Air crash rescue exercise LOCAL emergency and health services were put to the test last Tuesday when Queensland Ambulance, State Emergency Services, Weipa Police, Rural Fire Brigade, Weipa Health Services, Weipa Airport and Rio Tinto Fire and Rescue teamed up to participate in a simulated air crash rescue near the Weipa airport. The practical exercise in co-operation and knowledge exchange, co-ordinated by Aerodrome Management Services (AMS), is held once every two years, with desktop exercises completed every other year. Volunteer “casualties” were positioned on a bus

which was used to simulate the fuselage of a plane, and a dual-cab ute was used to represent the cockpit of the plane. Once fires were extinguished air crash “casualties” were rescued from the plane and cockpit, and a number of passengers were located in the surrounding bush. All were transported to a triage area set up a safe distance from the crash site where they were given comfort and medical treatment by the attending services. Weipa SES Local Controller Trevor Snodgrass said the exercise had gone well and a number of shortcomings had been identified which would be addressed.

T H E t e a m a t We i p a Woolworths have something to celebrate. Out of more than 900 Woolies stores Australiawide, and 223 in Queensland alone the Weipa store has been selected as the 2013 Queensland Store of the Year. Woolworths stores are judged on several criteria, mostly from the business end of things, but most importantly they are judged on what they give back to the community, their staff engagement and customer satisfaction. Despite being one of the most remote stores in Australia, and facing significant adversity as a consequence of their location, the local team have focused on supporting local community groups and events. Store manager Jenny Everist said she was passionate about giving back to the community and was thrilled the Weipa staff had been so enthusiastic with their support. “There are so many chal-

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.
A QUICK update on the election, so you won’t have to bother with the wall-to-wall talking heads who have taken over the telly. Here are the latest headlines: Weasel Rudd has been touring the country scattering largesse in the form of promissory notes - vote for me and you will receive by return post a new hospital/school/highway/ broadband or negotiable asset
of your choice. When he is not doing that, he is being rude to his coalition opponents. Not surprisingly, Tony Ears is doing just the same, except he is being rude about the Weasel. His minders are still keeping him in check and only allowing him to appear in front of selected party audiences. Both sides are firm believers in the Peter-Paul Principle. That is, governments who rob Peter to pay Paul, can always depend on the support of Paul. For example, Tony is introducing a paid parental leave scheme that guarantees mothers six months paid leave. So if you have a secure, well-paid job with a salary, you might get $75,000

On the other hand, if you are normal for up here and struggle along doing three casual jobs to make ends meet, you are probably better off going onto Centrelink. But then, you were not going to vote for Tony anyway. The Scary Immigrant Question has resolved itself into a competition between the two parties over who has the most unpleasant island prison for asylum seekers, and it is a toss-up who is winning. The major parties are not quaking in their boots. Clive Palmer favours allowing asylum seekers to fly in (good for Qantas, bad for the people smugglers), and then settling their claims over a few hours at the airport. It should save a few zillion dollars, and the island prisons can be turned into holiday camps. Beavering away busily in the background, Rupert Murdoch’s ‘It’s-my-media-and-I-can-dowhat-I-like-with-it’ Party is looking likely to succeed in its goal of protecting Foxtel from the NBN. The papers and Fox News say we want that, so it must be true. One clear winner, at least.

Cape York’s first JCU student dentist no stranger to Weipa Cape York Hospital and Health Service’s first student from James Cook University’s new School of Dentistry is no stranger to Weipa. In fact, it’s his home . . . Jonathon aspinall, 22, moved to Weipa with his parents when he was just four years old and has lived there ever since. He is now in the fifth and final year of his dental studies at James Cook University (JCU) and is currently doing a 16-week practical rotation at the Weipa Integrated Health Service (HIS) dental clinic. When he graduates at the end of the year, he and his classmates will be the first crop of qualified dentists from the new JCU dental school which took its first students in 2009. The purpose-built School of Dentistry is located in Cairns at the Smithfield campus of JCU and is one of only three dental schools in Australia outside of a capital city. As a long-time Weipa resident, Mr Aspinall said he was keen to work in rural and remote areas. “My first priority when I graduate in December is to find a job in the first place,’’ he said. “But ultimately, I would like to work in a rural and remote area. “I wouldn’t mind coming back to Weipa to work but that would depend first on my gaining sufficient experience to be able to work alone in a rural and remote area and secondly on a vacancy becoming available.’’ Weipa-based Cape York HHS Principal Dentist Shane Hearps said the HHS was proud to be involved with JCU in helping to train the dentists of the future. Mr Hearps said Mr Aspinall would be able to treat eligible public clients at the Weipa dental clinic under his supervision during the 16-week rotation. “Jonathon will leave Weipa with quite a lot of practical experience under his belt working in the public oral health sector and being exposed to a range of oral health issues,’’ he said. Mr Hearps said many local residents were not aware of the range of public and private oral health services available in their community.

“At the public dental clinic at the Weipa IHS, we are able to see all eligible clients within the recommended waiting times for each category of treatment,’’ he said. “There is currently no waiting list for public patients. “As I have a right of private practice, I can also see patients who are not eligible for public dental services through the private practice side of the dental clinic. “And there is also a private visiting dental service that comes to Weipa from Cairns every fortnight and operates out of their own dental surgery at Rocky Point.’’ Mr Hearps said the Weipa IHS dental clinic serviced the communities of Weipa and Napranum, as well as providing outreach services to various other parts of the Cape, including Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale and Wujal Wujal. “Overall, the Cape York HHS has three teams of dentists and oral health workers based at Weipa, Cooktown and Cairns,’’ Mr Hearps said. “These teams comprise three
dentists, two dental therapists, six dental assistants, a health worker and a trainee dental assistant. “Between us, we provide outreach services to all the other Cape York communities, as well as school-based oral health services for the whole region.’’ Mr Hearps said access to oral health care contributed to better outcomes in general health. “Nevertheless, the delivery of good and timely oral health services is only one part of the story,’’ he said. “Individuals also must play their part by taking responsibility for looking after their teeth. “Prevention is always better than the cure. “A healthy diet, good oral hygiene and not smoking can prevent dental problems from arising in the first place. “If people do not take better care of their teeth, the resultant increased demand for free public dental services may well stretch the capacity to supply that service to the extent required.’’ Mr Hearps said Queensland Health, through the various hospital and health services,
provided the most extensive public dental health service in Australia. And unlike every other state except New South Wales, there are no fees for public sector dentistry in Queensland. The services are provided free of charge to eligible adults in community dental clinics and to children in school clinics or at community clinics. All children are eligible to receive public oral health services. Adults who are eligible to receive services from the public oral health services are required to be a holder of any of the following cards: • Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink • Health Care Card • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card • Queensland Seniors Card. Appointments for both public and private oral health services at the Weipa IHS public and private practice dental clinic can be made by phoning 4082 3718.

FREIGHT DONATION: Weipa SES Local Controller Trevor Snodgrass with Sea Swift staff, alongside the new Weipa SES truck ready for loading onto the Sea Swift barge.
WEIPA State Emergency Service unit received a welcome funding boost last week thanks to Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Community Donation and Partnership Program. Weipa SES Local Controller Trevor Snodgrass, accompanied by Emergency Management Queensland Northern Region area director Peter Rinaudo, was presented with a $5000 cheque by RTA Weipa general manager operations Gareth Manderson who said he was delighted to be making the contribution. “It’s a pleasure to be able to assist such a hard-working group who do so much for our local community,” Mr Manderson said. Mr Snodgrass said the donation would be put towards the purchase and fitting of a service body for the Weipa SES unit’s new rescue truck.
“It will take around six weeks for the new body to be fitted in Brisbane and the total cost will be around $61,000 which has all been locally fundraised,” Mr Snodgrass said. “And Sea Swift is shipping the truck to and from Cairns for us at no charge.” “The Weipa community as a whole has always been very supportive of us and are always very generous. “I’d also like to thank our local SES members, who are very active, and it’s through their efforts that we are able to fundraise successfully and continue to provide an effective service,” Mr Snodgrass said. Mr Rinaudo told the Western Cape Bulletin that he believed the people of Weipa supported the local SES in a greater capacity than any other SES group in the Northern Area.

New member for Weipa SES THE Weipa State Emergency Service group’s newest member is none other than Emergency Management Queensland Northern Region area director, Peter Rinaudo who was in Weipa last week as an observer at the air crash rescue operation at the Weipa airport. “My role in EMG is to support the Weipa Disaster Mangement Group on their disaster management plan and operations, and also to support the Weipa SES organise their training and equipment,” Mr Rinaudo said. Although based in Cairns Mr Rinaudo said he was proud to become a part of the Weipa SES and would be undertaking the same training as other members of the unit. Bursary continues Thancoupie’s work THE inaugural Thancoupie Bursary Fund opened to receive applications on August 1, 2013. Like the design on the bursary logo, Thancoupie’s inspiring image of the bird of peace, the emu, protecting eggs and chicks, the Thancoupie Bursary has been set up to support young Aboriginal artists and aspiring Aboriginal arts-workers from the Western Cape York Peninsula. By enabling recipients to study successfully outside their own community, the bursary honours the memory, achievements and legacy of Thancoupie, continuing her work supporting youth and enriching culture. Thancoupie’s approach to her art practice was always cultural, encompassing the whole of life and its meaning, the universe, and the interconnectedness of all living things. In this approach, all arts were as one, whether caring for land in the bush in creative ways, or expressing culture in what may be regarded as contemporary art. The bursary began following

Thancoupie’s vision to create a pathway for the youth of her community and region. Beginning with a modest sum left in Thancoupie’s will, the board of directors have worked to raise further monies, establishing a Bursary which is hoped will be perpetual. Ms Leneen Forde AC has been announced as the Patron of the Thancoupie Bursary Fund. Ms Forde is a member of numerous boards and committees including the National Committee on Human Rights Education. Former Governor of the State of Queensland, was awarded various honours including Queenslander of the Year (1991), Companion of the Order of Australia (1992), recipient of the Centenary Medal (2003) and a Queensland Greats Award winner (2007). Ms Forde continues to be actively involved in building a better future for indigenous youth and serving her community as current Chancellor of Griffith University. environmental and economic viability of the sector,” Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said. Mr McVeigh said recreational fishing provided an important economic benefit for local businesses, from bait and tackle stores to campsites and grocery stores. “Building on the 2010 recreational fishing survey, this new survey will collect more regionally focused information on where and how people fish, what they catch and the type of fishing experiences they want,” he said. “We will be surveying the whole state, with balanced representation from 15 regions. “Our goal is to understand not just the fish species caught, but also the way we fish, so we can better tailor our fisheries management. The telephone-diary survey will collect information regularly from fishers for 12 months, and many other recreational fishers will be able to contribute through other monitoring programs at key locations. “Importantly, the results will be directly comparable to previous surveys, providing a vital time series on recreational fishing in Queensland and helping to make robust assessments of our fisheries,” Dr Webley said

JAI Cummings, of Mapoon descent, was one of the stars at Australia’s biggest Cultural Fest held at Townsville’s Strand Park from August 14 to 18. Mr Cummings was a leading member of the popular Aboriginal Wulgurukaba Walkabouts dancers as he played the didgeridoo on centre stage. Wulgurukaba Walkabouts received a standing ovation when they performed before a massive crowd at the 19th annual Cultural Fest. “I want to say hello to all my family and friends on Cape York,” Mr Cummings said. An estimated 70,000 men, women and children were there from all parts of north and far north Queensland. There were 30 stalls in the International Food Court and 60 cultural entertainment groups delighted audiences. Before Wulgurukaba Walkabouts performed under one of three covered areas Professor Gracelyn Smallwood welcomed guests to country. This year three stages were used including the main one with seating for 1000, a smaller one in the Global Village and a third on the beach near the sea where lots of activities for children took place. In the Global Village were 70 craft displays including numerous showcasing Indigenous material and culture.

ON Wednesday, September 4 children from the Napranum Early Childhood Centre, along with community members will march around the community to promote awareness for child protection. The theme this year is “Play Your Part”. The march will start at 10am from the Napranum Early Childhood Centre (preschool) and continue through the community. Light refreshments will be provided at the centre after the march with activities to ensure a fun day for everyone, followed by a sausage sizzle. Before lunch 200 white helium filled balloons will be released to send a message of support for children and adults who have been victims of child abuse. Following the balloon release a small presentation will be held to acknowledge those that have worked tirelessly to prevent child abuse from happening.
Crackdown on illegal crabbing QUEENSLAND recreational crabbers are being warned to crab responsibly and to show respect for fellow crabbers after a spate of unlawful crabbing practices. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officer Lyndon Peddell said crab pot interference and other illegal crabbing practices were major compliance issues for the patrol. “There has been an increase in the number
of complaints involving people allegedly removing crabs from pots. “It’s obvious that some fishers are just not getting the message,” he said. “Interfering with crabbing apparatus that are not your own is a serious offence and you will be caught. “Anyone caught unlawfully interfering with crab apparatus will face an on-thespot fine of $1100 or
maximum penalties up to $55,000. “That’s a lot more expensive than the cost of buying a crab from your local seafood store. “Stealing crabs or crab pots is a criminal offence, so those caught will also be referred to the police for investigation,” he said. Mr Peddell said people should be aware of all current crabbing rules including size and possession limits
as well as crab pot regulations before hitting the water. “QBFP rely on the support of the public to help protect our fishing resources. People who suspect illegal crabbing are urged to do the right thing and report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116,” Mr Peddell said. For more information on responsible crabbing, visit www. fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

The others Mayors were Northern Peninsula Shire Regional Council’s Bernard Charlie, Mornington Island Shire Council’s Bradley Wilson, Charters Towers Regional’s Cr Frank Beveridge, Sunshine Coast’s Cr Mark Jamieson, Paroo Shire Council’s Lindsay Godfrey, and Goondiwindi Regional Council Cr Graeme Scheu. The Western Cape Bulletin was also invited, and at first most went to the Palm Shire Council offices where they were greeted by Cr Lacey.

Cr Holness and the Mayors were guests at a welcoming ceremony at the local Bwgcolman State Primary School. Each Mayor spoke to the students, many of whom have descendants in Cape York. “Kowanyama has a population of around 1400 and has three main tribal groups and our main industry is cattle,” Cr Holness said. They were then taken on a tour of Palm Island with stops at the local cement-making factory, one of the dams, the construction camp accommodation complex, the new sub-division where 40 houses will be built, the renovated motel and
then to the Coolgaree Sports Bar and Grill for lunch. While enjoying lunch the Mayors looked over to the Reel Women Jetty where a huge new pontoon will soon be built. All the Mayors signed a plate for chef Hira Lai Shirestha and then it was time to leave. “I have really enjoyed my visit to Palm Island which is a beautiful place,” Cr Holness said. Cr Holness also saw Palm Shire CEO Ross Norman who had been the CEO at Mapoon for some years. Cr Lacey said it was a great chance to let the visiting Mayors see his beautiful paradise.

Sodexo donate prizemoney back to Weipa community Weipa Community Care association’s Women’s Shelter received a funding boost this week following a generous donation by Sodexo Weipa. Sodexo recently announced the winners of their Star Awards, which recognises individuals and sites’ distinguished achievements or outstanding performances, and the Weipa Sodexo site was awarded Queensland and Northern Territory “Best of the Best” honours. As part of their award the site received $3000 cash to be distributed throughout the group in any way they chose. Senior project manager Sodexo Weipa Peter Ernst said he decided to put the decision of how to spend the money to a vote among his staff. “We discussed the possibility of buying picnic sets or ‘branded’ chairs but when we put it to a vote the clear majority of staff wanted to use the money to help the Weipa community,” Mr Ernst said. “Although we have a number of local staff employed at the Weipa site there

are also those who work on a fly-in fly-out basis and it was pleasing to see so many of our people want to give back to this community.” After doing some research and discussing possible recipients with his staff it was decided the $3000 should be donated to Weipa Community Care Association. “As far as we could see the work these people do is all-encompassing and we wanted to see the money help the entire community,” Mr Ernst said. Weipa Community Care Association’s acting chief
executive officer Sam Forbes said the organisation was extremely grateful for the donation and would be putting the money towards work on the Women’s Shelter. “We have a couple of major projects on the go at the shelter, including installing air conditioners and fixing the bathroom, so this cash injection is really appreciated,” Ms Forbes said. “It was very generous of all the Sodexo staff to decide to donate their prizemoney and I would like to thank them all.”
If you want to give your super savings a boost by making personal contributions, one option to consider is using your pre-tax income. This is known as salary sacrificing and it can be a very effective way of growing your super balance, depending on your personal circumstances. Salary sacrificing into super can not only help you grow your super savings but it can also provide you with favourable tax outcomes. This is why salary sacrifice contributions are known as ‘concessional contributions’. The contributions you make into super with your pre-tax income are only taxed at a maximum rate of 15%. This gives your super a boost as, with less tax applied to your contributions, you have more money to invest than you would if you were investing outside super. The end result is the potential for a bigger retirement nest egg. The other key benefit of salary sacrifice is that it could reduce the amount of income tax you pay. This is because you only pay tax on your reduced salary, which may lower your marginal tax rate. A salary sacrifice strategy isn’t right for everyone. Generally speaking, you are most likely to benefit from salary sacrificing if you pay
a marginal tax rate of over 15%. For this reason, there is little benefit of salary sacrificing if you earn less than $37,000 per year. Another important consideration is whether you can afford to receive less salary each month. For this reason, a salary sacrifice strategy is ideally suited to people who are already receiving income from other sources beside their salary, such as rental income from an investment property or dividends from a share portfolio. Before deciding whether or not salary sacrifice is right for you, make sure you know all the rules and consider the different ways to contribute more to super before you dive in. For tips on how to set up a salary sacrifice arrangement with your employer visit the ATO’s MoneySmart website: https://www.moneysmart. gov.au/superannuation-and-retirement/howsuper-works/super-contributions/contributingextra-to-super#salary For more information on salary sacrificing or other financial services, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam. woodhouse@infocus.com.au. The Bandy Bandy snake THIS wild looking snake, not surprisingly goes by the name of the ‘Bandy Bandy’. It features at least 48 black and white bands around its body, features which readily distinguish it from all other Australian snakes. Bandy Bandys are active by night and feed almost exclusively on Blind Snakes, small burrowing reptiles that in turn prey on termites. This species is venomous, and medical assistance should be sought in the event of a bite as severe reactions have been recorded in the past. Fortunately the Bandy Bandy is usually inoffensive and throws coils of its body in the air to try to warn off predators or anything it sees as threatening. They are found in eastern and north eastern Australia as far west as the Gulf of Carpentaria and occur in a wide range of habitats from deserts

ening and yet deeply meaningful (symbolic) things that happened at the very moment of the Lord’s death. We will look at the four gospels for help. Now we already read of the curtain that separated God’s Presence from the ordinary people being torn in two and its meaning. As The Lord was dying a strange darkness
fell over the land. In the spiritual way of thinking this is showing the anger that God is putting on His Son for the sins of the world, past, present, and future. Because of those sins, for the first time in all eternity fellowship was broken between the Father and the Son! All for our sake! Praise God!

FEDERAL ELECTION – September 7, 2013
Early voting for 2013 federal election EARLY voting in this year’s federal election will commence on next week in Weipa for voters unable to vote on election day, Saturday, September 7. From Wednesday, August 28 eligible voters can cast an early vote in person at the Weipa QGAP Office, Central Avenye, or by applying for a postal vote. You are eligible for an early vote if on election day you’ll be outside your electorate; more than 8km from a polling place; approaching childbirth; seriously ill or caring for someone who is; or unable to attend a polling place due to religious beliefs, fear for personal safety, disability or work commitments. Early voting in person (also known as a pre-poll vote) will be available in Weipa on weekdays until Friday, September 6, from 9am to 4.30pm. Early
voting will not be available at the Weipa QGAP Office on weekends. Postal vote applications can be completed and submitted online to the AEC. If you are unable to go online, hardcopy forms are available from any AEC office or Australia Post outlet. Once the AEC processes your completed postal vote application, your ballot papers will be sent to you. If you are registered as a General Postal Voter you do not need to complete an application form as your ballot papers will be automatically sent to you. It is important to apply early for a postal vote to ensure there is ample time to deliver the ballot papers and for you to complete them by election day. For more information visit www.aec.gov.au
Labor announces Trade Training Centre for Weipa LABOR candidate for Leichhardt, Billy Gordon, said Far North Queensland needed more training and education opportunities – not less – to underpin our region’s drive towards economic diversification. “It’s a shame Tony Abbott’s Coalition plans to cut Trade Training Centres while the rest of Australia recognises the need for greater investment in training and education,” Mr Gordon said. Mr Gordon welcomed the announcement of $1.5 million in funding for a new Trade Training Centre for Western Cape College Weipa. “The Western Cape Trade Training Centre will include a new engineering and construction workshop and the purchase of equipment,” he said. “It will deliver qualifications to students in construction and engineering to address skills shortages in the trades of fitter and turner and plumber.”
Tony Abbott’s Coalition have said that they will cut Trade Training Centre funding if elected on September 7. “Queenslanders have already felt the full brunt of Campbell Newman’s cuts to TAFE, with $80 million pulled from the budget and up to 38 campuses on the chopping block,,” Mr Gordon said. “Mr Abbott has to find $70 billion in cuts and they’ve said they’ll cut Trade Training Centres which will means thousands of students won’t be able to access vocational training. “I was delighted that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd reaffirmed Labor’s commitment to Trade Training Centres when he was in Cairns last week. “Only Federal Labor’s Trade Training Centres will address skill shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries by equipping schools with the state-of-the-art industry standard facilities they need. Federal Labor has now an-

nounced funding of some $1.4 billion for more than 510 Trade Training Centres benefitting more than 1290 secondary schools across Australia. “Many of these schools are located in regional Australia,” Mr Gordon said. “Without training and education opportunities for our young people, our community’s economic future beyond the mining boom is at risk. “What thousands of young Australians need right now is a Federal Government to help them build their future, not knock it down.”
Letter to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Think carefully and vote for our future I AM calling on all voters in Leichhardt and Kennedy to think carefully before voting for Labor, Katter or for any of the independents on September 7. Between Rudd and Beattie, Queensland and in fact Australia now have the highest level of debt in living memory. Bob Katter is best mates with Rudd and has voted with Labor for years. He is a master at beating up political talk but has not achieved one significant thing for his electorate or Australia since deserting the LNP. The Katter party in Queensland consists of two other deserters who hardly ever turn up in parliament and have achieved nothing for their electorates.
We need a strong government with direction and a clear majority to get us out of this mess and secure the future of our country for our children. We need to kick Rudd and Beattie out of Queensland politics and take the control away from minor parties at the Federal level. When we get our Mareeba Shire back on January 1 and when you vote Noelene Ikin and Warren Entsch in at the Federal level we will enjoy unprecedented representation in Far North Queensland. We will have the strength, integrity and unity we deserve. Together we will get the Far North and West back on track. Think carefully and vote for our future. David Kempton Member for Cook

COUNTRY is coming to town this weekend with the 10th annual Weipa Bullride Rodeo and Cabaret to be held on Friday and Saturday nights and event organisers are hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before. The action-packed weekend kicks off on Friday night with the Rodeo Cabaret, sponsored by the Weipa Bowls Club. Weipa Bullride Association’s Steve Fairbrother there would be plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the fun at the family-friendly venue. “The grandstand seating has been set up so families can watch the entertainment from there if they don’t want to bring their own chairs.” And there will be plenty of entertainment at this year’s cabaret for both young and old, starting with kid’s dummy roping and needle in a haystack, best dressed cow pokes competitions for all ages and the best butts and husband dragging
competitions for adults. A mechanical bull shootout for the bigger cowboys will also be part of the entertainment on Friday night with the winner receiving a cash prize and a merchandise package. Nominations will be taken on the night. Young cow pokes can also enjoy the two jumping castles and the merry-go-round that will be at both the cabaret on Friday night and the bullride on Saturday. A parent’s booth, complete with boiled and sterile water, bottle warmers and a microwave oven will be set up again this year so children of all ages are catered for. “It is important to remember however that children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and that no unsealed drink containers are permitted at either the cabaret or bullride,” Steve said. “As there will be a licensed bar at both events no BYO is permitted.” Hot food stalls supplying
everything from fish and chips to steak burgers and hotdogs to curries will also be available on Friday and Saturday. Live entertainment of the music variety will be provided on both Friday and Saturday nights by Hamilton Island band Under the Wire who are guaranteed to keep toes tapping until late. Tickets to the Rodeo Cabaret are available from the Weipa Caravan Park. Admission is adults $20, children (6-17 years) $10, children five years and under free and family (two adults and two children 6-17 years) $50. Gates open at 6.30pm. At time of press almost all places in Saturday’s Bullride had been filled however as there are still a few available anyone interested in nominating can still do so by calling 0488 447 667. Saturday morning will kickoff with rodeo school from 10am at Andoom Oval rodeo grounds and Steve recommends
children and adults bucking out for the first time attend. “The rodeo school is free to attend and it’s probably a good idea to get a feel of what bullriding is all about before stepping into the ring,” Steve said. “We will have both the barrel and mechanical bull set up with experts on hand to give a few bullriding tips.” Gates open for the Weipa Bullride, sponsored by Goodline, this Saturday at 2.30pm and the bucking action starts at 3.30pm. Weipa Bullride provide all safety equipment and bull ropes for competitors for a $10 hire fee. “Not only will the action be sizzling in the arena but the weather is starting to warm up so don’t forget to bring your hats and sunscreen to the Bullride on Saturday afternoon,” Steve reminded patrons. A free bus service is being provided on both Friday and Saturday (see timetable below).

COMMUNITY Vote for your favourite Bullride shopfront CALENDAR
VOTING in the annual Weipa Bullride shopfront decoration has opened with three contenders up for the prize. Weipa Community Care Association (WCCA), Hibberd Library and Weipa Traders are the entrants this year and staff have gone to a lot of trouble to get the “country comes to town” feel in their windows. First time entrants WCCA have created their country display from items donated to their charity op shop and features stuffed farmyard animals, a giant Woody doll, a box of Bushell’s tea bags and an original “Squatter” board game. This is also the first year the Hibberd Library has thrown their Akubra into the Bullride shopfront competition ring with an impressive Aussie display. Library officer Fiona Langsdorf has enlisted the help of her Saturday morning craft session attendees and the
children have created bull masks and fingerpuppets to surround the rocking horse centrepiece. A collection of bullriding gear, including chaps, boots and helmets along with photographs, sashes and trophies from rodeos past is on display at Cape Kids Child Care centre. The items on display were provided by Tammy Tierney, whose family has been involved in the Weipa Bullride for many years. Weipa Traders have again put a great deal of time and effort into their display which includes rodeo-ring panels, saddles, ropes, chaps and Western attire atop hay bales and hessian. To vote for your favourite display go to the Western Cape Bulletin’s facebook page and “like” your choice. The winning shopfront will be announced at the Bullride this Saturday evening.

Celebrating 10 years of buckin’ out in Weipa CELEBRATING their 10year anniversary this weekend the annual Weipa Bullride Rodeo and Cabaret is ready to rock the rodeo grounds at the Andoom Oval. The event was first held at the Weipa Speedway in 2003 and was relocated to the Weipa Football Grounds in 2006, which proved to be a positive move for patrons and stock. “Being closer to town the crowd numbers increased dramatically when we moved to the footy grounds, plus there was an abundance of shade for the bucking stock to rest under,” Weipa Bullride Association’s Steve Fairbrother said. Since 2006 the Weipa Bullride committee has spent countless hours creating a rodeo special
events area at the Andoom Oval, installing new lighting, establishing grass and a watering system. In 2010 the committee decided to add an extra dimension to the Bullride and the “Country Comes To Town” weekend was born, with the addition of a cabaret night held the night prior to the rodeo. In 2011 all profits ($6000) from the Cabaret were donated to Cystic Fibrosis and in 2012 $5700 was donated to the Weipa Town Authority to help upgrade the rodeo special events oval. Donating to local clubs and charities has been high on the agenda for the Weipa Bullride since inception with Weipa Capability, the Rural Fire Brigade and the Weipa RSL Sub-Branch just a few of the recipients.

Footy fans urged to vote for Murgha in Queensland award NORTHERN Pride is calling on the people of Cape York to get behind Hezron Murgha and vote for the star fullback in the inaugural 2013 XXXX People’s Choice Award. This new addition to Queensland Rugby League’s (QRL) end-ofseason presentations was officially launched last Friday, and will complement the long-standing Courier-Mail Medal, with both awards to be presented at the QRL’s gala dinner on September 4 in Brisbane. Murgha, 27, has had a phenomenal season for the Pride in 2013, and has been justly rewarded for his form with a twoyear North Queensland Cowboys NRL contract. Rugby league fans will determine the XXXX People’s Choice Award winner, with each Intrust Super Cup club having nominated a player. “Hezzy’s a great role model for local players, especially local Indigenous players, and has shown the fantastic pathway that exists for local guys if they are committed to staying and developing locally, then playing for their local NRL club,” said Pride chief executive
Pride player Hezron Murgha. Photo: northernpride.com.au
officer Brock Schaefer. “He’s another example that just because you don’t make it as a young footballer, it doesn’t mean your dreams are finished. “Hezzy’s a dynamic runner and excellent support player, who has been in electrifying form this season for us. “So please get online, vote for Hezzy, and help him win this muchdeserved award.” Voting opens on Friday, August 16 and will close at midnight on Sunday, September 1. Go to www.qrl.com.au/default. aspx?s=xxxx-poty to cast your vote for Murgha. Over the next three Sundays, Channel 9’s Intrust Super Cup coverage will feature four of the candidates. In a further incentive for supporters to have their say, a random draw will take place with one lucky fan to receive two tickets to the gala dinner.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas THE top four sides have been decided and only Carlton are still left in the hunt for eighth spot. Hawthorn are sitting pretty on top of the table and need one more win to cement top spot. It was Richmond’s turn to hit a flat spot this week, going down to Carlton. The Blues have kept their finals hopes alive with this pressure win. Carlton sit two wins behind Port and could well draw closer again this week. The Blues have a very winnable match against the struggling Bombers while Port fly west to take on a tough Freo. Both Carlton and Port have less than one percentage point separating them and it could well come down to the match between them next week in the final round if results go as expected this week. What a game that could be! Geelong, Sydney and Freo all had big wins this week and the Hawks outmuscled the Pies. So the top four all look to be back in form at the right end of the season. Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon all look to be a bit unpredictable currently and don’t look to be a major threat for the flag. Port did enough to win but had to really work for it over the Suns. This week there are only a few games worth mentioning. The Swans test themselves against Geelong in a contest that will be a preview of coming finals games. Carlton will be going hell for leather to stay in finals contention against the Bombers and Port can end Carlton’s charge by upsetting the Dockers in Perth. Other than these the other games don’t have much meaning. Finals form, pride and tanking for draft picks about all that’s left to play and choke for. The usual end of season hijinks have already begun with the sacking of Michael Voss from the Lions. This might be a good time for the ageing and struggling veterans Black and Brown to bow out as well. Still not much news on the Essendon drama, which, is now dragging on and becoming frustrating for all concerned. Carlton are reportedly getting ready to have a player clean-out as their Super-coach tries to buy some heart and a shot at a flag in coming years or build for the future with a young crop. If the Lions performances have shown anything, Carlton would be wise to do the latter and build rather than short term poaching has-beens and struggling like the Lions have done under Voss. And of course we all wait to see if Buddy departs the Hawks for a bigger wallet with GWS. Hoping your team doesn’t start tanking over the last two rounds! My tips- Collingwood, Adelaide, Hawthorn, Geelong, Carlton, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Richmond and Western Bulldogs. That’s the wrap! Dallas

LOWER ranked teams push hard for the home stretch to the finals as seventh and eighth positions are still up for grabs. On Friday night the Broncos got a win over the Eels, and the Rabbitohs are back in the winning circle with success over the Sea Eagles. Saturday saw the Bulldogs beat the Raiders; the Cowboys win the all-Queensland derby against the Titans, and the Sharks proving to be too strong for the Dragons. On Sunday the Panthers scraped home for a win against the Warriors in a very close encounter. Then the Storm were too strong for the Knights. Monday night’s game between the Roosters and the Tigers saw the Roosters get the win with a dominant performance. Looking into Round 24, on Friday night the Panthers play the Broncos, and the Rabbitohs take on the Bulldogs. Then on Super Saturday there are three games, with the Dragons and Tigers going head to head. Then the Titans take on the Warriors, and the Cowboys look for a win over the Knights. Sunday will have two games played, with the Raiders taking on the Sea Eagles and the Storm will play the Eels. Monday night’s game between the Sharks and the Roosters will bring the round to a close. Karl’s Tips: Panthers, Rabbitohs, Dragons, Warriors, Cowboys, Raiders, Storm and Roosters. In other news, our local Super Intrust Cup team the Northern Pride have claimed the Minor Premiership. The Pride having a dominant season under new coach Jason Demetriou, have based their successful season on tireless defence. Hopefully the Pride can go on to claim the Premiership heading into Finals in coming weeks. Yours in footy, Karl

Word back so far is everywhere that Mick and Rachel go people are constantly asking them about the Queensland Dirt Kart title, about Weipa, how good the promotional video was, they can’t believe we had fireworks and how they want to come if it’s on again. Folks, this thing could possibly blow the roof of Weipa so stay tuned in the coming months race fans. So while these three people enjoy the adventure of a lifetime, it’s business as usual in Weipa for the rest of us dirt karters. We’ve had two race meetings since the Queensland title with mixed results from all. One thing is for sure, the quality of driving has improved with racing being closer and harder than ever. The biggest improvement has come from our KT Heavy class with Troy Batterham, Justin Hyytinen and Neil Fray having some fantastic battles every time they take to the track. It’s also good to see that we’ve had the 125cc class make a resurgence since the title with Ben Brown’s Aust 1 Dirt Kart being
purchased by Kev McDougall and adding to regular competitors Kirrily Baldwin, Maddie Waretini and Howard Waretini. Since the Queensland title many karts have been purchased and the new drivers are about to become a part of the Weipa dirt kart family which is fantastic. It looks like the last three months of the 2013 race season will be a bumper time out at the Weipa combined raceway when all the new karts arrive. So our next race meeting is on August 31, with racing kicking off at 7pm. This will be the last official race night for all the racers that are heading to Alice Springs for the Australian title where they will be re-united with Mick and Rachel Brooker and look to mix it with the best of the best once again. And now that you all know where the raceway is, be sure to drop in and say “wad up” when you next come out to the racing. The food’s hot and now the beer’s cold as well. Don’t forget it still costs nothing to get in. Remember, you aren’t dirty until you’ve been dirt karting. – Mowlesy
Michael (Kimba) Brooker is living the dream and racing dirt karts throughout South Australia and the Northern Territory.
100cc Gold Cup Angus Kart Club – everywhere Rachel and Michael Brooker go they hear great things about the Queensland Dirt Kart Titles held recently in Weipa.

Quiz questions present Bream and the cast lures got more Bream and small Barra. On the troll I nailed a couple of big Queenies and some smallish Blue Salmon, and yes, I got Bream as well. The bream appear to be in spawning mode and are everywhere. So, if I was going to have a fish I think the Mission River bridge would be my pick with the evening high tides as an added bonus. ‘Til next week, tight lines. – Cheers, China

I had a fish in the creeks off the Hey with livies and lures and put a catch together but it was a bit of a struggle. The live baits were smashed by big Bream and in the end I stopped using them to fish with plastics and lures, casting and trolling. The plastic accounted for a nice little Jack and the ever-

I have also heard of some big GTs stretching a few arms and these fish have been patrolling the edge of the reefs. Nathan Lickfold and Darren Lee took a mate down the coast to a popular reef for a bit of soft plastic flicking and came up with the goods in the way of Jewies and a good Fingermark. The Mission River is still giving up some good fish with some big Blue Salmon taking soft plastics and live bait. Darren Bradford went out with his son Benjamin to the

This week has seen a big change in the weather. The winds are still blowing, but not until lunch time, and the seas remain calm so there is a window of opportunity to get offshore for a quick morning session. That’s the good news because the fishing is pretty tough for the bottom bashers , but the guys trolling are doing alright. Notso Bright went out with Frenchy during the week and gave me a bit of work to do in my capacity as the weighmaster for the Billfish club. He captured a pending Australian record Sailfish on 6kg Tippet to eclipse the old record by 5kg. This fish was one of three other Sails and a small Black Marlin caught in a session. While Notso was talking to me on the phone he had a pod of Sails start feeding around his boat but he said that they were very hard to get to bite as they were switched on to eating Sardines. There are still Mackerel about and we have noticed that they are down deep with sevenmetre plus Laser Pro 190s the pick of the lures in gold and sardine colours. As I said before the bottom fish are on the small side and a lot of moves are required to fill the ice box. There are Tuskers, Cod, Sweetlip and Fingermark. Darren Redman saw the unusual sight of a school of Permit doing what they have to do to keep the species going, so for all the fly fisherman the school was on the northern end of Pera beach.

Bumper end to dirt kart season approaching By Derek Mowles
DON’T tell my wife I’m writing this – I promised her that I would keep dirt karts, and anything about it, on the down low for a while after the inaugural Queensland Dirt Kart Title was completed. You know my house became so obsessed with it (the 2013 Queensland Dirt Kart Title) that my kids started wanting to say grace at the dinner table and we would all end up thanking the big guy upstairs for the Queensland Dirt Kart titles and our amazing Dirt Kart team (Dirty Mowles Racing). So as I sit here in bed by myself with both hands on the computer, I’m starting to think about the last couple of months in the dirt kart world and reflecting on what an amazing time it has been. Not only have the Weipa Dirt Kart Club put on one of the most spectacular and entertaining events to happen in this town in the last decade, they have put Weipa well and truly on

the map right across the country. You might ask how I know this. Well, as some of you are aware we currently have two of our local dirt kart stars travelling through South Australia and the
Northern Territory flying the flag for our little club against the might of Australia’s best for the next three months. Our own Rachel Brooker and her dad Michael (Kimba) Brooker, along with
chief mechanic Mary Hindmarsh, have packed up the 4WD and trailer, with their dirt karts inside, and are on the trip of a life time. They will transverse the vast expanses of our beautiful country doing
the tourist thing, but most of all they will be visiting many dirt kart tracks. The trip will ultimately culminate in the Australian Dirt Kart title to be held on the weekend of October 6, 7 and 8 in Alice Springs. continued page 22
