ﬂights into Weipa in 2013 which will bring the number of passengers down under the 65,000 per annum thresh hold which is required to justify de-regulation.” Mr Noonan said as well Cape Alumina had pulled out of their tenement in the now strategic environment area which is part of the Wenlock River following the decision of the Newman Government. “Then the South of Embley project was scaled back. “Therefore, the flights for 2014 will be well below the numbers required for deregulation, although deregulation will come into

effect from January 1, 2015.” Mr Noonan said de-regulation will cause uncertainty in pricing as well as ﬂights. “It will affect people’s health including getting out to see specialists; getting out to have babies, connecting ﬂights for holidays, business etc. “There will be a whole range of areas which will be affected,” he said. Major carriers Virgin Airlines and Rex Aviation said they would review the situation following the announcement.  continued page 2

THE people of Weipa took to the polls last Saturday with a total of 428 votes cast both on the day and in pre-polling for the Weipa Town Authority by-election. With 160 votes Ian McNamara was elected chairperson and Tracey Jia (with 167 votes) has been elected the new member. Chief Executive Ofﬁcer and Returning Ofﬁcer Warren Seen, welcomed the new members into the WTA. “It is with great pleasure I announce the Weipa Town Authority’s new chairperson Ian McNamara and member Tracy Jia,” Mr Seen said. “It was great to see keen interest for pre-polling and an excellent turn out on polling day,” he said. “This displays the public are interested in

Cook MP David Kempton stated it was inevitable as demand for the services in locations such as Weipa and Horn Island grew, that these routes would be deregulated. “I will continue to watch the level of services and cost of airfares associated with this ﬂight and will work very closely with the local community to ensure the region is not disadvantaged,” he said. QantasLink has had a monopoly on these air routes and North Queensland Area Manager Matt Trevett-Lyall was being tight-lipped about the decision: “We will have to look at what’s been proposed and put all the facts together. A spokesperson from Qantas said: “Qantas will continue to provide vital air services to our loyal customers in these communities. Qantas has proven to be the airline of choice on contested regional routes around Australia which is due to our exceptional service, leading on time performance, connections and frequencies to domestic and international destinations, as well as our market leading frequent ﬂyer program.” Virgin Airlines have expressed

an interest in these routes in the past and a spokesperson from the airline said: “We are reviewing our options in terms of route expansion in light of the Government’s announcement.” Spokesperson from Rex Airlines said: “Rex’s decision to operate any of the mentioned routes post de-regulation would be a normal commercial decision and would also be subject to QantasLink’s future intentions in regards to maintaining services on these routes post de-regulation.” Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said last week: “We are a government that is working to revitalise frontline services, as promised at the election, and this decision will remove red tape for the airline industry and achieve that.” “From 2015, when the existing contracts end, three routes will be opened up to commercial competition so the market can set the best price and service levels. All other routes will go out to tender. “We’ll continue to monitor patronage on these routes with the option to re-regulate if we feel the airlines aren’t delivering for regional communities,” Mr Emerson said.

Be wary around drains in the wet THE recent monsoonal weather trough has tested Rocky Point drainage works completed by the Weipa Town Authority in 2013. The drains have remained unblocked during the “wet season” and flowed without major incident, pooling or flooding. Drainage maintenance has also been carried out at Trunding and areas of Nanum. Now “The Wet” is here, this high volume of water means faster flowing drains and flooding can occur fairly readily. With the unpredictability of the rain the WTA are warning about the dangers posed by flood waters and remind the community to be diligent with safety precautions around drains. Children especially should be supervised. Don’t be complacent, be cautious. We recommend drivers of vehicles take all precautions in heavy rain periods. Although the drains flow well you can get a buildup of debris on the drain heads which can cause some minor flooding. During storms the WTA Parks and Gardens team progressively remove debris from drain heads to achieve better water flow capacity. Also remember that whatever goes into the drains travels into our water-ways. To protect our ecosystem on the Cape, think about what you put into the drains. No chemicals, motor oils or obstacles that will block the drains. The Clean Away Depot at the Weipa Landfill will collect some hazardous chemicals. that the Government has decided to go ahead with the payment of approximately $880 million to Mr Murdoch. All cabinet members are agreed that this is the right thing to do, and we would not dream of challenging him in the courts – even if we could afford the lawyers. We have written to Mr Murdoch and told him the cheque is in the post. The Minister understands that there has been some confusion as to why the ATO has reversed its normal policy of charging people and corporations as much tax as it can wring out of them. The Minister would like to make it clear that this gift is a special case, and taxes will continue to be levied as normal on the rest of the Australian community, on a slightly more generous scale than last year, as buying off Mr Murdoch has left rather a hole in the budget. As to why the payment has become necessary, the Minister’s ﬁnancial advisers

Apunipima midwives win scholarship Five midwives have been given an opportunity to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Screening, Diagnostics, Pharmacology and Prescribing for Midwives from Griffith University, thanks to an $18,750 scholarship from the Australian Government’s Department of Health, administered by the Australian College of Nursing. Midwives who successfully complete their Certificate as well as a Midwifery Peer Review process become eligible to obtain Medicare provider numbers, prescribe limited, appropriate medicine, organise referrals and order obstetric ultrasounds for their clients. “We are excited and honoured to have won the Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship,” Apunipima Maternal and Child

Health Team Program Manager Rachel Sargeant said. “This qualification will enable us to provide a more complete service to the women of Cape York. Currently only General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners can conduct blood tests, provide referrals and prescribe medicines. Eligible midwives can also offer these services, meaning remote pregnant women can get referrals and prescriptions regardless of whether a GP/NP is available in their community. Federal inquiry into the harmful use of alcohol in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities THe House of Representatives Standing Committee on indigenous Affairs has announced an inquiry into the harmful use of alcohol in Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities. NACCHO Chair Justin Mohamed said the NACCHO secretariat will be working closely with its 150 members to make sure the role of Aboriginal Community Controlled health is recognised in any future long-term plans and recommendations as identified in NATSIHP the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health plan 2013-2023. The Chair of the Committee, Dr Sharman Stone, said: “The Committee is not singling out Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander people as the only group that have problems with alcohol. “We know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more likely to abstain from alcohol than non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “However we are concerned that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who do consume alcohol, drink at riskier levels which has a greater impact on their health.” Dr Stone said: “While there is no doubt that alcohol abuse has a significant impact on families and communities right across Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are between four and five times more likely to be hospitalised, and between five and eight times

MeMber for Cook, David Kempton, has announced that the State Government will commit $10m towards the sealing of the Peninsula Development road. The announcement was made at the Cooktown and Cape York business Conference held at Cooktown on February 20 which I attended. Whilst this $10m is most welcome it falls well short of the $40m pledged by Premier Campbell Newman last year as part of his government’s co-contribution towards the then Federal Labor government’s $210m Infrastructure allocation for Cape York communities. Under current Queensland Government road costings it takes $1.75m to bitumen 1km of road in Cape York and this would mean the Mr Kempton’s announced $10m would seal a little under 6km of the PDR. It’s time for Mr Kempton to provide some clarity to Cape York communities as to whether or not the Queensland Government will stay true to its $40m pledge to the Cape’s most important road. Extra boost for key Cape York road I woulD like to congratulate the Queensland Government for its $10 million investment in Cape York, which will enable further sealing of the Peninsula Development road. Together with the $210 million pledged – and set aside – by the Federal Government in December, it will help to provide greater economic, social and environmental benefits for the region. However, I would like to correct inaccurate statements made by the ALP candidate for the seat of Cook, Billy Gordon, which I can only describe as “totally wrong”. Billy Gordon has obviously been listening to former Infrastructure

Minister Anthony Albanese. Premier Newman never pledged $40 million towards Cape York infrastructure, and our $210 million was never dependant on a State Government contribution. When Albanese made his commitment back in June 2013 there were three key elements that he overlooked – firstly, he had not consulted with community leaders, secondly, he had not consulted with the Queensland Premier, and thirdly, he’d clearly not consulted with his own Treasury, because there was never any money attached to the project. What we’ve done with the support of Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss is identified where the money will come from and the $210 million is available as soon as the relevant planning works and contracts are undertaken. I am absolutely committed to working closely with Cook MP David Kempton and Cape York leaders to ensure that the funding package is targeted to the areas of most need. At the forum with David Kempton last month we both committed to doing what the Labor Party hasn’t done, and that’s consult with the community to identify priorities. Our funding is not conditional on State Government funding, and David should be commended for his efforts in securing an additional $10 million for the PDR. I would also dispute Mr Gordon’s claim that $10 million would only seal 6km of the PDR. At the forum there was a very good presentation by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, which identified that the cost of sealing varies greatly depending on whether it’s a relatively flat, straightforward section, a steep and windy range, or it includes culverts and bridges. Ultimately, it comes down to community priorities and how they want the money spent. I have no doubt, given David’s strong advocacy and commitment to his region, he will continue to deliver – I’d anticipate that this could be the first tranche of funding, with more to come in the years ahead. Joint initiative to target feral pigs Feral pigs will be targeted under a joint State and Federal Government initiative to aid marine turtle recovery and continue the war on pests. The Australian and Queensland Governments will jointly invest up to $7 million to help reduce the threat to marine turtle nests from feral pigs and protect Queensland’s iconic turtle populations both now and into the future. The Australian Government will match the Queensland Government’s investment of $3.5 million over the next four years. The Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area is home to three endangered turtle species. Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said this program will help protect turtle eggs, hatchlings and habitat along the Queensland coast. “Feral pig predation

of turtle nests is one of the main threats facing marine turtle populations in Queensland. They prey on the eggs of our olive ridley, flatback, loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. Finding a way to stop this destruction of turtle nests is an important priority for both our Governments,” Mr Hunt said. “In some areas along the coast up to 90 per cent of turtle nests are lost to predation by feral pigs. “Of greatest concern, and a priority for the Australian Government, is the protection of turtle populations nesting on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. “Turtle populations at most risk in these areas are the western Cape York populations of the olive ridley turtle, listed as ‘Endangered’ and the flatback turtle, which is currently listed as ‘Vulnerable’,” Mr Hunt said.

The Cape York Turtle and Dugong Task Force and Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation have applauded the State and Federal Governments for joining forces to help protect Cape York’s iconic turtle population. The Task Force and Balkanu have worked vigorously over the last two years to develop a sustainable turtle and dugong protection policy. Established in 2011 the Task Force represents 28 salt-water groups on Cape York. Hundreds of meetings and workshops with traditional owners have taken place, resulting in the release in October 2013 of the Cape York Turtle and Dugong Strategy. The Strategy contains sub-

regional and local plans for the management of turtles and dugongs, including a number of projects to secure and sustain future populations. Amongst other measures, the projects include rectification of the collapse of the Raine Island rookery; preventing pig predation of turtle nesting sites, local hunting moratoriums, catch limits and the support of Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation centres. Task Force Chairman Robbie Deemal welcomed the commitment of both governments to eradicate the threats to Cape York’s turtle population. He said the Task Force’s Strategy document should become the governments’ blueprint for future action. “The Turtle and Dugong task force is committed to continuing to help facilitate this important work, and we thank both governments for recognising the need to act,” Deemal said. “However there is much still to be done, and we look forward to working with the governments to ensure that the way forward outlined in the Task Force’s Strategy document, developed by Cape York traditional owners, is implemented.”

The Red Cross’ Wellbeing Centre, Pat Gosper Place, on Lake Street in Cairns is a 44-room facility offering accommodation and support to people from rural and remote areas who have travelled to Cairns for medical treatment. The Red Cross’ Wellbeing Centre on Lake Street in Cairns will provide a safe place for recovery. Senator Jan McLucas congratulated the Red Cross and the local health community for bringing this project to fruition. “Congratulations to Red Cross and the local health community for bringing this project to fruition,” Senator McLucas said. “There is demand in our community for such a facility so it is reassuring to know people from some of the most remote parts of the Far North will have a safe, comfortable place they can call home after they receive their medical treatment in Cairns.” Senator McLucas also paid tribute to local legend Pat Gosper who the centre has been named after. “While the Far North Community celebrates the opening of this important facility, it is

Serious assault charge, Rocky Point Police charged a man following investigations into a serious assault at Rocky Point on Sunday night. It is alleged that around 9pm, two men were involved in an altercation in the car park of a golf club on Tom Morrison Drive when one man was struck in the face with a glass. A 17-year-old man sustained a large laceration to his neck and was transported to Weipa Hospital for treatment. Police have charged a 20-yearold local man with assault occasioning bodily harm and he will appear in Weipa Magistrates Court on March 11.

coNStable Natalie Fowler was honoured to be invited as the first guest speaker at the local Kowanyama women’s church group by the ministers wife, Val. Natalie was asked to speak about her life and the challenges she’s had to overcome whilst peforming Police duties in general as well as in remote indigenous communities. Natalie was able to discuss a wide range of issues with the women and talked about what inspired her to join the Police force as well as her daily duties as a first response officer. She also pointed out to the group, that Police Officers are the same as everyone else, we aren’t excused from the law and

that we not only have to abide by it, we are held accountable to a higher authority as well. “Whilst it was a pretty informal chat, we talked about a wide range of topics and I’m pretty sure I was able to break down some barriers and forge a stronger relationship with the women in my community,” Constable Fowler said. “The ladies asked a lot of questions and I’m hoping that I was able to give them an insight into what it’s like to be a Police Officer as well as some of the problems we face.” “Val and the ladies were quite appreciative of my willingness to join in with the group and thanked me for my time.”

news Who to call if you have poor mobile phone service People in rural and remote areas who have poor mobile phone service are encouraged to make their case known to the Department of Communications – and encourage their local Council to become involved. The Federal Government has set aside $100 million for a Mobile Coverage Programme to improve mobile phone coverage, including in mobile black spots. The money is to be invested in telecommunications network infrastructure to improve both coverage of high quality terrestrial mobile voice and wireless broadband services in rural and remote Australia, and competition in the provision of such services.

People living in rural and remote areas and entities such as local Councils should ensure that their local black spot or reception anomaly is known to the Department, so that it may be included in one or both parts of the Mobile Coverage Programme. The $80 million Mobile Network Expansion Project is to improve mobile coverage along major transport routes, in small communities and in areas that are prone to experiencing natural disasters. This $80 million will be provided to one or more of the three mobile network operators (Optus, Telstra and Vodafone) to deliver services to communities identified on a list of locations that currently receive

poor, or no, mobile coverage. People in rural areas should read the Department’s Discussion Paper and encourage their local Council to engage with the plans for the expenditure of the $80 million if your mobile coverage is poor. If you, or they have a preference for the way the mobile network operators are involved in the expansion project, write in to support whichever of the three proposed plans you think will be best. The $20 million Mobile Black Spots Project is to improve mobile coverage in locations with unique coverage problems, such as areas with high demand for services during seasonal holiday periods.

If your local area is not included in plans for the expenditure of the $80 million, you can put in an expression of interest to provide a cocontribution to a local solution (through establishment of a mobile base station). Details about the Programme, including how to make a submission, can be found at www.communications. gov.au/mobile Submissions can be emailed or posted and must be with the Department by February 28. More home ownership opportunities for Indigenous communities Indigenous communities will now have greater opportunities for home ownership in Queensland with new laws coming into effect this week. Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Holding Act 2013 would resolve glitches in the now repealed Land Holding Act 1985, which prevented one third of applications from being finalised. “The State Government is removing the barriers that prevent sustainable home ownership opportunities for Indigenous communities,” Mr Cripps said. “While the 1985 Act was the first step in delivering homeownership in Indigenous communities, it contained inadequacies which hindered the delivery of important social housing, the

transfer of land and home ownership in Indigenous communities. “Since the previous Act commenced, there have been just 238 granted leases out of 625 known applications, with 208 applications approved but never finalised. “The new Act protects and continues previously granted leases and lease entitlements and provides the necessary tools to resolve outstanding issues, including clarifying residential and infrastructure boundaries. “By finalising the outstanding lease entitlements, we will be able to deliver more Indigenous home ownership and promote social housing and commercial development in Indigenous communities.” Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs

Minister Glen Elmes said greater flexibility in land transaction and home ownership are important steps towards addressing Indigenous disadvantage. “The provision of freehold land isn’t a solution in itself, but is part of a wider strategy to address entrenched disadvantage within Indigenous communities and will support job creation and economic growth,” Mr Elmes said. “The State Government is committed to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders have the same opportunities afforded to all other Queenslanders, and that includes home ownership. “Resolving the complication and unwieldy tenure arrangements in the Deed of Grant in Trust communities is a significant step, together with educa-

More Indigenous recruiting officers join Army ranks THE Australian Army has appointed eight new Indigenous recruiting officers to support Indigenous candidates throughout the recruiting process and help boost numbers across the service. The soldiers, who rank from Lance Bombadier to Warrant Officer Class One, were appointed recently by the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison, AO with the aim of better engaging new recruits. The recruiting officers will be based in Brisbane, To w n s v i l l e , S y d n e y,

Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide. Another two Indigenous Mentors will be posted to the Army Recruit Training Centre at the Kapooka Army Base near Wagga Wagga, NSW, to support Indigenous recruits through their basic training. Newly appointed Indigenous recruiting officer Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Ken Nelliman, said the appointments were a fantastic initiative. “As a Torres Strait Islander, I have no doubt there are many Indigenous men and women out there

who could do very well in Defence,” WO1 Nelliman said. “This initiative will strive to improve numbers of Indigenous personnel in the Australian Army, in what is already a strong, diverse organisation.” With the team officially appointed and welcomed by the Chief of Army, their task now lies ahead to engage the Indigenous communities in their respective locations. “The team is very capable, ready and keen to get out there and do our job,” WO1 Nelliman said.

Surprising research reveals four crocodiles species can climb high into trees. From Australian Geographic . . . WHEN it comes to avoiding a potentially fatal croc encounter in Australia’s Top End, most people would have their eyes on the water – but have you ever thought to look up? Crocodiles are already known for impressive speed and agility around the water, but a new study published this week shows they are also capable of climbing trees. “Nobody who has ever witnessed a freshwater crocodile run in a galloping gait would ever suspect them capable of such agility [in the trees], yet they are skilled at it,” says Dr Adam Britton, study co-author at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, NT. Crocodiles basking in trees The research, led by Dr Vladimir Dinets at the University of Tennessee in the USA, is the first to focus on climbing behaviours of crocodilians, a group also including alligators, caimans and gharials. The scientists confirmed that four different crocodile species – found in Australia, Africa and the Americas – are all able to climb, some as high as 4m, where they were observed basking in trees. Climbing abilities vary by

species and also by size. Small, lightweight crocs, primarily juveniles less than 1.5m long, are able to reach the highest branches, while larger individuals are usually found on lower perches, no more than a metre above the water. Australia’s freshwater crocodile can climb steep slopes, such as those along riverbanks, which saltwater crocodiles would have more trouble with. “Hatchlings of both species...can even climb vertical brickwork, which is the cause of occasional crocodile farm escapes,” Adam told Australian Geographic. Crocodiles climb to survey territory In addition to basking in the sun, wild reptiles may be using the perches to survey their territory. He argues that “crocs may be gaining height for surveillance purposes to look for predators, prey and other crocodiles that are competitors.” People have little to worry about regarding attacks from above, though. In most cases, particularly during the day, the researchers found that the crocs were skittish and would rapidly slide off branches into the water when approached. Professor Grahame Webb,

a biologist and founder of Crocodylus Park in Darwin, says the findings are intriguing, but adds that he’s never seen any saltwater or freshwater crocodiles climbing trees in the way goannas and iguanas do. “I have difficulty even imagining a crocodile several metres up in a mangrove,” he says. Clues from extinct crocodiles The finding may have implications for the study of extinct animals from fossils, as little about the skeletons of living crocodiles suggests that they have climbing ability. Dr Paul Willis, director of the Royal Institute of Australia, in Adelaide, is a palaeontologist who published research on the possibility of extinct treedwelling crocodiles in the 1990s. He says that the idea was met with bemusement at the time, so the new finding is a pleasant surprise. “I was tickled to see new research addressing the possibility that now-extinct crocodile species could climb,” he says. Adam agrees that the study “reminds us that living creatures may use their physical structures in surprising ways, expanding our thinking about...the capabilities of extinct species.”

Increased funding for Indigenous men MEN’S support services in Far North Queensland Indigenous communities are set to receive a much needed boost thanks to a new $2 million State Government funding initiative. David Kempton, Member for Cook, said applications were now open for the new funding which would deliver support services to help tackle health and wellbeing issues, including reducing alcohol-related harm in communities including Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Napranum, and Pormpuraaw. “The rates of assaults and domestic and family violence are well above the state average in Indigenous communities,” Mr Kempton said. “Alcohol can be one of the primary causes of much of this violence and often there are no alternate services available like the ones you find in major cities.”

Mr Kempton said the services would provide face-to-face counselling to help people improve personal relationships, build emotional resilience and selfreliance. “The men’s support services will also provide case management along with information, advice and referral for better health,” he said. “This funding will assist those men requiring support, address the underlying issues that cause them to abuse alcohol and in the long-term, help cut the rate of harm in some of our most remote communities.” Non-government organisations are encouraged to apply for a share of the funding and for more information www. communities.qld.gov.au<http://www. communities.qld.gov.au>. Phone scam targets Indigenous communities A prominent northern territory author, who has spent much of his life in remote Australia, believes an international phone scam is affecting indigenous communities throughout Australia. riCHArD trUDGen reports on how the scam has cost some people in Arnhem Land all their money and sent businesses broke. He warns communities to be careful . . . BeFORe Christmas, 2013, I received a phone call from a Yolngu person who wanted me to make a transfer of many thousands of dollars into asia. All the lights went on for me and, after a number of days investigating it was clear that a large phone scam was operating out of Asia, targeting Yolngu people in Arnhem Land. The scam had been going on unnoticed by the authorities for well over 12 months. Many Yolngu people have lost a lot of money and had their lives thrown in to turmoil because of it. One family is broke and had to close their store on their small community because of it. Their closest store is two hours away by four-wheeldrive. The complex scam used financial accounts of some Yolngu individuals as central accounts in which to hide the money trail, and then transferred the money from these accounts via Western Union to the scammers in Asia. The scam includes a Balanda Australian, or someone with a strong Australian accent. They also seem to have local knowledge as to whom would be good to target in first case. This person seems to have done considerable social profiling on two or three key Yolngu families. That is they know a lot about the family and have some

special story that would only be know by a handful of outsiders. So it was easy for this Balanda to gain the trust of the Yolngu involved as he knew so much about them, even their name and the names of close relatives. The scam involves advising the Yolngu people that they have large sums of money that belongs to the family - $80,000 or a million dollars - and that they will help them get the money for them. This person even uses his alleged wife and children to talk to the Yolngu as part of getting them on side. When he has their trust he obtains bank account details including their passwords and access codes. It then seems that he uses these bank account/s to move money they have scammed off other Yolngu people to themselves somewhere in Asia.

If it sounds suspicious ignore it Queensland Police Inspector for the Torres strait and nPa, david lacey said that although there has not been any reports of similar scams happening in the region, that people should be wary of suspicious phone calls and emails. “The general rule of thumb is if it sounds suspicious ignore it, and if you do not know the person do not respond,” Inspector Lacey said. These other Asians then ring other Yolngu to tell scam stories about monies won or inheritances/superannuation/ government funds found. When their trust is won the scammers also get their account numbers and passwords which they later use to rip them off. The Yolngu with the central accounts do not know that other Yolngu have been putting money into their account and so they think it is from the Balanda. At the same time this Balanda rings them up and tells them that he put the money in their account and how much it was. Then he asks them to transfer the money to him by using Western Union. When the Yolngu ask why, he says that he just put the money in their account to prove

The money is always sent to different people at different addresses in India and other places in Asia. I have been working with Lahyna Money Management and they have given me some help to produce programs for Yolngu Radio. I was able to get one series of radio programs produced before Christmas and get the story out. At the moment I am working on another more extensive series of programs to shed light on the issue. This is the first time many Yolngu have experienced such a thing so they have been caught out badly. Programs broadcast on Yolngu Radio will provide information on how scams operate and how to protect themselves their families and financial details from such things. There is little doubt that this scam is happening in Aboriginal communities right across Australia.

JeWish people from all over the world were astounded to hear ordinary Galileans speaking in their particular language, as these Galileans had their own rough local language and they were all were praising God for his wonderful deeds. To others who did not hear their language being spoken this sounded like babbling and so they said that the people were drunk. Peter said that couldn’t be as the pubs were not open yet. Yet strange and powerful events of the Holy Spirit “falling down” on people from above was something that happened to the Jewish people before as they travelled through life with God. It followed with the outward signs

more marooned on foot travelling to the field, with Mulligan receiving unfair criticism for their unfortunate plight. By 1875, Mulligan, again acting as a catalyst, was promoting the number of gold bearing reefs along the Palmer and was fore-shadowing the move from alluvial to deep reef mining. In 1876, Mulligan made further gold discoveries, this time on the Hodgkinson River, south of the Palmer. Although Mulligan stressed that this new field was mainly a deep reef field, another rush ensued. Many of these miners were ill equipped and soon found themselves in trouble, with many again unfairly blaming Mulligan, as having over stated the ease with which gold could be obtained. Changing direction somewhat and looking towards business, Mulligan opened the first store on the field. James Mulligan was also the first to find payable tin in Queensland and, in 1880, silver, both in the Herbert River area. Marrying in 1903, James Mulligan bought and operated the Mount Molloy Hotel.

Striking start to the soccer season

What a fantastic start to the Soccer season. the players keenly arrived with big smiles and lots of enthusiasm which made for some fun and highscoring games. The first two weeks of trial games have been held the last two Saturday mornings, although the weather was a little hot and humid the first week. However a little drizzle cooled things down for the second. The trial games allow the coaches to assess player skill and ensure teams are evenly balanced making for a competitive season. The highlight of the season commencement has been the visit from Alex Smith, an elite football player and coach. As he has experience in so many areas of the great game of soccer Alex ran an informative grassroots coaching clinic for parents/carers and assisted the coaches’ soccer skills clinics for our players. We now have some skilled up coaches, eager to teach our up-and-coming soccer stars, not to mention the improvement in our players’ skills. Alex treated the participating players with some amazing ball tricks after all their hard work. Remember kids - you can follow in Alex’s footsteps with lots of practice and patience! For more information about soccer star Alex Smith refer to page 20 for our own soccer star Kyle Hunter’s interview. In addition Angelo Capaldi, a very experienced referee, ran game

leader and referee courses which were well attended, and has given our refs much more knowledge and confidence. A big thank you to Alex, Angelo and Brent (media extraordinaire) from FNQ Football for making the journey to Weipa to assist our club. Well done also to all our committee, coaches, game leaders, refs and fabulous players for making it such a great weekend. Coaching sessions will commence Monday at the WCC Soccer Grounds. Squirts, Tykes and Teens from 4 to 5pm, and Titans from 5 to 6pm. A reminder for Saturday games – all players must be in uniform – black shorts, black club socks worn over shin pads, soccer boots or sandshoes, and a floppy broad brim hat. Team jerseys will be handed out shortly, once teams have been finalised. Also please remember your sunscreen, water bottle, manners and be ready for lots of fun! Game start times are Squirts and Teens 9am, Tykes and Titans 10am. Players, please ensure you arrive 20 minutes prior to your game to ensure a sharp kick-off. Thank you to all the wonderful parents/carers who are assisting the committee in one way or another – every little bit helps. You are appreciated and your help ensures a successful soccer season for our players. Golf Notes with Clarkey

Well, as promised in our last column the 2014 Gumboot Classic was played last Sunday. The course and the weather lived up to the reputation that goes hand in hand with the playing of this event at this time of the year. The ground was a little mushy in some areas while in others it was downright wet, but for the most part the course is in good shape. The rain also came out to play late in the day so overall the Gumboot was played in the true sense of the word. A great field of 20-odd players slogged their way around the course and surprisingly some very good scores were returned. Beautiful trophies were supplied by our long time sponsors Janey and Shane Brown and the club thanks them for their support once again. The winner of the Gumboot Classic was none other than the inconsistent

golfer come writer of this column Peter Clarke, who actually hit the mown fairways in fear of getting wet feet in the roughs. An 80 off the stick for a nett 65 by Clarkey was enough to hold out Fay Abraham who scored a really fine 69 nett to take out the runners-up trophy on a countback from Pete Ross. Nearest the pins for the day on the 9th was Jordan while Andrew was nearest on the 15th. Newmy got to within 2.3 metres on the 18th hole. Remember next Saturday is the Golf /Bowls day for the Squires Family so names in at the clubs where you can also make inquiries about how to get a game. No great experience required for this fun day. Motocross riders brave the rain

Troy and Cameron do a little bit of cleaning at Saturday’s motocross come and try day.

Saturday saw the Cape york Motorcycle Club hold a come and try day, where participants new to motocross got to ride the track absolutely free of charge. With riders arriving, it was clear that dust wasn’t going to be a problem. With around 45 participants signedin, there was plenty of fun to be had and riders managed to ride with minimum spills. Tyler Kowalski rode back to the pits with his new “mud monster look” after sitting behind a few of the lads and copping plenty of roost. Cameron Small managed to get out in front of everyone (trying to keep his flash riding gear clean) and avoid some roost until his 450 decided it wanted to go bush. The senior boys made the track all but un-rideable after only a couple of hit-outs, so the decision was made to create a new loop of the track for the juniors. Without hesitation, the junior guys flew out of the pits and off they went. The young fellas showed plenty of skill given the trying conditions, and loved the new version of the track. Troye Fay put on a great display

of ‘scrubbing’ jumps, even if it was unintentional. A couple of the new riders also showed plenty of talent and will be great to watch come race day in May. Big congratulations and thanks to all who stuck it out in pretty poor conditions, hopefully we will catch a break in the weather soon. We will be holding a coaching day on Saturday, March 8 for the juniors, with the senior guys getting the opportunity to ride also. These coaching days are essential in teaching valuable skills and completing the Junior Kickstart Logbook, which is essential for juniors to apply for a race licence. Say “no” to soft drink at weekend sport CanCer Council Queensland has backed the Queensland Government’s push for a ban on soft drink sales at children’s sporting events, in a move to combat growing rates of childhood obesity. Chief health officer Jeanette Young is urging parents to call on sports club committees to ban soft drinks at weekend sport, saying consumption after a game reinforces great behavior with bad nutrition. Around 27 per cent of Queensland children (aged five to 17) are currently overweight or obese, with the figure expected to rise as the state’s obesity crises worsens. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said many parents didn’t realise the amount of sugar in a standard can of soft drink, and what effect that could have on their child’s health. “One can of soft drink alone can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar, and many Queenslanders think it’s acceptable to have one can a day – it isn’t,” Ms Clift said. “It’s not just soft drinks that are a concern – beverages like energy drinks,

fruit drinks, cordial and sports drinks contain large amounts of ‘hidden’ sugar. “The consumption of these sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with serious health issues such as weight gain and obesity – which can lead to some cancers, Type 2 diabetes and heart problems. “While obesity is caused by a range of complex factors, we know that eating a healthy diet and limiting sugary, fatty and salty food and drinks is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy weight.” Around 16 per cent of children aged 5-17 years consume non-diet soft drink and non-diet flavoured drinks at least daily*. Cancer Council is calling on Queensland parents to

support their children as role models by reducing their personal consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Obesity rates for Queensland adults have doubled in the last 16 years. rod, no more than 10kg line class, and keep your rod at no more than 30 degrees as this stops the Grunter feeling any pressure from the rod strength. Last of all, use fresh bait and sharp hooks and long leaders. A lot of Grunter are hooked deep in their throats they have a habit of inhaling your bait and crushing it in their grinders deep in their throats. A lot of anglers can feel this habit travel up their line just like a telegraph, especially when using braid on graphite rods. You all would have heard the noise they make when you bring them aboard. As I said before, fresh baits are the go. You might laugh but slabs of Catfish, Milkfish, and Tarpon are delicacies to Grunter and most other fish, but remember to bone out all the belly bones. As can be expected Barra are being caught in most structured areas like bridges and rock bars but don’t discount the mangrove’s edges as they will school up on the flats, especially if there are bait schools they can feed on. Move slowly and quietly and you can usually sight cast to them. Don’t be afraid to cast live baits at them but don’t use a sinker as the livie won’t act naturally if hindered by one. Best lures are the ones that work so there are thousands. Try Gold Bombers, B52s, ZMans Shad (white), Zerek Prawns, and Killalure Poppers. Low tide is the best time and before the sun is a couple hours

Another week of paradise and still seeing plenty of rain. I heard that if we have another 100mm we would have had the best wet since 1993. If I am wrong let me know, as being a fisherman I don’t want people saying I stretch the truth. The Billfish Club had a breakfast on the beach at Gonbung last weekend, and those that couldn’t make it - you missed out. We all had a bit of a flick and got onto a few Queenies, and one quality Grunter. It was a great morning, overcast and a few little showers to keep it cool even at noon. We will have to do it again real soon. I have been copping a bit of flack about the Grunter, with some anglers saying they can’t seem to find any, and yet other anglers telling me they are doing quite well. Here are a few tips... First, limit the amount of lead you are using to just enough to get you to the bottom and not anchor you there, as Grunter will drop your bait if they feel any resistance. Second, use as light a line as you can handle, say 6-8kg, (many a Bill Fish tournament on the East Coast are 6kg comps) because Grunter can feel your line through the water. If using braid, for that matter mono as well, put a couple of rubber bands on your rods for grip before you put your reel on, so as to trap the braid or mono under them with the bail open. Third, use a very soft tipped

FNQ soccer star visits Weipa ELEVEN year-old, Year 6 Western Cape College student, Kyle Hunter prepared this special report for The Western Cape Bulletin . . . I AM Kyle Hunter and I am a Titan at the Weipa Junior Soccer Club. On the weekend I had the privilege to interview Alex Smith, a professional soccer player, who has played for the A league and is currently playing for FNQ FC, a new football club representing Far North Queensland in the National Premier League (NPL) called Heat. Kyle: Alex have you enjoyed your time in Weipa so far? Alex: Yeah, it’s been good to show everyone some skills and see a new town, and hopefully I can pass on a few things to you guys. Kyle:Would you like to come back to Weipa again? Alex: Yeah deﬁnitely, it’s a great town and I would like to see how the kids have improved. Kyle: I understand you were born in England, grew up in America, so what brought you to Australia? Alex: Surprisingly not soccer. highlight for me. I have also played against David Beckham, Joe Hart and Ashley Young. Kyle: I have read that you have played for many professional teams, so which have you enjoyed the most? Alex: Probably the ﬁrst team I played for, FC Dallas, just because it was a fresh start and everything was new to me. Also experiencing how to make money out of soccer, so that was pretty cool. Kyle: What would be your favourite moment scoring a goal?

Alex: Obviously the goal in the A League meant quite a bit to me, especially as I had done a lot to get there after quitting a couple of times. Also I scored a goal for Sydney Olympic when I was about forty metres out, so that was quiet remarkable. I’ve had a few in my earlier days, but those two were more recent. Kyle: So what does 2014 hold for you? Alex: Hopefully a NPL title and a contract in the A league somewhere. Kyle: What will you do after

your soccer career is ﬁnished? Alex: I am a pretty keen photographer, so looking forward to that later in life, but I’m only twenty eight so we’ll see what happens. It was really great having Alex here in Weipa and we hope someone like him can come up again.
