DUBLIN-born chef, restaurateur and My Kitchen Rules judge was in Weipa this week, thanks to the generosity of Goodline directors John and Catherine Kennedy. The Kennedy’s successfully bid on Colin through an auction facilitated by

Channel 7 to assist Aussie farmers through the Little Aussie Helpers volunteer organisation. Their prize was a dinner experience for 10 people where Colin cooks in your home, anywhere in Australia. While in Weipa Colin also spent a morning with top achievers from the

Western Cape College’s hospitality program, conducting a cooking demonstration and information session at the College’s Residential Campus on Tuesday morning. Catherine said she was looking forward to her specially created meal

He encouraged the students to stay in school, choose a career and get qualified. “Once you have that piece of paper in your hand to say you’re qualified you can go anywhere in the world, and do anything you want,” he told the students. While a camera crew filmed the Western Cape College session Colin took questions from the students, teachers and parents who attended the morning – and despite a lot of questions about MKR he would not divulge the eventual winners of the popular series. Colin, who operates two Sydney restaurants Four In Hand in Paddington, and

FORMER Weipa Town Authority Chief Executive Officer Ian Pressley has been appointed as the Acting Chief Operating Ofﬁcer for Cape York Health Service (HHS). Cape York Hospital and Health Board Chair Bob McCarthy said Mr Pressley’s role would be to “be responsible for the overall management of services, as distinct from doctors, nurses and other medical staff”. “We want to give more responsibility to local health services which will in turn create more employment opportunities in regional areas, and that’s were Ian’s role comes in,” Mr McCarthy said. Dr Jill Newland has also been appointed Acting Chief Executive for the Cape York Hospital and Health Service. Dr Newland has 31 years’

experience with Queensland Health in north Queensland and was previously the Executive Director of the Rural and Remote Clinical Support Unit and the Acting Executive Director of Medical Services for Cape York HHS. Her appointment follows the resignation of Susan Turner who has led Cape York HHS for four and a half years. Cape York HHS will be amalgamating with Torres Strait–Northern Peninsula HHS on July 1 and will then become part of the newly formed Torres and Cape HHS. Recruitment is currently under way for a permanent Chief Executive to lead the new Torres and Cape HHS from July. Cape York seeing high rates of influenza before they may be exposed to influenza. “In Australia, outbreaks of influenza of varying severity occur every year, usually between May and September. “Anyone who had the vaccine last year is no longer protected from influenza and will need to have another shot. “Influenza is highly contagious and can be spread for up to a day before symptoms appear and for up to five days afterwards.

Cape York has the highest rate of influenza notifications per 100,000 of population in Queensland. A total of 52 cases of influenza have been notified within the Cape York Hospital and Health service for the year to date to April 1. Cape York Hospital and Health Service Acting Chief Executive Dr Jill Newland said this represented a rate of about 361 notifications per 100,000 of population. The rate for Queensland as a whole is about 28 notifications per 100,000 of population. Dr Newland said the high rate of influenza notifications on the Cape compared to population was worrying, given that this year’s influenza season was shaping up to be worse than last year, especially in tropical parts of the State. “Up to April 1, we have already had 1261 notifications of influenza in Queensland, which is 2.3 times the five-year mean for the year to date period which is 549.8 notifications,’’ she said. “I urge all Cape York residents to see their doctor or go to their local primary health care centres and have their influenza vaccinations and make sure their children also are vaccinated. “The earlier they have the vaccination, the better chance they have of gaining immunity

a week, although a cough and tiredness may persist. “It is important that people visit their doctor or clinic as soon as possible to receive treatment, and then stay away from work until they feel better,’’ Dr Newland said. “If your child becomes unwell, keep them out of childcare or school until their symptoms clear up.’’ Influenza is a highly contagious disease caused by infection from influenza type A or B (or rarely C) viruses. These viruses infect the upper airways and lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. So far this year, 85 per cent of notifications have been of the Type A virus and 15 per cent of the Type B virus. Of Type A, H1N1 (commonly known as swine flu) is the predominant subtype identified and also was the predominant subtype identified in the northern hemisphere in their latest flu season.

Official opening of the Sam Kerindun Snr Business Precinct THE remote Indigenous township of Aurukun on Cape York last week opened its first business precinct, a communitydriven initiative to help build economic opportunities. The Mayor of Aurukun Shire Council, Derek Walpo said the precinct in the heart of the small town has attracted major tenants such as Rio Tinto and the Department of Public Housing and Works, and community organisation APN, which signals confidence in the community’s future. “Until now most services such as the bank and the post office were all based at the Council office. These facilities are now part of the Aurukun Business Precinct. It is good to have the capacity to offer professional offices for important tenants such

as Rio Tinto, APN and Bendigo,” said Cr Walpo. “Before now our town of 1400 people had one grocery store and a small takeaway outlet that opened limited hours only on week days. We now have new food services seven days a week,” Cr Walpo said. In addition to the professional ofﬁces, the Business Precinct is home to a bakery, café, light retail, and laundromat. “It has created approximately 20 jobs, and new locally owned and operated enterprise,” the Mayor said. “This is a small step towards our strategy to create a better lifestyle for Aurukun people, and to provide the infrastructure needed to build our economic base. “We have an enormously talented cultural art community,

world-class ﬁshing, and strong Wik families working on a range of new enterprises out on country. “The new business precinct provides the facilities our town needs to get ahead. “The building has been named after the late Sam Kerindun Snr, a much-loved community Elder, who had built his family home on the precinct site in the 1930s. He had an excellent vegetable garden on the site where the old general store was located. “His children Cr Edgar Kerindun, Deputy Mayor Angus Kerindun, Maryanne Kerindun and former Councillor Tony Kerindun will be participating in the opening ceremony. “We would like to thank the Federal and State governments for funding this initiative,” Mayor Walpo concluded.

Cape crusaders tackle domestic violence

LET’S look through Acts Ch 3 vs 11-26 now and pick out some more important points from these readings. The people were amazed at the healing power coming from Peter and John, and Peter was quick to point out that and the power for this healing came from the risen Lord Jesus Christ and backed up by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Naming God along with those three very important Jewish patriarchs left no doubt that Peter was not talking about another strange God, but the covenant

God of their Jewish ancestors.) (Exodus Ch 3 v 15). (Matthew Ch 22 vs 31-32). They are only the channels for this power. Peter and John saw the risen Lord Jesus themselves, and miracles happen when his name is used, and faith is put in him, and if there was no resurrection, there would be no Church. No resurrection, no hope. Once again he pulled no punches in telling them that they made a huge blunder when they chose a murderer over Jesus to be set free by Pontius Pilate, as though saying this is what sin can do. (Matthew

Ch 27 vs 15-26). Peter pointed out that God knew that they acted out of ignorance in the way they treated Jesus, and is willing to forgive them but they must repent, turn away from their sins, and accept Jesus as Saviour. That’s a picture of our lives, too, isn’t it? We were ignorant of the wrong things we did in the past, but God knows this and is asking us today to repent of our sins and come to accept Jesus his Son into our lives. More next week. He is risen. Call to join fisheries advisory committee APPLICATIONS to join the Ministerial Advisory Committee which will guide the state’s Fisheries Management Review have been called by the Queensland government. Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh said he was seeking applications from a broad range of individuals and groups with experience in all fishery sectors and regions. “The review of fisheries management in Queensland is years overdue, and I am determined to have wide input to achieve a balanced outcome,” Mr McVeigh said. “The Ministerial Advisory Committee will include people from across the recreational, commercial, indigenous, charter/tourism, seafood marketers and conservation sectors. “The selection process will also aim to achieve a spread across regions, knowledge and skill sets.” Mr McVeigh said the review was aimed at simplifying fisheries management, cutting red tape and improving sustainability of fish stocks. “The Queensland government is committed to finding solutions for better management, and this review

will help determine a new approach for our fisheries. It will focus on better managing our fisheries across the state, not individual rules or marine park boundaries. “The Advisory Committee will provide strategic advice - what is good and bad about the current system, and the principles to guide future management to better protect our resources. “We need a more flexible management system for commercial industry to prosper, but at the same time ensure that recreational and traditional fishers have reasonable access to fish stocks. “The bottom line is – this is about creating a better system to manage one of our most important natural resources – fisheries.” Expressions of interest for the Ministerial Advisory Committee close 14 April 2014. WeipA is the latest group to join the growing popularity amongst local communities to establish an e-Watch. An extension of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), the E-Watch concept enables members of the community to sign up to NHW by registering their email address to receive email alerts from Police in their community. Officer in Charge of the Weipa Police Station, Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins and Sergeant Alan Dewis were instrumental in forming Weipa E-Watch. Community members Rosie White and Peter Miller were eager to lend

a hand with Weipa E-Watch by undertaking the roles of Email and Facebook administrator. letter/news Heart disease deaths fall DEATHS from heart disease have fallen steadily since 2003, while deaths from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease continue to increase, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. “Heart disease is still the leading cause of death, with 20,046 deaths in 2012, however this has fallen steadily since 2003,” said ABS spokesman James EynstoneHinkins. He said that heart disease accounted for 14 per cent of all deaths in 2012, compared to 19 per cent of all deaths in 2003. “There were 10,779 deaths from cerebrovascular diseases (including haemorrhages, strokes, infarctions and blocked arteries of the brain) in 2012, making these

the second most common cause of death,” EynstoneHinkins said. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease was the third leading cause of death, accounting for 10,369 or seven per cent of all deaths in 2012, with 95 per cent of those occurring in people aged 75 or over. “For women, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease has overtaken cerebrovascular diseases as the second leading cause of death in 2012, while breast cancer remained the sixth most common cause of death,” he said. “For men, lung cancer remains the second leading cause of death. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is now the fifth leading cause, replacing prostate cancer which is now ranked sixth for males.

Weipa Catholic primary school seeks capital funding WEipA families should know in about three months’ time whether a new Catholic primary school will be built in the town, to open for enrolments in Term 1, 2016. Cairns Catholic Education Services Executive Director Br Paul Hough said a capital funding application to the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) was now under consideration. “We should know in June if the funding for the new school will be recommended to the State Education Minister,” he said. He said QCEC capital representatives would be in Weipa early next month to review the plans for the development and to assess the community’s need for the new school. Br Paul said a success-

ful funding outcome would see the school built in 2015 to open in 2016. It will be located on land adjacent to the Catholic Church in Boundary Road. It will probably be built in two stages and when complete be a single stream Prep-Year 6 school with about 180 students. “We plan to consult with the community further about whether we open as a Prep to Year 3 in the first year and build from there, or open as a Prep to Year 6 from the outset with some composite classes in the older grades,” he said. Br Paul said the school had already been accredited by the Non State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) and had development approval from the Weipa Town Authority. “We greatly appreciate the support from the com-

William Busch and Thomas Pitt represented Mapoon on the Cape York Turtle & Dugong taskforce convened through Balkanu. “For Mapoon people caring for their culturally significant animals, two of which are the Green Turtle and Dugong, is a high priority”, Mr Busch said. “That’s why we got all the hunters and Elders together to come up with the rules for the permit system. For many years we have been looking for a solution to take control of hunting and this new permit system sets it all out. “There are nine hunting rules that set out how we want to look after our animals that are important as food and medicine. Not only do we want to hunt them properly but have a strong breeding stock into the future.”

news Coen Snr Constable takes Mr February title for the Far North The winner of the February 2013-2014 Far North District Police Officer of the Year Award is Senior Constable Justin Heinemann from Coen Police Station . . .

RotaRy Club of Cairns President, Gail Seymour said judging for February was tough with a total of 14 nominations received by the judging panel. “Several of the nominations were for previously nominated officers, demonstrating that we have very dedicated Police Officers in our region doing outstanding work in their respective communities. “Justin has received three nominations from a variety of areas of the community, all identifying an officer who goes above and beyond. “His nominations describe his contribution to the Coen’s Men’s Group as outstanding; highly praise his after-hours work with at risk youth and community carers; recognise his contributions to the Coen community including the Rural Fire Brigade and SES and detail his close work with stakeholders and community groups to pro-actively raise the profile of Police. “He has also received recognition from several community elders, members of the public and the media for his efforts. “Justin demonstrates the qualities of service above self,

community engagement and upholding good policing values and is a very worthy recipient”. Justin was sworn into the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in January 2010 and was stationed in both Ferny Grove in Brisbane and Cairns, before heading to Cape York Peninsula. For the past two years, he has been stationed at Coen. “Community policing is an integral part of nurturing a happy balance in the community. It’s not all about going around charging people left right and centre. A lot of the time you work as a mediator between two parties to resolve issues,” Justin said. The two officers stationed at Coen are supported by Tracker Barry Port. The only back up they have is some three hours away so establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with community members is a must. “By building community networks and engaging with members of our community, I’m able to garner information that otherwise may not be volunteered.” “I think I’m approachable and fair and I find that people are more inclined to approach me and ask for assistance in matters that could potentially escalate into more serious incidences.” Justin said. When we quizzed Justin about his career aspirations he was quick to point out he has desires on the top job, Commissioner of Police. He also plans to keep moving throughout the Cape and said, “My tenure is up in April.

I love the lifestyle up here and when I get the chance I like to go out pig hunting. “I’ve gained so much experience in the two years I’ve been here in Coen, but I hope to continue working on that by moving around the Cape and working in other remote communities.” Justin’s an easy going bloke with a great sense of humour. He’s a popular man about town and works closely with a number of people in his community. Coen Men’s Group was very appreciative of Senior Constable Heinemann’s efforts to secure tools and equipment for them. He’s been quick to lend a hand too and has recently helped out the Coen Men’s Group by sourcing approximately $1000 worth of tools and equipment from the Cairns Bunnings store to help them out. Justin seems to have some input into most areas of the community and helped out the local Coen Rural Fire Brigade by becoming the local Fire Warden. He set about a local recruiting drive before arranging essential training for the team. Not happy with just that, he helped out the local Coen SES and arranged for a local member to be trained up to

operate the hydraulic ‘jaws of life’ equipment. Officer in Charge of Coen, Sergeant Matt Moloney continued to sing the praises of Justin and said, “He’s very active in our community and is always out there solving problems on a daily basis. “He worked closely with the Transport and Main Roads Department to have signage placed in local black spot areas in an effort to reduce the number of traffic crashes. “He attends a number of local meetings which include the Community Advisory Committee, Community Justice Group, Local Emergency Coordination Committee and has even chaired meetings as the Acting Officer in Charge of Coen,” Sgt Moloney said. “On a daily basis he is working for and with his local community to provide proactive responses to everyday policing issues in their small community.”

The books (the Healthy Living Series) - What We Eat, What We Smell, Safe Play and Feeling Good – by Jennifer Cooper–Trent, are specifically aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids. The Aboriginal Literacy Fund, a non-profit organisation committed to promoting Aboriginal literacy funded the printing and distribution of the series. “A mutual friend introduced Jennifer and I. I thought I might be able to help distribute the books through the Cape,” Lisa explains. “I started ringing around to see who wanted books. There was a lot of interest and I provided sets to every child in Aurukun, Coen and Pormpuraaw schools and Pormpuraaw Child Care Centre. “I then got a heap in for the other

Leptospirosis warning for Cape York K9s

THE Life of Western Cape College student Layla Fauid (pictured above) was a lot busier during the ﬁrst week of April as she not only had to sit numerous important school exams but also parade each day to Bravo Company, 51 Far North Queensland Regiment for work experience. She was kept busy at the Army Base, located at Evans Landing, both behind a desk working with the Bravo Company Clerk and in the yard assisting with maintenance on the Army Landrovers.

Layla was issued a military uniform and exposed to the life of a Far North Queensland Surveillance Soldier, becoming comfortable with this type of work very quickly. All the staff of Bravo Company agreed that it was a pleasure to work with Layla and would gladly work with her again. The staff believe that she would be an asset to any employer. UT &about WEIPA JUNIOR SOCCER CLUB FUNDRAISER AT WOOLWORTHS

Soccer club fundraiser sizzles at Woolworths WEIPA Junior Soccer had a successful fundraiser at Woolworths last Saturday. Soccer players and parents helped out selling sausages and rafﬂe tickets, as well as packing trolleys for a donation. A very big thank you to Woolworths for supporting the club by sponsoring the event and donating sausages, barbecue items and the yummy rafﬂe prize. Woolworths manager Jenny and team members Debbie and Dudley were awesome with their help and support. Thank you to the local community for their very kind and generous donations. The club raised $1,700 which will go towards new equipment for players.

Pebbles Playgroup – National Playgroup Week celebrations

Pebbles Playgroups take the “Cardboard Challenge” CHILDREN and parents from Pebbles Playgroup Weipa recently took part in National Playgroup Week Celebrations, which has the goal of uniting families in communities for a week of fun and learning opportunities. This years’ overarching theme was More than Play!, allowing Pebbles the opportunity to showcase the Playgroup, as well as celebrating the event’s narrative to which the organisation prides itself: families with children from birth to ﬁve years learning and engaging through play... together. One of this years projects was the “Cardboard Challenge” – an event where children are asked to create a mini box community out of boxes and paper craft. This concept brings to life the spirit of Playgroup by connecting families in the true playgroup sense as well as supporting a number of key learning skills like cognitive, gross and ﬁne motor development. Weipa’s Pebbles Monday playgroup used choice-making cards and symbols

to help them decide what they would like to create with their boxes. The clever playgroupers created a rocket, a car, an aeroplane and a boat. Wednesday playgroupers created an ‘Above and Below the Water’ scene; constructing boats, sails, crocodiles, coral and various sea creatures – all out of cardboard boxes. Michelle Morrison, Pebbles Playgroup co-ordinator said the Challenge was a great way to encourage learning and the development of various problem solving skills, but also a fun activity that bought children together to help each other while enjoying active play. “Playgroups all across Queensland are participating in this Challenge so we are up against a lot of competition. Our littlies have put a lot of time and effort (and fun of course), into their box creations so we really hope they do well. “Our box creations from both groups have been a fantastic way to encourage our playgroupers to have fun while learning at the same time” Michelle said.

THE Hawks are mean, the Bombers keen and Carlton unseen. That is the way I saw the weekend of footy. The Hawks kicked the first six majors of the game and never let their talons release the Dockers at any stage. Where was that notorious stingy defence that Freo has become so well known for. Beware Ross Lyon has a nack for getting the best out of his players so don’t write them off yet. The Tigers of 2014 seem to enjoy a nap til half time and then come out and play or like in Round 2 play the first half then have a nap in the second half. Anyway it got my Doggies on the board with their first win of the season. They just have to put it in for the full four quarters also. Speaking of four quarters didn’t the Swans show the Crows how to play on their new home ground. The Crows were spruking about their super fitness in the preseason and they would outrun every team in the comp. Typical of Crows I don’t trust them all though one did come to my rescue as a pup when we were down at the Archer River and two dingoes were stalking me and my human parents. This Crow flew and landed in between us and the dingoes and spread its wings trying to look as big as an Emu which it did to me as I was only a small pup. Well this Crow squaked and danced and flapped its wings at these two Dingoes until they finally fled. Unbelievable, my first real brush with nature, albeit a few years ago now. Can the Suns make the finals this year after only three years in the comp. They ran circles around the Lions and Gazza does not look like slowing up anytime soon. The big test will be up against the Hawks at Metricon on Saturday night. I am hoping that they come out ready to play and give it to the Hawks. Bad luck for Daniel Rich who is out for the season having to get a knee reco. I guess I better be a bit more careful when frisbeeing on the beach in the mornings as my canine mum takes me out quite often when I am taking a speccie. But like my human Dad says you only get hurt if you pussy foot around and don’t go in hard. The Giants from Western Sydney are really making their presence felt in 2014 and are sitting sixth on the ladder. They made Melbourne look as bad as they have been for the last decade. Didn’t Josh Kelly show everyone that he could very well be a star of the future. I think he had more touches in two quarters than the entire Melbourne team in four quarters. The Roos and Power had a great tussle at Etihad with the Roos putting the foot down in the last term. Who starred at the right end of the game…YES… Boomer Harvey again! Watch out if he keeps this up he could very well be up in the Brownlow count at season end. The Bombers absolutely gave the Skivvy guys a shelakking on Sunday night at the G. Actually did Carlton even turn up? The woof in the parks is that Bomber Thompson could very well be heading to Premiership Glory. You can see how keen they all are to do their best to execute Bombers game plan. I say that they are mad not to when he already has two cups in his cabinet from Geelong. On Sunday the Titans proved they were a force with a narrow two point win over the Storm. And the West Tigers were on song against the Sea Eagles to get the two points. Monday night’s clash saw the Cowboys play at their best against the Knights to get the win. Looking into Round six there are eight teams on the same points all equal second place and after this round will hopefully see the ladder start to spread out rewarding teams on form. Friday night will showcase two games, with the improving Panthers up against premiership heavyweights the Rabbitohs. The second game will see an all-Queensland derby with the top of the ladder Titans taking on the highly rated Broncos. On Super Saturday there will be three games played, with the Raiders and the Knights battling it out, the entertaining Eels taking on last year’s premiers the Roosters, and the young Tigers looking for a win over the Cowboys. Sunday will have two games with the Sea Eagles looking for a win over the struggling Sharks, and the newly coached Warriors try to improve form against an in-form Bulldogs outfit. Ladies match it with the Know the rules or net a fine men for Sea Swift qualifier AnotheR good roll-up for the weekend’s golf events at the Carpentaria Golf Club and it was good to see the rain stayed away. Saturday’s event was the Sea Swiftsponsored Single Match Play qualifier for men and ladies. Good to see the ladies join in, as it has been a few years since this event had ladies. The field was a decent size, 20 men competed and six ladies. While all the ladies qualified, unfortunately only 16 men can qualify. The list of qualifiers will be on display at the clubhouse this week, as well as the play-off schedule and dates. Please ensure that these dates are followed to avoid delay in future rounds. The daily competition on Saturday was a quick game, with all groups closely behind the one in front. As they say, “a quick game is a good game!” Results for Saturday were as follows:NTPs – Brett Elms on 9, Mick Fleming on 15, and Kris Brooks on 18. Winner was Jay Murray with a fine +6, with Kevie Martin runner-up on a three-way countback with a +3. Another good field of 21 players took to the course for Sunday’s

Blackwoods-sponsored Single Stableford. Winner for the day was Pete Ross, with 42 points, and runner-up was Roy Burley with 40 points. NTPs for the day went to Gavin Wust on 9, Olly Tata on 15, and Mick Fleming on 18. Reminder to all that the new tees are in place from Tuesday, April 8, 2014. A summary of the changes were distributed in the newsletter. Contact Sharon at the club if you didn’t receive a copy. Volunteers also needed to give a hand on the course in preparation for the Weipa Open on the May 3 and 4. If you can spare some time, even an hour, please see Megs at the shed. Work involves some whipper snipping, and general course tidy-up. Next weekend’s golf is a 4BBB stableford Match Play qualifier on Saturday, and a Single Stableford on Sunday. If you are planning on playing, please ensure your names are registered on the time sheets at the club before the day of the competition to enable on-time tee-offs.

ReStRiCtionS apply to recreational fishing gear in Queensland freshwaters and fishers are encouraged to brush up on regulations to avoid being tangled. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Gary Muhling said it was important fishers took the time to familiarise themselves with the rules before heading out fishing. “There are different rules that apply to fishing gear in Queensland, depending on whether you are fishing in

tidal or freshwater, particularly around the use of nets,” he said. “While most recreational nets can be used in tidal waters, fishers should be aware that these are not legal fishing apparatus in freshwaters. “Landing nets, scoop or dip nets, and dilly nets are permitted to be used; however all other nets, including cast and seine (bait) nets are illegal.” Mr Muhling noted an increase in the number of fishers using bait nets in local freshwater fishing spots. “We have issued a number

of on-the-spot fines to people recently for using bait nets in freshwater,” he said. “Ignorance is not an acceptable excuse for doing the wrong thing. Fishers need to ensure they know the rules.” If you suspect illegal fishing, whether seen in person or online, report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116. the chew, with a couple of crews bagging out before the sun shows up. If you get a big one on make sure your drag is locked up as they can give you a hard time and bust you off using the bottom to break your line. Had a few anglers hooking up on some good Tuskfish, but I can’t get any marks off them, and I won’t even reveal their name. I’d head out wide of Duyfken, down Red Cliffs or Pera way and get myself some fresh Ghost Crabs if I was planning a trip. There has been a bit of luck drifting a Crab over the reef flats using a float, which is well worth a try because you know how much Tuskies love crab. The creeks aren’t doing so bad either, plenty of Barra about taking lures and livies. Grunter seem to be still lingering around the mud flats on a rising tide, and some good schools of Threadies have been seen in the early morning on a rising tide at Rocky Point. I wouldn’t be putting my toe in the water though as a couple of big Hammerheads are stalking and smashing them. If you want a bit of fun some small Queenies and Giant Herring are feasting on the Jelly Prawn at the top of the tide and on the turn for an hour or so at Rocky Point. Looking forward to a bit of billfishing this weekend, and will give a full report as soon as I can. Will catch up next week and until then, enjoy your fishing.

Another week has gone by, the tide is still coming in and going out, the sun pokes it head over the eastern horizon and hides over the West each night, and the moon it controls the tides. The PDR must be okay as the visiting population are starting to arrive, and it looks like it’s going to be a busy Easter. A bit of local gossip... Dave Donald is paying us a visit, painting his units I believe. Young Scott from Naps has a new toy, a 6 metre Alley Craft - nice. That’s one of the lures he was using on the maiden voyage in Weipa (pictured top right), and it has plenty of tooth marks to prove there are some huge critters out there at the moment. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I thought it was Autumn not Summer at this time of year. The heat is a good thing though as it is drawing in some big schools of Mackerel and Tuna all along the coast, but boy that sun’s got some bite in it . There are plenty of bait balls about, though there seem to be a lot of Sharks hanging around them, so I would steer clear or you could be rigging baits all day. Besides that, who wants to pull in Sharks every ten minutes? Fingermark are schooling on most rocky outcrops in the 50-70ft depth. Catch some fresh Squid in the shipping channel, as it’s the best bait by far, and head south or out past Duyfken. Early morning is the best time. Black Jewies are on

AURUKUN’S Kerrrod Marbendinar played a leading role for the Cape York under 16 side which won the North Queensland under 16 Australian Rules championships at Airlie Beach. It was the fourth time in ﬁve years Cape York has taken out the prestigious title held on March 29 and 30. Other competing sides were

Townsville, Cairns, Mackay and Capricornia. Fifteen-year-old Kerrod played as a deep forward and starred during the carnival. Official Rick Hanlon said Kerrod was the only Aurukun player in the team. “Kerrod is a big lad and has only played 10 games of our code and is a very promising footballer. He will get better with more experience,” Hanlon said.

Cape York went through the carnival undefeated and in their last match which was a grand ﬁnal narrowly beat Townsville 6-4-40 to 5-5-35. In their previous match Cape York 3-4-22 defeated Capricornia 0-8-8. The day before in round one Cape York 7-4-46 beat Mackay 3-2-20. Cape York started the carnival in ﬁne style downing Cairns 5-4-34 to 3-7-25.

Many of the Cape York players are members of the Cape York Eagles juniors who live at AFL Cape York House in Cairns and compete in the Cairns competition. AFLQ North Queensland Development Manager Graeme Pratt congratulated all carnival players. “There is an enormous amount of talent in North Queensland,” Pratt said.
