GOODLINE’S bearded leader, John Kennedy, has agreed to go under the razor and participate in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave... and he’s not alone. John’s trademark beard has graced his chin for around 25 years, pre-dating most of his children (and Goodline) however he is willing and ready to brave the shave and change his life in order to change the lives of many. Following John’s example Shane Day, Evie Addison and Stretch Noonan have

thrown their hair (or beards) into the ring in an effort to help John meet his fundraising target of $100,000. Although John will be saying goodbye to “the great white” in Perth, a World’s Greatest Shave event has been organised at the Weipa Bowls Club for Saturday, March 16 for John’s three local supporters to lose their locks. “I’m going to have my hair plaited in lots of braids and people will be able to purchase a plait and snip it off,” Evie said. “Hopefully, by the end of the night all the plaits will be gone and we’ll have a bucket-load of cash to throw at the cause.” Once the plaits are gone, Evie’s head will be shaved bald. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so I ﬁgured, why not now?” Hearing of John and Evie’s commitment to the World’s Greatest Shave fellow Goodline employee, Shane Day decided his timehonoured beard should also be sacrificed for the cause, but only if he could talk Western Cape Bulletin manager and Weipa Town Authority deputy mayor Stretch Noonan into joining him. “I approached Stretch about the shave and he agreed to it,” Shane said. “My grand-children are coming to Weipa for

Easter and they are going to get such a shock when they see me without my beard!” Stretch shaved his beard off about six years ago for a fundraiser and is not daunted by the prospect of a hairless chin. “It’s only hair and I know it will grow back – but it probably won’t come back with quite so much colour in it this time around!” Speaking of colour, Cape York Pharmacy’s Scott McCahon has donated a box of coloured hairsprays for the shave night for those who aren’t quite brave enough to shave, but are willing to make a donation to John’s moneymeter and sport a wild new hair colour. The event kicks off at 4pm on Saturday, March 16 with DJ Billy K (Billy Kennedy) providing the dance beats from 7pm, and Goodline’s Vanessa Barton will be making World’s Greatest Shave cupcakes to sell for a donation at the event.

this? I know folks down south who spend a fortune to have a couple of weeks up here, and I get it all for free. The river is just there, five minutes away. Mind you, everywhere in town is five minutes away, but that is part of the charm. Sure they have nice places in the big city, but it is usually a major expedition to reach them, and once you get there, you have to share them with hundreds of other people. If you want to fish, you probably have to queue for a place. Here the fish queue to get on your hook, on the good days at least. I love the feeling that the bush is only ten minutes out of town. In a place like Sydney you can drive half a day and you are still in the suburbs. I can’t ever see myself living down there. I don’t even like to visit. It’s all too big and too crowded. Living like that is

unnatural, unless you’re a termite. Even Cairns is getting a bit citified. They’ve got people down there who go to work every day. Even when the breeze drops and the water is glassy smooth, they go to work. At least we’ve got the sense not to waste a day like that, and every tradie has ‘except for good ﬁshing days’ written into his contract. Yes, we’ve got things to complain about (there are some local government representatives I’d like to send to Melbourne as eternal damnation), but all in all, our biggest problem is not blowing our own trumpet. After all, if you tootle away so that all of Australia can hear, they might come and investigate. Visitors I can cope with, but a ﬂood of city people moving in... that’s another thing altogether.

State Government housing disgrace

TWO properties, owned by the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport, have been allowed to fall into a derelict state, despite the demand for housing in the Weipa area being far from met. The properties, located in Colong Court, Rocky Point, have been sitting vacant and deteriorating for up to six years. Doors are wide open, windows are missing, debris is scattered throughout the properties, and the gardens threaten to engulf the houses. Weipa Town Authority chairman Peter McCulkin, accompanied by WTA chair of engineering and works Stretch Noonan, and Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch inspected the properties last week and were appalled at what they found. “I raised the issue of these two properties in May, 2012, which are amongst a number of Queensland Government properties vacant in Weipa, but so far nothing has been done about this disgrace,” Mr McCulkin said. A third-party source contacted the Queensland Department of Transport regarding the Colong Court properties 12 months ago and was assured something would be done about it “sooner, rather than later” and yet the deteriorating houses remain in limbo. “Over the Christmas period Queensland Transport Department employees attended the township carrying out their duties. “However, instead of using the aforementioned properties, we can only assume they were lodged at paid accommodation because their housing in Rocky Point, Weipa, is a disgrace,” the source said. “The costs related to the paid accommodation component of this stay were no doubt met by the tax payers, as are the cost of deteriorating buildings. “Not to forget the forgone rent these properties could be producing.” Thursday Island

Footy tipping returns in 2013 THE siren is about to sound and The Western Cape Bulletin is proud to announce the commencement of our free NRL and AFL footy tipping competitions. There a couple of changes to this years competitions, the most important one being to the scoring.

In both competitions this year it is very important to remember to put your tips on. Previously, if a tipster did not enter their tips they were given the away games in each code. This year, however, if tipsters fail to enter their tips they will record a zero score. If you miss the ﬁrst game or two of any round it is still worth putting the rest of your tips on to gain points for the remaining games of the round. The other major change is

that we will be awarding prizes to the top four tipsters in both the AFL and NRL free tipping competitions, thanks to generous sponsorship from QantasLink, Mercure Cairns Harbourside, Novotel Palm Cove Resort, Inn Cairns Boutique Apartments, Weipa Bakery, Weipa Gourmet Meats, Carlton & United Breweries, Albatross Bay Resort and the Weipa Bowls Club. Weipa to Cairns flight deregulation – be careful what you wish for WHILE everyone invites competition on our air route to and from Cairns there are a couple of potential issues that I would like people to consider before submitting a submission to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads or signing any petition. The route is currently regulated by the State Government and they impose in their contract that there must be a certain number of flights per week, and the carrier must fly every day. If the route was deregulated carriers are not bound to fly every day, if at all. There is every chance that they may not fly on a Tuesday or Thursday, for example, as these days are generally the quietest days and therefore not profitable. Monday, Friday and Sunday are the best days for passenger numbers. Remember, that once the route is deregulated the airlines will run flights to make sure that their business is profitable. Would you run a flight that historically had single digit passenger numbers? This would make it very hard to see specialists in Cairns or make a meeting etc. Just because we have two airlines flying into Weipa does not mean that we would have more passengers mysteriously appearing to take up these extra seats. Cost per flight hmm…now that leaves a lot to be wondering about. Remember, another carrier can make all the promises in the world, but at the end of the day it is still a business that must make a profit and show returns to their shareholders. State Government should own up to health budget cuts I would like to respond to recent comments made about the Queensland

Government’s savage cuts to health jobs and services. Cape York Hospital and Health Service cited ‘a sudden cut in funds from the Commonwealth Government’ as a reason for this. Having slashed $3 billion from their health budget, it is incredulous that the Queensland Government is continuing to spread misinformation about their cuts. Their own budget papers state this, yet they continue to blame everyone but themselves. In the North, we’ve been hit particularly hard. More than 230 jobs will be axed from the Cairns region, around 35 in the Torres Strait region and more than 200 in the Townsville region. Our thoughts are with the workers and their families who have been impacted by these cuts. It is a difﬁcult time for them. It is time for the Queensland LNP Government to focus on delivering better health services to Queensland families. It’s time they start treating our health workers with respect and stop the offensive debates about the value of frontline versus non-frontline health workers. They all play a critical part in delivering health services to our community. Sacking thousands of health workers across Queensland and cutting funding for services such as breast screening is going to have a serious impact on the health of our community. These decisions are dangerous and short sighted. Premier Newman must stop treating regional Queenslanders in this way. While the Federal Government is delivering record investments in health, the Newman Government is undermining this progress. We deserve ﬁrst class health facilities and we deserve to be treated here in our region when we’re sick and not have to go to Brisbane or another centre. Familiar face in a new role Change to water outage schedule The water outage to Weipa town has been rescheduled for Monday, March 18 (originally advertised for March 11). Please note, the works start date is dependent upon weather and there will be a further update to confirm commencement in the next edition of The Western Cape Bulletin. There will only be just a few days after this edition of The Western Cape Bulletin hits the streets for the community to provide feedback to the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) on the Weipa to Cairns air service. The Minister for Transport, as reported last week, is seeking a submission into the review of this regulated route from the WTA by the March 13. If the response we have had to date is an indication of the general community feeling; you are all very happy with the frequency of flights, reliability of the current service, flight connections to southern destinations and the current

price of flights. If this is, or is not the case, the WTA invites you provide some input into our submission. This is an important issue for the town, as you are aware that the bureaucrats in Queensland Transport have locked us into another two year ‘deal’ as a regulated route with the current sole carrier. Thankfully the Minister responsible has seen some reason and instigated a review into the current and future needs of air travellers to and from Weipa which should have occurred this month anyway. The WTA has certainly been firm in its objections to the handling of this whole process,

handing a two-year extension to the current contract without any consultation whatsoever. After several similar instances by the ‘new’ state government the WTA is very hopeful that some recent discussions with the local Member for Cook David Kempton will have much better outcomes for the residents here in Weipa across a range of issues that were left unresolved by the outgoing Labour government. Having also met with the Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch at the same time on similar issues; we will have to wait and see what he includes in the Coalition’s election “promises” that are going to benefit the residents of Weipa. If you believe the polls he may very well get that chance after the September election. We are looking forward to seeing what those promises might be.

WesTern Cape College is excited to announce that a new staff member has commenced duties in 2013. James Hughes, a man well-known to the Western Cape area for a number of years has been engaged through Scripture Union Queensland to provide extra supplementary support to students, staff, and the greater Western Cape College community. In particular, the Chaplain will be providing support to Year 8 to 12 students at the Western Cape College, Weipa Campus and will work through the student support services department, along with guidance officers, school nurse, responsible behaviour officers, and other support staff at the College. considering the review’s recommendations. “I would also like to thank Ted and his team for the countless hours they have spent ensuring that every voice has been heard. “Since October last year, they have met more than 1,000 volunteer firefighters at meetings in 13 locations and received more than

240 submissions.” Mr Malone said he would like to thank the 3,500 volunteer rural firefighters in Queensland who attended meetings or gave their input. Any changes resulting from the review are expected to be implemented prior to the 2013-2014 bushfire season.

Small business green tape slashed THE Queensland state Government this week announced two initiatives to reduce green tape for Queensland small businesses. Twenty environmentally relevant activity (ERA) thresholds for activities that do not pose a high environmental risk, such as motor vehicle workshops, printing and abrasive blasting, were deleted following extensive consultation with industry. “Amendments to the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008 will mean that, from March, more than 9,400 small business operators will no longer need to apply for a licence or pay an application fee,

and no longer need to submit an annual return,” Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell said. Other small businesses, such as small tourism operators, bed and breakfasts’ and caravan parks would also benefit from reduced regulatory costs, as fees for small sewage treatment plant operators have been halved, a saving of more than $6 million in annual fees. “Although businesses conducting these activities will no longer need to obtain an environmental approval, they must still uphold environmental standards,” Mr Powell said.

Mr Powell said the environmental standards would be enforced under a new Regulatory Strategy which reflected a fundamental shift in the way environmental and heritage regulatory activities were undertaken. “It will make it quicker for companies to get environmental approvals and industry will be able to take greater responsibility for its environmental performance,” he said. Mr Powell said the initiatives would also enable departmental officers to spend more time inspecting licensed sites to make sure they are complying with their approvals.

Jungle Perch on the comeback trail ReSeARcheRS at the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s (DAFF) Bribie Island Research centre have bred the first ever, captive Jungle Perch fingerlings. Research leader Dr Michael Hutchison said the 35mm fingerlings were reared from fertilised eggs through to a size suitable for stocking into rivers over a period of 60 days. “Previously no larvae have been reared beyond six days old and a few millimetres long,” Dr Hutchison said. Jungle Perch are an iconic angling fish reaching more than 3kg in weight. Their habitat includes coastal rivers and streams from Cape York to northern New South Wales. They spend most of their life in freshwater but migrate to salt water to spawn. “Over the years, Jungle Perch have become very scarce but now there is the potential to reintroduce this species to rivers in southeastern Queensland and in the Mackay-Whitsunday region,” Dr Hutchison said. “There are still significant challenges ahead to improve

IndIgenous artists from Far north Queensland are encouraged to enter the nation’s most prestigious Indigenous Art Award, the Telstra national Aboriginal & Torres strait Islander Art Award (nATsIAA). The award, which was established by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in 1984, recognises the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and promotes appreciation and understanding of the quality and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art throughout Australia, with support from principal sponsor Telstra. Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Far North Queensland, Amanda Albon said the award creates an exciting national platform on which emerging and established artists have the opportunity to showcase their culture and creative talents. “2013 marks the 22nd year Telstra has supported the NATSIAA and we are proud to have had the opportunity to meet and profile

Back in the Day CAPE York Peninsula will always have an important place in Australia’s history, as the site of the ﬁrst authenticated landing by Europeans on the Australian continent. This landing and the associated brief explorations and observations took place in the early 17th century, by Dutch traders and navigators. The impetus for this early contact with the Australian mainland was trade, with Dutch traders in Java and the so called Spice Islands, interested to know what opportunities might lie to the south. Consequently, Willem Janszoon received orders from the Dutch East India Company to undertake such a voyage of exploration to investigate trade possibilities. Commanding the Duyfken (pictured top right), meaning Little Dove, Janszoon sailed in March 1606 across what was later to become known as the Torres Strait. Becoming somewhat confused as to precisely where they were, Janszoon and

his crew sailed for some two hundred miles along an unknown and uncharted coastline in their small vessel, which weighed only about fifty tonnes. Brief landings were made during which, in a prelude of later conflict, these Dutch visitors clashed with the local Aborigines, with some on the Dutch side being killed. We are also able to speculate that there may have been similar loss of life on the Aboriginal side. Continuing their voyage along this unknown coast, they noted a prominent land projection which Janszoon named Cape Keer-Weer (Turn-Again or TurnAround), perhaps influenced by the recent conflict and loss of life. Later, one of the Dutch East India Company’s agents, John Saris, reported on the Duyfken’s voyage and its outcomes. Saris reported that there were limited opportunities in this newly discovered and apparently dangerous location, saying “in sending their men on shore to entreate of

trade, there were nine of them killed…so they were constrained to return, ﬁnding no good to be done there”. Over the next few decades, other Dutch ships would sail along the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. However, with no gold, spices or other trade opportunities to exploit, the Dutch were apparently not interested in undertaking any further detailed or focused exploration. Cape York Peninsula, as the place where these ﬁrst European contacts took place, will always be important in the history of Australia.

WE’RE still reading from Mark Ch 14 vs 27 to the end of the chapter. The time is when they had just ﬁnished the Last Supper and were headed for the Mount of Olives where the Lord often took his disciples to pray. The Lord told them that very shortly they were going to deny that they know him, and run away, but Peter and the other disciples told Jesus that no way was that going to happen. (vs 27-31).

In vs 32-41 we read of the Lord praying in the Garden of Gethsemane with his disciples, and he went ahead with three of them, Peter, James, and John, (the inner circle) to pray to the Father. The Lord could see that to take the sins of the world, past, present, and future upon his shoulders would cause him to be separated from his Father, something that had never happened before in all eternity! That is hell!

He prayed so hard for the Father to ﬁnd some other way to take away the sins of the world that Luke reported that sweat like drops of blood fell from his brow and an angel came to give him support, because the pressure was so great! (The medical term today for such a thing happening is called “hematohidrosis” and apparently is not so rare). Take note that Luke, being a doctor, and no doubt taking professional interest, was the

only gospel writer to report this phenomenon. (Luke Ch 22 v 44). At the end of his prayers the Lord accepted that above all, the Father’s will takes ﬁrst place, and these words of the Lord has helped committed Christians to make decisions over the years that put God’s will ﬁrst; “Yet not want I want, but want you want”. DO you think a holiday and detox don’t go together? Think again. How do your holidays look? My last few trips away are usually dominated by rushing through the shops, being tempted to eat and drink most of the things that you cannot get here in Weipa, do all the activities which are hard to do here, along with catching up with family and friends. I find myself sometimes having a few drinks with people that I love, and people I could go without, and often eat much more than intended. By the time I get home I feel like I need a holiday. This time I am going to approach my holiday differently. In the next month I will be going on a study holiday in Bali where I will learn more about raw foods and about how to combine foods to make a super healthy being out of me and every one that is interested in that path. I’ll be teaching yoga and learning in a small group of people to detox and relax. Prior to this I am taking a week off in Bali to do nothing at all. Now, that’s challenging for most - and if you know me you may think it is impossible. I am taking on the challenge. Elizabeth Gilbert writes in her book “Eat, Pray, Love”: “Il bel far niente means ‘the beauty of doing nothing’... [it] has always been a cherished Italian ideal. The beauty of doing nothing is the goal of all your work, the final accomplishment for which you are most highly congratulated. The more exquisitely and delightfully you can do nothing, the higher your life’s achievement.” You don’t necessarily need to be rich in order to experience this, either. After years of travelling, training, moving, studying and working, I will give this one a try. All of us could benefit from a healthy journey, weaning ourselves from the urban world of constant communication, daily caffeine fixes and end-of-week beer celebrations, experiencing some serious me-time, to evaluate goals and review achievements and just be.

You don’t have to go to Bali either, there are many health retreats in Australia or elsewhere in the world. Holidays like this may even be easy on your wallet as most of them include full catering and you are staying away from shops and bars which are some of the reasons holidays can be expensive. Before you consider a retreat or detox holiday, think about what you want to achieve. Would you like to lose a few kilos, increase your fitness, give your liver a break, de-stress or simply have some “me” time? Then you can plan and choose what is best for you. There are retreats that will help you to shift excess baggage, well-being retreats which focus on healthy food, gentle movements and a lot of time for yourself, yoga retreats, meditation retreats, and of course detox retreats. The list is endless. But be warned, some may feel like a challenge, especially if you choose a detox retreat, as the toxins released from the body may make you feel lethargic and irritable. But usually by the end of a five to 10-day detox you will notice a distinct increase in energy which you have not experienced before. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you when I return... until then stay happy and healthy, and keep learning about what is good for your body and how you can improve your well-being. It is amazing what knowledge is at out fingertips. Use it for the most important instrument you will ever own - your body; and the most valuable thing you can think about – your health and the health of your loved ones. Market Update – The Big Picture THE so-called ‘great rotation’ dominated our market during february. Cash has been piling into equities in search of a better yield. With term deposit rates barely above 4 per cent, anyone with cash in the top tax bracket is going backwards after taking tax and inﬂation into account. Of course that was a better alternative for those who felt not gaining in cash was better than taking a bath in equities. But with the major players of China, the US and Europe looking reasonably settled, the high dividend paying stocks have started to look good. Interestingly, over the last 12 months or so, the once disparate yields on the high dividend sectors – ﬁnancials, property, telcos and utilities – have converged to about 5.5 per cent. Stock prices could be preserved at these dividend levels but further capital growth looks out of the window for many, many months unless earnings and payout ratios improve. Resource stocks look well priced and China has thrown them a life line. Our market ran much harder in February (up 4.6 per cent) than the major world markets but we have more to catch up. The Dow Jones came within a whisker of its all-time high

in the last few hours of February. What is really good for investor conﬁdence is that there were two really bad days in the last week of February for the ASX 200 but the market recovered quickly. The market fell -2.3 per cent on the 21st. On the 26th it fell 77 points near the open but rallied to close above 5,000. The market ﬁnished the month at 5,104 – a fresh four and a half year high. Our fear and volatility indexes are still in the zone to be able to sustain a rally but we do have the market quite overpriced at nearly +6 per cent. Much of the global euphoria is due to the release of hard data: housing and durable goods in the US; mammoth trade data and PMI reads in China; Iron Ore prices trading above $150 all month compared to the $87 low of 2012; recent best confidence reads in Germany and Australia – etc. But not all data has been good. Retail in the US and Australia softened. Europe’s gdp, at -0.6 per cent, Means their recession continues. On the soft info side, markets were temporarily spooked by an Italian election that failed to pick a winner. The continued bickering on Capitol Hill about ‘sequestration’

(phased in $85bn expenditure cuts from start of March) doesn’t help – but again the market is coping. Why? The US Q4 reporting season just ﬁnishing was strong. Our reporting season is all but over and it did us proud. Earnings were more or less in line with expectations but, importantly, companies are starting to give guidance about the future after a few years of “it’s all too hard”. But there were casualties. The CEO’s of both RIO and BHP got the chop but Kloppers reportedly got a $75m payout – almost as much as the mining tax collected in its first six months - $126m! Few analysts are predicting a rate cut this month, interestingly, JP Morgan is predicting one cut in May and then three increases in 2014. Bernanke, chairman of the US Fed has also started to mumble about increases in its rates – but not yet. SHARKS have become the underdog of the oceans. They reproduce slowly and are being targeted for their fins and caught accidentally in the hunt for fish. Now, researchers have created the first global estimate of the carnage. By combining data from fisheries organisations and the scientific literature, the team reports that 97 million sharks were killed in 2010 and perhaps as many as 273 million. “This is the best attempt, published to date, to bring together the available data to quantify fisheries impacts on sharks at a global scale,” says John Musick, a shark expert at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point in the USA. The dire figure implies that more sharks are being taken than are born, jeopardizing their future. George Burgess, of the Florida Museum of Natural History, points out that the calculation required numerous assumptions, including a single weight estimate for all sharks. Nevertheless, Burgess says, experts agree that sharks are in deep trouble. “It’s just a matter of how bad off.” The authors argue that sharks need stronger protections, such as the kind of international agreement that has protected whales, or restrictions to the trade of their fins and meat. Several such proposals will be considered this month as the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora meets in Bangkok.

Weipa training for Cape soldiers From February 23 to march 2, Bravo Company of the 51st Battalion, The Far North Queensland regiment held their Force Preservation Training. Soldiers from the Company paraded at the Weipa Depot and included participants from Weipa, Napranum, Mapoon, Lockhart River, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. On arrival at Weipa, the soldiers conducted Army-mandated training and covered subjects such as workplace health and safety, heat awareness, fraud and ethics, suicide awareness and much more. For the rest of the week, the training consisted of first aid, navigation and radio revision, four-wheel driving, infantry minor tactics, which included patrolling techniques, obstacle crossings, deception drills, and moving in and occupying an observation post. Two of the favourite aspects of the training were the boating activity out

from Evans Landing, and the shooting conducted at RAAF Base Scherger. The marksmanship training consisted of both day and night practices and included utilisation of the latest night fighting equipment which enables soldiers to both see and shoot, via an infra-red laser, in the dark. At the end of the week, PTE James Kawangka was presented with an award for excellent performance during a border security patrol in 2010. While a little late, the award was much deserved recognition for a job well done. During the week a number of potential recruits came through the front door and have now started the process of joining the Army Reserve. Community meeting to view Draft Rocky Point Sport and Recreation Precinct Plan IN July 2012, Sport and Recreation groups were consulted on their potential use and aspirations for the new Cyclone Shelter constructed with State and Federal Government allocated funds. The aim was to develop a Draft Rocky Point Sport and Recreation Precinct Plan to determine how this facility can best service sport and recreation in the community, and how the new facility and future management will integrate with other nearby facilities and spaces to enhance the participation experience for residents.

The Cyclone Shelter is nearing completion and preparation for handover to the Weipa Town Authority, and the Draft Precinct Plan is now ready to be presented to the community for discussion and feedback. The Weipa community is invited to attend a meeting to be held at 6.30pm on Monday, March 11 at the Council Chambers, Hibberd Drive, Rocky Point to discuss the Draft Precinct Plan. to look in the estuaries. Jim Borthwick took some of the boys out and landed a 16kg Spaniard and some Tuskers but were hammered by the Sharks. In the rivers things are fishable, and although the tides have made things difficult for the land-based anglers, there were some nice fish landed. I went for a drive to the Andoom bridge where I watched a lady angler land a legal Barra on a live Mullet. Trying to find live bait has been particularly difficult but there are a few on Red Beach. The Mission River bridge has been producing some nice fish with some nice Barra taking live baits and lures. Grant Phelps fished the bridge the other night taking a nice Barra on a Yozouri crystal minnow. He also said they caught a few small Grunter and Jewfish on bait. Over on Gongbung Beach Sue Robins Price and Billy Lotowa landed some nice fish

on peeled Prawns. Billy also lost a good Barra in Grandma’s Creek. Billy had never used a rod before but by the end of the day he was casting like a champion, so much so he went and bought himself a new rod and reel the next day. There are still some small Prawns around Rocky Point and the Mission River bridge,

and Hornibrook would be worth a throw. I was also told that the Skardon River is holding some very large Prawns but I haven’t seen the photos so I can’t be totally sure if it is correct, and it is a long way to go to ﬁnd out. ‘Til next week smooth seas, light breeze and tight lines. – Cheers China

Again this week there have been very few reports but I was given some, and they have come in, so thanks guys. Jayson Keough took his son’s Year 1 teacher from last year, Renee Milne with her husband Josh to some offshore reefs where young Braydon landed a 75cm Fingermark with the help of dad, who was afraid he might lose his favourite bottom rod. Chris Allwood, skippering the new Tackle World boat, had two people from Theodore on a half-day charter and they landed some nice reef fish, including a 2kg Coral Trout, and topped the day off with a 65cm Barra.
