Trunding Creek croc encounter

By Giembra Busmer

Close encounter: these photos were captured by the fishermen at Trunding Creek last Thursday, March 7 at around 4pm.

A COUPLE of local men almost got more than they bargained for during a fishing trip last Thursday afternoon. The fishermen were casting for bait on the western side of Trunding Creek when one of them spotted what he estimated to be a three-metre crocodile rapidly approaching them through the water. “Luckily I had polarised sunglasses on and the water was clear as I would never have seen it,” one of the fishermen said. “There was only about two centimetres of water over the croc and even though it was moving really quickly there was not a ripple to be seen. If the water had been muddy I reckon it would have had us,” he said. The fishermen beat a quick retreat further up the bank of the creek as the crocodile emerged from the water. “We weren’t sticking around after that – it was a close one,” the fisherman said. There have been several incidents involving crocodiles at Trunding Creek in the past, and people are again reminded to be cautious when fishing or boating in any of our waterways. Crocodile sightings can be reported to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection at any time on 1300 130 372.

Search for missing Kowanyama woman concluded

shop 2 mcnamara centre ph 4069 7651 fax 4069 9958

THE search for a woman missing on Cape York for four weeks has been concluded with no trace of her whereabouts uncovered. Twenty-three year old Allison Bernard disappeared on February 10 between Archer River, near Coen, and her hometown of Kowanyama. A Cairns District Crime Prevention spokesperson reported that the extensive search involved Police, SES and defence force personnel searching on foot as well as quad bike and four-wheel drive vehicles. The Police dive squad also searched dams and waterways in the area and helicopters assisted with the search from the air. “Unfortunately in these situations a finite time needs to be applied to searches,

taking into account the probability of human survival beyond reasonable time frames and so on,” the spokesperson said. “The decision was made by the search co-ordination team that there was no benefit to be gained by further searching and that all that could reasonably have been done had been done.” Inquiries in relation to Allison’s disappearance will continue and the file will remain open, however searches will only be resumed following the receipt of further information in the future. Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.

The search for missing Kowanyama woman Allison Bernard has been called off.

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. What is it about some Aussie blokes that has them living on the edge of a knife? Life goes one way and he will spend the next 50 years in suburbia. Probably with the same wife and surrounded by kids that are probably his. And the alternative? He will

end up in a modern humpy, somewhere on the edge of civilisation. (Not that anyone like that lives in the secret places of Cape York. We are all very ordinary and normal up here.) Still, I’m curious. How does it happen? Is there something

Ph: 4069 7471

strange about us, something that doesn’t happen to folk in other countries? It seems quite normal for us to live in cities - we are one of the most urban people in the world - where we love, marry and have kids. Then a large percentage of the husbands take off into the bush where the real work of Australia happens, and their families stay at home. We are famous for living apart. Our blokes don’t need female company, as long as we have our beer and our mates. At least it is better now than it used to be. Now we have flyin, fly-out workers. Not so long ago, it was fly in and stay there until the job was done. The old timers really lived their work, and family was something that happened during the holidays.

I suppose if you do that for long, you get funny ideas about where your home is and where you belong. Perhaps you travel back to town one time and realise that the Missus is getting on just fine without you. A few harsh words, and the bush claims another single man. Does that mean our cities are full of single women of a certain age? I suppose it must do, although I’ve never spent enough time down south to find out. I’d rather stay up here where the work is, where people live together and get the job done. And if there a few cranky old Joes living around the edge of town, who cares? At least they add a little colour to the place, and lend a hand catching the fish and getting the beer drunk.

Napranum supermarket construction begins Building work has begun on a brand new supermarket at Napranum, the biggest ever to be built in the Cape York Indigenous community. The Island & Cape store, which is being funded by the Queensland Government and Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, will supply ‘/approximately 850 local residents with groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products, clothing and much more. Island & Cape Retail Operations Manager Craig Oxlade said the 550 square metre supermarket will also create more than 20 full-time and part-time positions in Napranum. “This is an extremely exciting development for the local residents, one they have been waiting a long time for,” he said. “Residents of Napranum currently have to travel to Weipa to shop, so this store will greatly benefit the community.” Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council interviewed prospective businesses to run the store as part of the new supermarket process, with Island & Cape winning the contract. “The Council said they chose Island & Cape over other organisations because they were impressed by our track record of running outstanding community-based stores, and our strong commitment to employing and training local

people,” Mr Oxlade said. Work on the new supermarket is expected to be officially completed for a grand opening in June this year. Mr Oxlade said there will be nationally-accredited training offered to the store’s new employees, as is the case in all Island & Cape stores. “Island & Cape will also be investing approximately $350,000 in new equipment to fit-out the new building, and then it will hold about $500,000 in stock when filled,” he said. “The store will have the latest point-of-sale systems,

including wireless linked ordering system, with integrated security monitoring throughout the complex. “We’d also like to thank the local Council, who are making a significant investment in this project over and above the State Government grant.” Mr Oxlade said Island & Cape has a proud nine-year history of working closely with remote communities across the region. “Island & Cape always plays an active role in the communities where we operate,” he said. “We continually invest

in the communities, through infrastructure, employment and social contribution. Giving back is a core value of Island & Cape.” The Island & Cape retail division provides Indigenous communities across Far North Queensland with food and goods through retail stores, supermarkets and takeaways. Other Island & Cape stores in the region are located on Badu Island, Dauan Island, Horn Island and Yorke Island in the Torres Strait, and in Aurukun, Wujal Wujal and Hopevale.

Site performance drawcard at community forum

General manager Weipa operations Gareth Manderson addresses the forum.

Providing a summary of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s 2012 site performance and activities proved to be a popular topic with more than 40 residents attending the first quarterly community forum for the year. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Gareth Manderson said he was pleased with the turnout and the feedback that was provided by the attendees. “Our forums are a great

opportunity to hear what issues matter most to our community and what is of current concern,” Mr Manderson said. The South of Embley Project was a popular topic with attendees asking questions relating to the logistics of operating a mine 40 kilometres south of Weipa such as shift rosters, how staff will travel to work and maritime management.” “The forum allowed us to provide an update on the South of Embley Project including

the State and Commonwealth government approval processes, and the process which will follow.” Other issues raised by residents included safety on the mine and the Weipa housing shortage. “Improving our poor safety performance is a key focus area for us and I was really impressed to see attendees interested in what we are doing about it. Particularly as they have family and friends that work for us and do not want them to get hurt at work,” Mr Manderson said. “I encourage those unable to attend the community forum to provide feedback on our site’s 2012 performance and about the operations in general, so that we can effectively shape our future forums and choose relevant key topics.” To provide feedback, or for more information about the topics discussed at the forum, people can visit the Community Relations Building (located behind Weipa Bowls Club), phone the freecall hotline (1800 707 633) or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com

Weipa shaves for a cure

Members of the Weipa Woolworths Worlds Greatest Shave team with the Easter Bunny.

THE team at Weipa Woolworths are getting into the spirit of the World’s Greatest Shave this Saturday and have already surpassed their original fundraising target. Weipa Woolworths manager Jenny Everist said she and the team had set their target at $1000 but have had to increase it to $2000 due to an overwhelming response to the fundraiser. The Woolies World’s Greatest Shave kicks off at 1.30pm this Saturday with Jenny the first to go under the razor as her assistant manager Dudley, assisted by the Easter Bunny wield the clippers for a ‘number one’. Several other team members will be shaving and more are opting to colour their hair for the cause so come to the

store and make a donation. Weipa CapeAbility will be lending their support to the team, collecting donations at the checkouts, and Weipa Community Care will be selling raffle tickets to support the Weipa Woolworths team. Following the Woolworths shave the clippers head to the Weipa Bowls Club at 4pm where the Weipa Warriors (Evie Addison, Shane Dey and Stretch Noonan) will be lopping their locks (or beards) to add to John Kennedy’s Goodline total. DJ Billy K will be providing music from 7pm. Lend your support to both events this Saturday and help raise funds for the Queensland Leukeamia Foundation.

How to be Crocodile Wise In areas where estuarine crocodiles may be present you should: • Be aware of crocodiles – keep your eyes open, you might not be able to see them, but they are there. • Do not feed or otherwise interfere with crocodiles, small or large. • Avoid areas where large crocodiles or their nests have been seen • Camp at least 50 metres from the waters edge • Stand at least a few metres back from the waters edge when fishing and don’t stand on logs overhanging deep pools. • Do not clean fish, prepare food or engage in other activities on the waters edge and adjacent banks. • Dispose of food scraps (including fish) away from areas where people gather. • Swim only in areas of shallow rapids well away from deep water • Swim in groups rather than alone • Keep arms and legs inside boat hulls.

Cape York health services restructured The Cape York Hospital and Health Service (HHS) will streamline service delivery to focus more strongly on direct patient care. Cape York HHS chief executive Susan Turner said an extensive organisational review by consultant Ernst and Young recently had been conducted within the HHS. Ernst and Young had been engaged to help identify more effective and cost-efficient ways of delivering health care to Cape York communities, she said. “This is part of a broad process to restructure our services so that we can deliver them more efficiently, reduce duplication and focus on the core areas of acute care,’’ she said. “As part of that process, a total of 27.5 Full Time Equivalent positions were identified as being surplus to the health service’s needs.’’ She said expressions of interest in a voluntary redundancy had been received and would be accepted for 20 of those surplus positions. “Unfortunately, staff in the remaining 7.5 FTE affected surplus positions will face retrenchment unless they can be redeployed to other areas. “However, there are a number of positions within the HHS that are unaffected by the redundancy process but are currently vacant. “Staff whose positions have been made redundant and who do not wish to take a redundancy package will have the opportunity

Cape York Hospital and Health Service chief executive Susan Turner.

to apply to fill those vacancies, should they have the necessary skills to do so.’’ Ms Turner said five of the 27.5 FTE affected positions were in clinical areas, while the remainder were all either administrative or operational. “Three of these clinical positions are senior Directors of Nursing who have elected to take a voluntary redundancy package as we restructure our nursing workforce to focus more on direct patient care and less on back-office management duties,’’ she said. “A further two clinical nurses within the sexual and women’s health service and the mental health service also have elected to take a voluntary redundancy, so we have redesigned the workload within these services to absorb the duties previously filled by the departing staff. “As we are still in negotiations with some staff it would be unfair

and a breach of confidentiality for us to be any more specific about the positions involved in this process.’’ Ms Turner said the restructure of the Cape York HHS would achieve an overall budget saving of about $2.5 million. She said union representatives and all staff had been advised of the decision on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2013. “Obviously, this is deeply unsettling for people and I want to offer my assurances we will support all staff affected, including those who are not taking redundancies but whose workplaces are affected by the departure of colleagues,’’ she said. “We intend to be as compassionate and understanding as possible as we work through the complexities surrounding these types of changes. “Throughout this process, we have been very mindful of both our industrial obligations and our obligations to affected staff. “I would like to assure all Cape York residents and the rest of our staff that, painful as this process of adjustment may be for us internally, it will have absolutely no impact on direct service delivery. “Indeed, the savings that will be achieved will allow for sensible streamlining and realigning of our service delivery systems and processes. “All this change we believe will be at no cost to our core priorities of delivering improved patient care and patient outcomes.’’

Report not so healthy for rural Australians Substantiated child abuse and neglect rises ABORIGINAL and Torres Strait Islander children were almost eight times as likely to be the subject of substantiated child abuse and neglect as non-Indigenous children in 2011-12, and 10 times as likely to be in out-of-home care at June 30, 2012. This one of the findings in a report into substantiated child abuse and neglect in Australia, which has found it has risen with very young children most likely to be the subject of a substantiation, according to a report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The report, Child protection Australia 2011-12, shows that over the past 12 months, the number of children who were the subject of substantiated abuse increased from 31,500 to 37,800-a rate of 7.4 per 1000 children. In 2011-12, children aged under one year were most likely to be the subject of a substantiation, with a rate of 13.2 per 1000 children in this age group, up from 12 per 1,000 in 2010-11. “A notification to a department is considered ‘substantiated’ when, after an investigation, it is concluded that there is sufficient reason to believe the child has been, is being,

or is likely to be abused, neglected, or otherwise harmed,” said AIHW spokesperson Tim Beard. “In contrast, older children, aged 15-17, were least likely to be the subject of a substantiation, with a rate of 3.2 per 1000 children in 2011-12,’ Mr Beard said. At June 30, 2012, there were nearly 40,000 children in out-ofhome care. Most (90 per cent) were on care and protection orders. The time a child has spent in outof-home care varied – while 38 per cent of children in out-of-home care had been in a continuous placement for five or more years, a further 19 per cent had been in their current placement for less than 12 months. Across Australia, the vast majority (93 per cent) of children in out-of-home care were placed in home-based care such as with foster carers or relatives/kin. This follows a similar pattern to that observed in previous years. “Our report shows that many of these carers take on responsibility for multiple children. At June 30, 2012, around half of all foster carer households had multiple foster children, with 4 per cent of all households having five or more foster children,” Mr Beard said.

The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) has welcomed this week’s release of the National Health Performance Authority’s Healthy Communities report, saying it is a timely reminder that there is more work to be done to ensure rural and remote Australians have even adequate access to local health services. “The key message from this report is that where Australians live has a noticeable impact on whether they will get care when they need it, within acceptable waiting times and at a price they can afford” RDAA president, Dr Sheilagh Cronin, said. Amongst other things, the respondents to the survey that lived in rural areas indicated that: • 20 per cent of people surveyed living in mostly large remote areas, with middle or lower socioeconomic status, thought they waited longer than acceptable for a GP appointment compared with 13 per cent of people surveyed living in areas of high urban density and higher socioeconomic status. (It is worth noting that people living in rural and remote areas probably already have lower expectations about access to healthcare in the first place than people living in cities).

RDDA president, Dr Sheilagh Cronin.

• 11 per cent of people surveyed living in mostly large remote areas, with middle or lower socioeconomic status, delayed or did not see a GP due to cost compared to 8 per cent of people surveyed living in areas of high urban density and higher socioeconomic status. The survey responses also indicated that, the more ‘rural’ you go: • the harder it is to access health services • the less GP attendances there are per person • the less expenditure on GP attendances there are per person • the less after-hours attendances there are per person • the less expenditure on GP after-hours attendances there are per person “It is clear that Australians living in rural and remote regions

are still facing much greater difficulties in accessing local affordable services compared to urban communities,” Dr Cronin said. “The new Medicare Local agencies have now been made responsible for the provision quality health services and after-hours care, but we need more data to be collected now, so that we can measure their ability to achieve better health outcomes across their population groups. “RDAA has put forward strategies to improve rural health outcomes by promoting the recruitment and retention of a rural medical workforce that has the necessary skills and personal and professional support to be able to provide appropriate services to these communities”. We call on both the Government and the Opposition to take on board RDAA’s strategies to address this situation over the course of this federal election year, and commit to real measures that make a direct improvement to health outcomes in rural and remote communities. “We are very keen to work with both sides of Government to develop some great policy reforms and initiatives that would really make a difference at a local level.”

FEDERAL ELECTION – September 14, 2013

Greens announce Leichhardt candidate THE Queensland Greens have selected small businesswoman and sustainability student Johanna Kloot as their candidate for the seat of Leichhardt. Johanna Kloot was preselected unopposed by Far North Queensland local branch. “I am very pleased to be selected to represent the Greens in Leichhardt at the upcoming federal election”, said Johanna. “I know the importance of preparing for changing times ahead. Ensuring our community is best placed to tackle the climate challenges that will come our way is very important to me.” “The real and measurable effects of climate change are unmistakable in the north. Leichhardt has higher rising background temperatures compared to the rest of Australia and the world. Farmers are aware of the changes affecting their land.” Johanna is a passionate supporter of farmers. “It is the people who work their

Confusion over logging proposal PEOPLE I speak to are confused about the nature of the logging proposed for re-commencement in Far North Queensland. It is neither rainforest nor selective. The state government proposal, with no Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service participation in the five year harvest plans, is targeted at the clear-felling of sensitive ecotone forests in the Herberton, Ravenshoe and Kuranda areas. These are mostly wet sclerophyll habitats, which is our rarest regional type of forest, wedged between rainforest and dry sclerophyll. As well as devastating significant habitat for native wildlife, including cassowaries, there are far better timber alternatives to destroying fragile,

land who know it best”. Johanna knows what primary producers and Greens can accomplish when they come together. She points to the campaign to stop the CSG industry taking over farming land as an example. Johanna is seeking meetings with representatives of local fishing groups to talk about fishing policies and will be talking with representatives of farming organisations including the peak body for horticulture, Growcom, in the coming weeks. Johanna also seeks to work with Indigenous communities in raising the profile of Indigenous recognition and to create partnerships in which tens of thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge is appropriately valued. Johanna’s vision of an inclusive community working towards food and job security through progressive thinking makes her the best candidate to represent the people of Leichhardt.

native forests - the sustainable plantation industry. To propose systematic logging of our precious forests without proper process or public consultation is extraordinary in the modern age where, more and more, we place value on these precious, diminishing habitats that are also a rich source of income and employment in the tourism sector. Stop the job cuts AS the ALP’s candidate for Leichhardt I am calling on Queensland Premier Campbell Newman to stop cutting jobs and start delivering better health services for locals in Weipa. The three billion dollars the Newman Government had slashed from its health budget is risking lives in the region.

Everyone I talk to knows someone who has been sacked or has been impacted by a service that has been cut by the Newman LNP Government. We are being hit hard and my thoughts are with the workers and their families who have been impacted by these cuts. The Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch had been far too silent on the issue. It’s time Warren Entsch took up the fight for local health workers by calling on his LNP colleagues to focus on delivering health services and stop these cuts. These are real people we’re talking about here. The LNP Government is undermining the progress being made to improve our health system. One of the first acts of the LNP Government after being elected last year was to sack more than 4,000 health workers and cut funding to breast screening services and other preventative health programs.

These short sighted, irresponsible decisions will have a serious impact on our community. It’s time the LNP Government started to treat locals with respect and showed some commitment to improving health outcomes. The Federal Labor Government is delivering record funding to Queensland – it will increase by 21 per cent over the next four years, an extra $600 million. The Newman Government should be using this unprecedented investment in Queensland health services to deliver better outcomes for patients, including here in Weipa. It is becoming clearer that Campbell Newman’s cuts in Queensland will be the blueprint for Tony Abbott’s Australia. We can’t let Tony Abbott do to Australia what Campbell Newman has done to Queensland. Billy Gordon, ALP Candidate for Leichhardt

Happy social life for people over 70 PEOPLE aged 70 and over are happier than those in their 50s and 60s despite being more likely to live alone and have poorer health, new research shows. The findings were released in the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report Staying Connected: Social Engagement and Wellbeing Among Mature Age Australians.

Chief executive Michael O’Neill said the results were surprising. “This older cohort is more likely to report socialising as much as they want with all the friends they want or need, so overall the quality of their social relationships is higher than for younger people,” he said. “But the study raised some

worrying concerns about the well-being of people aged in their 50s who were more likely to feel isolated and lack companionship,” Mr O’Neill said. “Possible reasons for this include job stress or unemployment, sharing their household with children and the hours involved in caring for their elderly parents.”

Getting your finances into shape As the New Year rolls through it is important to look at your household’s financial health. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, debt owed by Australian households has risen over the last 18 years by almost six-fold*. So when you are assessing the financial health of your household consider some of the following tips. Review your cash flow Looking at your own income and expenses is the first step in budgeting and it will allow you to really see whether you are in significant debt or are managing ok. Take control of your debt Getting debt under control in the current climate needs to be a priority. Top tips to do this are: • Continue to keep your repayments at the same level

• Try to get ahead on your repayments so you have a bit of a buffer • Be realistic about the time it will take you to pay off your mortgage • Work out a plan to get rid of non-productive debt as ongoing credit card debt will really eat into any surplus funds you have. Protect your assets Many Australians are happy to insure assets like their home and contents and even car but what many are unprepared to do is insure their livelihood. Only 14 per cent of Australians have a life insurance policy in place. Sadly, the only life insurance cover many Australians have is through their superannuation fund. Key tips for managing your money

• It’s never too late to start saving. Small regular amounts will increase your total savings over the longer term. • Determine what you would like to achieve over the coming months and focus on your goals. • If in doubt, always seek professional advice from a financial adviser. For more information on taking control of your debt or other financial services, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam.woodhouse@infocus. com.au. HISTORY / OPINION

Back in the Day

Marine Logistics

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

The Musgrave Road House is a remnant of a series of permanent telegraph stations that were situated along the old Cape York Telegraph Line, completed in 1886 and closed in 1929, and which linked Queensland with the rest of the world. Once open, the telegraph line needed constant maintenance to ensure that the vital communication link remained open. This was to be a constant challenge with gangs of well trained and experienced linesmen dedicated to the maintenance of the line itself, as well as its service track. Replacement line and equipment had to be transported over long distances, through rough country. Also, as refrigeration was non-existent, the transporting and storage of food was an on-going issue. In addition to the supplies needed by the maintenance gangs, the actual telegraphic stations themselves needed to be regularly supplied. The work was never ending with poles, line and equipment regularly falling victim to the harsh conditions. Horses were used heavily to transport linesmen and equipment and the temporary workers’ camps, as well as the permanent telegraph stations, needed to be strategically situated, for

example close to water. Accommodation for the maintenance gangs varied but appears to have improved over time. In the early period of the line’s existence, semi-permanent camps were common, built roughly of local materials with canvas or bark roofs. By the mid 1920s, things had improved comparatively, with accommodation and storage of goods and equipment being within more solidly built permanent buildings. Notwithstanding this gradual improvement in accommodation for the maintenance gangs, it must have been a welcome respite for them to stay temporarily at a permanent telegraph station along the way. It should be remembered how dangerous the work could be and some workers were injured or killed. For instance, Sam Thompson was killed in a fall from a horse in around December 1918 and was buried close to the Musgrave Telegraph Station, now the Musgrave Roadhouse. The photograph above, taken in around 1924, shows one of these telegraph maintenance camps, in the vicinity of the Jardine River, with the figure posing for the camera believed to be George Baxter, who was a linesman in the mid 1920s.

IN the Garden of Gethsemane the Lord prayed hard and long to the Father to find some other way to remove the impact of the world’s sins on people, but was determined that the Father’s will come first. He then had a go at his disciples who could not stay awake with him in prayer by saying to Peter, “ “Simon, are you asleep? Weren’t you able to stay awake for even one hour?” And then he said to the rest, ‘Keep watch, and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Verses 37-38 are a wake

up call today for many Christians who say that they can’t (won’t?) find the time to give to God some moments of quiet reflection and just sitting in God’s presence. They miss out on anything that the Father would like to say to them, too. The Lord wanted to pray a lot longer but was cut short when Judas, his disciple, came with what the gospel of John reported as “a group of Roman soldiers, and some Temple guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees: they were armed and carrying lanterns and torches.” (Ch 18 v 3). Judas knew where to

find the Lord because the Lord often took his disciples to Gethsemane to pray. (John 18 v 2). A Christian who is a Greek scholar tells us that the group of soldiers in the original lingo means three hundred Roman soldiers plus the well-trained Temple Police whose job was to enforce laws from the religious courts! So when Matthew reported that a “large crowd” came for Jesus (Matt 26 v 47) it really was a huge crowd of men, and the Garden of Gethsemane must have been lit up like a big shopping centre! God is love.

NRL wrap-up with Spilla

Season kicks-off with a bang Welcome back to another exciting season of the greatest game of all. There has been many things happening in the off-season, from player movements, changes to the running of the game, drug scandals, superstars having personal issues, and we kicked our season off with a blockbuster of a game at the Indigenous vs All Stars in front of a bumper crowd in Brisbane. With round one commencing on the weekend all our issues have taken a back seat while our superstars of the game showcased their skills to excite every rugby league fan with some entertaining footy. Yes, footy is back and what a start we had in round one. The round began with the Roosters and Rabbitohs once again continuing their rivalry, with the Rabbitohs putting on an extremely powerful display, thumping the featherless chooks 28-10. Friday night footy was at it’s best with the Sea Eagles and the Broncos doing battle, but the Sea Eagles soared high to win a tough game 22-14. Super Saturday kept our fans on the edge of their seats with some highly fancied football being played between the Slippery Eels and the Warriors. The Eels showed that under the super guidance of Ricky Stuart they will be a force in 2013, with a solid 40-10 win. The mighty Cowboys outclassed an understrength Bulldogs who were missing some big names. Jonathan Thurston was at his crafty best and the Cowboys won comfortably 24-12. Sunday arvo footy produce some interesting results with Panthers belting the green machine Raiders in Western Sydney with a big 32-10 win. The Melbourne Storm, the world champions, continued on from last year with a convincing win over a hapless Dragons with Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater causing havoc and helping the Storm to a 30-10 win. The Sharks have had a very tough week but to their credit everything was brushed aside to put in a solid performance against the Titans and come away with a 12-10 win in front of a very supportive crowd in Cronulla. Monday night footy was in the mining town of Newcastle and the Knights absolutely destroyed the toothless Tigers with a big 42-10 win. Round two kicks-off this Thursday with the Eels and Bulldogs battling it out. Friday night will see the Broncos and Dragons looking for their first win, while on Saturday the mighty Cowboys will aim-up against the premiers Storm, and the Roosters and Warriors will do battle. Sunday will have three games with Raiders vs Titans, Panthers vs Tigers and Knights vs Sea Eagles. Monday night will see big guns Rabbitohs vs Sharks in a thriller. Happy tipping folks. Spillas tips: Eels, Broncos, Cowboys, Roosters, Titans, Panthers, Knights, Rabbitohs.

JT to remain a Cowboy until 2017 The deal the rugby league world has been waiting for has been completed and North Queensland Toyota Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston will remain with the club until the end of the 2017 NRL season. The four-year contract extension, which will extend JT’s career at the Cowboys to 13 NRL seasons, was announced at Cowboys HQ on Monday, March 11. A two-time Dally M Medal recipient and the 2011 Golden Boot winner as International Player of the Year, Thurston has already played 169 NRL games for the Cowboys and is set to bring up 200 overall as an NRL player in round three against Newcastle. JT’s decision to remain with North Queensland follows on from his fellow co-captain Matthew Scott’s re-signing, also until the end of the 2017 season, which was announced late last month. Test and Origin prop James Tamou and outside backs Kane Linnett and Antonio Winterstein have also extended their contracts with the Cowboys since the end of the 2012 season. Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain described Thurston’s re-signing as a highly significant moment for North Queensland. “Everyone who follows rugby league knows he is one of the best players, if not the best player, in the game,” Mr Jourdain said. “He is exceptional on the field, has been a long-time leader of our club, and is one of the faces of the Cowboys off the field. “His re-signing is fantastic news for the Cowboys and North Queensland, especially as it comes on top of extended contracts for our other current two Test players, Matthew Scott and James Tamou. “We are confident that we have

put in place a squad that can challenge for the premiership this year and for years to come. “This also means Johnathan will be able to continue the huge amount of off-field work he performs for our club through programs such as Learn Earn Legend!, as well as for many of our valued sponsors.” Thurston made his debut for the Cowboys in 2005 and steered the club to its first grand final in his first year in North Queensland, as well as finals appearances in 2007, 2011 and 2012. He also made his debut for Queensland in the ’05 season and is the only player to have taken part in every game in the Maroons’ seven consecutive State of Origin victories. His off-field work saw him receive the prestigious Ken Stephen Medal in 2012 and he was recently announced as the ambassador for the Queensland Reconciliation Awards. “I’m very excited to announce that I’m re-signing with the Cowboys until the end of the 2017 season,” Thurston said. “That’s four more years after this one that I will get to enjoy being an on-field representative of the great club we have here in North Queensland. “I’d like to thank everyone for being patient as the signing process played out. “Unfortunately these things take some time but as I said all along, it was always my first preference to remain with the Cowboys and I’m over the moon that is what’s happened. “I’m really looking forward to seeing a huge Cowboys crowd for our first home game this Saturday night and will cherish being able to lead the side out with one of my best mates, Matthew Scott, once again.”

Weipa Oztaggers take on the rest at state titles  from page 20 “This year we are hoping to not only take out both divisions but also have some women selected on the Queensland side,” she said. The Razorbacks have been training twice a week since September and the boys have put in an extra effort in the last month, slotting in another training session on Sundays. “The women’s team is also entered in the Weipa Oztag competition, playing against all other teams, and we are currently sitting in third place on the ladder having only lost one game,” Cicely said. The expense of attending state titles can be a huge burden on players so the local group has been fundraising for 12 months. “As soon as we returned from last year’s titles we started fundraising for the 2013 trip,” Cicely said. “We understand how expensive it is for players so James and I try to raise enough funds so they are only paying for their flights. “What we raise and sponsorship covers uniforms, insurance, registration, car hire, accommodation and food.” Weipa Oztag has three major sponsors, Whuntree Sound, The Western Cape Bulletin and Carpentaria Contracting. “We would also like to thank Carpentaria Golf Club for their continued support and look forward to many more ‘night clubs’ and other local events to support Weipa Oztag,” Cicely said. The Weipa Razorbacks will be playing at least five games at the Queensland titles and if they make it through to the grand finals it will be eight. And just in case you thought you might be a little too long in the tooth to join the local Oztag ranks, think again. There are already plans afoot to take three teams, open mens, ladies, and over 30s mens, to the state titles, and you can rest assured Weipa Oztag will be fundraising and scouting ‘oldies’ as soon as they return from Caloundra. Weipa open mens squad: Aaron Schleich, Branden Ramsamy, James Gannon, Karl Adams, Lumbee Pablo, James Baira, Brayden Raye, Patrick Manthey, Phil Rye, Jeffery Berry, Shaquille Nixon, Ronnie Fabila, PJ Ahmat, Lee Gannon, Steve Abraham, Jack Sagigi Weipa open ladies squad: Floria King-Smith, Cicely Baira, Sharee Yamashita, Tari Sagigi, Savannah Jia-Craige, Angie Nadredre, Kristie Moran, Tina Welch, Harmony Wone, Sandra Kirk, Jessica Jia, Harmony Wone

Floria King-Smith. There are high hopes for the girls in this year’s representative Oztag team.

Weipa Oztag player and member of the men’s representative Razorbacks team, Lumbee Pablo.

NPA could play in Cape York Cluster competition Alf Wilson story

A side from the Northern Peninsula Area may be invited to compete in the Cape York Rugby League Cluster competition in the coming 2013 season. That is one of the ideas being floated between officials of the new Rugby League Cape York who will have a video link up on March 23 to discuss the format of the new season. New Cape York senior rugby league body established

Lightning fast Weipa swimmers

Alf Wilson story

Napranum’s Angela Lui was elected as Interim President of the new Rugby League Cape York at a meeting held at the Albatross Bay Resort, Weipa on March 3. The body will take over the general running of senior rugby league in the region from the Central Cape Suns, which will control junior football. On affiliation, it was stated that the Central Cape Suns Rugby League Club was established to create a pathway for junior players in the Central Western Cape and that in its current format, it was not working with the senior bodies. It was therefore resolved that the Central Cape Suns maintain their identity and that the seniors form their own organising body that encompassed the entire Cape. Further volunteers and potential committee members were unable to make this meeting and it was therefore unacceptable to hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) under the current conditions. It was therefore resolved to provide two weeks notification, through an advertisement, calling for nominations for positions on the new board which would be in charge of senior league in the Cape. Procedures and an agenda is to be established by Karl Adams and Richelle Ryan. A motion was carried that an interim committee be appointed until the AGM and that the new body be incorporated as per QRL rules and known as Rugby League Cape York. Nominations from the floor were called for the following positions on the interim committee and Angela Lui was elected president, Loretta Glanville secretary, and Ernest Madua treasurer. Mr Maiden will provide the Interim Committee with QRL Constitution and relevant incorporation forms. As roads are cut due to the wet season, it was resolved that the AGM be conducted via Fuzebox (or similar video link) so that attendees can participate in Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Coen, Lockhart River, Aurukun and Cairns along with the Weipa participants. Mr Maiden is to set-up Fuzebox (or similar) meeting through QRL Northern scheduled for 6pm Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Weipa Town Authority Board Room. Before the above meeting, A Central Cape Suns junior rugby league meeting was held attended by Garreth Smith, Floria King-Smith, Sarina Adams, Karl Adams, David Maiden, Justin Barba, Talei Barba, Angela Lui, Richelle Ryan, Sireli Volavola and Claire Thompson. The body will still run junior rugby league in the Weipa district.

FRONT 9 – Tee OFF BY 0730 LAST SUNDAY

Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com Another week has come and gone and still not much in the way of feedback for my column, and I know that people are going fishing by the number of trailers at the boat ramp. If you have any reports, please contact me either by email, or if you see me around just come up to me and tell me what’s being caught. The rivers seem to be the pick of spots this week and some very good fish are being landed by shore-based and boat anglers. Down around Napranum Beach there have been some very good Grunter falling to local Prawns that can be caught in that area as well. Across the bay at Hornibrook I know that some nice-sized Queenfish and Trevally are taking baits. Live bait has been hard to find with the big tides we’re encountering at the moment, and it seems that the Mullet are hiding in the mangroves out of reach of the castnets. Evans Landing has had Grunter up to a couple of kilos and either peeled Prawns or local ones being the best bait. There are some large Queenies patrolling here as well, but they are feeding on micro-baitfish so small lures can fool some of these speedsters. Gongbung Beach has some Trevally and Grunter on

the chew, also taking Prawns. The Embley River has a few small Barra and Fingermark taking live Prawns just before dark and you can get these little critters at the mouth of drains and creeks. The Mission River has been going okay with most land-based spots such as Rocky Point ramp giving up some small Barra and the odd keeper. The Misssion River bridge has Queenies, Barra, Grunter and small Jewfish taking baits and lures. Crabs seem to be scarce with the odd keeper being trapped. Offshore I haven’t had many reports, however I went out on Sunday and fished the close reefs to the south in 10 metres of water and put a reasonable bag of fish together comprising of Fingermark, small Tuskers, Stripies and Salmon. The water quality is down a bit but it’s not too bad, however strangely I caught a heap of Catfish and Sharks out there as well. One boat that went up to Duyfken Point did alright on Tuskers and Fingermark however Sharks were a problem and they needed to move around a bit to get away from them. So ‘til next week smooth seas, light breezes and tight lines.

THEY’RE lean, they’re keen, and they are Weipa’s tagging machine. The Weipa Oztag representative team, the Weipa Razorbacks are heading to Caloundra next week to take on the rest, in an attempt to secure the Queensland Oztag senior state title. It’s going to be a tough call

for the Razorbacks, competing against teams from Cairns, Townsville, Fraser Coast, Capricorn Coast, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane Bayside, Brisbane Plains, Brisbane West, Noosa, Brisbane City and invitational NSW teams. The local taggers however are no strangers to competition at this level, having competed in the 2011 and 2012 Oztag titles with impressive results.

In 2011 an 11-player open men’s team made the quarter finals, only to go down to the eventual winner, and two members of the Weipa squad, James Baira and Joe Bond were selected to play on the Queensland side. Weipa was represented at the Oztag state titles in 2012 by both an open men’s and open mixed team. The mixed team earned a berth in the

quarter finals and the men’s side progressed as far as the semi-finals. Again, two local men were selected to represent Queensland, James Baira and Ryan McIntyre. There are high hopes for the 2013 Weipa Razorbacks according to local Oz Tag co-ordinator Cicely Baira.  continued page 17
