THE Nanum Wungthim Rangers from Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council organised a community Clean Up Australia Day event at Pennefather Beach last Saturday. The reduction in marine debris will, in a small way help in reducing the endless amount of rubbish that floats in and around the Gulf currents and litters the coastline. Matt Gillis, Nanum Wungthim Ranger Coordinator and Environmental Scientist said a total of 520kg of waste was picked up on a 500 metre stretch of beach in four hours by up to 10 people. “In contrast this 520kg equates to 100kg of waste per 100 metres. Pennefather beach is up to 60 kilometres long, and therefore there is an estimate of 60,000 kilograms of plastic containers, and ghost nets that amplify this figure by a larger proportion, “ Mr Gillis said. “This would take at least 3000 people four hours to clean up.” With each visit to Pennefather a new beachscape reveals differing tidal waste. The ebb and flow of recent storms either buries the last lot under sand or it travels back out into the Gulf in the next big tides. A large percentage of Saturday’s collection included small items: squid jigs and fish hooks used for trawling, light globes, fluorescent tubes and glass liquor bottles were some of the dangerous items to take care collecting.  continued page 2

With the Dry season here, the turtle nesting starts in the next weeks - a lot of flotsam and jetsam to get through to dig the holes on the dunes for their eggs. Mr Gillis said plastic water bottles made up the majority of the waste. “They’re more than likely from fishing boats plying the waters off northern Australia’s maritime boundaries, and some maybe from Australian fishing boats close by.” The labels show their Asian origins including Indonesia and Thailand. “The plastics and nets can end up in a turtle’s stomach reducing its ability to dive, this is known as floating syndrome. “Sea birds are also vulnerable to ingestion of marine debris and can end up dying as a result,” he said. Cleaning up the environment is all in a ranger’s day’s work. Ranger and Cultural Advisor Teddy Barkley is a Yunpunghti Traditional Owner of the region from Pennefather to Flinders camp. “Including the Con River (Pennefather)– the proper name, and from way up the Fish Creek,” Mr Barkley said. His family have lived here for thousands of years. Mr Barkley met volunteers at the entrance to the beach supplying disposal bags, while he picked up discarded beer cans and plastic bottles lying about in the Melaluca swamp behind the dunes. After the clean up the rangers cooked up a delicious barbecue lunch for the volunteers at the ranger station. Much of the discussion was on the coconut tree planted in the 1970’s that had been recently chopped down. The few local volunteers on the day, camp here most

weekends also share a special connection; some would say a sacred connection to this place. Weipa residents, campers and John and Cathy Clark have family buried at Pennefather. John works with the Port Authority and Cathy works as a cleaner and ‘cleaning up the beach is what you do’. They like to help nature along, and like the washing up, someone has to do it. “Everywhere I go I take my rake with me,” Mrs Clark said. Mrs Clarke brought school groups to do clean ups when she was a teacher with the Western

Mr Gillis said: “Reefs are subject to being shrouded with ghost nets and that results in the increase of algae growing on the ghost nets and in turn smothering the reef, restricting sunlight from penetrating to the invertebrates living on the reef. “The consequence of marine debris is endless and forms a chain of events that inﬂuences many life forms within the seas of Australia.”

WEIPA RESIDENTS REMINDED:

Weipa police are out and about in the community encouraging residents to lock up their homes, vehicles and vessels. Local Police had 11 reports of thefts from vehicles this year with a further four boats targeted. Of those thefts, eight vehicles had fuel syphoned from tanks, two had property stolen such as an mp3 player and other personal items which were left in the unlocked vehicle, and one car was damaged and entered but no property stolen. The vessels had equipment stolen which included EPIRBs. “We are actively out and about letting locals know to lock up their homes, vehicles and vessels,” Senior Constable Joe Moran said. “At present we’re seeing vehicles targeted and fuel stolen. By simply locking fuel caps this will go a long way to preventing many of these thefts.” Local Police are reminding all of Weipa to be vigilant when it comes to home and vehicle security. Police are looking into areas such as the residential area and shops around the McNamara Shopping Centre and the industrial area at Evans Landing. “We want people to lock up homes, vehicles and vessels and ensure they take all precautions to avoid being targeted by opportunistic thieves,” Senior Constable Moran said. “Those opportunistic thieves are often just walking about the community and looking at what they can see in your vehicle or boat.

“Even if you know there is nothing valuable in the car or boat, remove it or lock it up out of sight in an effort to avoid being targeted.” Police resources continue to be tied up investigating these thefts and whilst Police are prosecuting offenders, members of our community need to take responsibility and play their part in crime prevention. Lock and secure your vehicles and vessels and remove valuables from sight and make it harder for the criminals. The following tips will help reduce the risk of vehicle and property theft from your vehicle: • If you have off street parking, use it. If possible, park behind locked gates or in a locked garage. Parking on the street greatly increases the risk of theft. • Remove temptation – always lock doors and close windows

when your vehicle is unattended; • Remove keys from the ignition if your vehicle is parked or unattended – even if only for a minute; • Don’t hide spare car keys in or on the vehicle as theives know where to look; • If you must leave valuables in your motor vehicle keep them out of sight; • Take your vehicle keys with you if you are going out, even if you are leaving your vehicle at home; • Keys should not be marked with personal or vehicle details – use your personal property identification code; • Don’t leave vehicle keys lying around on tables, benches, beside tables or key hooks at home – keep them out of sight; • When parking in a garage, ensure both the garage and the vehicle are locked and the garage door remotes are secured;

• Use lockable devices such as lockable fuel caps, wheel nuts, spare tyre covers, roof racks, tool boxes and items such as spot lights; • Secure your vehicle registration plates with one way screws; • Consider using the following to help protect your vehicle – car alarm, ignition shield, steering wheel lock, window etching, microdots, GPS tracker or immobiliser; and • For older vehicles install an engine immobiliser that meets Australian Standard 4601:1999. This provides the most effective deterrent to opportunistic vehicle theft, however, it offers no protection if a thief has easy access to your car keys. Funding shines spotlight on domestic violence prevention Weipa Community Care association (WCCa) is set to host awareness-raising activities during Domestic and Family Violence prevention Month in May, thanks to funding from the Queensland Government. David Kempton, Member for Cook said the WCCA would receive $3000 to run the String Women’s Circle project “The Government is partnering with organisations such as WCCA to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and to help people take action before it’s too late,” Mr Kempton said. He said the funding would go a long way towards domestic and family violence prevention in the area. “WCCA will team up with Western Cape College

news Excitement builds as wheelbarrow race approaches ThiNgs are getting very real now! The great wheelbarrow Race is almost upon us and there are more than a few nerves and some excitement building within the team. This week we have to acknowledge and thank Ashlee May and the Student Representative Council at Western Cape College for organising a Free Dress Day for all students from Prep to Year 7. This event was very well supported by the students, parents and teachers of WCC and raised an amazing $750 to add to the growing total. Saturday morning saw the WAGS venture out on their last run in Weipa before the big event. Thanks to those who gave us money and encouraged us on our way. Thanks also to Glenn for choosing to drive the bus even though the weather was perfect for boating, and also to Brooke and Bart for again letting us use the bus. This week, we will be finalising our Family Fun Day which is being held at the cricket oval on Saturday,

LAST Tuesday, April 29, the Alngith Corporation and its members marked the breaking of ground for their ﬁrst building development. The Corporation also welcomed Shane Marshall Building to Weipa, who will be assisting them to accomplish this. While the project has taken some time coming, members are happy that the momentum has finally begun to develop their vacant blocks and ensure future sustainability for the clan. The Alngith members celebrated with a turning of the soil ceremony to mark the signiﬁcant day. The establishment of the Alngith Corporation Ltd came about through the Weipa Township Agreement between the Weipa

Township Traditional Owners Group and Comalco (now Rio Tinto Alcan). The focus for the future is to build a solid economic base for the membership to sustain them into the future, thereby becoming stronger contributors to society, and eventually offer employment, education and greater opportunities for self determination. “We would like to acknowledge our staff who have worked hard to help us realise our vision, and to pause and remember our elders who have passed on, who have also contributed to this day,” Alngith Corporation’s Sandra Kemp said. “We hope that there will be many more to come.”

Cape York health worker to address meeting APUNIPIMA Cape York Health Council Maternal and Child Health Worker Johanna Hunt has won a scholarship to present at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) third Indigenous Women’s Health Meeting in Adelaide which will take place this month. The event brings together health professionals from Australia, New Zealand and the Paciﬁc Islands who share the common desire to see greater improvements in the health outcomes of Indigenous women. Johanna Hunt and Maternal and Child Health Team Leader Johanna Neville will present on Apunipima’s Baby Basket project which has been running since 2009. “Three Baby Baskets (which contain a range of products for babies and new mums) are provided to Cape York mums as part of the project. “The ﬁrst basket is given at the initial antenatal visit, the second when mum comes to Cairns to give birth and the

third when the baby is around six months old,” Ms Hunt explained. “We value the opportunity to present on the Baby Basket project. A recent evaluation found that the baskets increase Cape York women’s engagement with antenatal and post-natal health services, provide important assets to families and most importantly, create a sense of belonging for the women. Their experience is that they are part of a health service which cares.” Ms Hunt said she is honoured to have won the scholarship. “I feel privileged to be able to attend this event. I’m looking forward to sharing our stories, meeting health workers from other countries, learning from their experiences and ﬁnding out how

they manage local health challenges.” Johanna Hunt holds a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and has a Diploma of Community Services. Prior to starting with Apunipima in 2013, Johanna lived and worked in Aurukun for five years. Her roles included working with young first time mums and child development. Johanna is currently the Maternal and Child Health Worker for Aurukun and will start her postgraduate nursing studies in July this year. A number of other Apunipima staff will also be presenting at the event including Community Nutritionist Kirby Murtha and Advanced Nutrition Promotion Health Worker Derlene Gray, who will discuss maternal and child health nutrition in Cape York, and present the outcomes of the Fred Hollows Early Childhood Anaemia Prevention Project, which included one pilot community in Cape York and Senior Medical Officer, Dr Jacki Mein who will discuss the Baby Basket evaluation process.

Police station identification: a sign of the times THIS cast iron Queensland Police Station Badge was used as a station identifier between 1911 and 1958. During the 19th century, police stations were not identified in any way, so if you wanted to find one you needed some luck or local knowledge. In 1907, Police Commissioner William Cahill and the Deputy Queensland Government Architect, designed the Queensland Police Station Badge based on the police cap badge of the time. In 1911, 300 cast iron badges, each weighing 17 pounds (7kgs) and costing 4

shillings and 10 pence, were manufactured for the Police Department by Harvey & Son, Globe Iron Works, Brisbane and distributed as identiﬁcation badges to every Police Station in the State. On November 11, 1958 because of complaints that police stations were not readily identifiable, the Department of Works was asked to supply conspicuous illuminated signs showing POLICE in black letters on a white background. On May 5, 1959, a sample illuminated sign was erected

at Holland Park Police Station and with that success, an order was placed with Albert Smith and Son to manufacture these signs. Over the next decade the illuminated signs were progressively installed at stations and the old style cast iron badges were returned to the Police Depot. Sometime in the late 1960s the illuminated word POLICE, was produced in white letters on a black background, and in the mid 1980s a blue light was added to the top for more effect.

Ludwig Leichhardt explores Cape York THE European exploration of the Cape York land area commenced with the journey of the well-known historical figure, Ludwig Leichhardt, a Prussian naturalist and explorer, in the 1840s. Having already developed a wide range of experience through his exploratory and scientific work, Leichhardt began his journey to Cape York Peninsula on October 1, 1844, with his starting point being the Darling Downs. Leichhardt reached the Burdekin Valley in May 1845, located the Lynd River and followed it through to the larger Mitchell River. He then followed the Mitchell for some way through good quality pastoral country, eventually reaching the river plain which fringes the Gulf of Carpentaria. This river plain was formed by the confluence of a series of rivers with this proving to be an obstacle, slowing the party down considerably. Leichhardt also realised he was too far north, which compromised his plan to locate a simple, river based route westward to Port Essington. Faced with this situation, Leichhardt then made his way further to the south, with his aim to round the Gulf of Carpentaria. During this on-going journey to the west, Leichhardt undertook further exploratory and scientific work, documenting a number of watercourses including Dunbar Creek, mistakenly concluding that this waterway was one of the

heads of the Nassau River. During this part of the journey, Leichhardt and his companions clashed with the local Aborigines, with injuries suffered on both sides. At least one Aboriginal was killed, with others no doubt wounded and Leichhardt’s natural history collector, Gilbert, was killed within one of these skirmishes. Following this period of confusion and difﬁculty, as well as surviving at least one major clash with the local Indigenous people, Leichhardt resumed the journey on July 1, 1845. He came across a large river, naming it the Gilbert in honour of his recently lost naturalist and continued round the south end of the Gulf. Along the way he continued to identify good quality pastoral land. Leichhardt eventually reached Port Essington on December 18, 1845. THE Jewish Supreme Court, the Sanhedrin, ordered the disciples Peter and John not to preach and teach again in the name of Jesus, but they refused to listen saying that they would rather obey God than man. (Acts 4: 18-21). The disciples took this ﬁrm stand because they were fully convinced that it was the gospel of Jesus Christ that was the only way that peoples of the world could be put in a right standing with God. The gospel they preached invited people to accept Jesus by faith and continue to put all their trust in him, in the

saving act of his death on the Cross and then resurrection, which will ensure their salvation. The two disciples then made strong claims about the exclusivity of Jesus (Jesus only) being the only way to God, and of course they were not making up these claims. They were just saying what God and the Lord Jesus himself said. When Jesus was transﬁgured on a high mountain in front of Peter, James, and John, God the Father said about Jesus, “This is my own dear Son-listen to him!” (Mark 9:7). Acts 4: 12; “Salvation is to be found through him alone;

in all the world there is no one else whom God has given who can save us.” Jesus said to his disciple Thomas in John14: 6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.” They hammered home the truth of the name of Jesus having real power to strengthen and heal, and that the members of the Court should have remembered this as Jesus himself carried out a lot of miracles right in front of them all. news Financial support to encourage young artists Dr Thancoupie Gloria Fletcher AO, whose artistic name was Thanakupi, was a highly respected Thaynakwith Elder from the Weipa region of Far North Queensland, and the last fluent speaker of her language, Thaynakwith. She came to international fame as a potter in the 1970s and remained the foremost Australian Indigenous ceramic artist all her life. A pioneer in the arts, she inspired many people who came into contact with her, not only through her magnificent ceramics and sculpture, but also as a teacher, story teller, writer and recorder of language. She worked unceasingly to create a pathway for the youth of her community and region so they could follow her lead and learn new skills in the wider world whilst learning their cultures and languages, their dances and songs, and thus being proud to face any future their families might encounter. REPRESENTATIVES of the Thancoupie Bursary were in western Cape York last week to provide information to aspiring young Indigenous artists about the unique scholarship. Thancoupie’s Tribal Daughter and bursary chair, Jeanie Little, former mentor Jennifer Isaacs and bursary deputy chair Bob Simpkin toured several communities and schools in the region, hoping to encourage young people to apply for the financial aid to artists. The bursary was Thancoupie’s wish and this project has been set up to support young Indigenous artists and aspiring arts-workers from the Western Cape. Through financial support, bursary recipients are given encouragement to study and succeed outside their own community. “This is a one-off, annual

scholarship,” Jeanie said. “We want ordinary young people to have a chance to get a leg-up... move to a city and see a new world with new eyes.” The Thancoupie Bursary is offered to people who have an interest in any arts-related activities, Jennifer explained. “The funding is for all practical art forms, or craft or technical skills related to creative work,” she said. “Thancoupie just wanted to create a pathway for the youth of her community and region to follow her lead and learn new skills in the wider world.” Beginning with a modest sum left in Thancoupie’s will, the board of directors have worked to raise further monies, establishing a Bursary that is hoped will be perpetual. While in Weipa the bursary representatives held discussions with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and

Crushing victories Gees there were some shellacking’s handed out on the weekend (so my human Dad called them but the way I saw it was that some of the teams just didn’t turn up to play once again). The skivvy wearer just can’t get his Blues to fire at all with kicking only two goals in the first three terms and then they rallied and kicked eight of the last 12 goals. All too little to late I say. The Pies are now in the top four and look like they deserve to be there. What do you say St Nick and his merry men got a real lesson in footy from the Hawks at a rain soaked MCG. The Hawks 145 point win did come at a cost with stars Sam Mitchell and big Brian Lake both being injured. At a bitterly cold and wet day in Canberra the boys from Western Sydney competed well against a Port outfit that is on fire this year. The score4line kept looking at being a blowout but the kids from there west kept fighting back and held the scoreboard to a respectable margin. GWS could just peg another win when they take on the Eagles over in the west. Roosy has got the Demons off their back and they put in admirable performance to knock over the Crows by three points in their first win in Adelaide in 12 years. Everyone did their bit to contribute. As I have always said there is no ‘I’ in TEAM. Hope they don’t knock my Doggies off this week. Dads Lions were never in the hunt after the first quarter with the Swans midfield running riot and thoroughly outplaying the Lions. How good was Goodes now back for his first full game this season. Young Tom Rockliff played his heart out for the Lions without much support. The 13 goal win was just what the Swans needed to move into the top eight for the first time this season. With Tippet back this week it should be a cracker of a game against the all-conquering Hawks on Saturday. The Bombers did it the hard way to grind out an eight point win over my Doggies. The oldest man in the AFL Dustin Fletcher was the best on ground by a country mile. Will the old fellow play on next year as he turns 39 today and needs 16 more games to make it to 400. If he goes around again in 2015 and remains injury free he could probably knock off the all-time game holder Michael Tuck who played 426 games for the Hawks. Gazza just keeps doing amazing things and this week was no different as he steered the Suns to a convincing victory over the Roos and put them as equal fourth on the ladder. North Melbourne succumbed to the Nullarbor Curse. This year only the Suns and Power have won the week after their trip over to the west. At least no one has an excuse this week as they had their local derby in the west. The Dockers fought hard for their 19 point win. The Eagles inaccuracy in front of the big sticks has cost them dearly kicking a combined 30.51 in their last four outings. Freo will see if they really have it when they travel to Adelaide this week to take on Port Adelaide at their fortress. On a wet cold afternoon the Cats were given a real scare by Richmond who didn’t kick their first goal until the 22nd minute of the second term and then rediscovered their play-on footy style from last year, but the Cats held on for a five point win. Don’t forget we have Monday night footy this week with Saints against Carlton and I am sure both teams will be out to show that they want to be a part of the competition. Emotion and passion THERE was a lot of emotion and passion displayed over the weekend with many players representing their countries in the representative round. The round kicked off on Friday with the Australia and New Zealand Test. The Kangaroos were early favourites, but the Kiwis didn’t disappoint with a hard fought game, The Kangaroo’s winning 30-18 over the Kiwis. On Saturday the Holden U20’s State of Origin match was played with NSW upsetting the Queenslanders with a strong win. Then the Pacific Test was played between Fiji Bati and Toa Samoa. There was a lot to play for with the winners getting a place in the four nation’s tournament at the end of the year. Samoa came shooting out of the blocks and despite a fight back from Fiji, Samoa held them out to get the win. On Sunday the NSW City verse Country match was played, City were early favourites leading into the match despite Country being winners last year. The game ended in a draw and Country was crowned winners. Looking into Round 9, we are back to our regular fixtures with a full weekend of rugby league. Friday will see two matches, firstly the Roosters will take on the West Tigers and then the Cowboys will go head to head with Queensland counterparts the Broncos. On Super Saturday the Warriors verse the Raiders, the Titans play the Rabbitohs and the Storm look for a win over the Sea Eagles. On Sunday afternoon we will have the Knights and the Panthers game, followed by the Dragons and Bulldogs battle. Monday night’s game will bring the round to a close, with the slippery Eels taking on the struggling Sharks. Grainger takes Goodline Weipa Open title LAST weekend was the Goodline Weipa Open and 65 golfers took to the course for the 36-hole competition in Mens A, B, C, D grades, and Ladies Division 1 and 2. It was great to see the number of players from visiting clubs travel the distance to Weipa, all with the promise of returning in 2015. This was the sixth year of the Goodline Weipa Open, and hopefully it won’t be the last. The support and sponsorship John and Catherine, and Goodline provide not just to the Carpentaria Golf Club, but to a lot of events in Weipa, is exceptional, and greatly appreciated by all. Thank you to Tony White for representing Goodline over the weekend and presenting the prizes to our daily and overall winners. Congratulations to Lee Grainger for taking home the 2014 Goodline Weipa Open Champion trophy. There was only one point difference between Lee and former local junior Ryan Aspinall.

The results for D Grade Men could not be presented on Sunday night due to a play off between Roy Burley and Matt “Pumba” Wheeler. One hole was played on Sunday before light faded, and it was continued on Monday. The four regulated play off-holes resulted in all square, so then it was sudden death. The way the play off was going, light might have been the winner again, and a Tuesday continuation was looking likely. After three sudden death holes, Roy Burley claimed the honours. Cape York to ﬁeld team at Zenadth Kes Allblack carnival

SENIOR Cape York rugby league players look set to form a side to compete at the Zenadth Kes (former Torres Cup) Allblacks carnival on Thursday Island and any prize money it wins will be donated to the local junior competition. To be held at TI’s Ken Brown Memorial Oval the Zenadth Kes Cup is set for October 17 to 19. Players who want to be part of the side are Brendan Ramsamy, Col Doulton, Justin Barba, Chastyn Bowen, Tim Oberleuter, Sereli Volavola, Garreth Smith, Seamus Gay, Luke Murray, Jack Sagigi, Karl Adams, Reece McLaughlin, Pana Canaweka, Albert Bond and Rod Wawrzyniak. One possible name for the team would be the Cape York Old Boys. Some of the above have sons who are junior footballers. Spokesman Garreth Smith reffered to the suggestion to form a side was after consultation with a number of senior players from the Weipa Region. “It is to put a side together to compete in the 2014 Torres

This side would donate any winnings from the carnival to the Central Cape Suns Junior Rugby League,” Mr Smith said. “It has also been considered that this team become mentors for the junior players and that they engage with training, game days and fund raising events during the year where at all possible. The aim is to give the CCSJRL an engagement of senior members to assist when required. Mr Smith pointed out it would not be a regional representative side, but more a part of a mentoring and fundraising initiative.

“It is with this in mind that this is proposed, to give the CCSJRL a potentially significant financial boost and an association with some senior members of the region’s rugby league players,” Mr Smith said. A proposal was put to the Junior Club a couple of weeks ago, Mr Smith said. “This has since been passed by the committee and we are all go. “There are still a number of possible inclusions that I won’t mention as they have not yet been confirmed, but some of these names will be familiar,” Mr Smith said. Mr Smith has been one of the region’s, and indeed North Queensland’s, better forwards who has shone at Allblacks carnival for years. He also represented Cape/ Torres in the Foley Shield competition. “This is my last year involved in junior rugby league as my youngest son is going to boarding school next year and I wanted to do something in my last year for the club to give it a boost and I was keen to have another run with a few of my old mates,” he said.

dumped them. The guys were kicking themselves went I told them it is normal in Threadies - it’s caused from the way they swim. They got really upset when I told them how good they taste! A few Threadies are hanging around Big Bridge in the early hours of the morning, from around 4am onwards, but as the sun rises they start to go off the bite. There are plenty of Mackerel hanging around the shipping channel. You could probably troll some Halco 190 Laser Pro along the drop-off, and you would do alright, but for some great fun I would be using surface lures in close to the markers/leads. Mackerel will chase a Popper and so will most other Species, so you will never know what you will catch. There are some really big GTs hanging around the channel and Tuna also will smack surface lures. Fingermark are being caught out past Duyfken, down Westminster and Pera way, and don’t discount the creeks - some of those rock bars up the Embley hold some very big fish. Jacks are about in good numbers and they can’t resist a juicy bit of fresh Mullet. Maybe they are trying to fatten up to get them through the winter (ha ha). IndIgenous students from AFL Cape York House are taking on-the-job learning to a new level, helping to construct a new classroom as part of a schoolbased work experience program. Housing and Public Works Minister Tim Mander said the project could be the first step on the road to an apprenticeship or construction traineeship. “The opportunity to get involved in a project like this provides a great introduction to a career in the construction industry, allowing students to round out their studies with practical skills and on-the-job learning,” Mr Mander said. AFL Cape York House supports 38 male students aged between 13 and 18 years from remote Indigenous communities across Queensland to live and study in Cairns. Member for Cairns Gavin King said that since opening its doors, the facility had achieved impressive attendance rates, as well as exceptional uptake of additional studies and specialist tutoring in fields like engineering. “The first graduating class achieved some great results with one student receiving an Ian Potter

I wIll be fishing the Skardon River when this newspaper is delivered. I’m not bragging, I just thought you would all like to know where I am – consider this as my trip sheet if you like. There are four boats and four crew going so it should be very interesting – hopefully I will get some good pics to share with you all next week. There are a couple of chefs among the crew so we won’t starve, and naturally there is plenty of beverage to keep us hydrated – now I am bragging! If all the stories I’ve been hearing are right the rivers and creeks are overloaded with Barra and Salmon. Doesn’t matter which river, the Wenlock, Pine, Mission or the Hey – you can’t miss. One lot of anglers were saying they pulled up at a likely-looking gutter, just as the tide started pushing in, and stayed there for two hours landing Barra after Barra. They weren’t big, two legal, but everyone had a ball. Live Herring were the go, until they all carked it, (they forgot to freshen up the water), but slabs of fresh Mullet strips worked nearly as well. A group of visitors had the time of their life flicking B52s and BW16a Gold Bombers to land three Barra over 75cm and two Threadies around 90cm. There is a funny story there also... they thought the fish were diseased because they had large knobs on their back bones so they

AFTER a four-week break it was an action-packed return to our soccer competition. It was great to see all our players and supporters ready and raring to go! Game of the week: Squirts – White Blue vs White Black Fun was all over the faces of our Squirts in their awesome game. Amelia had amazing speed, Matthias was a striking sensation, and Ashlen’s defence was dynamic. Charlie showed some fancy footwork and Jimmy James was all over the ﬁeld showing great skill. Rhys watched on in support
