AT the recent Skill360 Australia Employment and Training Awards ceremony in Cairns, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Aaron Lobley, Wanitta Blanco and James Baira received recognition for their excellent contribution to the site’s apprenticeship programme. Mrs Blanco has recently entered into the fourth year of her electrical apprenticeship, and received an encouragement award in the Electrical Apprentice of the Year category for her initiative and keen safety culture. Mr Lobley, now in the third year of his refrigeration and air conditioning apprenticeship, received an encouragement award in the Mature Age Apprentice/Trainee of the Year category for his commitment to his apprenticeship and providing support to younger apprentices.  continued page 2

Mr Baira received an encouragement award in the top category, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Apprentice/Trainee of the Year, for displaying strong leadership qualities during the fourth year of his electrical apprenticeship. Having recently completed his apprenticeship in February, Mr Baira has secured a full-time role with the business and remains a key asset to the Site Services team. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager, Operations, Gareth Manderson, said the site’s apprenticeship programme is a great way to up skill and employ local people. “I was very pleased to see our apprentices recognised for their hard work and contribution.” Mr Manderson said. “Aaron, Wanitta and James are fantastic ambassadors—not only

for the apprenticeship programme, but also for the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa business,” he said. The site’s apprenticeship programme is run in conjunction with Skill360 Australia and enables participants to gain a nationally recognised trade certificate in their field. Five other Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa apprentices were nominated and recognised for their efforts, including Anukie Tamwoy (light vehicle), Bradley Bowden (fitting and turning), Heath Gilmore (fitting and turning), Jasmine Mestroni (electrical) and Jordan Viti (fitting and turning) James, Aaron and Wanitta were selected from over 140 nominations across 12 different categories designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of North Queensland’s apprentices, trainees and students across a large range of industries.

THE health challenges facing Australia’s Top End will be the focus of an inaugural meeting in Darwin in early May aimed at establishing a Northern Australia Health Round Table. Department of Health Deputy Director-General Dr Michael Cleary said the proposed health round table would bring together the health departments of Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory to consider issues of mutual importance. “The north of Australia experiences a range of unique health challenges that are common right across the Top End and our three health jurisdictions,’’ Dr Cleary said. “These relate particularly to the challenges of accessing appropriate health services, the health disparity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-ATSI Australians, the recruitment and retention of a sustain-

Rebecca determined to shape the future A young Weipa woman has graduated from James Cook university with a teaching degree she was able to complete in her community through an award-winning remote area education program. Rebecca Namok, a Torres Strait Islander, graduated with a Bachelor of Education from JCU last week but she began her studies for the degree while still at high school. Ms Namok completed a Certificate III and a Certificate IV in Education (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) while in her senior years at Western Cape College at Weipa through the Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP). RATEP is a communitybased teacher education pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The award-winning program is offered as a partnership between JCU, the Queensland Department of Education and Training and Tropical North Queensland TAFE. It enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to remain within their local community while completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Education at a RATEP site or Thursday Island campus. Rebecca said that at first she was not sure what she wanted to do but the Cert III “was an

opportunity and when I began my passion for teaching began to grow even stronger”. Ms Namok said she liked teaching because it was helping shape the future. “What I like about teaching is the positive feeling that as an educator, you play a major role in educating students who are citizens of the future,” she said. “When I first started I didn’t really want to be a teacher. As I continued my studies and gained more experience and passion for teaching, I realised that is all I wanted to be, to challenge myself, have high expectations, make changes and mostly to improve and help be a part of closing the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.” Since graduating from high school, Rebecca has completed a Diploma of Education (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) through Tropical North Queensland TAFE then continued on to the Bachelor of Education at JCU while living in her home community of Napranum. RATEP, which has a study centre at Weipa and 16 other locations across Queensland, provided Rebecca with academic support and access to the information technologies needed to complete her studies successfully.

Applications open for Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are being encouraged to apply for the 2014 Queensland Indigenous youth Leadership Program. news Reducing Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy on Cape York IN an Australian first, portable safe sleeping places for babies (known as Pēpi-pods) are being rolled out in Cape York in an attempt to reduce the high rates of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities. Apunipima Cape York Health Council is partnering with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), Children’s Health Queensland and Change for our Children New Zealand to roll out the Pēpi-pod Program which has been nominated for an Australian Hesta Nursing Award. The program, which originated in New Zealand and saw the first drop in Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) among the Maori population in a decade, sees infants (of families with known risk factors for SUDI) up to six months placed in a portable, lined container to sleep. The Pēpi-pod is small enough to fit between the parents in bed, thereby enabling babies to co-sleep in their own safe place. Program Leader and Chair of the SIDS and Kids National Scientific Advisory Group Professor Jeanine Young from USC said the pods enable safe sleeping places for babies who aren’t in cots. “The Pēpi-pod Program is a safe sleep space combined within a targeted safe sleeping health promotion initiative for families with known risk factors for SUDI. The name originates from Pēpi, which is Maori for baby, with the ‘pod’ symbolising protection of precious new life,” Professor Young said. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander babies are 3.8 times more likely to die suddenly and unexpectedly than nonIndigenous infants and we know that infant deaths are associated with co-sleeping in hazardous circumstances; particularly for pre-term or low birth weight babies or where smoking, alcohol, drug use or unsafe sleep environments are present.” “Many Indigenous families prefer to co-sleep to ease breastfeeding and stay as close as they can to their baby – the Pēpi-pods enable families to maintain this practice and keep baby safe.” Apunipima Maternal and Child Health Team Leader Johanna Neville said the Health Worker-led program was being rolled out across seven Cape York communities, Mapoon, Napranum, Aurukun, Kowanyama, Coen, Mossman Gorge and Hopevale. “Maternal and Child Health Workers are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders who often live in the communities we service. “ H e a l t h Wo r k e r s h a v e strong relationships with their clients and are ideally placed to roll out the program,” Ms Neville said. “The program has three elements, the Pēpi-pod which provides a zone of physical protection around the baby wherever they sleep, parent education including a ‘Rules of Protection’ safety brieﬁng and practical safe infant sleeping information, and empowering families. “Families who participate in the program are asked to make a commitment to spread what they learn about protect-

Expected outcomes from this project include reduced rates of SUDI amongst high risk families; original data to inform acceptable, feasible, effective and sustainable strategies that build parent, health provider and community

capacity in reducing SUDI risk; increased parent and community awareness of safe sleeping recommendations and the addressing of national (Council of Australian Government) and international goals (Millennium Development Goal 4) to reduce infant and child mortality. “We are breaking new ground with this study – the use of portable sleep spaces to reduce the risk of SUDI for risk identiﬁed families has not been previously reported on in Australia,” Ms Neville said.

Weipa in a flap over exotic racing pigeons A SHARP-EYED Weipa tugboat employee has helped to avert the threat of a serious bird disease being introduced to Australia. The employee spotted two exotic racing pigeons and notified Kristy Philliskirk at Weipa Wildlife Care Inc. who collected the birds. “The birds had stamps on their wings and leg bands – both with Chinese writing on them - so I contacted Racing Pigeons Australia in Cairns who confirmed that the pigeons were from overseas,” Kristy said. “I also checked on the internet and found out there were pigeon races in the Philippines at the time the birds were found and they were probably blown off course in bad weather.” The birds were housed in cages away from other wildlife and Kristy contact the Department of Agriculture office in Weipa. After confirming that the pigeons were exotic and tame, the department acted on the advice of one of its veterinary officers in Brisbane and the birds were euthanised as a biosecurity precaution. The cages Kristy kept the birds in were also destroyed. The department’s Director of Biosecurity Operations, Northern Region, Kevin Langham, said the pigeons could introduce into Australia a range of serious bird diseases, including avian influenza (bird flu) and

Newcastle disease. “Not only could these diseases affect our native bird population, but if any infected exotic bird were to mix with local domestic and commercial birds, they could seriously impact our poultry and egg producers,” Mr Langham said. “Even boutique industries, such as our domestic racing pigeon industry and the pet bird industry could be affected.” Mr Langham said that sometimes racing pigeons sought refuge on international cargo ships. “If a bird is blown off course, gets lost over water, or encounters bad weather, it might use a ship to rest on,” Mr Langham said. “If the ship docks in Australia, the exotic racing pigeon becomes a potential pathway to introduce and spread bird diseases throughout the country. For this reason, the department works closely with port operators, stevedores and shipping companies to keep a lookout for these unwanted arrivals.” “When we do ﬁnd birds such as these we act quickly, just as we did in Weipa, to protect our native and domestic birds.” Kristy said she would like to remind the community that it is illegal to keep native animals or birds in care longer than 72 hours without reporting

The nuts and bolts of constitutional change Columnist Andrew Bolt appears to have started a ‘no’ campaign to constitutional change re the recognition of indigenous people. I refer to Bolt’s attack on Australian of the Year, Adam Goodes, who is Aboriginal, in the article “No Goodes will come of change” (Cairns Post 9/4/14). Bolt objected to remarks by Goodes about Australia’s past history of treating Indigenous people by saying: “Our past was never so vicious.” Bolt needs a history lesson. Making Goodes Australian of the Year was meant to be a unifying factor in our history, not an opportunity to bring further division which is what Bolt’s article does. Bolt says he wants to remove racism but one must wonder if he is trying to promote it instead. Bolt’s statement ‘Say no to racism. Say no to racial division. Say no to this change in our constitution’ follows a misrepresentation of the campaign of Recognize, of which Goodes has become a public face and the recommendations of the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition

Prior to this, myself and and my wife spent a week campaigning in federal parliament, handing over a giant boomerang painted by me, also an Aboriginal artist, to Speaker of the House, Bronwyn Bishop on November 21. It read “No Racism in the Constitution” and had about 360 signatures on it. I plan to continue my campaign aiming for 10,000 signatures, most of which I will gather personally but people

Bolt is incorrect when he says ‘the Constitution has never been used to stop Aborigines voting’. This is one of the many issues covered in “William Cooper: Gentle Warrior” by Barbara Miller about one of our early Aboriginal campaigners for the ‘uplift’ of his people as he called it. She records that all Australians, including Aborigines were British citizens prior to Australia becoming a nation. It was the passing of the Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902 and the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 which meant that Indigenous people were not included as citizens of Australia and could not vote.

Aborigines were stripped of their rights at the point of nationhood. The right to vote for Indigenous people came in 1962 for all states except Queensland where it was granted in 1965. This was prior to the 1967 referendum which changed the constitution to give Indigenous people the right to be counted in the census as people rather than flora and fauna.” He wants to bolt us into past discriminatory practices and misrepresent the nuts and bolts of the recommendations of the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians. Queensland’s everyday heroes set to be recognised QPCu (Queensland Police Credit union) has launched its inaugural awards program aimed at recognising the work of everyday heroes in the Queensland community, as the organisation gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Nominations are now open for the QPCU Everyday Heroes Awards 2014 across five categories, with the winner of each award pocketing $1,000 and a further $1,000 given to each person’s nominated charity. QPCU CEO Grant Devine said the awards were designed to recognise people

who had made an outstanding contribution in the community or given meritorious service to their association. “As we celebrate our special milestone we want to shine a light on the heroes of our community and highlight their vital contributions,” he said. Recent media coverage has reported on the possible change of first aid treatment for the Box Jellyfish and the Irukandji Jellyfish, however both Queensland Health and St John Ambulance (Qld) advise the continued used of vinegar until further research has been conducted. Queensland’s Chief H e a l t h O ff i c e r, D r Jeanette Young said Queensland Health has welcomed new research into Box Jellyfish stings completed by North Queensland researchers, however the advice for the treatment of Box Jellyfish and Irukandji Jellyfish on their website would remain the same. “Box Jellyfish stings are serious and potentially fatal, so it’s important that we treat them appropriately,” Dr Young said.

“Because this research has been conducted using a test model, we’ll need to look closely at the evidence presented to determine if we can improve the care provided to people stung by a Box Jellyfish. “We will work closely with the researchers and will provide Queenslanders with further advice on the most appropriate treatment when we know more.” In a statement issued this week St John Ambulance (Qld) said it supports the continued research and improvement into first aid techniques. “This new research has been forwarded on to the St John Ambulance Australia Medical Advisory Panel (MAP) who will report on any implications the new research has on first aid training for marine envenomation. “There are still other

steps involved before a finding such as this is implemented and introduced into our training. “St John Ambulance (Qld) would like to advise all Queenslanders that the correct first aid treatment still firmly remains as applying vinegar to a sting site for Box Jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish only. “The current teaching on the management of marine envenomation will remain until there

is a formal announcement nationally from the Medical Advisory Panel,” the statement said. Advice for the treatment of Box Jellyfish and Irukandji Jellyfish stings is as follows: • Call for help – dial 000 for an ambulance • Administer CPR if required • Pour vinegar over the sting • Wait for medical aid to arrive



Easter 2014 Be prepared with the correct safety equipment FANTASTIC weather in the Far North will ensure water vessels are out on our waterways and reefs this Easter. Search and Rescue authorities are urging far northerners to be well prepared for whatever outdoor activities they are planning across our region over the school holidays and the Easter period. Police Search and Rescue coordinator Sergeant Andrew Ibell points out that Easter is traditionally a busy time for outdoor activities such as boating, camping, ﬁshing hunting and hiking. It is also a busy time for Search and Rescue authorities and for volunteer organisations such as Volunteer Marine Rescue and SES who are called on to help out those persons who get themselves into difﬁculty. Sergeant Ibell said, “Take your time to make sure all your equipment whether it be a boat, vehicle or camping gear are all in good condition before you go.

“Make sure you have reliable emergency communication equipment for the area you are venturing into. “People have become too reliant on mobile phones which unfortunately in far north Queensland have limited coverage areas,” Sergeant Ibell said. “If you are going to be in an area where your friends or family cannot contact you make sure you let them know before hand. “Make sure you leave clear trip plans with someone so that if you don’t return by the agreed time a search can be started. “If you change those plans and stay away longer make sure you let someone know.” People venturing onto our waterways over Easter are asked to have consideration for other vessel operators. “When operating near other vessels or persons in the water slow down, reduce your wash and keep a good lookout at all times,”

HavE you ever wondered why it is that we play the pokies and buy all of those scratchies so religiously ever week? Why is that? I would like to suggest that we are investing in “hope”– in the hope that we win something, (preferably something big) so that we won’t have to work, so that we can go on that holiday, so that we can buy that dream home or pay off that mortgage which weighs like an anchor around our necks. Each week, despite knowing that all the odds are stacked against us, we try to buy a bit of hope. But why do we do that? Because without hope, we can’t live. Now, what has this got to do with Jesus and Easter and all that stuff? Pretty simple – Jesus is the Ultimate Scratchie. With him, we win everything – meaning and purpose in life; a fresh start; life beyond this life. We experience grace and the forgiveness. WIMARQ event @ Carpentaria Golf Club

Inaugural WIMARQ event a hit OVER 40 local women turned out to support the Weipa chapter of Women in Mining & Resources Queensland’s (WIMARQ) first networking event, held last Friday at the Carpentaria Golf Club. The Wine Down at the Deck event attracted women from a variety from industries across the community, including mining, health-for-profit, childcare and small businesses. President, Weipa WIMARQ chapter, Linda Murry, said the turnout of women was fantastic, and the committee was really pleased. I’d like to give a big shout out to WIMARQ committee member, Brooke Courtnage, in particular, who was the main organiser behind the event and unfortunately couldn’t attend. Also, thank you to the Golf Club for hosting us,” Linda said. “The aim of these events is to connect people and support women in our community to achieve their professional goals. “This was our ﬁrst event, and we certainly saw many women leave their comfort zones through the ‘speed dating’ networking game, which

encouraged everyone to spend two minutes talking to someone new, before moving on.” Stay tuned for details about future WIMARQ events, which will encourage networking and provide advice and handy tools for professional development. In April, the committee will organise a health and wellness session, which is open to the whole community, and a tour of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s ship loading wharf, which is limited to the mine’s employees. Other events throughout the year include workshops about developing leadership skills and financial management. “We believe a professional woman can really have it all these days – including balancing family and having a fulfilling career – and these events provide guidance for achieving this,” Linda said. The Weipa chapter of WIMARQ was officially launched last month on International Women’s Day, and is a sub-committee of the AusIMM (The Minerals Institute) Women in Mining Network.

I AM convinced after this round that many of the players would get a start with me and my canine mum on the beach playing Frisbee. They were turning themselves inside out to mark the footy, knocking the ball to the advantage of teammates and kicking impossible goals from all over the paddock and even back over their head. If you had never watched a game of AFL before, any of the games on the weekend would have given you those spectaculars. Speaking of knocking the footy forward to the advantage of a teammate did you know that Hawthorn are the leaders in this stat! Maybe this is why they are on top of the ladder? There were some beltings handed out on the weekend and rightly so. As I have said before if you aren’t going to play 100 minutes don’t bother turning up and give the younger kids a go like the Roos have. How good is that Ben Cunnington he sticks out like a legend of the game already. Watch him in the future. The skivvy wearer believes his team remain clear in their purpose…mmm…whilst winless at the bottom of the ladder with Leppers’ Lions and I am not backing the Blues to beat the boys from Western Sydney. They are sitting eighth on the ladder and I am sure that they won’t give that up easy. My Doggies got up over them on the weekend but it wasn’t a walk in the park it was more a fight on the beach. What a joke that was for a footy field in the 21st Century. So the boys decided to have a play in the sand during the third quarter all because Tomlinson gave Griffen a rib rattler. Isn’t this a contact sport? I don’t take my Frisbee and go home just because I get cleaned up whilst going for a specie or putting on a great lead for my human mum to throw to me. Toughen up boys. I said last week that the contest of the Suns against the Hawks would see where the Suns are at and sorry to report that after a tight first quarter the Hawks kicked 17 goals to just three by the Suns. There is still plenty of work to do for the Suns. Maybe they should have played in Canberra as they are used to running around on the sand at the Gold Coast. They all talk about the Swans always having a slow start to the season. Four rounds are now gone and they only have one win. Are they really missing Goodes, Tippet and Reid that much? Well the good news is Goodes and Tippet are back on the training track and they will all be back playing in two to four weeks. I will be on the couch with my human mum eagerly waiting to see how things pan out. Hopefully I am not back under the couch for safety reasons. Everyone book your seat in front of the tele for 3.20pm Monday for the blockbuster to see if the Cats can claw their way over the top of the Hawks who will have their talons sharpened and ready for action. The Titans, Bulldogs, Tigers and Eels weren’t given a chance at the start of the season, but great form early in the season has them leading the way in the top eight. On Friday night the Rabbitohs defended their way to a win over the Panthers, and the Titans did the same over the Broncos. Saturday saw the Knights get up against the Raiders, the Eels pull an upset over the Roosters and the Tigers got the win over the Cowboys. On Sunday the Bulldogs narrowly defeated the Warriors, and then the Sea Eagles tore apart the Sharks. Monday night’s game bought the round to a close with the Storm scoring the try of the season on full time to steal the win from the Dragons. Looking into Round 7, there will be three games played on Friday as it is the Easter long Weekend. First up the Rabbitohs take on the Bulldogs, then the Knights will play the Broncos and lastly the Sea Eagles go into battle with the Cowboys. On Saturday the Dragons will play the Warriors, and the Sharks look to upset the Roosters. On Sunday there will only be one game played between the Raiders and the Storm. Then to close the round there will be two games played on Monday. Firstly the Eels take on the Tigers and then the Panthers will verse the Titans. Local officers star at QPS State Championships THE Queensland Police Service Rugby League Association held its annual State Championships on the Sunshine Coast, from March 31 to April 4. The mighty Far Northern Marlins again travelled down south to attend the week-long competition with a competitive team comprising players from the Far Northern District including Police staff from Weipa, Aurukun, Lockhart River and the Torres Straits. The Marlins started out of the blocks well with a convincing win over the Mt Isa Mongrels but where overplayed and out-matched by the eventual carnival winners South Eastern Muddies in the second game, relegating them to fight it out for 3rd place against the Southern Boars. Unfortunately due to injuries and lack of playing depth the boys lost the last game 20 – 10 to finish the carnival at a respectable 4th spot. Local Weipa Officer Ben Forbes again starred for the Marlins at

halfback but unfortunately for Ben and the Marlins he suffered a knee injury in the dying minutes of the second game. Forbees still showed selectors enough though to again be selected for the Queensland Police Service Rugby League Association State Team to contest the forthcoming Tri-Series against the New South Wales Police and an Afﬁliated States and Territories team. Former Weipa and Coen police ofﬁcer Ben Sawden also made state selection as an integral part of the winning South Eastern Muddies team. As part of the QPS 150 years celebrations the Queensland vs New South Wales police match will be the curtain raiser for the third State of Origin in Brisbane later this year. League carnival team dedicated to the Late Wayne Guivarra CAPE York players Jason Nixon, David Reid and Graham Alexander will be an integral part of the Wayne Guivarra Memorial side to compete at the 2014 Rockhampton Allblacks rugby league carnival from April 19 to 21. Nixon, Reid and Alexander are teammates with Napranum Natives Club. The late Wayne Guivarra, a brother of Mapoon Mayor Peter Guivarra, died last August after a long illness. For many years, Wayne had been a stalwart of the Island of Origin Series on Badu Island at which many Cape York players competed over many years. This side will be coached by former Canberra Raiders, Brisbane Broncos, Queensland State of Origin and Test forward Sam Backo. Nixon has competed at many Island of Origin carnivals along with other top Cape York players including Garreth Smith and Jack Sagigi. Organising the memorial team has been a joint effort by Wayne’s daughter Kamiel, Wayne’s brothers, sisters and friends. Another brother Billy Guivarra told the Bully that Nixon, Read and Alexander would be an important part of the team.

“We also will have Eugene Bond from Bamaga and players from Badu, Cairns, Brisbane and Gladstone,” he said. Defending champions Descendants, which last year included Cape York players, is among nominations already received for the ﬁrst Allblacks carnival of 2014. The venue for what is also known as the CQID Indigenous Reconciliation Carnival will be Rockhampton’s Central Queensland University on Norman Road and 24 men’s teams as well as women’s sides will be accepted. Billy Guivarra said the Memorial Team was established to honour Wayne’s long and passionate contribution to community development, advancement and all sports, most notably his passion for rugby league. “As a player Wayne won premierships with Red Devils in Gladstone as captain 1980, Western Suburbs in Gladstone as captain/coach in 1983 and Kangaroos club at Cairns in 1984. “In 1981 Wayne was one of only two selected in the Central Queensland side where he played in the front row in 1981 against a Brisbane team that featured captain, Arthur Beetson, Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga and co, and

was also involved in taking a Torres Strait Island team to Sydney in 1985 to compete at the Australian Championships and the Torres Strait Island team to participate in the Pacific Cup in 2000, where they came a highly credible third place behind Australian Indigenous team and Western Samoa. “ Wa y n e w a s i n v o l v e d i n rugby league as a co-ordinator, official, player and coach throughout his whole life right up to his passing last August,” Billy said. The late Arthur Beetson was a warm friend of Wayne Guivarra and was a guest at 2011 Island of Origin grand final on Badu. Billy said this team would not have been possible without the support of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council. “The Guivarra family is very grateful for their generosity, we would also like to acknowledge Goodline Weipa, Engineers Queensland Gladstone, Manunda Mobile K9 Dogwash Cairns, Gladstone Sports Power, Horace Baira of Badu, Shelita Nona and Danny Nona and others that have helped. Weipa to host under-12 AFL camp AFL Cape York will be holding an under12- development camp in Weipa on April 26 and 27. The camp is for chldren turning 11 and 12 years of age in 2014, and will be skills and game-sense focused with an actual game being played on Sunday morning prior to the camp ﬁnishing. From the camp the under-12

Crusader team will be selected which will participate at the State Primary Schools Championships in Townsville from June 7 to 12. The camp will be held from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, April 26, and from 9am to noon on April 27. Further information is available by contacting AFL Cape York (4054 5199).

TWO members of the Weipa Swimming Club recently travelled to Cairns to compete in the FNQ Long Course Championships, which was attended by 11 clubs and 182 swimmers from across the FNQ region. Congratulations to Natalia Nash and Sabrina Koina on their recent swimming achievements at these championships. Natalia swam personal best times in all three of her races, taking 4.50 seconds off her 50m breaststroke time, a huge 6.51 seconds off her 50m backstroke and 3.73 seconds off her 50m freestyle, winning third place and a bronze medal in the process. Sabrina swam in six events collecting one gold, three silver and one bronze medal in her age events, and a fifth place in the open 50m freestyle. Sabrina took over six seconds off her 200m individual medley time, 0.5 second from her 100m butterfly time, and picked up the runner-up 12 year-old FNQ Age Champion. town after many new karts were purchased during the off season. Eric McKavanagh fished Big Bridge the other night and caught his first ever Barra. He also sent in the pic of this strange looking Cod, which is actually one of the Smiler family. There have been a lot of Barra caught of late, which either means we have a healthy system, or that it was too rough to venture outside. Those that did poke their noses out were rewarded with some Good Spanish Mackerel in the 10-15kg range. Tuna were also about in good numbers - was given a slab, so I have been eating some very fresh sashimi this week. Lots of people think sashimi is just raw fish but many cultures around the World celebrate by eating raw fish as respect to the fish. I saw a two-year old whack a piece of sashimi in his mouth the other night – he didn’t go for the Wasabi much but came back a couple times for the fish. I think we might see some

SOUTH Westerlies - what can you say? Darn cyclones interfering with our ﬁshing! I had all intentions of going bill fishing on Sunday and Monday. I even had the boat primed, the baits ready, the

rods rigged...but it was a no go. Maybe next time. I went for a run up to Pennefather on Sunday, and Pirate got a nice Jack for Sunday night dinner. I was using Cod lures, nine Gold Spotted Day Savers I think, oh and a Flathead, so mine didn’t count.

I thought I was onto a big ﬁsh when I saw a black shape, four foot long, just off the shore line, but it turned out to be a croc having a swim. It got the adrenaline pumping though, because when I pulled a lure past him he started to follow it out of the water, that was until he saw me. That was the last
