Deliberately-lit blaze contained A DELIBERATELY-lit fire in bushland bordering the Albatross Bay Resort was contained by the Western Cape Rural Fire Brigade on Monday evening. With winds gusts up to 50kph recorded in Weipa on Monday afternoon the fire rapidly spread through the dry bush behind the popular watering hole, providing a spectacle for staff and guests. The fire was eventually halted when Western Cape Rural Fire Brigade members back-burned the area. If you see a fire contact the fire service immediately on 000.

Mayors reject Pearson
CAPE York mayors have firmly rejected moves to give Noel Pearson, director of the Cape York Institute, any further control over funding, policy or service delivery in the region. Following recent articles in national press relating to the Federal Liberal National Party (LNP) policy to assign significant power and funding to Noel Pearson should an LNP government be elected this Saturday, a teleconference with the mayors took place on Monday morning, facilitated by Member for
Cook, David Kempton. The elected Mayors of Kowanyama, Aurukun, Napranum, Mapoon, Lockhart River, NPARC, Cook Shire and Weipa Town Authority participated in the teleconference. The mayors agreed they want government at all levels to acknowledge and respect they have been elected to represent their people and should be consulted and engaged. Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott has allegedly promised $5m
to help develop Pearson’s ‘gap plan’ however Cape York mayors claim over $120m has already been spent in the Cape by several organisations controlled by Mr Pearson with little measurable benefit. “The ‘gap plan’ will create another form of bureaucracy – black tape rather than red tape” said Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire council mayor Wayne Butcher. “Cape York leaders are screaming for support on the ground but are not being heard.” continued page 2

Weipa Town Authority chairman Peter McCulkin called into question the cost efficiency of Mr Pearson’s concept of ‘pooled funding’ in the proposed Indigenous Policy Productivity Council (IPPC) and Mr Pearson’s involvement in education given the limited success of his current Direct Instruction programs. “There are questions around the transparency of Mr Pearson’s programs with no real analysis of what is expended on administrative/management costs or the benefits to the region. “Elected Cape York leaders are better positioned to lead change rather than non-elected representatives from non-government organisations outside the region.” he said. Aurukun Shire Council mayor Dereck Walpo said Pearson’s Direct Instruction program sounded like military or police academy-type education. “It’s an American methodology. What has happened to the good old fashioned Australian education?” According to Cook Shire Council mayor Peter Scott Cooktown High School is experiencing problems with children transitioning from Hopevale (Direct Instruction) to Cooktown High. “There is a need for independent substantiation of outcomes of the Cape York Academy model,’ Mr Scott said. “Hopevale families are moving to Cooktown to put their kids into the Christian Primary School and State School to avoid the CYAA system.”

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.
EVERYONE knows politicians tell porkies. We expect it; it’s what polies do. Mostly they are small porkies, more in the nature of a salesman’s patter than a serious attempt to deceive. Polies just can’t help themselves. They open their mouths and out comes a subtly adjusted version of reality. We learn to live with the idea. Then there are the big porkies, the ones designed to

Mr Scott also commented on the recent awarding of the Remote Jobs and Communities Program (RJCP) contract at Coen and Aurukun to the Cape York Institute. “There is little community support for the award of the contract to the CYI, and there is a demonstrated disregard of the legislated roles and responsibilities of Local Government in Cape York,” he said. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor, Philemon Mene said his community had experienced enormous changes to the social well being and economic opportunity in Napranum in just over 12 months, which has been achieved by

The official ceremony was followed by a community dinner. By Giembra Busmer
THE Napranum Take-Away and Convenience Store was officially opened last Wednesday by Member for Cook, David Kempton. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council chief executive officer Amos Njaramba said the store was the latest in a number of successful initiatives to come to fruition in the community during the last 12 months. “The partnership between Graham Strang from the Herit-
age Resort and the NASC was the first agreement between private enterprise and our council to be approved,’ Mr Njaramba said at the official opening ceremony. “”We are looking forward to a wonderful working relationship between the Heritage Resort, NASC and the Napranum community.” The store includes a take-away store which will be serving everything from hamburgers to lobsters, steak
meals and desserts. Tables and chairs will also be provided in the undercover area for those wishing to dine-in. A “general store” accompanies the food outlet which houses an eclectic collection of goods including crab pots, whitegoods, gardening equipment, household furnishings, children’s toys, bicycles and tyres. The establishment of the store was originally floated 13 months ago and Mr Strang
said he was proud of the final product. “We’ve come a long way in that time and I am pleased to be able to offer the people of the Napranum community such a high-quality establishment,” he said. At the official opening Mr Kempton said he was pleased that with the opening of the store the Napranum community would be able to purchase quality products and meals at reasonable prices.
Northline wins Rio Tinto Alcan freight contract ADELAIDE-BASED freight and logistics outfit Northline, has won a major contract with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. The contract will see Northline move more than 5,000 tonnes of supplies annually from around the country destined for the Weipa bauxite mine. According to the company the freight transported for the Weipa mine will be varied, with items moved including office supplies right through to capital pieces of
equipment like earthmoving machinery. It will be transported from Northline’s Cairns depot, where it will be then moved to the mine by a local barge contractor. “The contract with Rio Tinto marks a new era for Northline as it realises the potential of its national network to support the supply of freight to remote locations,” Northline chief executive officer Craige Witton said. “We now operate a network of twelve strategically located depots in six states
with a strong presence in northern Australia including two depots in North Queensland, four in the Northern Territory and one in North Western Australia. “This new contract will utilise our full distribution network through which we’re able to offer economies of scale and apply technologies to reduce costs and increase productivity for Rio Tinto,” he said. Northline’s track and trace system will be used to allow RTAW to monitor its freight around the clock.

Nutrition students get hands-on experience in Coen QUEENSLAND University of Technology nutrition and dietetics students Lucinda Appleton and Claire Nelson, who are on a six-week placement at Apunipima Cape York Health Council, took part in a Healthy Mayi (food) store badging launch at Armbrust & Co and Mulley’s Market and Fuel in Coen on Wednesday, August 28. Claire and Lucinda are the fifth group of nutrition and dietetics students to do a placement at Apunipima this year and are finding the experience a rewarding one. “In comparison with other students completing their projects in Brisbane, the placement at Apunipima has given us a handson community-based experience and an insight into the complexities of providing quality health care to remote areas that theory based learning simply cannot teach,” Lucinda said.
As part of their placement, the students helped co-ordinate the Healthy Mayi store badging launch, which sees healthy food items in two Coen food stores badged with a locally designed Healthy Mayi logo. This logo supports shoppers to select healthy product options, and aims to make the healthy choice the easy choice. The launch involved Healthy Mayi taste tests, store tours, nutrition promotion stalls, activities for children, fruit and water giveaways and appearances by Vegieman (from the Go for 2&5 campaign). “As poor nutrition is a contributor to the development of many chronic diseases, planning initiatives that empower people to make healthier food and drink choices can have benefits for the health and wellbeing of the whole community,” Claire explained. Nutrition Team Leader Judith Aliakbari said store badging

projects are a great vehicle for students to get a taste of nutrition work. “The Healthy Mayi store badging project involves a whole range of elements, from local consultation, planning the launch day and developing systems for ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the project. It enables the students to work with people who live in remote areas
and get a feel for the logistics of putting together a health initiative.” Store badging projects are running in several other Cape York communities, and have shown to be a great way to build partnerships between store groups and the nutrition workforce to jointly promote the healthy food and drink options available in remote stores.
RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa has released its Sustainable Development Report for last year, providing information about the company’s approach to aspects of sustainable development and a reflection on performance. General manager, operations, Gareth Manderson said the report provides people a detailed understanding of the mine’s activities. “Overall, 2012 was a successful year for our bauxite operations, having achieved record production and implementing a number of innovative projects,” Mr Manderson said. “This has seen our standard of operating practice improve and a range of health, safety and environmental initiatives implemented. “Like any business however, the year wasn’t without its challenges and the report also outlines our focus areas for improvement.” The report is available online at www. riotintoalcan.com under ‘Reports and publications’. Hard copies can be arranged by contacting Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Community Relations department. “We welcome the community’s feedback on this report, which can be provided via our freecall hotline 1800 707 633 or emailing RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com,” Mr Manderson said.

Snapshot: Queensland’s children and young people A REPORT released last week reveals that Queensland’s children and young people are progressing well in a number of wellbeing areas. Acting Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, Barry Salmon, said the Commission’s eleventh annual Snapshot: Children and Young People in Queensland report provides a comprehensive overview of the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people in Queensland and draws attention to important trends. “The information in the Snapshot report allows us to
look at trends over time, so we have the information needed to plan ahead for a better future for our children,” Mr Salmon said. “There have been noticeable decreases in the proportions of children developmentally at risk and vulnerable by the time they reach their first year of schooling, and the rate of young people continuing from the beginning to the end of secondary school is the highest it has been in a decade. “There continue to be declines in the rate of teenage pregnancies and sexual assault victimisation, as well as mortal-

ity rates among infants and children and young people of all ages.” “However, the report also identified significant proportion of children and young people are not meeting daily physical activity requirements and over one quarter of children and young people are overweight or obese,” he said. “In addition, too many children and young people are homeless, rates of notifications of sexually transmissible infections continue to rise, and the suicide mortality rate for young people has increased in more recent years.

Trinity Monuments thanks local communities
Trinity Monument’s Anna Feher-Holan with her children Annika and Elliot. By Giembra Busmer
OWNER-operators of Trinity Monuments in Cairns are giving back to Cape York and Torres Strait communities who have supported their business. The family-run business was originally started by Attila Feher-Holan’s parents and was taken over by Atilla and his wife Anna in 2011. “The business began as a foundry however Attila’s parents decided to branch into tombstones,” Anna said. “They were specifically interested in creating Indigenous tombstones as they were so individual, and they knew they could supply a better product than what was available at the time.”
As most of Trinity Monuments work is in the Cape York and Torres Strait area the couple decided to re-pay their customers loyalty by donating a sport pack, containing two rugby balls, an AFL Ball and a soccer ball to each of the 23 primary schools in the two areas. “Our families come back to us time and again so this is a way for us to show them our gratitude for that loyalty,” Anna said. Although a vast majority of their custom comes from Cape York and the Torres Strait they are also commissioned by people in Papua New Guinea, the Solomons and the Cook Islands.

SBS expands digital services SBS last week welcomed a Federal Government announcement to deliver SBS digital television services to 95 additional locations across Australia in the largest expansion of the network’s television services since its establishment in the 1970s. The expansion will deliver the suite of SBS digital television services for the first time to the homes of at least 130,000 more Australians living in regional and remote communities. It includes areas which have never before received SBS digital television services and areas where SBS will take over a communityrun facility and provide SBS digital services
as part of its national network. The expansion addresses a long-term inequity between SBS’s rural and remote coverage and the ABC and other commercial broadcasters, bringing SBS into line with their reach for the first time in the organisation’s 35 year history. Full rollout of the expansion will take some time due to the number of services involved but some communities are already benefitting from new SBS digital television services. SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said: “This announcement is exciting news for Australians living in rural and remote communities and a significant milestone in SBS’s
evolution. It means more people will receive SBS digital television than ever before. “The expansion of digital television services will enable SBS to use its unique position within the Australian media landscape to contribute to social cohesion, by telling stories which truly explore and celebrate our diversity in a way only SBS can.” Access to the suite of SBS digital services means people can also listen to the multilingual radio services of SBS through their digital television. Weipa is one of the sites which previously had a self-help service and will now have a funded permanent SBS digital service.
New book reveals an innovative approach to buying and selling property PROPERTY expert, Rick Otton, has turned the tables on the current ways of buying and selling property through, his book “How to Buy A House for $1”. Otton’s approach to property provides information on alternative ways of buying and selling real estate that most investors and first home buyers aren’t aware of. With property prices on the rise and the reduction in government grants for first home buyers, the great Australian dream is becoming less of a reality for most. Studies indicate that on average a couple will need to save for at least 5 and half years to meet the minimum 10 per cent deposit requirements for a $60,000 deposit and a first home owner 13 years to save for a 20 per cent deposit for a deposit of $100,000. Aussies who are wanting to get a foot in the realestate market, but who haven’t saved enough of a deposit can now buy a house through strategies that have been around since the 1850s. In his book, Rick outlines how you can achieve home ownership or build a property portfolio now without having to wait five to 13 years with these proven strategies. For those existing homeowners and investors who are having financial difficulty servicing their current mortgage, Rick also outlines in his book ways that you can turn a negatively geared property into a postive cash flow or even sell for your asking price. “I decided to write the book as the current system fails to work for many everyday Australians. “At the end of the day, it’s about negotiating the terms of the agreement rather than the actual price of the property – this is where many buyers and sellers become unstuck. “The book challenges the current

“THE Cook electorate is our family and our future.” This is the vision emanating from the Electorate of Cook in response to The Queensland Plan – A 30year vision for Queensland. M e mb e r f o r C o o k David Kempton initiated a comprehensive survey and intensive workshop to complement the plan and reflect the uniqueness of Cook. “I wanted to achieve a rich response from my electorate to The Queensland Plan and was humbled to receive recognition for my efforts on behalf of the electorate and of the inclusive attitude of our government,” he said. The ground-breaking workshop, held in Weipa last week, has been hailed by the 40 participants from every corner of the electorate as a resounding success, with a visionary blueprint for the Cook electorate now on its way to the State Government. Over the past month, a survey was circulated widely throughout the electorate with 544 responses received. The survey sought
input around personal values, people’s experiences of the electorate and their desires for the future. Family, honesty, concern for future generations and community involvement were revealed as among the top personal values of the people of Cook. Their current experience includes bureaucracy, lack of cooperation and short-term focus, however the electorate also sees the emergence of community engagement and environmental awareness. For the future, the community is seeking accountability, community ownership, being heard and financial stability. Over the course of the two-day workshop, designed and facilitated by Dynamic Exchange, the group – including elected representatives, industry leaders and a diverse range of constituents - identified the electorate’s top five values and what is working well in Cook, as well as created a wish list and vision statement for the electorate. The workshop concluded with the development of a clear direction and specific objectives for the

Cook electorate, as well as a final visionary statement: “The Cook electorate is our family and our future”. As an added bonus, the workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for networking between community, industry and government sectors, with many representatives creating relationships previously
not available to them. Workshop sponsors included Bernard Power, Ian Copeland, Swiss Farms, Remote Building Solutions, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, Mi Haven, Port Bajool, Island and Cape, Sea Swift and Western Cape Chamber of Commerce. A full report has been compiled and will be released shortly.
Queensland tourism industry focuses on the future BUILDING the long-term success of tourism is the focus of a partnership agreement signed between the government and the Queensland tourism industry at the close of the second annual DestinationQ forum held at the end of August, 2013. The agreement was the result of an intensive two-day forum at the Gold Coast where almost 400 industry and government representatives debated and agreed on the key directions tourism needs to take to secure long term prosperity. Minister for Tourism, Jann Stuckey said the forum was a huge success with the industry and government working collaboratively to develop long term strategies for the industry. “Over the past year we have cemented a strong partnership
with industry and set the course for our shared goal to double overnight visitor expenditure by 2020,” Ms Stuckey said. “Through this partnership agreement we are thinking longterm and planning for success. “The delegates at this forum have, through extensive discussion, debate and voting, identified the priority directions the industry needs to take to secure its future. “The last two days have shown how passionate and committed the tourism industry is and I am confident tourism has a fantastic future in Queensland and will continue to be a strong pillar of our thriving economy.” The forum developed major directions to focus our efforts in areas such as service quality, infrastructure, investment, markets and new product development.
The partnership agreement was co-signed by Premier Campbell Newman and Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) Chair Shane O’Reilly. QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said the DestinationQ partnership reinforced the value of the tourism industry as a major driver of the Queensland economy. “The Queensland Tourism Industry Council, on behalf of the state’s tourism industry, is pleased to re-commit to our partnership and strive for change to position Queensland strongly for the future,” Mr Gschwind said. The 20-year plan for tourism will be finalised before the end of the year, with the results to feed into the Queensland Plan process. The full agreement is available at www. destq.com.au
Free web workshops and mentoring BUSINESSES and community organisations can learn how to harness the power of the Web by participating in a new training initiative due to start in November. Through the Digital Enterprise Program Round 5, RDA FNQ&TS led a consortium bid with key regional stakeholders and secured $285,000 over two years, to develop and deliver a program that will result in small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and community organisations better utilizing online opportunities to create business efficiencies and enhanced productivity. The program is funded through the Commonwealth Department for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. The program will involve workshops followed by one-onone mentoring for businesses and organisations throughout the region, from the Cassowary Coast
to the Torres Strait and across to the Gulf and the Tablelands. The successful bid can be attributed to the strength of the consortium behind the pitch, which includes FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils, Advance Cairns, Cairns Chamber of Commerce, Cairns Regional Council, Gulf Savannah Development, Cape York Sustainable Futures, Digital Economy Cairns and advice provided by TNQ Institute of TAFE. The program will involve free workshops which will commence in November, followed by four hours of free one-on-one mentoring. On-site mentoring is where businesses will see first hand how they can enrich their business through online platforms. Some sectors, such as tourism, use the internet well, however the take-up of online opportunities in general is quite low across other sectors. Most small businesses are busy running day-to-day
operations and have not had the resources to ‘catch up’ on how the internet and social media platforms can grow product offering through relatively inexpensive means online. This free training will support SMEs and not-for-profits to instigate two-way online conversations with customers and clients that will help them to stay ahead of competitors. The Digital Enterprise Program is a key element of RDA FNQ&TS’s Strategic Priority Package for Regional Connectivity and follows the launch of the Dive into Digital initiative. The Dive into Digital project highlighted that there are hundreds of businesses out there keen to learn the basics of marketing their business through online platforms. Key elements such as the ‘rules of online engagement’ and reputation risk management will be covered by the program.

Ghost nets are fishing nets that are lost or abandoned at sea, representing a major threat for marine fauna and an ongoing problem for indigenous saltwater communities across Australia’s top end including many Cape York communities. From the Chairman Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman
You may have seen the photo in last week’s ‘Bully’ of Weipa Town Authority’s (WTA) newest Member - ernest Madua (Junior) - taken with our Ceo Ian Pressley after taking the oath of Service. How important this was for WTA cannot be understated. To have a Traditional Owner sitting at the table with us as decisions are made on the future of Weipa is absolutely critical; his connection as Councillor to Napranum Shire Council also invaluable. We are looking forward to having Ernest working with us well into the future. Several issues have been at the forefront of the WTA agenda for the past 15 months; acknowledgement by government as a Local Authority, eligibility for government funding and improvements to town infrastructure. All three aspirations came together recently when the State Government acknowledged WTA for funding eligibility under the Royalties for the Region; thus allowing us to ‘express an interest’ (along with other mineral resource rich regions) in funding from the second round pool of nearly $50 million. Water upgrades, kerb and channelling, road improvements and sewer have been highlighted. The funding is competitive, but hopeful we have provided a compelling case for upgrade funding in Weipa. Only in the past few weeks the Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli further acknowledged the WTA as a Local Authority by approving significant funding to improve our communication capability during major weather events here in town; along with his personal invitation to participate in a history making Local Government Forum in Townsville that addressed local government sustain-

ability. The move to self-determination by way of a Weipa Shire Council was a key point of discussion throughout the forum by some of the other seventyfive Queensland mainstream Councils. The WTA does from time to time become involved in much broader regional politics. This is important for many reasons, particularly if it means ‘decisions’ are being made outside the region that impact in a negative way on Weipa. I hope you agree that we were voted into our positions of trust to do this on your behalf. That is why over the past few days we have stood beside our fellow Councillors from all Councils across the Cape in condemnation of the Federal LNP policy to further empower Noel Pearson in the field of education and governance on Cape York. For Weipa and Western Cape College this is very concerning given the significant levels of Federal Funding that are currently channelled towards our kid’s education. It is unknown if Pearson’s control of these funds would deliver the same outcomes or even same levels of funding the College currently experiences. This LNP philosophy is flawed on so many levels; community consultation being fundamental. On a very positive note, to the Bull Ride committee; congratulations on another great weekend and a fantastic promotion for Weipa. The event goes from strength to strength, and little wonder it is the reigning 2012 Weipa Event of the Year. And to the small committee that worked so hard to reprise the ‘Sunday Sessions at the Stubby Hut” last Sunday; fantastic family fun, great afternoon, unbelievable kebabs, fine fish n’ chips, good music and we are all looking forward to Sunday, October 6. The community is the beneficiary!
We are now looking at Mark Ch 15 vs 38-47. It was not the strange yet powerful things that happened when the Lord was dying that caused the army officer looking on to say that Jesus was truly the Son of God, but the way in which he died. Wonder what that was? Perhaps the answer is in John Ch 19 v 30 where the Lord proclaimed “It is finished” and died, and the way the words were called out perhaps sounded like divine authority. Also, through all these mysterious earthquakes and sun being darkened, it’s reported that the women remained to watch on over the body of Christ.
By Rev. Michael Connolly
I’ve visited many churches of different denominations over the years, especially in smaller towns, and I notice that where the churches (the body of Christ) are almost empty, it’s the women who at the end keep watching over them. Interesting! Joseph of Arimathea eventually took the Lord down off the cross before sunset because no Godly Jew would allow an executed Jew to remain on the cross after sundown and especially over the Sabbath. Deuteronomy Ch 21 vs 22-23 read, “If someone has been put to death for a crime and the body is hung on a post, it is not to
remain there overnight. It must be buried the same day, because a dead body hanging on a post brings God’s curse on the land. Bury the body, so that you will not defile the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Joseph of Arimathea, who along with the Pharisee called Nicodemus, were members of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish Council in Jerusalem, and they argued against Jesus being crucified. (Read John Ch 3 vs 1-12 and 7 vs 45-52). Praise God for true friends. Rev Michael Connolly

Jardine River bridge a high priority for KAP candidate great cost which people just can’t afford. “The road to the south of the Jardine now has quite a bit of bitumen and is suitable for road trains to carry freight. Industry representatives tell me this works out at about half the present cost of getting general freight to the towns.” “I realise the road would not be open in the wet season, but it has improved greatly in the past five years and with more funding the Peninsula road could be made much more flood proof.” The Northern Pe-

ninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) earns a significant income from the Jardine ferry operation, but it is very restricted having a maxi-
mum weight limit of 36 tonnes. “We have to find out exactly how much the sea-freight costs actually are,” Mr Ryan said. “We can then put together a cost/benefit analysis that will prove that building a bridge will produce real returns!” “A new bridge would bring much prosperity to the region, cutting freight costs and opening up the area for more tourists and some industry.” Mr Ryan is touring the Cape and Torres Strait this week.
Vote Greens to stop Abbott getting total control: Kloot QueensLand Greens candidate Jo Kloot has urged voters in Leichhardt worried about tony abbott gaining absolute power to vote Greens after a new poll showed most Queenslanders are opposed to the Coalition having a majority in both houses of Parliament. The national poll, released today Saturday, August 31, showed 61 per cent of Queensland is opposed to Tony Abbott and the Coalition having absolute power in the next parliament. “Tony Abbott wants total control of the parliament and for the Senate to wave through policies he won’t even come clean on,” said Ms Kloot. “The poll shows that most Queenslanders don’t want one party to have total control because when that happens,
we end up with policies like WorkChoices. “Voting for the Greens in the Senate is the best way to guarantee a strong voice for the issues that matter and stop Tony Abbott getting total control.” Hundreds of thousands of progressive Queensland voters, including ones in Leichhardt electorate may be trapped into electing a right-wing candidate to the state’s last Senate seat. The sixth Senate seat most likely will be a race between Katter Australian Party’s (KAP) James Blundell and the Greens’ Adam Stone. The trap for Labor voters is that their preferences go to KAP. Similarly, a vote for the Democrats and some other progressive parties ends up being a vote for Bob Katter.
“We all lose if Tony Abbott gets absolute power in Parliament,” Jo Kloot said. “The Greens stand for a caring Australia and for what matters.” The Greens have also launched a new television advertising campaign on the danger of Tony Abbott taking control of the Senate.

voting centres are available at www.aec.gov.au/ where or by calling 13 23 26. While applications for postal votes may be lodged with the AEC until 6pm on Thursday, 5 September, Mr Killesteyn cautioned that time is running out. “If you need a postal vote, don’t leave it to the very last minute and risk missing out. It’s likely that for some locations it could already be too late for the AEC to get ballot papers to you, despite our best efforts, and you may need to consider the option of a pre-poll vote in person rather than postal voting.”
“If voting by post is your only option, you can complete a postal vote application form online at www.aec.gov.au, pick up a form at any Australia Post outlet or AEC office, or call 13 23 26 to have an application form sent to you,” Mr Killesteyn said. Voters are eligible for an early vote if on election day they will be outside their electorate; more than 8km from a polling place; approaching childbirth; seriously ill or caring for someone who is; or unable to attend a polling place due to religious beliefs, fear for personal safety, disability or work commitments.

THE Labor Government will commit $344,163 funding under the Regional Development Australia Fund Round Five for three priority projects on the Western Cape – two at Aurukun and one at Kowanyama. Local councils had identified projects in their communities as top priorities to drive future growth. The funding will allow Aurukun Shire Council to build a pathway to link the town centre to the local airport and renovate
the Aurukun Indigenous Knowledge Centre, and the additional funding will mean Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council can upgrade the local slaughterhouse and butcher shop. Labor candidate for Leichhardt, Billy Gordon, welcomed the Federal funding and said it reflected Labor’s commitment to support strong, prosperous regional and local communities. “It’s good to see strong economic investment from Federal Labor to
build local infrastructure in Indigenous communities on the Cape,” he said. “Funding for these three projects is a win for the local communities on the Western Cape.” These projects come on top of the Labor Government’s record investment in regional Australia, including the National Plan for School Improvement, the National Broadband Network and the Roads to Recovery program. Funding for the project is already in the Budget and will
be allocated from the Federal Government’s Regional Development Australia Found Round Five. Under this round, grants were allocated to every council in Australia, giving each the opportunity to make their community’s voice heard by submitting priority local projects. The Labor Government will work with local councils to ensure projects identified by local communities meet value-for-money assessments and program guidelines.

THE Coalition’s plan for a National Stronger Regions Fund will be a massive boost for Cape York and the Torres Strait, areas which have been sorely neglected under Labor’s Regional Development Australia Fund, says Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch. “Time and time again I’ve spoken out about the disproportionate amounts of funds that have gone to Labor or key independent seats,” said Mr Entsch. “Here in Leichhardt, in four rounds, we have had just two ‘successful’ projects worth around $5.5 million – out of a total of $575 million. “The Torres Strait Sea Walls, a project that blatantly didn’t fit the criteria, was meant to receive $5 million from Round 2 towards a project costing $22 million – but more than a year on, the funding still has not been released. “The other project, in Round 3, was $480,000 to upgrade the Northern Peninsula Area airport refuelling services – hardly an innovative or exciting economic driver. “Round 5 projects are currently being assessed – but I’m not holding my breath.” The Coalition’s plan, released last

A boost to your ego will come just when you need it. However, don’t rely on others to create your self-worth. Romance. A recent comment may have made you a little self-conscious, even though it was meant as a compliment. You were probably expecting something less positive.

An important boost to your career is just around the corner. Don’t do anything now which could “rock the boat”. Stay under the radar. Romance. Be careful not to let the cat out of the bag! A secret which you have promised to keep to yourself may slip out, without realising it.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
Although you need plenty of security, there is a danger that you could get stuck in a rut. Try to find a balance. Take a risk or two! Romance. This will be a very good time for some quiet relaxation with your partner. You will need a bit of extra comforting. Let your guard down and relax.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
A strange encounter may leave you mystified. You will meet this person again. Be sure to question them about your first meeting. Romance. You may find that you are getting less attention than you need from your partner. Let your needs be known and you may receive exactly that.

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. SpOrTS reporters occupy a strange place in the newspaper world. On the one hand, their reports and photos are the most popular in their papers. Every Australian reader has a weak spot for one sport or another, anything from footy to women’s synchronised swimming, and the sports pages are why they buy the paper. They need sports reporters. On the other hand the effete intelligentsia of reporting, who get to sit next to the editor’s office and write about politics, arts and culture, feel they are the only ones who really matter. After all, they can spell long words like ‘marmalade’ without using Spellchecker. As a matter of course, only they can be trusted to report on the important stories. Still, in these days of cost cutting and staff shortages, sometimes sports reporters are called
number of options available for the finals and has been seeking feedback from all participating teams. “There has been interest from Aurukun and Laura in terms of playing over the finals weekend as well as the possibility of playing a number of junior games as well as a women’s match. NPA has also shown interest in attending,” Mr Maiden said.
upon to leave the touch-line and investigate stories of real and touching human interest. One of those stories happened last week, under the headline NRL Player denies biting Opponent’s Penis. Of course, this needs to be handled in a very sensitive way. Let me re-phrase that; this story needs to be handled in a very sensitive way. After all, the alleged biter is a very large gentleman with no neck, and he might object. He has already denied that any biting of any nature took place. Contradicting him, the alleged victim felt so strongly about the event that he wanted to present evidence to the referee out on the field. The referee declined the invitation and referred him to a post-match hearing. How can any reporter safely handle a story like this? The victim is refusing to go into detail, and a photograph is out of the question. The alleged perpetrator comes from a culture that gets very touchy about male to male intimacy. He is also a member of a motorcycle gang and they are notoriously unfriendly if one of their members is impugned. Perhaps this is a story the superior reporters prefer to leave to their juniors. We will just have to wait and see - or at least, hear about - what comes out in the disciplinary hearing. Watch the sports pages!

AFL wrap-up with Dallas IT has all happened since last week’s article - the Dons have been smashed by the AFL and Carlton have made AFL and medical history by un-choking and coming back from the dead! The biggest penalty in AFL history has been handed down to Essendon for the drugs/supplements scandal. They have been booted from the 2013 finals and will be allocated 9th place this season. A two million dollar fine, Coach James Hird suspended for 12 months, as well as loss of draft picks for the next two years has shocked many. The Bombers are likely to take legal action, as James Hird has done, so this is far from the last we have heard about this. The flow-on effects of dropping the Bombers out of the finals was intriguing to say the least. Just when the finals race was decided by Carton’s round 22 choke, suddenly it was all open again. Mathematically teams down to about 12th could still make it, depending on results and percentage. Carlton, the Lions and North Melbourne were the likely candidates due to percentage to make the cut if the other sides lost. So the last round really had some interest after all. Carlton to their credit, came from well behind in what looked like another choke, this time against the Power in the last AFL game at Football Park in Adelaide. The Navy Blues sensationally snuck home by a point to earn their place in September. The Lions had a disappointing end to the year, going down to the Cats at Kardinia Park, also by just one point. If these one point games had their results reversed the Lions would have been in the finals, funnily enough without their coach. But it wasn’t to be, despite the prayers of the Lion’s faithful. Poor old “Norf” showed us what could have been by beating Collingwood. Carlton’s one point win also cost the Kangaroos a finals berth. How the Arden Road crew will be ruing those half-dozen losses by less than a kick this season. If they had snuck into the finals they were capable of toppling anyone on their day. The end of the regular season has seen Hawthorn’s Jarryd Roughead win the Coleman Medal with 68 goals this year. Last week also saw legend of the game, Kevin Sheedy, retire after an amazing career spanning six decades and 1000-plus games as a player and coach. Now for the finals . . . Friday night has a repeat of last week’s blockbuster between the Hawks and Swans. Buddy will likely be missing due to his bump last week and probable one week suspension. His absence could make it a close game considering the Hawks narrow, come from behind win, last week. Geelong play Fremantle at Simmonds Stadium (Kardinia Pk) and Freo will not be without a chance having rested over half their top squad last week. This will be a show of force between two opposite styles, the defensive Dockers and attacking Cats. This first week of September will see two teams bow out in the elimination finals. These matches feature Collingwood versus Port Adelaide, while Richmond take on Carlton. Both games should be entertaining displays. No love will be lost between traditional rivals the Tigers and Blues in what should be a full house at the MCG. Could this be Richmond’s year? My tips: Hawthorn, Fremantle, Collingwood and Richmond. That’s the wrap for the regular season. If your team bowed out I hope you had an enjoyable season anyway. I’m looking forward to a fantastic finals series. With my Suns out and building for finals next year, I will be getting on the yellow and black in their first run for the flag in over a decade. Go the Tigers! That’s the wrap! Bring on the finals! NRL wrap-up with Karl OFF-FIELD dramas were the main talking point of this round, taking away from the good football displayed leading into the finals. Friday night’s matches kicked off round 25, with the Knights beating the Broncos and the Rabbitohs coming from behind and beating the Tigers in a thriller. The Rabbitohs “Burgess Brothers” broke a 103-year old record having four brothers play for the same team in a game. Super Saturday had three games, with all games being one-sided affairs. The Warriors smashed the Raiders with their ad-lib style of footy, the Bulldogs overcame a fightback from the Panthers, and the Sea Eagles got an easy win over the Storm. Two games were played on Sunday, with Matty Bowen’s Cowboys getting a good win over the Sharks, and the Titans pulling the upset of the round winning against minor premiership contenders, the Roosters. Monday night’s game was very entertaining with the Eels beating the Dragons in the end. Looking into round 26 the last round before the finals start, we see the reemergence of Thursday night footy. On Thursday the Broncos will take on the Bulldogs. Friday night will only have one game played in what is shaping up to be a minor premiership decider with the Rabbitohs taking on the Roosters. These teams are first and second place, and whoever wins this game will be minor premiers. Super Saturday will have three games played, with the Dragons going into battle with the Warriors, the Storm going head to head with the Titans, and the mighty Cowboys looking for a win against the Tigers, in what will be Matty Bowen’s last home game in North Queensland. Super Sunday will also have three matches played with no Monday night footy this week. Firstly the Sea Eagles will play the Panthers, the Knights will look for a win over the Eels to cement a spot in the top eight, and the Raiders will take on the Sharks. Karl’s tips: Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Warriors, Storm, Cowboys, Sea Eagles, Eels and Raiders. In local news, the Cape Cluster finals are being held this weekend in Coen. Kowanyama Wallabies are the favourites, not losing a game in the past three seasons, but anything can happen on the day. Yours in footy, Karl

Rugby league legend Williams calls it a day NorthErN Pride stalwart and former NrL star ty Williams has decided to hang up his Intrust Super Cup boots after a glittering career in rugby league. The 32-year-old former North Queensland Cowboys hero, who played in the Cowboys’ only ever NRL Grand Final in 2005, will say farewell to Pride fans at the end of the 2013 Intrust Super Cup season. The Innisfail product, who has played 77 games for the Pride and scored 31 tries, said he hoped to win his first ever Grand Final in his last year of playing. “I really want to win a premiership with the Northern Pride before I bow out,” the former Queensland Maroons star said. “I missed out in 2010 when we

won our only ever grand final, and I was a little unsure about whether to play again in 2013, especially with another knee injury to recover from. “But JD (Pride coach Jason Demetriou) convinced me to give it another crack, and I really feel we can win it this year.” Williams says he has no regrets over his glittering career, in which he scored 85 tries in 151 games for the Cowboys and is the Townsvillebased NRL club’s second highest try scorer of all time, only behind fullback Matt Bowen. “I’m lucky enough to have had a fantastic career in rugby league, playing in an NRL Grand Final, fulfilling my dream of playing for Queensland, and making many lifetime friends along the way,” he said.
“But I’m not getting any younger, and with a young family to consider, I think now’s the right time to stop playing in the state comp. “I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me over my career, and everyone at the Pride for their support over the past few years, especially the coaching staff, players and fans. “I was tempted to go around again for the Pride next year, but although it’s been a tough decision to make, I know it’s the right one.” A keen golfer, Williams will now return to his home town to work as development officer at the Leprechauns, and continue in rugby league as captain-coach for Innisfail in the CDRL A Grade competition next year.

Darryl French with a 90cm Barramundi, caught in the Mission River.
A WEIPA Sportfishing Club outing was held the weekend of August 17 and 18 with Estuary Cod as the target species. Five members weighed in for the weekend. Rod and Fiona Bielby fished a couple of their secret spots around the harbour and had a mixed bag of Barramundi and Queenfish. Fiona managed the only target species of the weekend, an Estuary Cod, to take out the women’s title with 315 points. Rod was pipped at the post by an awesome capture of a 3kg Queenfish on 1kg line by Gaven Roberts which gave him 450 points. Gaven’s daughter Emmy took out the juniors with a Grunter landed on 4kg line. My day was pretty ugly having several bust-offs before landing a couple of GTs on 4kg line. Gaven and Emmy won the lure prizes. The next competition is on September 14 and 15 and the target species is Fingermark. not give the Weipa Sportfishing Club a go. We have a competition weekend once a month with people on shift work able to fish two days before if they are working over the weekend. We also have an end-of-year function and prize giving for winners of various categories with points accumulated over the course of the year. As the name suggests we are about sport fishing and about trying to catch a variety of fish that inhabit our local waterways on the lightest line that is most comfortable for you and points are awarded accordingly. The lighter the line, the higher the points. For some club members 15kg is their comfort zone and for some extreme members 1kg is the go. The club is affiliated with ANSA (Australian National Sportfishing Association) so if chasing Australian records are on your agenda we can cater for your needs with certified scales to weigh-in that record. Our club is also participating in a fishery research program where members tag certain species of fish and submit their
tag forms to Suntag where it is entered into a data base. To date a number of members have had tagged fish recaptured and this has been an important tool for researchers as they can track movements and growth rates of fish. The club is also an excellent place to broaden your fishing knowledge and skills. I know for myself, during the course of my five year membership, I have learnt a wealth of knowledge about our local species, where to find them and effective ways of catching them. You will find within the club some of the most experienced anglers in Weipa who are only too happy to share their knowledge, but our primary objective is to have a lot of fun participating in a pastime we enjoy. We encourage families and in the past we have had a strong junior section who have competed well in the State titles. Anyone interested in having a look at the club or wanting to join please contact Darryl or Simone French on 4069 7967 or email frenchds@hotmail.com – Tight lines, Frenchy

Pennefather Barra are scarce but just offshore and out of the wind there have been some good Trout and big Queenies taking lures and Prawns. I haven’t had any offshore reports from around here this week but as the weather improves so will the fishing. My pick of the week would have to be up around the fingers in the Hey system using live bait and dead bait you should be able to snare a feed.

SPRING has sprung and fishing in the estuaries is really hotting up. Water temperatures are getting up 28 degrees in some of the creeks and it is showing in the willingness for the Barra to bite. The majority of the Barra are small with most fish under legal-size but what they lack in size they more than make up for in numbers. On one snag John Dean and I pulled over 10 fish and then moved on to another location. We accounted for in one session Barra, Cod, Fingermark, Salmon and Bream falling to lures and baits with the biggest surprise, no Catfish! I was talking to Tacklebox the other day and he was telling me that Darren the Tackle World skipper found a metery barra for a client that took a livey. He also said that local ambo Dennis O’Sullivan got a metery as well, but they both were tight-lipped as to where they were caught. Up in the Hey system a great bag of Grunter was caught by Trish from Woolies. There have been some big fish patrolling the Evans Landing wharf at night with big Queenies, Barra, Cod and some unstoppable monsters taking live and dead bait. The weather and tides have been against us fishos but there has been some calmer waters in the smaller creeks that allowed
