Cape York infrastructure and roads to be upgraded IN a rare show of accord, both sides of the political fence have welcomed last week’s announcement of $210 million in Federal Government funding to upgrade roads and essential community infrastructure, including power and sewerage, in the NPA and Cape York. The funding will deliver: • Upgrades to the road between Mapoon and Weipa and the road connecting Aurukun to the Peninsula Development Road to an all-weather standard; • Improvements to the Jardine River crossing; • The redevelopment of the Seisia Wharf; • Improvements to the raw water pipeline from Bamaga to Seisia; and • Small-scale improvements to community drainage projects. Labor candidate for the seat of Leichhardt Billy Gordon said the funding into roads and infrastructure will help unlock economic development opportunities on Cape York. “The infrastructure projects made possible by this funding will underpin future economic opportunities for some of the most-isolated areas in Far North Queensland.” “My uncle is the Mayor of Old Mapoon, and I know he will be pleased to learn of these funds for the upgrade of the road between Mapoon and Weipa,” Mr Gordon said.  continued page 2

Improvements to Cape York infrastructure announced  from page 1 “I know personally that many people travel to and from Weipa for work, shopping and fishing, so it’s a high use road. “I know the upgrades to Seisia Wharf are only minor but I also know first-hand how important Seisia Wharf is when it comes to getting freight in and out of the Northern Peninsula Area. “The Cape will become more accessible and infrastructure upgrades will make the region more liveable for locals as well as attractive to visitors. I’m looking forward to getting up to the Cape in the next few months,” Mr Gordon said. Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch welcomed the news, but cautioned the government must outline exactly where the money is coming from, and ensure it is locked in before the September 14 election, for the announcement to have any credibility with Cape York residents and businesses. “I welcome any investment in Cape York, it’s a fabulous result,” Mr Entsch said. “There’s no question it’s needed and the sealing of the road between Weipa and Old Mapoon would be fantastic. It’s also great to see they have suddenly discovered where Cape York is. “I only ask that Minister Albanese confirm where he has got the money from and that it is well and truly secured prior to the election, so they aren’t making a promise and then leaving it to

DASHA’S GONE CRAZY

In the slow Himalayan ascent to the Federal election, Our Julia has just had a normal week, while Tony Ears had a wretched one. Labor has dropped again in the polls - quite normal. The press say some nameless Labor members have wheeled out Rudd the Zombie again - yes, that’s normal too. And she was asked socially embarrassing questions by a vicious, empty-headed radio presenter. Yup, just normal.

Her opponent, Tony Ears, should have had an absolutely terrible week - but somehow managed to avoid the shower of trouble altogether. It started when a menu from March 28 was leaked to the press, and I’m sure you heard about that. If you listened to the same news that I did, you would have heard that the menu had several inappropriate comments about Our Julia’s figure, but noone saw it and there is nothing to worry about. The politician mostly closely concerned with the menu’s production is a very nice, levelheaded chap who wouldn’t dream of saying demeaning things about any woman. With Tony’s support, he has put the

Meanwhile, anyone with an internet connection can call up the menu and wonder what sort of national figures would indulge in such puerile, misogynist rubbish. Then the Indonesian government weighed in against Our Tony’s stop-the-boats panacea - turning back asylum seeker boats on the high seas. Indonesia feels it has a natural right and duty to help people smugglers turn an honest dollar and, no matter what Tony says, if they send boats south, we had better receive them, no matter who is Prime Minister.

the next government to find out where the money is coming from. “Otherwise at the end of the day it could be a whole lot of hollow promises and it’s the people of Cape York who will end up disappointed and – yet again – neglected.” Minister for Infrastructure and Funding Development, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Regional Services, Local Communities and Territories Catherine King, and Senator Jan McLucas announced the funding in Cairns on June 13. Ms King said the investment would make people’s lives easier and businesses more competitive. “Upgrading these roads to an allweather standard will mean fewer disruptions for locals as well as business owners and tourists during the Far North’s renowned wet seasons,” she said. Labor FNQ Senator Jan McLucas said the infrastructure investments would make economic development opportunities available to communities in Cape York. “These improvements to key infrastructure will make an immense difference to people and business in Cape York. The redevelopment of the Seisia Wharf will open the region up to further economic opportunities.” Mr Entsch admitted that his “cynical side” was cautious, given the government’s recent record in making spending commitments that they are unlikely to have to fulfil after the election.

To make matters even worse, industrial relations have come back to haunt Tony. He is very sensitive about his history here, and pours the massage oil over any questions. Unfortunately for him, a few misguided people, both opponents and supporters, continue to ask for policy statements and his fig-leaf is slipping. W h o w o n t h e w e e k ’s feuding? The smart people who know about these things, and just happen to run our newspapers and television are unanimous in handing the laurels to Tony Ears. Why? Well, you don’t expect a rabid socialist woman to win, do you?

Emergency aircraft landing: Coen Police to the rescue TWo Victorian men are very thankful for the assistance of local police and Coen’s Aboriginal Police tracker, Barry Port after their ‘Grey Nomad’ adventure in the sky ended abruptly on Tuesday, June 11. Officer in Charge of Coen Police station, Sergeant Matthew Moloney helped co-ordinate the search for the two men in the remote western region of Cape York Peninsula. Police tracker Barry Port and Senior Constable Justin Heinneman left Coen Tuesday afternoon in an effort to locate the men at a remote dirt airstrip at Kenchering Outstation. The crew reached Watharin Outstation by nightfall and camped with local Indigenous Rangers and resumed the search for the men early Wednesday morning. Thankfully the men stayed with their aircraft which made locating them much easier. The men were located safe and well however both had an uncomfortable night in the cold battling an unwanted insect invasion of midgies and sandflies. The wife of one of the located men told Police she was relieved to hear the good news that both men were safe and sound and she was terribly grateful for the assistance of Sergeant Moloney, his team in Coen and the local Aboriginal Rangers.

State recognises traditional ownership of Kowanyama The Queensland Government formally recognised Indigenous ownership of more than 244,000 hectares of land at Kowanyama, more than 300 kilometres south of Weipa, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs David Kempton said Aboriginal freehold title for the land had been handed over under the Aboriginal Land Act 1991 to the native title holders, the Kowanyama people. “Title to the land has been handed over to Abm Elgoring Ambung Aboriginal Corporation Registered Native Title

Body Corporate (RNTBC) as the representative of the native title holders of Kowanyama,” Mr Kempton said. “The Aboriginal freehold title deed covers land within the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire but does not include the town area which will remain Deed of Grant in Trust land under the trusteeship of the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council. “Handing over the land acknowledges the rights of the Kowanyama People to manage the land for the native title holders.” Mr Kempton said the handover had special significance for the approximately 1,200

members of the Kowanyama community. “Kowanyama was established in 1916 as the Mitchell River Mission after the old Trubanamen Mission on Topsy Creek site from 1905 was abandoned,” he said. “Today sees the Kowanyama People’s traditional lands returned for their use, management and enjoyment now and into the future.” “Importantly it recognises their traditional, spiritual and cultural connections to their land.’’ Mr Kempton said negotiations for the transfer of the land began in 2009 after the Kow-

anyama People were granted Native Title over the land. “The Kowanyama People and the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council have worked diligently with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to gain Aboriginal freehold title to their land,” he said. “Their vision and dedication have been vital to achieving this historic outcome and these qualities will help the Kowanyama community prosper into the future. “Returning this land will help foster the Kowanyama People’s capacity for self-development, self-reliance and cultural integrity.”

GET ready to roll-up your swag, pack-up your tent and get your “country on” at the Bramwell Station Bush Carnival. The three-day bush carnival will be held at the Bramwell Station Tourist Park on July 5, 6 and 7 and promises to be a weekend of country fun for young and the young-at heart, while aiding the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Bush Carnival hosts Wendy and Vince conceived the idea as a way to promote not only their beautiful part of Cape York but also give visitors and locals an opportunity to get to know the 1330sq km station. E v e n t o r g a n i s e r, K e n Godfrey said the idea was to get people from neighbouring communities together for a fun weekend. “We are hoping to attract people from Weipa, Bamaga, Archer River and Lockhart River – in fact all our neighbouring Cape York communities,” Ken told the Western Cape Bulletin. “It would be fantastic to see the Bush Carnival become an annual event where locals can have a catch-up and tourists can experience some good oldfashioned country hospitality.” The fun begins on Friday, July 5 and parents will be pleased to know there will be plenty to keep the kids occupied. “We want the kids to run around and have fun in a safe environment,” Ken said. “There will be organised activities for the kids over the weekend including egg and spoon races, foot races, tug o’ war and horseshoe throwing competitions to name a few.” “There will also be music activities for the children to get involved in.” “Jelly-eating and apple-

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Weipa Woolies congratulations

The Weipa Woolworths supermarket crew manning the sausage sizzle stand at the Weipa Fishing Classic. Photo: Vivienne Kruckow.

The 2013 Weipa Fishing Classic was well supported by the whole Weipa community and Woolworths Weipa was proud to be a part of the this iconic annual event that has now become a great community celebration. My team and I would like to congratulate the

local community for supporting Woolworths and the sausage sizzle over the three days of the event. The Woolies social club should also be congratulated for organising the lead-up barbecues held in-store over the four weeks prior to the Classic, as well as organising the very successful raffle that was drawn at the event. All proceeds from the raffle that was drawn on-stage, as well as the proceeds from the barbecue at the event will be donated to Weipa Girl Guides, Weipa Wildlife Care, and the Fresh Food Kids Hospital Appeal. The final amount raised, thanks to our ever-giving community, is $6900. I would like to thank the Fishing Classic committee for their commitment in bringing this event to life – a job well done. To the Girl Guides, thank you for doing what Guides do “Be true to themselves and support their community”. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the support and donations my team received from our national team. It was a fantastic response to an idea that grew into a great result for three very deserving recipients. Jenny Everist and team

On behalf of Accor hotels and Resorts I would like to once again thank you all, the Weipa community for an amazing weekend of serious fun and fishing during the 2013 Weipa Fishing Classic. This was Accor ’s third year as sponsors of the Classic, and we look forward to many happy returns. The Classic moves from strength to strength every year and the committee should be commended for their hard work and dedication. On a more personal note, I feel more and more at home when I visit Weipa and always look forward to my next visit.

I also enjoy welc o m i n g t h e We i p a community to Mercure Cairns Harbourside and thank you for your support. Thank you again Weipa. See you all soon. David Penney Sales and Marketing Manager Mercure Cairns Harbourside

Support our kids I’m proud of Labor’s national Plan for School Improvement which will see Leichhardt students benefit from an increase in school funding of nearly 70 per cent over the next six years. Our larger schools like Cairns, Trinity Bay, Cairns West and Woree will all receive big increases per student of up to 63 per cent. More disadvantaged schools like Kowanyama, the Western Cape College, NPA State College and Tagai will also benefit with over 60 per cent more funding per student. But this is only going to happen if Premier Newman endorses the program. While Campbell Newman dithers, I urge parents to express their support by signing the petition at www.getup. org.au/everychild or call the Premier’s office on 3224 4500. Australia is in a strong financial position. Relative to other developed countries we have come out of the Global Financial Crisis stronger than we went into it. Internationally our borrowings are low. There is no excuse for Queensland not to take this fantastic opportunity. Billy Gordon, ALP Candidate for Leichhardt LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Napranum Preschool goes Walkabout

NAPRANUM PRESCHOOLERS: Walkabout connects children to their past and the real world.

C&K Napranum Community Preschool and Kindergarten has introduced Walkabout into the kindergarten program. Every Thursday the children, accompanied by their teachers and often families and other members of the remote Cape York Aboriginal community, venture outside the preschool gates to explore their surroundings and learn the best way children do – through their interests. This is just one of the reasons the service received a C&K Sustainability Award recently at the Queensland Early Childhood Conference on June 1 and 2. The teaching team made the long journey from north-west Cape York Peninsula to Brisbane to accept the award, where they were praised by organisers for their efforts in sustaining their local culture and community through their work. Kindergarten director Sonia Schuh said Walkabout was connecting children to their past and their real world. “As Indigenous peoples, we have done Walkabout for thousands of years,” Sonia said. “These children are entitled to go on Walkabout.” “It is like school without the school building. The people we have met, the knowledge that we have shared; the children may not remember everything in the short term and that doesn’t matter. The fact that they have been there, been part of the journey,

the knowledge will come back to them.” Sonia said it was the previous Queensland Early Childhood Conference which discussed the benefits of nature pedagogy and risk that inspired her to start Walkabout. The Preschool had gone on Walkabout many years ago but stopped due to regulations. “The regulations are there to keep our children safe and of course safety is our first priority. The regulations shouldn’t be your block or the boundary or the jail to not have courage to go outside the gate,” she said. “Getting out of our little narrow world, out of our little fenced off area of our Preschool, out of our little world, out of what we know, out of our safe regulated environment and into the real world.” “The biggest justification for Walkabout is that the children want to do it. The children are guided by their interests, their questions, the information they want extended into knowledge. We are not guiding children anywhere if we remain behind the fence.” Parents and other members of the community are invited to join Walkabout. Sometimes the children and staff go on Walkabout to the beach and pick up netting, old tyres, and other things they know do not belong on the beach. Walkabout is documented with pictures and when they

TUXWORTH & WOODS CARRIERS

are back in the classroom, the children explore what they have discovered further with the use of technology. “We use Mr Google to research the world beyond Napranum. We want the children to understand life beyond Napranum as 21st century global citizens. We want our children to be able to make it anywhere else in the world.” “Sustainability is about sustaining Napranum people, our cultural identity and our way of life, growing our next generation through our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and being informed by the past and guiding our future.” “The more educated people we have in Napranum, the more we have a future,” she said.” Awards organiser Sharon Mehan said education for sustainability was about more than education about nature. “It includes people and culture as well as how we live today and its impact on the future. The Walkabout experience showed educators sharing with the children an authentic understanding of culture, time and place within the local context as well as the children’s role in establishing an individual and shared future,” she said. “The educators gave the children a platform for their voice to be heard by the community and an authentic grounding in their role and responsibility to the land it’s people.”

Our aim is to assist children in Cambodia by providing them with an education that empowers them to break the poverty cycle they and their families are trapped in. We have established orphanages in Cambodia and funds raised through donations to Books With No Borders pay for underprivileged children and young adults to attend private schools and universities where they receive an education that will ensure a brighter future for them. We thank you all for your continued support of this charity!

Powerful gathering of Napranum men By Giembra Busmer

EMPOWERING men in a relaxed environment was the theme for a two-day Napranum Men’s Group gathering at Bouchat last week. Around 40 Napranum men attended the forum, facilitated by the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs (DATSIMA), Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC), Napranum Men’s Group and Mensheds Australia. Far North Queensland Mensheds co-ordinator, Jesse Sagaukaz said the meeting at Bouchat was an historical occasion. “We wanted the men to feel comfortable in their own country and relaxed,” Jesse explained. “Sitting around the fire having a cup of tea is symbolic – it is where all issues of men are discussed and the future is paved, and that’s what this two-day forum is all about.” Jesse said the men would be discussing real-life issues they experience in Napranum. “We will be discussing three main issues within Indigenous communities: law, health and education. “The process empowers the men to identify the problems, take ownership of the problems, and find out ways and means to fix the problems.” NASC mayor, Philemon Mene addressed the men during the first morning’ gathering explaining problems must be addressed at the home level first. “Over time we men have lost control. When you have a breakdown in health, law and education society becomes unstable, and this is what we must recognise and start addressing in our own homes. “By guiding our children we can address problems in our society. And it is never too late. If you are 22 or 35, make a choice and start getting support,” Philemon said. DATSIMA project support officer August Stevens, who is based in Cooktown, attended the forum and echoed Philemon’s statements. “The mayor is saying exactly what I’m thinking. This is about men going back to being men – healing the men first, and then working with healing the families,” August said. “In my support role I will be assisting the men to put together issues and look for outcomes in partnership with health, education and Police, and in-line with the Napranum Community 10-year plan. “We are also looking at building a stronger bridge between Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa

and the Napranum community,” he said. Alex Petridis, Mensheds Australia chief executive officer, said the work the organisation does is not just aimed at older men but at younger people also, and is an ongoing process. “Engaging with young people, empowering, and retraining their thought processes is very important,” Alex said. “It’s not just men, it’s men being men good fathers, good uncles, good husbands which in turn makes them good community members and ultimately good leaders. “You can’t just expect the government to walk in and say ‘we want to run a program’ – it’s not going to work, you are destined to failure. This men’s

NPA Mensheds co-ordinator Cliff Wasiu held a stall at the Bouchat gathering.

“The men are bringing to the meeting an attitude for change. These events are about projecting information with understanding. Once we get that information in there, and the men get that understanding, we need to identify trigger points – how are we going to shift attitudes and behaviour? That comes down to the individual, but we are needing to recognise that at events like this.” – Philemon Mene, NASC Mayor

group program nurtures over time.” Following the two-day discussions the group’s ideas will be put on the table and a working document will be presented to service providers. “This document belongs to the men of the Napranum community, “ Jesse said. “They have ownership of it and the

power to pursue outcomes from their discussions.” A Cape York Men’s Forum will be held in Laura to coincide with the Laura Dance Festival (June 21-23) which will not only celebrate the opening of the Laura Menshed but also give Cape York men the opportunity to continue their important discussions.

 Back Beach clean-up FROM Tuesday, June 24 to Friday, June 28 Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers, GhostNets Australia and Tangaroa Blue are joining forces to clear a backlog of marine debris which has collected on Mapoon’s Back Beach and a challenge has been set. At the 2012 Chilli Beach clean-up volunteers plucked almost 4696 thongs from the Eastern Cape York beach and the challenge has been put to Mapoon volunteers to beat the record. Back Beach is a hot-spot for marine debris, mostly from South East Asia, which is brought in on the currents and winds. Mapoon has been identified as having the most ghost nets collected per kilometre in Australia’s northern coastline, which means more marine debris too. Volunteers can assist in the clean-up for a day or a week and organisers will be at Back Beach each morning from 7am. All clean-up materials are provided and all plastics collected will be baled and trucked to Brisbane for recycling so they don’t end up in the local landfill. So come and lend a hand and help the Mapoon mob clean-up Back Beach as they attempt to break the thongcollecting record currently held by the Lockhart mob. For more information contact Tangaroa Blue’s Heidi Taylor (0410 166 684) or Ghost Nets Australia’s Queensland projects officer Jen Goldberg (4042 1857).

Weipa birthing services still up to two years away BIRTHING services in Weipa are not likely to be available for at least another 18 months to two years Cape York Hospital and Health Service chief executive Susan Turner said this week. After an absence of 11 years birthing services will be re-introduced at Cooktown early next year however the reintroduction of Weipa services is still a way off. Birthing services at both Weipa and Cooktown were scaled back progressively from 2001, and since 2003 only an emergency birthing service has been available at both facilities, along with full ante and post-natal clinics. The scaling back of birthing services was due to a lack of doctors available locally with the additional procedural skills in anaesthetics and obstetrics necessary for emergency caesarean sections should the need arise, or to deal with any other major medical complications during birth. This made it unsafe to offer elective deliveries. Ms Turner said the Cape York HHS intended to re-

introduce low-risk birthing services at Weipa. She said a wider maternity services plan for the whole of Cape York was being developed that would look at what needed to be put in place at the Weipa Integrated Health Service so as to allow low-risk birthing services to be re-introduced there safely and sustainably. “We expect the maternity services plan to be completed by the end of this year and this will help us develop a program to re-introduce birthing services at Weipa,’’ she said. “However, this is unlikely to be for another 18 months to two years as there will be a lot to do and we want to concentrate on getting the Cooktown service up and running first.’’ Ms Turner said the Cape York maternity services plan also would examine the feasibility of proposals to expand the current, Cairnsbased flying obstetrician and gynaecologist (FOG) service in the region. “But we need to do a lot of investigation first.’’

Bringing industry and education closer together SINCE 2006, the number of Western Cape College students completing their senior certificate has more than doubled. Indigenous student representation in grade 12 has also increased by 50 per cent in that time, since Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa partnered with the Western Cape College after a shortage of skilled local workers was realised. Leon Proud, Western Cape College principal, says the partnership sees both parties meet quarterly, to increase the employability of our local students. “Education is the pathway to employment, and a collaborative approach to addressing social issues and challenges is the most effective way of up-skilling our local talent,” Mr Proud explains. Harris van Beek, senior consultant with Nous Group, has been facilitating the quarterly forums since the beginning, and believes that skilled employees that have knowledge and connection to country, is a significant advantage to a mining operation. “This partnership has been a transformative experience for both organisations—the region’s two biggest employers have long term collaboration to support local youth. It’s a privilege to be part of these constructive, practical and

outcomes-focused discussions,” Mr van Beek said. The Building Our Local Talent (BOLT) strategy was established by the partnership, to implement effective structured school-to-work pathways. It was expanded in 2011 to better link school-based programmes with core industry requirements, providing opportunities to students such as: employment, education, career advice and training. Training has taken on many forms, including work experience, school based traineeships, traineeships and apprenticeships. Rio Tinto Alcan’s general manager, Weipa operations, Gareth Manderson, says collectively the organisations are striving for 100 per cent of Western Cape College gradu-

ates to receive either an OP score, complete a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, be on a clearly articulated Vocational Education Training pathway or gain employment. “We recognise this as a big job for us to achieve through the challenges at hand, and the partnership’s quarterly forums and pathways are helping support this goal,” Mr Manderson said. “Building a pipeline of local talent contributes to the sustainable economic prosperity for Western Cape communities, and is beneficial for everyone.” For more information about the partnership between Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and the Western Cape College, call the freecall feedback hotline (1800 707 633) or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com

Focus on budgeting WITHIN this month’s update, we share with you a snapshot of economic occurrences nationally and from around the globe. May was packed with economic events. The USA came out stronger as did Japan. Europe now looks set to deal with its problems, China is a little softer than it was, and Australia continues to struggle. Markets amplified these shocks. The ASX 200 was down about -5% over May while the big indexes such as the S&P 500, the FTSE and the DAX were all up by more than 2%! There were two big-ticket items for Australia in May. China looks a bit softer and iron ore prices slipped around 14%. That took down smaller miners and mining services companies were just collateral damage. The other big contributor to a poor May for the ASX is that the dividend yield story backed off, along with the ‘Aussie’ dollar, as arguably foreign investors exited the play. Japan also seemingly caused some problems for our markets but this should have been a non-event. The Nikkei fell -7% in one day and -3% more in the next two but

TRIBAL BIBLE DID Simon the Black who carried the cross for Jesus on his way to Calvary (Golgotha) have such an experience just by being close to Jesus for a short time that he and his family became Christians? Did Alexander the other son also become a believer? (Acts Ch 19 v 33). It certainly seems that way. Now the time had arrived for the Lord Jesus to be crucified, so let’s get a mind picture of what the scene looked like when he was being prepared for crucifixion.

the Nikkei fall was overdue because of a ridiculously strong rally over the previous 6 – 7 months! The correction was needed to prevent a bigger problem further down the track. Big news at home also abounded. The RBA cut rates to 2.75% from 3% the lowest rate since 1960. The Budget turned out to be a non-event after a very tense build-up. Ford announced it is phasing out manufacturing in this country and our dollar dropped like a stone through parity and down to around 96 cents. We now think our market is undervalued and we still believe it will finish somewhere around 5,300 – 5,500 at the end of the year. It is quite reasonable that many investors feel a bit battered and bruised but we think the move in May was the shake-out we had to have – to borrow a Paul Keating type phrase.

We still read from Mark Ch 15 vs 21-32. It was morning when they would have stripped him naked, and threw his clothing to one side, and then thrown Jesus on the rough, splintered wooden cross while it was lying on the ground, and nailed him to it. Imagine the pain lancing through him with a back that was already raw from the whips! There would have been the women who were close to Jesus including his mother, Mary, (Mark 15 vs 40-41) and the disciple John standing

there (John Ch 19 vs 25-27) to be with him at his crucifixion. And people passing by joined with the Jewish religious leaders in the mockery of Jesus saying “Aha! You were going to tear down the Temple and build it up again in three days! Now come down from the cross and save yourself!” (Mark 15 vs 29-30). “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Let us see the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him!” Jesus love in action.

Rev Michael Connolly.

Young Western Cape Kookaburras are out of the nest and taking on an important role in the Kookaburra family. If you see one Kookaburra around, it’s likely that a whole family is living near you – and there are plenty of things you can do to be a Backyard Buddy to Kookaburras. “Around this time of year, Kookaburras that were only chicks a little while ago are now old enough to begin helping out their parents,” said Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “These young birds stay with their family group for up to four years, raising siblings and helping their family to defend their home turf.” “The Kookaburra’s distinctive ‘koo-hoo-hoo-hoo-haa-haahaa-haa’ isn’t just a belly laugh – it’s a territorial display.” “Kookaburras make different sounds to communicate,” said Ms Bradshaw. “At any time of year they chuckle to locate family members. During the breeding season from September to January they make a ‘chuck’ to find their family, and ‘squawk’ to beg for food from other Kookaburras in their group.” “Their famous laugh tells other Kookaburras that ‘This is our home, and we will fight for it.’ If you listen out for these calls, usually made in chorus by a family of Kookaburras, you should be able to discover the boundaries of their territory.” “Watch out if you hear a ‘Kooaa’ and a loud cackle – the first call is a warning to the family group, and the second signals aggression. Kookaburras cackle maniacally before two warring groups clash over territory.” “To defend their home, the Laughing Kookaburras we have in Queensland dart sharply to and fro, passing each other in mid-air like trapeze artists. Barrages of sinister laughter reverberate between the disputing groups, amongst the bright flashes of their brown and blue wings.” Ms Bradshaw said. “We’re also lucky enough to have Blue-winged Kookaburras in Queensland, and their territorial disputes look different. These guys are a bit less precise – they circle and chase intruders in a loose and raucous fashion.” “One Kookaburra family’s territory can extend up to a hundred house blocks and include some parkland as well. Kookaburras are quite at home in urban areas, so they’re not an uncommon sight.” “As young Kookaburras don’t go off and start their own families for a number of years, the overall birth rate of the species is low. Kookaburras can find themselves in a lot of trouble if a sudden event such as habitat destruction or a misuse of pesticides wipes out a number of birds. It will take the local population a long time to recover.” “But there are a lot of simple things we can do to protect this national icon, our laughing buddy. And Kookaburras are great to have around – not only do they provide lots of entertainment, but they eat the mice, insects and even small snakes from our gardens too!” said Ms Bradshaw.

The exploration of Cape York was undertaken over a long period of time by a range of navigators and explorers as well as overlanders, prospectors, miners, settlers and others. Amongst these was William hann who played his part in the story of Cape York exploration in 1872. William Hann was a pastoralist from the Charters Towers region who was commissioned by the Queensland government to undertake an exploratory expedition into Cape York Peninsula. The government, wishing to learn more about this isolated region of the colony, specifically asked him to investigate both the pastoralist and mining potential of the Cape York region as far north as Port Stewart. In due course he reported

that the land he had traversed was “fair, second class pastoral country”, but reported more favourably on the area’s mineral potential. It was to be a member of Hann’s expedition, Fred Warner, who was to discover gold at a place that was later to be called Warner’s Gully, on the Palmer River. It is said that Warner’s reward for his discovery was to claim the pound of tobacco offered by Hann to whoever it was to first discover gold. In his reports to the government, Hann was not confident that the Palmer field would be payable and was concerned that the area’s relative isolation as well as the prevailing harsh climatic conditions, would prove to be major obstacles for the new goldfield. However, Hann was later to benefit from the influx of miners and others to the Palmer River goldfield. Drawing on his experience in the pastoral industry, William Hann, together with D’Arcy Uhr and Charlie Scrutton overlanded cattle from Ravenswood, Mt. McConnel, Havilah and Salisbury Downs to the Palmer River goldfield, profiting as a result. This photograph shows William Hann around the time of his successful expedition into Cape York.

Simple tips to help protect our Kookaburras • Avoid spraying chemicals in your garden as they could affect other species than the ones you’re targeting. • Don’t put rodent poison outdoors as a Kookaburra could eat a poisoned mouse and become ill or die. • Keep your pets indoors, especially cats at night, as they can disturb or even attack native birds. • If you find an injured Kookaburra, call your local animal rescue and rehabilitation group or vet. • Leave old trees around your area as these provide perfect nesting sites for Kookaburras, and plentiful shade and fresh air for us. • Plant new gum trees so that there will be plenty of good nesting sites available in the future. • If you want to see Kookaburras up close, try including some stumps and rocks around your garden—Kookaburras love to sit on them. • Mulch your garden and this will attract lizards and insects. If you’re lucky, Kookaburras will discover that your place is a great place to catch a meal. • Kookaburras have fantastic hunting skills, and make a great living catching their natural prey. They don’t need us to feed them or they could become dependent on people or become sick.

The work will take approximately five weeks to complete. The dredgers, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability so boaties are asked to take note of the displayed warning flags and lights. Local and visiting boaties are asked to take extra care during this time. Dredging at the Port of Weipa needs to be carried out to ensure that safe, navigable shipping depths are maintained. Strict environmental controls and management measures will be implemented throughout the campaign to minimise the risk of any impact on the marine environment. RUMOUR HAS IT . . . that a young adult rider on his first outing at the BMX track on Friday night made quite an impression . . . on the tuckshop that is! By all accounts the spectators moved faster than the rider did as he left the track, skidding across the grass before coming to a resounding halt. No-one was injured in the incident. Unfortunately the spectacle was not recorded for posterity, which is a pity as The Bully was told it had “Funniest Home Videos” all over it! Advertisement

SATURDAY saw another great turnout at the Cape York motorcycle club’s practice day. After a couple of weeks break due to the Fishing Classic and other commitments, it was clear everyone was eager for a ride. Thirty-one riders for the day showed the depth forming in the club with plenty of regulars on the sidelines watching. In the 18 months I’ve personally been involved, I haven’t seen a better turnout yet – hats off to all involved. The seniors started off the day and were impressed with the track prep that laid ahead. With plenty of senior riders on the day, Cooper led the pack once again and showed the speed he used to win an overall at the recent North Queensland rounds. If anything he may have come home even quicker than when he left. Plenty of other senior riders are improving week by week and should soon be snapping at his heels. Look out Cooper the swappers are coming. Well done to the new senior riders including Griffo, who strapped on his nice shiny new boots and had a go – well done. The next group to hit the track was the fast-growing pack of junior lites. With around a dozen

of these guys it’s great to see the numbers triple in the last few months. The likes of Liam Faull, Conor Taylor and Matt Bolton were on rails and are going to be hard to catch as their riding is constantly improving. The senior boys will have a hard time keeping up soon enough. Well done to all the junior lites guys, as they put on a good display of riding and were conscience of each other’s safety which is what our practice days are all about. The little fellas in the mini group were lucky last and what a crazy bunch of kids they are. The track was a lot more mini bike-friendly on the weekend, and by the looks on their faces riding off, they were having a blast. To see these young kids having so much fun and the way they enjoy their riding is awesome. Well done to all involved and thank you to everyone for their help. Next track day is on this Sunday, June 23 from 7am. Please come out, have a look and if you have a bike maybe even give it a go. For more information contact myself (0413 620 727) or check out our group on Facebook, Cape York Motorcycle Club. – Chas

AFL TIPPER’S SCOREBOARD TOP 10 TIPPERS Sheedz rehny

THE Hawks continue their winning streak and the Tigers look like finals material again, for a while. Hawthorn has now taken their winning streak out to ten, their best result since the 1970s. They overpowered Carlton in the last quarter to win by 2 goals. Richmond had a strong win over the Crows in Adelaide to consolidate their spot in the eight. Fremantle spoiled Simon Black’s club record 319th game by knocking off the Lions in the West. Meanwhile Essendon were too strong and pulled away from the Suns in the last quarter. Port played themselves back into some form against GWS in Sydney and Collingwood were too good for the Bulldogs. The other teams all had byes. Round 13 is unlucky for West Coast who have drawn the Hawks juggernaut in a Friday Night game at Etihad Stadium. Port will get to have a reality check this week when they face the high flying Swans. St Kilda should get on the board again over the Demons as should Richmond over the Western Bulldogs. Fremantle could almost end North Melbourne’s finals chances in Perth. The Geelong Cats travel to Brisbane for a training run against the Lions on Sunday. The other teams all have byes to end this first group of split rounds and next week we are back to a full round of games. Hoping my injury ridden Suns can get fit during their bye this week before I take a trip down to see them take on the Crows at the Gold Coast in round 14. Thanks to “Scoop Dog” for filling in for me last week! Who would have thought a dog could write so well? Scoop could almost come up to school to help out in some of my English classes! Think of all those great canine examples of Alliteration such as “Scoop the Shakespeare Staffy” and Onomatopoeias like “Woof”. My Tips – Hawthorn, Sydney, St Kilda, Richmond, Fremantle, Geelong. That’s the wrap! Dallas

TOP 10 TIPPERS

A FEW surprising losses throughout the round as teams outside of the top eight fight to better their chances in winning the premiership. Friday night brought us two very entertaining games, with the Cowboys getting a win against the Dragons, and the Bulldogs holding out the Sea Eagles in a hardy fought match. Saturday’s games were two impressive wins, with the Raiders getting a win over the Panthers, and the Sharks beating the Eels. Super Sunday brought Rugby league to Far North Queensland with the Rabbitohs beating the Titans in an entertaining spectacle. Then the Storm held out the Knights in a close encounter, and the Warriors beat the Roosters. Monday night’s game ended the round as the Broncos found some form to beat the struggling Tigers. As Round 15 is leading into Origin two, there are eight teams having a bye this weekend, with only one game being played each night over the round. Friday night’s game is between the Bulldogs and the Roosters, with the Bulldogs finding some great form lately this will be a great match. On Saturday the Tigers will play the Raiders, as the Raiders try to cement their spot in the top eight. Then on Sunday the Eel’s will play the Rabbitohs. The Monday night game is between the Titans and Storm. This looks like it will be a very entertaining match with both teams missing key players in origin camp. Karl’s Tips: Bulldogs, Raiders, Rabbitohs, Titans. On another note, local rugby league is set to kick-off with Weipa hosting the first round of the Cape Cluster this Saturday. The Cluster involves teams travelling from Kowanyama, Pormpurraw, Coen, Lockhart, Aurukun, Weipa, Napranum, and the NPA. So come down and support the local competition and see some entertaining games. Yours in footy, Karl

Family-friendly martial arts proves popular  from page 20 Assistant instructor, first grade Jayson Keough, is training hard at the moment in an effort to improve his fitness, flexibility and technical skill to an optimum level, as it is expected that he will be sitting his black belt grading examination in December when all black belt grading examinations are done by eighth degree world master, Chong Chul Rhee himself. Rhee Taekwondo lessons cater for juniors that are school age and above, as well as adult classes. Students are expected to abide by the values of selfdiscipline and respect, which

are the ideologies that the school has based itself upon. Classes operate every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the Western Cape College Indoor Sports Hall. A special mention must be given to Kylie Keough and Sandra Tarlinton for their contribution to the secretarial management of the centre, it would be impossible to maintain such an organisation without people like this. Anyone interested in further information about Rhee Taekwondo training should contact instructor Jacob Gigliotti (0409 879 290) or assistant instructor Jayson Keough (0429 095 136).

OvEr the June long weekend six Central Cape Suns junior rugby league players got the chance to compete in the North Queensland Championships in Townsville. The players made the long trip down via car with Cape York NRL development officer Karl Adams, which took fourteen hours each way. The two-day championships consisted of representative teams from Cairns, Townsville, Innisfail/Eacham, and the Outback. There were every age group from under-13s through to under-16s competing over the weekend. Gabriel Bon, Aidan Woodley, Jefferson Pablo, Caleb Hansen and Jarred Collier joined in the Outback team in the under-13s age group and under-15s, and Ryan Madua played for Innisfail/Eacham in the under-16s. Gabriel Bon was awarded “Player of the Carnival” for the under-15s and was picked in the North Queensland Merit Side.

Player of the Carnival: Gabriel Bon.

NRL development officer Karl Adams said that all boys who participated played well and the standard of the games were at a high level. “This was a great chance to get the Central Cape juniors exposed to that level of rugby league,” Karl said.

Hot contenders on Weipa squash courts THE Weipa squash competition has kicked off with a great start to the year, with hot contenders and great sporting spirit in both A and B grades. The club has also enjoyed watching newcomers to squash improve each week. There are now only two weeks left in the competition with finals commencing straight after the school holidays. Stay tuned for an update on the teams that will be playing in the finals. For those people that missed out on playing squash in the first season don’t worry as the second season of squash will commence July 2013.

The two top A grade contenders Jarrod Stockman (Team Trout) and Owen Witt (Team Spanish Mackerel) battle to the end with five games.

– Joe Buckley, Weipa Squash Club president

The benefits of squash Squash is an excellent way to burn calories. About 60 minutes of squash burns about 700 calories. Over 12 months, this works out at a total of 248,200 calories. This is the equivalent of 32kg of weight. Squash also improves blood flow, regulates blood pressure and helps prevent osteoporosis.

weren’t very good. We only got a few small Tuskers and very good Cod that took a liking to a small reef fish which we released after boating the Cod. There was lots of floating weed on the surface and in the end it made trolling nearly impossible so we called it quits for the day. The river systems have been going okay but live bait seems to be the key and lots of it. Bream are killing most before the serious fish get a chance to find them. I was talking to Dave Newman who has been getting a lot of fish, but not much in size and he was saying that he found some Fingermark in a hole that wouldn’t take a livie, so he tried some squid. That did the trick and he landed a few. It’s hard to pick which system is working better but I think just get out there and try a few spots until something happens. The Mission River Bridge is still giving up a few Barra and Grunter as well as the ever present Queenfish. Darren Lee went up to the Wenlock and launched at Clough’s Landing. He reported lots of small Barra but had an enjoyable weekend anyway. So until next week smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

Well this week’s windy weather didn’t surprise anyone but when Friday dawned calm and clear there was hope for Saturday. With my new Humminbird 898 depth sounder I was willing to go and give the deep blue sea a go. The wind had come up again overnight and the swell hadn’t dropped at all so it made for a pretty interesting ride down the coast for my crew for the day, John Dean. Our plan was to fish the reefs down around Red Cliffs so we decided to troll down as it was more conducive to the conditions. As we neared our destination my drag let out the sound we all love to hear. After a short fight a beautiful Long Tail Tuna was boated and released to fight another day, not the Mackerel we were hoping for. We found some interesting bottom features so we set the pick and first drop landed two sharks, now my crew member should have known better but was bitten by the shark when unhooking it. Rule 16 - never put your fingers or body parts in a shark’s mouth. The crew from Screamin Seaman came in from out wider and caught a nice sized Tusker, but not much else so they made frequent moves to try and locate the fish. We also adopted the same tactics as the water conditions

No-oNe could have anticipated the surge of interest that Rhee Taekwondo Weipa would generate within days of opening their doors. It appears that there has been a thirst for a familyoriented, martial arts school within the Weipa community and they have embraced the branch as it continues to grow from strength to strength. Rhee Taekwondo Weipa is operated by branch instructor Jacob Gigliotti, who has 10 years experience with the art of Rhee Taekwondo and previously ran a centre in Townsville. He is assisted by first grade Jayson Keough, instructor Albert Agale and sixth grade Robert Ashford, who add a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to classes. The first Weipa Action Day and official grading took place on the evening of Thursday, June 6. Third degree regional instructor and grading examiner, Greg Blair attended the event and was impressed with the determination and technique demonstrated by the students of Weipa. “It is fantastic to see coloured belts throughout the training hall,” Mr Blair said.  continued page 18
