Tractors to the Tip
By Giembra Busmer
NOW there’s something you don’t see every day . . . 12 blokes trundling into town on tractors. With tractor drivers from almost every state of Australia and a small
army of back-up vehicles and support crew the group made an impressive entrance into Weipa on Saturday afternoon. The 12 adventurers are members of the Harry Ferguson Tractor Club
of Australia and they pulled into Weipa on Saturday morning for a relaxing couple of days before heading for their final destination – the northernmost tip of Australia. continued page 2

It’s a long way to the top . . . on a tractor from page 1
The plan to trundle tractors from Cooktown to the tip of Cape York and back again was instigated 18 months ago by Victorian John Paul who found there was plenty of interest from other tractor owners to join him on his adventure. “We have people from every state in Australia except the Northern Territory,” John said. “There are 1400 members in the Harry Ferguson Tractor Club of Australia I’ve been in the club for 11 years, and have been organising treks for years.” And the tractor treks John’s talking about are not for the feint hearted, with trips across the Simpson Desert, around Tasmania and to Alice Springs to name a few. “We like to go for weekend drives and attend tractor events with the club but the treks are the best adventure of all,” John said. The tractors themselves were a mature mob, with the youngest tractor being 45 years of age and the oldest 62 years. Averaging speeds of around 15 kilometres per hour the drivers spend around six hours per day in the saddle and aim to cover around 100 kilometres per day. “We’re camping out each night and five of the 12 tractors are carrying all their camping equipment on board, while the other seven are relying on the back-up vehicles,” John said. All the drivers agreed that fellow Cape York drivers (although generally in 4WDs) had been kind to them on the roads, despite their distinct lack of speed.

DID you hear we are going to have an election? I thought you might have . . . Well, the wind has dropped a tad, so why don’t you just go fishing and get away from the incessant talking heads and wriggling politicians? LNP. He has the backing of some really important people i.e. Rupert Murdoch and News Corp, and many electors dislike him less than they dislike his Labor opponents. However, so far his minders have not let him say anything significant about policies. Unfortunately for them, he will have to touch on specifics soon and the results could be, well, interesting. Opposing Tony, we have Kevin the Weasel. Kevin is remarkable because many people genuinely like him. On the other hand, the people who actually know him – his colleagues and people who have suffered him as a boss – absolutely loathe him. At

“Everyone has just been so friendly and interested in what we are doing - it’s been an absolute pleasure.” The tractor trekkers left Weipa on Monday morning, bound for Batavia Station, before heading up the Telegraph Track to the Tip of Cape York. “We should be back in Cooktown on September 7 or 8,” John said. “We’ve allowed 10 days driving to the Tip, five days resting at Seisia, and 10 days back again . . . you can’t rush these things!” And if you didn’t think driving a tractor around Cape York was quirky enough the drivers are ceremoniously serenaded as they depart their overnight camps by their very own bagpipe player, Dookie (a member of the Horsham Highland Pipe Band in Victoria) complete with kilt and sporan. Now, that’s the way to see Cape York!
one stage they called him Dr Death, behind his back, of course. The Labor Party is not a fundamentally happy place at the moment, and the prospect of a big defeat has made things worse. Enter the White Knight, parachuted into a winnable Labor seat. Yes, it’s Peter Beattie to the rescue, and there he was sharing a platform with The Weasel as if they were old chums – which they definitely are not. Still, Peter looks good, and I have a lot of time for him after I learned that, as a young man, he had been bopped on the head with a police truncheon and thrown

into the Watchhouse during an anti-apartheid demonstration. He may well win extra votes for Labor - a man to watch. And then we have the Tweedle-Dum and TweedleDee of the elections - Clive Palmer and Bob Katter. Both of them can talk sense, and they don’t have embarrassing histories in government. They could well garner some significant protest votes, but don’t expect either of them to be Prime Minister just yet. If they did well enough to form a parliamentary block, wouldn’t that be interesting? They would keep the big boys honest, and that would be great for Australia.

economic, physical and social circumstances. “By increasing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce, and by providing them with clear career and employment pathways, we position ourselves to achieve excellence in culturally appropriate service delivery and address the complex factors that contribute to people’s health status,” Cleveland Fagan said. Animal shelter seeks volunteers CApE Animal protection Shelter (CApS) is desperately seeking volunteers. The non-profit organisation cares for homeless and unwanted dogs in the Weipa and surrounding area and CAPS president, Tonia May said more carers are needed. “We are looking for people who are interested in becoming carers for dogs in their own homes for a maximum of three months,” Tonia said. Dog food is provided to foster carers, thanks to Weipa Woolworths who provide CAPS with their “split” bags of food. would their own dogs,” Tonia said. Volunteers are also required for the other services provided by CAPS, including dog feeding and exercising. “If you’re looking for extra exercise dog walking is a great idea,” Tonia said. “With no boarding kennels in town we need volunteers to assist us with dog feeding when people need to leave their dogs at home when they are on holidays.” CAPS committee members are also needed to perform odd jobs for the organisation and assist with fundraising. Rising awareness on recognition New research shows that public awareness has risen about the quest to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia’s Constitution. Awareness rose by five percentage points, to 42 percent, in the months since March this year and nine points since September last year, research by Auspoll has found. And support for constitutional recognition of the first Australians also lifted by four percentage points since March. It rose to 61 percent of all Australians by last month. The research comes as leaders of the movement today call on political leaders to reunite in their shared resolve to pursue constitutional recognition of the first Australians, once the election is over. While fierce competition among political parties is expected over the next five weeks, in an email sent to thousands of supporters, leaders of the movement are calling for collaboration and cross-party resolve on recognition to resume post-election. Recognise spokeswoman Tanya Hosch: “We’ve seen strong support and goodwill from both
political leaders on this issue. As soon as the campaign is over, we need them to work together again to get this important work done for our nation.” “That’s what a growing movement of Australians wants to achieve as well.” The Auspoll research was conducted in early July, five weeks after the start of a nationwide relay, The Journey to Recognition, to raise awareness about the push to recognise the first Australians in our founding document and to remove discrimination from it. “We want to ensure as many Australians as possible have the opportunity to support constitutional recognition,” Recognise spokesperson Tanya Hosch said. “So we decided to put our feet to the road and get moving around the country, taking the important message of recognition and the removal of discrimination from our nation’s founding document. Ultimately, we want Australians of all walks of life to come together and achieve an overwhelming yes vote at a referendum.” “Constitutional recognition is not an easy feat and nor is traversing this vast and incredible country—our physical journey is representative of our commitment
to this campaign for change,” she said. So far, recognition campaigners have walked more than 700kms, cycled over 1200kms, driven over 2700kms, and paddled 7 kilometres, stopped n 50 communities and involved thousands of Australians along the way. “The reception has been quite incredible,” Ms Hosch said. “We have been welcomed so generously into diverse communities across the country—including local Aboriginal groups, farmers, businesses, councils, community groups and schools. People want to know about this, and we’re glad we can get the message out there.” Recognise campaign director Tim Gartrell said it was important to keep building public awareness at a local level. “We need more and more Australians to devote themselves to this cause over the next few years if we are to achieve this great act of unity for our nation,” he said. “Now is the time for people to get actively involved in this quest, so that we can ensure a vast people’s movement will carry this to the day of a referendum.” More than 150,000 Australians are supporters of the recognition movement.

Investing in our health workforce for a better state of health.
The Queensland Government is committed to looking after our health workforce. That’s why we’ve invested $1.35 billion in pay-rises for Queensland Health employees over the next 3 years. This includes a 6% increase for nurses and midwives since April last year, with a further 3% next year making a total of $592 million. A 2.5% increase for medical officers, meaning an extra $300 million invested across the workforce. And a 3% increase for employees under the Queensland Public Health Sector Certified Agreement 2011, totalling a further $466 million. We’re committed to rewarding the people who help us to deliver a better state of health. Year 8 student awarded for community partnership idea By Giembra Busmer
WES TER N C ap e C ollege (WCC) Year 8 student Katelyn McCahon was this week announced as a $5000 NAB Schools First Student winner for her community partnership idea. Katelyn won the $5000 award and Apple iPad to help kick-start her partnership idea, which is to increase student awareness about natural disasters and emergencies, and how to cope with them. Katelyn would like to see Weipa State Emergency Services (SES) teach students at her school how to develop disaster management and planning skills. The students would benefit from a greater understanding of the dangers posed by natural disasters and would be better equipped to deal with crisis situations. “I thought it would be a good idea for the Western Cape College and the Weipa SES to embrace each others ideals and help support one another through a partnership program,” Katelyn told the Western Cape Bulletin. “I would like to see the Weipa SES come to the school to educate students about what to do in a time of crisis and the school can in turn assist the SES with funding.” Katelyn was one of 10 NAB Schools First Student winners nationwide awards to recognise and celebrate outstanding schoolcommunity partnerships from around the country. NAB Schools First is a partnership which was founded in 2009 between NAB, the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and Katelyn was one of 10 winners nationwide in this year’s awards. Rebecca Kotow, Head of Education – Corporate Responsibility at NAB, says the school and community at large should be incredibly proud of Katelyn.

“We received a huge number of entries from students nationwide, and the incredibly high calibre was immediately evident to our judges,” she said. “Katelyn is clearly an exemplary student who has not only identified a need for students within her school, but she’s gone the extra step and submitted a polished and professional application. We are truly excited to see her school-community partnership idea now get off the ground. Our team looks forward to offering any further support we can so her idea is realised to its full potential,” she said. WCC principal Leon Proud complimented Katelyn on her partnership idea, saying it was a fantastic achievement. “We have around 340 students in our school and for a Year 8 student to come up with such a brilliant community initiative is something very special,” Mr Proud said. “The school won a NAB Schools First award in 2009 for

our partnership with Rio Tinto, but for Katelyn to have achieved this as an individual is to be commended, and an example to our students and teachers to think outside ourselves.” Weipa SES Local Controller Trevor Snodgrass said he thought Katelyn’s community partnership idea was fantastic. “This program will provide the local SES with an opportunity to get the safety message to people through their children,” he said. “More often than not, as adults, we become complacent and by reinforcing the idea of preparation to students at the WCC hopefully the message will get through to their parents. “The community partnership will also help bring more awareness of what it is the SES does and hopefully encourage participation.” Katelyn and an adult representative will be part of a national NAB Schools First forum and workshop planned for winners at the end of the year, to be held in Melbourne.

Election clear choice: Entsch LEICHHARDT MP Warren Entsch has welcomed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s announcement that the Federal Election will be held on Saturday, September 7. “This election is a choice between the Coalition’s plan for a strong, prosperous economy and a safe and secure Australia, or Labor’s record of chaos, dysfunction, debt, deficit and more taxes,” Mr Entsch said. “It’s also a choice between a candidate who has a lot of experience and a track record of delivering for the Far North, against one whose sole focus to date has been promoting Kevin Rudd, selling the party line and attacking Campbell Newman on state government policies. “At the end of the day, people want a candidate who will represent Leichhardt and deliver positive outcomes for our region – and I’m proud of my record.”
Mr Entsch said the Coalition had already released a raft of policies as part of the Real Solutions Plan. “We’ve seen the 2030 Vision for Northern Australia, which will develop Northern Australia and deliver more investment, infrastructure, services and jobs. “We embrace the Far North because we recognise the true potential for our economy, Mr Entsch said. “We’ll reduce the cost of living by scrapping the Carbon Tax and the Mining Tax, and by ensuring that governments live within their means and only spend the money they have. “The Coalition’s Operation Sovereign Borders policy will stop the boats with a militaryled response to combat people smuggling. “Our policy will save lives at sea, fix Labor’s horrendous failures and ensure our borders are strong.”
Johanna Kloot (Greens).
Frank Miles (Family First Party)
Billy Gordon campaigns on the Western Cape THE recently announced $210 million on roads and infrastructure on Cape York is not the last word on development in the region if Labor candidate for Leichhardt, Billy Gordon, has his way. Mr Gordon will be in Weipa, Old Mapoon and Napranum today and tomorrow, August 14 and 15, as part of his first campaign tour of the Leichhardt electorate. “I want to talk to Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, Weipa Town Authority and Old Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council to discuss future opportunities for development, and I will be catching up with members of the community on Wednesday night,” he said. Mr Gordon said Labor had the runs on the board with its recent $210 million
investment in the Cape. “The Mapoon to Weipa road is one of the many projects included in this program, “ he said. “The National Broadband Network and the Plan For Better Schools are two major Labor reforms that have the potential to underpin the region’s future economic development. “But that doesn’t mean I will be resting on my laurels if I am elected,” Mr Gordon said. “I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands dirty to make sure Leichhardt gets the representation it deserves.” Mr Gordon said he was looking forward to forging good relationships with councils and development organisations to help keep Cape York on the move.

FEDERAL ELECTION – September 7, 2013
KAP candidate is listening to the people of Leichhardt GeorGe ryan has been out and about listening to the people in Leichhardt since his KAP candidacy was announced last week. “People are really frustrated with the two-party system with all their bickering and mud-slinging. “Politics should be about the interests of all the people of Australia, not just powerful interests” said George Ryan George and his wife Miranda run almost 4000 head of cattle on three properties across the region. After two terms on the Etheridge Shire Council, George is passionate about making a difference in the seat of Leichhardt that is the neighbouring electorate to the seat of Kennedy, held by Bob Katter since 1993. “North Queensland desperately needs change to survive, and the prospect of getting more of the same from this ridiculous two-party system concerns me greatly,” Mr Ryan said. Mr Ryan attended the Mt Carbine Rodeo last Saturday night, and found locals were concerned about the threats to their Australian way of life. Over the coming weeks, Mr Ryan will fly his small plane into many of the Cape York and Torres Strait communities, as well as listening to people in larger centres like Cairns, Kuranda, Port Douglas, Mossman and Cooktown. “There is some deep rooted dis-enchantment out there. We need a stronger voice that stands up for the unique needs of our diverse northern region, and the Katter party allows me the freedom to do just that. “I will listen to, and fearlessly represent the interests of the people of Leichhardt,” he said. Mr Ryan’s policies include upgrades to the Bruce and Hann Highways, the Peninsula Development Road, defence, security and economic development targeted at jobs creation.
Shining the spotlight on rural and remote health The National rural health Alliance has published its 2013 election Charter to ensure a strong focus on rural and remote health in the coming federal election campaign. The Election Charter outlines seven domains in which both continued and new action is required in order to bring rural and remote health up to the standard commonly enjoyed in Australia’s cities. There should be a focus on local design and management of health services so that what is provided meets local needs and circumstances. An integrated rural training pathway for health professionals - as proposed in the recent report on health workforce programs - can improve the national distribution of health workers so that people in rural areas get a fair go. The major reforms in disability and aged reform, which seem to have bipartisan support, must be implemented with the voices of rural people ringing in the managers’ ears and with sufficient flexibility to fit well with rural and remote circumstances. Governments must provide strong support for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector’s Close the Gap work. Smarter investment in rural schooling can play a big part in improving
Come in and check out our new gaming room!
incomes and health literacy - thus improving the effectiveness of rural health promotion and resulting in direct health benefits. Finally, continued strong investment in fixed and mobile telephony will be a boon to families, businesses and health services in rural and remote areas. And rural regions can also take advantage of the economic opportunities available as the result of climate change. The Alliance will publish and regularly update an Election Scorecard on its website, rating the parties on the basis of their policies relating to the seven domains of the Election Charter. One in three Australians live outside the major cities and there is no justification for them having lower average life expectancy than people in major cities. Governments need to support rural and remote communities to give the people in these areas health and wellbeing that are as good as those of their city cousins. Successive Australian Governments have made great investments in rural and remote health over the past two decades and now is the time to consolidate these improvements. The Election Charter and other details of the Alliance’s pre-election activity are at www.ruralhealth.org. au

Cyclone shelter issues closer to resolution The date for the official opening of the new cyclone shelter/ multi-sports complex continues to be a vexed question for both the State government and the Weipa Town Authority (WTA). To say the WTA is frustrated is an understatement. We have been in lengthy discussion with government since the completion of construction just after the wet season. We had hoped to have had community participation in a range of indoor sports at the centre well before this. Clearly, it has been the insistence by government that Weipa should be treated differently to all other places where new centres were developed that has held up the ‘hand-over’. To explain briefly: our cyclone shelter, along with nine others in regional centres, were built by the former Labor government in partnership with a government in the United Arab Emarites. All other centres have been afforded annual ongoing funding to maintain the centres’ quite complicated integrity as a cyclone shelter. From the outset the government has held the view that WTA should ‘foot’ this annual bill of around $400,000 meaning the rate payers
of Weipa. This has been an unacceptable point of negotiation, and we have taken the WTA standpoint directly to the Premier, relevant Ministers and bureaucrats. Following a recent meeting with the Director General of Public Works and his Deputy we believe we have never been closer to a resolution. The WTA has insisted throughout that we and the community should not be treated any differently than other Queenslanders. The penny may have finally dropped for the government – “what is fair and equitable for the Weipa community”. We are hoping that it can be resolved very soon so that we can recruit a centre manager and get underway with indoor netball, cricket, s o c c e r, b a s k e t b a l l , volley ball and other activities. We would also like to stage the the Inaugural Annual Weipa Sports Awards at the centre on Friday the November 15 once the leasing arrangements for the centre are finalised. I sincerely hope the issue can be resolved in the coming weeks so that this multi-million dollar facility can be used by the community, and more importantly be operational for the next cyclone season.
Queensland hearts at risk QueenSlAnderS are more likely to smoke, be overweight or obese and less likely to exercise regularly than the average Australian according to Australian health Survey data released last week. The Heart Foundation’s Health Director, Rachelle Foreman, said the results were a major concern as it showed Queenslanders were leaving themselves at risk of developing heart disease. “Eighty per cent of heart disease is preventable. If you are overweight or obese, smoke or do not exercise regularly your risk of developing heart disease greatly increases,” Ms Foreman said. The survey also shows that around 30 per cent of Queenslanders have high cholesterol, and nearly one in five Queenslanders have high blood pressure.
For all your refrigerated, dry and heavy haulage needs Issues surrounding the operational costs of the yet unopened cyclone shelter are closer to resolution, according to WTA chairman Peter McCulkin.

Market update - The big picture After a stellar 2012/13 financial year on the ASX 200, July backed up with a gain of more than 5% the average gain the ASX 200 usually gets over a 12-month period. So is it too much too quickly? We don’t think so as the market was recovering from having been oversold in mid-2012 on fears that the European debt crisis would turn into a GFC-sized problem. China defied many sceptics during July by posting a GDP growth rate of 7.5%, bang on the government’s target. And to strengthen that read, its premier came out and asserted that 7% is the floor for growth. That statement will not stop entrenched sceptics from continuing to look for any signs of negativity - it is the way the media works. Iron ore prices climbed during July from $115 a tonne to over $130. The US economy is at an interesting point in its growth cycle. After a very strong and promising start to 2013, the economy is a little softer on the back of government expenditure cuts following the so-called ‘sequester’. Jobs data at the start of the month were just short of what is needed on a continued basis to cut back unemployment. At home, the predictability of our future is less certain with the rise in popularity of the Labor party under the Leadership of Kevin Rudd. The worst thing that can happen to Australia is to have another three years of a minority government with independents and Greens getting

more than their fair share. Hopefully, one of the parties will come out with a compelling set of policies to produce a decisive victory. Our dollar fell by 2.6% over July and around 13% for the year-todate. A lower dollar should provide better conditions for local industry and it certainly needs it. The Governor of the Reserve Bank made his feelings known about the dollar and it fell about 1.5 cents straight after his speech this last week. Prime Minister Abe just got a massive majority in the Japan elections and they are looking to a much brighter future after a very long time languishing in a deflationary environment. First re-read Matthew Ch 27 vs 45-51; the moment that Jesus died the temple veil was torn in two from top to bottom, a powerful sign that ordinary people can now go boldly to the throne of grace, as there is no longer a need for continuous animal sacrifices or the High Priest that carried out those duties. Hebrews Ch 10 vs 9-12 points this out; “Then he (Jesus) said, “Here I am, O God, to do your will. So God does away with all the

old sacrifices and put the sacrifice of Jesus in their place. Because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do, we are all purified from sin by the offering that he made of his own body once and for all. In the heavenly realm of God, Jesus Christ is now our High Priest forever and he does not have to present himself as a sacrifice over and over, as that one time was enough. (Hebrews Ch 5 v 6). “Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a
great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God- Jesus, the Son of God. Our High Priest is one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. Let us have confidence then, then, and approach God’s throne, were there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it”. See how God loves us. Rev Michael Connolly

AFL wrap-up with Dallas SEVEN teams are now booked in for finals but within them cracks are appearing all over the place! The top sides continue their rollercoaster form over the last few weeks. Geelong and the Hawks are back in form and on top of the table. Now the tier below them has hit a rough patch. The Swans and Essendon have lost and look to be struggling for form last week. Essendon have dropped well down the eight while Collingwood and Richmond, both victorious on the weekend, have cemented finals berths. Richmond’s first finals since 2001! Port are hanging in there in eighth largely due to the failure of Carlton to push them. The Blues needed to beat the Bulldogs and will be ruing their performance and subsequent loss against the lowly Dogs. Port are now the only team who can lose their finals spot in the last three weeks. Mathematically, the five teams below the eight can still make it, but Carlton and West Coast are the best placed of these. North and the Lions losing on the weekend has all but ended their chances unless Essendon gets a points penalty in the impending announcement of the results of the drugs scandal. A miracle and higher percentage are all that the three teams on 32 points can hope for to make finals. Last week’s results saw the Hawks wipe out St Kilda while Richmond cruised home against the Lions. Geelong won a high scoring affair over Port. North were disappointing going down to Adelaide. Gary Ablett’s 250th game was celebrated with a hard fought Suns win over the Demons. The Dogs upset Carlton and Collingwood upset the Swans in Sydney. Essendon may be feeling the pressure of a tumultuous season with a bad loss to West Coast in Melbourne. Freo powered on smashing GWS. This week starts with the blockbuster at the “G” between Hawthorn and Collingwood. Richmond can pretty much end Carlton’s season on Saturday and Port need to beat the Suns in Adelaide to keep in front of the pack chasing their finals spot. Essendon need to find form against North and the Lions should eat up the Giants. West Coast could give Geelong a run for their money in the west while fellow West Aussies Freo should destroy the Demons. Sydney will hope to regather momentum against the Saints. The Bulldogs and Adelaide could put on a good competitive show. My tips- Hawthorn, Richmond, Port Adelaide, North Melbourne, Brisbane, Geelong, Fremantle, Sydney and Adelaide. Three weeks to go! That’s the wrap! Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Karl BOTTOM teams perform, as finals near! The round kicked off on Friday night with the title contenders the Storm and the Rabbitohs battling it out with the Storm proving too strong in the end. Then the Eels beat the struggling Tigers in an effort to avoid the wooden spoon. Saturday had some entertaining games with the Roosters narrowly winning over the Raiders which gave the Roosters outright top of the ladder. Then the Knights stunned the Sharks with a last gasp try which will keep their finals hopes alive. Super Sunday started with a strong contest between the Sea Eagles and the Warriors, with the Sea Eagles getting the win. Then the Broncos beat the Dragons in a close encounter, and the red hot Cowboys were too strong for the Panthers. Monday night’s match was between the Bulldogs and the Titans with the Titans recording their first ever win over the Bulldogs in Sydney. This has moved the Titans into the heavily congested top eight. With the Titans having a tough run home in the last of the home and away which includes the Roosters and Storm, we will see if they have what it takes to challenge into the finals. Looking into Round 23, on Friday night we have the Broncos and the Eel’s playing, then the Rabbitohs take on the Sea Eagles. Super Saturday brings us three games, with the Raiders taking on the Bulldogs, the Cowboys take on their Queensland counterparts the Titans and the Dragons look for a win over the Sharks. On Sunday the in-form Knights play the ever- consistent Storm, and the Warriors go to battle with the Panthers. Monday night’s game brings the Round to a close with the Tigers going head to head with the Roosters. Karl’s Tips: Broncos, Sea Eagles, Raiders, Cowboys, Sharks, Storm, Warriors and Roosters. Yours in footy, Karl

Dog of the month C.A.P.S.
Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com from page 1 On the reefs around Pera the big Tuskers are still on the prowl and on the northern reefs it has been hit and miss, with mainly small fish coming in. I found a patch of Red Throat Emperor but they were just under legal size. There was a report that there are a few Tuskers up off the reefs near Duyfken Point but it is a long way home if the breeze gets up from the east to south-east. There are a couple of boats from the Billfish club chasing Sails and Marlin but I haven’t heard from them yet. Stewart Mckinnon and big Rob from Sea Swift had a quick session up the Mission River, armed with a bucket of livies they went in search for some Barra. The only Barra they hooked they dropped but did get a consolation prize of some tasty Grunter. Mick Dacey and Paul Cook fished under the Mission River Bridge on Friday night for a good haul of Blue Salmon up to 90cm. There was a report from the freshwater section of the Wenlock that it is fishing very well for large Saratoga, Barra and big Sooty Grunter. In the Hey there are still Barra and Grunter taking baits with Evans Landing wharf giving up a few fish for the diehards, with a nice Trout taken there the other day. There are big schools of Bream patrolling the edges of gutters and hiding under the mangrove overhangs so if you come down in hook size and use pieces of Prawn, it should get you a feed. I almost forgot to mention, with all that plankton out there I spotted a few feeding Manta Rays and they in turn were holding a few Cobia and Trevally, so keep your eyes peeled while you are travelling and you may score a bonus... ‘Til next week, here’s hoping for smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

Tight competition in 2013 Men’s Weipa Bauxite Classic THE annual Men’s Weipa Bauxite Classic Rinks was held last weekend and with a prize pool of $25,000 there were some very competitive games played over the two days. Twenty eight teams from all over Queensland, as well as Victoria and NSW, were vying for the prize money, with 112 players enjoying the tightly contested competition. Local team Weipa Werewolves, skipped by Martin Bray, almost knocked over last year’s champions, only going down in the last end. All six local teams played respectfully. At the end of play on day one only five teams were undefeated and eight teams had two wins. First up on day two overnight second-placed team The Hardware Men played fourth-placed Redoak Bulls 1, resulting in a 15-all draw, almost putting them out of the running. Overnight leaders Townsville Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT)
defeated sixth-placed Kegs on Legs to retain first position. TMNT went on to play secondplaced The Mighty Blues – both of these teams have finished in first or second place in the last few years of the Weipa Bauxite Classic, but had never faced each other on the green before so it was a bit of a grudge match. After a very tight tussle and the lead changing with every win, the Blues just got over the line, leaving them as the only undefeated team. Congratulations to the Mighty Blues, all the top 10 teams and the round winners. The Weipa Bowls Club match committee would like to thank the following for their sponsorship and continuous support: QCCU, umpire (David Egan), bar staff, kitchen staff, greenkeepers, scorers, helpers, subs and all our supporters. A special thank you to our major sponsors Catherine and John Kennedy from Goodline.

south the run down was fairly comfortable, travelling at around 20 knots. With so many boats out you would think you would see a few, but I only saw a handful on the main reefs. Jason Owens fishing in the 30-metre line raised three Billfish to land a nice Sailfish out of the three sighted – this
was a good effort, considering he was fishing by himself. There are huge blooms of plankton up and down the coast which in turn are attracting the bait fish, which bring in the predators. I had a troll on some of the bait balls, not just the schools such as the Mackerel and other predators, to land one
Spaniard, a couple of School Mackerel and a small Oceanic Whaler that took a liking to my Rapala deep diver. All the fish we hit on the troll fell to the deep diving lure and the two metre Halco Laser Pro 190s went untouched. continued page 21
