DIscussIng the operation’s response to the tough market conditions facing the resources industry was the key topic at rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s second quarterly community forum for the year, with more than 30 residents attending. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager, operations, Gareth Manderson, said he was pleased with the turnout and the discussions with community members. “Our forums are a great opportunity to hear what issues matter most to our community and what is of current concern,” Mr Manderson said. Access to the mining lease was a popular topic with attendees asking questions relating to areas now becoming active. “The forum allowed us to explain that cultural heritage and environmental surveys are under way on the South of Embley lease and also in an area near RAAF Scherger base, about 30 kilometres north-east of Weipa,” Mr Manderson said. “There is no public access

Are you following the federal election? You should do. It’s the best soap opera on television at the moment. It has all the colourful characters you could wish for, and in true soap opera style, they are all a tad exaggerated and quite unbelievable. Centre stage we have the old campaigners, Tony Ears and Weasel Kevin. We are not hearing too much from Tony at the moment, partly because he has said just about everything already but also because

it is hard to talk about policy options without becoming specific. Tony doesn’t do specifics. We are hearing a lot more from The Weasel, perhaps because he has a harder job to do. He has to convince Labor voters that he is a fine, upstanding chap, full up to the ears with integrity. He has to convince the rest of the country that he is a hairy chested right winger, ready to sort out boat people with torpedoes. This is a problem for Tony Ears who has spent recent years convincing us he is more conservative than Our Julia and now finds himself out-flanked by Kevin the Hun. What else? News that Bob Katter and Clive Palmer had sat down some time ago to see if they could reach an agreement to cooperate. Both sides agreed that sorting out the leadership between Clive and Bob would be a bit like putting two cats (or hippos) in a sack. If anything emerged

alive, it probably would be hospitalised for months. And now a new contender has thrown his hat into the ring, and this one is not actually asking for your vote. Rupert Murdoch has sent his senior hatchet man – known in the media underworld as Col Pot – to Australia. Like his Cambodian namesake, Comrade Pot does not believe in taking prisoners and he is here to ensure that only an acceptable government is elected. Weasel Kevin clearly won’t do, and the Murdoch papers are making sure we understand that. Tony Ears, well, maybe. It all depends on policy. Specifically, on whether the NBN can be crippled or even stopped altogether. The nation’s future depends entirely on whether new technology is permitted to challenge Murdoch’s Australian gold mine - Foxtel, and Col Pot has ways of stopping things happening.

WHAT’S ON...

MORE than 60 volunteers joined forces to clear Chilli Beach of marine debris at the annual clean-up last week. A total of 4910kg of debris was weighed in which included 4757 thongs. Chilli Beach clean-up organiser Heidi Taylor from Tangaroa Blue said she was pleased with the results. “The total weight of rubbish weighed-in was slightly down on 2012 figures, however there were more thongs collected in this year’s clean-up,” she said. This year’s clean-up volunteers included members of Conservation Volunteers Australia, Lockhart River Kawadji Kanidji Rangers, Cook Shire Council, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Queensland Parks & Wildlife Rangers, Tangaroa Blue and the Lockhart River Primary School. “There were more than 30 volunteers who participated for the whole five days of the clean-up and we covered 6.5km of the beach, from the river mouth at the southern end to the northern boundary of Chilli Beach,” Heidi said.

“On Friday we were joined by Lockhart River community members, Weipa locals, and tourists from all over the world so it was a terrific mix of people lending a hand for a great cause.” One of the clean-up volunteers, Luke McConell, operates a marine plastic debris recycling plant in Byron Bay and will be taking delivery of seven cubic metres of plastic, collected at the Chilli Beach clean-up and baled by the Cook Shire Council on-site, to be recycled in the near future. “There is a large market for recycled marine debris plastic and I am very interested in working with local groups to establish a recycling plant here on Cape York,” Luke said. Interestingly, after analysis it has been found that over 90 per cent of rubbish collected on Chilli Beach is not from Australia. “Most of the rubbish is from Southeast Asia,” Heidi said. “It’s really a matter of trying to educate the people in these countries to stop discarding their rubbish in the oceans, rather than having to deal with the enormous job of cleaning it up once it arrives on our shores.”

Weipa SES unit on the move with new flood boat

SES FLOOD BOAT ARRIVAL: Sean Anthony (Weipa SES), Darren Carr (SES and manager of Toll Marine), Joshua Reurich, Wil Spresser, Trevor Snodgrass and Peter Siegmeier (Weipa SES) with the new boat on Monday.

T H E We i p a S t a t e Emergency Services (SES) unit took delivery of a new flood boat on Monday, August 5. The new boat, which was shipped to Weipa free of charge by Toll Marine Logistics, will greatly increase the unit’s ability to respond to incidents involved on the water and allow access to hard to get to isolated land areas. Local Controller, Trevor Snodgrass said the free shipping was part of a long sponsorship between Weipa SES and Toll. “On an ongoing basis Toll transports batteries and other recyclable items to Cairns for us. “Funds raised from these sales go towards ongoing projects such as a new 4x4 Landcruiser to

replace the existing Troop Carrier, and a service body for the new Isuzu 4x4 10 tonne twin-cab truck. “Business and community support for these projects has been exceptional,” he said. The new flood boat, supplied by Emergency Management Queensland replaces the unit’s present 12-year old boat, which Trevor said has served the unit well. “Valued at $90,000 the new boat comes with all the bells and whistles,” he said. “It’s slightly larger than the old boat with a 115hp motor and is licensed for a total of 10 persons.” The Weipa SES unit currently has four skippers and a crew of 10 available.

An independent review is underway to ensure Queensland’s senior assessment and tertiary entrance processes continue to provide school leavers with fair and comprehensive recognition of their academic achievements. With school-based apprenticeships and vocational education and training on the rise, senior students are using many different pathways to reach their tertiary destinations and the review is an opportunity to ensure the Queensland system reflects this. Recommendations will be presented to the Queensland Government by July 31, 2014.

To the Ahmat family I HAVE known Aggie since I started with Rio in the year 2000. In those first years, we both operated a water cart (Alpha 36 at that time). Even then I warmed to her as a kind, friendly and sometimes humorous matriarch-type figure on shift 4. But it really hasn’t been until the last four to five years that I found out what a truly remarkable woman your Mother was. She managed to administer and oversee your father’s dialysis regardless of whether she was battling her own fatigue between night shifts or not, whenever it was required, something that would be emotionally taxing on the best of us. And what would she do to keep herself awake? She would bake a batch of those pumpkin scones or a chocolate cake for shift 4. In the last three to four years, during some particularly troubling times in my life, I have come to know the depth of her kindness and compassion. Without delving too deep into my personal struggles, Aggie invited me to Pennefather during

ings, G&S Engineering Services, Randall O’Neill and Helen Sabatino, the May family, Cape York Candles, Mick Hogan and Janice Baird, and Gavin Roberts. Without you all it wouldn’t be possible.

a very dark time in my life. I am unable to convey with words the feeling of crossing that last sand dune and seeing Pennefather Beach and then arriving at Ahmat’s camp. Usually Aggie was already out fishing at the Pennefather River at her favourite spot on the rock shelf under the she-oak trees. So it was time to unload the quad and go looking, but we always knew where to find her. For me the therapy had begun, and continued with a quad ride along the beach together with my two sons to look for Aunty Aggie (who had become a kind, wise Aunty to many, many people). This usually culminated in finding her and joining her in catching some fish for our dinner along with some good humoured banter and watching the kids hunt for some crabs amongst the rocks. It was like a massive burden had been lifted from my shoulders and I had arrived at my spiritual home. In the evening it usually began with a delicious meal of something we’d caught or gathered during the day, followed by a night quad ride or maybe a bonfire on the beach.

We h o p e e v e r y o n e enjoyed themselves and will join us again next year...and we promise there won’t be as much water around! Tonia May, Weipa Diabetes Support Group

But if I can let you (Aggie’s family) know, by writing this letter, how grateful I am to your Mum for offering me, not only sanctuary, but also empathy, understanding, wisdom and welcoming me warmly into her own spiritual home, then I hope you can draw some comfort from what she meant to not only me, but many other troubled single parents and a whole generation of kids who loved her. I am not a religious person, but I do feel an almost urgent need to tell you, all her children, family, friends and everybody that loved her, of the immeasurable and profound effect your Mother had on my two sons and I. Thank you Aggie and Rest In Peace. Toby Sterling

Weipa Catholic school passes approval milestones A NEW Catholic primary school in Weipa came a step closer this week with the completion of three significant approvals. Cairns Catholic Education Services executive director Br Paul Hough said the proposed school received provisional accreditation from the Non State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) and approval from the Queensland Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek for eligibility for government funding. “We’ve also just been advised the Weipa Town Authority has approved our development application for the Prep to Year 6 school in Boundary Road,” he said. Br Paul said the approvals were testament to the determination and support from the local Catholic community for many years: “They are a tireless, resilient and very determined group – these milestones reflect well on them.”

He said Bishop James Foley had determined the school would take the name of the local church and be known as St Joseph’s Catholic School. “We are also grateful for the ongoing support of the Weipa community and their desire to have a choice of education providers in the community, as well as the ongoing support from Peter McCulkin and the Weipa Town Authority, and Rio Tinto which is providing the leasehold land,” he said. Br Paul said the school had just missed the capital funding round this year and would now be submitted for capital funding in the 2014 round. If capital funding was approved the school would open to accept its first students in 2016. He said the new school would work in co-operation with the Western Cape College and not in competition. “At the end of the day we want to improve school options for the families of Weipa.”

Traditional Owners open Janie Creek

TRADITIONAL Owners opened up the Janie Creek area to family, friends and visitors last Wednesday, July 31, (pictured above) with Cooktown family members travelling to Turtle Camp to announce the opening. Linda and her sister Nancy thanked everyone for their patience and respect with regard to the closure, in remembrance of their dearly beloved brother who passed away early this year. Linda also bid the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers a successful and safe working season at Turtle Camp.

Dr Col Limpus, present at the camp for the next fortnight to kick-off the turtle season updated the Cooktown family on research activities being carried out on Flinders Beach. He stressed the importance of monitoring the breeding success of Olive Ridley turtles and the presence of Rangers on the beach deterring predation. Visitors are now welcome to fish and visit the area, camping is allowed but not beyond One Tree until the turtle season finishes. Visitor permits apply and can be obtained from the Rugapayn Store, Mapoon.

Mr Yeatman said the restructure was the dawning of a new era in

Camping made easy with new local business

FAMILY AFFAIR: Weipa Camper Hire’s Grace, Laurie, Lincoln, Jaymie and Cilla Raleigh. By Giembra Busmer

AN annual camping trip to Reedy Brook for the Ashes cricket series was the driving force behind a new Weipa business venture. A few years ago Laurie and Cilla Raleigh arrived at Reedy Brook, pitched their tent as per usual and proceeded to remove all the necessary equipment from their trailer. “As we were unloading everything we took notice of those people arriving with camper trailers and how quickly and efficiently they were able to set-up camp,” Cilla said. On their return to Weipa the couple invested in their first camper trailer and spent the next couple of years formulating a plan for a local camper trailer hire business. “If you look on the internet there are dozens of camper hire services throughout Australia and we saw it as a great opportunity in Cape York,” Cilla said. “It took us a quite a while to wade through the mountains of paperwork required for a hire business but we finally launched the business at the beginning of this year’s tourist season.” Weipa Camper Hire has two camper trailers available for short-term hire, one suitable for a couple and two small children, the other suited to six people. Both camper trailers are fully equipped with beds, linen, crockery,

cutlery, chairs, tables . . . everything, including the kitchen sink, you would need on a short-term camping trip. “Hirers need only to add their food and drinks and they are on the road,” Cilla said. Hirers are invited to acquaint themselves with the camper trailers prior to pick-up and Cilla and Laurie ensure they know how everything works before hitting the road. “We have the camper trailers folded out in the yard so we can demonstrate how to pack them back up again,” Cilla said. “We also have information packs which include pamphlets on alcohol restrictions and camping information.” Cilla said the camper trailers are ideal for tourists who do not want to tow their own equipment up to the Cape and for locals who may not own their own camping equipment. “So far we have hired the campers to locals who either didn’t have their own camper trailers or needed extra accommodation and gear for visitors. “They are ideal for a weekend getaway, a week-long camp or for shift-workers on their four days off.” Both camper trailers are fully insured and Weipa Camper Hire also offer a recovery service. Cape York HHS achieves above target Closing the Gap results THE Cape York Hospital and Health Service has achieved above target results for many of its Closing the Gap health indicators. Cape York Hospital and Health Service (HHS) chief executive Susan Turner said the Closing the Gap success was discussed at the Estimates Committee for health hearing in State Parliament in July. She said the result was a testament to the hard work and dedication of Cape York staff to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Ms Turner said the Cape York HHS benchmarked its performance against the Closing the Gap targets identified in the national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework and the Council of Australian Governments targets. “The targets aim to close the gap in discrepancies in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations,’’ Ms Turner said. “During 2012-13 in Cape York, we exceeded the targets for reducing the percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies with low birth weights.

“We also exceeded the targets for increasing the number of Indigenous mothers receiving five or more antenatal visits during pregnancy and also for reducing the number of potentially preventable hospitalisations.’’ Ms Turner said during 201213 the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies with low birth weights had been reduced from a baseline average of 14.4 per cent of all births in 2006-7 to about 10.9 per cent. “This is well below the established target of 12.8 per cent,’’ she said. “In terms of the percentage of Indigenous mothers receiving five or more antenatal visits,

Cape York has achieved a rate of 98.6 per cent, which is higher than the target of 93.8 per cent.’’ “Similarly, with potentially preventable hospitalisations of Indigenous people, we have achieved a reduction from a baseline rate of 5.05 in 2006-7 to 3.5, which is also below the target rate of 3.65.’’ Ms Turner said the Cape York HHS still had some work to do to reduce the number of Indigenous clients who were discharging themselves from hospital against medical advice, as well as in reducing smoking rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women during any stage of pregnancy. “But we are working hard

to improve our performance in these areas,’’ she said. “For instance, we are currently recruiting additional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officers to help us reduce the number of Indigenous clients discharging against medical advice and we are undertaking additional awareness programs at the community and primary health levels about the risks of smoking during pregnancy. “The increased use of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers to deliver appropriate health messages and ensure services are delivered in a culturally respectful manner is also helping us work towards and achieve our targets.’’

Is salary sacrifice right for you? If you want to give your super savings a boost by making personal contributions, one option to consider is using your pre-tax income. This is known as salary sacrificing and it can be a very effective way of growing your super balance, depending on your personal circumstances. Salary sacrificing into super can not only help you grow your super savings but it can also provide you with favourable tax outcomes. This is why salary sacrifice contributions are known as ‘concessional contributions’. The contributions you make into super with your pre-tax income are only taxed at a maximum rate of 15%. This gives your super a boost as, with less tax applied to your contributions, you have more money to invest than you would if you were investing outside super. The end result is the potential for a bigger retirement nest egg. The other key benefit of salary sacrifice is that it could reduce the amount of income tax you pay. This is because you only pay tax on your reduced salary, which may lower your marginal tax rate. A salary sacrifice strategy isn’t right for everyone. Generally speaking, you are most likely to benefit from salary sacrificing if you pay a marginal tax rate of over 15%. For this reason, there is little benefit of salary

sacrificing if you earn less than $37,000 per year. Another important consideration is whether you can afford to receive less salary each month. For this reason, a salary sacrifice strategy is ideally suited to people who are already receiving income from other sources beside their salary, such as rental income from an investment property or dividends from a share portfolio. Before deciding whether or not salary sacrifice is right for you, make sure you know all the rules and consider the different ways to contribute more to super before you dive in. God wants to be really close to his people, and he had a Tabernacle or Tent of Meeting built that was portable and had compartments that placed the holy God among his people yet set apart as he his Holy. In there was also the Ark of the Covenant and the Ten Commandments. The Tabernacle tent was made a huge permanent building by King Solomon around 964 BC but was destroyed around 586BC and a second temple was built in Jerusalem around 538BC. Keep this fact in mind because the tearing of

the veil was in this big building in Jerusalem at the time of the Lord’s death, and not in the Tent. (See Mark Ch 13 vs 1-2). The Temple was set out the same with the Holy of Holies and the same rules with the High priest the only one allowed and even then only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, to get the nation’s sins forgiven. The moment Jesus died the way was thrown open for the general public (ordinary people) to look upon the Holy of Holies for the first

time without anyone dropping dead! The shedding of the Lord’s blood and his death on the cross opened the way for everyone who put their faith in God’s Son, Jesus, to now go boldly to the Presence of Almighty God and talk to him! What love! What grace! Animal blood was necessary all year round to keep good relationship with God, but with the spilt blood of Jesus, it was necessary only once. (Read Hebrews Ch 10 vs 9-12). Praise the Lord!

Changes to pilotage services

From November pilotage services will be transferred to government-owned port corporations.

CHANGES to ship pilotage legislation were announced by the Queensland Government on Tuesday, August 6. From November, pilotage services, currently provided by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) based in Brisbane, will be transferred to individual government-owned port corporations. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the changes would mean that ports would have greater flexibility to make on-the-spot decisions that are safe for industry and the environment without waiting for advice to come from Brisbane. “This move will improve efficiencies and ensure MSQ focuses on its core responsibility of maintaining standards and regulation of the port pilotage function,” he said. Across Queensland there are 69

marine pilots and under the proposed legislation all will remain in their current positions with no changes to their conditions. During the transition process the State Government will retain responsibility for pricing, ensuring the same level of service delivery. It is compulsory for all ships over 50 metres to take on a pilot (an experienced ship’s master with higher local knowledge) when entering and leaving Queensland ports. Gladstone Ports Corporation, Far North Queensland Ports Corporation, Port of Townsville and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation will take control of ship pilotage services. Together they will manage the provision of marine pilots for vessels operating in 16 compulsory pilotage areas.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas UPSETS galore and the battle for the top eight gets even more complex. Richmond undoubtedly caused the upset of the round, cleaning up ladder leaders Hawthorn at a wet MCG on Saturday. This may have been a season defining moment for the Tigers who now have shown that they can take on the top four sides and push well into September! Geelong were the other high flying victims, being beaten by a Kangaroos side who just won’t say die. With this unexpected win, North are still just in the hunt for the top eight. At the bottom end of the table GWS had their first victory of the season over the hapless Demons who look to be back to their worst. Collingwood have returned to form with a strong win over the Bombers, who have now dropped out of the top four. Port Adelaide won the showdown with the Crows in spectacular fashion, kicking a goal with 30 seconds left to snatch the lead and the game. This was a vital win for Port as they teeter on the edge of the eight but are two wins clear of ninth placed Carlton. It also ended the Crows run for finals. West Coast and Brisbane have stayed in the hunt for another week with wins over the Suns and St Kilda respectively. With top four sides dropping their games, the Swans and Fremantle have moved into second and fourth with their weekend victories. Carlton will be feeling the heat after this loss to Freo. They now have all the makings of a Richmond-like end to the season in ninth. Carlton fans could well be suffering the Blues if they don’t lift as North, Brisbane and the Eagles are nipping at their heels. It really all comes down to Port though. If they win two more games only percentage can knock them out of the eight, but they have a tricky run home. It could be close come the last round! The top eight has tightened with only four wins separating first to eighth place. In bizarre circumstance, Richmond, having beaten top placed Hawthorn, find themselves dropping a spot to seventh after the Pies improved their percentage. The AFL have received the ASSADA Essendon drugs report and we all wait eagerly for the response and its potentially season changing repercussions for all. This week the games to watch will be Geelong v Port and Sydney v Collingwood. The top sides all take on lesser opposition but the pressure will be on with such a tight top eight. One slip-up could cost sides a double chance in the finals. And of course if Carlton, North, West Coast or Brisbane falters they can almost kiss their season goodbye. My tips- Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong, Carlton, Sydney, Gold Coast, Essendon, North Melbourne and Fremantle. My wife grew up in Richmond and is from a long-suffering family of Tigers fans. They had yellow and black cots and have been spitting the dummy ever since their last premiership in 1980. My brother-in-law won’t even use/say the number nine any time after June in case it jinxes them again. If you hadn’t worked it out I have a soft spot for the “Tiges” through marriage, the only time I barrack against them is when they play the Suns. Having made the pilgrimage to see them at the MCG some years ago I can only imagine the awesome atmosphere last weekend when they knocked over the table topping Hawks. Hoping everyone (except the local Hawks fan, who made my day skulking around Woollies having left the TV in the fourth quarter in disgust) is enjoying their resurgence. Surely they can’t stuff it from here again? That’s the wrap! Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Karl SURPRISING performances throughout the weekend, made tipping a very unpredictable nightmare. Friday night saw a very entertaining match between the Broncos and the Knights with both teams having to settle for a draw at fulltime. Then the Roosters dominated the Panthers in an easy win. On Saturday the Sharks scraped home against the Warriors, the Sea Eagles thrashed the Eels and the Cowboys pulled the upset of the round with a win over the Rabbitohs. On Sunday the Storm disgraced the Raiders in a convincingly dominant performance, and the Titans played well to get a win over the Tigers. Monday night’s game saw the Bulldogs prove to be too good for the Dragons. Looking forward into Round 22, on Friday will be an entertaining match with the Storm taking on the Rabbitohs, and the Eels versing the Tigers. Saturday will see two games with the Roosters playing the Raiders, and the Sharks looking for a win over the Knights. Super Sunday has three games with the Sea Eagles and the Warriors battling it out, then the Broncos and the Dragons play. And to finish off Super Sunday the Panthers and the Cowboys go head to head. Monday night’s game will be between the Bulldogs and the Titans. Karl’s Tips: Storm, Eels, Roosters, Sharks, Sea Eagles, Dragons, Cowboys and Titans. Yours in footy, Karl

Rapala in a purple colour. We had only gone a couple of hundred metres when the Rapala went off and after short time Stuart traced a large Longtail Tuna for me which was promptly released to fight another day. We started to troll again and virtually hooked up straight away on the gold Halco and Stuart landed a big Spanish Mackerel which went straight into the ice box. This pattern continued for the next hour or so before we went to find some reef and try for some bottom fish. We moved around a lot but had very little luck. I went back down on Sunday with a co-worker, Jenelle Persson and found the Mackerel still on the chew, so when we got a 15kg specimen we went looking for bottom fish. After several moves Jenelle got a big Tusker but it was the only legal-sized fish we landed. Back at the ramp I was talking to some guys and they had the same story - there were some good fish but they had to be patient and get through all the little ones. One lucky angler was young Jarvis Marshal who landed a lovely Fingermark. This young bloke eats,

sleeps and lives for fishing and his passion for the sport is unbelievable. On our way out on both days there was a boat with four guys tossing lures along the rocks on the southern side of the entrance so there could be something happening there. The Mission River bridge is still giving up good Barra at night, with a 91cm fish taken on a soft plastic, and out in the boats there are Blue Salmon taking baits and lures. When I was launching the boat on Sunday there was a chap that

was finished for the day and had caught some nice Barra on lures . He started at daybreak and was finished by 7.30am. I am still looking for reports so send your photos to my e-mail address. I want to end this week’s column with a quote: “Limit your catch, not catch your limit”. This is so true if we want to retain viable fisheries and we should all try and live by this. ‘Til next week smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. Cheers, China

Looking at the boat ramps there were not many spare parking spots so there were plenty of boats out in the rivers and out to sea. On Saturday I fished with Stuart McKinnon and we ventured down towards Red Cliffs. I was keen to try out the new sounder I recently installed and was very impressed with the performance of the Humminbird 898. I could read the bottom at 24 knots and was showing up structure as if we were just idling along. The 898 has down and side imaging and if you haven’t used this before it’s absolutely mind-blowing. Humminbird has now introduced 360 degree imaging as well, so with the side imaging you can see what’s on either side of the boat, not just in the transducer cone, and you can actually have four different screens going at once. On our way to Red Cliffs we noticed large schools of bait with some large predators around them so we dropped in a gold Halco Laser Pro 190 in the two-metre depth range with a deep diving

Classic weekend for lady bowlers

CLASSIC: 30 teams (two more than previous years) from around Queensland competed in the 2013 Weipa Ladies Bauxite Classic, held last weekend at the Weipa Bowls Club. The Men’s Classic will be played this weekend.

WITH $15,000 in prize-money up for grabs lady bowlers from all over Queensland enjoyed two fantastic days of bowls at last weekend’s 2013 Weipa Bauxite Classic. Thirty teams (two more than previous years) made up of top Queensland bowlers and a number of virgin bowlers, played in this year’s tournament. Local team Straight Shooters did everyone a favour by defeating favourites (Mareeba Gals) in the second round on Saturday. After three hard-fought games on day one, there were eight teams undefeated and a very open competition, with the Sambucca Sisters leading. At the end of five games it was still anyone’s tournament with five teams still undefeated, and at the end of the day the top four teams had all won six out of six games. Sambucca Sisters, who placed second in 2012, did one better this year, finishing in top spot with a better margin than last

year’s winners Straight Shooters. Old Mates (ex-Weiparites and crowd favourites) performed consistently despite Raewyn suffering an injury before the game on Saturday morning. It was great to see these ladies do well as they have put so much into Weipa and the Bowls Club. The fantastic display of sportswomanship throughout the weekend was welcomed by all, and gave our locals a chance to show off their skills, and our newer bowlers the experience of playing top-line bowlers. The Weipa Bowls Club match committee would like to thank the following for their sponsorship and continuous support: QCCU, umpire (David Egan), bar staff, kitchen staff, greenkeepers, scorers, helpers, subs and all our supporters. A special thank you to our major sponsors Catherine and John Kennedy from Goodline. Congratulations to all our round winners and the Weipa Bowls Club look forward to hosting this event in 2014.

playing contact sport due to an ongoing hip problem, but his passion for the game keeps him turning up with his boots ready to strap-up for his beloved Weipa Raiders. “He very rarely misses a game and has played for the Weipa Raiders since the early ‘90s,” Mr Adams said. Mr Adams said over the past 25 years Walter has played in many all blacks carnivals from Brisbane to the Torres Strait. This dedicated team man also was a m o n g 1 1 We i p a players who made a seven-hour journey to Kowanyama a few weeks back for round two of the Cape Cluster competition. The side was short of numbers and Walter wasn’t going to let them down. Walter is highly respected and is the type of man who is the backbone of any football club.
