Don’t drive to hospital . . . ring 000 A NUMBER of recent incidents where patients have attempted to reach hospital by private transport has prompted the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to warn residents about the dangers of driving seriously ill or injured friends or family members to hospital. QAS Cape York Local Ambulance Service Network (LASN) Superintendent Warren Martin said although it was great to see Cape York residents being self-reliant, when it comes to emergency situations people should always call Triple Zero (000) for help. “Every year, we see well-meaning people take patients to hospital in their own car,” he said. “Things can deteriorate very quickly and a patient’s injuries can quickly escalate to become life-threatening.” “The best action a bystander could take, was to assess the person’s airway, breathing and circulation, call Triple Zero (000) and provide first aid until paramedics arrived. “We have a number of off-road vehicles, as well as helicopters which can be tasked to retrieve ill or injured people in isolated areas. Patients need to stay put, listen to the advice of the Emergency Medical

Dispatcher and let the help come to them. “In an emergency seconds count, so it’s important to call for help immediately, without delay,” he said. Mr Martin reminded residents and travellers of the need to carry satellite phones in remote areas within the far north, and to know how to use them. “Calling for an ambulance using a satellite phone is no different to calling on a mobile or landline, you simply dial Triple Zero (000),” he said. “Some satellite phones can also display GPS coordinates, so familiarising yourself with your model can be valuable. “If you do find yourself in an emergency situation and don’t have a satellite phone, or it’s not working, most stations and homesteads in the Cape have landlines that can be used to call Triple Zero (000), so that’s always another option.” Mr Martin also highlighted the importance of knowing your surrounds. “Whether you’re just around the corner from home, or travelling off the beaten track, taking note of landmarks, stations and homesteads is important and can help paramedics get to you faster.”

Cyclone Gillian puts Cape York on alert

WITH the recent Tropical Cyclone beaming in on the Cape, the Weipa Local Disaster Management Group met at the Council Chambers last Friday and over the weekend the group was called to Alert activation level which was then upgraded to Lean Forward activation level on Saturday at noon. Tropical Cyclone Gillian formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and was headed for Weipa bringing gusts of 85km per hour with increasing gale force winds. The Chair of the Weipa Local Disaster Management Group, Stretch Noonan said the WLDMG requested assistance from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, (EMQ) to open the Weipa Public Cyclone

Shelter in the event it was required. Three Queensland Police officers and three Queensland Ambulance officers were also flown in to assist. “We met several times over the weekend and on Monday, monitoring and reviewing the situation through teleconference hook-ups with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and the District Disaster Management Group,” Mr Noonan said. “I’d like to thank all the services and community people on the Weipa Local Disaster Management Group for their dedication in their own time to ensure preparedness for the safety of the community,” he said. “I was impressed to see the level of clean-up and readiness of the community of Weipa for

the possibility of a cyclone. “By Sunday afternoon the town was moved to Condition Yellow due to the expectancy of gale force winds that are typical of the northern side of west coast cyclones. The prediction from the Bureau of Meteorology at the 5.30pm meeting on Monday stated Tropical Cyclone Gillian as being classified as ex Tropical Cyclone. As a result the WLDMG scaled back its activation level to Alert.” The latest BOM outlook issued prior to printing reported that at 9.30pm Monday, March 10 Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian was located over Cape York Peninsula near 14.7S 142.1E, about 55 km east northeast of Pormpuraaw, moving southeast

at 17 kilometres per hour. The system was expected to turn west southwest and move back over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters on Tuesday and could redevelop into a tropical cyclone by early Wednesday as it moved towards the southwest. Heavy rain and flash flooding is still occurring across Cape York and residents are reminded not to drive through flooded creeks and causeways. “If it’s flooded forget it.” Gale force winds could mean interruptions to communications. The Weipa community are asked not to venture out in boats and are asked to have their emergency kits fully stocked and available.

PREPARATION is the key to selfsufficiency for the lifestyle in Weipa and for Cape York Peninsula. The Wet season brings cyclonic and monsoonal weather patterns which can lead to occasional power, water and communications outages. The Weipa Local Disaster Management Group, the Weipa Town Authority and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services want everyone to Get Ready and build resilience. The recent communications outage affected phone communications, banking, government departments and the purchasing goods required cash. The Weipa Local Disaster Management Group reminds the community to be diligent with their safety precautions and to get their emergency kit ready for anything. Keep an eye out for the electronic notice boards of the Weipa Town Authority and Western Cape College, and public notices in the supermarket to get the latest advice.

anybody requiring emergency services assistance. If you have access to a satellite phone it is no different to using a landline or a mobile phone. You can call 000 and get emergency services. Mr Rinaudo said it was important to be well prepared and have your emergency kit fully stocked for any emergency event that may arise. “It is often too late when an emergency happens to then go and chase essentials like food, water and cash,” Mr Rinaudo said. Residents should refer to the ‘Get Ready Queensland’ website www. getready.qld.gov.au for a range of facts sheets on emergency kits and developing emergency plans for your household. “People should consider those items that are specific to their needs such as families with young babies should have a supply of nappies and baby food. The elderly may need to consider specific medications should they be without access to supplies for some time,” he said. Households should organise contacts with family, friends and neighbours and have a pre-determined place where family members can meet.

“The kids from school can go to Aunty Jean or a family member or friend, or stay at the school and someone can come and get them,” Mr Rinaudo said. “Organise with family and friends out of town that contact will be made to one person and this information will be passed on to others, therefore reducing excess phone calls, saving time and concerns and the battery life of the mobile phone.”

What do we do in the likelihood that we lose power in Weipa? Much the same as for the loss of communications. Households need to ensure they have as part of your Emergency Kit: cash available for food, fuel and household necessities. “Remember if we lose power we will most likely lose communications therefore it will be difficult or impossible to use EFTPOS or other credit facilities. So cash should always be high on your priority list.” People are reminded to ensure the safe storage of fuel for generators and that they are only used in well-ventilated environments.

WHAT’S ON...

Avenue of Trees planted at Napranum War Memorial site at Bowlies! An excited gathering of community members participated in a tree planting ceremony at the new war memorial gardens site near Waum Street, napranum last week. Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council is developing the war memorial with a grant from the Central Sub-Trust of the Western Cape Trust to commemorate wartime service by people of the former Weipa Presbyterian Mission (now Napranum). The war memorial will include cast bronze plaques with a roll of honour, a nominal roll and stories of wartime events. Following a welcome to country on behalf of the Alngith People by Trevor John, the Deputy Mayor, Margaret Adidi, spoke on behalf of the Napranum Council. Councillor Adidi said that the war memorial will be a special place to remember the family members who served during wartime. She thanked the Council Works crew led by Ray Starr for the construction work completed to date and the My Pathways crews, led by Derek Carter and Colin Savo, for preparing the trees and grounds for the ceremony. Thanks were also extended to Mary Fagan at Western Cape College for assisting with the children’s bus arrangements, to Angela Lui of Napranum PCYC and to Mark Valmadre for arranging marquees and seating. Historian Geoff Wharton gave a short overview of the project and talked about some of the wartime stories that Elders had given him in the past. This information had assisted him greatly in finding archival and photographic sources about Napranum’s wartime history. Geoff recounted a story given to him by the late Mrs Ina Hall about the time a

Japanese seaplane, with silver wings and a big red circle on the side flew up the Embley River. The missionary, Jimmy Winn, rang the mission bell and everyone rushed to get in to the slit trenches to take cover in case the Japanese bombed or machine-gunned the mission. Weipa Mission residents were lucky that the Japanese only came for a quick reconnaissance, probably to check if there were any Army troops or Air Force planes near the mission. If there had been, the Japanese may have attacked with heavy bombers from their bases in Dutch New Guinea or the Aru Islands. Elder Steven Hall, Chairman of the Napranum Men’s group and grandson of the late Jimmy James, said the group strongly supported the war memorial project and they were proud to know that the names of so many Napranum men would be displayed on the war memorial plaques. He called upon the community to look after this special place in memory of those who served. Pastor Palmer Wapau led the group in prayer and blessed the trees to be planted. Elders, Councillors, Rangers, children and community members

joined together to plant the trees and shrubs surrounding the war memorial site. Councillor Ernest Madua also spoke with the assembled children to ask for their support to protect the newly-planted trees. After the tree-planting, everyone moved to the community hall to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea organised by Napranum Council office manager, Julie Guest and her staff. Napranum Mayor, Councillor Philemon Mene and Council CEO Amos Njaramba, have announced that Napranum War Memorial will be officially opened by Federal member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch MP, with the Elders and family descendants of Napranum ex-servicemen on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

A whale of a tale

email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

PDR: How much bang will we get for our bucks?

By Ben Bright

I WAS out in my boat last Thursday (February 27) heading offshore for some fishing with a friend when I heard the RTM Weipa report they had found a whale caught up in net approximately 30 NM Northwest of Weipa, and after calling them and getting the GPS position, off we went to investigate. Upon arriving, there was 2 knots of current to the south, so I headed in that direction where we were side-tracked by a current line with plenty of logs, and other flotsam. A few fish were caught and we were then distracted by a pod of friendly False Killer Whales (pictured above) which swam with us for a while until they lost interest.

The whale carcass spotted by Ben Bright last Thursday.

Tegan then spotted the whale carcass in the distance. What we found was a first for us and yes, the smell was worse than you could imagine. There was no net, but the sun had cooked the skin and may have given the appearance of orange netting from a distance (cargo ships reported sighting a large whale caught up in a net – Western

Cape Bulletin, March 3, 2014). I’m quite sure this was a Bryde’s Whale which I’ve seen in the Gulf on numerous occasions, growing similar in size to that of a Humpback, and often feeding on bait balls. You can see several bite marks from sharks and we had one small, 2.5m Tiger Shark briefly come up to the boat.

Come along to our first community forum for 2014

MUCH has been quoted about road construction budgets for Cape York and the Peninsula Development Road since Labor Minister Albanese announced prior to the federal election $250 million would be available contingent upon $40 million contribution from the state government. Recent promises by Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch and State Member for Cook David Kempton (Western Cape Bulletin,February 26) have revealed that at least some funds will be available, depending on demands for local indigenous community road works. But how much bang will we get for our bucks? Mr Kempton has tossed in $10m which he states will seal 25km of road surface. Deduct normal administration and traffic control costs on average 40 per cent, and we are left with $6m for actual road work. A well-designed carriageway with a double/double seal sufficient to carry heavy trucks should cost approximately $500,000 to $600,000 per kilometre in such a remote area, but can greatly increase depending on

many factors, including the number of culverts and bridges to be constructed. Many hundreds of culverts and several large bridges will be needed to keep water off the roadway making it an engineering and economic impossibility to flood-proof the entire Peninsula Development Road. For the $10m we may finish up with 12 kilometres of bitumen road strong enough to withstand heavy road trains, floods and the tens of thousands of motor vehicle movements that occur in the tourist season. If Mr Kempton plans to simply duplicate the cheaper single bitumen spray seal similar to three years ago which broke up into a horrible mess north of Coen and elsewhere then there is no point in wasting any more taxpayers money. Queensland needs men and women with vision, to take on large infrastructure building such as the proposed $3.5 billion Weipa rail link, the only tangible infrastructure stimulus that will take the Peninsula and the Far North from abject poverty to exciting prosperity. Thinking people don’t want the Liberal Government to tear up any more far northern rail lines such as Atherton to Mareeba. One day they will be needed. William Bensted ‘Bibboringa’ Mt Garnet

Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

Help much appreciated In February, my partner and I were the victims of a home invasion by two people. One of them was armed with a weapon capable of inflicting a serious injury or even worse. It was a very harrowing experience, to say the least. However, the support from the Weipa community has been amazing. From the initial contact with the Weipa Police and the subsequent apprehension of the offenders. From the strangers that answered my plea for a wine to calm my nerves (the bottle shop could have opened a bit earlier I thought . . .) From our work mates and work places. Thank you for your kind words, support and patience. A big thank you to the Queensland Department of Education, in particular, Western Cape College for their support and assistance during this period. And finally to our wonderful friends. The experience has not only deepened our friendship but it has also given us the opportunity to make new friends. So thank you Weipa for showing Bruce and I the true spirit of living in a small remote area. Kaz

Let’s get normalisation back on the table At the Weipa Governance Summit about five years ago Desley Boyle (Minister for Local Government at the time) made the comment that “The State Government was committed to the Normalisation of Weipa”, also Joanne Scarini general manager of Rio tinto Alcan Weipa at the time agreed, “That the current model of Governance is problematic and Weipa would be better with its own independent governance”. Both of these people expressed the view that something had to change - Weipa needed to join the real world. Out of this a committee was formed in 2010 with representatives from Rio Tinto, Weipa Town Authority, and the Local Government Department for the State Government. Over the last four to five years they have met on a reasonably regular basis to look into the whole “normalisation thing”. They looked closely into the cost of running this town, the age of the assets, etc. It is my understanding that an enormous amount of work was done by this committee to form a clearer picture of the true cost of operating

our town. Once this first stage was finished they would then move onto the implementation stage. Normalisation has always been something of a mystery to a lot of the people of this town, and there is a lot of misinformation about normalisation, its impact and the costs to the rate payers. That is why the committee that was formed MUST be supported by all three parties to run its full course and present to the people of Weipa a clear, accurate picture of what Weipa would look like once it was normalised. We need to know the truth about the costs, the availability of Government funding etc, so that WE, the people of Weipa can make an informed decision on whether or not we want to be NORMALISED. Surely we should all support this committee to reach their objective. The future of Weipa cannot be left solely in the hands of a mining company to decide. Yes, the mine was responsible for the town starting, and yes they have given us security of income over the years, but I don’t understand why normalising the town would in any way threaten the security of the mine, as some seem to believe. Normalisation is not just about the governance of our community; normalisation is also about the right of this community to have a hands-on say in our future and in the direction that we want to go.

It is about the right of our community leaders to openly court other business and industry to come and set up in our community, thereby diversifying and broadening the economy and the rate base. Any business knows that it is not good to have all your eggs in one basket, and with the fluctuations in the mining industry, to have other business supporting Weipa’s economy any hard times are hopefully evened out. I believe that the mine will be a part of Weipa’s future for a long time to come, but why is the decision about carrying this community into the future theirs alone to make? Rio Tinto is a publicly listed company and it has a responsibility to its shareholders to make sound business decisions to maintain the profitability and long-term future of its operations. Sometimes those decisions may mean that part of the business is shut down. While that decision may have good business rational to back it up, what about the human cost? I am sure the people of Gove who have bought homes and invested in property, and now have mortgages hanging over their heads are wondering about their future with no small amount of fear and trepidation. I know there would be those who may see this as another letter attacking the mine, and in my heart I know that it really isn’t, but I believe that for the long-term future of our

community it is time that the mine let go of the reins and focussed on mining, which is their core business. And as they are a long-term member of this community, support the move to see Weipa as a community standing on its own feet in charge of its own destiny. It is also time that the people of Weipa took ownership of their town, to quote Desley Boyle again, “the push for normalisation needs to come from the people in the community”. But for us to be able to make that decision we need to have all the information available to us. So, I call on all the parties to get back around the table and see the process through to the end. To all those who read this letter and feel the way I do then contact the members of the Weipa Town Authority and let them know your views, and support them to keep going forward. Michael Rowland

Getting the tools to find their trades YOUNG participants in the Indigenous Tradies Program were launched forward towards their goal of getting trade qualified in the construction industry in areas such as electrical, refrigeration, carpentry and cabinet making last Friday. A barbecue was held at the Western Cape Centre with Florence Charger welcoming people on behalf of the Western Cape Communities Trust, a member of the Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA). A joint initiative of My Pathway and the RPA and sitting under the Australian Government’s Remote Youth Leadership and Development Corps, the Indigenous Tradies Program has guided six Year 12 graduates from Western Cape College through Certificate II in Construction Pathway and four weeks work experience on the Napranum Council’s Island and Cape Supermarket and Civic Centre building project. The participants have worked on the single largest infrastructure project that the Council has undertaken over the last 10 years, worth $2.5m. Funded by the Department of Local Government and the Napranum Council, the participants, most of whom are local to Napranum, are very proud to have worked on this project. The supermarket is to be completed in June 2014. “These are the young people who can be part of the region’s future generation of tradespeople, either working for local councils, construction companies or, in time forming their own businesses. They have the capabilities and the commitment, ” said Liz Logan, Coordinator of the RPA. The program was launched jointly by the RPA chairperson, Gareth Manderson and the Industry and Client Relations Manager of My Pathway, Mark England. Both talked about the need to diversify Indigenous employment skills and qualifications and the future of regional growth resting in everyone’s hands, both

Gareth pointed to the importance of education, and to these young people as the best of the College’s Indigenous VET students, and the role that the College played in putting forward such aspiring young candidates. Mark England discussed the government’s Youth Corp Program and the support provided to these aspiring young apprentices by My Pathway and its staff, both in Cairns (particularly Monique Guazzo), and on the ground in the Western Cape. Mark said “This is an outstanding initiative and I would like to acknowledge Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa for their leverage of and commitment to providing work in their current development and build,” Mark said. “Regional growth is important, as is the need to diversify from mining to grow capacity in communities for the long term. “The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet have recognised this particular Youth Corp process and model as a

Whyte Adidi and Nakeysha Bowie responded on behalf of the participants – Barry Giblet, Michaela Smith-Hart, Bowdu Jacko and Renae DickSabatino – saying that they had learnt many skills over the past seven weeks and were keen to learn more in the work place. Whyte, in referring to the particular skills of each of the individual participants, said “Barry doesn’t say much but he works real hard” and pointed to “Michaela’s stunning cabinet making skills”.

“We are all ready and enthusiastic about getting our apprenticeships started on the job, with many thanks to our trainer, Joseph Lui and others that have supported us up to this point,” Whyte said. In rounding up the day, Chris Emerick, Regional Manager for My Pathway, thanked the RPA’s Indigenous Work Skills Program mentors, Yvette Carter and Edem Lemaire for their interim support until the new mentor, Christine Rhazi, takes up the reins. Chris thanked Florence Charger for making the Western Cape Centre available for the launch and for her welcome and all the My Pathway staff that had supported the program. “Thanks to collaboration between RTAW Commercial Infrastructure, Liz Logan, Coordinator of RPA and recently, the new Industry Placement Consultant of My Pathway, Linda Parkes, it looks like four of the six young tradies to be, have jobs already,” Chris said.

news Grunter hunters reel together the community What better way to bring the community together than a fishing competition? In true Weipa style, that’s just what the MOKWI Napranum Men’s Group and the Weipa Police did. The Weipa Police and MOKWI Napranum Men’s Group are working in partnership on “Project Turning Point” which is all about empowering men in the Napranum Community to take ownership of issues and address them without constant Police intervention. With a view to forging a strong working relationship between the two groups; MOKWI Men’s group coordinator Vincent Barkley and Acting Senior Sergeant Alan Dewis set to the task of organising a two-day fishing competition. The event ran from Friday February 28 to Saturday March 1 with the primary objective of targeting the species Grunter. Anglers took to the water over the two days to demonstrate the skills behind all of those ‘big fish tales’, finishing up

Cape Patrols Inspector Paul James took part in the fishing competition, unfortunately the only catch he was able to present to the weighmaster was sunburn. Inspector James was encouraged by the future potential of the event. “It’s all about two groups finding some common ground to engage with each other so we can work together on a broader range of issues”, said Inspector James.

“Both the police and the MOKWI Men’s group want Napranum to be a safer community to live in, working together will help us all achieve this. “I would like to thank organisers Vincent and Alan for arranging this event and hope it will grow to become an annual event”. A sincere thankyou is extended to Alex Petridis from Mensheds Australia for donating the prizes for the event.

on Saturday with a weigh-in and barbecue at the Napranum Men’s Group base. The only skilled angler good enough to bring in Grunter was Benny Boseun who was the overall competition winner. Other lucky anglers were James Kawanga who caught a Threadfin Salmon, Jack James with his Queenfish and Richard Barkley who scored a mystery prize for catching a rather large Shark.

MANAGEMENT and staff of Goodline Weipa had plenty to cheer about last Saturday when they celebrated 1500 day of LTI Free (Loss Time Injury) at the Weipa Bowls Club. Goodline executive manager Catherine Kennedy said the achievement was an excellent one for everyone involved as it meant that for one third of the time the company had been operating in Weipa there had been no time lost to injury. The night was particularly special for six employees who celebrated their 10 years of service with Goodline. Mining ban: Cape Alumina lodges petition SINce the decision by the Queensland Government to ban mining over the Bertiehaugh cattle Station and the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve (SIWR) “in perpetuity”, cape alumina Limited has been active on a number of fronts to restore value for its shareholders, the traditional Owners in cape York, and all Queenslanders, including the lodging of a petition. On March 5, 2014, Managing Director of Cape Alumina Graeme Sherlock lodged a

petition requesting the Premier to consider reversing his decision to ban mining in the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. The petition has been supported by an overwhelming number of Traditional Owners in Cape York and, in particular, the elders of the Taepithiggi Pargon Bertiehaugh Clan, whose land interests overlap the SIWR. In a bulletin issued this week, Cape Alumina stated “The Queensland Government announced its ban on mining

in Strategic Environmental Areas as part of the Cape York Regional Plan. However, the Cape York Regional Plan is currently only in draft form and the supporting legislation, the Regional Planning Interests Bill, has not yet been presented to the Queensland Parliament. It is expected that the Cape York Regional Plan and the Regional Planning Interests Bill will be enacted in mid 2014.” Cape Alumina is encouraging shareholders and other

stakeholders to add their name to the petition (just click on “yes” to sign the E-Petition) available via the following link: http://www.parliament.qld.gov. au/work-of-assembly/petitions/ e-petition?PetNum=2228 or can be found at the website: www.parliament.qld.gov.au (click on the “Work of the Assembly” tab and then click on “Petitions” and then select “Current Petitions”, followed by “Reverse the decision to ban mining in the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve”).

Celebrating the women of Cape York Linda Murray: paving the way for women in the mining industry ognised amongst such a high calibre of talented women from across Queensland’s resources industry.” After growing up in regional New South Wales near the coal fields, and determined to break the mould of a traditional female career, Ms Murry graduated from Central Queensland University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in 2003, and began her career as a Chemist.

I am fortunate that I am passionate about the work I do – it’s not just a job for me – Linda Murray

Gareth Manderson said. “Diversity in the workforce is a key focus area for the mine site, and I am proud to say there is 25 per cent female participation across our workforce. “Encouraging more women to join our workforce makes good business sense, and I recognise we still have work to do to showcase the opportunities and career paths that are available in the mining industry.” Not one to shy away from a challenge, Ms Murry believes a professional woman can really have it all – balancing family and have a fulfilling career. “I am grateful that I have been able to work across a range of roles here on site, and that Rio Tinto is a company that focuses on the development of its people,” Ms Murry said. “While working as Laboratory Superintendent, I felt very supported with my aspirations to grow professionally, and was encouraged to pursue a Masters in Mining Engineering,” she said. Ms Murry’s leadership extends to the broader community, having recently set up a Weipa chapter of the very successful Women in Mining & Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) group. A WEIPA-BASED mining manager, who was one of the first female superintendents to manage two operational teams at Rio Tinto Alcan’s bauxite mine, has won state-wide recognition at the Queensland Resources C o u n c i l ’s R e s o u rc e s Awards for Women, held on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 7 in Brisbane. Linda Murry was awarded Highly Commended in the top resources sector award, for her contribution to paving the way for women in the mining industry. In her role as manager of the Planning & Logistics department at Rio Tinto Alcan’s bauxite mine in Weipa, Ms Murry leads a team of more than 250 people and oversees the activities of two operational groups. Ms Murry’s role spans the mining life cycle – from pre-mining clearing to shipping, and land regeneration. After learning she was a finalist in the QRC Awards, Ms Murry said the experience was humbling, but she was proud to be a part of an initiative that empowers women to become leaders in the mining industry. “I am fortunate that I am passionate about the work I do – it’s not just a job for me,” Ms Murry said. “I feel very honoured to have been rec-

Having crossed the border into Queensland, she then spent several years consulting for the mining industry in Mackay, and eventually arrived in Weipa in 2007, taking on the role of Laboratory Superintendent for Rio Tinto Alcan. ‘‘Linda is a key part of the mine’s leadership team, with her drive and innovation meeting the challenges of the modern mining industry,” Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager, Operations,

The Resources Awards for Women were presented on Friday morning at an I n t e r n a t i o n a l Wo m e n ’s Day breakfast celebration in Brisbane, hosted by the Queensland Resources Council.

New WIMARQ chapter believes Weipa women can have it all THE Weipa chapter of Women in Mining & Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) was officially launched on Saturday night, March 8, at the Weipa Community Care’s annual International Women’s Day dinner event. Linda Murry, President of the new volunteer chapter, said she is keen to get the word out about who WIMARQ is, and how women in our community can get involved. “I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to launch the new chapter of WIMARQ, than at an event that directly celebrates the success of Weipa women and their achievements,” Linda said. “ We h a v e a c o m m i t t e e o f dedicated ladies, who will organise a series of networking events over this year for women in the Western Cape region,” she said. These events will support women in our community to achieve their professional goals by providing advice and handy tools, and giving everyone an opportunity to ask questions and network.

“We believe that professional women can really have it all these days – including balancing family and having a fulfilling career,” Linda said. With Linda at the helm and the volunteer committee keen to hit the ground running, their first event will be held next month – a Wine down at the Deck evening at 6pm, Friday, April 11, held at the Albatross Bay Resort. Other events during the year will include a workshop about leadership, a session about the importance of health and wellness, functions to align with the Melbourne Cup race, and even a tour of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s bauxite mine. Those interested to come along to the committee’s Wine Down at the Deck event can find out more information from Brooke Courtnage on 4069 8651. The Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) group is a sub-committee of the AusIMM (The Minerals Institute) Women in Mining Network.

Weipa WAGS pushing Isolation is no barrier for this Kowanyama Ambulance Officer the barrow for RFDS Late in the 1800s when work was scarce and transportation was limited, miners often used to travel about the region using a wheelbarrow to carry all of their possessions. In 2004, as a tribute to these early pioneers and to honour their amazing trail-blazing feats, the road between Mareeba and Chillagoe was named the Wheelbarrow Way. By Rosa Murray

THIS year a group of 10 local women WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends), will be the first ever team from Weipa to compete in the Great Wheelbarrow Race, to be held from May 16 to18. The 140km three-stage team relay event, which follows the Wheelbarrow Way, was first staged in 2004 and last year (the 10th anniversary of the race) saw a record-breaking number of teams enter and over $400,000 raised for charity. Our team has chosen to fundraise for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which in Weipa is our direct lifeline to life-saving help and facilities, and most of our lives have been touched by the RFDS. In the upcoming months you will see us at some community events raising funds, but more than likely you will see

us on the bike track or on the side of the road running with our wheelbarrows. Last weekend was our first trial, doing a long run from the Woolies car park to the airport and back. Thank you to those who came to cheer us on and those who gave us a beep as they passed us. It is very encouraging for us to get this support from the community. Next Sunday, March 16 we will again be doing a long run, so if you see us honk your horn, give us a cheer and if you have some spare change, throw it in our barrow! Come on Weipa, get behind your local team and watch this space for our progress, or you can follow us on Facebook at Weipa WAGs – 2014 Great Wheelbarrow Race Fundraiser RFDS If you wish to make a donation to the RFDS simply go to https://gwrrfds2014. everydayhero.com/au/weipa-wagswives-and-girlfriends

Women have provided pre-hospital care in Queensland since the establishment of ambulance services in 1892. Today, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Field Officer-In-Charge Mellissa Keune continues providing this service to the Indigenous Cape York community of Kowanyama . . . K O WA N YA M A ( w h i c h means ‘Place of Many Waters) remains flooded-in for up to five months of the year, and as such relies heavily on Health Services and the Rural Flying Doctor Service for medical support, but isolation is no issue for the community’s QAS officer in charge Mellissa Keune. “The nearest big town is more than 700 kilometres from Kowanyama and access to it is predominantly by unsealed roads,” Mellissa said. Though working in a remote location can have its challenges, Mellissa enjoys her role. “I love working with the challenges that are faced in this unique position and look forward to continuing my role in this beautiful area,” Mellissa said. She has been positioned at Kowanyama for the past three years. “My role here in Kowanyama and the Cape York area is based largely on emergency care education and injury prevention. “I spend the wet season educating people on the cattle stations, homelands and in towns surrounding Kowanyama on health and injury prevention. “I travel to other communities such as Pormpuraaw when the roads open to run workshops and teach several courses such as first aid. “I also assist allied health and other emergency service agencies by taking part in disaster management roles

Mellissa is very passionate about helping people, managing a road safety and education page in her downtime and also studying. “I am passionate about road safety and making sure the community is safe”, she said. Mellissa has made an invaluable contribution to emergency services and proved that gender is no barrier in the delivery of vital frontline services, even in isolated and remote areas of Queensland.

We are at present reading from Acts Ch 2 vs 16-37 about Peter’s message to the people explaining all the outwards signs of the appearance of the Holy Spirit that was happening around them. He then pointed out that when you look at the prophecies given in the Old Testament, it’s not hard to see that Jesus fits the bill in being the long awaited Messiah. But his own Jewish people, especially the spiritual leaders, were only too willing to kill him as being an impostor. (gaamon). He was real “in your

By Rev. Michael Connolly

face” with the people about their killing Jesus, their Messiah. (Acts 2v 24; Acts 2 v 36). The Pharisees always believed that as they were the “keeper of the truth” they had a clearer understanding than anyone else of what and who the Messiah should be. He is the Son of David as is always believed. (Matthew Ch 21 v 14-16). Jesus put a real curly question to them once when he asked them in Matthew Ch 22 vs 41-46 that if the Messiah was David’s descendant, how come David turns around and call the Messiah

Lord? They were left dumbfounded! Jesus was trying to hint to them that the Messiah was more than what they believed, more than just an ordinary human being, and whose kingdom was more than just an earthly one. Work this one out; Jesus created David then became David’s descendant. From what we know of the Lord today, it’s not hard to understand, though, is it? (Colossians Ch 1 v 15-17). Remember Holy Week 2014 that began with Lent. Rev Michael Connolly

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A longstanding friend could use a wardrobe update. Don’t be too critical of them. Instead, take them out for a shopping spree! Romance. You must be careful to consider your partner’s needs, even if they don’t express them directly to you. You may need to dig a little.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A friend’s negative comment may be more self-reflective than anything. Ask how they are doing this week. They may be struggling. Romance. Your keen sense of style will get you noticed by a member of the opposite sex. Keep up the good work because it’s working!

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

FOR KIDS

You may be surprised how quickly a new friendship becomes more demanding. You may not be ready for someone with so much energy. Romance. A person whom you have not seen for many months will suddenly be back in your life. Avoidance is not an option here.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A colleague at work could cause problems. You will be seeing a lot of this person in the future, so try not to be too hard on them. Settle differences early to prevent trouble later. Romance. A new relationship will become more serious. You may find the pace a little daunting!

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You may have more work to do than you realise. You cannot do it all by yourself and must find a way to get more support from your colleagues. Romance. Introducing your new partner to your friends could be overwhelming. Rest assured, they are going to love your mate.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 189 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

Don’t let new ideas go to waste. While they may not be used immediately, they may create talk about similar projects at work. Romance. If you follow other people’s ideas you will get nowhere. You need to take control of your relationship and guide it where you want.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You could easily get bogged down in phone calls and red-tape at work. Make sure that you focus your energy on what is important. Romance. Life is too short to spend it in a relationship you are not happy with. You may need to do some soul-searching later this week.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

A flexible approach will help you to get what you want. Don’t let other people’s standards prevent you from looking at this from a fresh angle. Romance. Your mate may be holding you back from making serious personal progress. Try to get them on board and you’ll both succeed.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Your relationship with a person whom you depend on may be going through some ups and downs at the moment. Be there for them as much as you can. Romance. A potential mate could be waiting for you at a local shop, restaurant or market. Be on the lookout for them!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) This is not a good time to try to make any changes in your work life. Those with authority are too busy to sit and listen to your ideas. Save them for another week. Romance. Your criteria may be set too high when looking for qualities in a mate. Create a new list and go forward.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. When life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means it’s going to launch you into something great. So just focus, and keep aiming.

Questions answered? THE much anticipated NRL season kicked off on Thursday evening, the round shaped up with a lot of questions to be answered. Would the mighty Roosters go back-to-back? Will the big buy’s pay off? And will the Sharks get over there troubled past? The first match-up came around with the Roosters up against the Rabbitohs. G.I stole the show with a hat-trick, leaving last year’s Premiers questioning themselves after a disappointing loss. On Friday the Broncos played the Bulldogs, with the question of “can Barba perform against old club”. Broncos snuck home with the win in what was an evenly played match. Saturday bought three games; the Panthers proved they mean business this season by smashing the Knights. Manly and Melbourne battled it out in a game that went into golden point time, with the Storm winning by field goal. Then the Cowboys played the Raiders in what was another close game, the Cowboys came home strong to seal the victory. On Sunday St George proved their buys were worth the money with a win over the Tigers. Then the Eels pulled the upset of the round, winning significantly over the Warriors. Monday night football is back with the Gold Coast narrowly beating Cronulla. In a preview into Round 2 there will be no Thursday night game. Friday will have two games with Manly up against South Sydney, and the “Queensland derby” between the Broncos and the Cowboys. Super Saturday is back with three games being played. The Warriors take on the Dragons, the Storm play the Panthers and the Roosters look for a win over the Eel’s. Sunday will only have two games, with the Titans up against the Tigers and the Knights versing the Raiders. Monday night’s game will close the round with the Bulldogs up against the Sharks. Karl’s Tips: Rabbitohs, Cowboys, Dragons, Storm, Roosters, Titans, Knights and Bulldogs. In local news, the Weipa Wet Season Competition kicked off over the weekend with two men’s games. In the first match-up were the two new teams into the competition the Goodline Linebreakers and the Napranum Twal. The Linebreakers proved they meant business winning 62-10 over the Twal. The second game was the Grand Final replay with the Weipa Raiders up against the Napranum Natives. The Weipa Raiders snuck home with the win over the Natives 28-20. Round 2 will kick-off on the 22nd March as follows: 5pm – Weipa Raiders vs Goodline Linebreakers 6:30pm – Womens Games 7:30pm – Napranum Twal vs Napranum Natives Yours in Footy, Karl

Blues defend well against strong Green opposition  from page 1 With Green’s many attempts at goal their score could have been massive if it wasn’t for the great defence of the Blue tteam. Team Blue players Jahman, Bridget, Daniel, Caleb, Jonty and Josh ran hard to defend the Green goal and worked together to score four super goals. Teen’s coach James was on hand to give teams some advice and help to keep the game flowing. The players really benefit from the knowledge James is passing onto them - so a big thanks to Coach James. Coaching sessions, which are held at the WCC Soccer Field, have been very well attended. Unfortunately this week’s coaching had to be cancelled due the weather - our apologies for any inconvenience. The coaching sessions are a fantastic opportunity for all players to learn some ball and game skills from our awesome coaches.

(Squirts and Tykes with Richelle; Teens with James from 4 to 5pm; and Titans with Sandy from 5 to 6pm. Thanks to all who are helping out with these coaching sessions. Northern Pride’s new mascot

Nominate your netball hero

seA swift northern Pride have officially unveiled its new star signing for 2014 – the Club’s new mascot, Barlow the lion. Barlow is set to become a crowd favourite at The Jungle (Barlow Park), where he will entertain rugby league fans young and old with his game day antics during the 2014 Intrust Super Cup season. Pride Chief Executive Officer Brock Schaefer said Barlow is a cheeky yet loveable and entertaining character, and is ready to help roar the Pride to glory this year. “We’ve managed to fight off several other clubs for his signature – we think it was the lure of The Jungle!” said Mr Schaefer. “He certainly gave no ‘paws’ for thought when we asked him to join the Pride, and we’re certain he’ll become one of the ‘mane’ attractions at our home games this season.

AustrAliAn Diamond netball superstar, Kimberlee Green, is teaming up with telstra to recognise and reward Far north Queensland’s netball heroes through the inaugural telstra netball Hero award. A Telstra Netball Hero is someone who dedicates their time and energy to provide support and expertise for the game at a community level. They may be a coach, umpire, score keeper, a person who tends to injuries or a dedicated volunteer who is courtside at every match, supporting the players. Kimberlee nominated her own mum, Denise, as her Telstra Netball Hero and is calling on local residents to nominate someone in their community who has encouraged and supported their netball journey. “I started playing netball at a young age, so mum played a massive role in supporting me in my training, driving me to matches and providing the encouragement I needed to play at a representative level,” said Kimberlee. “Mum’s success as an Olympic swimmer gave me the inspiration and drive to succeed in my sporting endeavours and she was always there to provide the emotional

The national Telstra Netball Hero Award winner will receive a VIP experience at their closest State Team Gala Dinner, including return airfares to the nearest capital city of their closest State Team Gala Dinner and airport transfers (unless the winner’s nearest capital city and location of the dinner are in the same city), two nights’ accommodation and a day spa voucher. The national winner will also receive a $1,000 grant for the registered netball team, club or association connected to the 2014 Telstra Netball Hero and two signed team shirts. can get about these theories but this is something you will have to work out yourself - good luck. Here are some basic rules you can follow...the first one is, three or four days before and after the full and new moon have, over time, proven to be basically the ideal fishing periods. Secondly, the first and last hour of a tide, when it is slowing down or speeding up, are the best parts of a tide. Thirdly, two hours before and after sunrise and sunset are the major bite times. The fourth rule, and probably the most important one, is when your partner lets you, or your boss doesn’t know you want to go fishing. If you can marry all these cycles together, using FRESH bait or patiently flicking lures, you will catch fish. My old Grandfather, who started me fishing rest his soul, used to say if the White Egret (those long-necked birds you see on the edges of the mangroves), aren’t feeding the fish won’t be biting, and he was usually right. Some great pics I have in my library, and I thought I would throw in a pigging shot to liven up the yarn, that’s Andrew showing off his dentures. The one of the fish in the Grey suit is one of my pets I feed every time I go out. Have a great week and I will catch up next week.Enjoy your fishing. – Terri

S

I’ve received a few requests about printing some quality fishing knots in the Bully, so starting next week I will draw three knots that I feel every angler should learn - the Uni to Uni knot, the Spider Hitch, the Perfection Loop. These knots will cover tying braid to mono, tying a double in your mono or braid, and tying on hooks and lures so make sure you get a copy of the Bully each week. This is probably one of the best fishing times I have seen in Weipa for ages. Anglers fishing for Fingermark are bagging out, Barra seem to be waiting around every corner, Spanish Mackerel are chewing on just about any type of lure you want to cast or troll, Tuna pods are up and down the coast feeding on schools of Hardy Heads and Northern Pilchards, and Grunter, one of the best table fish you will ever eat, are being caught at every vantage point you can cast a bait. Now to the nitty gritty, when is the best time and where is the best spot? That’s one question only Neptune knows. I have been asking this one myself for over five decades with only a few answers I will share with you. It has always been known the moon controls the tides - I know the wind and temperature do alter some tides, but overall the moon is the main influence on tides. You hear many theories on when is the best time to fish, and there are many books you
