EVEN an unseasonal downpour couldn’t dampen spirits at the 10th annual Weipa Bullride and Cabaret held last weekend. The weekend kicked off with the Friday night Cabaret, held at the rodeo grounds, and numbers were down a little this year due to a heavy shower of rain early in the night. Despite the rain there was still plenty of fun to be had with kid’s needle in a haystack and dummy roping, followed
by husband dragging and best butts competitions for the adults, while Hamilton Island band “Under the Radar” kept the crowds dancing and singing until late. Around 2500 people headed to the rodeo grounds on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the buckin action. A record number of poddy riders (five to nine years) headlined the afternoon’s action which saw riders of all ages compete for almost $4000 in
prizemoney with 205 competitors on 138 head of stock. Weipa Bullride’s Steve Fairbrother said that apart from Friday night’s rain the event was again a huge success. “We couldn’t put on such a great event without the support of our sponsors, stock providers and the community, and the hard working-Weipa Bullride committee once again put in an enormous effort to ensure an enteraining weekend for young and old to enjoy.

Cape York’s threatened turtle species are set to benefit from a new alliance recently formed on Western Cape York. Three Indigenous councils have committed to working together by taking a regional approach to the monitoring and threat management of threatened Flatback, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtles. Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council, Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council and Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council have formed the Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement Alliance, which will allow councils to manage turtle conservation locally, while sharing resources and coordinating works. Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers from the communities have been monitoring turtle populations and controlling threats for many years and through the Alliance will now make direct decisions on management based on local knowledge and experience. Alliance spokesperson, Robbie Morris from Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council said that in forming the Alliance, the work that is undertaken to conserve turtle species can be much better co-ordinated. “The Alliance gives our Land and Sea Rangers a strong voice for turtle conservation. We know the country, the turtles nesting sites, and the appropriate pest management strategy against threats to Olive Ridleys, Hawksbill and Flatback turtles on Western Cape York,” Mr Morris said. continued page 4

“One example of how the Alliance will work is where our councils will co-ordinate our feral pig culls to make sure we get the biggest bang for our buck, to give turtle hatchlings the best chance at survival, and to make best use of funding” he said. Monitoring over recent years has shown that pig predation on turtle nests and hatchlings on the west coast of Cape York is estimated at between 70 to 98 per cent in any given season. Other turtle egg predators include wild dogs, goannas and crocodiles. Olive Ridley turtles are listed in both Queensland and the Commonwealth as an endangered species, while Flatback and Hawksbill turtles are listed as a vulnerable species on both Queensland and the Commonwealth’s threatened species lists. Councillor Polly Smith from Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council said that the Cape’s regional natural resource management body is

Kevin’s minders dragged him in front of the cameras to apologise for his self-centred arrogance, but the message had not sunk in. He clearly did not understand why ignoring anyone might upset them. He probably did not notice that he did not actually say he felt sorry, and that he referred to the make-up artist as ‘the person’ throughout. He did not tell us anything about the lady, but we did get

helping the Alliance get off the ground. “ We a r e w o r k i n g closely with Cape York Natural Resource Management (Cape York NRM) to make this Alliance work, and will continue to work with each council’s preferred providers for scientific and technical support. “Our Councils have formed this Alliance so we can direct the coordination of our efforts from the ground up, not from the top down – councils and ranger groups want to take the lead in the survival of our turtle populations, and we are working together to make sure it happens” Councillor Smith said. The councils are currently in negotiations to engage a co-ordinator who will work across the ranger groups to align data collection, engage scientific advisors and co-ordinate ranger training. Other Western Cape York Aboriginal Councils have been invited to join the Alliance. The group’s next formal meeting will take place in September.

Tony Ears’ minders were doing a great job and had managed to keep him on a very tight rein. He continued his unattractive fan dance over his financial plans, insisting that everything would be just fine and he would be able to finance outrageous policies without making cuts that anyone would notice. He could tell us how but prefers not to, presumably because he does not want anyone to look at the books too closely. Fine; business as normal, until he slipped the leash and

proposed to stop people smugglers by buying up Indonesian fishing boats before the smugglers could get to them. Friends and enemies were stunned into silence for a while, and then rushed for their encyclopaedias. It turns out that Indonesia, a country made up of hundreds of thousands of islands, has something like three-quarters of a million fishing boats. Every coastal village has at least one boatyard, and they can certainly turn out boats faster that Tony could ever buy them. Subsidising Indonesian boat builders might be a desirable gesture, but I bet Tony’s minders will keeping him doubly secure this week.

NEWS
St Luke’s: celebrating 20 years in Weipa THE local Christian community has much to celebrate this weekend as it marks the 20th anniversary of St Luke’s Church in Weipa. Originally dedicated on Sunday, September 5, 1993 the church was established as a co-operating Church, involving a formal sharing ministry between the Anglican and Uniting Churches. The dream of constructing a Church in Weipa began as early as 1968 when the Carpentaria Aerial Mission of the Anglican Church first flew into Weipa and a new mining town was being set up adjacent to the Presbyterian Aboriginal Mission. The Anglican Priest who landed on the old airstrip adjacent to the Mission was Reverend Tony Hall-Matthews (the “Flying Bishop”) who traversed Cape York by plane, then used his fold-up motorcycle to visit stations and missions. He was heavily involved in the initial planning of St Luke’s and participated in the Church’s dedication in 1993. Many people contributed to a fundraising appeal for the construction of the
Church including Bruce Peters who organised a runathon from Weipa to Cairns which raised $12,000. Comalco Aluminium Limited shared the vision of the building as a community facility and recognised it’s potential as a cyclone recovery shelter, upgrading construction by including removable cyclone screens. Floor coverings and 100 chairs (which are still used today) were also provided by Comalco. Designed by Wim Van Den Herik of Thomson Adsett Van Den Herik Pty Ltd (Architects) a host of local contractors and volunteers contributed to the construction of St Luke’s including Ray Fazldeen, Peter Statton, Keith Gay, Bill Hennessy, Phil Clark and many others. The “Flying Bishop” Reb. Tony Hall-Matthews will be preaching at the anniversary service to be held at St Luke’s Church, Weipa this Sunday, September 1 from 9.15am. Following the service a barbecue will be held and gold coin donations will help to support the work of Frontier Services in the Cape York patrol.

Carpentaria Golf Club manager Sharon Gardiner and Weipa Bowls Club manager Tania Iti are reminding patrons that it is a legal requirement to become a member of their clubs.
MANAGERS of local clubs are reminding patrons that they need to pay membership in order to enjoy the clubs’ facilities. We i p a B o w l s Club manager Tania Iti and Carpentaria Golf Club manager Sharon Gardiner said their respective club’s membership drives were not “money grabbing” but rather upholding Liquor Licensing laws. “As a licensed club patrons need to be members just to walk through the door,” Ms Gardiner said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re just coming in for dinner, you still have to be a member to enter the premises. “Take-away alcohol can only be sold to members, and pay-outs from poker machines also require the patron to have a membership card or be signed in by a member.” Anyone living within a 15 kilometre radius of a licensed club has to be a paid member of that club, either a social member or a full member. “If you live within that radius you can visit a club with a member and be signed in as a visitor three times before you are required to purchase your own membership,” Ms Iti said.
“In order to take advantage of the full facilities of the club you have to be prepared to become a member and abide by the club’s rules.” Both managers said patrons needed to understand that the clubs were bound by strict Liquor Licensing Laws and breaching these laws carries harsh penalties. “By law we must keep a register of members and their details and request to see patron’s membership cards upon entry to the club. Failure to do so can result in an on-the-spot $500 fine for the club with a maximum penalty of up to $4000,” Ms Gardiner said. Becoming a member at either the Weipa Bowls Club or Carpentaria Golf Club takes only a few minutes to complete a form and a 12-month membership at both clubs is affordable, with social membership of the Bowls Club set at $5, and $10 at Golfies. “Income from membership of both clubs contributes to the upkeep of infrastructure so it’s in every patron’s interest to support their club by paying membership so they can continue to enjoy the facilities we offer,” Ms Iti said.

HISTORICAL ADDRESS: Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor Philemon Mene with chief executive officer Amos Njaramba at the Lot 188 Lee-Ding Street house.
THE first building constructed in the Napranum community will be restored following support from the Federal Government. Funding of more than $100,000 has been announced towards the restoration of the house at Lot 188 Lee-Ding Street which is of cultural and historical importance to the community. “Elders have told me the building was orginally a dormitory and later used as a mess,” Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor, Philemon Mene said. The former NASC council was offered
$400,000 by the Queensland Government to demolish the building however they refused the offer due to the historical significance of the property. “This grant will enable the current council to honour the wish of the former council to preserve the oldest building in Napranum as a museum,” Mayor Mene said. NASC chief executive officer Amos Njaramba said he was very excited about the development. “This funding will go a long way in helping us preserve the history of Napranum.” he said.
Deadly threat knocking at Queensland’s door SCIENTISTS at The University of Queensland have identified a deadly threat lurking just 30 kilometres north of Queensland. Researcher Dr Nigel Beebe said established populations of the dangerous Asian tiger mosquito had been found on the Torres Strait islands of Waiben (Thursday) and Ngurupia Horn), in the southern Torres Strait, just off Cape York Peninsula. “This exotic mosquito is banging on our northern door demanding entrance and is most likely, despite our increasing efforts, to gain access.” He said there was no clearly marked frontier between Papua New Guinea and northern Australia, and it was difficult to ensure that people and boats were not accompanied by mosquitos carrying deadly viruses such as dengue and chikungunya. “Once on the mainland, the Asian tiger mosquito is highly capable of travelling with humans and establishing as far south as Tasmania,” Dr Beebe said. “It is capable of transmitting both dengue and chikungunya throughout northern and southern urban landscapes in the summer months,” he said. “We need to be completely on the front foot here, aggressively developing technologies to shut down the risk of an Asian tiger mosquito expansion into Australia, while establishing contingency plans for its arrival.” Dr Beebe led a team of UQ researchers which quantified the population genetics of the tiger mosquito and found it did not come from PNG, as first thought, but from the Indonesian region, and most likely through illegal fishing in the region. The study, published in the journal PLoS, found that there were already regular appearances of the Asian tiger mosquito at Australia’s northern mainland ports, with boat travel between the islands being the most likely cause. “With climate change, and the potential invasion of the tiger mosquito into our urban landscapes, the risk of dengue and chikungunya virus transmission is likely to increase in Australia, due to changing temperatures as well as the increased use of rain water tanks and other water storage facilities,” Dr Beebe said.

Sunday sessions return to the Stubby Hut IT’S a case of ‘back to the future’ for the Weipa Stubby Hut this Sunday as the doors of this famous watering hole once again open for the Sunday Session. What was an institution through the late 70s, into the 80s and early 90s is being reprised by a small community group with sponsorship from the Weipa Town Authority. For the next four months, on the first Sunday of the month, the stubbies will be re-opened at Evans Landing on the site of the original Stubby Hut, now transformed into the Cultural Centre. Gary Blocksidge, committee member and chief entertainment manager said “We are encouraging the community to come along and join what promises to be a great afternoon by the river. “There is a licence in place for the afternoon, the Weipa Cricket Club will be operating their version of the old ‘Snack
Shack’ – an oyster bar and there will be some good old fashioned local live entertainment. The kids are also catered for with soft drinks and a jumping castle. All you need to do is bring your own chairs or picnic blanket. “The running of the bar and food stalls will be offered to local community groups for each Stubby Hut Sunday session so it’s also a great fundraiser for them,” he said. The venue will open at 1pm with street-side markets and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Courtesy buses will run between town and the Evans Landing venue approximately every 30 minutes until closing time, just after sunset. Bus stops will be located at the Assembly Hall, golf club, on the corner of Circular Way and Flinders Street and the Centrelink office. The Weipa Town Authority has actively supported the committee and sees this initiative

as a ‘real grass roots’ community get together. “The venue is a big part of Weipa’s history,” WTA chairman Peter McCulkin said. “There are many great memories here for a lot of
long-time residents but more importantly it is a great venue for the community to get regularly together socially in what promises to be a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere,” he said.
I was asked in 2009 to help with the Malu Sara tragedy to achieve a just and good result for our clients. We called Warren Entsch, who was to prove my cynical attitude about politicians wrong. He hit the ground running, he was passionate and went out of his way to help and highlight the issues. The ‘Me Too-ism’ from other candidates during this campaign appears to be because Warren has been the one coming up with deas and solutions. It’s refreshing that we have an MP in Warren Entsch who can not only lead, but is often quite prepared to sit down and talk with people. His knowledge and affection for the Torres Strait communities has impressed many people; the Torres Strait doesn't have a better friend than Warren in Canberra.

SITTING member Warren Entsch (LNP) is at very short odds to retain the seat of Leichhardt he regained in 2010 for the September 7 election. Latest odds quote Mr Entsch at paying a $1.10 for a $1 investment, effectively odds of 1-10 on. Labor’s Billy Gordon is quoted at $6 with the remainder at $20 and over. Mr Entsch opened betting at about $1.15 to $1.18, with Mr Gordon at $4, but the sitting member’s odds have firmed considerably to his current quote. Mr Entsch who held the seat from 1996 to 2007 when he “retired” only to see Labor’s Jim Turnour take the seat with a swing of 14.3 per cent on the back of Kevin Rudd being swept into power. It was one of the biggest swings in the country. Mr Entsch returned for the 2010 poll at the begging of LNP power brokers and reclaimed his seat from Mr Turnour with a swing

of almost nine per cent and now holds the seat with a majority of 4.6 per cent. While such a percentage regards the seat of being marginal, it’s far from the fact and should be regarded as a safe LNP seat. Mr Entsch, who is the Opposition Whip in the last parliament, is expected to be made a senior minister should the LNP be elected to government as current polls predict. The seat has generally been regarded as a bell-weather seat, meaning the sitting member is part of the Government. That held essentially true until the last election in 2010 when the Gillard government was returned, but the Leichhardt member sat on the Opposition benches. with Skytrans, a position that has given him a good understanding of Cairns and Cape York issues and needs.
63 year-old Entsch was a grazier and crocodile farmer from Mareeba in the Atherton Tablelands when first
elected an MP in 1996. Active in the Cape York Cattleman’s union group, Entsch came to prominence before the 1996 election after organising against the Goss government’s proposals to resume several pastoral leases to create a new wilderness area. He previously worked as a fitter with the RAAF and at the Yabulu nickel mine. In his first term he prepared a pair of crocodile skin boots for visiting US President Bill Clinton. Entsch was liked by his own party for his knock-about working class background, just the appeal needed to keep the ‘battlers’ onside. Paradoxically, Entsch has also been one of the strongest supporters of legislative change to recognise same-sex relationships, a stand that saw him denied Family First preferences at the 2004 election. Entsch retired at the 2007 election but returned to win his seat back at the 2010 election and has held the position of Chief Opposition Whip since the 2010 election, a complicated job in a finely divided House.
THE SEAT LNP holds the seat with 4.6 per cent SITTING MEMBER Warren Entsch (LNP) STATISTICS At 16.7 per cent Leich-

Earning a high income won’t automatically make you wealthy When you earn enough money to pay for everything you need there’s no reason to save regularly, right? Wrong. There’s far more to becoming wealthy than earning a high income as suggested in the well-known proverb ‘The art is not in making money, but in keeping it’. It’s an unfortunate fact of life nowadays that the more you earn, the more you tend to spend. Today, there is so much pressure to spend money on the latest gadgets and toys. We’re living in a spending culture where the next best thing is always just around the corner. When you earn a higher than average income it’s easy to justify upgrading your lifestyle here and treating yourself a little bit there. After all, you’ve worked hard to earn that income and you want to get some enjoyment out of it. You may be able afford a high standard of living now but could this lifestyle be maintained if you stopped working? To get the full benefit of your income you need to cap your spending and get into the habit of putting away part of what you earn every week or month. This way your money can start working for you. There are many benefits of having spare cash around: • You will have money set aside for any small emergencies so you don’t have to worry about how you will cope if something goes wrong • You will be able buy things with cash rather than credit cards. Many retailers offer discounts for paying with cash. • Importantly you will have spare money for investing which will help you grow and protect your wealth over the long term.

The major consequence for the Lord dying for the sins of the whole world was the separation between him and the Father, something that has never happened before in all eternity. This was shown when he was on the cross then the darkness fell and the Lord felt the Father’s Presence had left him and he shouted, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “ My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” (Mark Ch 15 vs 33-34). About this same time Matthew reports in his gospel that “The earth shook, the rocks split apart, the graves broke open, and many of God’s people who had
By Rev. Michael Connolly
died were raised to life. They left the graves, and after Jesus rose from death, they went into the Holy City, where many people saw them.” (Matthew Ch 27 vs 50-53). Of the four gospels only Matthew reports this event. Notice that Matthew says that God’s people rose from death after Jesus died, showing in a remarkable way that the death of Jesus brings life to all who are God’s people. Remember that Jesus is fully human yet fully God. Colossians Ch 1 vs 15-18 states, “Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first-born Son, superior to all created
things. For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers, and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him. Christ existed before all things, and in union with him all things have their proper place. He is the head of his body, the church; he is the source of the body’s life. He is the firstborn Son, who was raised from death, in order that he alone might have the first place in all things.” The Lord be praised!
Rev Michael Connolly
FEDERAL ELECTION – September 7, 2013
Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Training centre cuts a scare tactic ALP candidate for Leichhardt Billy Gordon’s claims that a Coalition government would “cut Trade Training Centres” (Western Cape Bulletin, 21-8) is simply another example of his party’s fear campaign. It was back in 2007 that Labor promised to deliver 2,650 Trade Training Centres – one in every secondary school. But to date they have only delivered 370 which means almost 90 per cent of schools are still waiting. Senate Estimates revealed that more than half way through the program, half the money had already been spent, despite the completion rate of just 14 per cent. If the Coalition is elected, we will definitely be replacing Labor’s failed Trade Training
Centres programs with the highly successful Australian Technical Colleges program that existed under the Howard Government. This proven program is a valuable pathway for young Australians into technical and vocational education, with an emphasis on real-world skill development. It’s clear that Labor is incapable of delivering vital skills centres to schools, even after watering down the program to make it easier to deliver on their promise. At a time when the youth jobless rate in Leichhardt has grown and tripled to a staggering 28.4%, it’s tragically clear this Government has no chance of delivering its so-called Education Revolution on time or on budget. Warren Entsch Federal Member for Leichhardt
Thank you for the welcome LeiChhArdT is a wonderful electorate that encompasses many communities and towns. The electorate extends north from Cairns along the ‘Marlin Coast’ between the Atherton Tablelands and the sea to Mossman, and then spreads out to cover Cape York north of the Mitchell river and all of the Torres Strait islands. The electorate is twice the size of Tasmania, but I am doing my best to campaign in as many areas as possible. I am working hard to become the next Labor Member for Leichhardt and covering a lot of ground. I recently visited the Western Cape which is an incredibly beautiful part of the country. I have family here which is why it has been great to come back during the campaign. I visited representatives of Weipa Town Authority, Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council and Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council and caught up with locals at every opportunity. I was pleased to announce that Federal Labor funding, provided under the Regional Development Australia
ALP candidate Billy Gordon, pictured in Weipa last week during his Western Cape York visit.
Fund, to help Napranum and Mapoon communities develop projects they have identified as important to their future progress. Napranum is keen to restore the community’s first constructed building maintained for future generations. Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council plans to address infrastructure deficiencies at its much used facilities – the hall, the accommodation dongas and the council administration carpark. will be established at Weipa’s Western Cape Training Centre with $1.5 million in federal funding. I received some insight into these Trade Training Centres when the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and I visited the one at St Mary’s Catholic College in Cairns a couple of weeks ago. Trade Training Centres really give young people a head start in getting a job or embarking on a career. All these projects serve a common purpose – expanding economic development and economic diversification on Cape York. As the National Broadband Network rolls out in due course, Cape communities will be even more connected with each other and the rest of the world. This is good for business, good for health services and good for social well-being. Thank you very much to everyone who made me welcome. My recent visit underlined how much of a priority the Western Cape region should be to anybody wishing to represent Leichhardt in the Federal Parliament. Billy Gordon ALP Candidate for Leichhardt
Greens dental plan will help locals in Leichhardt GreenS lead Senate candidate, Adam Stone and candidate for Leichhardt, Johanna Kloot have this week launched the Greens fully-costed plan to make it easier for every Australian to see a dentist. “The Greens already delivered a down payment on Denticare and now we want to finish the job,” said Mr Stone. “Oral health is important for overall health but unfortunately one in three Australians say they can’t afford to see the dentist. “The Greens believe that your health shouldn’t be determined by your bank balance so we made dental reform a priority in this term of parliament.” Greens Leichhardt candidate, Johanna Kloot said she was proud that the party had secured an investment of more than $4 billion and from next year 3.4 million children will be able to access dental treatment through Medicare. “Thanks to the Greens, 15.745 families in Leichhardt will be able to take their children to the dentist as easily as they take them to the GP,” she said. “The Greens see this investment as a solid down payment but we won’t stop until everyone has access to high-quality dental care. We have a fullycosted plan to make Medicare funded dentistry available to all Australians, beginning with those who need it most. “Once upon a time the Labor party also cared about universal healthcare. Now, while they’re busy fighting each other, the Greens are standing up for what matters.” Details of the Greens fully costed dental care package are available at: http://greens.org. au/denticare

AFL wrap-up with Dallas LAST round! Carlton have choked by losing narrowly to Essendon and have missed the finals, unless the Bombers are penalised for the drugs saga and lose points. The Blues should change their name to the Carlton Tigers. With Richmond in the finals, finally it seems that Carlton have taken their place as 9th place chokers! Sorry to my several Carlton friends in town….but it’s true! Even the new super-coach this year couldn’t get them up for finals...! Round 22 saw most of the games result in blow-outs. Collingwood, Adelaide, St Kilda, Richmond, Geelong and Fremantle all smashed their opponents. The only games of any consequence out of these were the Cats and Dockers wins. The Cats were too good for the Swans and have firmed in betting for the flag. The Dockers were impressive over Port and have shown that the lower finals teams will likely struggle against the top sides. In more competitive games the Hawks had a good workout before finals over a still impressive North outfit. The Lions also took out a close one over the improving Western Bulldogs. The Brownlow looks to be wide open now after Gary Ablett has had a quiet month, showing he is human after all. Round 23, the final round doesn’t offer a lot of important matches with only 2 games featuring finals teams battling it out. The Swans and Hawks should be a good taste of what’s to come in September, while Essendon and Richmond will also be interesting. The lower clubs missing finals will be likely going for a mix of youth, experimenting with tactics for next year and farewelling club greats. Those heading into September will be looking for their best team performance with polish for most of a game to have them ready to peak for finals. Enjoy your last game of the season if your team is bowing out this weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing the big guns of the comp fire as we head into September. The Hawks and Cats are still a class above but the Dockers are ticking all the boxes heading into finals and it will be interesting to see what happens if/when they meet the top two! And one can’t rule out the Tigers. Still suffering inconsistency, anything is possible if they can put a few performances together and hit their peak in the run for the flag! My tips- Hawthorn, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Richmond, West Coast, Gold Coast, Collingwood, Western Bulldogs. That’s the wrap! Bring on the finals! Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Karl SOME top eight teams suffering injuries and bans have their depth tested heading into the finals. Round 24 kicked off with a bang on Friday night with two very entertaining games! The Rabbitohs were triumphant over the Bulldogs, and the Panthers caused an upset against the Broncos. On Super Saturday three games were played, the Tigers got a win over the Dragons, the Warriors scraped home against the Titans in a very close encounter and the Cowboys proved too strong for the Knights. Sunday afternoon had two games played, with the Sea Eagles beating the Raiders, and the Storm putting on a dominant display against the Eels. Monday night’s game bought Round 24 to a close with the upset of the round when the Sharks beat the Roosters, proving they mean business heading into the finals. Looking into Round 25, Friday night football kicks-off with the Broncos taking on the Knights, and the Bulldogs are up against the Panthers. Then on Saturday there will be three games played, with the Tigers going into battle with the Rabbitohs, the Warriors versing the Raiders, and the battle of the heavyweights between the Sea Eagles and the Storm. On Sunday the Sharks and the Cowboys battle it out to better their position on the ladder, and the Roosters come up against the Titans. Karl’s Tips: Knights, Panthers, Rabbitohs, Warriors, Storm, Sharks, Roosters, Eels. Yours in footy, Karl

Bream. At one point we tried to bait fish for Grunter and we used a 400 gram packet of Prawns, and every Prawn was a Bream. We went up the Hey and again, more Barra, but no size to them, so we tried live and dead bait and scored with Grunter, Fingermark and Trevally, and more Bream. Over at Red Beach there are some good Bream taking Prawns but Catfish can be a bit of a pest, and there was a Sea Snake caught there as well. The Mission River bridge has still been fishing well and there have been a few Prawns there as well. The water temperature is starting to rise and we had 27.5 degrees Celsius in one of the creeks we fished. My pick of the week would be the creeks of the Embley River - fish them on a falling tide and you should have a ball. ‘Til next week praying for smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

from page 22 Speaking of the Billfish Club they are holding their annual tournament on the long weekend in October and will be holding some workshops prior to the event. If anyone is interested in having a go at these magnificent sport fish contact one of the committee to put your name down. Annual club fees are also now due. Because we couldn’t fish offshore Troy and I fished Waldrom Creek for a few Barra and Jacks upstream. Down near the mouth it was Trevally alley, with small GTs and Goldens and the odd Queenfish thrown in for good measure. I got a bit of a shock when my lure was taken by something big and after 20 minutes we mouth-gaffed a five foot Whaler Shark. I retrieved the lure and released the shark to fight another day. The next day we ventured up the Embley River and again got Barra, Queenfish, Cod and the breeding

a pearler, landing his first Spotted Mackerel followed up with a nice Spanish Mackerel, then a huge Longtail Tuna - so that covered the first hour. We continued to troll and we caught another three Tuna and all the fish came on the
same purple Rapala deep diver. I’ve asked the guys at Tackle World to put some in stock as they seem to produce week in and week out. We then went to see if there were any bottom fish and we got plenty of Tuskers , but they were all throw backs. Moving around a bit we managed to put a feed together with one very nice trout for Troy. Unfortunately the winds kicked in on Friday making
it too uncomfortable for us so we spent the next six days chasing fish in the rivers. Gavin from the Billfish Club cashed in on the plethora of Sailfish that are out wide and on one day had that many fish actively feeding around his boat that there were too many to count. He went out the next day and just burned fuel, not seeing a fish or bait all day. continued page 21
