In the pink for ladies Billfish fundraiser
Edition 422

By Darryl French
LAST weekend the Weipa Billfish Club hosted it’s inaugural ladies gamefish charity fundraiser and judging by the turn out and response, this event will be a permanent fixture on Weipa’s event calendar. The club committee were expecting around a dozen boats to participate in the fundraiser but were blown away at Thursday’s nomination when 21 boats registered, and 54 anglers nominated, including one junior. This was higher than the entries for the main Billfish competition held in October and really highlighted how the ladies of this town get behind charitable events such as this one. continued page 22 The Weipa Billfish Club’s Ladies Fundraiser best dressed boat award went to the Fish ‘n’ Chicks team aboard the boat Wine Down. WEIPA received a little holiday cheer when Santa Claus visited Woolworths last Thursday night and Saturday morning. Santa had many overjoyed children visit, who told him their Christmas wishes – and made sure he knew how well-behaved the children in Weipa are. T h e We s t e r n C a p e NAIDOC Planning committee thanked all those parents and children who came out to participate in the fundraising event and had a photo taken with Santa. Western Cape NAIDOC Planning committee member, Bianca Graham said the support from the community and Woolworths was instrumental in fundraising for NAIDOC celebrations. “This could not have happened without support from the very accommodating staff at Woolworths over the last week,” Ms Graham said. “And an extra big thank you to Santa himself, travelling all that way to bring a little festive cheer to Weipa.” “The fundraiser would not be possible without him.” “The photo packages that were ordered will be sent out over the coming week.”

WELL, well, Christmas is coming and perhaps they will let me out of Canberra so I can spend Christmas back home in Brisbane. After all, there’s not much I can do here. I know Tony has threatened to make all the polies work over Christmas, but that’s not going to happen. They have told him to bugger off, and are packing their bags right now. Always the same at this time of year - one week you are being drowned in festive punch at party after party, and

the next everyone has gone home for the holidays and Canberra is a lively as a morgue. Can’t say I have achieved very much in the last month, but what did they expect? Tony has been threshing about like a wild and uncontrollable leader of the opposition, and the Opposition are sitting around looking a little miffed because nothing they can do will harm the Coalition more than they are harming themselves. With everything Tony tries turning to dust around him, there is not much we could do to help. No amount of polish and elbow grease will put a shine on the backflips and failures. Whether it is the carbon tax, immigration, education funding, spying on our neighbours, being rude to China... sorry, there’s only so much I can do. Just as well that Joe Hockey is so good at making excuses. I’ve been buttering up the press with

long lunches but still Gormless O’Driscoll, the News Corp hack in Canberra, made me sit back and think the other day. Between his fourth and fifth pints of Guiness he suddenly said, “You know, I miss Julia sometimes. At least she got things done, even if she didn’t have a majority in the house.” Yes, the backyard in Brisbane is looking very attractive. I am not so sure about work, not with the Oberführer going crazy at the moment. Having a hissy fit over Clive Palmer, sacking judges who won’t toe the line, appointing his ex-commanding officer to run Special Operations against the bikies... and now he’s building a secret tunnel/bunker under his new HQ. I think I might let that all blow over. I’m due some long service leave, and perhaps everyone will be back to normal when I return. Bruce O’Krat, Advisor to the Minister

To fluoridate our water or not?
“
Studies have shown that topping up fluoride levels in water can reduce the risk of dental decay by up to 40 per cent
“
Under the new State Government it is no longer a requirement to fluoridate, instead a local authority can make that decision itself, in consultation with the community. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg has said it was the philosophy of the LNP to work with councils and to support informed debate and decision making at the local level. He said Queensland Health continued to advocate for the inclusion of fluoride in water supplies. The WTA has now been informed by the Department of State Development Infrastructure and Planning it is eligible for funding under the new government agreement to install and commission a fluoride plant at the Rocky Point Water Treatment Plant. The funding is only available
until June 30, 2014 so WTA is interested in the communities view about fluoridation of water. Fluoride is a naturally occurring compound found in water, plants, rocks, soil, air and foods. The aim of water fluoridation is to adjust the natural fluoride concentration in fluoride-deficient water to that recommended for optimal dental health. Studies have shown that topping up fluoride levels in water can reduce the risk of dental decay by up to 40 per cent. More than 150 major health organisations including the World Health Organisation, the Australian Medical Association and the Australian Dental Association support water fluoridation. Since the Newman government has allowed local councils to opt out of fluoridation, more than ten have voted to stop fluoridating water supplies. These include Cairns, Cherbourg, Doomadgee, North Burnett, Rockhampton, South Burnett and Wide Bay. Others that have also decided not to proceed include Atherton Tablelands, Bundaberg, Cassowary Coast, Cloncurry, Toowoomba, Whitsunday, St George, Barcaldine, Blackall, Charleville, Paroo and Mount Isa. These decisions have been made for several reasons including the cost of fluoridation, it can be impractical because the town water comes from a bore, the town is too small and/or they have difficulty in attracting and training water treatment plant operators as well as controversy over its use. Anti-fluoride activists claim it is a poison and can cause serious health problems by building up as a toxin in your system. These claims however are unproven. They say it is a form of mass medication. They also say that the dosage cannot

be properly controlled and that it is costly. The only known adverse effect is a slight increase in dental fluorosis -discolouration of the tooth enamel - but Queensland Health maintains that dental fluorosis is barely detectable whereas tooth decay is painful and expensive. There are increasing scientific studies showing the state of your dental health can be linked to your overall health and well-being.

WEIPA Town Authority is seeking feedback from the community as to whether it should fluoridate the town water supply. Fluoridisation of Queensland water supplies was made mandatory in 2008 under the Bligh Labor Government in a bid to reduce the state’s poor dental health record. But that regulation has since changed after the Newman Liberal National Government took office in 2012. Until 2008 Townsville was the only place in Queensland with fluoride in the water. The Water Fluoridation Act 2008 required water suppliers to add fluoride to any public potable water supply that provided water to at least 1000 people.
WHAT’S ON...
1n 1999 the U.S. listed water fluoridation as one of the ten great health achievements of the 20th century alongside vaccination and the recognition of the danger of smoking. In October 2005 the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health led a review of the use of fluorides in Australia using more than 30 experts nationwide and backed its use through a set of guidelines for the use of fluorides in Australia. “ W TA m e m b e r s h a v e expressed concern about the on-
going annual costs of $50,000 to maintain the fluoride plant but are interested in community feedback,” WTA Interim Chair Stretch Noonan said. Today around 90 per cent of Australians have access to fluoridated water. Other state and territory populations have high levels of access to fluoridated water including 100 per cent in the ACT, 83 per cent in Tasmania, 77 per cent in Victoria,92 per cent in New South Wales and Western Australia, 90 per cent in South Australia and 70 per cent in the Northern Territory. New after-school care facility Cape and Torres health for Western Cape College services to merge IN recent months, Rio Tinto Alcan has been working to deliver a new facility to the Western Cape College that can provide out-of-school-hours care for Weipa families. Rio Tinto Alcan has agreed to invest more than $140,000 to provide a new facility through their partnership with the Western Cape College. Sea Swift and Remote Building Solutions have both contributed to the project, both providing the freight of the facility to Weipa. The Weipa Town Authority, Goodline and Ausco are also to be acknowledged for their support.
Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa manager, Community Relations, Brad Welsh, said the project will be delivered as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Western Cape College in the Weipa community. “It’s very important that Weipa residents are given an opportunity to get their kids into quality care after the school day finishes,” Mr Welsh said. Cairns-based developer Remote Building Solutions has been engaged to design and deliver the new facility, with work to begin immediately after the school year ends.
“Work will soon be under way and will continue during the school’s summer holiday,” Mr Welsh said. Western Cape College principal, Leon Proud, said out-of-schoolhours care programmes are vital in promoting healthy child development and ensuring families can take part in the workforce. “I am pleased that between all parties involved in the project, we are able to provide this facility for working parents and the broader community,” Mr Proud said. It is anticipated the facility will be completed and installed in early 2014.

T H E C a p e Yo r k and Torres Strait– Northern Peninsula Hospital and Health Services will merge to improve health service delivery for residents in the far north. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the Torres Strait had been without a health board for some time and this process would result in stronger governance, better representation and ultimately, improved patient services. “The State Government is committed to revitalising front line services and I will be asking Cape York Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Bob McCarthy to develop a plan as to how to move forward with this merge,” Mr Springborg said. “As part of this process, extensive consultation will need to be undertaken and I feel Mr McCarthy is best placed to carry out the task.”
The Western Cape
Mr Springborg said due to their small size, individually, the two health services lack the critical mass for efficient, stand-alone administration. “Combining the two health services will result in a single, efficient administrative structure, reduce unnecessary duplication and allow the health service to put more focus on delivering quality health care,’ he said. “The combined entity will have one executive management team and a single board representing the whole region. “The new Board will have an equal spread of members from the Cape York and the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula communities.” Mr Springborg said the two health services were no strangers to working together and were a single entity as the Peninsula and Torres Strait Regional Health Authority in
the 1990s. “They already cooperate with each other and with the Cairns and Hinterland HHS on a number of matters, including the delivery of specialist outreach clinical services,” he said. Member for Cook, David Kempton said: “I welcome the establishment of the new board as a first step towards greater autonomy for health services in regional and remote areas.” Under the current health reforms, the new combined health service will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and remote communities in Cape York to have a greater voice, a greater scale of operation and more control of their health services. Mr Springborg said the timeline for achieving a merge was flexible but he hoped the new structure could be in place by mid2014.

Cape Alumina to focus on development of Bauxite Hills project
Western Cape Bulletin is now on

Following the Queensland government’s determination that mining will be banned on the portion of Cape Alumina’s Pisolite Hills bauxite project which underlies the Steve irwin wildlife Reserve on western Cape York the company will elevate its focus on development of its Bauxite Hills mine and port project. The board made this decision after a meeting between Cape Alumina’s Chairman, Mr George Lloyd, Managing Director, Mr Graeme Sherlock, and Queensland’s Deputy Premier, Mr Jeff Seeney, this week. The meeting was held to discuss the impact of the Queensland Government’s proposed Cape York Regional Plan on Cape Alumina’s mining lease applications and exploration permits on western Cape York. Mr Sherlock said that “overall the meeting was positive” but the Government and the company did “agree to disagree” on several matters. “The Queensland Government committed to work with Cape Alumina during the finalisation of the Cape York Regional Plan to ensure that the true economic and environmental values associated with Cape Alumina’s Cape York bauxite tenements are fully understood,” he said. The draft Cape York Regional Plan is currently open for public consultation. It is expected that the plan will be finalised by mid-2014. Mr Sherlock said that Cape Alumina remains confident that the Queensland Government will give the company “a fair go” and support the development of the Bauxite Hills mine and port project. “If the Government is serious about creating environmentally sustainable economic development on Cape York then it will work cooperatively with us to advance the development of Bauxite Hills,” he said. “The Bauxite Hills project, along with other proposed resource developments on Cape York, will bring
significant social and economic benefits to the traditional owners and local aboriginal communities through royalties, skills training and business development opportunities. “Cape Alumina is a responsible corporate citizen which has always worked collaboratively with its stakeholders towards its goal of delivering sustainable and profitable bauxite mining projects which make positive social, economic and environmental contributions to the local communities and the broader Australian public. “That is how we are approaching the development of the Bauxite Hills project,” he said. With regard to the Queensland Government’s decision that it would ban mining at the Bertiehaugh Cattle Station and the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve “in perpetuity”, which has had a significant impact on the value of Cape Alumina’s Pisolite Hills project, Mr Sherlock said the parties have “agreed to disagree”. “We remain bitterly disappointed with the Queensland Government’s decision but we acknowledge their right to make those decisions – regardless of whether or not we think that they are in the genuine and longterm interests of all Queenslanders,” Mr Sherlock said. “We were completely surprised by this decision and had expected that the future of the project would be determined through a genuine and rigorous environmental assessment process. “We are also extremely disappointed for the traditional land owners of the Pisolite Hills project area who would have benefited through employment and business opportunities and hundreds of millions of dollars in direct royalty payments,” he said. Mr Sherlock has also rejected the assertion from the Government that it had warned the company that it was going to recognise Bertiehaugh Cattle Station and the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve with a special status.
The proposed Bauxite Hills integrated mine and port project is located approximately 95 kilometres north of Weipa, within the bauxite plateau between the Ducie and Skardon Rivers, and five kilometres south-east of the existing port at Skardon River.
“In all of our meetings with Queensland Government Ministers, their advisers and departmental staff, the Government had confirmed its commitment to due process and that Cape Alumina’s projects would be assessed based on their merits – specifically the environmental credentials of the Pisolite Hills project which would be established by the environmental impact statement,” he said. “For example, as recently as late September this year, the Queensland Government said that: “The consideration of, or grant or otherwise of, the mining lease applications impacting on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve area will
continue through due process with consideration of the requirements of all applicable legislation, including native title rights and interests and environmental impact assessments.” “All we have ever expected is a fair go, for due process to be followed and, more importantly, for decisions to be based upon scientific rigour not politics. “We reserve our right to challenge the Queensland Government’s decision, which will not be enacted until legislation is passed next year.” Mr Sherlock said that Cape Alumina’s exploration tenements predate the establishment of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve and the recently declared Steve Irwin Wild-

Building work is now well underway on a brand new supermarket at napranum, the biggest ever to be built in the Cape York indigenous community. The Island & Cape store, which is being funded by the Queensland Government and Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, will supply the approximately 850 local residents with groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products, clothing and much more. The store’s building frame has now been constructed, with the other stages of construction and fit-out set to be completed over the coming months. Island & Cape Retail Operations Manager Craig Oxlade said the 550 square metre supermarket will also create more than 20 full-time and part-time positions in Napranum. “This is an extremely exciting development for the local residents, one they have been waiting a long time for,” he said. “Residents of Napranum sometimes have to pay taxi fares in excess of $40 each way to travel
to Weipa to shop, so this store will greatly benefit the community.” Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council interviewed prospective businesses to run the store as part of the new supermarket process, with Island & Cape winning the contract. “The council said they chose Island & Cape over other organisations because they were impressed by our track record of running outstanding communitybased stores, and our strong commitment to employing and training local people,” Mr Oxlade said. Work on the new supermarket is expected to be officially completed for a grand opening in mid-2014. Mr Oxlade said there will be nationally-accredited training offered to the store’s new employees, as is the case in all Island & Cape stores. “Island & Cape will also be investing approximately $350,000 in new equipment to fit out the new building, and then it will hold about $500,000 in stock when filled,” he said. “The store will have the latest
point-of-sale systems, including wireless linked ordering system, with integrated security monitoring throughout the complex. “We’d also like to thank the local council, who are making a significant investment in this project over and above the State Government grant.” Mr Oxlade said Island & Cape has a proud 10-year history of working closely with remote communities across the region. “Island & Cape always plays an active role in the communities where we operate,” he said. “We continually invest in the communities, through infrastructure, employment and social contribution. Giving back is a core value of Island & Cape.” The Island & Cape retail division provides Indigenous communities across Far North Queensland with food and goods through retail stores, supermarkets and takeaways. Other Island & Cape stores in the region are located on Badu Island, Dauan Island, Horn Island and Yorke Island in the Torres Strait, and in Aurukun, Wujal Wujal, Hopevale and Yarrabah.

JCU Alcohol Management Plan survey results RESULTS from a survey conducted by the James Cook University into Alcohol Management Plans in Queensland have been released. During October 2013 the project team surveyed 95 community members from Mapoon, Napranum and Weipa, aged 18 and over, both male and female, some drinkers and some nonedrinkers. Those surveyed were invited to have their say about Alcohol Management Plans (AMPs) in the community and their experiences of AMPS.
Before designing the survey and the questions the project team interviewed 85 people with long experience in the area. Some of those interviewed suggested the survey the team conducted to give more people the chance to have a say. Results from the survey included (and see tables below) – Opinion is divided about whether Alcohol Management Plans have: • reduced alcohol-related violence and improved personal safety • benefited the community to make it a better place to live
Communities want to: • play a greater role in determining the management of alcohol • reduce discrimination brought on by these alcohol policies and alcohol restrictions • implement culturally-relevant services for people with alcohol problems in the community. In 2013/14 the project team will continue to conduct research on the effects of AMPs in all of the affected Indigenous communities and regional towns across Queensland and provide feedback to community councils as requested.

remaining at Weipa and it is more a matter of when is the right time to proceed with mining them.” Speaking at last week’s Weipa 50 years of operation celebrations Pat Fiore, president and chief executive, Bauxite & Alumina said: “I look forward to the Weipa mining operations continuing to generate employment and other economic benefits - not only for the Western Cape, but for the broader Queensland community as well - for generations to come.”

to work carefully through its internal governance and investment processes to ensure that a sound investment decision is made,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson told the Western Cape Bulletin that the Andoom mine has a current life until the late 2020s, depending on production rates and the mine life could be extended with further exploration potential. “Weipa will continue to be the base of our Western Cape bauxite operations. D AV I D K e m p t o n , Member for Cook, says he will continue to lobby to ensure economic development is not compromised in the regional planning process as questions concerning the recent Irwin Wildlife Reserve declaration continue. “I will seek community input and fight to ensure that the correct balance is reached in dealing with mining and all development in my electorate,” Mr Kempton said. “It will be a matter of ensuring that economic opportunity is not hampered by red tape and over emphasis on environmental outcomes when planning for the future. “A very important message has emerged from recent events in the Cape York mining industry. “Residents, businesses and communities must look to diversify if there is to be future financial security in the region. “There are always risks in putting all our eggs in one basket,” he said Mr Kempton said downward pressure in world alumina prices had created doubts about the

future expansion of Rio Tinto’s South of Embley project and all bauxite projects in the Cape. “I am assured however that Rio Tinto have not canned the project and will continue with the process for a later commencement date,” he said. Mr Kempton has also expressed concerns at the potential impact of the intended environmental zones in the draft regional plan. “I am encouraging everyone to consider the plan carefully and to make submissions if any existing or proposed business or land use is affected,” he said. “We need to make sure our economic opportunity is preserved in the planning process. “That does not mean there will be no safeguards for the environment but importantly, it will bring a big shift
away from the past Labor Government policy to lock up the Cape.” Mr Kempton assured his electorate that the highest standards around environmental protection would be maintained but said there would be no more blanket policies like Wild Rivers. “I recognise that in achieving the right balance there are some cases where mining will be wholly inconsistent with the long term sustainability of the environment,” he said. “But I am keen to ensure that the regional planning process will not go too far.” Mr Kempton will seek community input at a meeting late in January to ensure there is a consistent and informed response to the regional planning process. “I will lobby the Premier and the Minister to ensure that mining and all industry is able to realise its full potential and contribute to the local and state economy whilst preserving those ecological features that make Cape York a unique place,” he said. “This after all is the main purpose of the regional planning process.” Mr Kempton said he was committed to work-
ing with Cape Alumina and all mining companies in the region to assess the full impact of the recent announcement and to determine if there are options and alternatives to ensure viability. “I understand the concerns of local businesses and I will be making representations to the Minister in respect of this decision and the impact of the regional plan on existing and proposed mining,” he said. “I want to ensure all decisions around environmental protection that impact on mining are made on solid scientific or sound future planning ground.” Mr Kempton said “the planning process has encouraged an unprecedented level of community involvement and I am confident that in the long term we will see a thriving economy within a viable and stable environment” Mr Kempton confirmed his commitment to developing a diversified Cape economy through essential infrastructure such as the PDR and supporting such industries as cattle, tourism, construction, timber harvesting and mining.

New dolphin species discovered off northern Australia A NeW humpback dolphin species has been described off the north coast of Australia, Australian Geographic reports. The new species grows up to 2.8m in length and is found all around the north of Australia from Queensland and the NT, to Shark Bay in WA. The dolphins live in coastal waters, deltas, estuaries and inshore reefs. The as yet unnamed animal was discovered by international scientists studying the number of species of humpback dolphin, which are found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans along the coasts of Africa, India and Australia. “The discovery of a new species . . . is always exciting and we are of course delighted,” says Dr Guido Parra, a biologist and research leader of the Cetacean Ecology, Behaviour and Evolution Lab (CEBEL) at Flinders University in Adelaide. Prior to this study, led by the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), humpback dolphins were divided into an

Atlantic and an Indo-Pacific species. For the study, the team looked at 180 skulls and tissues samples from 230 dolphins. Dr Howard Rosenbaum, a WCS biologist, says it was one of the most-rigorous analysese to date of these dolphins. The morphological and genetic data, detailed in the journal Molecular Ecology, suggests that Australian humpback dolphins are an isolated population. “Previously, humpback
dolphins throughout the IndoPacific were treated as a single species,” Guido told Australian Geographic. “The discovery that Australian humpback dolphins are a separate species from those in south-east Asia has important conservation implications as they need to be considered separately from populations elsewhere.” “Discovering a new species increases our knowledge about nature,” Howard says.
“In the current context of biodiversity decline and urgent need of effective wildlife and habitat conservation schemes, this knowledge allows . . . plans tailored to protecting each species along its distribution areas.” Guido says further research is being conducted into the dolphins’ habitats, social structure and population numbers to better target conservation efforts.

WHEn the Lord left his disciples he rose up on clouds and the disciples watched him until he could no longer be seen. Then the angels said something very important to them, that the Lord would be coming back to Earth again in the same way that they saw him go. So the Lord is returning for his people surrounded by clouds, (and many Christians say that his return is very
close now), and it will be a spectacular entrance. Listen to 1 Thessalonians Ch 4 vs 16-18; “There will be the shout of command, the archangel’s voice, the sound of God’s trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died believing in Christ will rise to life first; then we who are living at that time will be gathered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
And so we will always be with the Lord. So then, encourage one another with these words.” It will be a joyful sight for those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, but I reckon it will be a terribly scary sight for those who have rejected him and are left behind. Where do you stand right now? Believe him and accept him.
– Rev Michael Connolly

Mandela remembered as humble freedom fighter By Mark Bousen
THE late Madiba Nelson Mandela was a humble freedom fighter who promoted truth, justice and reconciliation with violence, a prominent world, human rights figure has said. Professor Gracelyn Smallwood, who last month received a United Nations Award for her 45 years of work and service for national and international health and human rights, told the Western Cape Bulletin at the Australian South Sea Islanders (ASSI) forum at Tweed Heads on the weekend. Professor Smallwood, who lives in Townsville, met Mr Mandela in 1997 when she and Dr Chris Sarra were VIP guests of the South African President for the 20th anniversary of the death in custody of the late Steve Biko. “We were among the millions and we were waving the Aboriginal and Torres Islander flags near Mr Mandela. “The flags were spotted by Mr Mandela’s good friend Kwame Ture, the former Black Panther who was previously known as Stokely Carmichael, who was seated next to Mr Mandela. “Mr Mandela sent one of his guards who was carrying a machine gun and with a dog to invite us to sit in a vacant chair next to him.
Professor Gracelyn Smallwood.
“As there was only one seat, Dr Sarra and I decided to take a rain check and would meet the President at a small function that night.” Professor Smallwood recounts that President Manela was accompanied by journalist Donald Woods, who promoted and assisted with the movie Cry Freedom, the movie based on Biko’s life and death. “Mr Mandela made a humble statement about obtaining reconciliation with the truth. But in Australia, we’re trying to have reconciliation without the truth. “President Mandela also played a prominent role in the mediation with (Libyan leader) Colonel Gaddafi over the Pan Am incident (also known as the Lockerbie bombing). “In a sense, my father, Archie Smallwood, did in Australia what President Mandela did in South Africa about human rights.” The day following the celebrations in South Africa and Professor Smallwood and Dr Sarra travelled
to Libya via Malta to attend a human rights conference where Professor Smallwood talked about how the land rights fought for and won by the late Eddie Koiki Mabo were being watered down in Australia. “This created a massive breakdown and disharmony in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.” Professor Smallwood said there will be harmony only when reconciliation is achieved with truth. “Reparation and reconciliation needs to be made to the First Families, Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islanders/South Sea Islanders as this country has, in the last 230 years, become one of the wealthiest countries in the world on the back of black slavery.” Professor Smallwood is a registered nurse and midwife, prominent figure in Indigenous Mental Health and holds a Master of Science Degree in Public Health, as well as a PhD in First Nations Australian health and human rights. “The United Nations Award is a real honour as I have retired, but it also reflects on my parents, particularly my father who was from the Juru Birrigubba homeland (in the Bundaberg district) and was sent to the infamous Palm Island at a young age under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protection Act,” she said.

“The cruise is just incredible. Enjoy a champagne at sunset as you travel through the Great Barrier Reef, watch dolphins swim along the vessel, and enjoy the beautiful Top End of Australia. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience cruising along one of the most amazing parts of our country, and we’re thrilled to be able to provide access to more locals through this deal. “We’re very popular with the travelling grey nomad crowd, but we’re very keen for more Far North Queenslanders to also have the opportunity to experience this magical trip.” The Trinity Bay has 16 cabins, and is operated by a highly experienced and courteous crew to stringent safety standards. Inaugural Weipa Ladies Billfish Competition hailed a success
BILLFISH ACTION: Team Pink Bits was awarded the champion boat prize.
from page 1 The idea for the Ladies Billfish Fundraising Competition came from a few of the female Weipa Billfish Club members who have fished a similar style of event in the past, aiming to have a fun day and raising money for the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation places Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia, as well as increasing breast cancer awareness in young Australian women. With a prize for the best dressed boat, there was high anticipation for what would await everyone at the boat ramp on Saturday morning. When we came around the corner at 6.15am we were greeted with a sea of pink. There were skippers dressed in tutus, pink wigs of various shapes and forms, a boat full of superhero’s, pink flags and balloons flying off any available structure on the boats and our illustrious president even had a garden bar complete with a couple of floating Killer Whales towed behind the boat. Of course, there was the inevitable water bomb fights and Darren was trying hard to harpoon Duane’s Killer Whales. It was great to see the women really get into the spirit of the day and Stretch and Giembra from the Western Cape Bulletin were faced with the hard task of picking the best dressed boat. The title for this year’s tournament went to team “Fish n Chicks” on the boat Wine Down. The boats all lined up single file and had a sail past Evans Landing wharf and then roared off into the wild blue to start fishing . . . well most of us did. Team Envy got the hard luck award as they had
to pull out right at the start with a blown water pump. Mick and Lou got a bottle of Champers complete with water pump impeller for their troubles.’ Once out past the harbour the fleet was greeted with a stiff South East breeze which stayed with us all morning, before dying out to a glorious afternoon. The rolling seas of the morning saw quite a few crews turn green and start feeding the fish. The fleet were spread far and wide from Duyfken down to South of Pera and the fishing started out slowly for most boats. At the first radio sked only a couple of boats had seen a Billfish, although most boats were getting amongst the other Gamefish, namely Mackerel and Tuna, and of course big Barracuda. Just after 11am the call came in that Linda Jay from team “Pink Bits” had tagged the first Billfish of the competition, a Black Marlin. At the second sked Linda’s fish remained the only Billfish caught, although a couple more had been raised. The Billfish were proving difficult to find despite the fact that there were good patches of bait around Later that afternoon Team “Pink Bits” announced they had landed another Billfish, a Sailfish this time for angler Kylie Argent, and then jumped another one off. With just under an hour remaining a number of boats raced to where “Pink Bits” were fishing and trolled for the remainder of the day in an area a mile wide - all to no avail. When cease fishing was called at 5pm Team “Pink Bits” remained the only boat to catch Billfish that day and Linda and Kylie and their team of Duane and Groober

cleaned up all the Billfish awards on presentation night. The weigh-in began at 10am Sunday morning and one of the first fish to be weighed in was a massive 21.8kg Spanish Mackerel caught by Alana Schwertfeger. This fish eventually took out the heaviest Gamefish category, and closest to her was Andrea Kennedy in second place with a 12kg Tuna and a 6kg Mackerel for 18 points. Young Bella Raleigh took out the prize for heaviest junior Gamefish with a nice Mackerel. The majority of the fish weighed-in were Mackerel and Tuna. Sunday’s presentation ceremony was a cocktail party theme and it was great to see the teams make the effort to dress up for the night and get into the cocktail spirit, with the ladies looking very glamorous. A donation bucket was handed around for the McGrath Foundation with each donation receiving a ticket in the draw for the major prize from sponsor Sea Swift which was a trip for two aboard the Trinity Bay for five days from Cairns to Thursday Island and return. More than $2000 was raised for the McGrath Foundation. With presentations over it was time for the ladies and girls to let their hair down and enjoy the evening. There were some memorable sights over the course of the two days - some great rivalry amongst the teams and a lot of flashing from various boats (you know who you were, and I have evidence!); some interesting dance moves at the cocktail party and of course some nice fish weighed-in. Overall the competition has been a huge success and of course an event like this is not possible without sponsors. The Weipa Billfish Club would like to thank the following sponsors for their support with this competition: major sponsors - Sea Swift and Carpentaria Contracting; sponsors: Weipa Bowls Club, Weipa Auto & Marine, Weipa Tackle World, The Tinny Shack, Kym-Maree’s Beauty Room, Mo Tackle, Paul Lee Pushers, and Peter McCulkin. We would also like to thank Stretch and Giembra from the Western Cape Bulletin for their support in promoting the event and taking photos of the sail past and presentation evening, and Stretch for doing a fine job as MC at the awards night. Also Chris and Tania at the Bowls Club for providing the food, venue and service, and finally the following teams for their support and participation: Teaser Girls, Pink Bits, Humpin’ Hooters, Strippers, Fish ‘n’ Chicks, Bar’d up, Deadly Hunter Girls, Reel Action, Last Cast, Tag Team, Envy, C-Jay, Sproggets, Mumma Billies, Pink Busters, Pirates of the Cape, Billie Babes, Reel Therapy, Boat Mobile, Chinese Junk and – Frenchy Just Realty.
Bella Raleigh with club president Duane Singleton, was the junior champion angler with a nice Spanish Mackerel.
Alana from Team Chinese Junk earned herself the heaviest gamefish and most points prize with a 21.8kg Spanish Mackerel.
BIG DAY OUT: Champion boat award winners Team “Pink Bits” which included champion angler Linda (second from left) and runner-up Kylie (right) at the Weipa Billfish Club’s Ladies Fundraiser presentations. Linda and Kylie also picked up the first and last Billfish tagged awards respectively.
Team Stripper’s Andrea received the runnerup heaviest gamefish and runner-up heaviest gamefish points awards.
ALL DECKED OUT: Best dressed boat award winners Team Fish ‘n’ Chicks at Sunday’s presentation evening held at Weipa Bowls Club.
Winner of the hard luck award was Mick from Envee whose team was a late withdrawal due to a mechanical failure at the boat ramp.
Winner of the major raffle prize, a Sea Swift trip for two from Cairns to Thursday Island and return was Sheree Ailey.

ANOTHER weekend of hot and humid conditions couldn’t deter the hardy Weipa golfers from chasing the little white ball around the paddock in pursuit of their last chance in 2013 to get their name up in lights. WELL, I survived my trip to Cairns Hospital and with a few new stents in the heart I should be around for a while now, and thank you for all your well wishes. The weather has been up and down with the wet season taking hold but there have still been a few fish around both inshore and offshore. Last weekend saw the first of many ladies fundraiser competitions for the McGrath Foundation held and a great effort to have 21 boats entered. There is a more comprehensive report inside this edition but I take my hat off to the ladies that competed as the early morning conditions were not the greatest and they persevered until the conditions got better.

The cocktail party presentation was a blast and my congratulations go to the prize winners. I would also like to thank the sponsors of this event because without them there would be no comp, so support your local businesses. On the capture front there were some great fish caught on the troll with Alana’s 21.8 kg Spanish Mackerel, Linda’s 50kg Black Marlin along with numerous Longtail Tuna, Giant Trevally and a host of smaller Mackerel. Dylan Wilhelmi took Beau McCormick, Ortiz Hazel and Andrew Neep for a run up to Duyfken Point on Sunday and had a pretty rough time of it getting up there, but once around
the corner it calmed down a bit. The guys scored some Tuskers and Queenfish but had to deal with the ever-present Shark population, with Andrew getting stretched on a particularly large specimen. Up at Mapoon Meshek Gray and his cousins Avril and Leon Yeatman caught a large Spanish Mackerel trolling off the mouth of Mapoon. There are lots of big Queenies chasing the mullet schools just off the beaches and there are plenty of Milk Fish as well. In the rivers I haven’t heard much at all but the surface activity seen just off the loader wharf is unbelievable with fish busting up everywhere. The water in the rivers is pretty dirty with the run-off
from the rain but this can only be a good thing for things to come. The Mission River bridge was producing Bream and small Queenies during the day, and at night the Salmon come out to play on live bait. There should be some Mangrove Jacks and Cod in the creeks for the lure tossers and if you happen to get a Barra make sure it goes back in quickly unharmed. I need your reports so I can pass on the information to the readers so send them and your fishing photos to my e-mail address. ‘Til next week, smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. Cheers China
