Landmark reef research project sets sail

The RTM Wakmatha has completed its maiden voyage to collect Great Barrier Reef data. Photo supplied.

A specially built science laboratory installed on a Rio Tinto bauxite ship has completed its maiden voyage to collect research data along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This is the first research of its kind to monitor ocean acidification along the length of the Great Barrier Reef. In 2012, Rio Tinto Alcan, CSIRO and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation announced a landmark three-year, $1 million research project called Future Reef MAP. The project involves the deployment of an ocean sensor system on a Rio Tinto vessel that travels between Weipa and Gladstone. The vessel, the RTM Wakmatha, will continuously collect samples and record data that will help in understanding the impacts of climate change on the Reef. CSIRO ocean carbon research team leader Dr Bronte Tilbrook said the major difference between this reef research project and any other was that the data would be collected over a three-year period, along the same, 2000km route.  continued page 2

“The infrastructure has been installed, the sensors have been tested, and we are starting to receive data in our labs in Tasmania,” Dr Tilbrook said. “For the first time we are able to collect data to map ocean acidification over the entire Great Barrier Reef and determine if there are parts of the reef that are likely to be more exposed to acidification changes. “Data collected during the vessel’s travels will also help us determine how processes like the major flood and storm events recently experienced in Queensland influence longer term changes in ocean acidification.” Rio Tinto Alcan president and chief executive officer, Bauxite and Alumina, Pat Fiore said Rio Tinto’s shipping operations provide the perfect opportunity to collect the vital data. “The data collected will help reef managers understand

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. In the wake of recent uninformed speculation in the press and on the television, the Minister has asked me to write to you and explain the process of Structural Domainal Reassignment of Prevalent Statutory Assets. In fact, this is a normal government procedure used to rebalance the values of those assets (above) in the light of an ongoing need for a regular input of short term funding, and the requirement to establish a secure political foundation prior to the next electoral process.

industry and science working together.” Great Barrier Reef Foundation managing director Claire Hanratty said the innovation used in the Future Reef MAP project, both in terms of the use of a commercial vessel and the extensive data it gathers, has caught the imagination of many.

The Minister would like to stress that these procedures have absolutely nothing in common with the so called privatisation plans of the previous Labor government. They were nothing more than daylight robbery of everything Queenslanders hold dear. Selling the family farm to fund the normal Socialist addiction to crazy left-wing policies. Current plans are nothing like that. Under the leadership of Premier Newman, there will be a reassignment of responsibilities vis à vis management structures of some Government operated enterprises, but Queensland citizens will probably not notice any difference on a day to day basis. There are some parts of the Governments estate portfolio that are badly in need of new and modern management ideas. As an example, our schools continue to generate very little revenue. In fact, most of them run at a substantial loss. New ideas can make a difference, such as selling off playing fields as housing estates, or using

“Rio Tinto Alcan’s investment in the Future Reef MAP project is one we draw on regularly—the concept of using an existing vessel to collect data across a scale and range of habitats that would otherwise be impossible to reach is one that many relate to and consider a smart investment,” Ms Hanratty said.

spare student time to stack shelves in the local supermarket. Another exciting project will be the reassignment of the Lotus Glen correctional facility near Mareeba as a tourist resort. The existing grim buildings will make wonderful holiday accommodation. The surrounding countryside is simply splendid, and the chance for tourists to mix with the inmates will provide an experience they will never forget. We realise that some people are worried that restructuring companies like Ergon will result in higher prices for consumers. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. The Minister held a meeting last Thursday, at Casino Brisbane, with the consortium who will win the upcoming tender process for Ergon and Energex. They assured the Minister that they definitely will not increase prices more than absolutely necessary, and Queensland’s power companies will be safe in their hands. FRIDAY Mapoon Junior Rangers Nasonah Ase, Kaysee De Jersey, Alyza Yeatman, Lilah Jia, Blanche Mamoose, Shontae Wheeler, Tariq Ase and Thomas Pitt at Australia Zoo.

EIGHT Mapoon Junior Rangers undertook a journey of epic proportions this month when they visited Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast. Western Cape Communities Co-existence Agreement (WCCCA) Northern Trust, together with the Queensland Indigenous Land & Sea Ranger Program supported the Junior Rangers’ visit, and many of the long-term participants in the program were rewarded for their consistent attendance and enthusiasm by being a part of the group. Four students from Western Cape College, along with four Year 6 students from the Mapoon Campus were given special treatment by the Australia Zoo staff and gained access to close-up encounters with many of the zoo creatures including koalas, alligators, dingoes, birds of prey and of course, elephants. Following the Australia Zoo visit, the Junior Rangers visited Underwater World and the Queensland Museum. At the Queensland Museum, Geoff Wharton showed Thursday Island

Mapoon Primary School captains Nasonah Ase and Alyza Yeatman are proud to be power savvy.

Western Cape College Mapoon Campus is officially a Power Savvy school, and they have been rewarded for their efforts. The school has been participating in the Ergon Energy powersavvy program, doing their bit to help save the environment and the school money. Mapoon Campus students are already environmentally “savvy” as the school has a great relationship with local Land and Sea Rangers and regularly participate in activities which make them aware of the importance of caring for country. The students are very mindful of being power savvy at school and each classroom has a power savvy monitor who has the job of turning off lights and air conditioners. Students and staff were very excited when they were informed they had won an iPad for their power savvy efforts which helped to save 63 per cent over the Christmas holidays. Power consumption over this period was reduced by making sure all unused fridges, appliances and computers where turned off at the power. The school is now looking at how they can further reduce their consumption this Easter and is also investigating alternative security lighting options. Head of Campus, Baressa Frazer said “The school would like to thank powersavvy staff for teaching us skills to save power at school and at home. “We are glad we are making a difference in our diesel-power generated community.” Powersavvy has been working in schools in remote Queensland communities since March 2010. They are committed to changing the way people use power and to creating energy-efficient environments for further information log onto http://www.powersavvy.com.au/at-school/ powersavvy-in-schools

Young artists complete Napranum mural SIX young trainee artists have put the finishing touches on a ceramic mural which will take pride of place in the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC) boardroom. Lydia Sigai, Danielle Hudson, Alston Sigai, Joyce Waia, Kalingo Kris and Anita Woodley have worked with the project’s arts director, Jenuarrie from Cairns to complete the mural. The NASC mayor, Philemon Mene asked the young people “to express what they felt about Napranum” and the finished product certainly depicts their love and vision for their community. The project was initially conceived by the co-ordinator of the Regional Partnership Agreement as providing Indigenous cultural expression as public art, initially for the Lake Patricia area, but has morphed into providing

Weipa Motel & Resort event to benefit WCCA THINK leotards, tights, legwarmers and headbands – the theme for this month’s Weipa Motel & Resort’s fundraiser is the 1980s. Following on the success of last month’s fundraiser Weipa Community Care Association Inc (WCCA) is to benefit from this Friday night’s fun-filled fundraiser. Doors open at 7pm and a $15 ticket will ensure you’ll be dancing your socks off while enjoying fingerfood throughout the night. Profits from raffles held at the event will go directly to WCCA and the two major raffle prizes are a $600 service donated by Rebel Auto and a Sony home audio docking centre. Tickets are available from Weipa Motel & Resort (4090 6900), WCCA (4069 9272) or at the door on the night. So come and groove to the beats of the ‘80s while helping to raise money for a hard-working Weipa community group.

Fuzz-free fundraising IT was definitely a case of “less is more” last weekend when 17 Weipa residents went under the razor in the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave event. Weipa Woolworths store manager Jenny Everist was the first of her team of six to brave the shave and said the support from the local community for the event was overwhelming. Originally setting their target at $1000 the Woolies team raised $3836.85 in total. Weipa Community Care Association Inc. and Weipa CapeAbility also joined in the fundraising fun, manning a sausage sizzle and packing groceries in the store on Saturday. The Weipa Bowls Club was packed to the rafters on Saturday evening for the Weipa Warriors’ (aka Evie Addison, Shane Day and Stretch Noonan) shave-off. DJ Billy K and Bowlies’ Fran Dorante also put their heads on the block and lost their locks. The Weipa Warriors raised $3570 on the night for a total of

$4452 including on-line donations. This will be added to the Goodline Team’s fundraising pool which at time of press stood at $70,008. Part of the Goodline Team, John Kennedy will be shaving his long-time and much-loved beard off on March 26. Students took great delight taking to the hair of the Western Cape College Worlds Greatest Shave team during the WCC Easter Markets, held last Sunday. The six-man team raised a total of $6,600. Photos from last weekend’s events can be found on page 11.

The 2013 school captains, sports captains and school council representatives were presented with their badges at an induction ceremony in front of a community crowd of around 40 people. It was with heartfelt pride the crowd witnessed the 2013 student leaders receiving their leadership badges, and there were onlookers who found it hard to fight back tears, including the Head of Campus hosting the ceremony. The elected Mapoon Campus’ 2013 school captains are: Nasonah Ase and Alyza Yeatman; elected sports captains: Connie Mara and Blanche Mamoose; student council: Makeeyha Wheeler Year 2, Eshtamoa Ase year 4 and Izaiah Hellmuth year 5. The school leadership team was elected by their peers. Students were joined by Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council deputy mayor Polly Smith and councillor Beryl Woodley who provided encouraging words to the future leaders of Mapoon community. After the badge ceremony parents and community toured the three classrooms where teachers and students showcased their work and gave an insight into the everyday classroom experiences. The students were able to talk about their learning goals and work. Head of Campus Baressa Frazer says she is always overwhelmed by how much the school is supported by the parents and community “It shows great community spirit,” Baressa said. “This support is truly reflected in the student’s pride and attitudes at school. “I would like to thank our parents and community for their continued support and a special mention should go to the beautiful manners the students displayed during the ceremony and the open day.”

Retire from work, not your life! THE retirement years can throw up many life challenges. For some people, being retired can be the happiest time of their life with many responsibilities coming to an end and being able to do their own thing. For others, however, retirement can be a time of great financial and emotional burden. It is as if all meaningful life has ended, and boredom has become entrenched. What do happy people do in retirement that unhappy people do not? Purposeful activities • Involve yourself in more than five hours of purposeful activities per week. • Activities should involve: - the production of something - the provision of services - self development. • Plan and commence some activities before retirement, such as Voluntary work, part-time work, hobbies, crafts, education etc.

Emotional support • Ensure you have someone to turn to in times of crisis: - This is important to your wellbeing; and - Can help reduce levels of anxiety. • Be aware of other resources that are available, such as: - health-related issues, carer situations etc Active curiosity • Talk to other retirees whose personality, outlook and interests are similar to yours. • Conduct your own research on retirement issues from books, magazines and internet.

Relationships • Work on your communication with your partner. • Learn to be assertive. • Understand what your partner may be experiencing. • ‘Cross skill’ for the future, in the event you are left on your own.

HISTORY / OPINION

Back in the Day

Marine Logistics

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

Following the early explorations and observations of the area we now know as Cape York Peninsula, by Dutch navigators, other mariners and explorers were to make their own contributions in terms of its naming, charting and understanding. Some would be more famous than others and some, as they journeyed for specific purposes such as moving cattle or joining the rush for gold, would be anonymous in the Cape’s history. Cape York Peninsula was named by Lieutenant James Cook in August 1770 in honour of Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany, a brother of King George III, who had died three years earlier. Cook referred to this historic event in his journal, saying, “the point of the main, which forms one side of the passage…and which is the northern promontory of this country, I have named York Cape, in honour of his late Royal Highness, the Duke of York”. Matthew Flinders was to follow, in 1802, undertaking a detailed maritime exploration of the west coast, during which he noted the Laterite deposits which were later to become such a valuable resource. Ludwig Leichhardt, in 1844, took his place in this progression of explorers when he crossed Cape York Peninsula as far north as the Mitchell River. Edmund Kennedy undertook his important but tragic overland journey north from Cardwell to Port Albany near the tip of Cape York Peninsula, in 1848. Later, in 1865, the Jardine brothers overlanded cattle to Cape York to supply a proposed coaling station near

THERE would have been thousands of small groups camped around Jerusalem waiting for the Passover festival, and if Judas had not been with Jesus many times before praying in that area he would not have known where to lead the soldiers. The Devil wanted to make sure that the Lord didn’t escape this time as he tried many times before to capture Jesus, even from baby time, but the Lord got away from all the traps set for him. Somerset, to supply vessels travelling through the adjacent shipping lanes. William Hann, a Charters Towers pastoralist was commissioned by the colonial government, in 1872, to conduct an exploratory journey into Cape York Peninsula, to investigate the area’s mining and pastoral potential. Later, Robert Logan Jack, the Queensland government geologist, explored North Queensland in two expeditions, in 1879-80, extending from Cooktown to the Archer River as well as areas to the west.As well, many individual overlanders, prospectors, gold seekers and general searchers of opportunity were to continue this exploration, adding to the available knowledge of this isolated but valuable area of Queensland. The image above shows Robert Logan Jack taken in 1913, some thirty years after his important, but perhaps lesser known, journey of exploration to Cape York Peninsula.

10 v 39). When Judas kissed Jesus to show the soldiers and temple guards who Jesus was, it was a deep insult because it was the kiss of a friend. Peter, of the quick w o r d s a n d t e m p e r, whipped out his sword and cut off the ear of one of the High Priest’s slave. (John 18 v 10). John also reports that when Jesus told them that “I am he” the power of his saying “I am” caused the soldiers and Judas to move back and fall to the ground. (John 18 v 4-7). I wonder if some of

the soldiers watching on were beginning to see Jesus in a different light from that experience and when he reattached the ear of the man on the spot! (Luke Ch 22 v 51). So Jesus is taken to the kangaroo court held by High Priest, the chief priests and other big honchos were gathering to have a mock trial. They produced liars to trap Jesus and Peter was out in the courtyard denying that he ever knew Jesus, just as the Lord predicted. (Mark Ch 14 vs 43- 72). Jesus loves us. Rev Michael Connolly

AFL wrap-up with Dallas Season 2013 is almost upon us and the AFL supporters amongst us are eagerly awaiting the first bounce. Swans fans are still celebrating their great win last year while Hawks fans are keen for retribution and dominance this year. However both team’s form in the NAB Cup wasn’t great and they will have to lift for the season proper. With the NAB Cup done and dusted, the two form sides heading into the regular season are the Lions and Blues. Brisbane have added their first silverware to the cabinet in a decade with a strong win over Carlton in the NAB Cup final. It looks like Brisbane actually developing some of its own talent and not recruiting “has-been” players from other clubs has paid off. This is the strongest they have looked since before the Brendan Fevola saga and Coach Voss’s subsequent and similarly unsuccessful recruiting crusade. They may even make it into the finals if they can continue early form. Meanwhile, Carlton are looking stronger under new super coach Mick Malthouse. Many predict they will be top four this season but I’m not so sure after seeing them against the Lions. Other recent power sides under scrutiny this year will be Geelong and Collingwood. Time is catching up with the exciting Cats outfit of the last decade but this may be the start of their slide down the eight. Collingwood may also be slowing this year to the joy of many but with a good run could still make the top four. Teams continuing their rise in the top eight could be West Coast, Adelaide and possibly Freo. The Bombers looked to be taking off until they discovered that their sports scientists and trainers were also aspiring Vets. The Hawks were also high fliers last year. They had all the right ingredients but put a damper on 2012 when Buddy and co. failed to rise in the heat of battle come Grand-Final Day. They should be well in the mix again this year. North are again contenders for a lower spot in the final eight but may have played above themselves last year. The Saints days of glory ended with their drawn Grand- Final a few years back and they will also will struggle to make the finals. Richmond may again display a typical rollercoaster season ending in mediocrity. The Tigers will likely take their traditional spot of ninth and miss finals again much to the disappointment of their loyal but disillusioned fans. Failure to play into September could again quite possibly come as a result of completing a losing hat-trick of games in this their third of a disastrous three year deal to play the Suns in Cairns. Apart from their annual tropical trouncing of the Tigers, the Suns showed some real home form late in the year against Fremantle and in knocking the Blues out of the finals contention. While the Suns have struggled as a new club with a young side, these talented draftees of three years ago are becoming men and hopefully will begin their march up the table this year. Bring on the Cairns game again in July! The cellar dwellers are likely to be GWS, Melbourne and the Bulldogs. Their supporters should

just be happy that there aren’t any immediate plans to relocate one of them to Tasmania. It certainly looks to be another great year with many teams in contention for both finals and the flag and no clear favourite at this stage. The first round of the season is over two weeks and starts with Essendon vs Adelaide and a WA Derby this weekend. The blockbuster games are scheduled for Easter with the Blues taking on the Tigers while the great rivalry continues between the Hawks and Cats. Many thanks to Scotty for his efforts in writing this column previously. I’m not sure if it is coincidence that he has stopped writing this column at the same time his long conquering Cats are likely to begin to slide…? Hope you enjoy the column this year. If you are one of the Weipa AFL minority, feel free to bail me up for a footy chat at the shops – just look for the Suns jumper! All the best for you and your team this season. That’s the pre-season wrap…!

Rugby League the greatest game of all ROUND two and we can see why rugby league is the greatest game of all, with so many big hits, action-packed games and excitement machines showcasing their talent and skills better than ever. How good is it to watch a live game on a Thursday night? I think it is awesome. In some exciting news for rugby league fans I’m getting a big scoop a Bulldogs superstar will be back for the Bulldogs in the next two weeks - he could be a real surprise starter against the Storm as early as Thursday night. Last Thursday night’s game was a cracker with the Bulldogs just winning over a much-improved Eels team. Friday night footy saw the Broncos bounce back and hand the Dragons a footballing lesson. Saturday we had two very entertaining games with the Storm showing why they are so good by simply outclassing the Cowboys, and the Roosters just edging out the Warriors in New Zealand. Sunday afternoon footy was at it’s best with the Titans thrashing the Raiders, the Tigers were too good for the Panthers and the Sea Eagles were too big and strong for the miserable Knights. Monday saw the Rabbitohs just winning in a close game over a very gallant Sharks team. Round three will be even better and it all starts on Thursday night with a grand final replay when the Storm and Bulldogs go into battle. Friday will have the battle of Western Sydney with the Eels and Tigers going to war. Super Saturday will feature the Titans vs Sea Eagles and the Broncos and Roosters will go head to head. Sunday afternoon footy is back with the Sharks and Warriors doing battle, Panthers taking on the Rabbitohs and the Raiders vs Dragons with both teams looking for their first win. Monday night will see the Cowboys up against the Knights. All the best footy tipsters I really hope you enjoy all the footy action and happy tipping. Spillas tips: Storm, Eels, Sea Eagles, Broncos, Sharks, Rabbitohs, Dragons, Cowboys.

Junior golfers head back to the greens

Over 60 personal best times recorded AT the Weipa Swimming Club on Friday night, March 15 more than 60 Personal Bests (PBs) were swum. Amongst all of the flying ants that shared the pool with us the stars of the week, who took over five seconds or more off their previous PBs, were Alex McInnes with 22.59 seconds off his 200m backstroke, Katelyn McCahon 12.65 seconds off her 200m backstroke, Brock Taylor 9.22 seconds off his 100m individual medley, Lincoln Hirst 9.48 seconds off his 100m individual medley, Ashlee Moon 7.12 seconds off her 100m freestyle and Thomas Nona with 5.78 seconds off his 25m breaststroke. A big thank you goes to the Slack and McCulkin families for cooking and serving this week’s barbecue, and to Paula May who does all the running around before club night begins each week to collect all the food for the night. This weekend our club members, Kirra, Sabrina and Alissa Koina were representing Weipa Swimming Club in Cairns at the Far North Queensland Swimming Championships. We know they all would have swum their best and in doing so made themselves and their fellow club members proud. We look forward to hearing about and sharing their successes.

Junior golfers enjoy the perfect weather at their first Carpentaria Golf Club for the 2013 season.

Twenty eager juniors participated in last Sunday’s junior golf program kick-off.

junior golf program remains. As the season gets underway, juniors are reminded of some key rules that need to be followed in and around the club: • No hats are permitted inside the club house. They should be removed before entering. • No bare feet inside the club house • No running around or playing inside the club house • All rubbish is to be placed in the bins provided • Hands should be washed after playing golf to remove any traces of course chemicals • Showing respect for other people in the club house. This includes not talking loudly, calling out, whistling etc. Any questions regarding the junior golf program can be directed to Brett Elms on 0412 752 534, or email mbelms@bigpond.com.

SOCCER returned to Weipa last Saturday with trial games played and enjoyed by all. Teams will be shuffled around this week with a view to having evenly matched teams. All players need to arrive 20 minutes early before the start of their game and gather outside the P & C Shed. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Soft brim hats only please – no caps or peaks. The Mission River bridge has been going off with Barra being the mainstay of the catches, but mainly after the sun has gone down. There are some Grunter also taking baits and soft plastics but there is a lot of water between them. In the Embley Brett Jenkins and his wife Georgina landed a few small Barra on live bait. Gongbung beach has Grunter after dark on prawns as well as some small Queenies. The main channel has some medium sized Queenies chasing the baitfish and mixed in with these are some Golden Trevally. Hopefully this good weather stays with us for next weekend, so ‘til next week smooth seas and tight lines.

Finally, the weather Gods smiled upon us and we had a near perfect weather for two days over the weekend, and the fishing was just as hot. Out in the deep blue sea some great fish were caught from Duyfken Point to down past Pera Point. On Friday Alan (Fish) Philliskirk found some good fish with Adam McLaughlan getting a great GT caught on a soft plastic, and then backed it up on Sunday by getting his daughter Kristy her first Sailfish for the season. I fished with Rachael Campbell on Saturday, just moving around looking for structures on the sounder then anchoring up to see what was down there. We put together quite a good bag, mainly Fingermark but we got some nice Tuskies also. Jim Borthwick took some clients way down south and hit the jackpot on the reefs there, getting a good haul of Nannygai and Cod. Sharks are still a pain in the backside, and there are some monsters amongst them, and Catfish are out on the reefs as well. I took Heather McIvor out on Sunday and we hit the kindergartens with heaps of small Tuskies, Stripies, Cod and baitfish taking baits meant for larger prey. While we were anchored we watched as Mackerel were smashing the bait fish so we went for a troll but didn’t turn a reel. We did however observe a large Cobia escorting a large turtle. Steve Larkin was out fishing with B J Edwards up around Duyfken way. On the first drop BJ got a PB Tuskie and Nannygai. While they were anchored schools of Mackerel were swimming down a current line, so Steve threw out a bumper bar lure and nailed a 133cm Spaniard on his third cast.  continued page 19
