Social media sparks crocodile debate

A POST by a concerned citizen on a popular Weipa social media sight last Friday has launched an online debate regarding the presence of crocodiles in the area. The post, which warned people about a crocodile lurking around the Rocky Point boat ramp, had prompted almost 120 comments at time of press on Tuesday afternoon, with

opinions ranging from a call to cull the animals, to more care needed by residents and visitors. Results of a recent survey conducted by Australia Zoo on living with crocodiles in Weipa, published in the Western Cape Bulletin, September 18, 2013 revealed that most residents “considered there were too many crocodiles and a degree of culling should be undertaken in the area.”

Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said he believes that to ﬁnd the perfect balance between human and crocodile habitation in Weipa the emotion must be removed from the debate and common sense must prevail. “To protect crocodiles at all costs when they are in areas people frequent is just not feasible,” Mr Entsch said.  continued page 2

Common sense the key in croc debate  from page 1 “You cannot condemn crocs for behaving the way they do – they have not changed since the dinosaurs. Nor can you legislate for human stupidity, so there has to be a balanced approach.” Mr Entsch said he was not in favour of “wholesale slaughter” of the animals or removal of large numbers as this would create a perception of safety in the area. “Weipa has an increasing number of visitors arriving every year and these people need to be informed that crocodiles inhabit the area,” he said. “Don’t hide it, put big signs up at the airport and on the approach roads to the town. Local businesses hiring staff from outside the town need to inform them of the precautions they need to take around local waterways. “Crocodiles viewed in the wild, at a safe distance are an asset to Weipa’s tourist industry, however any animal that is a threat to human safety at places such as boat ramps must be removed.” Mr Entsch said that while educating people on how to be “croc wise” was paramount people needed to take

Police recruit hits the streets A TOWNSVILLE Police Academy recruit is learning the ropes of remote Police work this week with the Weipa Police. The 29-year old recruit, Chloe Marshall, chose Weipa for her week’s station duty as she preferred the lifestyle of the mining town to busy cities. “My partner lives in Weipa so I have visited here before and loved it,” Recruit Marshall said. “It’s a better lifestyle to the city and the fishing’s great!” Acting Inspector Brett Jenkins said Weipa Police jumped at the chance to host the recruit when it was offered to them. “I am so pleased the Inspector In Charge of the Townsville Police Academy has ‘opened the opportunity door’ with this initiative,” Acting Inspector Jenkins said. “This opportunity enables us to market the Cape as a real option for junior officers wanting the challenges of remote policing once they exit the first year training phases.” Acting Inspector Jenkins said that as a Weipa local he would encourage anyone who

said he had no doubt Recruit Marshall would gain positively from her experiences in Weipa and would take those positives back to the Townsville Academy to share with her peers. “All of Weipa Police Staff wish Recruit Marshall all the best with her studies and no doubt look forward to again working with her in the future,” he said.

Officers honoured at Weipa service AROUND 50 community members and 10 representatives of the Queensland Police Service attended the Weipa Police Remembrance Day service held at St Lukes Church last Friday. While September 29 is the official day for Police Remembrance Day, and coincides with Saint Michael the Archangel feast day (patron Saint of the Police), to allow for a greater local attendance, the local Weipa Police Remembrance Day was held on Friday. Acting Inspector Brett Jenkins said it was the first time in many years local Police had moved the ceremony from the Police Station to a church. “Weipa Police were very grateful and proud to see so much local support. “I must sincerely thank Reverend Ron Watson our local Police Chaplin for running such a great service and making his church available for us all. “I would also like to thank the women from Saint Lukes who assisted with the morning,” Acting Inspector Jenkins said.

THE much-anticipated Woolworths Maxi Bakery opened for business last Thursday, September 26 and has so far proved extremely popular with customers. An official opening ceremony was held at 8am with Weipa Town Authority chairman Peter McCulkin completing the ribbon-cutting duties. Mr McCulkin was accompanied at the ceremony by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager-operations Gareth Manderson, local and State Woolworths staff and a cheery choc-chip cookie character. Weipa Woolworths manager Jenny Everist said the Maxi Bakery, which stocks everything from muffins to cob loaves, added another dimension to the store. “It’s been really well received by our customers in the first week,” Ms Everist said. “On our first day of operation we recorded the highest opening day Maxi Bakery sales in Queensland which is a terrific start.”

RTA calendar focuses on community FOR the past decade keen local photographers have been contributing to the annual Rio Tinto Alcan calendar, and this year’s entries have again been considerable. The calendar was initiated in 2003 by the communications committee (consisting of representatives from a variety of departments across the site) who wanted to create an innovative piece of communication to help improve awareness about health, safety and environment among not only the workforce but also the broader community. The themes and branding have changed over the 10 years, along with members of the communications committee, but each year the overwhelming number of photo submissions has remained consistent. The theme for the 2014 RTA calendar was “Community events on the Cape” and with a Weipa to Cairns return flight up for grabs in two categories – community favourite and overall best photo – there was again an enormous response. Photographs have been selected for the calendar and Kelly Rogers has taken out the overall

to visit Weipa next week The Fair Work Ombudsman will visit Weipa over two days next week to help employers and workers learn more about their workplace rights and responsibilities. Fair Work Inspectors will visit a random selection of independently-owned businesses in Weipa’s retail, hospitality, tourism and mining industries on Wednesday, October 9, to discuss steps they can take to ensure they are complying with workplace laws. They will provide information about minimum pay rates, conditions and hand out fact sheets and templates designed to help employers meet their pay and record-keeping obligations. In addition, Fair Work Inspectors will be available to answer questions from employers and employees about pay, conditions and other aspects of workplace laws on Thursday, October 10, between 9am and 12pm at Weipa Centrelink, on Kerr Point Road. Employees and employers

can drop in during these hours without making an appointment. Information on a range of topics including wages, flexible work arrangements, leave entitlements, workplace discrimination, hours of work and other entitlements will be available. Fair Work Inspector, Natalie Barney, said the visit aimed to raise awareness among Weipa employers and employees of national workplace laws. “A big part of the Fair Work Ombudsman’s role is to help build knowledge in the community about workplace laws and to help create fairer workplaces,” Ms Barney said. “Opportunities like this where we can speak directly to employers and employees are an important way to help achieve that and improve community understanding. “We encourage anyone in the Weipa region, including in the Indigenous communities of Mapoon and Napranum, with a

Rape charge, Aurukun Police have charged an 18-year-old Aurukun man following an investigation into the alleged rape of a woman at a residence in the community last Saturday. The man was charged with one count of rape and is due to appear in the Aurukun Magistrates court on october 14.

Aurukun disturbance Police are monitoring the situation in Aurukun following a large disturbance on Monday. Whilst investigating a disturbance complaint at a general store a man they were attempting to take into custody became violent and he was subsequently tasered. A group of people have then attended the Police Station and the station and vehicles were hit with projectiles. extra Police officers were sent to the area to assist with investigations. community elders were working with senior Police on Tuesday to address community concerns.

Saturday is day one for fishing and kicks off with a shotgun start from the Evans Landing wharf at 7.30am. This is a sight to see, with the possibility of 20 boats this year, ranging in size from 4.5m to 10m, all racing out to get to the fishing grounds first for the start of fishing at 8am. Target species for the tournament are primarily catch and release Sailfish and Black Marlin but there is a Game Fish category which includes Mackerel, Tuna, Cobia and Dolphin

Fish (Mahi Mahi) which can be weighed-in. Cease fishing is at 4pm with radio schedules twice during the day where all boats call in and register their catches. This is to see which boat is leading the competition and a safety check. Sunday fishing is from 8am until 4pm again. A few boats will be staying down the coast over the duration of the tournament to save on time and fuel and also to have a bit of a social get-together. Monday fishing is from 8am

until 3pm with the weigh-in at the Carpentaria Golf Club from 3pm until 6pm for the Game Fish category. Presentation and prize giving starts at 7pm. New legislation to save lives on Queensland roads WITH the state’s road toll over 200 and more than 3,000 people killed on Queensland roads over the past 10 years, new motor vehicle impoundment legislation is set to come into force on November 1. (see below) Commissioner Ian Stewart said from November 1, 2013 new laws would come into effect which would help curb dangerous behaviour on Queensland roads. “Street racing, burn outs, speed trials and evading police are just some examples of reckless and highly dangerous driver behaviours that will not be tolerated by police or by Queenslanders,” Commissioner Stewart said. “This legislation is not about targeting law abiding drivers or those with legal modiﬁcations but about ensuring those who put the lives of other road users at risk by

their reckless behaviour, face the consequences. “A majority of Queenslanders take care on the road but there is a small minority who think they are above the law. “This new tougher legislation ensures hoons and those who ﬂout road rules know the roads are not their private playgrounds. “Under this new legislation anyone found guilty of a Type 1 motor vehicle offence may have their car impounded, and if they commit two offences within ﬁve years their wheels are gone for good.” Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating, head of the Road Policing Command, said the new laws targeted repeat offenders. “We know that speed kills. Inattention kills. Put them together

Traditional Owners show support for regional plan TWO generations of Traditional Owners of the Mapoon region of the Western Cape have come out in support of the Queensland Government’s Cape York Regional Plan. Aboriginal leader and activist Jean Little OAM and her grandson Jack Wilkie-Jans believe that there are sustainable and working ways by which the environment can be utilised with minimal impact- a fact they say the Wild Rivers legislation overlooked. “This is a step forward from the paternalism of the Wild Rivers legislation,” Mrs Little said “and I hope my country men and women will see real change and advancement in their communities.” Mr Wilkie-Jans said, “a regional plan is what is needed and I congratulate people of all echelons and industries, but

in particular Boyd Scott (a tourism operator based in Mission Beach) for being one of the ﬁrst in the community to bring such a need to the attention of Traditional Owners such as myself and to parliamentarians like Warren Entsch.” Mrs Little said she believed the Cape York Regional Plan would provide a cohesive working strategy to bring Cape York back

However, Mrs Little and Mr Wilkie-Jans have expressed concerns that management of strategic outcomes and consultation tenders may be granted to only a few private institutions such as Balkanu. They are arguing that local Councils or Town Authorities and Traditional Owner run organisations should be given any such funding in order to conduct and implement the diversity strategy (which is the Cape York Regional Plan) from a local level.

ReseARCheRs from James Cook University are leading a new project designed to ensure sustainable use and conservation of Australia’s sharks and rays. Funded by the Australian Government’s Fisheries Research and Development Corporation the project will provide a report card on the status of all of Australia’s sharks and rays, and build a database of science outputs that can be used by fisheries and environmental managers. Professor Colin Simpfendorfer, who is Director of JCU’s Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture (CSTFA), is leading the project. “Globally many species of sharks and rays are under a lot of pressure, especially from overfishing,” he said. “However, Australia is a leader in both research and the science-based management of sharks and rays, so an important part of this project is to make sure we understand how Australia’s sharks and rays are faring in light of these global concerns.” There are about 350 species of sharks and rays that live in Australian

waters, and the project will compile information on all of them to ensure that environmental and fisheries managers have the most credible and up to date information when making decisions. “To date, Australia’s research and management for sharks and rays has focused on a few species that are caught in targeted fisheries or are the subjects of ecotourism,” Andrew Chin, the researcher managing the project at the CSTFA, said. “We want to make sure that we are not forgetting about some of the less common or less commonly studied species”, he said. The report card will provide fisheries and environmental managers with the ability to identify the species that need attention to ensure they are properly managed and conserved. It will also identify species for which research is required to understand their status and improve management. The project will run until mid 2015 and involve working closely with shark and ray researchers around the country to collate information and assess the status of species.

Ice Age struck Indigenous Australians hard From the Australian Geographic A NEW STUDY HAS revealed how Indigenous Australians coped with the last Ice Age, roughly 20,000 years ago. Researchers say that when the climate cooled dramatically, Aboriginal groups sought refuge in well-watered areas, such as along rivers, and populations were condensed into small habitable areas. Professor Sean Ulm, lead author of the research at James Cook University in Townsville, says the vast majority of Australia was simply uninhabitable at this time. “Forests disappeared, animals went extinct; major areas of Australia would have been deprived of surface water.” How humans coped with the last Ice Age To understand how Aboriginal people responded to the conditions, a team of experts from Australia, England, and Canada used the radiocarbon dates of thousands of archaeological sites to study the distribution of people across the landscape over time. The findings, published recently in The Journal of Archaeological Science, suggest that about 21,000 years ago, almost all people in modern-day Australia migrated into smaller areas, abandoning as much as 80 per cent of the continent. “In Lawn Hill Gorge in northwestern Queensland, at the coldest point of the last glacial period, all

Sean says the next step would ideally be to study the resulting cultural shifts, however, this may prove to be difficult given that close to one third of what was Australia at the time of the Ice Age is now underwater. “By 10,000 years ago, sea levels were visibly rising, sometimes on a daily basis,” says Sean.

Extreme changes in the environment continued for thousands of years, and Aboriginal life readjusted in the process. Sean says this makes it unlikely that researchers will ever know the full societal ramifications of the Ice Age. What the study does reveal, however, is that humans have withstood massive climate change on this continent in the past, and this might prove vital for preparing for future events. “A lot of the current climate reports that we read about in Australia...their records only go back a couple of hundred years,” says Sean. “That’s a very short time span to base our model for future climate change on.” Sean adds that, thanks to studies like this, archaeologists may soon have the potential to extend these data sets.

Each year the cancer council calls on Queensland women to get the girls together in the month of October for a Girls’ Night In. The idea behind the Girls Night In is to simply spend a night in with the girls and donate what you would have spent on a night out to help Cancer Council beat women’s cancers. Whether it’s a DVD marathon, a casual dinner party, a pamper evening, a book club, a movie or games night or even just inviting the girls over for a catch up, simply do what you enjoy in support of those you love most. Girls Night In events raise money to fund women’s cancer research, prevention and education programs and support services. Every dollar donated in support of Girls’ Night In helps Cancer Council to support the one in two Queensland women who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. Again this year I had decided on getting a couple of girlfriends together and that I would host a Girls Night In. The night was filled with lots of laughs and many raffles.

Research shows involvement in the arts benefits young people A joint study by the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Education and Social Work and the Australia Council for the Arts has found that engagement in the arts benefits students not just in the classroom, but also in life. STudenTS who are involved in the arts have higher school motivation, engagement in class, selfesteem, and life satisfaction, researchers discovered. The results, published in the latest issue of the prestigious Journal of Educational Psychology, found students who participate in dance, drama, music, and visual arts showed more positive academic and personal wellbeing outcomes than students who were not as involved in the arts. Academic outcomes included motivation, homework completion, class participation, enjoyment of school, and

educational aspirations, while personal wellbeing measures considered such factors as self-esteem, life satisfaction, and a sense of meaning or purpose. Some of the strongest effects were found for students who spent high amounts of quality time in creative and performing arts subjects at school. Positive effects also resulted from home influences, such as how often parents and their children talked about and participated in the arts. Active participation, more than simply being an observer or audience member, also yielded stronger positive ef-

fects on school and personal wellbeing outcomes in the study. According to lead author, Professor Andrew Martin: “The study shows that school participation in the arts can have positive effects on diverse aspects of students’ lives. “Whereas most previous research has been small-scale or focused on students’ enjoyment in specific arts subjects, such as music, dance, drama, and visual arts, our research was large-scale and assessed outcomes beyond the arts domain,” he said. “It shows that the arts can impact broader academic and personal wellbeing outcomes for young people.” At a time when different subject areas must compete for space in the school curriculum, the study’s findings also em-

phasise the importance of the arts in the school curriculum, according to Associate Professor Michael Anderson, one of the study’s co-authors. “This study provides new and compelling evidence that the arts should be central to schooling and not left on the fringes,” he said. Australia Council Acting Director Community Partnerships Dr David Sudmalis said the results raised significant policy implications for how arts-based learning is integrated into the school curriculum. “Not only does this study demonstrate that the arts help deliver positive outcomes in engagement and motivation for students outside of the arts domain, it also shows that high quality, participatory arts education has the greatest impact,” Dr Sudmalis said.

The latest cohort of Indigenous PathWays Solutions (IPS) trainees have commenced an eight-week Work Start program and begun working towards their goal of fulltime employment. Indigenous PathWays Solutions (IPS) is a locally owned indigenous company. IPS has facilitated a work readiness program for Rio Tinto in Weipa since 2010, and the latest intake of the program commenced in Napranum last week. IPS has facilitated seven “Work Start” programs over the past five years, with 79 participants undertaking the programs and more than 80 per cent of these transitioning into full-time employment . Participants of IPS programs have maintained a retention level in employment of more than 70 per cent . The IPS Work Start program co-operates with Rio Tinto to allow these participants the best opportunity to be prepared for these roles. Current participants have completed the certificate one of their training this week and are moving onto certificate two level. The WSP participants have been building their confidence and developing their understanding of processes they will need to undertake to work for a company like RTA. Over the next eight weeks the IPS WSP participants will undertake: Certificate training, pre-work medicals, literacy and numeracy studies, work shadowing and confidence/team building activities.

MPower supports individuals and families to manage money for basic material needs, build capabilities through financial literacy and behavioural change and build assets through saving and disciplined money management. About the Role The position will require the employee to live full time in Cape York Peninsula Communities. The MPower Coach is the first point of contact for Opportunity Hub clients and will identify the client needs referring them to the appropriate Hub services. The MPower Coach will facilitate the development of a client action plan and budget and will work alongside clients using sound coaching principles and techniques to guide the progress of activities. The key accountabilities are to provide coaching and monitoring of the MPower plan and assist client adherence to activity plans and budgets.

Some of the MPower objectives are: • to enable families to manage money so that basic material needs (food, clothing, shelter etc.,) are provided for; • to enable families to manage money; • to enable families to build assets and realise aspirations through saving and disciplined money management.

Selection criteria • must be able to conduct and take part in community engagement; • experience within a similar role or from a customer service related role consulting to clientele; • ability to interact with and mentor indigenous people with empathy and respect for cultural protocols; • ability to build positive change in small steps; • tertiary qualifications in social science, indigenous studies, business management is preferred; • successful completion of an accredited coaching course e.g., coaching competency units from business qualification; • financial planning experience; • experience in leading a team of up to 5 personnel.

About the Role Due to our increasing growth we need a committed person to join our Positive Parenting team as a Consultant in Aurukun. The Positive Parenting Consultant is responsible for oversighting the day to day operations of the three parenting programs running within It takes a village to raise a child. These are Baby College, Positive Kids and Strong Families. The Consultant provides technical expertise and coaching support to the Positive Parenting team in delivering Triple P to community participants. This role reports to the Program Delivery Manager.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas THE Grand Final has been played and won by the best team all year the mighty Hawthorn footy club. Some Grand Finals take your breath away with sustained brilliance. Others break your heart with dramatic, aweinspiring comebacks. To coin a phrase, Hawthorn won their 11th premiership with a victory that was deliciously ugly. It started with the invasion of the Purple Haze driving buses, chartering planes, hitch-hiking, crawling or doing whatever they had to do to make it to Melbourne to watch their Freo boys have a crack at bringing home the coveted Grand Final Cup back West. It may not have been the prettiest display of football but was definitely one of the hardest grand finals that has been played in recent times. The crowd of 100,007 people sure got their monies worth as they watched both teams put in their all on Saturday afternoon at the G for the Holy Grail of AFL. The bigest talking point from the game was Fremantle’s inaccuracy in front of goal. The final score being 11.11.77 to 8.14.62 and a lot of the behinds came from easy set shots. Just nerves got the better of the maiden Grand Finalists. The big news now is that Buddy Franklin looks set to leave Hawthorn and become a Sydney Swan that is right not a Giant. The Swans have put on the table a $7M, 5 year deal. If you have got the talent that someone wants why not get the most for it. We will see in 2014 how Buddy and Tippet combine. The Hawks think that they can survive and even win the 2014 flag without Buddy. Well they proved they could win games during the season without him. The Free Agency trade period starts this week so it will be interesting to see who will be going where. I suppose West Coast and Essendon should think about announcing a coach soon if it intends to attract any players or have any sort of organisational structure. I would lastly like to thank Dallas and Scoop for writing an informative and enteretaining column each week and our sponsors who supported our footy tipping comp in both codes and all the tippers and readers. MANLY upset the favourites as the Rabbitohs choke one game away from the Grand Final. As this was the weekend of the Preliminary finals, it was do or die to all teams still in the running for the Premiership. Friday night’s game was between the Rabbitohs and the Sea Eagles. Rabbitohs went into the match being the favourites and started as if they were on the money. But the tables soon turned as the Sea Eagles ran away with the win. On Saturday the Roosters played the Knights, with a lot of questions being thrown around in the build-up to the match in regards to “Wayne Bennet’s Knight’s” being the real deal! The match started with a huge blow to the Knight’s with their captain Danny Buderus being concussed in the opening minutes. This later payed a toll on the game and the Roosters won comfortably despite a late charge from the Knights. This meaning the Manly Sea Eagles and the Sydney City Roosters progress to the Grand Final in hopes of being Premiers of the 2013 NRL season. So at last the main game is being played this Sunday, and the question is who will win the Premiership?? The Manly Sea Eagles have flown under the radar all season with other teams being in the limelight. If the Sea Eagles are a chance it would have a lot to do with the 6 & 7, they are both young but have proved to be very worthy of stepping up when needed to in big games. Their other danger man is Jamie Lyon who can change the game at any given chance. On the other hand the Roosters have been in the headlines all season, and of late for the wrong reasons. Can they handle all the headlines leading into the big game? For them to be a chance they will rely heavily on the go forward from their highly mobile pack, and the kicking game of Maloney and Pearce off the back of it. Karl’s tips: Roosters. China gets among the Mackerel

LAST Saturday Dylan Wilhelmi and I, fishing out of Dylan’s boat, hit the mother lode of Mackerel down off Pera Head. We were tolling for Billfish when one of our teaser lures was taken by what turned out to be a Longtail Tuna. After resetting the gear we started to troll again to hook up on a Mackerel - and that’s when the fun began. After landing the fish we had literally hundreds of Mackerel swimming around the boat so I introduced Dylan to spinning for them. In my haste I put out a cast with a bumper-bar lure without a wire trace and it was monstered on the drop, only to be bitten off after setting the hook. Lesson one: lure minus

wire plus Mackerel equals no lure. After rigging a Spanyid 80 gram with wire it was then just a case of cast, wind as fast as you can, and hook up. We only had one outfit that was capable of doing the job - a Samaki Vanquish Saltist 4500 and 50lb braid fished off a drag setting that by hand couldn’t pull the line of the reel, but when the Mackerel put on the after-burners they would pull off line at will. We took turns at using the outfit, as after a few fish this old bloke needed a rest. Dylan has never experienced this style of fishing and he just couldn’t believe what was happening. Fish would miss the lure, turn in their own body length, and nail the lure on the second pass.

This was great fun until the tax man turned up in the shape of an extremely large Tiger Shark and took a liking to Mackerel. I have fished for big Tiger Sharks off Sydney and I couldn’t believe the turn of speed it had when it decided that it wanted that Mackerel. Tiger Shark one, Mackerel, lure and China nil. I was out of chromebodied lures so this sent Dylan off on a search mission and he scrounged up a rusty old 40gm Spanyid, and after a quick refurbish Dylan was back in the game. The smaller lure was attacked with as much relish as the bigger one. I tried to fish the bottom but the resident evil (i.e. the bull sharks) just wouldn’t leave me alone. While I was

spinning Dylan hooked-up something fast off the bottom and landed our second Tuna which took a liking to his Squid bait. On Thursday the water conditions were poor, with green water everywhere but we had good purple blue water. We didn’t get a Billfish but I’m pretty sure that Dylan had a day that will be etched in his mind forever. Speaking of Billfish Weipa Billfish Club are holding their annual competition over the long weekend, with a briefing and registration on Friday night at the Carpentaria Golf Club at 7pm and Stretch running a calcutta at 8pm. There are some great prizes on offer, including a Simrad sounder, so if your keen come along I’m sure the

boys and girls in the club will help you get on your way. On Sunday the wind came up again so the rivers were the go. The Mission River has been fishing very well for land-based and boat anglers alike with Notso scoring over 100 Barra including a cracker of a fish of 74cm. Young Paiwan Lui, fishing with his family at the bridge scored an even bigger fish than Notso’s at 80cm on basically a Bream outfit – good work Paiwan. There is plenty of bait at the bridge and Paul Cook and his wife went there to get his boat wet with Weipa water and nailed some big Blue Salmon and lost an unstoppable. A good way to christen your boat in Weipa. The Evans Landing

jetty has Grunter at night on Prawns. Darren from Tackle World Charters has found a few metery Barra for his clients during the week. Jim Borthwick has also found the big fish up the Hey arm as well. There are some good Grunter in the creeks taking Prawns along with the plague of Bream. The water temp in the side creeks is up to 30 degrees and around the 28 degrees in the main river so the options are good for outside or river fishing. My pick would be the Billfish comp which is catch, tag or photo and release. The only capture section is for the nominated gamefish. WEIPA’s Jimmy Baira played a leading role for the Kulpiyam Tigers which went through the Arthur Beetson Murri Knockout rugby league carnival from September 26 to 29 at Ipswich undefeated. But in a cruel twist, Kulpiyam was eliminated in a quarter final on September 28 after drawing 10-all with Cherbourg United. The Cherbourg United team was declared the winner under carnival rules for scoring first and advanced to the semi-final. Cherbourg had the services of Parramatta and former South Sydney star Chris Sandow who is from the southern Queensland Aboriginal community. A total of 26 sides contested the Deadly Choices Men’s division and Kulipyam won all of their qualifying games to reach the final 16. Baira starred for Kulpiyam when they beat star studded Curacoa Crusaders, which had won the 2012 Cairns Allblacks carnival, 18-6 in their knockout semi-finals which featured the top 16 sides. The Weipa electrician had travelled to Ipswich with his wife Cicely and their children Georgina, aged 3, and Samuel, 2, for the huge carnival. Kulpiyam’s big win over Curacoa Crusaders was seen live on NITV which broadcast the final two days of the popular carnival. That match was played in hot and slippery

KOWANYAMA looks set to host an Aboriginal/Allblacks rugby league carnival in late October and has invited Cape York and Three Rivers teams to compete. Organiser Dave Kennedy said that he hopes to attract 10 teams to Kowanyama for the carnival which is scheduled for October 26 and 27. Kennedy said he would love to attract teams from Weipa, Pormpuraaw, Napranum, Mapoon, Aurukun, Coen, Lockhart River, Cooktown, Hope Vale and Wujal Wujal there. “It would be excellent to have sides which played in the Cape Cluster, Wet Season and Three Rivers area come here and it will be a good chance to play some top remote area football and meet up with friends,” Kennedy said. Kennedy said that it would be a great opportunity for sides and players from these remote communities to compete. He said the prize money on offer would be decided once the number of nominated teams was determined. “The roads will be open then and we don’t expect any major rain,” he said. The Kowanyama ground should be in top top shape for the carnival. “It is being watered and will be ready by the time of the carnival,” he said. Kowanyama hosted its first complete round of the Cape York Cluster rugby league competition on July 13 and more than 1000 spectators turned out. Weipa Sportfishing Club’s Gaven Roberts landed this nice Mackerel during the club’s last competition. The next competition will be held on October 12 and 13.

WEIPA Sportfishing Club members hosted former members Col and Liz Howell on the weekend of September 20-22 at Clough’s Landing on the Wenlock River. Col and Liz are back in Weipa to catch up with family and friends and to partake in the great Barra ﬁshing around at this time of year. Amazingly the mozzies were at an acceptable level for even the French’s to stay a night at Clough’s. Not one of my favourite places to camp as the mozzies usually gorge themselves on my Kiwi blood. The ﬁshing was steady over the course of the weekend. Phil

and Nick managed to release a couple of nice Barra in the 90cm range and caught a few smaller ones also. They also had a mixed bag of good size Grunter, Blue Salmon and Jewel fish. Col and Liz got into the Barra also, venturing up river and trying a few new spots. They did have trouble holding onto a few bigger specimens though. The French family ventured downstream and picked up a rat Barra trolling a deep diver for Lewis and then caught a nice 75cm fish and a couple more rats fishing live baits in one of the feeder creeks. Blue Salmon also featured in the catch.

Sunday I ventured out wide with Gaven Roberts and son Dylan principally to target Billfish but we did have the 4kg gear aboard for Tuna and Mackerel. The Billies were on holiday that day but we did manage a Mackerel each for Gaven and myself, and a couple of Tuna for Dylan. Unfortunately we had to go up in line weight as the ﬁsh we hooked on 4kg were getting sharked. Gaven also managed a Tarpon off Evans Landing Wharf the night before. Weigh-in was at the French house and it was nice to meet and welcome new member Steve La Rose and his son

Archer. Phil ended up taking out the men’s comp weighing in three 100-point ﬁsh which is a real achievement. Dylan pipped Lewis by .4 of a kilo to take out the juniors, and Dylan and Nick won the lucky lure prize. The next competition will be October 12 and 13 with the weigh-in being at Nick and Elisa’s (20 Pandanus Parade at 5.30pm on October 13).
