PEOPLE paused to honour those who have served, and remember those who have given their lives in service to our nation in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations at ANZAC Day ceremonies around Cape York. Around 400 people attended the Weipa dawn service, which was followed by ANZAC Day breakfast
at the B Company 51FNQR Army Depot. Mapoon commemorated the fallen with a march, led by Army Reservist Marda Pitt, from the school to the town memorial where the names of local Indigenous service men and women were read out by Western Cape College Mapoon campus school captains and wreaths were laid. continued page 12

FOLLOWING the d e p a r t u r e o f Ta m m y Freeman from the Weipa Town Authority (WTA), Peter Graham has been sworn into his new role as member. Tammy’s contribution to the WTA is well recognised, and her presence will be missed. The WTA would like to wish Tammy and her family well in her future endeavours. Newly sworn in, Peter is an active member of the Weipa community as skipper of the local Voluntary Marine Rescue (VMR) group, and often leads fundraising events and is involved with the town’s disaster management group. The new member said that he is committed to keeping the interests of the town at the forefront of all WTA decision making. “One of the first pieces of work I will be involved with, is progressing the relocation of the Evans Landing boat ramp and new parking area,” Mr Graham said. Show some respect ANZAC Day is a day to show respect to our defence force men and women of the past, present and future. For the serving members and ex-serving personnel, it’s a time to catch up with friends and make new ones and also to remember mates that we have lost in different campaigns. The reason I have written this letter to the editor is to highlight a comment that was said to a serving member of the Defence Force at a venue here in Weipa. I am appalled that a member of the public could say ‘were you not good enough to go overseas’ because the member had only one medal. To the person who asked that stupid question, here is a quick lesson for you from an ex-soldier. When defence personnel receive medals, they are honoured and

Australia has one of the most highly trained, professional and respected Defence Forces in the world. To become a Sailor, Soldier or Airman you have to pass a rigorous recruit training course and ongoing training for the job you have chosen to do within the defence force. So you see old mate, if these fine men and women pass these courses and wear the uniform with our Coat of Arms their pretty much bloody good enough to me and have my respect. You don’t need medals to be recognised by your mates, we know you do a good job anyway. Just a simple thank you for watching my ‘six’ and I’ll shout you a beer. LEST WE FORGET Sedoi (Ruby) Harvey

MOU signing marks new era for Land Councils Cairns-based native Title representative bodies (nTrbs) the Cape York Land Council and the north Queensland Land Council have signed an historic Memorandum of Understanding to take them into a new era of cooperation and teamwork. ‘Speaking as one voice’ and ‘united we stand’ were the themes of the afternoon as Board Chairs Richie Ahmat (CYLC) and Errol Neal (NQLC) celebrated the signing with staff at an NQLC Board meeting this afternoon. “I think it’s the only way forward,” Mr Ahmat said. “We have to have an agreement for cross-border purposes for Native Title claims. “I think it shows a great deal of respect between the North Queensland Land Council and the Cape York Land Council. “It’s been a long time coming but we’re there now, which is fantastic.” Mr Neal said it was an historic occasion, particularly for the NQLC which had members within its boundaries

sTage one of the water system delivery upgrade project is nearing completion, with the final round of pipe installation and replacement requiring a water outage scheduled for mid-May. A water outage to Weipa town is required to complete this work during the following times: • Tuesday, May 13, 10pm – 4.30am (Wednesday morning); • Wednesday, May 14, 12.00 midnight – 4.00am (Thursday morning). During these timeframes there will be

no access to water, and residents are urged to plan accordingly and fill up any water bottles or coolers beforehand. In between the two outages a temporary by-pass pipe will be installed to continue the supply of water to Weipa. This bypass pipe will see water supplied at a reduced pressure, and residents are advised not to irrigate during these days. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s general manager operations, Gareth Manderson said the joint initiative with the Weipa Town Authority will ensure the town’s water
system are equipped to handle current and future water demand. “We are committed to completing this work with minimal impact as we understand residents and businesses are directly affected. We thank the community for their cooperation during these works,” Mr Manderson said. Evans Landing will not be affected by these water outages. Stage two of the water system delivery upgrade project is expected to commence later in the year, and will see a booster pump installed in Rocky Point.

news Safe sleeping pods program finalist in national awards A mATernAl and child health service team providing sleeping pods to Indigenous infants at increased risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) has been named one of the finalists in the 2014 heSTA Australian nursing Awards. The Pēpi-pod® Program based at the Apunipima Cape York Health Council, is one of five finalists in the Team Innovation category. They are recognised for assisting Indigenous families at higher risk of SUDI and using local networks to spread broader health promotion messages. Apunipima’s Maternal and Child Health Team Leader, Johanna Neville, said 24 Pēpi-pods have been distributed to assist families provide safer sleep environments for their babies, with plans to expand the service this year to more Cape communities. University of the Sunshine Coast Professor of Nursing, Jeanine Young, said the program was the first of its kind in Australia to deliver safe sleep action, combined with advice, to reduce SUDI among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies are 3.8 times more likely to die suddenly and unexpectedly than nonindigenous infants,” Professor Young said. “While sleeping with a baby is a common infant care practice, infant deaths have been associated with co-sleeping in hazardous circumstances, particularly for pre-term and lowbirth weight babies or where smoking, alcohol, drug use or unsafe sleeping environments are present. “The Pēpi-pod is a general purpose polypropylene box transformed into an appealing infant bed through the addition of a culturally-suitable fabric cover, tight fitting mattress and bedding. “The program provides the pod to

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, and the support of local businesses for the RFDS. If you have been following the WAGS, you will know that we have smashed our fundraising goal, not once, but three times. Survivors of child sexual abuse encouraged to share their story The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to share their story of child sexual abuse. Royal Commission Chief Executive Officer Janette Dines said Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be a key focus of a national public awareness campaign launched this week. “Around seven per cent* of people who’ve shared their story with the Royal Commission identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, but we know that there
are many more survivors who are yet to make contact with the Royal Commission. “The Royal Commission has been working to build trust with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and will visit a number of regions including Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. “This campaign is an opportunity for all Australians to find out more about the work of the Royal Commission and how survivors can share their story of child sexual abuse. “From today people should expect to start seeing and hearing more about the Royal Com-
mission in newspapers, websites and radio stations around the country as the campaign is rolled out in every state and territory,” she said. Ms Dines said the Royal Commission will be distributing information about its work across an extensive network of government bodies, community groups and service providers around the country. “By distributing information about the Royal Commission via local councils, medical centres, government and community services, we will be able to connect with even more people and ensure that everyone who experienced child
sexual abuse while in the care of an Australian institution has the opportunity to share their story with Royal Commission, if they choose to do so. “The Royal Commission will also work with key Indigenous groups in the community who play a vital role in informing people about the Royal Commission and encouraging more people to share their story,” said Ms Dines. The schools teach English literacy and numeracy using the direct instruction teaching method, which focuses on teacher direction and repetition. Mr Chandler last Wednesday visited the Aurukun campus, where all students speak English as a second language. He said he was impressed

Mr Pearson said students at the Cape York schools are encouraged to attend urban boarding schools once they have graduated from primary school, it was reported. “This is a model for remote Australia really,” he said. “Our five C model is completely applicable to Indigenous communities across

TRIBAL BIBLE By Rev. Michael Connolly
WE will move on to Acts Ch 4 : 1-22 where it reports that Peter and John stirred up the Sadducees by telling people publicly that Jesus had risen from the dead, which goes against their belief that the dead do not rise to life. You remember that when Jesus was leading and teaching the disciples, (Matthew Ch16: 11-12), he too bumped into the Sadducees, but he stumped them with his answer as shown in Matthew Ch22: 23-33. Their leader Jesus was gone in a sense but they had the Holy Spirit now to help them remember what Jesus taught them, including all that was written in their Scriptures about opposition to Jesus. (John Ch 14:18,26) The spread of the gospel was now in the hands of the Lord’s students, to give out and defend! So the Sadducees had Peter and John taken before the other Jewish spiritual leaders, which was not a bad thing because many of them
believed in the resurrection, so the two would get to have their say to sympathetic ears. If the ordinary people copped a spray for helping to put Jesus on the Cross, the spiritual leaders copped the same, but they had to back down from punishing the two disciples because they really broke no Law. Also, a crowd of five thousand new believers outside accepted the message from Peter and John, about the lame man being healed by the risen Christ, and they didn’t want them stirred up. Besides, the proof of the healed man was before them, which would have them thinking long and deep. To the two disciples credit, when they were ordered not to preach again in the name of Jesus, they refused to do so, saying that they would rather obey God than man. Those last words say much to us today as God’s servants too, doesn’t it? Jesus is alive. Rev Michael Connolly

Once again, Australia is stealing its Indigenous children By JOHN PILGER from johnpilger.com
The tape is searing. There is the voice of an infant screaming as he is wrenched from his mother, who pleads, “There is nothing wrong with my baby. Why are you doing this to us? I would’ve been hung years ago, wouldn’t I? Because [as an Australian Aborigine] you’re guilty before you’re found innocent.” The child’s grandmother demands to know why “the stealing of our kids is happening all over again”. A welfare official says, “I’m gunna take him, mate.” This happened to an Aboriginal family in outback New South Wales. It is happening across Australia in a scandalous and largely unrecognised abuse of human rights that evokes the infamous Stolen Generation of the last century. Up to the 1970s, thousands of mixed race children were stolen from their mothers by welfare officials. The children were given to institutions as cheap or slave labour; many were abused. Described by a Chief Protector of Aborigines as “breeding out the colour”, the policy was known as assimilation. It was influenced by the same eugenics movement that inspired the Nazis. In 1997, a landmark report,
‘Bringing Them Home’, disclosed that as many 50,000 children and their mothers had endured “the humiliation, the degradation and sheer brutality of the act of forced separation . . . the product of the deliberate, calculated policies of the state”. The report called this genocide. Assimilation remains Australian government policy in all but name. Euphemisms such as “reconciliation” and “Stronger Futures” cover similar social engineering and an enduring, insidious racism in the political elite, the bureaucracy and wider Australian society. When in 2008 Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised for the Stolen Generation, he added: “I want to be blunt about this. There will be no compensation.” The Sydney Morning Herald congratulated Rudd on a “shrewd manoeuvre” that “cleared away a piece of political wreckage that responds to some of its supporters’ emotional needs, but changes nothing.” Today, the theft of Aboriginal children - including babies taken from the birth table - is now more widespread than at any time during the last century. As of June last year, almost 14,000 Aboriginal children had been “removed”. This is five times the number when ‘Bringing Them Home’ was written. More than a third of all removed children are Aboriginal from 3 per cent of the population. At the present rate, this mass removal of Aboriginal children will result in a stolen generation of more than 3300 children in the Northern Territory alone. Pat (not her real name) is the mother whose anguish was secretly recorded on a phone as four Department of Child Services officials, and six police, descended on her home. On the tape an official claims they have come only for an “assessment”.
But two of the police officers, who knew Pat, told her they saw no risk to her child and warned her to “get out of here quick”. Pat fled, cradling her infant, but the one-year-old was eventually seized without her knowing why. The next morning a police officer returned to apologise to her and said her baby should never have been taken away. Pat has no idea where her son is. Once, she was “invited” by officials to bring her children to “neutral” offices to discuss a “care plan”. The doors were locked and officials seized the children, with one of the youngest dragging on a police officer’s gun belt. Many Indigenous mothers are unaware of their legal rights. A secretive Children’s Court has become notorious for rubberstamping removals. Most Aboriginal families live on the edge. Their life expectancy in towns a short flight from Sydney is as low as 37. Dickensian diseases are rife; Australia is the only developed country not to have eradicated trachoma, which blinds Aboriginal children. Pat has both complied with and struggled bravely against a punitive bureaucracy that can remove children on hearsay. She has twice been acquitted of false charges, including
“kidnapping” her own children. A psychologist has described her as a capable and good mother. Josie Crawshaw, the former director of a respected families’ support organisation in Darwin, told me: “In remote areas, officials will go in with a plane in the early hours and fly the child thousands of kilometres from their community. There’ll be no explanation, no support, and the child may be gone forever.” In 2012, the Co-ordinatorGeneral of Remote Services for the Northern Territory, Olga Havnen, was sacked when she revealed that almost $80m was spent on the surveillance and removal of Aboriginal children compared with only $500,000 on supporting the same impoverished families. She told me: “The primary reasons for removing children are welfare issues directly related to poverty and inequality. The impact on families is just horrendous because if they are not reunited within six months, it’s likely they won’t see each other again. If South Africa was doing this, there’d be an international outcry.” She and others with long experience I have interviewed have echoed the Bringing them Home report, which described an official “attitude” in Australia that regarded all Aboriginal people as “morally deficient”.
A Department of Families and Community Services spokesman said that the majority of removed indigenous children in New South Wales were placed with indigenous carers. According to indigenous support networks, this is a smokescreen; it does not mean families and is control by divisiveness that is the bureaucracy’s real achievement. I met a group of Aboriginal grandmothers, all survivors of the first stolen generation, all now with stolen grandchildren. “We live in a state of fear, again,” they said. David Shoebridge, a State Greens MP told me: “The truth is, there is a market among whites for these kids, especially babies.” The New South Wales parliament is soon to debate legislation that introduces forced adoption and “guardianship”. Children under two will be liable - without the mother’s consent - if “removed” for more than six months. For many Aboriginal mothers like Pat, it can take six months merely to make contact with their children. “It’s setting up Aboriginal families to fail,” said Shoebridge. I asked Josie Crawshaw why. “The wilful ignorance in Australia about its first people has now become the kind of intolerance that gets to the point where you can smash an entire group of humanity and there is no fuss.”

Lest We Forget. Life in 1914 – win more than $320 in prizes
ANZAC Day @ B Coy. 51FNQR
IN this second instalment of the Australia Great War story competition readers have another chance to get their name into the draw to win a limited edition set of Sands of Gallipoli medallions as well as a 1914 Australia in the Great War Penny Memory Diary – total value $329.00. The excerpt is from Great War Memory Penny Diary, the writings of a young would-be journalist, artist and part time soldier called John Murray which follows his story through the war. The Western Cape Bulletin are publishing excerpts from the 1914 Diary to give one lucky reader the chance to win a limited edition set of Sands of Gallipoli medallions as well as a their own copy of the 1914 Diary – total value $329.00 (see below for competition details). January - March 1914 Happenings at Home #9, Matters of Family Father’s store is flourishing. Summer arrived with a vengeance this year and Coogee Bay is drawing more and more people. It is getting positively crowded at weekends with sunbathers from miles away seeking out the sands and the cool waters. Father talks of expanding the store further or opening another at the southern end by the seaside. He has already added a range of household merchandise to his emporium which seems to attract good custom, although Mother is still concerned about the hours he keeps, working seven days beginning each at 5am and closing only in the late afternoon. He only recently elected to open on Sundays and is the only store to do so for many miles. I think he was heartened by a recent article in the Herald which suggested only a small minority of people would want to enforce restrictions on Sunday trading in these modern times. Father is buoyed by the trade, with people travelling from neighbouring areas to get produce, some even by motor car from as far as Petersham, as well as the steady stream of bathers wanting a cooling drink. Mother convinced Father to import two new General Electric toasters under the guise that he could offer them for sale and perhaps use one himself. But Father insists on stoking the cooker in the mornings to brown his toast over flames. The house is hellish hot after he leaves and stays that way all day. Poor Mother.
As you know Albert turned 22 this past February. He left his job at the glassworks soon after. That is three jobs in the past year. He is helping Father in the store and doing more than his share of service with the Citizen Forces’ 21st. I would not be surprised if he were to enlist in the Permanent Forces soon. He was promoted to Sergeant in January and talks only of the life of a soldier and service to King and Country. Now he has achieved your rank, Mother decided he could have your old uniform as a spare. I freely admit he is a fine soldier and perhaps regular soldiering is what he needs to realise himself, although I ask on your return that you have words with Albert about treating me fairly when on parade. I seem to take the worst of jobs and despite his assurances to the contrary, I think he enjoys seeing me toil. I freely admit I am not as strong as he or you but it serves no purpose to prove that to the other lads of A Company. John Murray Question: On what day of the week was trading technically unlawful?
Win an Australia in the Great War 1914 Memory Penny Diary and Sands of Gallipoli Medallions The Western Cape Bulletin are publishing excerpts from the 1914 Diary in this edition and the Wednesday, May 30, 2014 edition to give one lucky reader the chance to win a limited edition set of Sands of Gallipoli medallions as well as their own copy of the 1914 Diary – total value $329.00. Aurukun remembers those who served By Aurukun Shire Council Mayor, Derek Walpo
THE community of Aurukun paid tribute and remembered their men who served the community and our nation. The Japanese tried to enter the Archer River in a submarine but could not get in and we, as a community, need to be thankful for that. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) constructed a radar station at Wutan (311 Radar Station) at the mouth of the Archer River in March 1943 and this continued operations until June 1944. In September 1943, a vessel from 2nd Australian Water Transport Group called in to Mapoon, Weipa and Aurukun Mission Stations to recruit Aboriginal men for service. Our men enlisted and served with the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion. Our men with the rest of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion had a vast knowledge of the waterways of Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria, some of whom had worked on pearling luggers, and this knowledge was of immense assistance during the war. The Pioneer Company gave assistance to the 17th Australian Field Company which was stationed on Horn Island. Knowledge of local reefs and sandbars allowed the battalion to help the 2nd Australian Water Transport Unit, as well as the 22nd Australian Line Section who
were laying an underwater cable, linking communications between the mainland, the Torres Strait and New Guinea. The Battalion’s knowledge of the Torres Strait and its waters were invaluable to the Allied effort. Between October and December 1943, some members of the Battalion went into Papua New Guinea. 870 men of the Torres Strait and Cape York joined the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion and were a very strong force in the defending of the north of Australia. There were 97 Japanese air raids reported in that Northern Australian region during World War II and 18 bombs fell on Horn Island making it the second most attacked place in Australia after Darwin. On ANZAC Day Aurukun is honoured to raise the flag of the Torres Strait Infantry Battalion. We pay particular honour to our men who served their country: Johnny Bandicootcha Q272363 Charlie Bob Ngakyunkwokka Q272379 Billy Buttons Woolla Q272380 Callum Woolla Q272382 Billy Comprabar Q272385 Johnnie Lac Lac Ampeybegan Q272383 Uki Merkoola Q272361 Billy Panjee Peinkyekka Q272381 Sandy Pootchemunka Q272386 Tommy Toikalkin Q272362 Frank Wolmby Q272384 LEST WE FORGET

Local boys perform well at All Blacks carnival Alf Wilson story
CAPE Cluster players Jason Nixon and David Read performed strongly for the Wayne Guivarra Memorial side which reached the grand final of the Rockhampton All Blacks carnival over the Easter long weekend. Fifteen men’s sides and six women’s teams contested the first Allblacks carnival of the year held from Easter Saturday to Monday. In qualifying games the Wayne Guivarra Memorial side had a bye in round one before defeating Millie G Mob 32-28 in round two staging a great comeback. The side which was named in honour of the late and great Torres Strait Island rugby league identity Wayne Guivarra then won its semi final beating Black Magic 22-18. “We were down 18-nil at half time and got the win – the Weipa boys Jason and David went well for us at the carnival” said team manager Mark Anderson. Anderson said that Read was responsible for one of the best individual performances of the carnival. “In the semi final he intercepted a pass from the opposition and ran 90m before passing to a team mate who scored for us, It was great to watch” Anderson said. Nixon played at lock and Read as a utility back and the pair travelled the longest distance of any of the carnival footballers. That set up a grand final showdown with Woorabinda Gold which beat Palm Island Barracudas 20-10 in the other semi. Barracudas had recruited some quality TSI footballers including All Blacks carnival specialist Billo Mosby. In the grand final Woorbinda Gold defeated the Wayne Guivarra Memorial side 40-14. Players from the Wayne Guivarra Memorial side did well in the carnival individual awards and selection in the representative merit side picked after the carnival. Bobby Nona was named best forward of the carnival. Windsor Bowie, Angus Dorante, Bobby Nona and Ben Shell were picked in the 20 man merit team
acknowledging them as the best players at the carnival. In the men’s bowl final Jason Lingwoodock Memorial beat Macca United 34-12 and in the Plate decider CQ Warriors defeated Gunboat Raiders 22-19. AFL wrap-up with Scoop the Newshound
Round of 250’s THREE games on ANZAC Day you couldn’t ask for it to be any better. So I settled in on the couch with the felines I am forced to live with and my human mum and dad for a marathon of footy. We all could not believe that the Magpies performed a sixty point turnaround on the Bombers when they looked dead and buried at six goals down early in the second quarter. With 91,000 people watching you live you need to perform and it all came through the ANZAC medallist Dane Swan with his trusty sidekicks Pendlebury and Sidebottom. AFL went across the ditch where the Lions were following Essendon’s footsteps when they surrended a 32 point lead to hold on and win by 3 points over Saint Nick and his merry men. Bad luck for young 18 year old Eli Templeton who broke his arm in the first quarter. Only 13,409 turned up to watch what turned out to be a very good game of footy. A shame when AFL was the first code of footy ever played in New Zealand. Just to keep things consistent the Dockers gave up a four goal lead in the first term to finally succumb to a fast running Roos outfit that remembered that they supposed to win to celebrate the big Drew Petrie’s 250th game in the blue and white stripes. On Saturday the Suns ran rampant over the Giants with the little master adding another clip to his highlight reel which is already jam packed. That goal in the second term was a bottler as the Suns disposed of the Giants by 40 points. Reminded me of the steps I put in on the beach to elude my fellow canines with the Frisbee (maybe I should get my humans to start on my highlights reel). The skivvy wearing coach has finally got some consistency from his charges when they travelled over West and beat a very determined West Coast by 3 points that went to the wire. Poor decision making and skill errors at critical times were the downfall of the Eagles besides their inaccurate kicking. 17 behinds is not good in any teams books. Didn’t the Demons make the Swans work hard for their win in a low scoring game? How was the highlight of when Goodes ran on and had an immediate impact on the scoreboard? Paul Roos has definitely got the same type of game plan happening with Melbourne as he instilled in Sydney over a 202 game and one flag coaching career there. The word is that Buddy will be back on the paddock next week to front up against the Lions. My Dogs replicated Friday’s games by being out to a five and a half goal lead to lose by nine points. What was it? The coach reckons inability to compete around the ball in the second term and a bit of stage fright moving it in the third term. Either he needs to move it or send the boys down the beach with me and my Frisbee there is none of that rubbish in my run on side. TURN IT UP. An 11 goal mauling of the Tigers by the merciless Hawks who weren’t even at the top of their game. Little Cyril Rioli showed all the knockers that he really is a class forward by having 17 disposals at 100% efficiency. What a celebration for Mitchell and Burgoyne who both played their 250th game. The fight on the boundary was the only highlight for Richmond with even one of their supporters jumping the fence to help out (Idiot). What do I say? I talked up the 1v2 battle this week that lasted up until quarter time but they had THE POWER TO WIN by 40 points. This makes no argument that the Power are now true flag contenders. The biggest worry is for Eddie Maguire with his comment when interviewing Kane Cornes post match and dropped the mighty C bomb. Yes Eddie you are not as squeaky clean as you portray. My game of the round is the Blues v Magpies. Front seat on the couch, Scoop The Newshound

NRL wrap-up with Karl
Tributes and respect ANZAC weekend saw tributes and respect at the highest level displayed throughout the weekend. The Round kicked off on Friday with the regular ANZAC clash between the Roosters and the Dragons, with the Roosters proving too strong for the Dragons in the end. Then the Warriors beat the Storm in a close encounter, and lastly the Rabbitohs held out the Broncos to get the two points. Saturday’s games saw some struggling teams find some form to get wins. Firstly the Sharks beat the Panthers, and then the Cowboys showed a dominant display against the Eels. And lastly the Bulldogs produced yet another win against the Knights. Sunday saw some dominant displays in both games with Manly running riot over the Raiders and then the Titans stamped their mark with a good win over the Tigers. Looking into the Representative Round, look to see some players reap the rewards of great form throughout the first seven rounds of the competition. The first representative match is the Australia Kangaroos verse New Zealand Kiwis test on Friday night. The Kangaroos haven’t made any significant changes to their previous squads although injury has ruled out a few players leading into the match. The Kiwi’s on the other hand have quite a fresh faced team with quite a few players given the chance to represent their country given their great form in the early rounds. On Saturday we will see two great representative matches, firstly will be the Holden U20’s State of Origin Match. This will be a good match to watch, given these stars are the future of the NRL. Then the Pacific Test between Fiji Bati and Toa Samoa which always proves to be very entertaining as these countries always play with their hearts on their sleeve. On Sunday we will see the New South Wales City verse Country match. This again will be an evenly matched game with both sides given the chance to represent their respected areas considering their shining form. Keep in the back of your mind that if NSW Blues regulars are unavailable, players from this match will be given consideration to represent their state in the upcoming Origin campaign. Karl’s Tips: Australia, Queensland, Fiji and Country. Yours in Footy, Karl

BE CROC WISE!
with Terri
How to be Crocodile Wise • Be aware of crocodiles – keep your eyes open, you might not be able to see them, but they are there. • Do not feed or otherwise interfere with crocodiles, small or large. • Avoid areas where large crocodiles or their nests have been seen • Camp at least 50 metres from the waters edge • Stand at least a few metres back from the waters edge when fishing and don’t stand on logs overhanging deep pools. • Do not clean fish, prepare food or engage in other activities on the waters edge and adjacent banks. • Dispose of food scraps (including fish) away from areas where people gather. • Keep arms and legs inside boat hulls.
Send your fishing photos to: terri@tackleworld.com.au
Plenty of Barra about boat gets an old popper, with no hooks, and starts flogging the surface close to the snags and banks to create some action, doesn’t always work but well worth a try. Throw in some cat food or Tuna oil now and then just to get them excited. Put it this way, anything is worth a try to get them on the bite, and it works with most pelagic species. With the good weather in the next couple of months it’s about time you check out your safety gear to see if it is all in good nick and in date. Not only can you get fined, but the safety of your family or friends who may be in the boat, and our responsibility, is the most important aspect we should look at. Until next week, safe boating and enjoy your fishing.

I HOPE all had a great ANZAC Day and the start to the annual Mackeral season (or that’s what it was called when I lived on the East coast and I think it means the same here). Nigel Stacey spent a few days up at Cullen Point and had some of the best fishing he has seen for a long time.
He went around to Janie Creek first, which was a bit of a let down, so he went back to Cullen flicking large poppers off the Point. Nigel had Spanish Mackeral taking Poppers at his feet! He couldn’t believe how shallow they were swimming in to take his lures. He also hooked up on the largest Giant Trevally he has ever seen. A couple of years ago he got onto a 50kg monster at the mouth of Penne, but he reckons the one he
hooked at Cullen Point must have been his grandfather, as it busted him off over the drop-off taking his brand new River to Sea Popper and half his line. Scott and Andrew had a great time down the coast catching some quality Mangrove Jacks off the shoals, mixed with thumping Fingermark and the odd head banging Cobia. Fresh Gulf Squid proved the best bait but without local contacts most had to settle for the Californian variety. continued page 19
