxins away so they can’t cause too much havoc and cause diseases  Quit smoking all together – it’s a major contributor not only to lung cancer but so many other diseases as well  Eat many fruits and vegies – the more you eat the less room you have for unhealthy foods  Reduce your animal fat intake, rather have fish and try out some other recipes using avocado, nuts and seeds for fat sources  Try yoga and/or meditation to release stress  Go and see a doctor when you know something is wrong or when its time for your next health check-up.

I am not saying you need to turn your life around at once. But the earlier you start making small changes and keep improving your health and lifestyle habits every day, by allowing conversations about your emotions and health, eating nutritious, cutting down on drugs such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, staying home and getting well when you’re sick, you can make major differences to your health in the long run. Our bodies are made to deal with stress and to eliminate toxins. It’s a great powerhouse if we don’t overload its capacity and if we keep maintaining it. Just like our car. If you look after it will drive you for a very long time. If you allow the right fuel, the motor won’t pack up. If we keep putting the wrong fuel in it, and don’t maintain it, eventually it will break down.  Talk to your family, your partner, your friends or your supervisor - anyone that you feel can help you. (A lack of emotional/stress release is strongly related to prostate cancer and others)

Because of the stubbornness of Pharaoh in refusing to let the Israelite (Jewish) people go, the Lord God was going to kill all the firstborn sons of the families and the cattle of anyone that did not show the blood of a lamb (with no defect) on the lintel posts of the doorway of their houses. The angel of Death will be the servant of God to carry out this task. (see exodus chapters 11 and 12).

By Rev. Michael Connolly

The anger of a righteous and just God will be handing out the sentence of eternal death one day, but to all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, the sentence of death has already passed over. We can know right now that we are walking in God’s favour! Isn’t that such a wonderful thought! Romans Ch 5 vs 6-9 states, “For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time God chose.

It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It might even be that someone might dare to die for a good person. But God has shown us how much he loves us- it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! By his blood we are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God’s anger! God is love. Rev Michael Connolly

It was a close race between Ray and Martin in the Pie and Beer race at the Bowls Club on Australia Day.

The Bowls Club best dressed female in her total Aussie outfit was Anna.

Leanne and Rita were doing more laughing than eating in their leg of the Beer and Pie race.

Here is one style of ball passing at the Bowls Club Australia Day celebrations.

Here is another style to try to pass the ball through the hole.

But this is the winning style needed to pass the ball through the hole, and it was done twice.

The Bully’s Stretch caught up with Shane to prove that ZZ TOP were at the Bowls Club on Australia Day.

MORE than 100 people attended the official Weipa Town Authority Australia Day celebrations, held this year at the Carpentaria Golf Club. The day commenced with a fun run/ walk which was enjoyed by a number of enthusiastic participants, and two dogs. Following a delicious Aussie sausage sizzle breakfast, expertly prepared by Golf Club members, the official ceremony began. WTA chairman Peter McCulkin welcomed the happy crowd before MC Ian Pressley announced the winners of the fun run/walk. Perhaps the most important part of the ceremony followed as 12 Weipa locals took their affirmations and oaths and officially became Australian citizens. The local Girl Guides packed groceries for customers, collecting $1200 for their efforts. Proceeds from the barbecue and raffle totalled $1360 which was shared between the Girl Guides and Weipa CapeAbility. Weipa Woolworths manager, Jenny Everist said she and her team were amazed at the generosity of the community and thanked them for their support of the in-store events. “The last two weeks has been very challenging for all and I’m proud to say we live in Weipa,” Ms Everist said.

Cut your tax bill by salary sacrificing Sacrificing part of your salary can cut tax bills and help secure a more comfortable retirement. MOST of us tend to think we pay too much tax during our working lives. But there’s an effective way to cut your tax bill when it comes to superannuation and it’s called salary sacrificing. You may already top up your super in addition to the minimum 9 per cent your employer has to pay into your super on your behalf. Sacrifice and boost your savings Salary sacrificing is a great option to boost your savings in the long term mainly because of the lower superannuation tax rate you’ll pay on that portion of your money. You need to get your employer to pay some of your pre-tax salary directly into your superannuation fund before income tax payments are taken out. It works like this: - You don’t pay income tax on the money you salary sacrifice into super. - Instead, these pre-tax contributions are taxed at 15 per cent instead of your marginal tax rate. - You may pay a lower income tax rate if you salary sacrifice, and you may pay less income tax on your remaining income because you may fall into a lower tax bracket. The long-term benefits of taking this option are: -You’ll have more to invest.

- The maximum tax on investment earnings from super is 15 per cent. So the benefits of salary sacrificing may mean you have more choice about when you retire because your retirement savings are likely to be stronger. The earlier you salary sacrifice, the better your final retirement bounty may be. You may end up with a retirement income that lasts a lot longer and is much higher than you envisaged it would be. Beware of contribution caps These are limits set by the Government to restrict how much you can contribute to super at concessional tax rates. If you exceed the caps the tax penalties are harsh. So how do you do it? Financial planners are well versed in the processes involved with salary sacrificing and can run through the details with you. You will also need to speak to your employer to ensure they are able to set up a salary sacrifice arrangement. AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

If the people around you can’t stand the pace you have set, you will have to carry on by yourself. Don’t let their low energy hold you back. Romance. This will be an excellent week for romance. You will have to take it easy at first, though. Try not to rush into any new relationships.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

This will be a good week for getting rid of rubbish. Try to clear out as much stuff as possible - not just to make more room, but also to freshen up your life. Romance. This would be a good time for a wild romantic fling! Events may move faster than you expect. Brace yourself for the ride!

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

FOR KIDS

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Recent events were not your fault and you couldn’t have done anything to prevent them. Romance. You may be so concerned with getting everything right at home that you neglect your other interests. Find a better balance in order to save your sanity.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

You may have to venture out by yourself. Don’t let other people push you in the wrong direction. Regain your balance before meeting up with others. Romance. This may not the best time to challenge your partner’s choices. Try to find a subtle way of showing how you feel.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

You have a distinctive way of doing things. Don’t worry if this annoys other people at times. They will just have to adapt. Romance. You must be careful not to let your emotions get the better of you this week. If you can stay level-headed, the opposite sex will take interest in you.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 133 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

Your enthusiasm will help to propel you forward this week. However, it is important that you are completely clear about what you want. Romance. The Moon/Ceres Midpoint is in your sign. This should draw to you the person that you need most. Don’t overwhelm them with details.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

You will be more sociable once you have had a chance to relax. An offer from your friends will turn out to be much more fun than you expect. Enjoy! Romance. Both you and your partner will be cheered up by the recent improvement in your relationship. Don’t dwell on the recent past!

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

A friend may encourage you to break an important commitment. They are not the ones who will have to suffer the consequences if things go wrong, however. Romance. A brief meeting with a stranger may be the start of something new. Make time in your schedule for them and they will fill it.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

Your enthusiasm will rub off on the people around you. Even you will be amazed at how much you can achieve. Romance. This will be an excellent time to push through some changes which have been taking time to materialise. Your partner will be impressed by your positive mood.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

A reflex reaction to a situation may not be appropriate. Try to give the matter some thought before you jump in. Romance. Communications with your partner will be especially good this week. Talk through several topics in great length. Make time each night to reconnect on previous ideas.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed – Storm Jameson

Page 16 Western Cape Bulletin January 30, 2013

SOLUTIONS No. 133

You may be feeling a little restless because other people seem to be fine in their current stagnant position. This doesn’t mean you have to be as well. Romance. Use this week to get to the bottom of any issues which have been coming between you and your partner. Don’t hold back!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

The Moon/Jupiter Midpoint presently in your sign will help to make you especially generous with the people that you are close to. Shower them with gifts! Romance. Your partner will be in a strange mood. Wait until they have calmed down before you break important news to them.

Northern Pride launch 2013 membership campaign SkILL360 Northern Pride is targeting 3,000 members this season after officially kicking off its exciting ‘More Than Pride’ membership drive and new online shop. The Intrust Super Cup squad is currently ramping up its pre-season training ahead of what is expected to be a highly successful 2013, with Jason Demetriou as coach and an impressive line-up both on and off the field. Pride Chief Executive Officer Chris Sheppard said the ‘More Than Pride’ campaign focuses on the community aspect of the Northern Pride, which proudly represents the whole Far North Queensland region in the third best rugby league competition in the world. “The inspiration for the concept came from the players themselves, who proudly play for the club and have a semiprofessional rugby league career, but also have regular lives where they work full-time jobs,” Sheppard said. “However, it also includes our supporters, volunteers, coaching staff and everyone else involved in the club, who dedicate so much time to the Pride, but also have pride in so much else in their lives. “We think our fans and the FNQ public in general will be really excited by the whole ‘More Than Pride’ concept, and we encourage them to show their support by becoming a member. “We have many wonderful supporters and we hope they make the membership commitment in 2013. “Pride in our people...Pride in our rugby...Pride in our identity...Pride in our development...Pride in community engagement...More Than Pride.” The annual membership packages, which are available to buy from the Pride’s new online shop at www.morethanpride. com.au, start from just $20 (juniors and concession) and $40 for adults and include: a stubby cooler, cooler bag, T-shirt, wristband, magnet, lanyard and membership card, membership sticker and team poster. “We believe this year’s membership packages are incredible value, and I urge fans to pledge their support for the Pride by becoming a member,” said Sheppard. “We’re a club that boasts the most loyal and passionate fan base in the competition, and by becoming a member, you directly contribute to our team’s success.” Sheppard said membership is the only way for Pride supporters to truly show their commitment to the club. “We’ve worked hard to provide the Far North Queensland community with the opportunity to support our team through membership,” he said. “Membership is the best measure of a club’s success and stability, and the best way for our supporters to show their commitment to the Pride. “We represent Far North Queensland, and so do our players and supporters, so get involved and support your local Intrust Super Cup footy club. “My message for all Far North Queensland people is that the Pride is your club. We couldn’t exist without your support, so get involved and support your club in 2013. Local residents and businesses also have the opportunity to purchase a corporate box for home games at Barlow Park, along with special memberships providing access to the Legends Bar. To become a member, or to find out more about corporate box and Legends Bar membership options, visit www. morethanpride.com.au

More than 30 clubs across the Cook electorate have already applied to be registered for Get Started, including Weipa BMX, Weipa Junior Soccer and Weipa Oztag. Up to 40,000 Get Started

vouchers will be available over the next three years. Grants up to $10,000 are also available to sporting clubs to help them grow through the purchase of new sporting equipment or the promotion of new membership initiatives through the Get Going program, and the Get Playing program will provide $100,000 grants for clubs to upgrade or replace existing facilities and infrastructure. Cairns NRL trial almost sold out FAr North Queensland has once again proven itself as one of the most passionate rugby league regions in Australia, with the NrL trial match in Cairns next month already almost a sell-out. Local footy fans have been snapping up tickets at a rapid rate for the North Queensland Cowboys blockbuster against St. George Illawarra Dragons at Barlow Park in Cairns on February 16. And Cairns District Rugby League Operations Manager Pat Bailey urged anyone interested in going to the game to get their tickets quickly, with less than 40 grandstand seats remaining and general admission expected to be at capacity. “As expected, there’s been an overwhelming response from the FNQ footy public to this mouth-watering game,” Ms Bailey said. “ We ’ r e e x p e c t i n g Origin stars such as Johnathan Thurston, Matthew Bowen, Matt Scott, James Tamou

and Brent Tate to be gracing Barlow Park, so it will be the place to be. “The message is ‘get in quick’ and don’t leave it until the day of the game to buy your ticket, or you might miss out.” For the first time, footy fans have been able to secure their tickets online through Tickets Cairns (www.ticketscairns. com.au), as well as in person through Brothers Leagues Club and over the telephone. In an extra treat for fans, Skill360 Northern Pride will take on the Cowboys Under 20s Toyota Cup side in a mouthwatering curtain raiser. Corporate enquiries for the NRL trial game should be made to the Cairns District Rugby League Office (4031 6772) or email cdrl@bigpond.com Tickets are also on sale through Tickets Cairns, Brothers Leagues Club (Cairns), 105 Anderson St, Manunda; the Ticket Hotline (4053 8333) or www.ticketscairns.com.au or email info@ticketscairns. com.au

The seas have been up to four metres so I haven’t had any reports, so when the wind and swell abates there should be some good captures on the reefs with the Three Mile a good starting point for Fingermark, Tuskies and Trout. It’s anyone’s guess if the Mackerel and Longtail Tuna will be around after everything settles down. We as anglers have a big

part to play in the future of our chosen sport in more ways than one. If we are going to release under-sized fish use a little bit of care. If they have swallowed the hook cut the line instead of trying to pull it out, and use a wet rag so you don’t take the protective slime off the fish. There is an old saying “limit your catch, not catch your limit”. I’m not against

catching a feed but when you have enough for a feed, release the rest and we will have fish to catch in the future. A picture is worth a thousand words they say, so photograph the trophy fish and you can have a memory forever - eat it, and its gone. So I’ll get of my high horse for now smooth seas, light breezes and tight lines.

WELL, the rain finally arrived and it didn’t muck around. Cyclone Oswald was very kind to us but no-one could of predicted the devastation it dished out to the rest of the State and it is now pushing into NSW. We have had plenty of rain and strong winds and only the hardiest anglers pursued their favourite pastime in the inclement weather. Their persistence was rewarded with some nice Grunter with fish being caught in the most popular spots. Gongbung Beach has fish to two kilos, and Evans Landing has had a smaller run of fish. Speaking of Evans Landing there has been a very large croc patrolling the area so keep your eyes open when you launch your boat. Another large croc has been spotted at Trunding Creek so it pays to keep alert at all times. The Mission River bridge still has small Queenfish taking live baits and a very large blue bast@#! that took a live bait as well. The current lines in the main river are holding large schools of baitfish and in turn they are being smashed by Queenfish and Trevally. If you use the Trout adage of “match the hatch” use very small lures to match the size of the baitfish. The Barra season will open at noon on Friday, February 1 so this weekend there should be some nice fish caught, and fishing the edges of the mangroves should produce some fish. Fishing off the beach up Cullen Point way there were Trevally and Queenfish on the chew on Squid and Pilchards as Trish Power and Trevor Laver can attest too. Threadfin Salmon should also make an appearance soon and the Mission River would be a good place to start looking for them.

THERE will be a Weipa connection when Argun Warriors meets Newcastle Yowies from NSW at Brisbane’s Davies Park on February 8 to decide the best Allblacks carnival rugby league side in the country. Former Weipa-based Rio Tinto Alcan worker and Cape Cluster competition Raiders club footballer Keiji Bowie will be one of the trump cards for Badu Island side, the Argun Warriors. but the game is indeed a promoter’s dream. Champion North Queensland team Argun Warriors qualified for the clash after winning the grand final of the Men’s Deadly Choices Arthur Beetson Foundation Queensland Murri rugby league carnival at Ipswich last September. The Warriors were too strong for the Yarrabah Seahawks in the one-sided final, running out comfortable 30-12 victors. Yowies included NRL players Timana Tahu and Reece Robinson along with ex player Wes Patton and they beat Mindaribba Warriors

26-20 in the October 1 final. This coming match will take on the proportions of a Queensland versus NSW State of Origin series encounter, such is the interest amongst Indigenous footballers in both states including on Cape York. Argun Warriors also had NRL footballers in Parramatta star Chris Sandow and Canberra Raiders forward Travis Waddell at the Murri Knockout carnival. Both sides will be without those for the big game. A r g u n Wa r r i o r s stalwart and star centre Keiji Bowie told The Western Cape Bulletin

in late January from Badu Island that players there were training hard preparing for the epic game. “We will have three 17-year olds along with some top players in Ricardo Laza, Maipele Morseu, Guyai Nona, Joe Tamwoy, Bobby Tamwoy and lots of others,” Keiji said. Astute tactician Tala Nona will coach Argun Warriors which will have many supporters from their beloved Badu Island with them in the big smoke. Tala’s son Tremayne Bowie, a brilliant back, and experienced hooker Roy Bowie of Badu descent will also line up

for Argun Warriors. Roy Baira is the brother of Weipa’s based multi-skilled sportsman Jimmy Baira and they both played for Kulipyam at the Cairns Allblacks carnival last October. Argun Warriors are also the reigning Torres Strait Island of Origin champions having defeated Saguci 20-14 in the final at Badu in June 2011. No Island of Origin carnival was held in 2012 due to a lack of volunteers to run it. If they win the big clash Argun Warriors will be the pride of North Queensland, Torres Strait and Cape York.
