Interest takes-off in Weipa to Cairns route
Edition 398
Wednesday, June 26, 2013
THE State Government has agreed to deregulate air services between Cairns and Weipa from the end of 2014, allowing the route to open up to new operators, more competition and new services. In May, Virgin Australia told the Western Cape Bulletin that it believes the Weipa to Cairns route was capable of sustaining competition, and that air fares would be

reduced by as much as 30 per cent. Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch said he was pleased to hear the Weipa to Cairns route would be deregulated. “Competition is a good thing. I have spoken to both Virgin Australia and Skytrans and they have both expressed a desire to service this route,” Mr Entsch said. continued page 2

Do they have to choose between thongs or work boots because their only decent pair of shoes has given up and they won’t get to Cairns for another month? Then there is the whole business of waving. That gets me every day. If you drive down the road and see an approaching 4WD piled high with boats, quad bikes and camping gear, you don’t have to wave. It’s only a tourist you’ll never see again, who wouldn’t wave back in a month of Sundays.

THE High Court decision on Wednesday, June 19, to dismiss an appeal from a Palm Island woman against her conviction for breaching Alcohol Management Plan (AMP) restrictions on the island has been met with mixed reactions. Queensland Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said the decision “confirmed the lawfulness of Queensland’s AMPs”. “The Queensland Government believed it had a strong case which the Queensland Court of Appeal had upheld twice previously.” A spokesperson for the Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Legal Service, which ran the appeal, said the decision was disappointing and that nearly 600 appeals against sly-grogging charges, put on hold while the challenge was heard in the High Court, would now need to be withdrawn. Yarrabah Mayor Errol Neal says the High Court’s decision is a setback for democracy and that alcohol issues should be managed locally. “There’s alcohol issues all around the world and the only remedy I see is to get our people and create more opportunities for our people and employment - it’s common sense really,” he said. Following the High Court ruling Member for Cook David Kempton said the Queensland Government would now get on with the process of working with communities to continue the review of AMPs in the Indigenous communities where they are in place.. “I would like to see more restrictions on the movement of alcohol into Indigenous communities. Allowing communities to control alcohol supply through local taverns would be a better way to deal with sly-grogging,” Mr Kempton said. “There seems to be no control about the flow, the volume, the quantity of alcohol, that’s going in to the region from whatever distribution point,” he said. “That’s where we need to get tough on the sly-groggers but we also make sure there’s some responsibility around the sale of alcohol from outlets into the region. “I would much rather see it sold and consumed in the community where it’s controlled.”
important regional centres,” Mr Kempton said. “The feedback I have received about air services on this route identify issues with pricing, service timing and poor connections to other services. “By deregulating services on the route, we may see more competition from other carriers which could help to deliver lower fares for Weipa residents, fly-in flyout workers and tourists. “I am also pleased to hear a number of other airlines have already expressed interest in this particular route.” Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson said in May he considers Virgin’s regional play as “one of the final pieces in the jigsaw puzzle for competing with Qantas.” However, Branson admitted that “even if some (regional) routes don’t make money, they can still be an essential part of an airline and its network.” QantasLink was unable to provide a statement to the Western Cape Bulletin prior to printing.

Deregulation brings competition to WeipaCairns air route from page 1 The deregulation of the Cairns to Weipa service followed feedback received through a five-week review of all long-distance services conducted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Out of all the air services reviewed the Cairns to Weipa route received the most feedback with 585 individual submissions received. “Passengers, as well as local councils and industry partners provided input and detailed submissions into the review,” Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said following the deregulation announcement at Cairns airport on Tuesday, June 24. “The route will become fully deregulated by the end of 2014 which will allow other operators to start planning” Member for Cook David Kempton said this announcement is great news for the region. “Currently, there are 17 regulated return services each week between the two

NEWS
BE VIGILANT:
Weipa break and enter spree WEIPA Police are asking people to be vigilant protecting their homes and property following a recent spate of break-ins. Officer in Charge of Weipa Police Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins told the Western Cape Bulletin on Monday, June 24 there were some active break and enter offenders working over the Rocky Point, Trunding, Golf Links and Nanum areas. “It’s the same modus operandi,” Snr Sergeant Jenkins said. “They are whistling to see where
the dogs are and trying door handles on cars along the way.” Locals leaving property insecure makes for easy work for the offenders. “We have asked locals time and time again to secure their property, and doublecheck they have locked their homes and cars, otherwise these offenders will continue to thrive from easy pickings. “I would also encourage locals to consider using steering wheel braces in their cars as these items add to
another level of security to your car – as long as you lock away the keys!” Snr Sergeant Jenkins said Police in Weipa work long hours and were very much aware that houses and vehicles in all suburbs are being targeted. “Please take some responsibility to secure your property and immediately report suspicious activity to Weipa Police station (4090 6000); Police Link (131 444) to report a non-urgent crime and always 000 in an emergency.”
Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility Of the 76 vehicle break-ins reported for June in Cairns and the wider area (which includes Weipa), 80 per cent of the vehicles were left unlocked or with valuables in full view of offenders. Opportunistic thieves walking past can see what you have in your vehicle. Even if you know it is just an empty backpack without any valuables, remove it from sight. If it needs to stay in the vehicle, put it out of sight in the boot. Police resources continue to be tied up investigating these thefts and while Police are prosecuting offenders, members of our community need to take responsibility and play their part in crime prevention. Lock and secure your vehicle and remove valuables from sight and make it harder for the criminals.
The following tips will help reduce the risk of vehicle and property theft from your vehicle: • If you have off-street parking, use it. If possible, park behind locked gates or in a locked garage. Parking on the street greatly increases the risk of theft. • Remove temptation – always lock doors and close windows when your vehicle is unattended. • If you must leave valuables in your motor vehicle keep them out of sight. • Remove keys from the ignition if your vehicle
is parked or unattended – even if only for a minute. • Don’t hide spare car keys in or on the vehicle as theives know where to look • Take your vehicle keys with you if you are going out, even if you are leaving your vehicle at home. • Keys should not be marked with personal or vehicle details – use your personal property identification code • Don’t leave vehicle keys lying around on tables, benches, beside tables or key hooks at home – keep them out of sight • When parking in a garage, ensure both the garage and the vehicle are locked and the garage door remotes are secured. • Use lockable devices such as lockable fuel caps, wheel nuts, spare tyre covers and roof racks. • Secure your vehicle registration plates with one way screws. • Consider using the following to help protect your vehicle – car alarm, ignition shield, steering wheel lock, window etching, microdots, GPS tracker or immobiliser. • For older vehicles install an engine immobiliser that meets Australian Standard 4601:1999 provides the most effective deterrent to opportunistic vehicle theft. • However, it offers no protection if a thief has easy access to your car keys.

PICturEd above is Warren rolston a local, outstanding snake catcher and clearly a competent tree climber. On Sunday night at around 8pm Weipa Police were called to a large snake blocking the road across Evans Landing near the boat ramp. Without getting out of the Police vehicle, local Police were experienced enough to quickly consider this job way out of their league and employed the services of Warren and his daughter Haley to assist. Obviously the snake was well aware of Warren and Haley’s capabilities and decided to make a quick slide for it, up one of the nearby trees, only to be caught, wrestled and safely removed from the tree without injury, for later transport to a safe place. Weipa Police would like to say thank you and well done Warren and Haley for the great job you both do.

Thank you Weipa Hospital My father-in-law Roger Phillips, visiting from Cairns, needed to spend the night in the hospital last Saturday and he wants to let everyone know that the treatment, and the professional attitude of the people in the hospital, was as good as he has ever seen anywhere else. High Court decision sets a dangerous precedent I AM dismayed at the High Court decision regarding the appeal against Alcohol Management Plans (AMPs) on Palm Island and believe it sets a poor and dangerous precedent for law making in Australia. I do however hold hope in the Queensland Government’s decision to review AMPs which I believe are not effective. I understand the arguments for special laws, however those laws should remain intact based only on the outcomes and also effectiveness of their supposed purpose. With the issues of sly-grogging/ smuggling, bootlegging and continued alcohol fuelled violence and social issues, the AMPs have not been a success and that either doing away with these laws, or at the very least making amendments to the approach towards alcohol and alcohol-related social issues, is necessary. The High Court’s decision states that the AMPs are not discriminatory laws, however the power still lies with the Government to continue or discontinue such particular legislation and legislative approach to alcohol. Because of the precedent that the High Court’s decision may have set, it may become refuge justification for separatist and apartheid law making of the future, on the argument that “special measures” and laws are “not discriminatory”. The last time words such as “protection” and “special” were used to defend separate laws for separate people (based either of heritage or location) was in the times of the Stolen Generation and the shameful Aboriginal Protection Act era in Queensland.
Jack Wilkie-Jans.
The same issues regarding substance abuse and misuse are everywhere, even suburbia, so the approach should be across the board. The term “special” relating to laws must be scrutinised in definition otherwise we may see continued and possibly more drastic modern apartheid. I urge the Queensland Government to be brave and make changes to or remove AMP laws on the grounds of their ineffectiveness due to lack of other measures to tackle substance abuse and misuse in Aboriginal Communities. Jack Wilkie-Jans, Traditional Owner (Cape York) A&TSI Affairs Advocate, Cairns
Lock-up and take precautions WeIPA Real estate would like to warn residents to lock their doors after a spate of recent home invasions. As most of us are aware many break and enter offences occur during the holiday season, which is now upon us, this is a reminder to always lock-up and take precautions. There have been several reported break-ins in the past week and most have occurred at night while residents are sleeping. We urge residents to report any suspicious behaviour to Police and also encourage the public to take certain precautions. Below is a brief check list: • Home security starts at your front door. Many burglaries occur because people fail to lock them before leaving the house even for a short period or going to bed. • If your home has a security screen door installed, keep it locked. • A number of burglars enter homes through the garage. If there is access from the garage, ensure this door is locked • When leaving the house ensure you; Check that everything is locked and secured before leaving. • Lock ALL windows, doors, garden shed, gates, garages and any other areas of your home that are able to be secured.
• Windows leading into the garage also need to be locked. • If window locks are key operated, do not leave the keys in the locks. • If you have sensor lights installed, use them; Criminals don’t like to be seen. Turn on lighting over entry ways, along your driveway and the back of the house, revealing any possible hiding places for thieves. • Ensure you keep a detailed inventory of all valuable property. A copy of these details should be stored in a safe place at another address – perhaps with a relative or friend, or at your work address. It is also a wise idea to include photographs of your belongings which can help identify your valuables if they are stolen. • If you are going away ask a friend or neighbour to park in your driveway. • Ask trusted friends or neighbours to check on your home occasionally while you are away; advise them of where you can be contacted. • Make sure that the lawn does not become overgrown. • Do not hide keys anywhere outside your home because thieves look in all these places to gain easy access. • Do not leave large amounts of cash inside your home. • Do not leave cars unlocked in the driveway. • Do not leave your house unlocked. • Ensure you have contents insurance and review your policy regularly - particularly following a major purchase • Do you know your neighbours well? Communication with neighbours builds a safer community and allows more people to watch over your home. Anyone with information about the home invasions is encouraged to contact the Weipa Police (07) 4069 6000. Melisa Adams Weipa Real Estate

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.
When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. THERE will be no racing around to find a toilet or somewhere to have a shower this year at the Laura thoroughbred meeting, as the Laura Amateur Turf Club has just put the finishing touches on a new ablution block. The $60,000 project, fully funded by the club, has delivered seven new toilets and four showers including an ensuite-style handicap-friendly cubicle. The concrete block ablution facility, fired by a gas water heater and wired into the course’s electric grid, is a significant addition to the facilities offered to racegoers planning to attend the June 28 horse sports and the June 29 races. The club prides itself on its bush camping grounds with the new facility adding to the charm of its other ensuite, donga-style facilities and the traditional “donkey-fired” wood-heated showers. The new block is situated roughly halfway between the racing facilities and the rodeo grounds to allow campers more room to spread out and still have facilities nearby. “We’ve also refurbished some of the other toilets and showers, so this new block just

ACTING Chief Health Officer Dr Stephen Lambert has called for calm and patience as Legionella test results from more than 300 hospitals statewide are being completed, analysed and collated. “The handful of positive test results revealed to media over the weekend did not pose a risk to human health and the infected sites or source of infection are easily treated,” Dr Lambert said. “We will release finalised test results for all hospitals that have completed testing to date on Friday, June 28. “We should not be speculating on interim low-level positive results until we know the full and final picture for each facility. “Final results and treatment plans for any hospital which has returned a positive reading to date will be publicly available in our first weekly report on Friday.” It is important to remember that Legionella is always present in the environment and often found in very low concentrations in water supplies. No further announcements are planned until Friday unless a hospital acquired case of Legionella is reported or an infection posing a considerable risk to patient safety is detected.

Laura went it alone, funding its own races, until its efforts were recognised by the state’s racing authorities and prizemoney was reinstated in recent years. “There have been a lot of people, putting in a lot of time and effort to keep the race meeting and keep it moving forward,” Williams said. “It is so vital to the district to have this once-a-year event retained with the horse sports
on Friday, the races on Saturday and the rodeo on Sunday. “We only charge a nominal camping fee for our familyfriendly grounds and the chance to be involved in some traditional horse sports and racing. “We expect even more trainers will nominate horses for this meeting this year to make it an even bigger event and a significant event on the thoroughbred calendar. “Laura is an important component of the Far North racing circuit and we are proud to be continually improving our facilities for racegoers, trainers, horses and jockeys to keep it as a signature event every year.”

Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education graduates at the June 20 ceremony.
COEN students Jennifer Creek and Sandra Peter were among Indigenous students from 90 communities across the Northern Territory and other states to receive awards at a Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education graduation ceremony held on Thursday, June 20. The 277 awards include Certificates I to IV, Diploma, Advance Diploma, Bachelor Degree and Graduate Diploma qualifications. The ceremony began at 2 pm with an academic procession of lecturers and graduating students led by the popular One Mob dancers. Kungarakan Traditional Owner, Helen Bishop and Barbara Taylor gave the Welcome to Country address and Ernie Dingo was the keynote speaker. Batchelor Institute director, Adrian Mitchell said the Batchelor campus graduation was always a very special event.
“It is a day that we get to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students, many of whom have had to overcome numerous challenges during their learning journey. “Their success is testimony to their dedication, persistence, skills and abilities. “I am very confident that the qualifications they have received are industry relevant and will position them to achieve their employment aspirations and to make a substantial contribution to their community as a professional, a leader and a role model for future generations,” Mr Mitchell said. The graduation was witnessed by students, local residents, organisations and people from many communities and the ceremony was broadcast live by Batchelor Institute Indigenous Media Unit Radio, Rum Jungle.
NAIDOC Deadlys Ball tickets selling fast WHAT does 85kg of fish and 300kg of chips have in common? That’s the total amount of fish and chips the Western Cape NAIDOC Planning Committee sold at the Weipa Fishing Classic. Their fish and chip stall is just one of their many fundraisers, leading up to this year’s Western Cape NAIDOC celebrations. As a part of this year ’s celebrations, the committee is planning their inaugural Western Cape NAIDOC Deadlys Ball, to be held under the stars on Saturday, July 13 at the Western Cape Cultural Centre. Tickets are $100 each and selling fast. Only 200 tickets will be sold – no ticket sales on the night and no refunds. Guests will enjoy an evening hosted by comedian and Indigenous ambassador, Sean Choolburra, live music by Soul Jah, a cultural performance, three-course meal and a fireworks display under the stars. Importation of ‘synthetic drugs’ to be banned THE Federal Government will develop legislation to ban the importation of unauthorised psychoactive substances or ‘synthetic drugs’. The legislation will implement a “reverse onus of proof” scheme. At the moment, synthetic drugs need to be prescribed in legislation to be illegal. If they are not prescribed their importation, sale and manufacture is not prohibited. A reversal of the onus of proof will flip this assumption – it will mean that new drugs coming onto the market
WATER WISE TIPS
are presumed to be illegal until the authorities know what they are and clear them as safe and legal. There are a range of synthetic drugs being sold, including through the internet, that mimic the effects of illegal drugs like cannabis, cocaine and methamphetamine. New synthetic drugs, such as synthetic cannabis, are being marketed to the community as a legal alternative to illicit drugs. A reverse onus of proof in relation to new synthetic drugs is operating in Ireland and is due to begin in New Zealand
on August 1, 2013. The Federal Government will work with the states and territories to develop corresponding legislation for a reverse onus of proof for the sale, manufacture or advertising of these substances across Australia. A co-ordinated national approach to banning the sale, manufacture and advertising of these drugs is vital so that manufacturers are not able to exploit legislative inconsistencies between each state and territory. A national drug monitoring system will be established to
collect and disseminate information on synthetic drugs. This will include the development of a new drug monitoring and information sharing database that makes use of existing intelligence sharing networks and information sources from around Australia and internationally. The database will be administered by the Australian Federal Police and will provide a secure source of information regarding synthetic drugs including their chemical profiles, street names, potential harms, sources, supply channels and distribution methods.

The Brown tree Snake is one of the more common snakes in the Weipa area, although not often seen because of its nocturnal habits. It is also known as the ‘Night Tiger’ because of the stripes on the side of the body – and the ‘Doll’s Eye’ because of its characteristic large eyes. These big eyes are a great aid for hunting at night, and Night Tigers also use chemical cues to search out their prey of small birds, reptiles and mammals. A very slender reptile and an able tree climber, this snake can reach up to two metres in length, with females laying four to 12 eggs in tree hollows or rocky crevices. They occur across coastal and subcoastal northern and eastern Australia, as well as in New Guinea and many adjacent islands. Unfortunately Brown tree Snakes were accidentally introduced into the South Pacific Island of Guam where they have wreaked havoc on the local

wildlife, in the same manner as Cane Toads have done here. This snake defends itself by rearing back in a classic S-shaped posture (pictured above), and will strike repeatedly if approached too closely. It is weakly venomous, however unlike most other Australian snakes, the fangs of the Night Tiger are at the rear of the mouth (rear-fanged) thus making it difficult to inject venom into people. They are not regarded as dangerous, nevertheless medical attention should be sought in the event of a child being bitten, or when any adverse reaction occurs. A compression bandage should be applied in the standard manner for snake bite if there be any concern. Bites from this species are rare however, as they give fair warning to stay away. Like all native snakes, Doll’s Eyes play a crucial role in keeping our ecosystems balanced and healthy.

criminals crucified alongside Jesus joined in with the crowd’s insults, however at some stage one of them must have changed his mind, because of a new insight he must have had of the innocence of Jesus. Luke wrote the following version of events in Ch 23 vs 39-43. “One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” The other one, however, rebuked him
saying, “ Don’t you fear God? You received the same sentence he did. Ours, however, is right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did: but he has done no wrong.” And he said to Jesus, “Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!” Jesus said to him, “I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me.” How gracious is our God! Edmund Kennedy EDMUND Kennedy was one of the more important and well-known of the explorers who, through their endeavours, added understanding and knowledge of the Cape York area, although his most famous expedition was to end tragically. Kennedy undertook a number of important exploratory expeditions during his career but it was to be his third journey, and fatefully last expedition which covered the Cape York region. Kennedy’s reason for undertaking this expedition was that he had been commissioned by the colonial government to travel north from Sydney in order to find a suitable overland route from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Sailing from Sydney in April 1848, Kennedy led his party overland from Rockingham Bay, near present day Cardwell to Port Albany near the tip of Cape York Peninsula. However, from the outset, his expedition met with difficulties, including the rugged terrain and on-going shortages of provisions. Kennedy split his group near Weymouth Bay, taking a smaller group of four,
including an Aboriginal man named Jackey Jackey, to rush forward to link up with the supply vessel at a pre-arranged meeting place. O n t h e w a y, n e a r Shelburne Bay, one of the group accidentally shot himself and Kennedy left two of the group behind to care for him. This left Kennedy and his friend Jackey Jackey to continue onward, with further tragedy waiting in the swampy surrounds of the Escape River. It was here that Kennedy lost his life during a violent conflict with the local Aboriginal people. Jacky Jacky continued, finally linking up with the supply ship Ariel. In the ensuing search and rescue mission by the Ariel, no survivors were found at the Shelburne Bay camp where Kennedy had left nine members of his expedition and only two at the Weymouth Bay camp. Later, some of Kennedy’s papers were found where Jacky Jacky had cached them, but his remains were never found. The photograph below shows the memorial to Kennedy’s ill fated expedition, erected near Tam O’Shanter Point.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas TWO huge upsets make the headlines in this, the last of the three split rounds! High fliers Geelong were pipped after the siren by the Lions at the Gabba. Trailing by over 50 late in the third quarter, the Lions ran wild, kicking 8 goals in the last quarter to win after the siren from the boot of Ash McGrath. This is definitely one of the upsets of the year and was reported as the 8th greatest comeback in AFL/VFL history. One can only hope that it goes to the Lion’s heads and they get flogged by the Suns in two weeks time. The other upset was in Adelaide where Port also came from behind to defeat the Swans. After dropping a stack of matches against the top sides, Port looked to be all but out of top eight contention until this unexpected effort. In other more predictable games, the Hawks accounted for the Eagles in a high scoring game, while St Kilda knocked off the Demons. Richmond have cemented themselves well in the eight with a strong team effort over the Bulldogs. Freo continued to add to North’s woes with a typical low scoring defensive victory in the West. It will be hard to see the Kangas dig themselves out of the hole they are in now. Round 14 finally has a full round of games again. West Coast and Essendon should put on a great show, as should Sydney and Carlton. Port will have confidence heading into their clash with the Pies and Fremantle and Geelong will be an interesting tussle between defensive and attacking outfits. Cellar Dwellers the Demons and Bulldogs will be keen to notch up another victory in their battle while the Hawks will have to watch out for a Lions side brimming with confidence after their Gabba miracle last weekend. North Melbourne need a victory over GWS and Richmond should continue to dominate over the Saints. Finally, Gaz and the Suns are at home on the Coast to the Crows. I’m down that way for a few days and am excited to be heading to my first Sun’s home game at Metricon Stadium. Being my first winter south of Cairns in 4 years I should be easily spotted on TV in a polar suit while everyone else has thongs, singlets and boardies on. My Tips – West Coast, Sydney, Gold Coast, Collingwood, Geelong, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Richmond. That’s the wrap! Go the Suns! Dallas

TOP 10 TIPPERS
A SERIES of off-field incidents surfaced throughout the week, leaving some players with lengthy suspensions and fines. As round 15 was leading into the week of the second State Of Origin, only four matches were played over the weekend. On Friday the Roosters held out the Bulldogs by two points in an entertaining encounter. Then on Saturday the Tigers pulled an upset with a win over the Raiders, and on Sunday the Rabbitohs put the Eels to the sword with a dominating display. On Monday the Titans were too strong for the Storm. State of Origin two is on this Wednesday with the Maroons looking for a win at home, then Round 15 kicks- off on Friday with the Rabbitohs taking on the Raiders. Then on Saturday two games will be played, with the Tigers playing the Storm and the Panthers versus the Dragons. Super Sunday has three games being played, with the Knights taking on the Titans, the Warriors battling it out against the Broncos, and the Cowboys looking for a win over the Sharks. Monday night’s game will be between the Roosters and the Sea Eagles. Both the Eels and the Bulldogs have a bye in Round 15. Karl’s Tips: Queensland, Rabbitohs, Storm, Panthers, Titans, Warriors, Cowboys, Roosters. Yours in footy, Karl

ASTUTE Northern United coach Dave Kennedy will rely on Weipa pair Garreth Smith and Tim Oberleuter to lead the way in Saturday’s (June 29) Outback Queensland clash in Cairns. Renowned tactician Kennedy also has plenty of faith in Kowanyama fullback Fitzroy Lawrence and fiveeight Stanley David for the game which will be played at Barlow Park as curtain-raiser to a Northern Pride Queensland
Intrust Super Cup match. Smith will pack down at front row whilst Oberleuter is the halfback. Kennedy was in Weipa last Saturday (June 22) with the Kowanyama side he coaches in the Cape Cluster competition. “Garreth didn’t play in the Cape Cluster so will be nice and fresh and he starred for Northern Cape at the RARL FNQ Challenge in Cairns after which our side was picked. He is a great forward and will be a key man.” Kennedy said.
“Tim lined up for Weipa Raiders on Saturday and went well in one game whilst Stanley and Fitzroy were brilliant.” The side will also include players from Palm Island Barracudas, Bowen and Three Rivers who contested the FNQ Challenge. Kennedy said the players would meet in Cairns on Thursday and train that night. “We will also have two sessions on Friday and a light run the day of the match. It is a bit of an unknown at this stage
so we will have to work out our combinations at training,” he said. Rampaging Weipa forward Reece McLaughlin has withdrawn from the side due to work and has been replaced by another enforcer in Palm Islander Raoul Miller. Asked what he knew about Outback Queensland the wily Kennedy said he had a spy watching games at Hughenden recently. The Bully will be at Saturday’s game.
Close games in first Cape Cluster round Alf Wilson story
SEVERAL close games were highlights of round one of the Cape Cluster rugby league competition held at Weipa’s Andoom Oval on Saturday, June 22. Two of the four matches resulted in six-point margins after quality and entertaining football. The most exciting was between reigning premiers Kowanyama and Weipa Raiders. Raiders led 6-nil at half-time before Kowanyama rebounded after the break to win 18-12. Such a fine defensive effort up until half-time would have pleased Raiders coach Karl Adams and it was paid due respect by his rival mentor David Kennedy. “Not many sides can hold Kowanyama scoreless in a half of football as we have many good attacking players,” Kennedy said. For Kowanyama Raymond Goggleye, Elron Lawrence and Ishmael Birchley scored tries and Stanley David booted three goals. Raiders’ try scorers were Tala Nona and Jack Sagigi whilst Chris Namok kicked the two goals. Raiders also figured in the other close
encounter when they beat Napranum Natives 24-18 after trailing 12-6 at half-time. Crafty halfback Tim Oberleuter was the magician behind the Raiders victory, scoring two tries and booting three goals for a personal tally of 14 points. Natives try scorers were blockbusting forward Morris Burke, evergreen team coach Jason Nixon and Jimmy Jackonia. Kareen Tabuai kicked two goals and Chastyn Bowen one. Napranum scored a 38-22 win over the Morgan Hobson-coached Lockhart River for whom Kura Asera was the star with two tries. Kowanyama scored the easiest win with their 58-10 hammering of Lockhart River and their halves Stanley David and Elron Lawrence shone. Five-eighth David scored three tries and kicked a goal for 14 points, whilst speedster Lawrence chipped in with a try and three conversions. Thomas Booth scored a fine try for Lockhart River and Kieran Johnston booted a goal. Referees who travelled to Weipa to officiate over the games were Cairns based Rod “Hairy” McCrae and QRL Northern Division Regional Co-ordinator David Maiden.
“There were some really good games up in Weipa for the first round of the Cluster Comp. Coen and Pormpuraaw couldn’t get to the first weekend and they will make up for that over the next four games,” Maiden said. “Lockhart River did really well to field a team as they were also competing at the Laura Dance Festival. It was unfortunate that the dates clashed – I thought I had found all the dates for all events on the Cape but somehow the dance festival didn’t show up anywhere,” he said. Maiden said that Weipa Raiders nearly pulled off a big upset by leading Kowanyama until five minutes remaining. “They will both feature prominently this season. Napranum Natives also had a really close game in their first match against Weipa and they will also be hard to beat when they have a full squad,” he said. Maiden has prepared a proposed draw for the remainder of the season. “As Aurukun is no longer competing, we have moved the final round to Coen on August 24. Also hoping to get NPA, Torres and Three Rivers up to Coen on the finals weekend and have a big weekend of footy,” he said.

It’s nearly party time . . . Thrills and spills for The container supplied by our major sponsors Sea Swift and Northline Transport left adelaide last Monday and is due in Cairns later this week in readiness to be placed on the barge for next week’s trip. That’s right . . . less than three weeks until the 2013 Queensland Dirt Kart Titles hit town. July 12 to 14 is when you will see the might of the Weipa dirt kart community take on the Southern dirt kart invasion. Nineteen drivers, including one current Australian champion, are making the trek to our wonderful part of the country, and with only one thing on their mind, becoming the first Queensland Dirt Kart Champion. Not unlike our interstate invaders, the Weipa racers want it more, and will look to stop those Queensland plates being taken out of the Cape and over the border. Our local hope and club president Westy is primed , ready and waiting and has already starting stirring up our visitors - just letting them know that they won’t have it all their own way when they come to our home track. He said that they will not have experienced an event like this in
Weipa motocrossers
the country and hopes they’re ready for it “Weipa-style.” For those that attended the Weipa Fishing Classic, you may have seen our static display, along with displays on the weekend down at the shopping centre and also at Mitre 10 - it’s all starting to get very exciting. We have a limited number of our official Queensland title shirts and stubby coolers on sale and they can be purchased at the track on the weekend or at one of our displays to be held over the
coming weeks. Weipa, we want to see you come out in droves to support our boys and girls when they take on the Southerners. We want you loud and proud to be from Weipa and to also be a proud Queenslander and go crazy when we win this thing. Anyway, look out for all the details on the program, costs, transport and who’s racing over the next couple of weeks. This is out of control! – Mowlesy
Weipa motocrossers once again hit the track this weekend with good numbers, despite plenty away due to school holidays. The junior lites guys led the way again as far as numbers were concerned. Alec Milevskiy, Matt Bolton and Liam Faull were out in front, while a few of the other guys continued to close the gap. Also well done to Alex Walters on his first ride out at the track. There were certainly some thrills and spills this weekend and as far as spills go Max Fleming’s took the cake. One lap he was flat out around the track and the next lap he put on a show with a spectacular crash. Thankfully, with a little wind knocked out of him, he jumped to his feet with minimal damage done. Great work once again from the junior lites guys. Sam Wilson and Morgan Walker enjoyed a track to themselves in the mini class. The boys made the most of the quiet day and somehow still managed to battle between themselves. This really is a fantastic class for young boys and girls wanting to
give motocross a try to start off in. Finally the seniors got their shot at ripping up the track, which proved more difficult than expected. With the track packing down hard and getting quite slick, it was evident Cooper would have some work on his hands trying to manhandle the 250 two-stroke around every lap. Aaron Darr made an appearance and the once Queensland State champ showed some of his former form, sticking right to Cooper and giving him someone to chase. Unfortunately for me that meant eating plenty of roost from the back of those two guys bikes. Well done also to Brian Penton for dusting off the riding gear and having a crack. It was good to see you out there cruising around. Thanks once again to all the coaches, parents, and track preppers who are doing a wonderful job of opening the track and getting people out there. The next ride wont be far away. Please call myself (0413 620 727) to find out how you can become involved in a great club. – Chas

staying with Peter Kerr from Berkly on the Weipa Houseboat the Tilley May, and said that they had a ball catching three different species of Trevally and a few Barra off the beach at Red Cliffs. They also caught Giant Herring, Tarpon, and big Queenfish. They tried to get out to the Twelve Mile but the big westerly swell kept them closer in, however they found all the Mackerel they wanted on the Three Mile. Shane landed three in the 10kg range on Gulp soft plastics and mono trace while fishing for bottom fish. The Gulp’s also accounted for Fingermark up to 3kg, a few Tuskers one of which was 5kg. The boys didn’t see any Trout but they had a great trip any way. ‘Til next week smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

from page 20 Dave Newman has been getting a few Barra and Fingermark for his clients who are escaping the winter chills from Victoria. Dave also told me about a very brave crocodile that swam right up to the boat looking for an easy feed. I fished in the Embley system on Saturday and Sunday for only a few small fish, with no legal fish caught. With the .3 metre low tide it was a good time for me to check out the area so I don’t run aground when the water is a little higher. There was a report from Dave Donald who had a group fishing up at Mapoon that even with the big seas managed to land some good fish, notably a double hook-up on Cobia, Fingermark in the 60cm mark and other reef fish. Shane from Tackle World spent three days down at Boyds Bay,
