Swimming challenge to aid Weipa Wildlife Care ON Saturday, May 4 members of the Weipa Lightning Swimming Club will attempt to swim 20 kilometres to help raise much-needed funds for Weipa Wildlife Care. The event, organised by 12year old Katelyn McCahon will start at 6.30am and Katey hopes it will take around four hours to complete in a relay fashion. “The kids participating in the challenge are aged between nine and 13 years and are very excited about the swim as we all agree it’s for a great cause,” Katey said. “The operating costs of Weipa Wildlife Care are very high and the number of animals and birds requiring care is growing all of the time. “The wildlife carers are all volunteers and have to use their own money a lot of the time just to feed and care for the sick and injured wildlife, relying on donations and community support for all funds.” Weipa Lightning Swimming Club members Morgan McCulkin, Alyssa Taare, Katelyn McCahon and Tom McCahon with Weipa Wildlife Care’s joey, Ruby.

Sooty Terns, rescued after wild weather earlier this year, were cared for by Weipa Wildlife Care volunteers.
Caring for local wildlife WEIPA Wildlife Care is a volunteer wildlife rescue group caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Last year alone the group attended to approximately 260 animals, not counting the more than 500 Sooty Terns which went into care in January this year following wild weather created by Tropical Cyclone Oswald. about that. Would I have noticed if anyone had published a spoof story about Australian politics or sport? Both of them are so outlandish in the first place that they are hard to parody and be believed. I’ll have to go back and check. The biggest April 1 joke story is disqualified from running. Firstly because it did not appear until April 23, and secondly because it was true. It runs like this . . . It was one in the morning when an anonymous Sydney lady (she refuses to divulge her name but does tell reporters that she is 68 years old) - as I was saying, when

an anonymous Sydney lady heard a noise in her kitchen. She got out of bed and went to investigate. She found a man, who had already collected her television, crouched in front of her fridge looking for some alcohol to take along with it. Now, you or I would probably flee the scene screaming, but our anonymous heroine is made of tougher stuff. She grabbed a chair, set it over the intruder and stood on it. He was trapped, unable to move, and the lady’s husband called the police to arrest him. I am positive the lady was fêted in her local bowls club,

You know, the guy who got trapped by a 68 yearold girl with a chair.” That will not look good on his CV. There is a lesson to be learned here. We have more than enough stupid burglaries. We also have plenty of spunky old ladies. What we should do immediately is apply for a Government grant to buy them all the right sort of chair. That’s a move that should work wonders.

Local soldier honours fallen comrades at Weipa dawn service By Giembra Busmer
THE 2013 ANZAC Day commemorations in Weipa were particularly poignant for one local family as their son returned to the town following active service in Afghanistan. A Private, based in the Northern Territory, Bronson Scott spent three weeks back home visiting mates and his proud parents Grace and Rocky Scott, as well as attending the Weipa ANZAC Day dawn service with them for the first time since 2008 when he enlisted in the Army. Close friend Matt Whittaker told the Western Cape Bulletin that as a teenager Bronson ‘lived and breathed the Army’. “It was not unusual to see him headed off into the scrub with his backpack full of weights, or running around his yard with a tyre being dragged behind him strapped to his back, trying to achieve an elite level of fitness,” Matt said. PTE Scott was raised in Weipa from when he was born in 1990 to his completion of school and eventual enlistment into the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in 2008. He got his first real taste of Army-life at B Company, 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment at Evans Landing where he participated in work experience in grades 9 and 10. “It was my first exposure to what being in the forces would be like and I really enjoyed it,” PTE Scott told the Western Cape Bulletin. “I was hooked.” A rifleman in the ADF PTE Scott said the lure of overseas travel was his main reason for signing-up and his career in the forces has so far lived up to his expectations. “During 2010 and 11 I travelled to eight different countries
so I am really getting to see the world, and I’m making a lot of new mates while doing it,” PTE Scott said. Recently returned from a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan PTE Scott described his tour to the Western Cape Bulletin. “It was freezing – that was a big shock after growing up in Weipa, and I got to see snow for the first time. “Before we arrived we were instructed to be aware of IED (improvised explosive devices) markers as it was the weapon of choice of the Taliban on coalition forces overseas. “In reality, when we arrived in Afghanistan, the markers were everywhere. Farmers used markers (e.g. a pile of rocks) to mark graves or the boundaries of a makeshift fence. “After a few patrols we were used to it. We were able to distinguish the difference between what was ‘normal’ and what wasn’t,” PTE Scott said. “I must make special mention of the brave sappers of our Combat Engineer Regiments and Explosive Ordanance Disposal teams around Australia who risked life and limb clearing our patrol paths of IEDs. “They had nerves of steel when faced with the task of finding ‘possible’ IEDs. They did this knowing that if they stuffed up just once it could be their last mistake ever.” PTE Scott said that unlike Australian children the Afghani youngsters were ‘not into sharing’. “If you gave a child a packet of chips they wouldn’t share it with their mates, they would fight over it, take off and hide somewhere to eat them alone. “Some of the boys told me, for a bit of fun, they would give a bottle of Tabasco sauce to a

group of cheeky kids, watch them fight over it then watch the winner drink his hard-fought prize, only to end up spitting it out making funny noises and putting on quite a display of theatrics that made both the locals and us Aussies have a good laugh together.” And speaking of sharing, PTE Scott said the Aussie Diggers quite often swapped their ration packs with the American soldiers – who always threw away the Vegemite but enjoyed the packets of M&Ms! During his deployment PTE Scott experienced the loss of three Australian comrades, but said it only made his resolve stronger. “We lost three Aussies from our Battle Group during my tour of Afghanistan – Corporal Richard Atkinson (22), Sapper Jamie Larcombe (21) and Lance Corporal Andrew Jones (25). I had just returned from leave when Sapper Larcombe was shot, but it just made us all

the more determined to get the job done so our mates deaths were not for nothing. “It was particularly moving to see the crosses representing those lost in Afghanistan at the Weipa dawn service. In the end it’s about honouring the Australians who never came back and paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep their mates and loved ones safe and preserving our freedom.” PTE Scott plans to stay a Digger as long as he can but is hoping to enrol in the next promotion course. “The Army is a great career, and a wonderful way to travel and see the world, but it’s definitely a single man’s job!” he said. PTE Scott is not the only proud Weipa representative in the Australian Defence Forces – PTE Jack Carter, PTE Scott Gobbert and Kirstie Bucholz (Royal Australian Air Force) are all current serving members of the ADF.

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa community relations specialist, Scott Goodson, presents a $1,000 cheque donation to Goodline’s John Kennedy for their ‘Shave for a Cure’ fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation.
SEVERAL Cape York community groups, services and events received a boost recently after being awarded funds through Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Community Donation and Partnership Programme. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa acting Community Relations manager, Scott McIntyre, said successful recipients of the year’s first round included: Weipa Kindergarten and Preschool, Aurukun Tweenies Group, the Regional Partnership Agreement, Western Cape NAIDOC, Goodline’s Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser, the Queensland State Dirt Kart Titles and the Weipa Fishing Classic. “There are so many wonderful community groups, services and events in our community who we want to recognise and help financially, so that more people can benefit from these activities,” Mr McIntyre said. “Whether it’s an initiative to help local Indigenous people become work-ready, organisers of large events that the whole community can enjoy, or those helping protect our local environment—it all benefits the community,” he said. “Preference is given to those who can demonstrate a sustainable contribution to Western Cape York, and those who show a strong commitment to health, safety and the environment. “Applicants that show good organisation and can demonstrate that effort has been made to collect support from a range of sources, are also given preference.” Applications for the second round should be received by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa no later than May 31, 2013, for review in June. Other funding rounds will be held in September and December. All local community groups, events and services are encouraged to apply. Brochures about the programme and application forms can be obtained from the Community Relations Building (located behind Weipa Bowls Club), via email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com, or the freecall hotline (1800 707 633).

dertake work experience with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, in the form of the vacation programme, graduate programme and cadetships—just to name a few,” Ms McLachlan said. “Past recipients of the bursary have used the funds for boarding school fees, courses and HECS fees, textbooks, laptops and rental assistance.” The bursary scheme is an integral part of the company’s commitment to the EBMPA, providing local Aboriginal people with assistance during their education, with the potential to secure employment with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. Innovative training program launched by RPA THE Western Cape Regional Partnership’s (RPA) longplanned Indigenous Work Skills Program was launched by the RPA chairperson, Gareth Manderson on Monday, April 22. The launch was held at the Western Cape Centre and Jackie Madua, Traditional Owner for the Alngith people of the Western Cape welcomed everyone to her country and wished them every success in the program. The program is providing sound and innovative training and leads into real employment opportunities within the region’s businesses. It looks to link local businesses, local Indigenous people and local contract opportunities to build the region’s economy together. RPA co-ordinator Liz Logan said “Employment without having to leave the region will build work skills and job capacity, which will mean that there is greater chance of getting further employment in Cape York’s major projects in coming years.” The launch also introduced the three new mentors for the program for the next 12 months - Tom Corrie, lead mentor, Jillian Boyd and Edem Lemaire, all of whom come with great mentoring and leadership backgrounds as well as expertise in

different sectors such as sport and recreation, construction and civil works, and child care and teaching. Tom and Jillian have been on-board since the assessment day on April 18 when some 60 hopeful candidates turned up at the Convention Centre to register. Forty people were given places in the Program. There was 36 acceptances and there has been high attendance rates of around 30-32 people most days. Skill360 is providing the pre-vocational training by
extremely experienced staff. Facilitator and trainer, Rebecca Burke and trainers, Narelle Bennetts and Dave Binjuda are putting the trainees through some pretty tough (but sometimes fun) paces with both accredited and life-work balance modules. Liz Logan, said there has been fantastic support from local businesses and the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce and there are a number of employment projects coming to light now. “The RPA had received
strong support from Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and local Job Service providers, CEA and Centrelink. “I would also like to thank ITEC and CEA staff for transport in the first few days of assessment and training. “I hope this level of success and co-operation continues and that local employers will get to have not only enthusiastic and well-trained employees but also people who are already part of the local economy – therefore everyone prospers equally,” she said.

Community launch for healthy eating project in Aurukun Island & Cape’s aurukun store is inviting the local community to attend the exciting launch of its new healthy eating project next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 7 and 8. The Healthy Choices launch and Health Expo, which takes place at the store between 8.30am and 5pm on both days, will include a free healthy barbecue, competitions and prizes, face painting, store walk ‘n’ talks, apple slinkies, balloons, fruit, and lots of fun activities and games. Island & Cape retail operations manager Craig Oxlade said the Healthy Badging project, being run in conjunction with Apunipima Cape York Health Council, will greatly benefit the local community. “This project is all about helping the Aurukun community to recognise products which are the healthier choice by their badging,” Mr Oxlade said. “We want to promote good health, nutrition and physical activity, and Apunipima has provided wonderful support to get this project off the ground.
“We’ve also been training our staff on how to read labels, so they can also help customers make the right choice when they buy food and drink from our store. “The launch will be a great way to celebrate this healthy initiative, and we look forward to seeing as many local community members attend as possible. “I encourage everyone to come down for lots of fun, food, games and music, and enjoy the free barbecue on offer.” The launch follows similar healthy eating initiatives at other Island & Cape stores across Far North Queensland, including in Hopevale. Mr Oxlade said Island & Cape were also working with Menzies School of Health Research in the Northern Territory to analyse raw sale data collected from its group of stores. “We want to identify shopping trends that impact health and nutrition in communities across Far North Queensland,” he added.

Focus on financial goals IF you have ever planned a long trip, you will appreciate the importance of a good map. Of course, the purpose of a map is to help you find your way to where you are going. Like a map, your financial plan is designed to provide the best route to your targeted financial destination (your financial goals). Your financial planner will need to know what you want to achieve financially to help you reach your goals, and will work with you to identify them. This may be anything from going on an overseas holiday, buying a home or retiring at a certain time with a certain income. While it is fine to have some general ideas about what you want to achieve, it is important to allocate a time frame and dollar amount to as many goals as you can. Your goal might be to retire comfortably. In order to plan for this, you need to decide what “comfortable” means to you. For example your fully defined financial goal might be to “retire at age 60 on an income of $52,000 a year for at least 40 years”. Once you have set specific goals, think about when they need to be achieved. Time frames need to be specific and can be broken into three categories: short term (less than 2 years), medium term (3 to 5 years) and long term (more than 5 years). The time frame for your financial objectives will determine the investments that are best for you

and how much you need to start saving now. For example, savings for short term goals will generally be put into short term investments like cash. Long term goals could be funded using assets like shares that are likely to go up and down in the short term but deliver long term growth. Of course, some goals are ongoing such as your regular income requirements and annual holidays. Financial goals need to be prioritised. Even with the best plan, you may need to compromise on some of your goals. Once you have listed your financial goals and time frames, think about which are most important to you in case you need to make changes. Decide which goals you are willing to change, either in terms of time frames or financial amounts. If you cannot retire at the age and income you desire, consider whether you would be willing to work a little longer or whether you would prefer to lower your income? Or would you rather reduce your spending now to increase your savings towards this goal? JESUS Barrabas the murderer was chosen over Jesus who called himself the Son of God. Jesus was a model citizen compared to Jesus Barrabas. These same accusers of Jesus saw him do good time and again for the people, healing the sick, raising the dead, and bringing hope to the poor and oppressed. But in their legal and hard religious hearts, they could not see God at work but rather some self-important conman and fraud that was a threat to their religious rule.
By Rev. Michael Connolly
Of course Pilate knew why. Verse 10 of Ch 15 says that the chief priests were angry with Jesus and Pilate knew that they were jealous of Jesus. The original Greek lingo there for “jealous” was the word “envious” but meant someone who was so envious that they would do all in their power, even murder, to get what the person they are envious of, have got. They were murderously envious of the Lord’s popularity and success with the people, and wanted him removed from the scene, permanently.
Pilate asked for a bowl of water and washed his hands in it, saying that he wanted nothing to do with the death of Jesus and he washed his hands of the whole affair. That saying is still used in our society today for example, when we want nothing to do with anything that goes against our conscience, our moral and ethical views. Or when we want to ease our conscience a bit because we did not take a honest stand on a matter. Jesus is truth.
Rev Michael Connolly.

Do you have the old mortgage insurance, or the new? Many australians over the years have taken out Life and Total and Permanent Disability insurance in line with the mortgage that they owe, and often refer to this as their ‘mortgage insurance’. The newer style of Insurance packages will also pay out your mortgage if you were diagnosed with a critical illness or trauma event such as cancer, heart attack or stroke.
Considering statistically one in three men and one in four women will suffer from cancer in their lifetime this is a much-improved style of policy. Trauma insurance is often referred to as a living insurance, meaning benefits are paid to the insured whilst they are still alive. The difference with this kind of cover as opposed to Income Protection and Total
and Permanent Disability is that there isn’t a work related test you have to meet. The difference with this cover compared to life insurance is that the “trauma” event doesn’t have to render you terminally ill either. In fact, in most cases people who claim under a trauma policy continue to live a long and productive life. A common misconception is that Trauma Cover is cover that is automatically provided through employer superannuation and is often confused with Total and Permanent Disability. Trauma Insurance is generally unable to be purchased through a Superannuation Fund.

Weipa ANZAC Day THE largest contingent of marchers in recent years wound their way from the Weipa skatepark to Memorial Square in the pre-dawn light of ANZAC Day last Thursday. Around 1,000 people gathered in the square to pay tribute to the servicemen and women who have served our country in a moving ceremony conducted by the Weipa RSL Sub-Branch. Following the service a record number of people headed to Evans Landing to join the troops from B Company, 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment for a delicious hot breakfast, provided by Serco. Many stayed on after breakfast to toast the ANZAC legend with a few cold beverages, and
try their luck at a game of crown and anchor or two-up. Weipa ANZAC Day tradition continued at the Weipa Bowls Club where patrons enjoyed a buffet lunch, a couple more coldies and a few more games of two-up. The day was particularly enjoyed by Private Bronson Scott who came home to Weipa to visit family and friends following active service in Afghanistan (see story page 3). PTE Scott said he wanted to thank the Weipa RSL SubBranch, Major Steven La Rose, WO2 Tony Harris, B Coy 51st Battalion FNQ Regiment, the Weipa Bowls Club and the people of Weipa for making his ANZAC Day one to remember.

In honour of the men from Aurukun who served our nation ANZAC Day 2013, the 98th year since the landing at Gallipoli, was a very important year for the Aurukun community as it marked the unveiling and dedication of the war memorial in memory of the 11 men from Aurukun who served in the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion, and also Reverend William McKenzie, who was a prisoner of war in France in WW1 and a volunteer in WW2, and in memory of all who served throughout Australia through various wars in defence of our nation. On September 13, 1943 11 men f rom the community of Aurukun enlisted at Aurukun and became members of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion, and all served until March 1946, except for one who passed away from influenza while on leave at Aurukun in April 1945. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) constructed a radar station at Wutan (311 Radar Station) at the mouth of the Archer River in March 1943 and this continued operations until June 1944. In September 1943, a vessel from 2nd Australian Water Transport Group called into Mapoon, Weipa and Aurukun Mission Stations to recruit Aboriginal men for service. They were endlisted and served with the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion. These men had a vast knowledge of the waterways of Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria,

some of whom had worked on pearling luggers, and this knowledge was of immense assistance during the war. The Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion was formed in 1941 and its activities were varied. The Pioneer Company gave assistance to the 17th Australian Field Company which was stationed on Horn Island. Knowledge of local reefs and sandbars allowed the battalion to help the 2nd Australian Water Transport Unit, as well as the 22nd Australian Line Section who were laying an underwater cable, linking communications between the mainland, the Torres Strait and New Guinea. The Battlion’s knowledge of the Torres Strait and its waters were invaluable to the Allied effort. Between October and December 1943, some members of the Battalion went into Papua New Guinea. 870 men of the Torres Strait and Cape York joined the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion and were a very strong force in
the defending of the north of Australia. There were 97 Japanese air raids reported in that Northern Australian region during World War II. 18 bombs fell on Horn Island, making it the second most attacked place in Australia after Darwin. Reverend William MacKenzie also served and dfended Australia. Mr MacKenzie is regarded as an “Aurukun person” as he served the Aurukun people from 1923 to 1924 and then with his wife, Geraldine, from 1025 to 1949, and then again from 1950 to 1965. Mr MacKenzie was a prisoner of war at Messines, France in 1918 in World War I and served in the Volunteer Defence Corp and Army Intelligence in World War II. On ANZAC Day 2013, the families of these Aurukun men who joined with the men of the Torres Strait in defending our country honoured them in the dedication of the war memorial for the Aurukun community. – Photos by Melanie Shaddock

TEN shooters turned out on Saturday, April 20 for the first clay target shoot in Weipa in ages. It was fantastic to see some beginners at the shoot, along with a few more experienced shooters. Once we got over the initial trouble with the thrower breaking targets, we got stuck in and saw some good, consistent shooting from most participants, with the club president setting the standard by smashing the first 15 straight. Some good scores were reached 63/75 being the highest, followed by 58 and 56.
All in all it was an enjoyable day for those who attended and all agreed it was a good start for a return to clay target shooting in Weipa. The next clay target shoot will be on Tuesday, May 21 which will be an afternoon/evening shoot and will suit mine crews 1, 3, 4 and day workers. Anyone wanting to get home early can shoot from 5pm. We would love to see some more beginners, ladies and juniors. There will be a slightly different format and a different scoring system which will make the shooting more competitive for all. – Terry Healey

ROUND five saw three awesome nail-biting finishes and the table is beginning to take shape for the year after the early upsets caused havoc. Port Adelaide and West Coast are probably the only teams who appear to be at the wrong ends of the table at this stage. Port continue to defy gravity and remain unbeaten, while the Eagles are disappointing down the bottom with only one win when they were expected to be high fliers this season. North are also unlucky casualties with only one win after a tough and torrid draw playing the top sides early in the year. Richmond has started to slide with their one-point choke at the weekend to Freo. The Tigers were not at all assisted by the ball hitting the goal umpire in controversy, costing them a match winning six-pointer late in the game. I’m sure I faintly heard the yelling by local Tigers fans above the usual neighbourhood dog barking. West Coast got done in the dying minutes by a plucky Port Power who came from over 40 behind to snatch victory. The Hawks also sank the Kangaroos by three points in the other close one. Essendon continue to power-on with a great ANZAC day victory over Collingwood, while in a wet Wellington, New Zealand the Swans got over the line in a low-scoring affair against St Kilda. Maybe they needed Wellington boots . . . sorry, couldn’t help myself. The Suns beat GWS by 40 but didn’t break away from them until the last 15 minutes of the game. It was the Suns’ highest scoring win in their three year history so they will probably start handing out complete Maccas Happy Meals soon! Carlton has put in another good showing to account for Adelaide, meaning the Blues have started to climb the ladder, much to their fan’s relief. The Lions had to work to overcome the Demons who played much better, even without their main forward Mitch Clark. Geelong also expectedly outclassed the Western Bulldogs. Round six starts Friday night with the Pies taking on St Kilda at the MCG. The Bombers are at home to GWS while the Kangaroos get stiffed again playing an in-form Port. The better games feature the Crows playing Hawthorn and at the MCG, and Richmond will try to out-muscle Geelong. The Suns will be tested on the coast by the Dockers who just survived a scare there last year. Premiers Sydney play host to the Brisbane Lions. Carlton should continue to rise against the Demons and West Coast has a chance to play themselves into form against the Bulldogs. If you took my tips last week you were in for an unusual surprise with a full house! Typically I forgot to enter them myself until after the first ANZAC day game had started and in so doing, dropped the first game. My tips this week: Collingwood, Essendon, North Melbourne, Hawthorn, Geelong, Gold Coast, Sydney, Carlton, West Coast. That’s the wrap! Dallas

TOP 10 TIPPERS
THIS round had a lot of emotion in remembrance of the ANZAC’s, and the passion was definitely felt over the weekend! The weekend started with the historic ANZAC day clash between the Roosters and the Dragons. The Roosters outplayed the Dragons in a dominant display to grab a win. There was another game played on Thursday between the Storm and the Warriors, with the Storm running away victorious in a hard fought battle. Friday only had one game, which I thought was the match of the round. The blockbuster, eventually seeing the Rabbitohs hold out a last charge by the Sea Eagles to claim the win. Super Saturday saw the Cowboys beat the Raiders, and the Broncos beating a depleted Tigers outfit. Then on Sunday the Knights had a convincing win over the Titans, and the struggling Bulldogs found some form to beat the Sharks. Monday night’s game was between the Panthers and the Eels, the Panthers showing a dominant display to run over the Eels quite convincingly. In a preview of round eight, there will be no Thursday night game this week. Friday night’s matches will be between the Broncos and the Rabbitohs, and the Bulldogs verse the Tigers. Super Saturday will have the Storm verse the Raiders and the Eels take on the Cowboys. Then on Sunday there are three games, with the Warriors playing the Titans, the Knights taking on the Sharks, and the Roosters versing the Panthers. Monday night’s match between the Dragons and Sea Eagles will bring round eight to a close. In other news, rugby league lost another young promising footballer on Monday, 20 year old Alex Elisala was a part of the NQ Cowboys squad, and had been at the club for four years. Thoughts and prayers go out to the club, his family and friends. Karl’s Tips: Rabbitohs, Bulldogs, Storm, Cowboys, Warriors, Sharks, Roosters, Sea Eagles. Yours in footy Karl

Spectators entertained by Squirts IT was round two of the Weipa soccer season last Saturday and good numbers turned out despite the ANZAC almost-long weekend. Spectators were in for a treat with this week’s feature game the always-entertaining Squirts White versus Gold. The game kicked-off with a blazing run down the wing from Radian from team Gold. This set the pace for a tight contest of end-to-end attacking soccer with the occasional spinjitsu, stacks-on and dragonfly-chasing thrown in for good measure. Cadell put in a strong first minute with a great defensive block before being distracted by the clouds, the grass and his spinjitsu moves. Rubyn showed some great ball skills and charged in all afternoon scoring several goals, ably backed up by Zac, Raiden and Charlie from team Gold. Raiden and Charlie also put quite a few through the cones to add to Gold’s total of 10 goals. Andy put his body on the line and was outstanding in
defence with several goal-line saves for team White. A couple of hard runs and some big kicks saw Daniel, Sam, Haydn and Andy all score goals for team White. It was an action-packed game, with both teams putting the effort in until the final whistle. The final result was 10 very hot, happy and satisfied four to five-year olds. Results from around the fields, Saturday, April 27: Teens - Green 2 Blue6, Red v Gold not available; Tykes - Red 6 Gold 0; Titans – Blue 6 Red 8. Fixtures for next Saturday, May 4 are: 2.30pm Squirts Gold v White, Teens - Blue v Red, Gold v Green; 3.30pm
Tykes - Blue v Red, Gold Green; Titans - Blue Red. Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your game start time. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Soft brim hats only please - no caps or peaks. Again, an enormous thank you to the referees, coaches and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Please offer your support to help lead a game in the Squirt and Tykes divisions. Coaching is Wednesday afternoons at the oval - Squirts/ Tykes at 4pm and Teens/ Titans at 5pm.

ALL KITTED UP: Weipa Traders’ Trish McLaughlin with Savannah Jia-Craig with her donated Asics gear.
FOLLOWING her selection on the Queensland Oztag representative squad Savannah Jia-Craige has received a helping hand from a local businessman, Jason Torenbeek. Savannah was a member of the Weipa Razorbacks open ladies team which recently competed in the Queensland Oztag Senior State Cup, and will be playing in the representative side competing in the 2013 State of Origin series to be held on June 7 and 8 at Fairymeadow, NSW. When Jason (who is the proprietor of Weipa News & Sports, Weipa Traders, Tackleworld Weipa and Cape York Traders) heard of Savannah’s selection he donated over $400 worth of Asics gear, including shirt, shorts, shoes and kit-bag, to the young player. “I’m really excited to be playing representative Oztag and Jason’s generous donation is a real bonus,” Savannah said this week. Along with the cost of registration for the State of Origin squad Savannah has to find funds for airfares and accommodation for the series. Two donation tins are available for anyone wishing to donate to Savannah’s representative trip, one at Weipa Traders in the Woolworths Shopping Complex, and one at Weipa News & Sports in the McNamara Centre.

Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com from page 1 At Rocky Point there have been some Barra taking soft plastics, with the Ecoda Prawn coming out on top. In the Hey its Barra, Barra and more Barra but there have been a lot of small fish. On one snag I pulled a fish-a-cast on a Rapalla 110 floater. If you are using live bait there has been a better class of fish. There were some quality Grunter on the banks up near the fingers and are taking peeled Prawns and there are a few Jacks in the snags. Out on the current lines there are Queenies feeding on the small baitfish but are taking trolled lures, also amongst the Queenies have been some small Mackerel . Smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. – Cheers, China

Good fishing despite windy weather This week the winds were pretty consistent and blowing most days, but there were a few brave souls who braved the conditions and found a few fish. The beaches to the south have been holding all types of Trevallies and the boys throwing flies are having a ball. The Barra are still about and it is a lot of fun sight-casting to cruising fish. There are still large schools of bait from close inshore to wide offshore and if they are being harassed its worth a troll with Laser Pro 190s and you are in for a chance of a Mackerel. Bottom fishing is a bit hitand-miss and anchoring up correctly is so important. I moved three times the other day until I was happy with where I was laying. Using your depth sounder is very important when chasing quality bottom fish to find the fish holding structures. Stewart McKinnon took two work colleagues, Leanne Murray and Sharon Swass down to the reefs around Red Cliff’s way and after a few moves hit the jackpot. They had their arms stretched with Red Emperor, Fingermark and big Tuskies. I fished with Rachael Campbell wide of where Stewart was and we got some good Tuskies and Fingermark and we would
have caught more but for a huge Queensland groper who decided he needed them more than we did. Chris Allwood skippering the new Tackleworld boat found a great patch of Mackerel feeding on the bait schools and went home with some happy clients. Steve from Weipa Houseboats sent me a picture of a 110cm Jew caught jigging at
Evans Landing while waiting for Tillimay and hopefully will have more to report after their charter. In the rivers the tides were much kinder this week and some good fish were caught. I went for a run up to the Pennefather and fished the lagoon with Robert ArmitageSlark and Maxine Bond and we caught some nice fish on peeled
Prawns and live Poddy Mullet. There were plenty of big Bream falling to the peeled Prawns and Maxine caught a lovely Mangrove Jack on a livie. Closer to home in the Mission River there were a lot of Salmon caught near the bridge and there are still some Barra to be had on live bait at night. continued page 19
