Goodline staff are in the pink! DON’T be surprised if you start seeing pink work shirts aplenty in Weipa as Goodline staff get behind a company fundraiser. Goodline executive manager Catherine Kennedy told the Bully the company has adopted the “in the pink” theme as a fundraising exercise for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. “We have had a number of employees diagnosed with breast cancer in our Queensland and Western Australian branches, and although the company supports these employees we thought it would be a good idea to do a bit of fundraising for breast cancer research,” Mrs Kennedy said. The company ordered not only pink shirts but also pink boots and hard hats which are available for staff to purchase, with a percentage of the purchase price going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Mrs Kenned y said the company is planning further fundraising for other causes, including prostate cancer. “We will be having a ‘moustache day’ were the girls will have to wear moustaches to show their support for men’s cancers – it’s only fair if the boys have to wear pink shirts!”

Weipa Town Authority chairman resigns THE elected chairman of the Weipa Town Authority, Peter McCulkin has resigned his position. Mr McCulkin was elected to the position by one vote over fellow candidate Ian McNamara in the local government election held on April 28, 2012. A vote of no confidence in Mr McCulkin was passed at the last regular WTA meeting on October 25, 2013 and Mr McCulkin’s resignation was offered and accepted on Friday, November 8. Current Deputy Chair Stretch Noonan, who will be acting in all official duties on behalf of the WTA until new elections are held, said Mr McCulkin’s resignation was not expected to have any impacts on the town or services. “The resignation has been offered and accepted and I will be filling the position in the interim. We wish Peter well in his future endeavours and are looking forward to getting on with the important work the WTA does in the community,” Mr Noonan said. “It is important to focus on the path forward for the WTA and the Weipa community.” There has been speculation that Mr McCulkin’s decision was related to comments he made on the ABC Radio National breakfast program on September 3, 2013 regarding Mr Noel Pearson, however Mr Noonan was unable to make comment. “It is important that we do not speculate on this or any other matter,” he said. Mr McCulkin had not responded by time of press to a request by the Western Cape Bulletin to comment on his resignation. New elections for the position of WTA chairperson will be arranged as soon as practicable and are expected on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

Last year, Ms Newman was one of nine ear health workers to receive a $10,000, year-long bursary to complete a Diploma in Training and Assessor in Ear Health through the NACCHO Ear and Hearing Training for the Aboriginal Health Worker Workforce Project. “I was very happy to win the scholarship as I have a passion for hearing health,” Ms Newman said. “I understand the impact that a hearing impairment can have on children and families because I suffer from a hearing condition myself. “It’s been a dream for me to help communities with their ear health.” Ms Newman said studying for her diploma had been intense over the past year. “I’ve travelled all over the Australia for presentations, training and assessments,’’ she said. Ms Newman will graduate in November and will be qualified as a National Accredited Trainer for Ear/Hearing Health.

CAPE York communities are benefitting from improved ear health services as a result of the purchase of $85,000 of new equipment earlier this year. Cape York Hospital and Health Service (HHS) Ear Health Coordinator Denise Newman said 12 new sets of tympanometers and audiometers had been purchased to help diagnose hearing problems. She said the new equipment was now being used in each of the 12 remote communities on the Cape. “These units are excellent. They are user-friendly, good for travelling in light planes and sturdy for school visits,” Denise said. “They have allowed us to offer an improved and more efficient service to Cape York residents.’’ Ms Newman said she enjoyed her role of coordinating and facilitating ear health activities throughout the Cape. “I work with clinical services, health promotion and policy and I also work closely with Apunipima Cape York Health Council,” she said.

Billy Gordon to run for Cook By Aaron Smith
BILLY Gordon will run for the seat of Cook in the next State election, Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced in Cairns. “Billy will do something the current Member for Cook, David Kempton, and the government he represents have failed to do - listen to locals and offer strong representation on their behalf,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “Mr Kempton has been missing in action from his electorate unavailable, not engaged and just not turning up. “At the same time he has been happy to sit back and support a government that is determined to take Queensland back 25 years.” Current MP for Cook David Kempton said: “I will not respond to personal attacks, I am simply getting on with the job of representing the people in my vast electorate. “I will be more than happy to stand on my record on Election Day.” Mr Gordon turns to the State scene after at unsuccessful bid to win the seat of Leichhardt in September’s Federal election from long-serving Liberal Warren Entsch. However, the Labor candidate made in-roads into Mr Entsch’s popularity with swings of six to 35 per cent throughout Cape York. That swing was contrary to the nation-wide movement to an LNP Government. Mr Gordon grew up and worked in North Queensland. He has worked on sugar-

cane and banana farms, in construction and as a barman and spent many years working with TAFE throughout the Far North, supporting students in the Torres Strait, Cape York and Cairns. He has also been a reservist with the Far North’s 51st Battalion, worked for the Foundation for Young Australians and Reconciliation Australia and most recently was the Community Development Manager with Skytrans. “I cannot sit by while this MP ignores his electorate and, while the LNP government he represents, focuses solely on slashing jobs and removing front-line services,” Mr Gordon said. “As a father of five I’m determined that every child has the opportunity for not only a better education but the chance to get a decent job at the end of it. “People in the Far North deserve an MP who will fight for better schools and fight for their local hospital and health services. “I’m going to hit the ground running, I’m ready to listen and I’m determined to work hard and bring fresh ideas to the table.”

COMMUNITY members of the Far North have been getting behind our police district and nominating officers to win the Far North District (FND) Police Officer of the Year award ,and this month’s winner is Constable Karina Pols from the Pormpuraaw Station. Nominations received are assessed by the Rotary Club of Cairns and winners announced each month. Rotary Club of Cairns president, Gail Seymour said the Police Officer of the Year Award received a number of exceptional nominations again this month. “It is great to see the awards being embraced across the District, with nominations received from as far afield as Horn Island. “The choice of a winner each month is not easy for our judging panel due to the continual high standard of nominations. “Our winner this month has been described in the nomination as an asset to the community with a very calming, approachable and understanding attitude. “Karina demonstrates the

qualities of service above self, community engagement and upholding good policing values,” Ms Seymour said. Constable Pols joined the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in 2009 and has been stationed at the Gold Coast, Cairns and was transferred to Pormpuraaw in May this year. “I enjoy working in our remote community because you get to work on jobs from start to finish,” Constable Pols said. “It’s very satisfying when you get to be involved in the entire process from the initial report, investigation, gathering evidence, arrest and court process.” Karina hopes to one day head to the Water Police and is also contemplating a career in the Criminal Investigation Branch, but for the time being she is happy to continue working in the Cape area and is excited about gaining more experience working with the Indigenous communities. “I love working in my community because the locals understand that I am only learning about their culture and traditions.
“They take great pride in explaining their way of life which certainly helps me to understand their lifestyle and ultimately makes my job easier too. “ We have the most beautiful sunsets and gorgeous beach which has a plentiful supply of fresh fish and mud crabs which is always an added bonus.” When asked about some of her more unique jobs she’s had with the police thus far, she cited an incident where she and her partner were called to check on the welfare of a resident in Cairns who hadn’t been seen by neighbours for sometime. It was night time, raining and the house was in complete darkness. They thought they were looking for someone deceased and the house was locked up tight. They forced entry and cleared the house. All was going well until the pet bird sitting in an upstairs room called out to the officers and they nearly died of fright. Thankfully the owner arrived home a short time later, caught them in her house and when they explained the situation they all had a good laugh.
When asked what she thought other people thought about her Karina said, “Some may think I’m a typical blonde. Because our job is quite stressful at times, I do like to have a laugh and a joke, so I am quite fun and bubbly.” Constable Pols recently helped organise the Pormpuraaw Water Safety Day which included talks about life jackets, EPIRB’s, First Aid, swimming safe rules as well as the emergency grab bag launch (received from Aurukun Station). They had a large slip’n’slide, wet jumping castle, Kup Murri, and a massive water bomb fi ght which the kids had a ball with. Their aim was pretty good as both Karina and Sergeant Cochran managed to wear a few direct hits from the water bombs. The Police set up a Water Police vessel display and 19 locals managed to get their boat licences thanks to Weipa Boating and Fisheries. The event finished off with a with a blue light disco which was a huge success.

The rationale for this workshop is to provide an insight into how to communicate across the employer-employee gap and ultimately how to keep those employees in the workplace. “People said that they got a lot out of the day and in particular, ways and means of understanding the challenges in everyday worklife that Indigenous people face,” commented Liz Logan,

They will be remembered ALMOST a century after the guns fell silent on the Western Front in WW1, Queenslanders took a collective moment on Monday, November 11 to remember the sacrifices made by service personnel in conflicts past and present.
Around 50 people attended the Weipa Remembrance Day Ceremony, held at the Town Memorial pausing for a minute’s silence to reflect on the declaration of the Armistice to end the ‘War to End All Wars’ in November 1918.

Energy and Water Ombudsman reaches out to Indigenous community THE Energy and Wa t e r O m b u d s m a n Queensland is aiming to increase awareness of the office and strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in 2014. “We receive very few complaints from Indigenous Queenslanders and we aim to assist Indigenous people to be confident and informed consumers, and ensure they are aware of their right to assistance with issues relating to their electricity services,” said Energy and Water Ombudsman Forbes Smith. As part of this commitment, EWOQ is looking to recruit an Indigenous Investigation Conciliation and Outreach Officer. Based in Cairns, the officer will investigate complaints and liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and representative bodies concerning electricity issues and EWOQ’s dispute resolution function. “EWOQ will work closely with Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people and their organisations and businesses in urban, rural and remote areas and will raise awareness about issues affecting Indigenous people across the state,” said Mr Smith. “We want to ensure that we are as accessible as we can possibly be to all Queenslanders, including those living in regional communities. “The introduction of an Indigenous Investigation Conciliation and Outreach Officer will provide an opportunity for the local community to speak directly with a designated liaison officer who can assist with complaints and provide general assistance,” said Mr Smith. Indigenous Queenslander ’s interested in applying for the role of Indigenous Investigation Conciliation and Outreach Officer can review the position description available from the Queensland Government Smart Jobs website. Applications close November 25, 2013.

Strong voice for the Wenlock River
The final countdown to digital-only TV has begun! The Wenlock River. Photo courtesy Cape York NRM.
MORE than 40 people congregated at Moreton Telegraph Station in mid-October to show their commitment to the formation of the Wenlock River Catchment Group. Traditional Owners from the lower, middle and upper reaches of the river, together with pastoralists, conservation groups and tourism unanimously agreed to the importance of providing a collective voice for the river, by forming the group. Meeting chairperson Barry Lyon said the Wenlock River Catchment Group is a combined set of landholders who are passionately committed to managing the catchment and its cultural and natural values into the future. “The roll-up for the meeting shows just how committed people are to looking after the river” he said. Kathleen Wilson, senior Traditional Owner for the Peppan Land Trust attended the two day meeting for her father George Wilson, who is a senior Elder for Northern Kaanju. “I am very happy that this meeting is happening” she said. “ We need healthy water for our future generations. We need caring and sharing for Country.” Edwin Ling, a ranger from Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers, is also a Traditional Custodian for a lower part of the Wenlock River. He said the catchment group formation was important to keep the river and surrounding country safe and clean for the animals who live there. “I’m worried about how development will impact downstream” he said. “I’d like this group to stop any mining on the Wenlock, and also to strengthen the patrolling work of the Rangers.” “It’s future is our future” the young Mapoon rangers agreed. The catchment group will have representation from Traditional Owners, Conservation, Pastoral, Local Government and Tourism groups who live in the Wenlock catchment area, with associate membership from others with an interest in the river system. “We recognise that interests are diverse” said Barry, “but everyone here is committed to making sure that what people value about the river is protected, maintained and enhanced for future generations.” Attendees are now meeting back with their communities to discuss how each individual group wants to be represented within the Catchment Group.
Areas of remote central and eastern Australia switch on 10 December 2013* The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.
What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box, or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner; or • a satellite TV system. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas, satellite dishes and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your satellite dish or antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.
Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Cheeky Cooktown crocodile Cooktown has experienced an alarming number of crocodile sightings recently. Since the start of November, the Queensland Parks & Wildlife crew have caught and sent away two crocodiles to Edward River Croc Farm (Pormpuraaw) - one 2.7m on November 2 and one 3.7m on November 7. They have reset the trap to try and catch one4m alpha male and one 2.4m that is pictured in the photograph below. A Council staff member (Patrick Wilson) took the photo during his lunch break on November 7 in what almost seems like a staged moment, underneath a warning sign on the Cooktown waterfront.
Group charged over Aurukun property crime spree TWO boys aged 13 and 15, another two aged 16, and two men aged 18 and 20 have been charged following investigations into a raft of property offences allegedly committed in Aurukun earlier this month. Weipa Detectives travelled to the community to assist local Police following a number of break-in incidents as well as vehicle thefts and property damage. The six were charged with a total of 20 offences including breaking and entering premises, unlawful use of motor vehicles, wilful damage and assault. The 18 and 20-year-old men were due to appear in the Aurukun Magistrates Court on November 6 and on November 18 respectively. The youths will be dealt with under the provisions of The Youth Justice Act 1992. Investigations into the incidents are continuing.
Serious assault Police, Aurukun A 21-YEAR-OLD Aurukun man was charged on Thursday, November 7 following the alleged assault of a Police Officer on November 6. The man was in custody at the Aurukun watchhouse in relation to other matters when he allegedly punched the officer in the face at around 6pm. The 30-year-old male officer required medical treatment for a facial cut as a result of the incident. The man was charged with serious assault of police and wilful damage of police property. He was scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on November 8.

Lockhart locals invited to have their say on split DAVID Kempton, Member for Cook, is inviting Lockhart locals to have their say on proposed changes that would see the locality of Lockhart split into two parts, with both to adopt a new name. Mr Kempton said a local resident had put forward a proposal to rename part of Lockhart as ‘Iron Range’. “This suggestion was submitted in an attempt to eliminate the problem emergency and other essential services were having in confusing Lockhart property addresses with others in the existing Lockhart River area,” Mr Kempton. “In response, the Department of Natural Resources and Mines has developed a proposal to rename the remaining portion of Lockhart as Lockhart River.” Mr Kempton said
the proposal had already received key support, but the idea was now open to feedback from all members of the community. “The proposal has already received support from the Cook Shire Council and the Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council,” he said. “A nod of approval has also been given by the Northern Kuuku Ya’a Kanthanampu Aboriginal Council Corporation RNTBC Land Trust, which represents the traditional owners of the land within the proposed Iron Range locality. “The greater Lockhart community now has the opportunity to put forward a submission on the proposal before January 3, 2014, and I urge everyone affected to make their voices heard.

Stop using ‘illegal’ label: 138 groups appeal to PM A TOTAL of 138 Australian organisations have appealed to Prime Minister Tony Abbott asking him to stop the Australian Government’s use of the term “illegal maritime arrivals” for asylum seekers arriving by boat. The joint letter, coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) and supported by nongovernment agencies, faith-based organisations and community groups, was sent to the Prime Minister last week. RCOA chief executive officer Paul Power said the letter was developed in response to requests from concerned Australians wishing to see a joint response to last month’s decision of the Australian Government that Government staff and contractors must use the term “illegal maritime arrivals” when referring to asylum seekers arriving by boat.
“It is very clear, and senior members of the Government have acknowledged this, that it is not illegal to seek asylum,” Mr Power said. “The use of the word ‘illegal’ ignores the reality that, in legal and practical terms, the flight of asylum seekers to a place of safety is quite different to normal movements of migrants and that the intent of the Refugee Convention is to ensure that states do not block the paths of people escaping persecution. “While language is important, the joint letter reflects a growing sense of disquiet among many Australians about the nation’s response to people seeking protection from persecution. It also reflects concerns that the official use of such dehumanising language to refer to highly vulnerable people has implications for Australia’s social cohesion.”
Mr Power said the strong support from faith-based organisations was significant. “Sixty-three organisations from four faith traditions have signed the letter and, I am sure, many other faith-based organisations would support its sentiments,” he said. “Many Australians who have strong concern for the care of dispossessed people are deeply troubled by recent directions in Australian policy and particularly object to the use of inflammatory terms to refer to people who have little opportunity to defend themselves.” CHAIRMAN’S NOTE: Regional and Remote Newspapers, owners of the Western Cape Bulletin, decided last month that none of its publications will publish the term “illegal arrivals”.

HISTORY
Back in the Day
By Brian Randall State Library of Queensland
The Gulf town of Karumba The town of Karumba has a long and varied history, much of which is closely associated with the town of Normanton. Karumba itself was originally settled in the 1860s as a lighterage centre for the shipping that used Gulf waters. Also, as Normanton developed as an important supply point for the gold and copper fields located in the area’s hinterland, Karumba’s role in terms of supporting shipping operations became even more important. The town was originally known as Norman Mouth from 1867, then as Kimberley from 1873. The name Karumba, said to be of Indigenous origin, came into more common usage through the late 1870s and was officially adopted as the town’s name in the 1880s. However, despite this name change, the town’s telegraph office continued to be known as Kimberley. Growth fluctuated due to both economic and seasonal influences, with Karumba’s permanent population, in 1900, being around fifty. At this time however, the permanent and transient population were able to support two hotels. As with Normanton, Karumba’s
growth slowed along with the decline of the Croydon and Cloncurry mineral fields. The 1930s saw a brief revival of the town’s fortunes with the establishment and operation of Shand’s Meatworks. This enterprise had been opened with the aim of supplying meat to the Pacific Islands. Also, during the 1930s, Karumba was used as a refuelling and maintenance stop for the Empire flying boats on the newly established QANTAS route from Sydney to Britain. After the Second World War, Karumba’s economic fortunes were heavily reliant on the local fishing industry, with growth increasing in the 1960s as the prawn fishing industry developed. The Century zinc mine, with its associated pipeline, was also able to provide a boost to the town’s fortunes. The historical remnants of Karumba’s past include old QANTAS cottages, flying boat slipway as well as an old fuel storage tank. The image below, dating from 1955, shows the former QANTAS base only some 20 years after the high point of the airline’s flying boat era.

Classic Catch 22 scenario for Indigenous Australians IT can be a no-win situation for many Indigenous Australians wanting to gain employment through an apprenticeship or traineeship – being unable to do so because of a missing piece of paper. The classic Catch22 (being stymied/thwarted/blocked) plays out like this: • you can’t complete an apprenticeship or traineeship if you can’t be deemed competent in your training component • you can’t be deemed competent if you are not literate or numerate • you can’t achieve numeracy or literacy if you have an underlying medical condition such as a hearing impairment that causes the illiteracy
Cape Car & Boat Wash
• if the underlying medical condition has not been diagnosed and there is no link with future literacy issues, there is no evidential documentation • without the evidence, support services are not able to be put in place to help • if people able to do something about it don’t know that all that’s required is the piece of paper, then they won’t know to do something about it • if the medical condition is not addressed, you can’t complete the apprenticeship or traineeship. And so the cycle goes around; particularly for Aboriginal Australians in remote regions where many children suffer undiagnosed hearing impairment. Brett Cooper and Rikki Cooper (same last name, not related, but same passion) from MEGT Australia are smashing through these blockages. The Coopers have been travelling through-
out regional Queensland, alerting people to the Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support funding and the benefits of entering a career through an apprenticeship or traineeship. “We’re visiting everyone we can think of,” explains Mr Cooper. “Centrelink staff, Job Services staff, Aboriginal communities, doctor’s surgeries and medical clinics, Disability Employment Services and Indigenous Employment Programs. “ We ’ r e l e t t i n g people know about the Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support incentive available to eligible employers and the Registered Training Organisation and that all that may be missing to get this support is a piece of paper. The piece of paper is the medical evidence. “With that evidence, the support enabled by the government’s financial assistance, may make the difference between an Aboriginal apprentice or trainee tak-

The species of turtle that nests most commonly along the beaches near Weipa and Mapoon is the Flatback Turtle. This beautiful animal in fact only lives in the waters around northern Australia and New Guinea. As such it is known as an Australian ‘endemic’ turtle. Flatbacks generally prefer to live in inshore waters where they feed on molluscs, seaweed, soft corals and sea anemonies. The mature females are unusual among most turtles in that they will come up the beach to nest during daylight hours as well as at night, usually around the high tide. The main nesting period is May to October, and the females will come ashore four times each season to lay between 50 and 70 eggs. Like other turtles, the female Flatbacks return to the same or a nearby

beach where they hatched to nest, and so have a remarkable homing instinct. The turtle in the picture below has had a large chunk bitten out of its carapace by a shark at one stage during its adventurous lifetime. Like crocodiles, turtles have a remarkable ability to heal from such injuries, which is of great interest to scientists. All turtles fulfil crucial roles in their marine ecosystems in many ways. For example the shell fragments of molluscs that are left behind when Flatback and Loggerhead Turtles eat the inside animal, break down and release calcium into the water much more quickly than a whole shell would. This calcium is then much more readily available for coral polyps to make coral with. Turtles too are of great cultural importance to Indigenous people, and have also become iconic animals in many western societies.

When the Lord walked among his followers in his resurrected body, h e re v e a l e d h o w marvellous it was, being both solid and spirit, if it could be put that way. We also figured out that fourteen people saw Jesus since his resurrection and talked with him and ate with him, and even touched him. Actually that is just the numbers of witnesses who saw Jesus as written in the gospels. Read what Paul
By Rev. Michael Connolly
says in his first letter to the church in Corinth. (Read 1 Corinthians Ch 15 vs 1-9). “I passed on to you what I received, which is of the greatest importance: that Christ died for our sin, as written in the Scriptures; that he was buried and that he was raised to life three days later, as written in the Scriptures; that he appeared to Peter and then to all twelve apostles. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of his followers at once, most
of whom are still alive, although some have died. Then he appeared to James and afterwards to all the apostles. Last of all he appeared also to me - even though I am like someone whose birth was abnormal. For I am the least of all the apostles- I do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God’s church.” How’s that for witness numbers! He is risen.

NEWS
The story behind the naming of two sister ships Many Weipa residents drive past Rio Tinto alcan Weipa’s shiploading wharf at Lorim Point, but many may not know the significance of the names of the two sister ships they often see – the RTM Piiramu and RTM Wakmatha. These vessels are remarkable in the Rio Tinto Marine fleet, as they represent the language names of two of the men who played an important role in discovering bauxite on western Cape York Peninsula. Commercial quantities of bauxite were first discovered on Aboriginal lands in Weipa in 1955 by geologist Harry Evans, who was assisted by George Wilson (Piiramu), Old Matthew (Wakmatha) and Lea Wassell. Piiramu (pronounced Peer-ra-moo) is a Kaanju elder from the inland country along the Wenlock River, near the old Wenlock Gold Field. Wakmatha (pronounced: wok-martha), meaning Stormbird or Common Koel, was a Linngithigh man from the country south of the Embley River from Hey Point, or Moingum, across to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Both men had detailed knowledge
of the country, which significantly contributed to the success of Evans’s exploration trip. When Rio Tinto Marine commissioned these two new state-of-the-art vessels in its fleet, they wanted to acknowledge the significant role of the two men, as well acknowledge the fact that Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa operates on Aboriginal land. Rio Tinto Marine celebrated the naming of the vessels Wakmatha and Piiramu - and their maiden voyages to Weipa - in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In December this year, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa will celebrate 50 years of operating and reaching 500 million tonnes of bauxite shipped. To mark the milestone, a ceremony will be held on Monday, December 2, on the lawns of the RTA Administration Building at Lorim Point, starting from 9am and concluding with a morning tea at 10am. Wakmatha’s descendants continue to reside in Napranum and Aurukun while Piiramu retired in the mid-1980s and continues to enjoy a quiet life with his family at Napranum.

Weipa Sportsfishers weigh-in some great fish Ten people, including three juniors, participated in this month’s Weipa sportsfishing Club competition and some good fish were weighed in. Phil and Nick ventured south to Aurukun for their weekend and were rewarded with some excellent fish including Red Emperor, GTs, Mackerel (which were the target species) and Fingermark. Phil had a massive score of 1134 points with all five of his fish being in excess of 100 points. Gaven, Dillion and I targeted Threadfin Salmon and Queenfish and although the Threadies were conspicuous by their absence the Queenies were thick.
Gaven managed to land one around 1.7kg on 1kg line which was a good effort. Dillion and I managed a couple each on 4kg to weigh in and release quiet a few also. The Beilby’s fished a secret spot and caught Grunter and Golden Trevally and the Slack family kids got stuck into some Estuary Cod. So some good efforts put in by members this week. The Club Christmas party has been decided for Monday, December 9 at 6pm at the Aspinall’s. The next competition will be on December 14 and 15 with the target species Queenfish. –Frenchy

Dirt Kart Club plans to finish season with a bang Finish with a bang is what the Weipa Dirt Kart Club intend on doing to round out the 2013 dirt kart season. On Saturday, November 23, the Weipa Dirt Kart Club will be hosting the 2013 Kowari Motors 22-lap Weipa Enduro. This is a race that’s been run over the last couple of years and pools all the adult drivers on the track at one time, in what we call the race to end all races. It’s fantastic that Kowari Motors have come on board to support the fastest little club in Weipa again this season after their fabulous support for the inaugural running of the Queensland Dirt Kart Title this year. This will be a terrific way for the club to finish the year which

has recently been going through some challenging times. With the power being turned off to the facility some three weeks ago, our ability to run any night meetings has been impossible and has forced us to try and run a meeting on a Sunday morning. As anyone knows who has lived in our fabulous part of the world for a while, it can get real hot this time of the year and the major concern is trying to maintain a safe environment
for our drivers , especially our junior racers. With all the safety equipment we use these days such as race suits, neck braces, gloves and race boots, the heat can certainly suck the life out of the body in this heat. So with the help from some fantastic people at Rio Tinto and Goodline, hopefully the power will be restored in the coming week and normality will be restored. With the 2013 Kowari Motors 22-lap Enduro to be our
last race meeting for the year, we are hoping that we can get some people out to the track to come and celebrate with us a defining year for the club. We will have giveaways for the spectators, food and alcohol and of course some fantastic racing with the all-in adult feature race. This will have at least 20 karts on the track so there will be action a plenty from start to finish so come on out and join us.

A BuSy weekend at the Club saw the end of year junior presentation of trophies last Sunday. Also on Sunday, DawnBusters played out their 2013 championships. Congratulations to all that picked up an award. Both events were well attended. On Saturday, November 9, senior members played a 4BBB Stableford. Although only a small field, the event was hotly contested with the eventual winners on 49 points being Brett Elms and Kris Brooks. Runners-up were the pairing of Roy Burley and Paul Vardy with 46 points. Nearest the pins on hole 15 was Taxi Mick, while on 18 Mark Tillmouth was closest. On Sunday, November 10 (Newmie’s birthday), the hardy golfers played a Single Stroke event. The smallish field witnessed the lowest nett score recorded on the course for many years and debatably the lowest nett score ever handed in. Bobby Stevens was the man of the hour, and of course the winner of the day, with a brilliant 88 off the stick for a nett round of 56. Well done Bobby. The runner up was the writer, some 18 nett strokes adrift of the winner. Only one par three was landed on and the nearest the pin prize was on hole 9 by Brooksy. It goes to show that our newer members can enjoy and play the game, because golf with its handicapping system, is a great leveller. So let’s see a lot more ladies and new members playing competition. Thanks to the Club for sponsoring both days. Next weekend we play a Single Stableford on Saturday, November 16. An early tee-off time slot at 10am is available for those who wish as the presentation dinner starts at 7pm. On Sunday, November 17 members will play a Single Stroke. See you at the presentation dinner, it will be a great night. - Clarkey

Don’t forget to e-mail me your photos and reports and until next week calm seas, light breezes and tight lines.
The Mission River has been providing enough sport to give most anglers a feed of fish, and the Mission River bridge has not been letting anyone down giving up some big Blue Salmon, Fingermark and Queenfish and there are still a few Barra being caught. Don’t forget, Barra need to be released as soon as possible because of the closed season. The crabs have slowed down here but up at Mapoon they have been going off with some double figure captures coming in.
been slow with a lot of juvenile fish being caught but the odd good fish has been coming aboard for those that persevere with small fish by-catch. There are still a few Mackerel around so it is definitely worth a troll on the popular reefs. My pick for an offshore fish would have to be out of Mapoon, with Tuskers and good Fingermark on the close-in reefs and Kerr’s Reef has to be worth a troll for Mackerel. In the local rivers there have been mixed captures as well.

The Billfish bite from last weekend was a monster bite with nine club boats scoring over 60 fish for the weekend. The bite tapered off in the early part of the week but there was still enough action to keep the boats that could be out there looking for that purple patch of water and bait fish. Dylan Wilhelmi and I had a look on Saturday but we only had bite-offs from Mackerel. Other boats a couple of miles away had some good results, with Ben Bright tagging at least four fish and he is still chasing them. Talking about Billfish, the Weipa Billfish Club’s ladies competition will be held on December 7 and nominations are now being taken (see page 28). The minimum number of anglers is one, however there must be at least two people on board (i.e. one angler and a skipper) with a maximum of four female anglers. Each boat will receive two free passes to the cocktail presentation and additional tickets are available for $20. Fishing on the bottom has

Ladies prepare to land the big ones THE Weipa Billfish Club Inc. welcomes all participating members and guests to the 2013 Weipa Billfish Club Ladies Day Fishing Tournament on Saturday, December 7. The concept for this event came from a few female Club members who have fished a similar style of events in the past, aiming to have a fun day and raising money for the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation places Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia, as well as increasing breast cancer awareness in young Australian women. After the success of our annual Billfish Tournament, where 20 boats tagged 47 Billfish over a three-day period, our first ever ladies event is shaping up to be equally successful. In recent weeks Albatross Bay has seen an influx of Billfish on the bait grounds on a scale that puts Weipa right up there with a lot of the top light tackle game fish locations in Australia. Two weekends ago Club boats tagged over 50 fish in two days and raised countless more – it was an epic weekend. During the two days a lot of female anglers got amongst the action, including seven-year old Emmi Roberts who landed her first Black Marlin, so age is no barrier. But the weekend is not just about fishing - it’s also about having fun. The Club has included prize categories for best dressed team, which includes team members and

their boat. Already teams have been assembled and game plans formulated about team uniforms or costumes and how to dress-up the boats for the day. Friday night starts off the whole affair with a briefing where the rules of the competition will be explained. Saturday starts at 7am with a drive-by and shotgun start at Evans Landing. This is where teams can flaunt their stuff and show off their boats. Fishing also starts at this time and ends at 5pm that afternoon. Men can be the Skipper or the deckie but the women are doing the fishing. Target species include tag and release Billfish and other game fish which will be weighed in. These include Mackerel, Cobia, Tuna, Trevally, Queenfish and Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi). These will be weighed-in on a points per kilo system. Sunday’s weigh-in will be from 10am until noon at the Weipa Bowls Club and following this will be a cocktail and presentation evening starting at 4pm. Cocktails will be served for the ladies and finger food will be available. Nominations for this inaugural event will be $45 per lady. If you have a few lady friends out there who like having a good time and want to support a good cause why not consider entering a team in our event. For more details please contact Louise on 0439 665 714 or Darryl on 0447 453 972.
Teagan is keen to get amongst the action after landing her first Billfish.
Andrea hopes this will be the first of many Billfish she will land.
