A new era for search and rescue
SEARCH and rescue in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Torres Strait is about to enter a new era with the addition of high-tech assistance in the form of state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Vehicles more commonly referred to as drones. The president of Volunteer Marine Rescue Weipa, Crazy Pete, has secured funding from Marine Rescue Queensland to continue his research into the most suitable unit for the Gulf region. Crazy has convinced the State association that UAVs are the next big thing in almost every section of industry. ations with small remote-controlled units. The unit that is under investigation for VMR is a much larger aircraft. The unit has been in military operation since 2004 and has thousands of hours flying in all types of weather and conditions. “I have been meeting with staff from the Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation who are keen to assist us with our modifications to the aircraft,” Crazy said. “I have also met with members of the Australian and American armies who have been operating UAVs in Afghanistan and other countries for target acquisition tasks.”

Drones to become a part of search and rescue from page 1 “With the cost to replace a rescue vessel similar to Weipa’s Rescue One around $750,000, and a small fortune to fuel and maintain, anything that can reduce costs and keep crews to a minimum amount of time in harms way will always get a look in,” continued Crazy. The UAV will considerably reduce the time crews will need to spend scouring seas for hours on end, often in heavy weather before locating the vessel or persons in distress.

The manufacturer of the aircraft are keen to co-partner with Weipa VMR to assist in breaking the units into the public sector. Crazy recently represented Marine Rescue at conferences in Rostock Germany in September and a further one in London later that month. “I have been working very closely with Sgt Peter Blake from the Queensland Police Service who is investigating UAVs for use by Queensland Police,” he said.
They will revolutionise the way we do things here in the more remote parts of the country – Weipa VMR president, Crazy Pete
The unit is capable of cruising at a maximum height of five kilometres and a top speed of around 120kph and can stay aloft for up to three hours. Day and night vision cameras feed real time footage back to a receiver in Weipa. The UAV’s will not replace a vessel but will reduce the exposure of crews and vessels and greatly reduce operating costs.

Sgt Blake also attended the overseas conferences with Crazy and observed UAVs in operation by Scotland Yard in London and the FBI in America. “These units will be utilised not only for marine rescue tasks but I imagine they will be called upon to monitor bush fires in remote areas, customs and immigration activities, mining, land and sea ranger

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. WELL, us Queenslanders have not been able to hear ourselves think this week for the Smack of Firm Government. Oberführer Newman has lost patience with criminal bikies and has ended the problem completely. He did this by passing new laws declaring that a) anyone who wears a black leather jacket and rides a big motorcycle is a criminal unless they can prove otherwise and b) so are your mates, and c) no-one is listening, so don’t bother trying to convince us differently.

groups, SES, fisheries and a host of other tasks. “They will revolutionise the way we do things here in the more remote parts of the country.” Crazy said that although the Weipa unit was small in comparison to its counterparts on the east coast it has provided leadership for the organisation in several areas since its inception in Weipa in 1995. It is also noteworthy that Weipa is the most highlydecorated marine rescue unit in Queensland. It is most likely that the first UAVs to commence operations would be with VMR units in the Torres Strait which has the dubious title of being the busiest search and rescue area in Australia. “To establish four UAVs
Of course, a change like this is not easy to achieve. There will always be long-haired greenie-liberal-moochers who object when real men get things done. Well, the Oberführer does not care. He has taken the advice of no less a person than the Attorney-General, and he says everything is totally correct. To draft the new laws, he used all the experience he remembers from his two months work experience in a Gold Coast conveyancing office, and he is confident they will stand up in court. The Oberführer also enlisted the support of Professor Eisenkopf of Brisbane University’s Faculty of Jurisprudence who says, “The new laws are firmly grounded in the roots of English Common Law dating back to the time of King Alfred. They apply the ancient principle of qui dicis which is still at the heart of today’s legal framework. The criminal constraint

and train crews to “pilot” level would come at a cost of $4 million,” Crazy said. “When you consider that one helicopter can run up numbers like that in no time at all, then you add in the cost of other assets such as rescue vessels, fixed-wing aircraft, training of crews, water police, pilots etc. it is a one off bargain.” “There are challenges in positioning these aircraft into the Civil Aviation Safety Authorities legislation although once the emergency services get the go ahead we are hopeful the programme will begin as soon as practicable. “It will mean faster response times in getting searches underway and much faster times reaching the target than by vessel,” he concluded.
of contumeliosa bulla will apply if anyone is silly enough to contradict the boss.” Now the Oberführer has the legal bit between his teeth, he expects to release new regulations protecting the bosses of workers injured on the job. At the core of the new system will be the “It Was Just A Little Bit” defence created to stop workers suing in ridiculous cases, for instance when they have just been knocked about a bit by their machinery or perhaps lost some insignificant and non-essential part like a finger or two. He has also eased the burden on managers whose workers were caught doing illegal things, like driving their trucks for over-long hours. There used to be a penalty of a whole $3800 per incident but that has been cut to $100, a much more manageable amount. I suppose the smack of firm government can be a little more gentle in some cases.

WHAT’S ON...
Brad ready to meet new challenges By Giembra Busmer
THERE is a new man at the helm of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Community Relations department and he is ready to take on any challenges the position may throw at him. Brad Welsh has joined the Weipa operation from a RTA North Parkes mining operation where he was in charge of community relations for the company’s underground copper mine. Prior to this position Brad worked in politics, firstly as a media advisor to Kevin Rudd in Canberra, and then as a policy adviser to NSW Premier Kristina Keneally. Educationally Brad’s experiences are widely varied with a degree in Welfare majoring in Aboriginal Community Studies, a Law degree and a third degree which he will graduate from in November, a Masters in Mining Engineering. Born and bred in Redfern, NSW the self-confessed Rabbi-
tohs tragic said the opportunity to come to a Rio Tinto signature operation was too good to miss. “The chance for me to lead one of most-renowned community teams on the planet was one I couldn’t pass up,” Brad told the Western Cape Bulletin. “It’s also an opportunity for me to understand a different product group, lead a bigger team and meet some significant challenges presented by dealing with three different agreements, the Weipa Town Authority and the Weipa community. “It’s the challenge of this complexity that I’m really looking forward to.” Brad said he is also looking forward to becoming a part of the Weipa community. “I’ve known people who have worked in Weipa and everyone I spoke to told me I would love working and living here,” he said. “I was presented with the opportunity to work at what is a great operation, and one that you can get really significant

professional challenges from, but also the chance to live in an awesome town that does every kind of sport you can think of and has a real ‘can do’ attitude.” Brad’s partner and three daughters (aged five, nine and 10 years) will be joining him at the end of the 2013 school year and he said the family was looking forward to the move.
“They’re big seafood eaters, and there’s not a lot of seafood in Parkes so they can’t wait to get here and go fishing and crabbing,” Brad said. “My daughters are very sporting, enjoying netball, touch footy and hockey so they can’t wait to get here and become part of the Weipa community.”
Donation brightens Aged Care Facility sitting room THE sitting room of the Weipa Integrated Health Services Aged Care Facility is looking a lot brighter thanks to a kind donation by a local artist. Staff from the facility recently made an appeal on social media for ideas to ‘cheer-up’ the area and artist Una Miller was only too happy to help. Una kindly donated one of her original paintings which has brightened up the room considerably. Aged Care Clinical Nurse Wendi Walker said their were plans in place to add a bookshelf to the room and offers of books and ornaments to fill the shelves had already been received. The Friends of the Foundation will be connected to the FNQ Foundation based in Cairns and it is hoped the Weipa-based unit will support the health services and community, to fundraise and support service development, help with developing a pool of projects for the Weipa facility and establish a pool of volunteers to support services including residential aged care. An exhibition of photos taken by Pormpuraaw women was launched at the Pormpuraaw United Brothers Sports Club last week. The photos were taken as part of the Apunipima Cape York Health Council Photovoice project which saw women document their lives, stories and ideas through photography. The women were given digital cameras, taught to use them and then encouraged to go out and take photos. The event featured the women’s photos and a short film depicting their experience of the Photovoice project. Photovoice Coordinator Fiona Millard says the project was all about building local capacity.
“This has been a tremendous project - not only has it been loads of fun but the Pormpuraaw women have learned new skills, worked as a team and put together a phenomenal exhibition.” “The images depict nature, people, and places – all the things these women find meaningful. We have taken these images and made an exhibition so the women can see how one small act – the taking of a photo – can lead to bigger things. “They have learned so much – from learning how to use a camera to staging an exhibition.” “A punipima s ees capacity building as a vital part of good health and this project focused on this from the start,” Fiona said.

Celebrating the future of music IMAGINE an Australia without Nick Cave, Angus Young, Kylie Minogue or Harrison Craig. Music and musicians play a huge part in Australia’s culture. But where does this start? Fostering a love of music through learning, playing and listening in the hearts and minds of young Australians is crucial to Australia’s musical future and indeed our culture, and Western Cape College will be playing their part next week when students participate in a nationwide simultaneous sing-along. Music: Count Us In is Australia’s largest school music advocacy and participation program, growing steadily in reach and impact since 2007 and will be held this year on Thursday, October 31 at 12.30pm EDST when over half a million school students across Australia, from Kindergarten to Year 12, will sing the same song at the same time This year’s ‘song that stops the nation’ has a great pedigree. Titled Keep On, the song was penned by four talented students who were mentored by singer songwriter Katie Noonan, who said: “I am a

AquArium enthusiasts are being urged to take care when collecting or buying fish for their aquarium. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officer Philippa Newton said QBFP have noted an increase in the number of recreational fishers catching illegal fish for their aquariums. “All regulated fish must comply with size and possession limits regardless of whether they are kept for consumption or to keep in an aquarium,” she said. “Some fish, such as declared noxious fish and no-take species, cannot be taken and kept in aquariums. “There are restrictions on the types of recreational fishing gear that can be used when collecting fish from tidal waters for aquariums. “The most popular gear to use is a scoop net, which must not exceed 2m in any dimension, have a handle not longer than 2.5m and a minimum 25mm mesh size. “It’s also important to remember that you cannot collect aquarium fish to sell unless you have the appropriate licence.

“Collecting aquarium fish to sell without the appropriate licence could land you an $1100 onthe-spot fine or a maximum penalty of $110,000.” Ms Newton warned aquarium enthusiasts to also take care when purchasing aquarium fish, especially through online classifieds. “People need to ensure the fish they purchase for their tank is legal. “If buying a fish, check if the species is regulated and whether it has a size limit. If a size limit applies, ensure the fish meets the requirements. “Always request a receipt to assist in identifying the source and legitimate sale of the fish. “A $220 on-the-spot fine or a maximum penalty of $110,000 applies to people found in possession of an undersize fish.” “If anyone suspects that fish is being sold illegally, for example an undersize fish from Queensland waters or a noxious fish, report it immediately to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116. For more information on size and possession limits or collecting fish for aquariums, visit www. fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General Manager Operations Gareth Manderson said he is looking forward to updating the community about site activities, and also infrastructure projects that
are either under way or upcoming. “We will explain the focus areas for the operation, and also provide an update on what works are happening around town – including power, housing and the water system delivery upgrade,” Mr Manderson said. “These forums are the perfect opportunity to hear from residents first-hand.” More than 85 residents have attended the previous
two community forums in 2013. For catering purposes, please register your attendance by phoning the freecall feedback hotline (1800 707 633) or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa has released its Sustainable Development Report for last year, available online at www.riotintoalcan.com under ‘Reports and publications’.

New study finds cancer a significant burden on the Indigenous population Indigenous Australians are at greater risk of receiving a cancer diagnosis and 50 per cent more likely to die from cancer than non-Indigenous Australians, a new report has found. The study, released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and Cancer Australia earlier this month, shows Indigenous cancer patients have higher rates of new cancer cases and cancer deaths than non-Indigenous Australians. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the report highlighted the urgent need for closer collaboration between health agencies and Indigenous communities. “This study highlights the significant burden of cancer on the Indigenous population,” Ms Clift said. “There is an almost 50 per cent difference in cancer survival for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Queenslanders in the first year after diagnosis. “Culturally appropriate preventive strategies, developed through partnership and collaboration with Indigenous people, are key to reducing cancer incidence/risk.” “Early diagnosis and effective treatment are essential to improve cancer survival rates.” Ms Clift said cultural barriers could be overcome, through consultation.
“Cancer Council Queensland has worked with Indigenous health workers and community members over many years to develop resources and programs that are effective in helping Indigenous Queenslanders reduce their cancer risks. “The booklet, Wanem Morphine, published in Creole by Cancer Council Queensland, was the first resource of its kind to help Indigenous Queenslanders understand the use of morphine for pain relief in cancer treatment. “The booklet was developed with significant input from the Indigenous community and demonstrates an appreciation of the uniqueness of Indigenous culture.” Cancer is the leading cause of preventable death among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Queensland. Research shows tobacco smoking causes almost 32 per cent of the cancer burden for Indigenous Queenslanders. Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer, and leading cause of cancer death, for Indigenous Australians. Cancer Council Queensland provides information and support to all Queenslanders living with cancer. More information about Cancer Council Queensland and the booklet Wanem Morphine is available at www. cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20.

Cape York councils secure funding for key projects TWO councils in Cape York have secured more than $1 million funding under the Queensland Government’s Royalties for the Regions program. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council and Aurukun Shire Council will receive the money to help fund critical infrastructure upgrades. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council will receive $1.11 million for the $1.16 million Napranum industrial/commercial precinct ring road and Aurukun Shire Council will receive $378,720 for the $574,720 sealing of the Barge Landing to Airport Road. “Building a ring road and bitumen sealing a truck turning area
will set the Napranum industrial precinct up for a bright future,” Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said. The Aurukun project will upgrade 1.2 kilometres of the road with gravel pavement and a double coat bitumen chip seal, fixing dust and air quality issues for the community. “This road has had increased heavy vehicle use due to traffic servicing the significant infrastructure and building development happening in Aurukun as the town prepares for the South of Embley bauxite mine. “Royalties for the Regions has ensured that, for the first time, a
share of the royalties generated in regional areas is given back to communities in those areas to mitigate the impacts of resource activities and to improve local amenities and services,” Mr Seeney said. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council and Aurukun Shire Council will now have to submit a detailed business case for the projects to have the funding confirmed by the end of the year. Royalties for the Regions will invest $495 million over the four years to 2015-16 in critical regional community infrastructure, roads and flood mitigation projects.

Economic report shows Queensland in front THE latest CommSec State of the States Report again shows why Queensland is the best place in Australia to invest, employ and grow your business. Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the report, released this week, noted improvements in business investment, unemployment, housing finance and building starts as positive signs for Queensland. “Queensland now leads the nation in business investment, with spending in the June quarter 37 per cent above the decade average,” Mr Nicholls said. Mr Nicholls said Queensland was ranked the second-best performing state on four of the eight
economic indicators used in the CommSec report. “Economic growth is 19.3 per cent higher than the decade average, retail spending is up 15.3 per cent and construction activity is 45 per cent higher than it was 10 years ago,” he said. “Importantly, Queensland continues to experience population growth above the national average. “This is solid news, as population growth bolsters the labour force and creates greater demand across all sectors, especially retail and housing.” Mr Nicholls said the State of the States Report was the latest in a string of positive economic
releases for Queensland. “The Deloitte Business Outlook, also released this week, notes that Queensland continues to out-perform the national economy,” he said. “Preliminary results from the State Accounts show Queensland’s economy growing by four per cent in 2012-13, compared to an average of 2.6 per cent across the other states. “By 2014-15 Queensland will have the fastest growing economy of any Australian state. “With these positive signs emerging there’s never been a better time for businesses to invest, employ and grow in Queensland.”
Future first homebuyers an ambitious bunch WHILE 83 per cent of first homebuyers say they are prepared to sacrifice aspects of their lifestyle in order to get onto the property ladder, the majority only plan to save for an average of one to two years before buying, according to the 2013 Mortgage Choice Future First Homebuyer Survey. The annual study of more than 1,000 Australians revealed that despite rising property prices, one in four future first home buyers are still only saving an average of 10 per cent of their monthly income after tax-similar to 2012 when property prices were on average 8.7 per cent lower.* Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said it is surprising to see homebuyers aren’t saving more, especially given the survey also found that more buyers are concerned by rising prices this year at 29 per cent compared to 22 per cent in 2012. “If Australians are serious about getting on the property ladder, they need to knuckle down and start saving a deposit sooner rather than later,” Ms Darnbrough said. “Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to cut out all of life’s little luxuries. If you put a savings plan in place and set realistic, achievable goals, you should
be on your way to home ownership in no time!” According to the research, 60 per cent of future first home buyers would be willing to miss out on a holiday if it meant they could get on the property ladder sooner. In addition, 24 per cent of respondents said they are happy to delay having children, 19.4 per cent said they would move back in/ stay living with parents or in-laws in order to save on rent and 8 per cent said they are willing to move to cheaper share accommodation. When it comes to concerns around buying a home, 48 per cent of respondents said they are anxious about the length of time it will take to pay off the mortgage, while 47 per cent worry about not being able to afford the repayments - up from 44 per cent and 46 per cent in 2012 respectively. “Making sure you get the right home loan for you and your needs is extremely important. A mortgage broker can do the leg work for you by thoroughly researching the market, helping you get the most suitable loan for your circumstances,” said Ms Darnbrough.
“The combination of historically low rates and competitive offerings from Australia’s lenders is extremely appealing for anyone considering purchasing property in the near future. By looking at your purchasing options now, you may be able to get ahead of the speculative rising property prices, and secure a good deal.” *Statistic sourced from RP Data The Mortgage Choice 2013 Future First Homebuyer/Recent First Homeowner Survey of 1,000 Australians who were looking to purchase their first home in the next two years or who bought their first home in the last two years ran online in September 2013. The eyes of the two followers of Jesus were opened when Jesus broke the bread and for the first time they recognised that the ignorant stranger (Luke Ch 24 v 18-19a) that they invited home was their Lord. Could that have been the first Holy Communion since the Lord’s resurrection even though there was no wine involved? We now come to Mark Ch 16 verses 9-20 and you will notice that the reporting of the Lord’s appearances after his resurrection were not given out in as much detail as the other gospels. This is because Mark was satisfied to leave his report finishing at 16 v 8, but other Christians of that time thought that it should end off with at least some more info. So they wrote their own endings to Mark’s gospel to give it a more detailed finish in line with the other gospel writings. Although these verses are late add-ons and not part of the Scriptures, as long as they agree with the
By Rev. Michael Connolly
Scriptures, they can still be taken as valuable pictures of the early church’s thinking. Read Mark Ch 16 vs 14-18; Most of these verses are similar to the other gospels, except the first half of verse 18; “If they pick up snakes or drink any poison, they will not be harmed.” We will discuss that verse and others next week. The Lord be with you. STaying at their house on the road to emmaus the Lord set his two followers right by explaining that he was indeed the Messiah but the suffering servant Messiah who was to suffer and die, not a warrior/king Messiah as they thought, (v 26). He then gave them a full explanation of God’s plan of salvation. When the Lord broke the bread and gave it to them, it was only then that their eyes were opened and they realised that they were walking and talking with Jesus all that time. Mark Ch 16 has other stories attached to Mark’s
own writing, given by Christian writers who thought that there should be a better ending to his writings. Most have similar stories to the other gospels except for the first half of verse 18, which says that if believers pick up snakes or drink any poison they will not be harmed. Now I’d be very careful in taking these verses literally, because we could be putting the Lord God to the test. Situations in which people like Paul who were on a very important mission for God are an exception, because they did not try to show off God’s power and God protected them. (Read Acts Ch 28 vs 1-6). Not like this Christian sect in the United States. They round up poisonous snakes like rattle snakes and dance with them and kiss them and handle them like they were invincible, (can’t be killed), and all in the name of the Lord. I wouldn’t copy them! The Lord is good. Rev Michael Connolly

ily won the final of the Cairns Allblacks carnival held at Barlow Park on the weekend beating Samu Balas 52-6. You can ‘feel the rush’ and win a drive in a dirt kart at the Weipa Dirt Karts final race meeting.
WE all know that in Weipa this time of year brings about change. That oppressive heat before the rain always tells us it’s time to pack away the tents and swags and start dusting of the boat for fishing time. It also signals the end of the 2013 Weipa dirt karting season; one that will be etched into the history books for the running of the Inaugural Queensland Dirt kart Title. But let me tell you, it’s not quite time to drop to your knees and start crying like a baby. The Weipa Dirt Club has a few race meetings left and an opportunity to win a ride in a dirt kart. That’s right – you can win a ride in a dirt kart. Over the next three race meetings, if you come out to the track and buy something from the canteen you’ll receive a ticket in the draw to drive a dirt kart. We have a ride in a dirt kart to win for one boy and one girl under 14 years of age, and also a one male and one female to win. That’s four rides up for grabs, so it’s time for you to feel the rush of dirt karting and get sideways in the dirt. Winners will be announced on November 16 and they will take the ride of their lives on November 23
at the 2013 Weipa Dirt Karts 22 Lap Classic meeting, the final race meeting of the year. So come on kids, tell mum and dad to take you out on Saturday night instead of staying at home, the race meetings to get your tickets at are on October 26, November 9 and November 16. Back to the racing . . . it was frantic again on Saturday night with 28 karters turning up to battle it out. Rachel Brooker returned from her three-month dirt kart holiday to take out all junior races for the night. There were four different winners in both the KT Mediums and KT Heavies on the night and Howard Waretini returned to the winner’s circle in the 125cc karts. With only three race meetings left in the club championship, the drivers are starting to take more risks and chances, and obviously making more mistakes, but the racing is close that’s for sure. This Saturday night it’s on again. Racing starts at 7pm, it’s free to get in and don’t forget you need to come out and buy something from the canteen to get your ticket to win a ‘Drive in Dirt Kart’. – Mowlesy

WE are now over the halfway mark of season two of 2013 and grand final preparations are well underway. A grand final date will be released after the next committee meeting next week. There was an epic battle on court two between Robyn Hill and Dean Dalgliesh on Thursday night. It quickly became a battle of Dean’s powerfully aggressive shots against Robyn’s softer yet subtly sneaky corner plays. The score (Robyn v Dean) 2-9 3-9 9-4 9-4 2-9 does not accurately represent how close the game was at times. The game took an exciting twist in the third set when Robyn was able to smash out a consistent
serving game to take out the set 9-4. Robyn took out the next set 9-4. The fifth and final set became a battle of the wills but ended in victory to Dean in a 2-9 result. There was another exciting game on Thursday night on court one, with two beginner players Ashleigh May and Rachel Dumbleton duelling it out in a four-set game. The coaching skills of both ladies’ husbands (Chris May - B1 and Jay Dumbleton - A1) was on display. This is the first season both Ashleigh and Rachel have played squash and it is testament to them both how close the game was a how it was such a quality game. The last set quickly became a quasi-tennis match with consecutive hand-outs, but Rachel was able to hold serve to clinch the match with a 8-9 set. Congratulations, girls! Rachel took out the game with a 0-0 7-9 9-0 8-9 score. See you at the courts! – Weipa Squash Committee
Licensees and friends enjoy touch footy games LOCAL licensees and their mates got together for a couple of fun-filled touch footy games at the Andoom Oval recently. In the first game the Bowls Club team pitted their skills against a combined team, which consisted of staff and friends from the Albatross Bay Resort, Carpentaria Golf Club and Weipa Police, with the Bowls Club taking the honours 7-5. The second game was a Bledisloe game with the Kiwis taking on the Aussies and the Aussies were triumphant 12-3.
WIN A RIDE IN A DIRT KART! and what a top effort that was. In the rivers the fishing has been excellent with mixed bags coming in. In the upper reaches of the Hey River around the rock bars Mick Dacey and crew caught Fingermark, Cod and Grunter. I also had a mixed bag with Blue Salmon, Flathead, Fingermark, Bream and Barracuda. Darren on the Tackleworld boat has been getting good Grunter and Fingermark but he won’t say exactly where. The Mission River bridge has Queenfish, Blue Salmon, Bream and some big Sharks. There is plenty of live bait at the bridge but

BEFORE I go into this week’s report I have had my faith in humanity restored by a un-named gentleman who returned my wallet that unbeknown to me had fallen out of the boat on the way home from the boat ramp. I was unaware that the box my wallet was in had blown out of the boat until this good Samaritan turned up at my place with the wayward box. He would not take a reward and as quickly as he came he was gone - whoever you are, thank you very much as replacing cards can be a nightmare. On the fishing front things have slowed down a bit but there are fish about if you are prepared to chase them. The winds keep coming up about mid-morning so if you get out to your marks early you can get a good feed and get home when the winds start to pick up. There are a lot of juvenile fish about so take care when you release them, but in amongst the small fish are some good Tuskers, Fingermark, Cod and Nannygai. Some good places to try would be the Three Mile and out around the leads. I find that when trolling for Mackerel I keep an eye on the sounder for any reef structure and mark these spots to try in the future, or if there are fish showing on the screen give it a go straight away. If they’re rubbish then delete the mark and move on ‘til you find some more reefs. There are still Mackerel about so run a mix of deep divers and shallow runners ‘til you work out a feeding pattern, then stick to it. In the shallows at Duyfken Point there are Tuskers to be had, but pick your weather when going up here as the conditions can change very quickly. END OF SEASON: Weipa Junior Cricket Club members enjoyed one last hit-out for the 2013 season prior to a barbecue lunch and the presentation of awards.
IT was a morning of catches, run outs, cover drives, hook shots and cuts on the local cricket pitch for the 2013 Weipa Junior Cricket Club break-up. The day began with two cricket games for the junior members. The younger crew had an exciting match alongside their siblings, with a strong showing from the girls. The boys weren’t to be outdone with enthusiastic dives to catch and run-out the opposition. The older members played a game which included their parents. The game showcased the

children’s skills, and saw some great catches in the outfield, quality bowling and attacking batting from all involved. The parents were also keen to take the field and I’m sure there would have been some sore bodies the next day. It has been an enjoyable season, with Aaron Johnson and Steve Lugsdin sharing their knowledge and skills of the game with the children every Wednesday. It was great to see the children eager and keen each week to develop and nurture their skills and sportsmanship and
learn the rules of cricket. A big thank you to Steve and Aaron for all their time and effort throughout the season, it was greatly appreciated. The morning of cricket ended with a barbecue and the
presentation of awards. Each member was presented with a shirt from the Club and Weipa Furniture & Electrical kindly donated a pair of headphones and a mini-speaker to each – Contributed player.
