Exotic pest plant found in Weipa
While this cooking plant may be tasty it could cause serious damage to the local environment if it spreads.
AN exotic pest plant used in Asian cooking has been found in two Weipa residential properties prompting Biosecurity Queensland to warn landowners to be on the lookout for any signs of Cha-om or Pennata wattle (Senegalia pennata subsp. insuavis). Biosecurity Queensland officer Corey Bell said Chaom was a fast-growing, thorny shrub that could do real damage to the North Queensland environment by invading pastures and natural areas. “In this case, we’re worried about plants spreading into natural areas, nearby grazing country or mine rehabilitation sites,” he said. “The young shoots of the plant are commonly used in Thai-style cooking.
Cairns
“While it may have a great flavour, the flowers, leaves and stems have a very strong odour which can help distinguish this weed from similar looking plants. “Cha-om is declared a Class 1 pest plant under Queensland legislation and landholders must take reasonable steps to keep their property free of this pest.” Mr Bell said Cha-om could be confused with a native subspecies Kerrii, which is a climbing vine with tendrils and hooks and yellow to cream flowers with a strong perfume. Kerrii is native and not a declared species. Other similar looking plants include: • Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) which doesn’t have a pungent smell or thorns
• Poinciana (Delonix regia) grows into a large tree with red flowers and it’s seed pods are much larger (3040cm long) • Sensitive weed (Mimosa pudica) grows as a ground cover, has pink flowers and the leaves close up when touched. If you see a suspicious plant, report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 so officers can assist in accurately identifying the plant and, if necessary, removing it. It is a serious offence to introduce, keep or supply a Class 1 pest without a permit issued by Biosecurity Queensland. Penalties of up to $88,000 apply. For more information on Cha-om, visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

Taskforce launches Cape York turtle and dugong plan TRADITIONAL Saltwater people of Cape York launched their blueprint for turtle, dugong and sea country management last weekend in Cairns. Cape York is home to some of the most globally significant populations of dugong, six species of marine turtles and the largest turtle nesting site in the world at Raine Island. All saltwater groups on Cape York have participated in the development of the Cape York Turtle and Dugong Management Strategy, a Regional Plan, and clan groups have produced Local Plans. Both the regional and local plans outline sustainable management through closures, quotas, regulatory systems and management activities. Cape York Traditional Owner Harold Ludwick said Traditional Custodians believe it is their responsibility to manage the impacts of human activity
on land and sea and the animals in those environments. “While we have the right to hunt turtle and dugong, we do not have the rights or resources that enable us to exercise and enforce our responsibilities to these animals,” Mr Ludwick said. “Our Strategy outlines the critical legal reforms needed to empower Indigenous groups to enforce regulations on the ground. “This Strategy is critical to ensuring the long term conservation of turtle and dugong in Cape York and neighbouring territories. It cements, for the first time, regional and subregional cooperation on this issue,” he said. The first regional meetings began in 2011 where elders and seniors from all over the Cape very quickly discovered common concerns about their sea country. continued page 2

a comprehensive community participation process involving all saltwater clan groups and stakeholders, with 76 meetings across 22 communities on the Cape and more than 60 individual and small group meetings,” Mr Ludwick said. A Taskforce of representatives nominated by saltwater communities was established to link communities and to help formulate this regional approach. “While research shows that we have healthy dugong populations in Cape York waters, dugong conservation world-wide is largely dependent on what we do here in Australia as most dugongs are found in the waters of developing nations with limited capacity to contain the impacts within sustainable limits,” Traditional Owner Harold Ludwick said. “ We a r e r e a d y t o implement the rules and regulations outlined in our strategy and have asked the State and Federal Governments to support us in doing this.”

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. DEAR DIARY, I went to bed so upset... It is months since I was Prime Minister but I still wake up worrying about that obnoxious Mr Rudd and all his dirty tricks. You would imagine that now he has made a complete fool of himself in front of the entire electorate, I would have banished him from my dreams all together. Mind you, he is only taking some of my dreamtime. What is really giving me sleepless nights is the continuing disaster of

Pig predation – the biggest threat to turtle reproduction on Cape York
This confronting image is from the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) monitoring program conducted by the Australian Department of Agriculture. It shows the stomach contents of a feral pig which included more than 30 Flatback turtle hatchlings/eggs. This particular pig was sampled in November 2006 near a beach at the mouth of the Jardine River on Cape York. This animal was one of 10-15 others moving away from the beach where evidence of pigs predating on turtle nests had been observed earlier that morning. This problem continues.
Tony Abbott. Now it is true I have no time at all for him. He is no gentleman. The difference between him and Mr Rudd is that Tony, at least, does not pretend to be friendly, intelligent or good for Australia. Now he is embarrassing the nation by going on foreign visits to people who are well aware of the things he has been saying in Parliament. I would have been very ashamed to stand before the Indonesian President and say, “Yes, well, I did say certain things about asylum seekers and people smugglers, but that was just to get elected. The Australian people made me say them; no-one else actually believed them. You didn’t, did you?” My toes would have been curling to meet the Malaysian Prime Minister after sinking the Malaysian Solution to boat people. Honestly, the things he said about

Malaysia – it is just as well he has the Murdoch press as part of his coalition. If I had still been steering the country, they would have been holding my feet to the fire, as well as accusing me of having a pear-shaped figure. (Sometimes that sort of thing really put me off my breakfast for a day or two.) In the early hours, I turn over and over in my bed thinking about what I might have done but, realistically, I know it was impossible. The small mistake would be punished mercilessly in front of everyone. Tony is much luckier. He can do all sorts of things and no-one notices. Did you know he has been using public money to attend weddings? Or to enjoy himself competing as an Iron Man? I thought not. If it had been me, I would have had to pay for everything myself and the only press coverage would have been commenting on the size of my bum...

New approvals process to benefit landholders and miners AN overhaul of the approvals process for coal and mineral exploration will give landholders and resources companies more certainty by allowing for earlier engagement and faster approvals. Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said the new process had the potential to halve the time taken for companies to be granted exploration permits, while maintaining rigorous environmental, native title and land access assessments. “We have listened to requests from the resources sector for faster, more efficient approval timeframes and we are delivering,” Mr Cripps said. “Mining is one of the key pillars of the Queensland economy and streamlining this process will let resource companies get on with business. “For example, the more streamlined process means exploration permits subject to native title can be decided in less than 12 months, while permits not subject to native title can be determined in six months or sooner. “This is a significant reduction on the average 22 months it currently takes for an exploration permit application to be processed to the stage where it can be granted or rejected.”
Mr Cripps said the new approach was also good news for rural landholders in their negotiations with resource companies. “It means mining companies no longer need to wait until an exploration permit is granted before engaging with landholders about their proposed exploration activities,” he said. “Those discussions can now happen much earlier, giving rural producers more time to consider and negotiate land access and conduct compensation agreements put to them by resource companies.” Mr Cripps stressed that in line with the existing regulatory framework, no exploration activities could begin in an area prior to a permit being granted. “Applications to explore will still be subject to the same stringent assessment process to ensure they meet strict environmental, technical and commercial viability, community interest, native title and land access requirements,” he said. “A granted exploration permit is not a right to mine, and the Queensland Resources Council estimates that approximately only one in every 200 granted exploration permits ever goes on to become a mine.”

Under the new process: • Companies will now be formally advised within 90 days of lodgement whether their proposed exploration works program for a project has been approved or rejected. • For successful applications not subject to native title, once a work program has been approved and an environmental authority has been issued, a permit can be granted after annual rent has been paid. • For applications subject to na-
tive title, it means companies can start required native title processes and engage landholders about conduct and compensation arrangements a lot sooner. • These permit applications can then be finalised within 30 days of the native title process being concluded. More information about exploration in Queensland is available at www.dnrm.qld.gov. au or at www.mines.industry. qld.gov.au
Review of Indigenous training and employment PRIME Minister Tony Abbott announced last Tuesday that a review of Indigenous training and employment programs has been commissioned. “The Government is committed to boosting job opportunities for indigenous Australians. However, too often, employment and training programmes provide ‘training for training’s sake’ without the practical skills that people need to fill the jobs that exist, Mr Abbott said. “It is important that attention be given not just to skills training, but practical life education and ongoing
WHAT’S ON...
mentoring to make sure jobs are lasting and careers are developed for indigenous Australians.” The review will provide recommendations to ensure Indigenous training and employment services are targeted and administered to connect unemployed Indigenous people with real and sustainable jobs. It will consider ways that training and employment services can better link to the commitment of employers to provide sustainable employment opportunities for Indigenous people and end the cycle of
Indigenous disadvantage. “Australians yearn to see practical and genuine improvement in the lives of Aboriginal people,” Mr Abbott said. “There is so much goodwill. The challenge, though, is to convert good intentions into practical change for the better.” The Review of Indigenous Training and Employment will be chaired by Andrew Forrest who will work closely with the Government’s Indigenous Advisory Council and will report to Mr Abbott by April 7, 2014.

HOW do you get 29 high school students onto one pallet? Students from the Western Cape College Weipa Campus were faced with this dilema during a two-day workshop conducted at the Weipa Residential Campus last week. The 29 students were nominated by their peers to participate in the ‘Helping Friends’ workshop as they were identified as a friend they would go to if they had a problem. The program was co-delivered by Queensland Health and Education Queensland staff and was facilitated by WCC school nurse Lyn James, Naomi Furlong, VPG, Cicely Baira and Charisa Hill. The ‘Helping Friends” program was developed as a way of helping young people to deal with the problems they confront. The students selected to participate in the program gained skills and guidance to enable them to accept a supporting role for others. Lyn James expressed her gratitude to the staff at the residential campus and Debbie Ferraris for assisting with the participant’s T-shirts.
Above and below: this is how you get 29 students on one pallet – trust and helping friends.

Urquhart Point mining lease granted METALLICA Minerals announced the granting of its Mining Lease, (ML) 20669, over the Urquhart Point Zircon-Rutile Mineral Sands Project on Tuesday, October 15, 2013. The lease is held 100 per cent by wholly-owned Metallica subsidiary, Oresome Australia Pty Ltd. The granting of the Urquhart Point Mining Lease is the second major milestone for the project in as many months, with the Queensland Government last month awarding the key environmental approval for Urquhart Point. The new mining lease covers an area of 366 hectares and has been granted for a 10-year term, until October 31, 2023. Metallica is in advanced discussions with a number of interested parties for project development funding and zircon-rutile product offtake. The Urquhart Point Project, part of a large low lying sand mass located three kilometres southwest of Weipa, covers high-grade mineral sands from surface to an average depth of two to three metres. Oresome’s general manager, Stewart Hagan said the support received from the Wik and Wik Waya people was greatly appreciated. “The Traditional Owners have assisted us every step of the way, and we now look forward to working with them through the proposed development and construction phase to bring the project into production for our mutual benefit.” Oresome’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was accepted by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and an Environmental Authority issued last month. Oresome has also entered into a Native Title Agreement with the Traditional Landowners.

PROFESSIONAL counsellor Yvette Carter will be opening the doors to her Weipa practice, Cape Counselling on Monday, October 21. A member of the Australian Counselling Association, a qualified nurse, and currently studying a Bachelor of Counselling and Psychology, Mrs Carter has 30 years experience in counselling and is looking forward to providing her services to the local community. “There is a huge gap in counselling services in the area and we face specific issues living in a remote area that nobody else does,” Mrs Carter said. “Living in Weipa myself I understand these issues; which can include dealing with the climate, living away from family and even the cost of living. “Because of our remote location we have a lack of resources and there is no face-to-face support, so I aim to provide that service.” Mrs Carter has travelled the
world, and Australia and said she believes that human issues are universal. “When we lived in Africa I worked at the United States Embassy in Mozambique as a counsellor. Before we came to Weipa I worked at the refinery in Gove as a counsellor for 700 men and developed an understanding of issues affecting remote workers, including financial problems, relationship breakdowns and the resultant substance abuse.” Mrs Carter has experience in probation and parole, depression, anger and stress management, healthy relationships, conflict resolution and alcohol and drug counselling is her specialty field. Sessions are roughly an hour and can be one-off or ongoing, as organised between Mrs Carter and the client. “The service is confidential and if warranted I can also refer clients,” she said. Entsch visits the Western Cape NEWLY re-elected Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has visited Weipa to catch up with local leaders and constituents, taking advantage of the post-election parliamentary hiatus. “It always takes a little time for the new government to get things in place so I thought I’d take the opportunity to touch base with the key regional centres – last week I visited Weipa and the week before that it was Cooktown and the Torres Strait,” Mr Entsch said. The MP met with the Weipa Town Authority and sat in on discussions about the new Regional Plan. “I wanted to get an overview of what is being considered and where the WTA is looking to go,”
Mr Entsch said. “It ties in very well with the direction we’ll be taking with the White Paper on Northern Australia. “There was a focus on the original Cape York Peninsula Land Use Strategy (CYPLUS) 1 document, which in my view was the only genuine land-use document of the four CYPLUS plans. I’m pleased to see they’re looking at the recommendations that came out of that as it highlights agriculture, pastoral and tourism opportunities, all of which would help diversify Weipa’s economic base. “Between the Regional Plan and White Paper, I see huge possibilities opening up in the region.” Mr Entsch also visited Napra-
num Aboriginal Shire Council, meeting with Mayor Philemon Mene and CEO Amos Njaramba and discussing a range of topics including council’s plans to build tourist cabins and a van park on the waterfront. “It’s very exciting to see the initiatives underway in Napranum, particularly the new housing subdivisions, and it was interesting to learn that the locally-produced homes were $100,000 cheaper than those shipped up from the south,” Mr Entsch said. “We also discussed council’s original project for the 150,000 ha agricultural development at Billy’s Lagoon - this could fit in very well with the White Paper opportunities

I WANTED to take this opportunity to promote an upcoming weekend program for all young quad bike riders and owners. As part of “Quad Safe Weipa” the Weipa Town Authority has partnered with the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce, the Weipa Fishing Classic, Western Cape College, Serco Sodexo Defence Services, Weipa Auto, Quad Safe Australia, Weipa Police and of course, our friends here at the Western Cape Bulletin, to stage a weekend for under-16 riders. We have been able to source and subsidise comprehensive training courses, targeted specifically at young riders. Normally at a cost of around $180, thanks to the strong community support WTA and its partners will be providing the training for $25 per head. Registrations with payment of the fee will be accepted through Town Office at Rocky Point, with numbers for each half day course strictly limited. I would like to recommend to families that own and operate quad bikes, that these courses will be invaluable for young riders in developing good safe riding practices. Courses are available on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27. As an added bonus Quad Safe Australia will also be sticking around for an extra few

days for senior training. Contact numbers are advertised on page 5 of this week’s Bully. Aside from the quad bike safety, safety around the boat ramps has been highlighted on social media over the past few weeks; specifically regarding the presence of large saltwater crocodiles. I will be meeting with the Minister Andrew Powell this week to try and develop a partnership to deal with the ongoing issue of large animals moving into areas adjacent to our boat ramps. This has been a problem since the early 1990s that I am aware of, with animals possibly attracted to these areas due to the constant
boat traffic, human activity and availability to discarded bait or fish frames. To continue the safety message: to campers, hunters and visitors to the region please be aware of the recent temperature increases when you are in the bush. A lot of country that hasn’t been burnt yet is tinder dry. A wildfire can ‘rip through’ the country in a heartbeat. Please, take extra care when you are parking and walking with dogs, or travelling through some of the remaining unburnt country on quads or 4WDs. Hope to see the under-16 quad riders on October 26 and 27.

Napranum leadership workshop a resounding success THE second Napranum Leadership and Capability program has been hailed a ‘resounding success’ by organisers, participants and government representatives. The three-day event, targeted at locals aged between 18 and 35, forms a key part of the Napranum community’s “Whole of Community Change Program” which was launched last year in partnership with Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council and Dynamic Exchange. Workshop facilitator Annalise Jennings said she was “thrilled” with the result with a further 30 Napranum locals participating. “This program is a huge first for any Indigenous community in Australia and the people of Napranum should be commended for their hands-on approach to creating real change in their town,” she said. “I am very encouraged the communities have chosen to develop and implement their own plan for the future. “This program ignites potential in every aspect of the community from parents and school kids to leaders and elders,” she said. Throughout the workshop participants engaged in personality profiling, up-skilling, confidence building exercises, career selection as well as lessons in real leadership and personal empowerment. Participant Rachael Ara described her experience as “awesome.” “It has shown me how to identify what I want out of life and the impor-
tance of staying positive,” she said. Ms Jennings said many of the previous participants had already secured employment opportunities as a direct result of the workshop. “The program has also been embraced by other Cape communities including Aurukun and Mapoon who will run similar events in the coming weeks,” she said. David Kempton, Member for Cook, thanked representatives from Rio Tinto, the local council and other key stakeholders who celebrated with this year’s graduates at a special function in the Napranum Community Hall on Friday night. “I am proud to be part of a government committed to ensuring Aboriginal communities are given direct input into their future by creating opportunities for economic development and growth. With this opportunity comes a responsibility to leave a healthy legacy for future generations. “The State recognises a balance between community growth and economic development is the pathway to sustainable progress in indigenous towns.” Ms Jennings welcomed the continuing support of the Queensland Government. “The government’s role is one of support, not implementation if the growth is to be sustainable,” she said. The graduates are now actively seeking employment in their areas of choice.

Toll Marine Logistics has the freight service to match your consignment needs.
LAKELAND is a well known locality in Cape York, both in terms of its history as well as being a popular tourist destination. As such, Lakeland is often promoted as the gateway to the Cape. Lakeland was named after William Lakeland, who was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1840 and who, later in his life, became one of the earliest explorers, prospectors and business operators in the Cape York Peninsula area. In 1873, in association with Christie Palmeston, Lakeland prospected the newly discovered Palmer River goldfield. As part of his explorations, at the time in partnership with Robert Sefton, he found gold on the Batavia River, which later became known as the Wenlock River. Lakeland, Sefton and others in this prospecting party were also to discover the Coen goldfield. Later, Lakeland and his party surveyed an access track into the area, assisting in the development and viability of the field. Lakeland also discovered the Hamilton and Claudie Rivers with the Claudie being named for his son Claude Lakeland. Lakeland was also an important member of the J.T. Embley survey expeditions of 1884-5. Following these expeditions, again in company with others, he undertook further exploratory journeys through

the region. Among his further discoveries was wolfram in the vicinity of the Pascoe River, later to be known as the Bowden field, named in honour of one of Lakeland’s associates on the journey. Lakeland died tragically in 1920, during a journey from Coen to Mount Carter, but his remains were not discovered until 1923. He was commemorated by a marble headstone, erected in 1924/5 at the site where his remains were eventually located. Lakeland was one of the Cape’s most energetic explorers and his contribution to the early understanding of the area’s resources, as well as its later development, ensures his place in Queensland’s history. The photograph below was taken in around 1900, shows William Lakeland together with members of his family. At the time this photograph was taken, his occupation and place of residence is recorded as battery owner, Neville Creek near Laura, further showing his wide involvement and interest in the area.

Weipa’s Jimmy Baira played with Wongai Warriors and is with wife Cicely and nephew Joe Bond.
SIX Napranum players made the long journey from Cape York to compete at the huge Bindal Allblacks carnival in Townsville on the weekend. Brothers Alfred and William Bond, Jason Nixon and his sons Shaq and Whyte and Graham Alexander played for Bindal Sharks in the 22 team men’s competition. Weipa’s Jimmy Baira lined up for Wongai Warriors and shone. Winger Alfred Bond scored one of the tries of the carnival in round one when he ran 80 metres near one sideline to score. Bindal Sharks defeated Palm Island Barracudas (2) 28-16 in that game. Carnival organiser Jenny Pryor said most of the Napranum lads were related to her family. “They are related to
us on our Kaanju tribe side of our grandmother Bessie Lymburner,” Jenny said. Wongai Warriors beat Mt Garnet 46-6 in round one. Whyte Nixon told the Bully that the majority of the Napranum lads travelled from their home by road. “It was a 10-hour drive to Cairns and then another four hours to Townsville,” he said. Wo n g a i Wa r r i o r s made the quarter finals before being eliminated by carnival top guns Cannonballs. Bindal Sharks made the semi finals of the men’s silver section. THE WINNERS A star-studded Cannonballs won the grand final of the Bindal carnival defeating quality Mackay team GH United 28-16. Murri Bama, a side made up of players from
Palm Island, Yarrabah, Cairns and the Torres Strait beat Innisfail Waru 22-16 in the silver men’s final. Stars for Murri Bama which was coached by Norman Bounghi were halfback Brian Murgha, utility Maipele Morseu from Badu Island, Elia Ware, Noel Underwood and Adrian Poynter. In the plate final for the Kevin Aldridge Shield, Mareeba side K a r o o c h a Wa r r i o r s easily beat Girringun Pirates from Cardwell. Garbutt Magpies won the Master’s final and Bowen the under 19 grade for the third year in a row. S o m e C a p e Yo r k players will travel to Cairns next weekend for the Allblacks there whilst others will go to TI for the popular Zenadth Kes carnival.
Weipa rider to tackle Crocodile Trophy LOCAL mountain bike rider Steve Rankine is heading to Cairns this week to compete in the world’s oldest mountain bike stage race, the Crocodile Trophy. Competing in the elite category Steve will be joining his Tenni’s Cairns Home Loans team mates Brendon Skerke, Paul Mashford, Jon Standage and Bart Duraj to compete in the 900km race from Cairns to Cooktown, covering 15,000 metres of elevation. The Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa employee is no stranger to extreme sports, having competed in triathlons from the age of 14, turning professional at 17 years of age. He also spent time in Europe competing in road cycling events and has trained at the Australian Institute of Sport. Steve is currently pumping
the pedals two to three hours a day when on shift, and training for four hours each day on his days off, in preparation for the Crocodile Trophy. This year marks the 19th edition of the International Crocodile Trophy Stage Race which has become known as the oldest, hardest and most adventurous mountain bike stage race in the world. Steve finished last year’s race in seventh place in the elite category and was the fastest Australian in the race, and he is hoping his preparation will see him place well in this year’s event. The 2013 Crocodile Trophy will be held from October 19 to 27 and you can follow the team’s progress on the facebook page Tenni’s – Cairns Home Loans Racing Team.

RUNNERS and walkers took to the streets of Weipa on Saturday morning to participate in the Blue Fun Run. Sixty three open and 14 junior runners raised just over $800 for the Mental Health Foundation from their entry fee and food gold coin donations. Each competitor was presented with a medallion at the end of the run, followed by a bacon and egg burger supplied by Sodexo staff. Event organisers, Bianca Graham said she and fellow organiser Kris Walker were
delighted with the turn-out. “It was a very early Saturday morning start for everyone and the weather was quite hot so it was great to see so many people participate,” Bianca said. “I would like to acknowledge the contribution from Rio Tinto Alcan and Sodexo who helped us make this event happen, and our fun run volunteers who made sure everyone was safe.” A member of the 2011 Indigenous Marathon Project team, Bianca flies out of Weipa on Friday to begin her journey to

FROM Cape York to the Torres Strait, Brisbane and Mt Isa Matt Bowen is a legend with rugby league fans. Bowen was honoured to receive an award on Saturday, October 12 in recognition of his contribution to grass roots and professional rugby league. A plaque was presented to Bowen during the official opening ceremony at the Bindal Allblacks carnival in Townsville at which Napranum and Weipa players competed. One of those who made the presentation to Bowen, who played more games for the North Queensland Cowboys than anybody else, was his grandfather Hans Pearson with heritage from Hope Vale and Cooktown. Hans spoke in language and then said that Bowen had been a genuine role model for people everywhere. “My grandson, you have been a great example of all the right things and you are a credit to the community. He always signs autographs for kids,” Hans said. Others who spoke at the presentation were Catholic Bishop Michael Putney who said Bowen was a wonderful person who was also a great footballer. Aunty Lorna Doolan said she had not recognised him when he turned up. “I am used to Matt in Cowboys gear playing football,” Aunty Lorna said. Matt said it was “an honour and privilege” to receive the award. With him at Brother’s League’s

Club where the carnival was held were Matt’s wife and children. Carnival organiser Jenny Pryor said Matt had done great things for grass roots and professional football. In the past Matt has coached teams which competed at the Bindal and Cairns Allblacks carnivals. Former Bindal Sharks club player Jonathon Reuben also received an award for his ability, having just signed a three-year contract with the Sydney Roosters after playing with the Canberra Raiders under-20 Holden Cup team in 2013.
Germany, where she will compete in the Frankfurt marathon. “I’m travelling and running with IMP runner Nadine Hunt, who I finished the New York Marathon with in 2011. “The Indigenous Marathon Project have been a great support in our preparation for Frankfurt,” Bianca said. “Since we made the decision to do another marathon Tim Rowe, IMP coach, has been sending me training programs for the marathon. They have also sent me some warm running gear for the cold Frankfurt weather.”
Free workshop for local sport and recreation clubs THE Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing is presenting a free workshop for local sport and recreation clubs. The one-day Building Acting Communities Workshop is hosted by the Weipa Town Authority and will cover the use of social media by sport and recreation clubs, sponsorship, marketing and grant applications, as well as discussing club committees and governance. The workshop will be facilitated by Steve Connelly of the CPR Group. Steve is a qualified workplace trainer and environmental planner, with a particular focus on finding solutions for sport and recreation organisations and local councils. WTA Sport and Recreation Coordinator Richelle Ryan said she would like to see at least one person from every sport and recreation club in the area attend the workshop. “This is an invaluable opportunity for local clubs to get some great advice on presenting grant applications as well as learning how to use social media effectively within your club members and others,” she said. The free workshop will be held at the Weipa Town Authority Council Chambers, Rocky Point, on Saturday, October 26 from 9.30am to 3pm, with lunch provided. Register your attendance by phoning WTA (4030 9400).

and they are taking the same lures as the Tuna. The Bully crew and Aedan went for a troll out the front on Sunday morning and landed a few Mackies. The first one in the boat wasn’t huge but it was Aedan’s first-ever Mackerel so he was pretty excited. Fishing along the beaches there are Trevally and Queenfish on the prowl taking lures and flies. Just out the front of the Waldron there are miles of small bait fish which has been bringing in queen fish Trevally and small Mackerel. The rivers have had some nice-sized Mud Crabs, with Andoom probably the pick, but the Hey and the Embley should be delivering these tasty morsels as well. With the Barra season closure now in place there are still some good fish in the rivers, primarily Grunter and Bream. Around the Mission River Bridge Blue Salmon are the go with some very big specimens amongst the captures, and Red Beach has had Grunter taking Prawns. I got caught out on Saturday when down on the Three Mile. I went to start the engine and nothing. I carry two extra batteries for my electric motor but it helps if you carry tools to undertake such a minor procedure and alas I didn’t. I was lucky that I had a quality pair of pliers that allowed me to get the nuts off so I could change the batteries. So, my tip for this week is to carry a basic set of tools to get you out of trouble and if a problem does arise keep a level, calm head and work through the problem until it is resolved. Until next week smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

WITH the Barra season now closed there haven’t been many reports coming in, but I have chased up a few. Fishing up around Duyfken Point area has been producing some good Tuskers with fish up to 75cm taking Squid and Prawns. There haven’t been to many Fingermark around however the ones that are coming to the boat have been crackers, with fish wings being the best bait as they stay on the hook longer than Prawns and Squid. The Billfish are still around with a couple of club boats finding a few during the week and Kristy Philliskirk had one that was only marginally bigger than the Garfish bait it was trying to eat. Mixed in with the Billies are some of the biggest Barracuda I’ve ever seen, they put up a good fight but aren’t any good for anything else. There are some very big Longtail Tuna kicking around the 20 metre mark and taking Laser Pro 190 with a mix of 2 metre and 7 metre deep models, colour not mattering much, but gold and sardine would be a good starting point. On the southern reefs there are lots of bait-stealing juvenile Tuskers and Spangled Emperor. Scott McCahon took a break in the Billfish comp to have some lunch and dropped a line to the bottom on one of his secret marks and landed a couple of stonker Reds. Up at Mapoon there have been some Tuskers taking baits on the close-in reefs with big Reds out in the deeper reefs. The Mackerel have slowed down a little bit but the size has improved

Club opened their doors to the Weipa children, who joined in on their sessions and had the opportunity to use some excellent equipment and facilities. The weather and competition in Cairns on the Saturday was hot with teams competing from Weipa, Cairns, Townsville, Ingham and Tully. T h e We i p a C r o c s placed third in their group cheer routine, looking the part as well in their new uniforms and shoes, which were purchased as the result of numerous fund raising activities and sponsorship from both Rio Tinto and
Weipa Bowls Club, who so often get behind community events and dig deep. Thank you also to the parents and committee members who helped plan and organise the trip. Feedback from a Sydneybased judge was extremely encouraging for the group and after experiencing the event and making new friends the team can’t wait for next year. The Weipa Crocs are looking for fit young men to come and join their cheerleading group. Anyone interested can contact Coach Tara on 0427 521 944. – Contributed
