WEIPA Police are investigating the disappearance of a crew member from a large vessel which is presently moored out from Weipa in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The missing man, a 29-year-old Chinese national, was last seen onboard the bulk carrier vessel ‘Great Talent’ on Saturday, March

22. He was noticed missing following a crew muster early the following morning. A subsequent search of the vessel failed to locate the missing man. The ship has been moored about 12 nautical miles off Weipa Harbour for the past eight days.  continued page 2

Weipa Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel “Rescue One” was deployed in the area on Sunday, transporting local CIB and Customs officers to the vessel and conducted a search of the area. VMR Weipa skipper Peter “Crazy” Graham said despite an extensive grid pattern search by “Rescue One” and three privately owned vessels there was no sign of the missing crew member. Two helicopters, from Horn Island and Cairns rescue units were also involved in the search. Inspector Paul James told the Western Cape Bulletin on Tuesday afternoon that local authorities had been joined onboard the vessel by Scientific Crime Police, Detectives from Cairns, Customs Officers, Thursday Island Water Police and the local Boating and Fisheries Patrol. “We also have interpreters on board to assist Police in the investigation which is currently being treated as a missing person case,” he said. “The ship was due to remain moored at the site for a further 10 days and that will remain unchanged at this stage,” Inspector James said.

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

IN view of the recent fuss in and around Parliament, the Minister has asked me to give everyone an explanation of what has been happening, and reassure them that there is nothing to worry about. The Minister and his colleagues have everything under control, and they continue to work hard for the benefit of all Australians. I am glad to support the Minister, of course, and I suppose

CAPE York mayors are calling for sly groggers to be slapped with harsher penalties in an effort to combat the issue which is plaguing their communities. Aurukun Mayor Dereck Walpo yesterday led the call for police to be given more resources in the Cape to be able to hunt down and apprehend the “spineless jellyfish” who are running alcohol and drugs into the dry communities and charging hugely inflated prices to locals. “Council wants to see more offenders apprehended and stricter penalties applied to them when they face court,” he said “I am appalled at the low-lifes ... who make a living from the corruption of a minority of Aurukun residents who are prepared to pay up to $250 per bottle of spirits.” Napranum and Kowanyama mayors Philemon Mene and Robert Holness backed Mr Walpo’s claims. Mr Holness said it was a clear reason Alcohol Management Plans in the communities should be lifted. “It’s not that we don’t want alcohol, we just want it regulated,” he said. “It might bring it (sly grogging) to a crashing halt.” He said the communities needed to help themselves. “The police do their best, but it’s got to come from within the communities, not through law and order,” he said.

I had better start by describing the Minister’s company, Water Investments and Infrastructure Inc. The Minister and some knowledgeable friends have identified a lack of administrative and financial skills in the water industry, and set up their company to provide a range of such services to the industry. They are absolutely wonderful at negotiating contracts, especially because the people who ultimately sign the contracts are such close friends. These sorts of commercial arrangements are a vital part of Australia’s dynamic modern economy and are especially welcome as they offer our impoverished politicians to earn an honest dollar or two, in

Mayors call for harsher penalties for sly groggers

“Community leaders have got to stand up now.” Sly grogging is far more prevalent during the dry season when vehicles can reach the communities via roads, which are frequently cut during the wet season. However, a 19-year-old Cairns man was charged last week when he allegedly flew into Kowanyama with five litres of spirits. Black market liquor can change hands in the Cape for more than 10 times its normal retail value. Far North police acting Chief Supt Brett Schafferius said police based in the Cape saw firsthand the impact of alcohol in the communities. “We act on information ... and are well aware these offences do occur,” he said.

between Parliamentary sittings. They also give party treasurers the chance of generous donations from the grateful businesses concerned. The Minister has been upset at media speculation that he stood to make enormous sums of money as a director of Water Investments and Infrastructure, and he has asked me to state that these accusations are completely untrue. He points out that negotiating high level agreements like these is very onerous, and the fees charged do not represent the amount of work and inconvenience involved. Because everyone concerned is busy during the day, working meetings invariably take place

over dinner and sometimes last far into the night. It is hard work, and should be rewarded. The Minister sees no impropriety in accepting Government payment for his efforts. The sums involved are surprisingly small, with invoices of perhaps only $50,000 in a typical month. Or perhaps a little more, if the dinner was well attended. It is true that the Minister stood to receive a small extra honorarium when the contract was signed but, again, this is quite normal practice. He does not understand all the fuss about this payment. It is not as if a mere $20 million would affect his judgement. Bruce O’Krat, Advisor to the Minister

news CYRP: last minute meetings too little, too late

Alwyn Lyall (foreground) and Desmond Tayley (Traditional Owner, Laura) discussing the Cape York Regional Plan at Billys Coffee in Cairns. By Giembra Busmer

TWO last minute meetings in Laura and Lakeland on Monday, March 24 have failed to instil confidence in the Cape York Regional Plan or the consultation process, according to Western Yalanji chairperson alwyn Lyall. Mr Lyall said the meeting in Laura with Member for Cook, David Kempton was “not what we had hoped for”. The closing date for submissions was midnight on Tuesday,

March 25 and Cape York stakeholders, concerned with lack of consultation about the plan, had hoped for an extension of the submission period. “Unfortunately Mr Kempton told us on Monday that he could not personally commit to the extension – the only person who could do this was the Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney,” Mr Lyall said. (Mr Seeney issued a media release on March 20 stating “Queenslanders have until

March 25 to participate in formal consultation on the draft Cape York Regional Plan.” Mr Seeney’s statement would seem to effectively rule out an extension.) Mr Lyall said he had lodged a submission on the draft Cape York Regional Plan despite lack of consultation as he was unhappy with the lack of culturally appropriate guidelines for future land use in Cape York within the plan. “It was a shock to discover that important cultural heritage country (including the Quinkan Art Gallery) is zoned for future mining and Development under the regional plan,” he said. “In the past government policy has shown little regard for our cultural heritage. We want to see a cultural plan, but it is not in there. “No such plan exists today and it is not acknowledged in this current Cape York Regional Plan.” Mr Lyall said Monday’s meeting gave Traditional Own-

ers an opportunity to “draw lines on maps to widen the Strategic Environment Areas (SEAs)” but didn’t give a great deal of protection to the Laura Rock Art Gallery. “I believe cultural heritage and environmental values to be one in the same but unfortunately the government does not see it that way and never puts them in the same boat,” Mr Lyall said. “We hold our cultural values in really high regard. For me cultural heritage comes first – that’s our vision statement – and we do not see it in this plan.” Joy Marriott a pastoralist and former Cattleman’s Association and Agforce representative said Mr Kempton was “receptive” at the Lakeland meeting. “He took on board that we were genuine in our belief that we were not consulted (as local stakeholders) about the plan.” “We also discussed the lack of cultural values referenced in the Cape York Regional Plan,” she said.

Cape York meetings a ‘step in the right direction’: Kempton DaviD Kempton, Member for Cook, has described Monday’s meeting with the Traditional Owners of the Laura Rock art in as a “big step in the right direction” in relation to the draft Cape York Regional Plan. Mr Kempton travelled to Laura on March 24 for a face to face meeting with a group of about 25 locals. He explained that the proposed amendments to the plan would protect the iconic rock art from mining. “The greater the protection the tighter the restrictions on other uses of the land,” Mr Kempton said. “I am confident that through discussions like these we will get the balance right.” He said that although the deadline for submissions closed today it was an ongoing process

and he would continue to work with the group on the proposed mapping and land use conditions. “This meeting was about the specific issue of protecting the Laura rock art and by no means represents widespread discontent by Traditional Owners throughout Cape York over the plan,” Mr Kempton said. “I have not been contacted by any other group.” He said he was confident he could work with the people of Laura to achieve the “best outcome for everyone.” Mr Kempton also held a second meeting with farmers at Lakeland where it was agreed that mining and tourism contributed to economic diversity. “However where there is an interaction with these sorts of activities and farming it is very

important to ensure that the good farming country be protected and the integrity of the water supply is guaranteed,” he said. “It is important in the Lakeland basin that we get the mapping and land use codes right,” he said. “I will continue to work closely

with the Lakeland farmers around these issues and am confident that we will reach the right result.” Mr Kempton said he would now take the matters raised yesterday to the Deputy Premier and ensure they were taken into account in the planning process.

news Weipa Girl Guides looking for new Leader Weipa Girl Guides is calling for any interested women in the community who wish to become Girl Guide Leaders to make themselves known. The Weipa Unit is looking for a new Leader, as Jess Warner, referred to by her Guide name ‘Bilby’ is stepping down to spend more time with her family. Bilby, re-established Girl Guides in Weipa in April 2009 after a strong history of Guides in the community. Girl Guides in Weipa has been running since the 1970s and over the past four years, Weipa Guides have attended

two Regional Camps, hosted two local camps, many sleep overs, activity days where girls have participated in Wide Games and organised many bake sales. Currently Weipa has two Guides Units, one Gumnut Unit led by Ali Scott, (Frog) and one Guide Unit led by Bilby. Bilby’s Unit meets on Wednesday afternoon from 4.30 to 6.30pm at the Council Chambers and has eight girls aged 7-12. They are currently not taking any new members until a new Leader is found. Girl Guides offers girls the opportunity to have fun and par-

ticipate in values-based training in life skills, decision-making and leadership development. Best of all, you don’t need to be a qualified Leader – on the job coaching and training is provided by Guides Queensland. “We are looking for someone who has a passion of having fun, a sense of humour and is very organised,” said Bilby. “The position provides training with a Guiding partner so you don’t need to have Guide experience just be 100 per cent committed to being a Guide Leader, which is a volunteer and unpaid position,” The position would suit

someone wanting to get their daughter involved in Guides or someone with a passion for community service. Anyone interested in the position is invited to email Weipagirlguides@hotmail.com or visit on Wednesday evening to meet and see what Girl Guides do. “Working full time and trying to find time to spend with my young son has been extremely difficult whilst in the position, so although it’s with a heavy heart I step down, I know it will be temporary until my children grow a little and become more independent,” Bilby said.

SPEAK UP: New speech pathologist for Cape York Speech therapy services are in high demand on cape York. apunipima cape York health council’s new speech pathologist amanda Wilson had 100 referrals in her first week. Amanda holds the first ever full-time speech therapy position for the Cape and says demand far outweighs supply. “Cape York has a greater need for speech pathology due to high rates of hearing impairments from ear infections, developmental delay from Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and a range of health issues associated with chronic disease. “There are many people who speak one or multiple Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages meaning

learning in English can be more challenging.” Amanda, as part of Apunipima’s Maternal and Child Health team, works with children and their families but says many adults need speech therapy services as well. “We know that there are

still huge gaps in services for adults and in the areas of Cape York we don’t cover.” Amanda has made a submission into the Senate Inquiry into the Prevalence of Different Types of Speech, Language and Communication Disorders and Speech Pathology Services in Australia to highlight the need for more speech therapy services on Cape York. “The Senate Inquiry came about to investigate the huge social and economic impacts of communication and swallowing disorders in Australia. These disabilities are often invisible and silent and have significant life-long impact on the individuals, communities and significant financial burdens on government supports and services.

“I thought this was a great opportunity to highlight the needs of people in Cape York communities. It is important to give a voice to people with communication disabilities, particularly those who don’t share the same cultural or language background as policy makers.” Amanda said. “I wanted to discuss the significant life-long impact of communication disabilities and the effect on determinants of health which are essential to closing the gap. “Addressing communication difficulties early in life has huge potential for improving people’s education, health, employment outcomes and social and emotional wellbeing.”

Mayors opposed to proposed Hospital Board By Aaron Smith TSIRC Mayor Fred Gela and Torres Shire Mayor Pedro Stephens are united in their stand against the proposed amalgamated Health Board being imposed upon the region by the Queensland Government on July 1. It will see the Torres Strait and NPA joined with the rest of the Cape, and community leaders fear it will further erode medical services to the area. “It’s another rushed job by the Government, where they are implementing something at the blink of an eye,” Mayor Gela said. While Mayor Stephen said: “They can’t expect community to be willingly involved with something they do not own or support in the first instance.” T h e To r r e s a n d C a p e Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) will replace the Cape York HHS and the Torres Strait-Northern Peninsula HHS. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said they are looking for Expressions of Interest from qualified people who wish to be considered for board membership, and Bob McCarthy, Cape York HHS Chair, has been given the job of sugar-coating the bitter pill. He returned for a second visit to the Torres Strait and the NPA last week. “We need to get this up and running. “We can get the experts and

TSIRC Mayor Fed Gela.

Torres Shire Mayor Pedro Stephens.

the academics, but what we need to know then is what the community really wants. I am sure many of the issues will be around improving preventative medicine,” Mr McCarthy said. “We are fair dinkum about this if the community is. “What I really want Mr Gela, Mr Stephen and (TSRA Chairman) Mr Joseph Elu to do, as the three key leaders in the community, plus any other key people in the community, is to tell us what are the five things that keep them awake at night from a health point of view.” For Cr Gela and Cr Stephen it would have to be the very structure of the amalgamated board that worries them. Cr Gela said: “We are very much concerned about the composition of the board. If the board will be focussing on the strategic delivery of service, how will they really know what is going on around the community and that the grassroots voice is heard by them.

“The bottom line is services in the region are falling over, so it needs to be asked who is at the top of the pecking order, it’s the CEO, and who is the CEO who will control the board. So how do we get the commitment that the grassroots voice will filter up and that there will be a reasonable level of engagement between the board and the community.” Cr Gela said that these concerns were raised during a previous conversation with Minister Springborg. “The Minister’s comment to us at that time was it is still too far off to establish a board, but that he would come back and talk to us again before any decisions were made and respond to us in writing what HSS Board would actually look like, but that didn’t eventuate. “He failed to honour his commitment,” Mr Gela said. “Our concerns then, and now, are the legislative make up of the composition of the board “What we requested then

is that amendments be made that look at Torres Strait and the NPA which acknowledged that we do have the academics and that we need to ensure our representation needs are met.” Mr McCarthy acknowledged that he was not in a position to fulfil Cr Gela’s request and that Cr Gela would need to consult the Minister about those concerns. However he doubted it would sway the Minister’s position. Mr McCarthy also admitted there will only be so much the new board can do. “We will limited to a degree with what we can do as the pot is only so big; it’s not a magic pudding,” Mr McCarthy said. Cr Gela said: “This was another worry we flagged to Mr McCarthy; the methodology of distribution of the combined budget of $160 million. “Also we have concerns of federal funding allocated over a four year period for the area under treaty provision, will that be managed separately?” Mr McCarthy is determined to get the bones of the Board established by mid-May, so he can cover most of the bases of the legislation and have the first meeting on or around July 1. “I don’t want a debating society with 50 people in the room with conflicting views, what I need is 8-10 people

I can talk to regularly that represent the interests of the community where we can have a reasonable conversation,” Mr McCarthy said. “The requirements of the legislation is the board must have a medico, a nurse, and we will be looking for someone with business skills, people involved in the community, and people with financial skills and legal skills.” Mr McCarthy said people that have already applied are welcome to re-apply. “Just because we have not contacted them does not mean we will no reconsider their application. If they were to let us know they previously applied and are still interested, there is no need to redo all the paper work,” he said. Minister Springborg said the selection and appointment process was governed by legislation and required strict adherence to set guidelines and appointments would be announced following this process. Mayor Stephen said he told Mr McCarthy that, “even if we get involved with bringing community voice to this amalgamated board they will be given authority over something that is not theirs. “I met with (Member for Cook) David Kempton recently and he said the State is looking at empowering Cape

York Aboriginal community health service Apunipima, and he suggested we adopt a similar structure. “I then told him that they adopted the structure from the existing Torres Strait and NPA HSS Board model, which he said he didn’t know. “The government has thrown the baby out with the bath water and will create something which is totally not community. “I will not be caught up with the time frame of the government come July 1. “I am going to stand with Fred Gela on this, as this board will not be ours,” Mr Stephen said. Cr Gela said: “Pedro and I will be standing collectively and submitting something to the Minister, just to highlight the previous commitment he promised and our formal requests that were previously submitted to him.” “We will be definitely pursuing it again politically. “The TSIRC are not arguing with the composition of the board, we just wanted an amendment that would ensure that there is a representation of the two mayors and the TSRA Chair. “The mechanisms of the past had the two mayors, the TSRA Chair, NGO representatives, Queensland Government and the Health department all at the table. CAPS ADOPT A DOG DAY OUT

Policewomen inspiring change: JACQUI KISSEL Plain Clothes Senior Constable Jacqueline Kissel kicked off her Policing career when she was sworn into the Queensland Police Service in August 2004. She was appointed to the Innisfail Police station for her first year on the job training... JACQUI worked her way up the coast and settled at Edmonton Station where she performed first response duties and got her first taste of working in plain clothes at the Edmonton Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). It was then that she realised she was hooked on the idea of branching out into plain clothes. A three-week relieving stint in Weipa saw Jacqui love the community and made her sign up for a two year tenure period as soon as she got home to Edmonton. Jacqui packed up her young family and headed north to Weipa for a further two years performing a variety of jobs as a first response uniform officer. That first few years in uniform saw her gain the experience required to secure a permanent position within the Weipa CIB as a Plain Clothes Senior Constable. Looking back at her career, Jacqui says, “I must say that the last ten years have flown by and I have really enjoyed my job. “I love that I was fully supported while having my two children and was able to come back and further my career in the Criminal Investigation Branch. “I enjoy the challenges of working in the Cape and love that I get to do the majority of the job myself including the initial scene analysis.” Jacqui has been involved in a number of crime scenes but rates a luxury yacht as a unique change to the stock standard home or street in her community. When asked about her favourite part of the job, she was adamant, “I still believe the best part of the job is the like minded people I work with.” Weipa CIB covers a large area including four indigenous

communities as well as the Cape communities of Coen and Weipa. Jacqui quite rightly points out, “I’m lucky to be exposed to general CIB work like property offences, drug matters, serious and sexual assaults as well as jobs involving juvenile crime and child protection investigations, so my job is never boring.” From uniform to plain clothes is a big change, but becoming an appointed detective takes time, experience and a dedication to the craft. At present Jacqui is working her way through the extra study and assessments and hopes to secure her appointment by the end of next year. Family life in Weipa is a very good fit for Jacqui and her family. Her husband is loving his regular fishing and hunting trips and she expects that any attempts to move from Weipa in the future will be a hard one for the family to come to grips with. Both her daughter aged seven and son, five have spent most of their childhood living in Weipa so they have their own little network of friends. Juggling a career and a young family seems to be a consistent theme for our Policewomen and the issues are endless. “Some days I feel like my main job is an event planner as I’m constantly juggling life. “Organising two school aged children, their numerous co-curricular activities, housework, my husband, work and some level of fitness is hard work,” Jacqui says. Jacqui does have a livein nanny to help out as their remote location away from family support has been difficult. Regardless of what’s gone on each day, she points

out she always hits the pillow exhausted. At no point in her career has Jacqui ever wanted to pack up and leave. Even when she was on maternity leave after having each of her children, she was keen and ready to get back to work. Jacqui is quick to recommend Policing as a career for both men and women.“This is a very rewarding career. You are constantly challenged and have an opportunity to plan your career to suit your changing lifestyle,” she says. “You get to work among great like minded people and overall you get a great satisfaction from helping others on a daily basis.” With her experience under her belt, Jacqui has some

valuable advice for working women and says, “There’s only 24 hours in a day and often as a modern working Mum you want to have a clean house, well cared for children, a productive career, be fit and healthy and attend numerous social events but sometimes you have to concede that it all doesn’t fit into one day and you can only do the best you can. I firmly believe that you can’t sweat the small stuff.” Jacqui’s take on life is very refreshing and she says she loved a quote by an unknown person, “Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming “Holy S@#! what a ride!”

Back in the Day the town of Croydon is located approximately 560 kilometres west of Cairns, in the midst of the area now known as the Gulf Savannah. The general area which now comprises Croydon was once a large pastoral holding, covering more than five thousand square kilometres when first settled in the 1880s. The name Croydon is derived from Croydon Pastoral Run, which was originally operated by Alexander and William Chalmers Brown, who were said to have been born in the English town of Croydon. Gold was discovered here in 1885, by James and Walter Aldridge, who had previously been working and prospecting on the Etheridge Field before moving into the Croydon area. By 1887, Croydon was well established as a settlement, with a population of around seven thousand. At this time the town supported four general stores, a bakery, several hotels and banks, two newspapers as well as a school. Initially, Croydon was linked to Port Douglas on the coast by Cobb and Co but this communication route was eventually superseded by a rail line,

with Croydon as its terminus, which was opened in 1891. This line, now known as the Gulflander, remains operational today as a tourist railway. In addition to this rail link, the closest port to Croydon was Normanton, providing access to shipping. Croydon reached its peak in around 1900, when it was said to have been the fourth largest town in Queensland. The town evolved to become the centre of a number of smaller settlements and camps that had sprung up adjacent to the various mines workings in the area. These mining operations and settlements included Croydon King, Tabletop, Iquana Hill, Golden Valley and True Blue mines. The Golden Gate mine was to be one of the most productive in the region. During the period of greatest mining activity, more than 750,000 ounces of gold and 800,000 ounces of silver were taken from the various Croydon mine workings. This image shows J. O’Donohue’s Croydon bakery in around 1890, with the adjoining structure to the left of the image possibly being his residence.

The people were truly sorry when they realised what they did to Jesus, and that’s because their eyes were at last opened to who he really was the Son of God the true Messiah. They became baptised as an outer show of an inner acceptance of Jesus into their heart and they didn’t stop there. V 42 says that they wanted to really understand what the Kingdom of God was all about; they wanted to mix with fellow believers and

join in their meals and prayers, something that all new believers can learn from. They paid tithing to the church and fellowship that provided for spiritual and physical needs like teaching and meals, and built strong relationships. Don’t think that problems did not arise among believers though! The Evil One and Christian’s own human nature ensured that believers didn’t see eye to eye at times, which would have been bewildering to new believers. (Read Phil 4 v 2 eg)

That’s why all believers, from the young to the Elders, had to be taught the kind of attitude God required of believers towards one another, such as recorded in James Ch 5 vs 1-11. All Christians over time had to realise that the Kingdom of God is not here yet in its fullness, but that they live in the tension between the “now and the not yet” where the Kingdom of God is here now, but not yet here in all its fullness. (Hint of fullness to come given in verse 4). Jesus is Lord. Rev Michael Connolly

Market day success for WAGS By Rosa Murray

A big thumbs up to the Pebbles Playgroup Committee and all those involved in organising the Weipa Children’s Marvellous Morning Markets. It was a great morning for locals to come and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and also take advantage of the many bargains on offer at all the stalls. It was a great success for all involved, and I’m sure very enjoyable to all those who attended. Weipa WAGS would like to personally thank and acknowledge some very special stallholders – a huge thank

you to Julie who spent her morning painting countless little faces, and also Jarvis, Milly and Marley Marshall who spent their morning selling their handmade rainbow bands. These amazing people generously donated their hard earned money to the RFDS. Also, a big thank you to those people who helped us out by baking and donating their most popular and highly sought after cakes and slices. Thanks Weipa for a great Market Day! Make sure to keep Saturday, May 10 free for a fun filled Family Afternoon. See page 5 of this edition of the Western Cape Bulletin or follow us on facebook for more details.

First forum features mine’s 2014 priorities

LAst tuesday, 18 March, Rio tinto Alcan Weipa kicked off its first community forum for the year, where an overview of the mine’s 2013 performance and activities was a drawcard for 45 residents. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager, Operations, Gareth Manderson, said 2013 was a good year for the mine, and he was pleased to share some highlights with the broader community. “Even though last year was challenging due to uncertainty in global markets, our people have pulled together to deliver significant improvements in our productivity, and I can see the beginning of a positive shift in

our safety performance,” Mr Manderson said. “Work at our Port and Andoom Plant in particular has contributed to achieving another year of record production, with over 26.4 million tonnes shipped—approximately 13 per cent more than the previous year,” he said. The mine’s 2014 priorities piqued interest, including an overview about how the Weipa site fits into the bigger Rio Tinto picture, pre-mining activities which are commencing in parts of East Weipa, and an update about the South of Embley Project. Also discussed was how the mine will continue to support

the WTA in delivering Weipa’s Community Plan. Highlighted, was a recent positive outcome with the WTA committing over $300,000 to provide new playground and fitness equipment for the community. “I encourage those unable to attend the community forum to provide feedback on our activities and the operations in general, so that we can effectively shape our future forums and choose relevant key topics,” Mr Manderson said. To provide feedback, or for more information about topics discussed at the forum, phone our freecall community hotline 1800 707 633 or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com

Aurukun community celebrates funding for Men’s Shed the Federal government last week announced funding of $138,000 for a Men’s shed in Aurukun. The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and the Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch, said a key priority for the Government was to ensure that as many Indigenous people as possible are working in real jobs. “The Community Development Fund provides funding to organisations to deliver projects that support social and economic development and participation in remote communities such as Aurukun,” Minister Scullion said. “The Fund assists service providers, employers and community organisations to create new jobs and deliver rewarding community activities.” Mr Entsch said the funding will be of major benefit to local Indigenous men and youth, as it will enable Mensheds Australia to build a Men’s Shed in Aurukun and deliver much-needed activities and practical projects. “The services offered through Mensheds Australia will help to

deal with issues caused by social isolation, alcohol and other substance abuse, while re-empowering men to be better fathers, mentors and leaders,” Mr Entsch said. “It will also put in place the processes needed to create longterm and sustainable men’s groups. “Mensheds Australia will provide training and development opportunities to make people more employable, and to build health, morale and self-esteem. It’ll also support men and youth who are coming out of prison or detention, which can be a difficult transition period. “Real jobs will be created during the building of the shed, the landscaping of the grounds and the ongoing management of the facility. Participants can also use their experience to gain a Certificate II in Construction, which is a fantastic opportunity. “Ten paid positions and training will be available for local Indigenous people, including engagement of a local Indigenous Coordinator into a full-time role,” Mr Entsch ended.

Huntsman spiders – friend not foe: look out for huntsman spiders in Western Cape AS the weather begins to cool off slightly, you’ll spend more time in your home and car. The huntsman spider is also starting to spend more time indoors as it hunts for insects before their food starts to hibernate. As a result, you’ll soon start to notice the often unloved huntsman spider in cracks and crevices or running across the dashboard of your car. Don’t panic! The huntsman spider is actually your buddy, and cannot seriously hurt you. Their bark is worse than their bite. In Queensland at the moment, keep an eye out for the Sydney Huntsman which is grey and often has black stripe on top of its abdomen, the Brown Huntsman with a distinctive black X on its head, the Queensland Grey Huntsman, the Golden Huntsman and the Giant Huntsman. “The huntsman is well known to many Australian households and not necessarily in a positive way,” said Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “This infamy is probably a result of the great sizes they can grow to—up to 15 cms in some species!—and the unfortunate habit they have

of hiding in cars and the corners of rooms.” “However, while they may look intimidating with their hairy legs and large pincers, they’re actually not at all dangerous to humans and are very timid. Even so, most people will have their horror stories of an unfortunate huntsman encounter they were not expecting,” Ms Bradshaw said. “The reason you might find one hiding behind your sun visor in the car is because they love hiding behind tree bark in their natural environment outside. You’ll spot them on the ceiling because that’s where they find other insects, which are a perfect dinner for the huntsman,” said Ms Bradshaw. “Huntsmans are easily disturbed and can move very fast, which is not a good combination for people scared of spiders.” “Huntsman spiders are actually very handy to have in your garden because they will work to keep the insect numbers down,” said Ms Bradshaw. “The huntsman spiders are lone hunters and stalk all sorts of creepy crawlies that you won’t want in your property, such as cockroaches, other spiders and

even mosquitoes.” If you discover that you have a friendly neighbourhood huntsman spider in your house or car, the best thing you can do is remain calm. A huntsman cannot seriously hurt you, and they are also scared of you! If you are driving when you spot one, you must try not to panic. Many people have had accidents when these spiders appear mid-journey. Pull over when it is safe to do so and figure out a safe way to evict your eight-legged passenger. Tips for dealing with a huntsman • As they can move very quickly, instead of using a broom or an object they can run along to move them, try to slowly and gently place a container over them and push a piece of paper underneath. You can now carry them safely outside to release them. • Huntsman spiders have very flat bodies that allow them to squeeze under doors or through cracks. Fill cracks, and attach a door sweep if you do have gaps under doors. • Watch out for spiders trying to enter your home or car particularly after rain. The

moisture drives them to find dry areas, like our homes. Keep your windows closed if it looks like it might rain. • If you really don’t want huntsman spiders around, then let natural predators take care of it for you. Spider wasps sting huntsmans and Funnel-webs, and drag the paralysed spiders back to their nests. They lay an egg on the spider, and when it hatches, the huntsman becomes lunch! Spider wasps live singly, not in a nest, and are not aggressive to humans. “The Social Huntsman gets its name from its endearing social behaviours. These spiders actually prefer to live in large social groups of up to 300 spiders. Some of the spiders will bring back insects they have captured for the rest of the colony to eat.” said Ms Bradshaw. “The larger Social Huntsman spiders will defend the colony against any predators, usually other spiders or ants. There are only 60 known species of social spiders out of the 42,000 known spiders in the world,” explained Ms Bradshaw “and a lovely little joke to leave you with: what do spiders eat in Paris? French flies!”

Facts you might not know about huntsman spiders • The largest and most colourful type of huntsman spiders was discovered very recently. In 2006 the Tiger Huntsman was found in far north Queensland. While it is still waiting for official classification, they can be seen at the Bugs Alive! exhibition in Melbourne Museum. • The Social Huntsman is also called the Avondale spider because it has been introduced to Avondale in New Zealand. This is the spider they cast to bite Peter Parker in the 2002 Spiderman movie. • Not everything is always as it seems with the huntsman. In order to grow, they need to shed their skin so the big scary

spider you are looking at, might in fact just be its shell. To be a buddy for the huntsman spider here’s what you can do. To see if huntsman spiders are in your area, please consult the Atlas of Living Australia. You can search your location and see what species have been seen in it, or you can search by type of animal, click the occurrence records and display these on a map of Australia. For local information, please contact the Wildlife Officer or Bushcare Coordinator at your local council, or speak to a ranger at your nearest national park office.

SUDOKU No. 191

Your  Lucky 



 

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) There has been complete chaos at your house for too long. You must make a better effort to coordinate your schedule and tackle projects early. Romance. You will be very popular this week; especially with members of the opposite sex. Be careful of unforeseen jealousies, however.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A meeting with a stranger will turn out to be much more entertaining than you’d expect. It’ll make you want to get out more often! Romance. When things don’t go just the way you would like, there will be trouble. If your partner is wasting your time, they will wish that they had not done so!

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

FOR KIDS

Before you start criticising your boss for something they have done, consider the consequences. This is not the best time to take a risk with your career. Romance. A surprising comment from your partner may shock you for a while. Try to hide your feelings about this for the moment.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Other people may try to slow you down don’t let them. At times this week, you will have to march ahead at your own pace. Prepare to walk alone. Romance. This would be an excellent time for a trip away from home. You need the chance to spend some time alone with your partner.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You may be a little less conscientious about your work than you are normally. This would be a good time to take a break. Romance. Someone that you know very well may be giving you the wrong kind of advice about your relationship. Be wary of what is said to you this week!

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You may be feeling a little cut-off from other people this week. Use this time to get ahead of things and you will have more time to spend later. Romance. You may be feeling a little insecure. If you are prepared to “stick to your guns”, you will be able to improve an upcoming difficult situation.

FINDWORD No. 191 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Don’t allow yourself to be led astray by a false promise. If possible, ask a friend for their opinion. You shouldn’t be so trusting! Romance. Try to inject some passion into your relationship. If you are not careful, you could become complacent. Or worse, your partner could become bored.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Don’t take the credit for everything: somebody who helped you recently may need more encouragement than you realise. You can have the spotlight at a later time. Romance. You’ll lose an important opportunity if you don’t decide what to do. Any decision will be better than none.

MUDDY RIVER

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) You mustn’t allow yourself to be held back by other people’s negativity. You have plenty to do and need to overcome their scepticism. Be strong! Romance. A short day-trip with your mate will proof fruitful. It’ll give you time to catch up on things you normally don’t have time to talk about.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You may have become frustrated with your exercise routine. Infuse it with something new; such as a yoga or spin class. Romance. A favourable aspect between your Ruling Planet and Mars will give your love-life an extra boost of passion. You’ll be left daydreaming about this!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

ROUND one is now complete, however that works after two weeks of footy. My humans were very excited that Thursday night footy was back and they tell me that it is on again this Thursday so even more days of yelling at the telly in our house each week. The Cats (not the Felines I Am Forced To Live With) but the footy ones on TV, showed they are every bit a chance of being up there in the mix at season’s end. My humans kept singing ‘Jimmy Bartell and I don’t care’, so I don’t know what planet they were on as myself, the commentators and everyone else thought he had a blinder in his 250th game for the Cats. I remember my 250th day with the Felines I Am Forced To Live With and things were only just improving, so does this mean the best of Jimmy is yet to come? Bomber Thompson showed that he can inspire any team that he is in charge of and was very happy to have Chappy back playing under him as they steadily worked their way over the top of the Roos (I didn’t see any Skippys out there but gee a lot of them could jump high! Couldn’t see them getting caught in a barbedwire fence). Hirdy and his missus appear to be getting themselves into deeper water with a summons to the Essendon board last night. The Hawks made the final score look like the Lions weren’t even in the game but at midway through the third term they were within two points. My human dad and his mates were cheering hard and full of excitement til about midway through the fourth quarter when they realised that the next gear up for the Hawks was too fast for the Lions. They should have taken my lead and retired outside before three quarter time when their team still had a glimmer of hope. They’ll learn. It was a tough tussle on Saturday night when Roosy and the Demons took on Saint Nick and his merry men. Saint Nick may have stood tall and been the dominant player on the night but the Dees are showing a glimmer of fight and structure now Roosy is the master. If they can kick the footy between the big sticks then they will start troubling other teams. It is a long way to win kicking behinds all day. Reminds me of the Collywobbles days a few years ago when I was just a pup. As they say what happened in the West stays in the West. That is the Dogs mantra and I am backing them all the way…woof…woof. I can assure you that no Dog will lay down, not even for a bird soaring overhead and McCartney will get them up and running again against Scotty’s Roos this Sunday arvo. My game of the round this weekend is GWS against the Saints. Those kids from out West will be flying high after winning the battle of the bridges derby. And the big question is can the Skivvy flower boys get up over the other Riewoldt and his band of merry men and I think the Hawks will sink there talons into the Bombers. NRL TIPPER’S SCOREBOARD

NRL wrap-up with Karl

Plenty of close games THIS round was one of very close score lines, as teams begin to find form and get over their start of season woes. On Friday night the Roosters just snuck home against the Broncos with a come-frombehind try in the final minutes, and the in-form Tigers pulled the upset of the round with a win over the Rabbitohs. On Super Saturday the close scoring games continued with the much-improved Panthers getting up over the Bulldogs, the top of the table Dragons holding out the Sharks, and the Warriors beating the Cowboys at home. On Sunday the Sea Eagles were lucky to beat the Eels, and the Titans had a good win over the Raiders. Monday night’s game was another good battle with the Storm coming up winners against the Knights. As a preview into round 4, on Friday night the Roosters will take on the Sea Eagles, then the Dragons will go into battle against the Broncos. Super Saturday will see the Bulldogs go head to head with the Storm, the Warriors and Tigers play, and the Eels verse the Panthers. On Sunday the Rabbitohs will line up against the Raiders, and then the Knights will look for a win over the Sharks. Monday night’s game will see an allQueensland derby, with the Titans and the Cowboys playing. Karl’s Tips: Roosters, Dragons, Storm, Tigers, Eels, Raiders, Sharks, Cowboys. Target species elude Weipa Sportfishing Club members

It may not have been the target species but Weipa Sportfishing Club’s Frenchy landed this nice Queenfish.

On the weekend of March 15 and 16 the Weipa Sportfishing Club held it’s monthly competition. The target species for the weekend was Threadfin Salmon, and although a few were seen no matter how hard members tried they could not entice a bite out of them.

Four Club members did participate and weighed in a variety of fish. Gaven Roberts fished very light line (1kg) and managed to land two Blue Salmon and had a couple of releases to record a winning total of 527 points. Phil Aspinall fished hard for the target species and was frustrated by their lack of interest, but still

Glenda Brooks and Frenchy on a double hook-up during the Weipa Sportfishing Club’s March competition.

managed to weigh-in a Queenfish. Simone and I fished on the Sunday and took out former club members Mick and Glenda Brooks who were up visiting from Tolga. We had a bit of bottom bash which produced Tusker, Trevally and Estuary Cod before moving back into the leads where we found large Queenfish harassing schools

of bait. In between squalls we managed to land a good number of strong fighting fish on 4 and 6 kg. There was a good turnout at the weigh-in at Malcolm and Jaylene Slack’s house. Sean Slack was presented with his 2013 Sub Junior Champions Shield by club president Phil. The next outing will be on

April 12 and 13 and the target species is Fingermark. Weigh-in will be at 5.30pm on Sunday, April 13 at the French’s, 50 Circular Way. Anyone interested in checking out the club are most welcome to attend the weigh-in and BYO barbecue. – Cheers, Frenchy

THE place to stay in Cairns!

2014 shaping up to be a bumper year doing quite well is the Classic F18 +8 Barra and my old favourite the Killalure Flatz Rat +10 09 colour. There have been some good Prawns about, but they are very hit and miss – one day plenty, the next none, but keep looking. The knot this week is the Perfection Loop (illustrated below), commonly used when lure fishing. I think it should be used whether using lures or bait. I see many fishing shows showing knots that restrict the hook if pulled tight to the hook, and I will bet they don’t use the Perfection Knot. The Weipa Billfish Club have a tournament running from April 7 to 14 and you can fish any consecutive two days within this period. I will make sure I have all the details in next week’s Bulletin. Until then enjoy your fishing.

I know the ramps can be a bit hectic at times, but a little bit of patience and respect goes a long way to having a great day. Good luck to all you operators, you generate a lot of money into this town. I have been asked a hundred times “where are all the Fingermark biting?” Answer – get a marine chart of the area, get on the contour lines, look for 70 feet of water with a rubbly bottom and you should find fish. I would give you a GPS mark but I didn’t record one the last time I was out. Not only are there good schools of Fingermark out there, but also pods of Tuna,
