By Giembra Busmer

SITTING elegantly in the Embley River the Super Yacht Twizzle has attracted a great deal of attention as locals and tourists have flocked to the Evans Landing jetty this week to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most luxurious sailing vessels. An unusual sight in Weipa for sure, but one that could become commonplace if plans for a marina were to come to fruition, according to Weipa Town Authority chairman, Peter McCulkin. “A world-class marina in Weipa would attract vessels such as Twizzle to our shores and what a boost to tourism and our local economy that would be,” Mr McCulkin said.  continued page 2 SY Twizzle berthed at Evans Landing, Weipa this week. A taste of luxury sails into Weipa  from page 1 S/Y Twizzle was on her way to New Caledonia to commence charter operations when she developed engine problems and sailed into Weipa to await parts. A crew member told the Western Cape Bulletin the vessel could remain here for up to three weeks. The epitome of sailing luxury S/Y Twizzle was built for British husband and wife owners by Burgess at the Royal Huisman Shipyard in Holland and delivered in 2010. The couple named the vessel “Twizzle” after their children’s favourite puppet characters. Constructed of aluminium the award-winning yacht is 57.5 metres (188.6ft) long and has a beam of 11.6 metres (38ft). Powered by one 1300hp Caterpillar motor S/Y Twizzle has a maximum speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 4000 nautical miles. One of the pioneering features of this magnificent yacht is a swing keel that allows for a shoal draft of just 3.8 metres, giving the vessel greater access to shallower harbours and marinas. In high winds the centreboard can be

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

There are times when working in the upper levels of government is very satisfying. If you are sitting at the table when decisions are made affecting the lives of every Queensland, when you are present as history is being made... well, that is something to tell your grandchildren about. On the other hand, there are the depressing times too, and you would not want your grandchildren to hear about those at all.

I have been working very hard recently, putting in eight hours day after day, sometimes as often as five in a row. That sort of thing is fine once in a while, if you are working in a team with important policies to implement, but do it too often and you become jaded. You start to fall prey to black thoughts about what you are doing, and who you are doing it for. I suppose the sort of people I work for are at the root of it. Aussies are an egalitarian bunch, with everyone as good as his neighbour, but elect them to Parliament and everything changes. You think you know John Normal in his tie and sharp suit when you elect him. I get to see him in his shirtsleeves, tie off and hair in a mess, becoming tired and emotional in the private bar and spouting the most fearful rubbish about the economy, Queensland Health, global warming, the Greens or whatever topic of the day demands an instant

You should hear them on the subject of cost cutting and firing people! They would give Ivan the Terrible a run for his money. Cut here, slash there, get rid of the useless mouths. These men are tough, except . . . They have stuck me with preparing a press release justifying the $57,000 a year salary increase for parliamentarians. How am I meant to do that? Nurses, teachers, police are getting the sack in the name of economy, and John Normal gets a huge present for doing nothing? I’m not a magician, you know. Positive Legionella finding at Weipa IHS low risk to patients and staff POSITIVE levels of Legionella bacteria have been recorded in two isolated areas at the Weipa Integrated Health Service (IHS). Cape York Hospital and Health Service chief executive Susan Turner said 22 samples had been taken from 11 sites at Weipa IHS, with three samples from two sites returning positive results for types of Legionella. Ms Turner said one positive result had been returned from the cleaner’s sink in the hospital morgue, while the other two positive results had been returned from a little used patient assisted shower area in the Day Surgery. “We don’t do a lot of day surgery at Weipa, so this shower is very infrequently used,’’ Ms Turner said. “The risk to patients and staff as a result of the presence of Legionella bacteria in these areas is regarded as extremely low.’’ She said none of the three positive Weipa results was for Legionella pneumophila, which was the form of Legionella most commonly associated with Legionnaires disease. “All three were of non-pneumophila strains of Legionella,’’ she said. Ms Turner said both the areas affected had been cordoned off as soon as the results had been received this week. “We had hoped to clean the affected areas on Wednesday but found we needed some additional parts for the hot water system that would allow us to flush the water pipes in both areas with very hot water,’’ she said. “Those parts are now on their way and we hope to be able to do the cleaning on Wednesday, July 10. Until then, the areas will remain closed off.

“After the affected areas have been cleaned and disinfected, we will then retest them to ensure the Legionella has been fully cleared before reopening them.’’

Cape York Hospital and Health Service chief executive Susan Turner.

Ms Turner said the Cooktown Multi-Purpose Health Service (MPHS) and the Weipa IHS both had been tested in response to the directive from the Department of Health for all public hospitals to test for Legionella. “Weipa and Cooktown are our only hospitals and the only ones with inpatients that have to be showered,’’ she said. Ms Turner said primary health centres and clinics were

not being tested as they were not included in the directive from the Department of Health and were regarded as very low-risk as they did not have inpatients or inpatient showering facilities. “It is important to remember that Legionella bacteria, of whatever type, always are present in the environment and are often found in very low concentrations in water supplies,’’ she said. “The organisms may exist in the plumbing of your home where they do no harm because you are not vulnerable in the same way as a sick patient in hospital. “In vulnerable patients, some types of Legionella in particular, such as pneumophila, can cause pneumonia. “But it’s also important to remember that Legionnaires disease is not spread from person to person. “The disease is spread by breathing in tiny droplets of airborne moisture that contain the Legionella bacteria, which is why the risk may be higher if it is present in showering facilities, where there may be a lot of airborne moisture, than in other areas.’’ Legionella bacteria of

any type are detectable, and therefore become reportable as positive, when they occur at the rate of 10 colony forming units (cfu) per millilitre or above. Below that level, they are not generally detectable. Ms Turner said if no positive sample results were returned, a clinical response was not required. There are many types of legionella bacteria but two main types that can cause illness in humans – Legionella pneumophila and Legionella longbeachae. Legionella pneumophila is the bacterium that can cause what the public commonly knows as Legionnaires disease. This is the form of Legionella that can occur in air-conditioning systems, water cooling towers, hot water systems, etc. Legionella longbeachae is a separate type of Legionella bacterium that is most commonly associated with potting mixes and garden soil – but also may be detected in water supply systems.

Operation Catalyst: targeting road safety in Cape York

Officers on patrol as part of Operation Catalyst in the Far North, performed traffic duties on the Peninsula Development Road.

Police from lockhart River, Weipa, Aurukun, cairns Tactical crime, cairns Traffic Branch and the Road Drug Testing Unit combined resources recently for operation catalyst, targeting life-endangering offences on the Peninsula Development Road in an effort to reduce traffic crashes and road fatalities in the area. A team of nine officers performed traffic duties on the Peninsula Development Road, north of Archer River for a period of 48 hours targeting the fatal five. Officers conducted a total of 803 roadside breath tests and 27 roadside drug tests and issued a total of 14 traffic infringement notices which included 11 for excessive speed. Police charged 10 people with a total of 12 charges for offences including possess dangerous drugs, possess utensils, fail to dispose of syringe, alcohol management offences, unlicenced driving, unregistered vehicle and drink driving with the highest drink drive reading being 0.149%. The officers also seized a variety of other items including one air rifle, cannabis, methamphetamines, drug utensils, 13 cartons of beer, three bottles of spirits and three casks of wine. All motorists travelling in far northern areas of Queensland are encouraged to research the area as many locations throughout Cape York have alcohol restrictions in place. These restrictions either ban or limit the amount and type of alcohol you can take into a community. Motorists travelling in the far north need to be familiar with the capabilities of their vehicles when travelling on unsealed dusty roads. Motorists need to turn headlights on, slow down and drive to the conditions when visibility is poor. You should consider stopping if you can’t see the road in front of you. Police recommend motorists slow down on roads such as the Peninsula Development Road For more information about driving in remote areas go to: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Driver-guide/Driving-safely/Driving-in-the-outback. aspx For more information about the alcohol restrictions go to: http://www.datsima.qld.gov.au/ atsis/everybodys-business/alcohol-restrictions-fortravellers

Cook supports Aurukun Shire in bid to reverse job provider decision

SUPPORT: Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott. Photo: Gary Hutchison.

Cook Shire Council has thrown its full support behind Aurukun Shire Council, in the fight to overturn a recent Federal Government decision to remove existing employment providers My Pathway from Aurukun and JobFind from Coen, replacing them with Noel Pearson’s, Cape York Institute (CYI). Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott and Aurukun Shire Mayor Dereck Walpo are extremely dissatisfied in the decision and are adamant that My Pathway and JobFind are the

most appropriate agencies to deliver employment services to the Coen and Aurukun communities. An excellent working relationship had been established with JobFind and My Pathway, seeing many Coen and Aurukun residents in steady employment, rather than “training for training’s sake” as Aurukun Mayor Walpo described the prior situation. My Pathway has a proven structure to deliver maximum services on the ground of these predominantly Indigenous communities.

After a recent Remote Jobs and Communities Program (RJCP) meeting in Coen, Mayor Scott reported a majority rejection of the appointment of CYI. The existing provider, JobFind, had delivered excellent results in training and employment growth over many years and is a trusted organisation in Coen. “A resounding theme at the meeting was that Cape York Institute is seen as only a policy and strategy body with no practical experience in job provider services, creating unnecessary middle-management,”. Mayor Scott said . “The economies of scale and network capabilities of existing providers across the Cape are obvious.” “I urge the Federal Government to reconsider this blatantly uninformed decision which will be a backwards step for job placement and industry growth in the Coen and Aurukun communities”. Cook Shire Council has formally begun lobbying the Federal Government requesting that JobFind be reinstated as the job services provider for Coen.

We’re opening the doors to innovation for improved services across our hospitals.

Every day, thousands of committed staff walk through the doors of our local hospitals to help. To invest in them, and the equipment they need to perform, we’re opening the doors to businesses and community organisations who can help out too. Just like we’ve done for years with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Blue Care. These partnerships are designed to deliver better health services, with no existing public hospital to be privatised. It means we can invest more in our workforce and the great job they do every day, because every Queenslander deserves a better state of health. Keys to new Napranum houses handed over MORE than 150 remote indigenous houses have been built in Queensland over the past 12 months under the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing (NPARIH) including houses in the Aurukun and Napranum communities. Queensland Housing and Public Works Minister Tim Mander toured the new houses in Napranum and Aurukun last week and said the new homes would boost the standard of housing in remote communities. “The lack of suitable accommodation in remote communities means too many people are forced to endure substandard or overcrowded conditions,” Mr Mander said. In addition to the five houses built in Napranum by MiHaven, in conjunction with the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, in the last six months the Department of Housing and Public Works contracted FK Gardener to deliver a further 15 homes to the community. FK Gardener sub-contracted the delivery of the homes to Remote Buildings Solutions (RBS) and as of June 2013 RBS has completed 14 houses. Napranum Aboriginal Shire

Delay for Weipa Catholic primary school The new Catholic primary school in Weipa will be delayed by 12 months with an opening now not expected until at least 2016. Catholic Education Services Executive Director Br Paul Hough said delays in securing government accreditation and development approval from the Weipa Town Authority meant the school was ineligible for consideration in the capital funding round this year.

“We have every reason to believe the school will be accredited and that we will receive development approval from the Weipa Town Authority,” he said. “But in the end we weren’t able to secure these approvals by this year’s capital deadline. Br Paul said such processes were inherently lengthy and involved. “In no way does the delay reflect the best efforts of the Non State Schools Accreditation

Board, the Queensland Government, Rio Tinto or the Weipa Town Authority, all of which have been, and continue to be, supportive.” He said the planning so far, and the evident strong community support, put the Weipa Catholic school in a strong position for funding next year. There was also a further opportunity to refine the school’s design and masterplan. Br Paul said that while the current plan was to open as a Prep to

Year 3 and then build another year level each year over the following three years, there might now be an opportunity to consider opening as a Prep to Year 6 with some composite classes in 2016. “I can assure the Weipa community that, from my recent discussions with Bishop James Foley and our Board of Governance that we remain absolutely committed to establishing a Catholic primary school in Weipa,” he said.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Locations that start from July 2013 Barwon region of Victoria ...................................People aged 0-64 Hunter region of NSW ............................................People aged 0-64 South Australia ......................................................... Event organiser, Ken Godfrey said the inaugural bush carnival was a huge success and hosts Wendy and Vince were already planning next year’s event. Visitors from around the world joined with local children and adults of all ages to enjoy “good old fashioned fun” and live entertainment

by Cairns band “Now or Never” all weekend. A tag-along 4WD adventure through the station proved popular with plenty of action and spectacular views for the participants. Apple bobbing, egg throwing, egg and spoon races and a talent quest kept everyone entertained on Friday and Saturday, while cattle scruffing and poddycalf riding rounded out the action on Sunday morning.  more photos p 18 & 19

Good old-fashioned family fun was the order of the day at the Bramwell Bush Carnival.

Meanwhile, at Cape York on Mars . . . DID you know there was a “Cape York” on Mars? N A S A’ s M a r s Exploration Rover Opportunity has less than half a mile (800 metres) to go to finish a two kilometre dash from “Cape York” on the rim Endeavour Crater to “Solander Point”, where it will spend the upcoming Martian winter. Opportunity was launched from Florida on July 8, 2003 and landed on Mars in January 2004. The rover completed its three-month primary mission in April 2004 and has continued operations in bonus extended missions. Opportunity’s

total driving distance has now exceeded 37 kilometres. Opportunity left the southern tip of Cape York, on the western rim of Endeavour Crater, six weeks ago and headed south. It is currently crossing a flatter area called Botany Bay which separates Cape York from Solander Point, both of which offer access to older geological deposits than the rover visited during its first seven years on Mars. Researchers hope to find evidence about different stages in the history of ancient Martian environments.

Palmer River goldfield FRED Warner, a surveyor on the Hann Expedition to Cape York is largely recognised as the discoverer of gold that led to the Palmer River gold rush. On this expedition, William Hann had offered a half a pound of tobacco to whoever it was first found gold and this was to be Fred Warner, at a spot later to be called Warner’s Gully, on the Palmer River, a tributary of the Mitchell River. Large numbers of miners soon moved in from the more settled areas, travelling by ship and then overland from places such as Georgetown, or the new settlement at Cooktown. It was initially a very rich alluvial field with around a million ounces of gold being recovered in the first five years of the field’s existence. But such rich yields were not to last and the post alluvial period of deep mining was nowhere near as productive, with large quantities of ore having to be crushed to recover small amounts of gold.

As a consequence of the more easily recovered alluvial gold being depleted, many of the miners moved upstream seeking more easily recovered gold. As these miners took up residence elsewhere, settlements such as Edwardstown, later to become Maytown, Byerstown, German Bar and Revolver Point were to spring up, only to later go into decline. Maytown was to become one of the more permanent settlements, becoming the unofficial “capital” of the Palmer River field. A wide range of businesses and services were eventually established, however Maytown would also eventually go into decline, as the gold became more difficult to find. The early miners, regardless of the fields to which they travelled in pursuit of gold, faced a range of obstacles, including harsh climatic conditions, high costs of living and difficulties in transporting food, equipment

and other necessities through the area. Tropical diseases were also a constant threat and many miners died as a result. The photograph above shows some of the mining infrastruc-

Northern Quolls found on Weipa mining lease Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa has commenced a series of ecological surveys after identifying a population of Northern Quolls in a remote area of its lease north of the Embley River. The Commonwealth Government lists the Northern Quoll species as “endangered”. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Gareth Manderson said there is currently no mining-related activity in the area in which the Northern Quolls were found. Mr Manderson said that, following the discovery, Weipa is engaging independent experts to help find out more about the population density and location of the species. “Over the next few weeks, our environmental specialists will work with the experts to conduct field surveys both inside and outside our lease boundary,” Mr Manderson said.

“The surveys will help ensure appropriate environmental management measures are developed.” The native species, which once was common across northern Australia, has declined following the spread of cane toads across its habitat. The Northern Quolls were identified during regular Rio Tinto Alcan surveys that are conducted across the mining lease. To date, 24 Northern Quolls have been identified in an area of about 3,500ha. “Respect for the environment is central to the way we operate, and our mining operations and the Cape’s flora and fauna have co-existed for nearly 50 years,” Mr Manderson said. “While it is still very early in terms of collecting all the data we need, we are committed to playing our part in supporting the Northern Quoll species.”

THE northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus), also known as the northern native cat, is often stated to be the most distinctive Australian quoll. It was first described in 1842 by naturalist and author John Gould. The northern quoll is the smallest of the four Australian quoll species. Females are smaller than males with adult females weighing between 350-690g and adult males 540-1120g. Northern quolls feed primarily on invertebrates, but also consume fleshy fruit, and a wide range of vertebrates including small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes and frogs. In the wild, males live for about one year, while the maximum recorded for a wild female was about three years of age.

We l l i t i s t i m e f o r Grandma (Heather) and myself to hang up our pens and pass the Bully on to new owners. What started back in 1999 when we purchased it from Comalco was meant to last at best twelve months, but the equipment kept working. Since giving up printing it ourselves Fridays have never been the same. We b o t h r e c a l l t h e phone calls and visitors dropping into the office if the paper was thirty minutes late offering any help, it was not our paper, it was yours we were only custodians of it. We thank you one and all. Things did not change when the equipment finally gave into old age and we outsourced the printing. There are by far to many people to name in a thank you, so thank you very much Weipa and the Western Cape. Heather and I are staying in Weipa to retire and enjoy all that the area has to offer. I did mention that we purchased the Bully back in 1999, but for a few years before that I worked for the Bully, and must say a special thank you to Jocelyn and Debbie, without your support in the last few months of Comalco ownership we would not be here now, also thank you Debbie again, you stayed with us and got us through that first year. So it’s goodbye from me, and goodbye from Heather.

SITTING elegantly in the Embley River the Super Yacht Twizzle has attracted a great deal of attention as locals and tourists have flocked to the Evans Landing jetty week to catch a glimpse this of one of the world’s most luxurious sailing vessels. An unusual sight in Weipa for sure, but one that could become commonpla ce if plans for a marina were to come to fruition, according to Weipa Town Authority chairman, Peter McCulkin. “A world-clas s marina in Weipa would attract vessels such as Twizzle to our shores and what a boost to tourism and our local economy that would be,” Mr McCulkin said.

2013 QUEENSLAND DIRT KART TITLES

A.I.D.K.A.

Australian Independent Dirt Kart Association Inc. www.aidka.com.au

12th – 14th July 2013

It’s time to hit the track I WASN’T around when the pioneers of the Weipa Dirt Kart Club floated the idea of running a Queensland championship, but what started as what many would have thought of as a pipe dream will this Friday night fire into life. It’s been 12-months in the planning. The countless hours of work and toil by a small band of fanatics will provide the results of their hard labour when the 2013 Queensland dirt kart title fires into life at the Weipa speedway. Make no mistake, most people involved in some sort of community event in this town know how hard it is to make anything get off the ground, but bringing our competitors from interstate is what makes this event even more unique than any other event held in town. Eleven interstate drivers with 19 dirt karts, they are here with one intention – to win. The inaugural Queensland Dirt Kart Title holds significant value to these drivers and they want to clean up. It was two years ago when current Australian 125cc champion,

Ben Brown from BRK Karts in Adelaide came to Weipa and lapped the entire field twice in a 10-lap race. We were slow, inexperienced and in poor quality equipment just going out to the track on Saturday night with no real purpose. The day that Ben came here, something changed in the Weipa Dirt Kart Club. We didn’t want to be thought of as a bunch of country hicks any more. We wanted to be professional, fast and able to mix it with these top class racers. This will be a goliath effort from the 26 Weipa racers but this time we are ready. We are better racers, we have better equipment, we are Queenslanders and we hope we have a massive Weipa crowd come out in force this weekend to cheer us on . . . so I say “bring it on”. None of this would be possible without our valued sponsors and the Weipa Dirt Kart Club thanks you and hopes we do you proud. So, the karts are here, the venue’s ready; all we need now is you.

To our local racers, good luck and play hard, and to my fellow committee members – it’s here and we made it happen. This weekend Weipa, we need your help. Come out and support us and make this event one to remember and one to celebrate. Racing starts at 7pm Friday night, we are licensed; we have hot food, stalls, collector’s edition shirts and stubby coolers. Saturday night we have fireworks and entertainment and most of all - we are ready! Let the show begin. – Mowlesy

Cape York wildlife With Australia Zoo Wildlife Ranger (Cape York) – Barry Lyon

The Antilopine Wallaroo CAPE York locals and visitors are often treated to the sight of the handsome Antilopine Wallaroo Macropus antilopinus, or ‘Northern Red’ as it is sometimes known. The males of this impressive animal may reach 1.2 metres in height, only .2 of a metre shorter than the famous Red Roo Macropus rufus of the outback plains, which is the world’s largest living Kangaroo species. Antilopines typically favour taller woodlands growing on plains and low hills, and are usually seen in small family groups with a dominant male. They are readily attracted to lightly burnt country where they feed on the green shoots of the new grass growth, and in such situations are occasionally seen in mobs of 20 or more.

While males of the species are distinctly reddish, females are greyer in their upper parts and naturally much smaller in size. Antilopines are active both day and night, and breed year round, although researchers have found that births are more commonplace during storm time as the dry season starts to cycle into the very start of the wet. Closely related to the much more stockily built Wallaroo that inhabits rocky hillsides, this roo also occurs in northern parts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia, but not across the vast Gulf of Carpentaria plains. Such flat habitat is much more suited to the Red Kangaroo and there it occurs at the northern extent of its range. The hopping action of Kangaroos is a remarkable energy

The flexible tendons in the animals legs act like springs, storing energy from each bound to then be used in the next - and so on and so on. It is thought that the jumping action also partly compresses the diaphram, thus even helping the Roo to breathe. Individual leaps of eight metres ( 25 feet) long are not uncommon with our larger species of Kangaroo. What a way to go!

Dangerous collisions with any kangaroos while driving at night can be minimised by reducing speed and improving vision by using vehicle mounted spotlights. Remember animals are blinded by strong lights at night (as are we), so once sighted, spotlights may have to be temporarily switched off to allow them to move off the road safely. Our Kangaroos truly are a key part of Australia’s unique and distinctive nature and deserve our every respect.

Public Notice with Adam Woodhouse

It pays to keep your super together There is over $17 billion dollars in lost and unclaimed super money in Australia.[1] Some of this money could be yours. Losing super is like throwing money away If you’ve changed jobs a few times you have probably ended up with more than one super account. Unless you notify your new employer about your existing super fund, a new super account will generally be established for you. As time goes on and your old accounts have no member activity they are considered to be ‘lost’ or ‘unclaimed’ and may end up on the ATO’s Lost Member Register. Get your super on track Having multiple super accounts generally isn’t a good idea because you: • Pay duplicate fees • Don’t know what you’re invested in • Have extra paperwork • May be missing out on entitlements. From 2014, the government is introducing a new process for automatically locating and consolidating multiple member accounts. Under this process, lost and inactive accounts with balances of $1,000 or less will be consolidated into the member’s current active account unless the member opts out.

While this process will definitely help reduce the number of lost super accounts there will still be a considerable number of lost or inactive accounts out there that need to be consolidated (with balances over $1,000). Consolidating your super has many benefits By actively taking charge of your super accounts you will be able to make decisions that work for you. What’s more, consolidating your super into a single account will make a big difference to your super savings. For more information on consolidating your superannuation accounts or other financial services, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam.woodhouse@infocus.com.au. We find many cat owners can be a bit naive and or/ bias, with the statement “My cat would never do that” being heard too many times. All cats are hunters. Yes, even your lovely cute cat that lives at home and snuggles up on the couch beside you. You can’t stop your cats killing other animals (just because your cats do not bring you their prey home, does not mean they are not out there killing), however you can make it harder for them by: • Ensuring they always wear a bell collar • Keeping your cat on your property. Either kept inside or in a special outdoor-house. • Keeping your cat inside at night. • Making sure your cat is desexed.

Unfortunately, when the sugar glider was brought into care she did not look too good. She was still alive, but extremely weak. After two injections of antibiotics and painkillers she last night ate 3ml of food. After speaking with our vet (Annabelle Olsen) she informed us that the bacteria found in a cats mouth (pasteurella) is sadly, enough to kill a sugar glider dying of Toxemia, so the chances of her surviving were not very high. Also catnip, a plant used either fresh, dried or as an oil in most cat toys, is also highly toxic to sugar gliders and would be enough to kill. Despite our best efforts, our little sugar glider unfortunately did not make it and passed away in my hands. We learn from our mistakes and try to change them, so again please all be RESPONSIBLE pet owners and do the right thing. Thank you. – Kristy Philliskirk

One of the bandits that was crucified next to Jesus called out to him to remember him when Jesus came with his kingdom. The Lord Jesus said that on that very afternoon he would be with Jesus in his kingdom, showing that it’s faith in Jesus that matters, and not any good works that we do. (Remember that Jesus sees into people’s hearts and would know if it was a real confession of faith about him or not). When Jesus was challenged by some of the teachers of the law for forgiving the sins of a

paralysed man, the NIV Bible in Matthew Ch 9 v 4 states that Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?” Like the thief on the cross, our aim for eternal life can only be achieved by our confession of faith in Jesus Christ and then spread the gospel of what he has done on the world’s behalf. Our attitudes as Christians should be that we do good because we are saved, not in order to be saved. Ordinary people of the world, including Christians, do a lot of good things in helping

each other, but no matter how often or how much is done, it will not get us into heaven. The divine rule placed by God to get to heaven requires that we be born again and have faith alone in Jesus Christ. (John 14:6) As said before, we Christians do good works because we are saved, not because our good works will save us. However, our good works importantly reflects who and what we believe in. It’s an attitude thing towards God and his requirements. God is gracious. Rev Michael Connolly

Cape York NRL Development Officer Karl Adams with the Weipa youngsters at the Northern Pride Holiday Camp.

DURING the school holidays a few Weipa youngsters indulged in some rugby league experience. Tatiana King-Smith, Jack Backo, Sammy Bowenda and Seamus King-Smith made the trip to Cairns to participate in the Northern Pride Holiday Camp held over two days at West Barlow Park. The camp had a total of 50 kids who came from as far and wide as Mount Isa and Mornington Island. The kids got the chance to have specialised coaching from Northern Pride staff Chey Bird, Ty Williams, Rod Jensen, Josiah Sailor and local NRL Development Officer Karl Adams. They also got to compete in a league-tag competition. Tatiana King-Smith was the only female at the camp and definitely stood her ground, so much so that by the second day the boys were very wary when running her way. The Northern Pride hold camps annually and look forward to more kids attending from the Cape/Torres region. – Karl Adams

AFL wrap-up with Dallas GEELONG continue their dominance over the high flying Hawks and North are still battling for the top eight. Geelong once again defeated the Hawks in a close, top of the table clash, which from all accounts has Hawthorn fans really spitting the dummy! Richmond supporters will also be spewing about being towelled up by the desperate Kangaroos. North looked to have all but stuffed their season but this strong victory has them still battling on the fringe of the eight. Collingwood dealt Carlton a blow in their push for the top eight while Sydney were stronger over the Demons. The Western Bulldogs were lucky not to drop their points in a very close one over GWS and West Coast left it right to the end to topple the Crows, also by less than a goal. Fremantle got over the top of St Kilda and Essendon were too strong for Port Adelaide. I think the Gold Coast also lost to some team but I’m trying to erase this memory. I’m sure to be reminded many times this week. Round 16 features a couple of ‘derbys’, with the Eagles playing the Dockers and Sydney facing GWS. Collingwood tackles Adelaide and Port are at home to the Hawks. Geelong get it easier this week against Melbourne and Carlton must beat St Kilda to keep their finals ambitions alive. North can also keep their season alive with a win over the Lions and the Bulldogs will find it tough against the Bombers. Richmond play the last of their highly successful ‘home’ games in Cairns on Saturday. Qantas have kindly kept the flight prices ridiculously high so I won’t be there to see the Suns this year. Probably not a bad thing as the Suns have about 10 top players missing through injury so Richmond should get them for the first time this year. But then, they should have in the last two years as well. My Tips – Collingwood, Hawthorn, Geelong, Richmond, Carlton, North Melbourne, Sydney, Essendon, Fremantle.. That’s the wrap! Go the Suns! Quiz answers

The Mackerel and Longtail Tuna are here one minute gone the next, but when you find the bait schools there is a good chance that the Tuna and Mackerel won’t be far away. I haven’t had any reports from up north or around the reefs of Duyfken Point but I’m sure that if you ventured that way you should be rewarded with good results. Jim Borthwick from All Fed Up Fishing Charters found

had a big head-shake and threw the lure, hitting the trace man in the face - if he wasn’t wearing his glasses would have been pinned in the eye. He still was hooked in the eyebrow though so take care when landing your captures. The three rivers are holding plenty of Barra, most are small but there are some good ones around to keep things interesting. Keep your eyes peeled for some of these bigger fish have been spotted and sight casting is an exciting way to fish.

some big Golden Trevally and other reef fish when conditions were suitable and when the winds kept him in the rivers put his clients onto some nice Barra and Mangrove Jacks. The Mission River Bridge has been kind to Mick Dacey who helped Rob Asworth with the landing of his big Barra, who has been leaving the boat at home and put some hours in at the bridge, hooking two large Barra but only landing one. While tracing one Barra it

Strong winds challenge fishers As I sit and write this report the wind outside is blowing around 30 knots and conditions for fishing are not the most pleasant. Outside fishing is non-existent, as with the winds the seas have come up, churning up the sea bed and the water is very milky close in. As well as the murky water the weed that grows near the close-in reefs is being torn out and floating and anyone trolling will get a little frustrated with the brown stuff fouling the lines. In saying all this before the winds came up there were some very good fish caught on the reefs. I was talking to Owey, who guides for Allan Philliskirk’s Fish’s Fly & Sportfishing, who found some big Fingermark up to 70cms, and Tuskers, however the ever-present Sharks proved to be a nuisance taking some of the bigger table fish hooked.
