Hunters haul in feral pigs

Dan Terry from Team Up ya Crackle with a big boar that that he and his dogs got on Saturday morning in the 2013 Weipa Pig Hunt.

ORGANISERS of the annual Weipa Pig Hunt have declared the 2013 event a huge success, with 190 feral pig kills registered by 96 hunters in 36 teams. There were positive reports fed back from local Police, who were out and about throughout the weekend, and all hunters returned home safely, if not a little exhausted and thirsty. “It’s such a relief to have an incident-free event,” Weipa Pig Hunt president Redman said. “We do everything possible to ensure everyone get’s home safely. I get that attitude from the company I work for.” Sponsorship and prizes were bigger and better at the year’s event and the top hunter’s prize – a Honda TRX 250 quad bike – was won by Ben Harris. Weipa Pig Hunt committee member Steve Head said the quad couldn’t have gone to a more deserving hunter. “Ben hails from the South-East Queensland area and his family were heavily affected by the floods that impacted the area earlier this year. “Working and living here in Weipa at the time Ben felt helpless as he worried about his family and their farm. “That quad is going straight to the farm and will be a great help getting the family back on their feet,” Steve said. Following Saturday afternoon’s weigh-in around 500 people enjoyed live entertainment by Cairns band “Ice Breakers” while feasting

on the Carpentaria Golf Club’s fine fare with a couple of well-deserved cold beverages. MC for the weekend, Derek Mowles said the “outdoor” set-up for the event was a real winner. “The stage was set-up in a spot that utilised the lawns of the Golf Club much better than in previous years and it was great to see so many families enjoying themselves,” he said. The annual Weipa Pig Hunt highlights the damage caused to native flora and fauna by feral pigs and proceeds from the weekend are returned to the community. “We would like to thank all the participants, spectators, volunteers and sponsors for making the event the best we’ve ever had,” Weipa Pig Hunt committee member Dan Terry said. “Any profits from the event will be going to local community clubs or organisations and this will be sorted in the next few weeks.”

WEIPA Town Authority chairperson Peter McCulkin believes the Queensland Government is “on the right track” with the draft Cape York Regional Plan. “This is a mapping exercise which will give a clear view of those areas of Cape York open for development and those that are not,” Mr McCulkin said. “The plan will give us a clear direction for the future of Cape York.” However, conservationsists have branded the Cape York Statutory Regional Plan a blueprint for the Queensland Government dream to industrialise the region. Wilderness Society Northern Australia Campaigner Gavan McFadzean warned that the plan scraps Wild River protections and places under threat areas that earlier this year were assessed as World Heritage standard. “The Cape York Statutory Regional Plan is nothing but a blueprint for destroying World Heritage landscapes with mining and insane agricultural schemes,” Mr McFadzean said. “This Queensland Government wants to open up the most sensitive waterways and landscapes to mining, dams and land clearing on an unprecedented scale.” The comments follow a

meeting of the Cape York Regional Planning Committee in Cairns on Wednesday, September 18, to review a draft version of the Cape York Regional Plan, prior to its release for public consultation. Deputy Premier and the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the third committee meeting brought together the Cape York Mayors, key industry and community stakeholders and fellow State Ministers. “The Queensland Government is setting a course to open the region to economic diversity and opportunities, while balancing the protection of the Cape’s unique environment.” Mr McCulkin also labelled the reaction from conservationists to the draft plan as “a very apparent case of scaremongering”. “The plan was presented to the Cape York Regional Planning Committee as an internal document in preliminary draft form, seeking feedback from the Committee as part of the statutory process. “For conservationists to publicly criticise the internal draft plan at this preliminary stage is most disappointing, and you have to seriously question their motives,” Mr McCulkin said. Mr McFadzen said:“Under

The draft Cape York Regional Plan should be available for public consultation by November this year, and finalised by mid-2014.

this plan only 16 per cent of Cape York’s World Heritage quality landscapes will be preserved, ignoring the huge employment and economic opportunities that come with World Heritage protection,” Mr McFadzean said. “Queensland has some of the precious few pristine wild rivers left in the world, and it is our responsibility to treasure and protect them. “The Wenlock is one of four rivers to have its Wild River status removed. The Wenlock River has more freshwater fish species than any other river in Australia and is the lifeblood for the tall eucalypt woodlands, the

western Cape’s few remaining pockets of tropical rainforests and the Steve Irwin Nature Reserve, which John Howard set up in memory to a great Australian conservationist. “All large-scale northern Australian irrigation projects have been expensive failures, with $1.3 billion wasted on the Ord. Cape York is now following the same flawed development model,” Mr McFadzean said. Public consultation on the draft plan is likely to start by early November this year and close early in 2014. The final plan is expected to be released by mid-2014.

CAIRNS Water Police are urging recreational boaties to ensure their safety equipment complies with current legislative requirements following recent search and rescues. A man recently called 000 stating that his vessel had broken down at Batt Reef off Port Douglas and he required assistance. Officer in Charge of Cairns Water Police, Senior Constable Chris Uprichard said the man had used three hand held flares to try and alert other vessels in the vicinity but it did not work. “Radio calls by Cairns VTS for vessels in the Batt Reef area to report the location of the flares went unanswered,” Senior Constable Uprichard said.

“Thankfully the man set off an EPIRB which resulted in him being located by the Port Douglas Coast Guard, who rendered mechanical assistance for approximately 20 minutes for an electrical problem, and the vessel was then able to proceed back to shore under its own power. “A rescue helicopter was also deployed to respond to the beacon activation. “Unfortunately the beacon used was not registered with them as it should have been.” Cairns Water Police officers are concerned that on two consecutive weekends, radio calls of a distress situation went unanswered. appears to have been ignored or gone unreported by other vessels in the near vicinity. Senior Constable Uprichard said boaties must be mindful of their obligations to assist a vessel displaying or communicating signals of distress. “In the case they are not able to respond, their obligation to report such to Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue or local vessel monitoring stations. “In both these instances the matters would have been resolved in a more timely matter, with the assistance of nearby vessels, reducing the risks to persons involved. “Please remember that safety on the water is everyone’s responsibility.”

Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs David Kempton with Ngan Aak-Kunch directors Stanley Ahlers, Jonathan Korkaktain, Janine Chevathun, Maryann Kerindun, Sharon Ngallametta and Bruce Martin at the historic Aurukun land transfer last Wednesday.

THE Aurukun community saw a long awaited land transfer come to fruition on Wednesday, September 18, 2013. The transfer was the largest single Aboriginal freehold deed issued since the Aboriginal Land Act 1991 was enacted and formally recognised Aboriginal ownership of more than 736,000 hectares of land at Aurukun. Around 250 people, includ-

ing visitors, local residents and dignitaries attended the land handover which was held in the community’s Town Square. Aurukun Shire Council chief executive officer Bernie McCarthy said the highlight of the day was the performance by the local school band. “The band was certainly well received and were warmly applauded by everyone,” Mr McCarthy said. “It is a great

sign for Aurukun’s future to see its youth perform so professionally and confidently.” Following the transfer, the Shire Lease will be cancelled and the land will become Aboriginal Freehold land with two trustees. Aurukun Shire Council will be the trustee of the town area and the reserve land and Ngan Aak-Kunch Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC will be trustee of the balance of the

Shire Lease, with the exception of the Peppan lot and the four State land lots. Both Trustees will be responsible for managing the land that they hold and making decisions about that land on behalf of the people they hold the land for. “Aurukun can now move forward with great hope for a bright future,” Mr McCarthy said.

Weipa mining lease application achieves environmental milestone METALLICA Minerals has announced that an Environmental Authority (EA) has been issued by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection for the Company’s Mining Lease Application (MLA) over the Urquhart Point Zircon-Rutile HMS Project, located 3km

southwest of Weipa. Metallica managing director, Andrew Gillies said the issuing of the EA is a significant permitting milestone. “This paves the way for the MLA to be submitted to the Queensland Minister for Natural Resources and Mines for consideration to grant the Mining Lease.” “The MLA is held

Oresome is in the process of obtaining quotes from suppliers for plant and equipment required to establish a full scale, commercial mineral sands operation, with a sand processing throughput target of 300 tonnes per hour producing approximately 20,000 tonnes per annum of approximately 50 per cent zircon and 40 per cent rutile sand concentrate. Meanwhile, Metallica is actively exploring appropriate funding and offtake options to enable planned development of the project. T h e We i p a H M S

project has the potential to make Oresome Australia a significant producer of high quality zircon and rutile product. Oresome also plans to continue evaluating its extensive regional exploration tenements along the 300km coastline between Weipa and the tip of the Cape York Peninsula. Initial evaluations will occur on 22 untested radiometric targets already identified within strandlines, sand dunes and inland sand formations. These features are not known to have been previously investigated for HMS accumulations. Urquhart Point EPM and MLA is a very small part of extensive exploration permits and applications covering approximately 2,000sq km of ground prospective for mineral sands on Cape York which so far includes the 22 radiometric targets that has the potential to yield significant additional HM accumulations.

How do I tell if I have digital TV? If you can see ABC2, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO or Eleven, you are digital ready and don’t need to do anything.

If I can’t see those channels, what do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner; or • a satellite TV system. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your satellite dish or antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

THERE’S a distinct sense of ‘sour grapes’ from Jan McLucas (North Queensland ‘dudded’ by the new Abbott Government, Western Cape Bulletin, September 18). I’m absolutely confident that the Abbott Government will understand FNQ’s needs and challenges and in fact, I think it’ll be a vast improvement after Jan’s noticeable lack of advocacy and local achievements during her time as Queensland Senator. Jan has conveniently ignored the fact that as the Chair of the Committee

Weipa parents urged to have children immunised

Notice of an application for determination of native title in the state of Queensland Notification day: 9 October 2013 This is an application by a native title claim group who are asking the Federal Court to determine that the group hold native title in the area described below. A person who wants to become a party to this application must write to the Registrar of the Federal Court, PO Box 13084, Brisbane, QLD, 4003 on or before 8 January 2014. After 8 January 2014, the Federal Court’s permission to become a party is required.

WEIPA Integrated Health Service Medical Superintendent Dr Alex Dunn is urging Weipa residents to have their children immunised as immunisation rates in the region had seen a recent drop. Dr Dunn said most areas of Queensland had more than 90 per cent of children fully vaccinated. “And where measles, mumps and rubella are concerned, the Cape York area in general actually has one of the highest percentages of vaccinated children in Queensland at an average of about 95 per cent,’’ he said. “So it’s very unfortunate that for the Weipa area specifically, we have started to see a drop-off in vaccination rates.’’ Dr Dunn said achieving high immunisation rates not only protected an individual but also those too young to be immunised. People who were unable to be vaccinated also benefited as high population vaccination rates stopped infectious organisms being transmitted in the community, he said. If most people are immunised, then Queensland’s population as a whole protects the most vulnerable: • Children too young to be immunised. • Children who cannot be immunised for medical reasons. • People who are immuno-suppressed. • People whose immune system does not adequately respond to vaccination. “Immunisation is considered one of the most important achievements of modern medicine, saving millions of lives,’’ Dr Dunn said. “Vaccines are very effective but need to be given when they are due to

offer the best protection. “They remain extremely important and highly effective at preventing serious and life threatening infectious disease,” Dr Dunn said. “Diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, measles, Haemophilus influenzae type b, meningococcal C and poliomyelitis occur rarely in Queensland now and this is because of the usually high rates of immunisation amongst the community. ‘‘Immunisation is all about ensuring the health of our community.

Under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cwlth) there can be only one determination of native title for a particular area. If a person with native title rights and interests does not become a party to this application, there may be no other opportunity for the Federal Court, in making its determination, to take into account those native title rights and interests in relation to the area concerned. Application name: Kowanyama People #2 Federal Court File No: QUD282/2012 Date fi led: 14 June 2012 Registration test status: The Native Title Registrar has not accepted this application for registration. Although this application has not been registered, the Federal Court may still refer the application for mediation and/or make a determination in relation to it. Description: The application covers about 385 square kilometres and is located approximately 30 kilometres east of Kowanyama as shown on the locality map. The application falls within the Local Government Authority of the Carpentaria Shire Council.

Data statement: claimant application boundary compiled by the National Native Title Tribunal based on data sourced from and used with permission of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. Facilitating timely and effective outcomes.

WEIPA Integrated Health Service Medical Superintendent Dr Alex Dunn.

“Working together to continue to improve vaccination coverage rates is the key to a reduction in the spread of diseases.’’ Dr Dunn said children who were not up to date with vaccinations may be at risk from serious diseases such as tetanus, whopping cough, polio, hepatitis B, measles, mumps and rubella. For more information, talk to your child health nurse or GP. You can also get more information by calling 13 HEALTH or visit www.health.qld.gov. au/immunisation

Deadline approaches for ANZAC grants ORGANISATIONS in Leichhardt that plan to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC are urged to submit their applications before the October 31 round one deadline. In April this year Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch launched the ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program, which provides $100,000 in funding for local projects. The Leichhardt ACLG Committee has decided to assess applications in two rounds – with up to $50,000 available for projects submitted before October 31, and a further $50,000 for projects submitted before February 28, 2014. “The Centenary of ANZAC (2014 – 2018) stands to be one of the most important commemorative periods in our history,” explained Mr Entsch. “I know there are a number of

community groups and organisations who would like to get their projects underway as soon as possible, which is why we’ve divided the funding into two rounds rather than waiting until all the applications are submitted by February 2014.” There is a broad scope for the projects, which can include public commemorative events, new First World War memorials or honour boards, the restoration of existing First World War memorials or honour boards, the preservation and display of First World War memorabilia and relevant school projects. Aurukun residents are invited to attend a healthy eating cooking demonstration at the Island & Cape supermarket this Thursday, September 26. The demonstration, held in partnership with Apunipima Cape York Health Council’s nutrition team, will feature two “Yum Yum” pizza recipes specifically designed for Cape York residents. They include a spinach and feta pizza, and a fruit and vegetable pizza, cooked in an oven or electric frying pan, and using fresh and healthy ingredients, including a wholemeal, multigrain or high-fibre wrap as the pizza base. Island & Cape retail operations manager Craig Oxlade said the event will be a fun occasion for the whole Aurukun community. “Island & Cape is very excited to bring healthy cooking demonstrations into our supermarkets to support better health throughout the community,” Mr Oxlade said. “These cooking demonstrations are part of our Healthy Choices program which ensures that healthy food choices are

Mr Oxlade said the Aurukun community also had a great time at the recent launch of the healthy badging project, again run in conjunction with Apunipima Cape York Health Council. “Everyone participates really well in these events, bringing together a number of organisations that work in Aurukun, and sharing resources for happier and healthier outcomes for local residents,” he said. The demonstrations will be starting around 10.00am and running all day.

I’d like to say a huge thank you, and I know this is just the start of an exciting, ongoing relationship. “It’s extremely cost-effective for private and government organisations to be able to work together to achieve a common goal – namely, improving the health of Indigenous people in Far North Queensland. “I’d also like to thank all our fresh food suppliers, who really got on board with this program and assisted with food donations as part of our giveaways.”

WEIPA Woolworths Supermarket social club recently made a $3000 donation to the royal Flying Doctor Service. Pictured at the cheque presentation are Andrew McDonald (RFDS clinical counsellor) receiving the donation from Weipa Woolworths manager Jenny Everist, accompanied by members of the Woolies social club. Archaeologist and field manager, Dr Justin Shiner explains to the Western Cape College Year 10 students how the research team excavate and collect shell mound samples.

HIGH school students from Weipa’s Western Cape College have been given a first-hand look at a ground-breaking archaeological research project under way on the land of the Wathayn Traditional Owners. During the visit, the year ten high school students learned how university researchers are examining shell mounds to find out how local Aboriginal people have adapted to changing environments over the past several thousand years. Rio Tinto archaeologist and research field manager Dr Justin Shiner said he was delighted to give students the chance to learn more about local cultural heritage sites. “This archaeological project is a fantastic opportunity to explain to the students how our coastline has changed over time and to show them some of the shell mounds that are up to 4000 years old,” Dr Shiner said. Western Cape College teacher Rose Goodall said the excursion allowed the students to see firsthand the Western Cape’s rich history and was beneficial for all. “The students really enjoyed the tour and were amazed to hear

about, and see, these sites of cultural significance right in our back yard,” Ms Goodall said. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa is the industry partner in a three year Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant involving researchers from six universities – Macquarie University, Australian National University, The University of Auckland, Waikato University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of York. The project also looks at how the environment has changed over the past 6000 to 7000 years since the development of the estuaries around Weipa. “The project gives us a much

deeper understanding of the relationships between the physical and biological environment, and the people who lived here in the past, and constructed the mounds,” Dr Shiner said. This is the third year of the ARC Linkage Grant, which has seen researchers scan, photograph, log and sample more than 60 shell mounds. Other tests performed indicate the environment around Wathayn has markedly changed over the past few thousand years. Samples will now be tested at the partnership’s universities to estimate the age of the shells, and further fieldwork for follow-up is planned.

A NON-DeNOMINATIONAL memorial service will be held at 10am this Friday at St Luke’s Church, Weipa to honour Police Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Part of National Police Remembrance Day commemorations Weipa Police Inspector Paul James invited members of the community to attend the service. “National Police Remembrance Day is not just a time for members of the Service and community to say thank you to the dedicated men and women who have died while on duty, but also

an opportunity to recognise the service the Police provide to the community,” he said. Frontier Services’ Reverend Ron Watson said the service was not a religious ceremony, but rather a remembrance. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the local community to thank our local Police Officers for the remarkable effort they put into their jobs,” Rev. Watson said. The service commences at 10am on Friday, September 27 and will be followed by morning tea.

The four gospels agree on the resurrection of the Lord but report different views of what happened around the time of his resurrection. We will start with Mark’s report in Ch 16 to the end of that chapter and then look at Matthew, Luke and John. According to Mark’s report, on the morning of the resurrection before the sun rose, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices to anoint the body of Jesus. They were worried about the big stone that sealed the entrance to the cave where Jesus was

By Rev. Michael Connolly

buried, and how they could ever get a group of strong men to roll the stone away. But to their surprise, the stone had already been rolled away by an angel, who they mistook for a young man. He told them that the Lord had risen and had already gone walkabout towards Galilee, and they could find him there, and to go and tell his disciples including Peter. Isn’t it wonderful that when Peter, a leader, was still feeling low from denying the Lord, (14 v 29-31) the Lord made it a point of making him feel accepted and loved

by particularly mentioning him? Notice what the angel said to them in Ch 16 v 7 about the risen Lord? “He is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him, just as he told you.” Jesus told them that would happen before his death, which shows that God the Father is always in control, and Jesus knew it. (14 v 28). When things seem out of control in our lives, isn’t it comforting to remind us that God is always in control! More next week as we continue with Mark’s report. God is all-knowing.

Rev Michael Connolly.

HeAlTHY Shark populations may aid the recovery of coral reefs whose futures are threatened throughout the globe, according to a new study from the Australian institute of marine Science (AimS). The link has been found by longterm monitoring of reefs off Australia’s northwest coast, and showed that where Shark numbers were lower due to fishing, herbivores – important fishes in promoting reef health – were also significantly lower in number. “At first glance the result might seem strange”, says Dr Mark Meekan, Principal Researcher at AIMS and co-author of the publication that appears today in the scientific journal, PLOS ONE. “However, our analysis suggests that where Shark numbers are reduced we see a fundamental change in the structure of food chains on reefs. “We see increasing numbers of midlevel predators – such as Snappers – and a reduction in the numbers of herbivores – such as Parrotfishes. The Parrotfishes are very important because they eat the algae that would otherwise overwhelm young corals on reefs recovering from natural disturbances,” he adds. The study comes at an opportune time in the life of coral reefs, which are facing a number of pressures both from direct human-activity, such as over-fishing, and from climate change, as explained by lead author, Dr Jonathan Ruppert, of the University of Toronto. According to Dr Ruppert: “The reefs we studied are about 300 kilometres off the coast of northwest Australia and the only human impacts are Indonesian fishers who primarily target Sharks, a practice stretching back several centuries, which continues under an Australian-Indonesian memorandum of understanding. “These reefs provided us with a unique opportunity to isolate the impact of overfishing of Sharks on reef resilience, and

September 25, 2013

assess that impact in the broader context of climate change pressures threatening coral reefs.” Dr Meekan adds: “On reefs where Sharks are fished we found much lower numbers of herbivorous – algae eating – fishes, providing evidence that overfishing Sharks can have detrimental knock-on effects at least for some species further down the food chain. “With many of the changes from a warming climate already locked in, there may be little we can do to prevent increased frequency of disturbances on coral reefs in the near future.” “However, this is not case with the loss of reef Sharks,” he says. “Tracking studies show that in many cases individual reef Sharks are closely attached to certain coral reefs, so even relatively small marine protected areas could be an effective way to protect the top-level predators, which may ultimately mean that coral reefs are better able to recover from coral bleaching or large cyclones. “This makes the declines that are occurring in reef Sharks due to overfishing throughout the world of great concern, because our study shows that a healthy reef means healthy populations of Sharks,” Meekan concludes.

the organisation’s commitment to improving the lives of people in Cape York. “We have a proud record of training, supporting and employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers. We believe this is unparalleled way of addressing the social determinants that contribute to the health gap.”

Aurukun bauxite proposals submitted TWO groups have submitted proposals to develop the Aurukun bauxite deposit in western Cape York. Australian Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd (AIR) and Glencore International AG each submitted proposals by the September 13, 2013 deadline. The State Government will now evaluate the proposals based on their environmental merits as well as how they maximised benefits and returns to the native title holders, the Aurukun community and the state. Acting Premier Jeff Seeney said: “We have called for expressions of interest, selected a shortlist of proponents capable of delivering the development and invited these proponents to submit their detailed plans. “Importantly, shortlisted proponents have been able to put forward proposals that they consider best meet the state objectives and their commercial interests.” Each of the shortlisted groups had the opportunity to meet with the Ngan AakKunch Aboriginal Corporation (NAK), which represents the native title holders for the resource area – the Wik and Wik Way people, and the Aurukun Shire Council to discuss and refine their proposals. “The Queensland Government will now assess each proposal keeping in mind the project must be delivered at no cost or risk to the State and must meet strict environmental conditions,” Mr Seeney said. Two of the shortlisted groups – Chalco and Rio Tinto Aluminium had decided to withdraw from the competitive bid process. He said Cape Alumina did not withdraw from the competitive bid process, but had not lodged a proposal by the September 13, 2013 deadline. “The government will now work towards a final decision on a preferred proponent by the end of the year,” he said.

In the latter part of the 19th century the small ship HMS Salamander played a littleknown but prominent role in the early settlement of the Cape York region. This 818 ton paddlewheel sloop, under the command of Captain J. Carnegie, first arrived with supplies and equipment at the new settlement of Somerset in July 1864, not long after this isolated but strategically important outpost had been established. HMS Salamander provided a vital and on-going link for Somerset, bringing in supplies by sea, on average three times a year. As well, in February 1867, HMS Salamander was to bring the Reverend F.C. Jagg and Mr W.I. Kennett to the new settlement. Jagg, a missionary priest and Ken-

nett, a school teacher, were both representatives of the England based Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts and were charged with establishing a mission at Somerset. However, despite making a concerted effort, these early missionaries were unable to overcome the challenges they faced, including a general lack of financial and logistical support as well as experiencing continuous conflict with the local Indigenous peoples. John Jardine, the recently appointed government resident at Somerset, also used the HMS Salamander to bring in his own equipment, labour and supplies, particularly once he had gained permission to establish a cattle station at the tip of Cape York, later bringing in his two sons,

AFL wrap-up with Dallas BRING on the grand final! The Hawks take on the Dockers for the 2013 flag - the two strongest sides leading into the finals have continued their good form to make it to the big one. Hawthorn return for their third grand final in six years, while Fremantle have made it to their first in a relatively short club history. The Hawks have finally ended the dreaded “Kennet Curse” by downing Geelong in spectacular and nail-biting fashion in the last few minutes of the preliminary final. After a run of 11 wins over the Hawks since the 2008 grand final, the Cats led most of the game and by three goals mid-way through the last quarter. However, Hawthorn ran them down and snatched it back to knock them out of the race. Hawthorn 14-18-102 d Geelong 15-7-97 Fremantle completely dominated and overpowered the Swans in their preliminary final. Sydney kicked several goals late in the game to make the score respectable but they were never in the hunt. Fremantle are looking stronger than ever and they have certainly peaked at the right time. Fremantle 14-15 99 d Sydney 11-8-74. Hawthorn, who lost last year’s grand final to underdogs Sydney, will be primed to not let this opportunity slip again in 2013. However the Fremantle Dockers are probably more powerful than the Swans were last year so the Hawks will have to be at the top of their game to take it out on Saturday. The Hawks are still patchy at times in games but have the ability to come home strong. Freo are frustrating with a bustling, crowding and suffocating defensive style in their half. Their coach is the master of flooding defence. Can they keep it up for one more week? The Hawks midfield will try to bust loose forward to the likes of Buddy and Roughy. Will they be too inconsistent and choke again? Hawthorn will be favourites but it could really be anyone’s game and it should be a beauty! Congratulations to Gary Ablett Jnr. for winning his second Brownlow. It certainly was a tense ending to the night. The AFL couldn’t have scripted it better, with Ablett overtaking Geelong’s Joel Selwood in the last round to take the medal. A champion effort! On a lesser note, congratulations to Craig Hughey on winning both footy tipping comps. Seeing as I got frustrated by forgetting to submit mine on time for a few weeks and subsequently gave up in typical whinging, sooky fashion, I’m glad Craig made use of both Karl’s and my tips each week. Knowing Hughey through work, I can assure you he is on top of the world with his tipping wins and with both his Hawks and Sea-Eagles right in the mix at the end of the year. Some have all the luck! Hopefully Craig’s good fortune will end this weekend in the league as the Rabbitohs smash Manly. Go the Bunnies! That’s the Wrap! Dallas

NRL wrap-up with Karl

TOP 10 TIPPERS

THE Semi Finals games produced controversy and an upset to progress through to the Preliminary Finals. The Semi Finals kicked off on Friday night with the Sea Eagles playing the Sharks. The Sea Eagles ended up winning the match with some controversial calls by the referee’s being questioned after the game. Then on Saturday the Knights pulled an upset with a win over the Storm. Recent performances from the Knights see them as a real threat as they topple a giant contender of the Premiership. Looking into the Preliminary Finals there will be two matches played over the weekend. On Friday the Rabbitohs come back from a week off to play the Sea Eagles. This will be a highly anticipated match-up as in previous games there have been some fireworks between the teams. Keep an eye on the Burgess Brothers as they batter the Sea Eagles up the middle to try and lay a platform for Reynolds to weave his magic. From the Manly side expect a huge game from Jamie Lyon as he looks to steer his side to victory. Then on Saturday the Roosters also return from a week’s rest against the Knights. Last time these two played each other, the game was in limbo for quite some time until field position went the way of the Roosters and they capitalised and never looked back. Look to see the Roosters James Maloney try and control the game early with his kicking game off the back of good go forward from his monster pack. From the Knights watch Willie Mason niggle the Roosters forwards to get them off their game, as well as the young halves combination of Mullen and Roberts stamp their mark on the game. The winners of these two games will progress into the Grand Final. Karl’s tips: Rabbitohs and Roosters. Yours in footy, Karl

When the dirt kart bug bites . . .

MAIN PHOTO: One of the Weipa Dirt Kart team’s purpose-built trailers which will carry the local boy’s karts 3000km oneway to compete in some of the biggest dirt kart races in the country. INSET: Weipa Dirt Kart’s Daniel Metcalfe.

Well, they’re at it again. last year gave a few of the Weipa Dirt Kart stars just a taste of what it was like to compete against the nation’s best drivers. It’s been 12 months since Ben West, Danny Metcalfe and Justin Hyytinen embarked on a trip that would change their lives forever when they travelled to Alice Springs for the 2012 Northern Territory Dirt Kart Title. The trip was challenging at times but left them all with a desire to chase the golden goose again, but this time it’s different. Since the inaugural running of the Queensland Dirt Kart Title, these three have a belief that they won’t be just making up the numbers this time but having a red hot go, and pushing the best in the country all the way to the chequered flag. These three drivers, along

with Michael Brooker who has been travelling the dirt kart circuit in South Australia, are all primed for a real Queensland onslaught at the 2013 Northern Territory State Title and also the countries Blue Ribbon Dirt Kart event, the 2013 Australian Dirt Kart Title. This year, Weipa is also sending three junior drivers to take on the best of the best - current Queensland champion Rachel Brooker and Queensland No. 2 Tristan Hyytinen, along with Jasmine Hyytinen will be chasing glory on the biggest stage that Dirt Karting Australia has to offer. The logistics are enormous here, the lengths that these people are going to compete has been no simple task. Purpose-built trailers have been constructed to haul these pocket rockets some 3000kms one way to compete over two weekends

beginning with the NT title on September 28 and 29 and culminating with the Australian Title being held over October 4, 5 and 6. This is what dirt karting offers the serious competitor, an opportunity to travel and compete on the biggest stage and gauge just how good we are up here. And good results will only encourage more top travel to Weipa next year when we run the Queensland Title again. So if you want to keep up to date with how they are all travelling at the race meetings, connect to the Weipa Dirt Kart Facebook page as the racers will upload on-the-spot information and pictures about their exploits Join with me in wishing them all the best, drive safely, race hard and kick some butt boys and girls. We know you will make us all proud. – Mowlesy

Quiz answers

On the closer reefs like Westminster we found some good Tuskers and Cod taking a liking to our Squid and Prawn bait, but there were a lot of small fish interspersed between the bigger ones. The charter operators like Fish Philliskirk had their clients jigging or high-speed vertical spinning which proved to be a most effective way of getting the Mackerel. Spanyid or

bumper bar lures work very well in this type of fishing. In the rivers fishing has been consistent with the warmer water but the Bream are a bit of a pest taking live bait meant for bigger fish. There was an unusual capture of a Coral Trout under the Mission River bridge but the Barra have been slow. Evans Landing Wharf had a bit of a run of Grunter during the week with the evening tides

THE days are getting hotter and so is the fishing, both in the rivers and out in the deep blue sea. The blue water has moved in close and the bait has come with it, so with bait come the predators Mackerel, Tuna and Queenfish. The Tuna were smashing bait in four metres of water inside Westminster Reef and there were some big fish amongst them.

Page 24 Western Cape Bulletin September 25, 2013

Further south out wide of Pera Head the Mackerel are taking trolled Laser Pro 190 in shallow and deep runners with blues and gold doing the damage this week. A tip is to troll your deep divers up short and the shallow runners further back and you shouldn’t tangle up when you make your turns. The Mackerel are either big females or smaller males so

keep enough for a feed and let a few go. Big Bull Sharks are taking a few of the hooked fish, and in turn a lost lure, so it was an expensive Sunday for me losing one skirted lure and one Laser Pro 190. The Shark that took the skirted lure peeled off 200 yards of line and then launched itself like a Sea World Orca and I was glad it was a long way out because if it had landed in the boat the amount of damage would be catastrophic! I was fishing with Jacob Childs who is new in town and after hooking his second Shark

his arms were a foot longer as this beast headed north, and kept on going, ‘til he was spooled and not an inch of 50 pound braid left. We fished the bottom for a mixed bag consisting of Nannygai, small Spangled Emperor, Stripies and red oogly things that take your bait and then hide under rocks. It is still the case of keep on moving until you find the better class of fish, another trick is to use tough baits like fish wings. The pickers tap away but the good fish just inhale them.  continued page 23
