Diesel Fitter receives Skill360 top award
$2.50 inc. GST
Dog poisoning allegations: Deputy Chair calls for calm WEIPA online social networks have been buzzing this week with allegations of dog baiting in the area. While several dogs have reportedly died from what appears to be poisoning there has been no official confirmation of this and Weipa Town Authority deputy mayor, Stretch Noonan is asking pet owners not to panic. “As far as I know there has been no confirmation the dogs were baited,” Mr Noonan said on Tuesday. “If in fact someone is throwing poisoned meat into people’s yards this is a serious offence and must be dealt with by the Police. “Not only is it devastating for people to lose their pets in such a distressing fashion but there is a very real possibility a small child could also come into contact with the deadly poison.” Anyone finding something they believe could be a “bait” in their yard is asked to take it to the Weipa Police Station for testing. “If you have reason to believe your pet has been poisoned it is very important to not only have the animal tested by the vet, but also report it to Police,” Mr Noonan said.

VICTORY SPEECH: Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch. Photos courtesy Facebook.com/thesocialguy
DESPITE a strong swing against him, particularly in Cape York’s Indigenous communities, LNP Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch retained his seat in Saturday’s Federal election. Although counting in the division had not been completed at time of publication results were not expected to change. Mr Entsch was elected with 44.96 per cent of the vote, followed by first-time Labor Party candidate Billy Gordon who recorded 33.19 per cent. The Palmer United Party candidate Bruce Gibson recorded 8.66 per cent of Leichhardt votes ahead of Greens candidate Johanna Kloot with 6.43 per cent. Mr Entsch told the Western Cape Bulletin he greatly appreciated the support that he received from the people of Weipa. “Along with the outstanding efforts of the volunteers who who set up and manned booths, and scrutineered the votes. Everyone involved can share in Saturday’s success,” Mr Entsch said. “I think we are on the cusp of some great things and just looking at what is proposed to happen in this region, I think we’re in for some very prosperous times. “However if we – as a government – don’t assist in facilitating these opportunities, in three years’ time we will be judged accordingly,” Mr Entsch warned. “I’d like to emphasise that Cape York is definitely open for business, and I look forward to working with the Weipa community in making sure we maximise our opportunities, particularly through the White Paper on Northern Australia.”
Thank you Cape York THE strong support from the people of Cape York communities was a humbling experience for me as a Labor candidate for Leichhardt. I feel honoured and I’m sorry I couldn’t get over the line

in the national election held on Saturday (September 7). We bucked the national trend with the Labor Party receiving only a slight swing against us in Leichhardt. If the results on Cape York were replicated around the electorate, I would be your local member and that gives me a sense of both pride and humility.

EASING HOUSING PRESSURE: Weipa Town Authority director of planning and infrastructure Joan Stratton, Emily Spark (Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Commercial Infrastructure), Golf Links Views developer Aaron Johnson (Weipa Cabinets & Building), Shane Spagnol (Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Commercial Infrastructure) and Nathan Lickfold (Earthbound Constructions) at the recently completed Golf Links Views accommodation complex in Golf Links Estate. CONSTRUCTION has begun on 80 new properties around town in an initiative launched by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. The employee housing initiative will see vacant lots developed into two, three and four bedroom townhouses and houses. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager, Operations, Gareth Manderson said the project will help alleviate the cost of housing in Weipa by increasing the supply of properties available. “We have been talking with the Weipa Town Authority about the housing pressures and possible solutions for quite some time, and construction has now commenced after conditional approved was received,” Mr Manderson said. A mix of local and Cairnsbased developers have secured the contracts for the $35 million project, including Weipa
Cabinets & Building, McIvor, Earth Bound Constructions and Remote Building Solutions. Construction on the properties is expected to be completed on a rolling basis between September this year and January 2014. “The second stage of the Golf Links Estate is also nearing completion, and we are working with the Weipa Town Authority to commence building,” Mr Manderson said. “Similar to stage one, blocks of land will be for sale through a ballot system, with preference given to employees, then contractors before release and sale to the broader community.” For more information about these housing projects, visit the Community Relations Building (located behind Weipa Bowls Club), phone the freecall hotline 1800 707 633 or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com

Communications outage a timely reminder A FIRE which swept through bush along the Weipa to Mapoon area last Tuesday completely destroyed the Telstra Repeater at Tent Pole Creek. The incident, which caused the loss of communications to the Mapoon area for several days serves as a timely reminder to “be prepared”, according to Peter Rinaudo, Area Director (Northern Region) Emergency Management Qld (EMQ). “Households and communities need to be prepared and EMQ is currently working with communities on the Get Ready Queensland campaign,” Mr Rinaudo said. Get Ready Queensland is about building resilience, Mr Rinaudo said. “It is more than just

good preparation or effective response. Individuals, families and the community as a whole need to identify how potential incidents and events may impact their lives and safety, and plan now for those situations. “Incidents like this fire could not only have impacted telecommunications but also power or water supply, and people need to plan now and be prepared for that, particularly in the
more remote areas of Cape York. Mr Rinaudo encourages people to visit the Get Ready Queensland website for ideas on how to prepare their households for incidents and events. (http:// www.disaster.qld. gov.au/getready/) “Another way the communities of the Western Cape are playing an important role in the Get Ready Queensland campaign is through the Disaster Manage-
ment Plans for the communities of the area,” he said. “The Weipa and Mapoon Local Disaster Management Plans will be assessed for compliance today (Tuesday, September 10) and the Napranum Local Disaster Management Plan will be assessed later this month. “This will highlight areas of improvement to be addressed before the coming storm season and into the future.”
Thancoupie’s Bursary Fund up and running FOR young creative people of Western Cape Yo r k P e n i n s u l a , a n exciting opportunity opened up in August: the chance to study art away from home. It was the wish of a great artist from the Weipa region that a bursary for art be created in her name. Dr Thancoupie Gloria Fletcher AO was a highly respected Thaynakwith elder and the last fluent speaker of her language, Thaynakwith. She grew to be an internationally famous potter in the 1970s and inspired many people who came into contact with her, not only through her magnificent ceramics and sculpture but also as a teacher, story teller, writer and recorder of language. Thancoupie’s tribal daughter, Ms Jeannie Little, said, “The Thancoupie Bursary is a unique scholarship for study in the arts offered to Indigenous youth of the Western Cape York communities.
“This was the dream of our great Queensland Indigenous artist, Thancoupie, who sadly passed away in 2011.” Through financial support, Bursary recipients are given encouragement to study successfully outside their own community. Annual bursaries – one each year – are offered on a competitive basis. The board of directors working to raise money for Thancoupie’s Bursary Fund recently launched a website (http://www. thancoupiebursary.com), which is the best way to find out how to apply. Ms Little stressed that applicants should go to the website to launch a user-friendly application. “I encourage every young creative person
who has a passion to go further with art studies to download the two-page application form.” Ms Little said the Board was honoured to announce that Ms Leneen Forde AC became the Patron of Thancoupie’s Bursary Fund this year. The Chancellor of Griffith University, Ms Forde served as the twenty-second Governor of Queensland from 1992 until 1997, and like Thancoupie, her generous heart for Indigenous youth changed lives. Thancoupie worked unceasingly to create a pathway for the youth of her community and region to follow her lead and learn new skills in the wider world, while continuing their cultures and languages, their dances and songs. She believed these attributes instil the pride and confidence to face any future. For further information, email: info@ thancoupiebursary.com

Queensland Ecotourism Plan released
The
Eye f the
o Cyclone
An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.
Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) advocate compulsory eco-accreditation for operators on national parks. Shane O’Reilly, Chair of QTIC, said the quality and diversity of Queensland’s natural environment were the state’s strongest advantages in a very competitive domestic and international tourism market. “Many tour operators base their experiences on the natural environment, and it is critical that industry works closely with government and other stakeholders to ensure we maximise this opportunity,” Mr O’Reilly said. “QTIC will be actively supporting the implementation of the actions in the Plan.” View the Plan and details on how to submit an EOI for ecotourism facilities on national parks at www.nprsr.qld.gov.au
They say people get the governments they deserve, so I can only say, Sorry, Sir. I really didn’t mean it to happen. I promise I will be a better person in future, if only you’ll let us have some one to respect next time around. In the mean time, Oberfuhrer Campbell Newman had a very thoughtful Sunday breakfast. Now he has got what he thought he wanted – an Abbott vistory – he is was wondering what it will mean for Queensland. In theory, Tony Ears will be his mate, right? In practice, Tony will be taking a leaf out of
the Oberfuhrer’s own book and laying about left and right with a very sharp axe. Except, I can’t see him being too hard on his own patch around Sydney. Or Western Australia, because they pay the bills. Queensland, on the other hand, well, they are different. A taste of Federal discipline will do them good . . . Oh well, we’re getting good at limiting our ambitions now. We’ll just have to pull our necks in and hope all those nice foreign tourists will spend enough dollars to keep food on our table.

So, that’s that. Rudd the Weasel has gone down in flames, and we are now the property of Tony Ears, and his sponsor Murdoch. Can’t say I’m enthusiastic about it, but then I wouldn’t have raised much of a cheer if the election had gone the other way either.
new vision for ecotourism in Queensland, which will be achieved through five strategic priorities: • Delivering world-class experiences • Facilitating best practice and innovation • Raising the profile of Queensland’s ecotourism experiences • Fostering thriving operators, and • Embracing a partnership approach between the tourism industry, government, community and Traditional Owners. “The Ecotourism Plan proposes 43 actions to be delivered over three years to ensure Queensland is a world leader in ecotourism,” Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey said. “There is full support across government and industry. QuEEnSland’S future as australia’s top naturebased tourism destination is all mapped out, with the release of the Ecotourism Plan 2013–2020, at the second annual destinationQ forum at the end of august. The plan provides operators, government, community and other stakeholders with clear direction on how Queensland can leverage its competitive advantages, while conserving the natural environment. “Amendments to the Nature Conservation Act allow the development of privately owned, permanent ecotourism facilities on national parks in Queensland for the first time,” said National Parks Minister Steve Dickson. Mr Dickson said the draft plan received indicated a high level of support, particularly from tourism stakeholders, with the majority of submissions identifying resource protection and conservation as critical to maintaining Queensland’s high-quality natural values. “The Plan addresses these through a range of actions focused on best-practice tourism operations and management of national parks to ensure their natural values are preserved,” Mr Dickson said. New research council aims to improve kids’ health Improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids – that’s the goal of the newly established National Health and medical research Council (NHmrC) Centre of research excellence for Improving Health Services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children. Apunipima Cape York Health Council’s Paediatrician and Public Health Physician Dr Alan Ruben and Public Health Medical Officer Dr Mark Wenitong are part of the Centre’s leadership group along with former Australian of the Year Dr Fiona Stanley and a range of other health experts. The five year program, led by Professor Karen Edmond, a paediatrician from the University of Western Australia, sees academic institutions and service providers collaborate to find new ways to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Apunipima Public Health Medical Officer, Dr Mark Wenitong.
“We are delighted to be taking a leading role in the Centre of Research Excellence in Improving Health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children,” Dr Wenitong said. “Apunipima’s mandate is to improve the health of Cape York people – being able to access and commission research into children’s health will give us the tools we need to change policy,
practice and health outcomes.” “We welcome this investment into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health which highlight the importance of including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in these kinds of initiatives in order to achieve culturally – appropriate, community – based solutions to endemic health problems.” “We have less than 20 years to Close the Gap – this initiative is a step in the right direction and we call on the next government to continue to invest in the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.” The Centre has three themes: 1. Generate new knowledge that leads to improved health outcomes 2. Research transfer into health policy and practice 3. Training and capacity building of researchers.

THE Old Testament states that anyone hanging on a tree becomes a curse, but see how God has turned that curse onto Jesus for our sake. Galatians Ch 3 v 13 points out, “But by becoming a curse for us Christ has redeemed us from the curse that the Law brings; for the scripture says, “Anyone who is hanged on a tree is under God’s curse.” There were two members of the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea and it was Joseph who took it upon himself to front Caesar for Jesus’ body. Caesar and it was what Caesar said. He expressed surprise that Jesus was already dead and to make sure of this, he summoned the army officer and asked if Jesus had been dead a long enough time. When the officer confirmed that Jesus was indeed dead a long time, he handed his body over to Joseph. The crucifixions were carried out in such a way that the people being crucified were supposed to die in sheer agony for at least a day or so. That’s why Caesar’s surprise. But Jesus had the power to give up his own spirit, rather than it be taken from him in death. (John Ch 10
vs 17-18). Joseph, being a rich man, took the body of Jesus and put it in his own grave that was cut out of solid rock in the side of a mountain, and it was built in such a way that a huge round rock could be rolled across the entrance to the cave. Grave robbers were very active in those days and especially targeted rich people’s graves. Many women witnessed when Jesus’ was taken down by Joseph and where he was put to rest, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph among them. (See Ch 15 v 40 ). Jesus is Lord. Rev Michael Connolly

The town of Maytown was once the “capital” of the Palmer River goldfield and was at its most prominent and populous in the late 1870s. Maytown began as a rough bush camp for the original gold miners but rapidly grew with the influx of large numbers of miners. Originally called Butcher’s Gully, it later became known as Edwardstown after the local butcher Jack Edwards. The settlement was formally surveyed in 1875 by A.C. MacMillan and named Maytown in honour of his daughter. As with similar gold rush s e t t l e m e n t s , M a y t o w n ’s growth was rapid and by 1876 there were twelve hotels, six stores, three bakers, three tobacconists as well as banks and a post office. In 1877 a newspaper, the
Golden Age was established, later to be replaced by the Palmer Chronicle. The first crushing mill was established here in 1876, on the Wardens Reserve, marking the end of the early alluvial gold seeking period and the beginning of the deep reef mining period. Maytown’s early growth steadied in the 1880s and 1890s, however the town was still a prominent centre in the Palmer River area. This early period of growth and relative stability is shown by the establishment of a branch of the Government Savings Bank, a state school, courthouse, school of arts, hospital, police barracks as well as a miners’ institute. By 1900, the population was around 700. However, Maytown’s growth declined after this time, hastened by
the diminishing gold yields and by the 1950s the town was virtually deserted. The residents of Maytown, particularly during its early period, saw their town as the administrative centre of the area and believed its future was assured. The presence of stone kerbing and channelling, rare in such towns, confirms this and is evidence of the residents’ belief that Maytown would remain an important centre. The photograph above, dating from the 1880s shows one of the town’s main stores with some of the residents posed along its front.
From left to right are J.W. Gibson, Journalist; T.Q. Jones; John Davis, Hotel Keeper; Andrew Irvine, Carpenter and John Riley. The child shown second from the left is unidentified. Today, little remains from Maytown’s glory days, with the only physical remnants being the remains of the baker’s oven, some stone kerbing and channelling as well as the town cemetery. However, in acknowledgement of Maytown’s importance in the history of Queensland, these remnants are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

3rd 6 147 THE first week of finals is done and dusted! Piri10 The Hawks reign supreme while the other Clarky 4th 5 146 games were all upsets. Hawthorn have earned a week off by Jfraze 6 145 tearing the Swans to shreds in the second 7 145 half of their Friday night encounter. This show Rabbits of force makes the Hawks certain favourites Rocket 5 145 for the Flag! 5 145 The Dockers caused a huge upset by lewyntahlia knocking over powerful Geelong down at 6 144 Kardinia Park. The Cats have lost only 3 Viking Wench of their last 50+ games at their traditional Chris May 7 143 home ground so it was an amazing effort by Fremantle. The Dockers are also in form and well on track for their first Grand-Final AFL LADDER appearance. TEAM W L B P Port Adelaide also played above themselves and their recent form to bump Collingwood out Hawthorn 19 3 1 76 of the finals. The Power have been the success Geelong 18 4 1 72 story of 2013, earning a finals spot with a 16 5 1 66 young playing list, when most predicted them Fremantle to be in the bottom four. Sydney 15 6 1 62 Carlton also showed they do have heart 15 7 1 60 by coming from behind to end Richmond’s Richmond season. The full house at the MCG came Collingwood 14 8 1 56 alive when the Yellow and Black ran out for 12 10 1 48 their eagerly awaited finals appearance. Port Adelaide Leigh Matthews even commented on the Carlton 11 11 1 44 atmosphere being the best he had seen in Essendon 14 8 1 56 any final outside a grand-final, and Leigh has certainly seen a few of those over the years. North Melbourne 10 12 1 40 Carlton hit their straps when it counted in the Adelaide 10 12 1 40 second half to silence the huge Tiger Army at 10 12 1 40 the MCG. This was a real disappointment for Brisbane the Tigers and their long suffering fans who West Coast 9 13 1 36 were hoping to push further into September Gold Coast 8 14 1 32 in this their first finals in 12 years. Week two of finals sees the Hawks and Western Bulldogs 8 14 1 32 Dockers earn a rest to prepare for next week. St Kilda 5 17 1 20 The Sydney Swans host the Blues at ANZ Stadium. The Swans don’t play the bigger Melbourne 2 20 1 8 ground as well as they do at their smaller SCG GWS 1 21 1 4 home and one wonders if this could hamper their chances. Carlton will be playing well above themselves if they can get over the AFL DRAW FINALS W2 top of the Swans. The winner of this match Sept 13 - 14, home team first will meet Fremantle for the right to play in the Grand-final. FRIDAY, September 13 Geelong play Port Adelaide at the MCG. MCG 7.50pm Like Carlton, the Power will likely struggle to match it with the top four sides. It will be Geelong v Port Adelaide some effort and a miracle for Port to win. The wounded Cats will be a very tough prospect indeed. The winner of this will meet the Hawks. Good luck to whoever this may be….! We are certainly nearing the business end SATURDAY, September 14 of the flow-chart that is season 2013. Only six ANZ Stadium 7.45pm teams and five matches left. I’m running out Sydney v Carlton of options now that the in-law’s Tigers have fallen. Go the Rabbitohs! My tips: Sydney and Geelong That’s the wrap! Dallas Page 16 Western Cape Bulletin September 11, 2013
NRL wrap-up with Karl THE final round was full of emotion as some players seasons come to an end, and other teams stamp their way into the finals series. The Round kicked-off on Thursday night with the Broncos finishing what has been a very disappointing season on a high with a win over the Bulldogs. Friday saw the heavyweights of the competition battling it out, with the Roosters becoming Minor Premiers by winning against the Rabbitohs. Saturday saw the Dragons finish their season strong beating the Warriors, the Storm scraped home against the Titans in extra time, and the Cowboys keep their strong run into the finals going beating the Tigers quite convincingly. On Sunday the Panthers pulled the upset of the round with a win against the Sea Eagles, the Knights put the Eels to the sword, and the Sharks won against the Raiders. Looking into week 1 of the Finals there will be one game on Friday, two played on Saturday and another on Sunday. Friday night will see the Rabbitohs playing the Storm. Both teams have been very consistent, but have had a form slump leading into the finals. Look to see the Storms “big 3” stepping up in this game! Saturday’s first game will be between the Sharks and the Cowboys. These two teams are very similar in stature, as they have very strong forward packs and experienced halves to match. Look to see the Cowboys continue their red hot run into the finals, led by the ever reliable Matty Bowen. The second game on Saturday evening is between the Roosters and the Sea Eagles. The Roosters are the Minor Premiers and are very much in the spotlight. The Sea Eagles on the other hand have flown under the radar so to speak and could be the surprise package in the finals series. Sunday’s game is between the Bulldogs and the Knights. This game could go either way as both teams have been good in patches throughout the season but have struggled with consistency. Look for the fullbacks of both teams to step up into the limelight! Karl’s tips: Storm, Cowboys, Roosters and Bulldogs. Yours in footy, Karl

Kowanyama Wallabies secure fourth Cape Cluster title Alf Wilson story
KOWaNYaMa won their fourth successive Cape Cluster rugby league premiership when they defeated Napranum 28-20 in the september 7 grand final held in Coen. It was the climax to a huge day of rugby league and a large crowd turned out. Three qualifying rounds had been held at Weipa, Kowanyama and Lockhart River. Kowanyama coach Dave Kennedy said the decider was a great game of hard rugby league football. “Napranum had a giant side and the way we had to combat that was to run them around and try and tire them. We were very happy to win it for the fourth time,” Kennedy told the Bully on September 10 Kennedy rated his best players as front rower Raphael Lansen, five eighth Stanley David, winger Ishmael Birchley, halfback Elron Lawrence and hooker Maxwell Luke. Referees for the weekend
were Cairns based QRL Northern Division Regional Co-Ordinator David Maiden, Roy Brown and Rod McCrae. Kowanyama defeated Coen in one semi final and Napranum won the other against Lockhart River. McCrae rated utility Leon Wallis and evergreen hooker Jason Nixon amongst Napranum’s best. The other competing Cape Cluster sides were Weipa Raiders and Pormpuraaw who played a game for fifth and sixth position. McCrae said that Pormpuraaw won that easily and added Weipa were short of players and also missing many of their their stars. “There was also several games featuring juniors from Weipa, other parts of Cape York, Pormpuraaw and Lockhart River. “There was some talented lads in those and also two girls played. The Weipa players looked slick,” McCrae said.
that’s right dirt kart fans – the Weipa Dirt Kart club is getting bigger. Twenty nine drivers took to the world-famous raceway on Saturday and what a show. The racing was like the next instalment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise. It was spectacular – with speed, spins, jumps and wall to wall excitement. Three fresh drivers turned out with new karts on Saturday night, Jordan Lindner, Steve Clark and the backbone of the Weipa Dirt Kart Club Tia Batterham all started their racing careers and none of them were slouches. It’s great to see all of these people joining what we reckon is the best Saturday night entertainment in town. The winners for the night were Benn Batterham in the Juniors, Ben west for the KT Mediums, Troy Batterham for KT Heavies, Howard Waretini for the 125s and Ben West in the KT Twins. It was Superb driving by all these people and a big congratulation goes to Green Ant Racing for being the top team on the night. Now it’s on again this Saturday night and this is the last hit-out
Weipa Dirt Kart Club members Dan Metcalfe, Ben West and Justin Hyytinen at the 2012 Northern Territory Titles in Alice Springs.
before our local stars Ben West, Dan Metcalfe and Justin Hyytinen (with his kids in tow) venture to Alice Springs to take on the might of the dirt kart world when they compete in the 2013 Australian Dirt Kart Title. On the first weekend in October, the who’s who of dirt karts are all heading to Alice Springs for what’s being touted as the biggest title ever run and our guys are going to be right there in the middle of it, flying the flag for Weipa and doing what we do best, turning any time into a great time.
So Saturday night, get your backside trackside because you will be starved of any decent entertainment for a month after this weekend. It won’t be until October 12 before our season gets underway again and it will be jam packed with race meetings as we fly into the end of 2013. I hope to see you on Saturday night, we’ve got hot food, the bar is open and the drinks are cold, and best of all it’s free to get in. See you at the track, Mowlesy

WELL, our prayers weren’t answered and the winds continued to get up every day and make life difficult for anglers wishing to fish offshore and in the rivers. The net effect has dropped the water temp from the 28 degrees it was two weeks ago back down to 24.5 degrees this week, and man has this had an effect on the Barra. You can see them with their heads down and not interested, which is a big change from a couple of weeks ago. There are still Grunter and Fingermark in the Hey system and although they are hard to find they are of a good size when you get on to them.

Over in Roberts Creek there have been some nice Blue Salmon and the odd Barra taking bait and lures - young Jack Ross fishing with his dad Peter landed a good Blue Salmon. Grandma’s has similar captures reported as well. Waldron Creek has Golden and small GTs taking lures in the lower reaches and if the water temp comes up there should be some Barra and Jacks taking lures and bait also. I don’t know of anybody targeting the Crabs but there are lots of active holes around so it won’t be long before some good Crabs are taken. I was talking to a southern visitor who has been getting
the odd Barra and Jacks from around the rocks at the Rocky Point boat ramp. This is a popular spot but it certainly gives up a few fish for those who persist, even after a few donuts. The Mission River bridge has been holding Blue and the odd King Salmon at night taking soft plastic and live bait with the occasional Barra as well. In the upper reaches you can expect to catch Fingermark and Jacks on bait. They are starting to pull a few fish from Evans Landing Wharf and again a couple of unstoppable fish, probably Jew. Out on the leads you can find Jew, small Cobia, Queenfish and Trevally, but again you may have to move a few times to find the fish. The local guides have been ducking down the beaches
and have been putting their clients onto Golden Trevally, Queenfish and Fish Philliskirk put one of his customers onto a nice Permit. Up at Mapoon Gary White put his pots in the Wenlock, but only got Jennies and a Barra for his troubles. He braved the windy conditions and went out the front and in the shallow water nailed some good Red Emperor and Tuskies. The Weipa Billfish Club are holding a monthly meeting at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Thursday, September 12 at 7pm. The winds are predicted to drop so I’m hoping to get offshore on the weekend and if the winds ease and a few boats get out I should get some more reports and photos. ‘Til next week, smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. – Cheers, China
