Tasty meal for Pennefather croc

WEIPA man Max Walters just happened to be in the “right place at the right time” to snap this photo of a crocodile snacking on a green turtle on Pennefather Beach last Sunday. “It’s the sort of photo everyone else gets,” Max said. “My wife saw the croc burst out of the water onto the sand with the turtle in its mouth and we just couldn’t believe what we were witnessing.”

Max estimated the crocodile to be more than four-metres long and said the turtle was approximately half a metre across the shell. “I took dozens of photos trying to get just the right shot, which was difﬁcult with the movement of the water. NANUM WUNGTHIM Rangers are monitoring turtles nesting at Pennefather Beach from Pennefather River to the Pine River in the South. A large crocodile was seen feeding on a green turtle on Sunday by Max Walters and the Rangers observed a green turtle being eaten on Monday. Matt Gills Environmental Scientist and Nanum Wungithm Ranger Coordinator from the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council said crocodiles are opportunist and will take any prey when it comes their way. “This green turtle might have been attempting to nest on the beach and was preyed upon by the crocodile,” Mr Gillis said. On a recent patrol by the Nanum Wungthim Rangers they recorded two ﬂat back turtles, an Olive Ridley turtle and a Green Turtle nesting along the beach. The Rangers have placed barriers and markers alongside the nests to reduce impacts of vehicles driving along the beach. The Rangers monitor the site for predation

news WTA HEALTH ADVICE DENGUE fever is on the increase in Cairns and the Weipa Town Authority is encouraging locals to take precautions when travelling in the Far North region. Although dengue mosquitoes have not been found in Weipa to date, mosquitoes generally are on the rise due to the increased wet season rain in the area. As such, the Weipa Town Authority is encouraging all residents to take precautions. Weipa Town Authority’s Director of Infrastructure and Planning, Joan Stratton, asks that all residents be vigilant in protecting themselves from being bitten by mosquitos and potentially contracting a variety of mosquito-borne diseases. “There are recorded cases of Ross River Fever and Barmah Forest viruses in Weipa,” Ms Stratton said. All mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, are spread to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. There is no vaccine for Queensland’s mosquito-borne diseases, with the exception of Japanese encephalitis. “Queensland Health has warned that it is important to avoid mosquito bites at dawn and dusk, and especially during the day,’’ Ms Stratton said. “If you experience any dengue-like symptoms such as a rash, fever, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, muscle

These are classed as container breeding sites and are a haven for mosquitoes to breed in, particularly mosquitos which cause mosquito-borne diseases”. WTA’s interim CEO, Wa r r e n S e e n w a r n s residents that mosquitoes can breed in even small amounts of water. “One small pond of water can breed thousands of mosquitoes each week. It is important to remove all potential breeding sites within your home as some types of mosquitoes won’t travel far from their breeding sites to feed,” Mr Seen said. Strategies for avoiding contraction and controlling potential breeding sites around the home include: • Use indoor surface insecticide spray. Dengue mosquitoes like to inhabit dark places, so spray places such as under tables and in wardrobes. • Wear insect repellent, especially during the day. It is a fact that dengue mosquitoes like to bite during the daytime, and live around homes, not swamps or rivers. • Remove weeds and grass from drains to enable them to drain freely • Keep roof guttering in good repair • Dispose of all tins, tyres, tarpaulins, black plastic and other rubbish containers that may hold water • Put sand around bases of pot plants to absorb excess water in the dish • Overturn boats and dinghies or remove the drain plug so they do not hold water • Drill holes in tyres used for swings, playgrounds and garden surrounds to allow water to drain

• Prevent leaking taps which can maintain semi-permanent pools • Keep roof guttering in good repair and regularly remove leaves and debris so that pools of water do not form • Keep lawns and gardens well maintained so that you are not providing shelter for adult mosquitoes • Remove fallen palm fronds and other garden materials which have the potential to pond water • Install or repair fly screens on all windows and rain water tanks and place self-closing wire screens on doors • Empty flower vases, pot plants, (red attracts mosquitoes), bird baths, pets’ drinking water and other receptacles that hold water at least once a week • Check swimming pools chlorination or salt levels with increases in rain • Keep fish ponds stocked with fish

THE newly elected members for the Weipa Town Authority Bi-Election have been sworn into their roles and are ready to get moving. Ian McNamara was sworn in as Chairperson, and Tracey Jia has been sworn in as the new Member. The new Chairperson said that he is keen to focus on ensuring that Weipa remains the base for future bauxite mining south of the Embley River. “It is important that we remain focussed on ensuring that the town has the right approach to support mining and other industries which can keep Weipa as the business and cultural centre for Cape

York,” Mr McNamara said. New Councillor Jia said that she is looking forward to hearing from the community on the priority areas for the WTA that focus on taking Weipa forward. “Weipa is a great place to live and work, I am excited about having the opportunity to hear directly from the community and act on that feedback to ensure that the WTA is meeting the goals and expectations of our people,” Ms Jia said. The new members will join the team for the remainder of the term which is due to expire in 2016.

Call for enquiry into impacts of live cattle export ban AN LNP State Council meeting in Toowoomba last weekend has resolved to ask the Federal government to investigate the ﬁnancial impacts on individual and family businesses of the live cattle export ban. Senator Barry O’Sullivan moved an urgency motion seeking LNP support for the actions of the Queensland and Commonwealth governments assisting farmers impacted by the devastating drought. North Queensland based Senator Ian Macdonald submitted an addition to the motion to include a demand for the federal government to conduct a full investigation into all aspects of the live cattle ban but particularly looking at the impact on Northern beef cattle industry. Senator Macdonald, in moving his amendment, said that the government should recognise that while all farmers needed assistance during times of natural calamities like drought, the Northern beef cattle industry started effectively

two years behind everyone else because of the live cattle ban. “Clearly for two years before the drought hit, northern cattleman had been without a regular income and this had been caused by the direct decision of a Federal Government. “It is essential that the government looks at exactly what that ﬁnancial impact was before considering whether any recompense should be made.” Newly elected Senator Barry O’Sullivan said it was important that all Queenslanders should support the Federal and State governments in the recently announced relief measures for drought affected farmers. “We need to encourage the government not only to address the immediate problem but also to take a longer term look at what needs to be done to address the impacts of natural calamities like droughts,” Senator O’Sullivan said. The motion was adopted unanimously by the LNP State Council.

Traditional Owner calls for Wenlock River protection A western Cape York traditional owner says the draft Cape York regional Plan favours mining and pastoral interests over traditional Owners. Tjungungji man Thomas Pitt, from the Wenlock River region of Western Cape York said the draft regional plan ignores the traditional knowledge and values of his clan and nearby groups. The claims come amid growing concern that the Queensland Government has yet to schedule any public meetings in Cape York, as the March 25 deadline for public comment on the Draft Cape York Regional approaches. Mr. Pitt said his mob has been left in the dark throughout the development of the regional plan.

“This plan, it pulls more towards mining and pastoral leases,” Mr Pitt said. “There is no consideration for traditional knowledge. “It doesn’t even give us opportunity to speak on areas.” In November Premier Campbell Newman created a Strategic Environment Area (SEA) to provide perpetual protection for the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, on the Wenlock River, near Mapoon, from mining and other destructive industrial developments. Mr Pitt said the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities had created the Wenlock Catchment Group to hold the Queensland LNP Government to election promises to protect the river from mining and industrial threats.

tHInGs were a little bit country in the weipa woolworths supermarket last wednesday when staff hosted a “country barbecue” to aid drought affected farmers. Nationally, Woolworths’ customers have to date donated more than $250,000 to the appeal, which will be matched by the company dollar-for-dollar. Weipa Woolworths store manager Jenny Everist said the store’s social club had donated the meat for the barbecue which raised $320, which was matched by the social club for a total of $640 raised for the drought appeal.

New alliance to benefit Cape York communities twO of Cape York’s key regional organisations have aligned to work together on some key regional projects for the benefit of Cape York communities, under the leadership of their newly elected Chairs. Cape York Sustainable Futures (CYSF) and Cape Yo r k N a t u r a l R e s o u r c e Management (Cape York NRM) are developing a formal memorandum of understanding following a recent meeting of the two Boards in Cairns. CYSF has been working on Cape York for over 27 years, and is the peak body for Regional Development

and Advocacy, while Cape York NRM was formed in 2010 as the regional body for Natural Resource Management. The agreement will focus on collaboration and a transparent working relationship for targeted future investments from both government and the private sectors in Cape York. Newly elected chair for Cape York NRM, David Claudie, said it was time for the organisations to work closely together for the benefit of the people of Cape York. “Cape York NRM and Cape York Sustainable Futures will adopt a united front

to secure investment in our region” he said. Cape York Sustainable Futures newly elected chairperson, Peter McCulkin agreed. “It has been so important for our two organisations to come together in this way - it provides real legitimacy to what we need to achieve for the people of Cape York. Unity is the first step to real prosperity for the Cape” he said. The alliance has the support of the state and federal governments and both the Federal Member Warren Entsch and State Member David Kempton say they are delighted with the steps taken

by the two organisations over the weekend. Mr Claudie and Mr McCulkin plan to take their newly united voice to Brisbane in the near future to discuss with government a number of priorities, including the $7 million funding commitment to feral pig control as it relates to marine turtle conservation, the Great Barrier Reef, the Peninsula Development Road and the state of telecommunications in the region. “It’s time for alignment between government and community priorities, and together we will see this happen” Mr Claudie said.

spending in the electorate that it is reported for what it is and not misrepresented. The $10 million I recently announced for improvements to the Peninsula Development Road comes after many months of intense lobbying. These funds will be applied toward the sealing of about 25km of road as part of a long term strategy to upgrade it. A strategy, that never mattered to the previous Government. Premier Campbell Newman never promised $40 million funding for infrastructure in Cape York. Prior to the Federal election the ALP promised to spend $250 million in Cape York, dependent upon the State putting in $40 million which we never promised and frankly didn’t have. Warren Entsch and the coalition have now committed $210 million to Cape York infrastructure, money that is not dependent upon the State putting up funds. I am pushing for an upgrade of the McLeod River crossing and fighting hard for funds to upgrade Rifle Creek, both sadly neglected by Labor for 20 years. In the end it comes down to the availability of funding, Labor left us with a debt of $14, for every man woman and child in this State. Not everyone is happy with the intended upgrades but my commitment to my electorate is that it will look a lot better in 12 months’ time than it did, when I took this seat two years ago.

Even the unjust ways the Jews used to hand Jesus over to be crucified by the Romans was all part of God’s plan of salvation for everyone. Peter then made clear that when David wrote about God not leaving his faithful servant to rot in the grave, he was re-

ferring to his descendant the Messiah and not to himself, because David was still in his grave, but Jesus had risen. (Read Psalms Ch 16 vs 8-11; 2 Samuel 7 vs 12-13; Psalms 132 v 11; Psalms 110 v 1). (They should be at the bottom of your Bible pages). Discuss the following interesting question posed by Jesus to the Pharisees in Matthew Ch 22 vs 41-46 and see what you come up with. Volunteers clean up Weipa WESTERN Cape Landcare’s 2014 Clean Up Australia Event, held last Sunday morning, was well attended, with 35 volunteers collecting around four tonnes of rubbish from various locations in Weipa including Evans Landing, the land behind the Heritage Resort, and bushland behind Deplanchea Terrace. Volunteers enjoyed a well-earned barbecue lunch following the clean-up.

Teams finalised as the soccer season heats up

The final week of trial matches is done and dusted with teams now finalised and jerseys handed out to players. The final trial games were filled with fierce competition, lots of energy and some amazing ball skills. The exciting competition games will begin next Saturday, March 8. 9am: Squirts White Blue vs Gold Blue; White Black vs Yellow Green; Teens Blue vs Green, Gold vs Red. 10am: Tykes Red vs Blue 2; Blue 1 vs Green 1; Green 2 vs Gold; Titans Green vs Gold. Last Saturday seven teams, consisting of one golfer and one bowler, hit the Carpentaria Golf Club course for nine holes of golf. There were plenty of laughs and encouragement as the teams made their way around the course before heading to the

Unfortunately, the scheduled afternoon of bowls (where the bowlers were looking forward to showing off their prowess to their golfing partners) was cancelled due to a tropical downpour. The teams have so far managed to raise around $1300 for the Squires Family Trust and will be adding to that total when the bowls matches are rescheduled in the near future.

It’s very pleasing to see the members embracing the club captain’s decision to start competition golf earlier in the year as opposed to previous years when comps normally got under way late in March. People just wanting to break up their weekends a little, especially with not much else happening in Weipa during the wet months, which is possibly one of the reasons we are seeing good fields. The introduction of more motorised carts is without a doubt encouraging people to come on down and have a round of golf. The conditions during the “wet” can become quite heavy underfoot and coupled with the hot and sticky humidity carting your way around the course is a favourable alternative. Last Sunday saw a very good number of members play a single stableford competition sponsored by the Club. With just a couple of brief heavy showers to send players scurrying off for shelter good scores were once again returned both by ladies and gents. After a couple of recent near misses and runner-up finishes Pete Ross “stormed” home to take the event with a great round of 42 points which included a couple of birdies. Good on you Pete - got one at last. The runner-up was Phil Spry who also carded 42 points and was just pipped on a countback. Nearest the pins were Jhono Aspinall on 9 and Newmy on the 15th (who will never have to buy another golf ball as he is picking up a NTP each week). Matt Slade was nearest on the 18th green. Thanks everybody again for your support of the comps. The dates for the major competitions during the year are now on the board at the club so check to see how it fits with your shifts, holidays etc. This Sunday, March 9 the captain is running a single stroke. The theory is to head out in the dark, and I think it’s right as the fishing died in the butt when the ball of fire showed its ugly head, and we were only Sharked a couple of times as it started getting light. One very interesting thing I did notice was we had to keep changing to different baits to keep them on the chew. One minute they wanted Squid, then it was Pilchard or Herring. And I tell you what those fresh Green Back Herring swimming around Evans Landing worked a treat. There are some good Mackerel in the shipping channel taking metal slices and jigs, but you will need a bit of wire as they are mighty hungry. When I was out last Sunday we spotted pods of Tuna all the way from Pera to the harbour mouth including the channel so keep those slices handy. There has been some good success using Yo-Zuri 90120mm, silver being the best colour. Barra are being caught in most parts of the rivers and creeks with live baits and lures. If you can get some live Prawns you are on a winner, but Herring and
